You teach the sports and get graded on how well you discipline your peers. Some students have never played the sports they are teaching. Her attendance policy is outrageous...5% off your grade with every class you miss.
Dr.Powers was one of my favorite teachers this semester! She was very nice and fun to talk to! It was the walking lab, so it was an easy class. She always made sure we were done on time, which was nice!
EASY!
In her physical conditioning class, she will get you into shape. Running long distance or sprints is an everyday thing in that class. Her biggest pet peeve is attendance, so DO NOT miss more than her allowed absences.
She rocked my world. I learned a lot about my fitness abilities. She got me feeling good about myself as I am. I never ran before her class. I hated PE. She taught me how to eat well, keep a journal, stand up for myself, and I now workout 3 days a week. she seems to care about students more than most professors at BSU.
I learned so much this semester and I got into much better shape. I loved this class and I'm going to continue my fitness into the future because of everything I've learned. I would recommend that everyone take a class with Powers.
She is an excellent professor. Her goal is to get you in shape and she does just that. She has is a kind and caring women. I loved her class.
GREAT prof. Would recommend her to anyone taking the class. Makes it fun and has a good time. She pushes you to get a workout in but makes it enjoyable. Take her!
Not a very organized teacher. She tries to remember your name, but will constantly call you the wrong name. Not a very good teacher.
Very energetic teacher. Class will definately wake you up at 8:00 am.
PFW103 (Walking) is general considered a joke at Ball State. Before I enrolled in the class I was pissed off that I was going to pay the school to have someone walk me around campus. But Shannon is a good professor. She's an advocate for health and she cares about her students. You won't just walk, you'll partake in anything from yoga to nap-time.
She is very enthusiastic about this course and helps try to change students lifestyles for the better.
She is very entertaining
Very energetic! She tries to get her students to learn various types of aerobic exercises which is fun because no class was exactly the same thing. She loves her job. Great class!
Shannon Powers is amazing! Super sweet, engergetic, and fun. The class is challenging, and WILL get you sweaty. She makes working out extremely exciting and makes you feel like a kid again. We played tag, took naps, yoga, dance offs, meditated, electric slided, walked outside, scavenger hunts, jump roped, and danced. TAKE HER! Aerobics
She genuinely cares about what she does and about helping her students improve their health. Easy to talk to and never makes class boring. It is not just walking, there are days where you will play tag, do yoga, just relax, or do circuits.
If you just want to walk and be lazy don't take her. She takes her job serious and it is a workout! Some days you'll love her and some days she'll really piss you off. She's energetic and tries to make it fun. And trust me, you will embarrassed walking in front of other classes more than once, but she's a good instructor.
She's very energetic and makes the class really fun! She definitely makes you work hard but it's worth it in the end!
Takes this class way too seriously. And you do way more than walking.
Instructor is highly motivated and dedicated. Cheerful disposition, professional attitude, and easy to work with. In a word, outstanding.
Great professor! She really knows what she's doing and loves what she does! She wants you to learn and do the best that you can. I actually broke a sweat which made me happy in the end. She's also funny and entertaining. You can miss 3 classes without it hurting your grade.
This teacher was very rude to me. She is very unorganized and she is not helpful at all. She constantly picked on me whenever I asked a question and made me feel stupid by embarrassing me in front of the class. Worse physical education teacher ever!
Powers knows her stuff. I wish I could take her class all 4 yrs
Are you ready to work out harder than ever before? If you're ready for intense workout sessions, then you'll like her just fine. If you're more of a "Netflix is a sport" kind of person, I'd find an easier professor...
I loved Dr. Powers. She is very easy going and relaxed but makes you get down to business. We all respect her because she understands us. She makes you work and makes you feel good about yourself. No matter if you are athletic or not at the end of her class you will feel like you accomplished something. Had her for walking and we did more than wa
Shannon Powers is one of the best professors I've had at Ball State! She was so encouraging and she made working out fun and not a chore. I have learned a lot from her class and she has even offered to help me in the future during any workouts I may need help with. She is certainly a go-getter, and really cares about her students!
Amazing person.
She's very energetic and enthusiastic about the class, but if you just want to take a chill class and do nothing but walk, then she's not the one for you. You will do a lot more working out than you expect. (But still fun)
The attendance policy is horrible, expect to do more than just walk in her class
She is a little crazy, but fun! She will really help you through it if you act like you care about the class. Really cares about your health and well being.
i have her for Aerobics and I loved it. she makes you work for it, but her class is really enjoyable.
If you want a high intensity exercise course shes your prof. Otherwise she will deviate from the course outline because she "got bored"
Dr. Powers is enthusiastic about health and cares about the health of her students. I personally find her inspiring. Her workout classes are more intense than most Walking courses, though.
After some unforeseen health issues limited my participation in the course, she could've very well told me to drop the class or docked my grade, instead she worked with me and let me continue in the class with an adapted routine. VERY caring about her students, just talk to her. The course is not just walking, but it is made to be fun.
Powers is a great person, and really funny. But if you're expecting a "walking" course when you sign up for walking, get ready to work. She will push you to your limits physically and goes pretty hardcore for a walking instructor. Get ready to sweat. A lot.
She makes the class more fun than just walking. She really cares about your health as well. She's also funny! Don't be afraid to take her class just because you do more than walk! Just walking every class really would get boring, thankfully she makes it more interesting!
She definitely loves her job and you will find that out on day 1. She's funny and cares about you, but you MUST come to class or you will absolutely fail. You need to participate. You do more cardio than walk but she knows what she's talking about. You prob will sweat. Make sure you have a friend in the class or else it will be boring!
She's great at getting you motivated for the day. Respects her students and any disabilities they may have.
Use her title when you address her. Dr. Powers is not casual. Also, don't submit anything late. Stay on top of your work and read the material and you'll do just fine. I took the online class. I am very athletic and Dr Powers kept pushing me for more steps! I really benefited from the class and enjoyed the textbook reading, too.
This was not your average Walking class, professor Powers genuinely cares about your overall health and fitness. She inspired me to get back into the swing of working out which I haven't done consistently years and the results were great. You will do many fun exercises and activity, so don't think you'll spend the semester only walking.
If you are taking a walking class to purely walk at your leisure, this isn't the class for you. Powers is unlike any other walking professor. She is very nice and cares about your health, but she definitely makes you work. If you don't break a sweat, you're doing something wrong. You get three absences, so show up and it's an easy pass.
Dr Powers is a super intense Prof. I walking thinking it would be chill and easy but it was the complete opposite. The class was never boring which was good and she gives you a lot of good workout methods. I will say watching her fast walk toward you is one of the most terrifying things I have ever seen
Its not bad, it just really all depends if youre a workout type of person (lol not me!). She sometimes walks w/ the class (very fast). Theres only just a lot of warm-ups, to me.
Dr. Powers will make you work for that participation, but you will see results. Personally, I lost 10 pounds in that class over the 50 miles we walked. The class is designed to have a partner or groups so it's easy to make friends if that's what you're looking for. Power walking is great with Dr. Powers!
Power's was one of the best professors I've had. She is absolutely hilarious and tries her best to make the class fun. Yes, you will have to show up, do the exercises and walk but it is not that hard at all. She is definitely one of a kind and you will not regret choosing her as your prof.
I had Powers for walking. She is an oddball. Doesn't allow headphones. Pushes you hard and expects you to speed walk (practically running). We did weird stretches & hard warmups- think planks and running up and down stairs. Hard to keep up when walking outside & she left the slowest kid behind. Way more physical activity than expected!!
Dr. Powers was very helpful to me. I had major surgery about two weeks before the class started and she helped me find alternate activities to complete the weekly exercise log until my doctor cleared me. Her book was very informative and I learned a lot out of this course. Definitely would take a class with her again!
Professor Powers as a person is great. However, I wouldn't take her again. She is super strict about the PFW Logs- one little mistake causes you to get docked. She did let you remake them about halfway through if you went to a tutorial, but still. Super tough grader. Workload wasn't bad though.
DO NOT TAKE -- if you can take any other professor for your PFW course, take someone else!!!!! Dr. Powers has been inconsistent in her grading and communication throughout the semester. Her expectations for you as a student are sky-rocketing high for this being a required 100 level course and she is not willing to work with you as a student.
INCREDIBLY INCONSISTENT GRADER. She will dock you for completely random things on the exercise logsthings that aren't on the assignment descriptionand will not work with you to fix them. She is the most fickle professor I have ever had. For a tier one level-100 course, it's ridiculous the amount of homework she assigns per week.
Genuinely helped me be healthier and more active. Very supportive and a good person. When it comes to the assignments, they are easy but often boring.
Very inconsistent grader. She pushes the students hard but makes no exception for students who arent able to do the exercises she requires. Often singles people out and makes them feel embarrassed because they cant do the exercise she is asking for. Also she left a kid behind while we were walking outside, they ended up spraining their ankle....
Dr. Powers is amazing. I took this class as a requirement, but I will be taking more of SPs classes again. She makes class fun and we do more than just walking, such as freeze tag. I enjoyed this class a lot. She gave me the boost I needed to get out of my sedentary lifestyle. I would definitely encourage taking her class.
I am not athletic and was not excited for this class. But, Dr Powers was caring, and as long as you show up you pass.
If youre looking for an easy walking class where you can listen to music and walk at whatever pace you want Powers is not your girl. HOWEVER, super dope person and while I did break a sweat Powers made it a fun class and gave us options of what we wanted to do to make it fun. I would 100% take her class again.
If youre going to take this course, please take it with a different professor. She starts class like 5 minutes before its supposed to start so if you get there on time you're pretty much late. this class is walking class but you do a LOT more than just walking, she also doesnt care about her students at all.
Take ANY other professor. Shannon Powers is rude, derogatory, and overall a terrible instructor. She treats her students poorly and makes exercises up that should not be in a basic walking class. I walked out of that class every day angry or upset by the way she talks to her students.
I love Dr. Powers! If you are looking for a class where all you do is walk circles everyday she is not for you. I would encourage you to challenge yourself however; and she really wants to see you reach goals and cheers you on. I felt respected and I am glad she pushes the class to be a full body wellness course. Not hard if you are open to change.
I didn't think I was going to like PFW, but it is by far my favorite class this semester. She is so funny and encouraging. She can come across sassy or rude, but I don't think she means it that way. I definitely recommend her.
Dr. Powers is a very tough instructor to be teaching a walking class. She makes you do exercises that should not be in a walking class. If you cannot participate in her activities, you are immediately belittled. Ask a question, and you feel stupid. She does not respect her students, period. She will try to talk about students to other students too.
The majority of the grade is participation. She comes across as crude at the beginning of the year, but that changes once you get to know each other. In order to make the class enjoyable you have to be friendly towards others in it. You are going to be expected to do other things besides walking too.
Does not give time to change into required workout clothes. Other classes I've seen that meet the physical course requirement have much more positive and relatable teachers. Is strict on attendance to the point of quote "Even if a family member is hospitalized and you miss a class, it is still an unexcused absence and your grade will reflect that".
Dr. Powers is definitely a character. PFW isn't fun but she's energetic and interesting. You just have to show up and walk a little bit to pass.
PFW103 is a boring class, but required. Powers make it incredibly fun and she is incredibly understanding. If you ask her to do a certain activity, she will do it. All PFW courses are not just walking, but they're easy. You just have to show up.
She is very picky with what you turn in. I would read all the instructions clearly and she would take off points for reasons that weren't in the rubric. Do not recommend her for online.
She clearly has no first-hand experience in physical fitness or is not current with current research on health, physical fitness, etc. Also not very professional, she replied "YAAASSS" in reply to an email chain. As someone who has been training for over a year and works out twice a day, Do better.
she took us around campus and off campus to places like minnetrista, which is interesting and makes the class go faster, but she can be a little disrespectful and come off as rude to students. do not miss more than 3 classes or your grade will go down. no phones. show up and you pass, decent walking class she's just not my favorite personality wise
She is rude, disrespectful to students, and grading is solely based on if she likes you. I would suggest taking this class with another prof 100%. She is a tough grader and changes things that are not on the rubric/syllabus of the class. How is she a physical fitness teacher when she looks like she hasn't lifted a single weight & isnt up to date
the class itself is very easy as long as you show up. Powers has a really weird personality and says some weird things sometimes. phones are strictly forbidden. I forgot to sign the attendance sheet and she said i couldn't make the absence up. Can miss no more then 3 classes or else you can lose up to 60 points.
when it was warm outside she had us in the woods and walking to random far places at 8 in the MORNING. she would leave the people in the back of the group. she took us to places around campus and expected us not to take our phones. she was nice for the last two classes ONLY (and we were doing assessments). if you could get a different professor
You have to come to class or you wont pass at all. If you miss more than 3 days then you will start to lose points in the class. Overall this is a very easy class that is pretty simple.
If you show up, you pass, otherwise you fail. She says some wack things about "your generation" and constantly talks about how much drugs and phones college students are addicted to? Sometimes goes on tangents about her personal life. But is extremely knowledgeable about exercise if you can ignore the weird things she says sometimes.
Run. Titious. Textbook heavy. When I didn't do well on an assignment, took away my grade from an orientation assignment 2 weeks before. Will describe the assignment as simple, then will take off points for things never mentioned would be a problem. (ex: 11/15 on assignment for doing the same workout routine during the week.) Take any other class.
This class is labeled as walking, but she will expect you to sprint-walk everywhere you go. If you don't keep up, she will scold you repeatedly. She emphasizes that if you have anything unexpected come up mid-semester, that still counts towards your allotted absences and you will lose points for going over. Unenjoyable experience.
I was affected by the hurricane (Milton) and lost power for a week. I emailed Dr. Powers on three separate occasions and never received an email back until I emailed the head of the fitness department. The reply seemed very bitter since I went above her because I couldn't get a response back. I suggest going with a different option if you can.
Powers is a good prof. She cares, she's a little funny sometimes, and she has some good opinions and beliefs. Sometimes she has this “high on life” energy and techno music that's a little hard to deal with at 8 AM but other than that she's cool. Beware that walking also involves a lot of yoga and running back and forth across the classroom.
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE! This professor is unprofessional and downright cruel. She has no compassion for personal emergencies(like when my aunt passed away)and ends class early for her convenience. She humiliates students who struggle, especially if you're not already athletic. Also way more then walking,no phones or headphones. Avoid at all costs!
This is a walking class...if you cannot handle Ball State level walking course then maybe you should reevaluate yourself. She communicates well if you let her know info beforehand. It's Ball States attendance policy she follows so idk why anyone complains. Overall, no complaints she states everything clear and is very informative about health.
She loves to ramble about random topics that have nothing to do with the lessons at hand. Have made multiple derogatory statements. This is a walking lecture and it is our first day and we are just speaking about her partying in Korea. Should not be paying this much for a class to be listening to this.
She does not accept any late work even when you have technical issues. She is a harsh grader.
This was a walking class, yet we did not do much walking. The 3 times we walked outside, she made us cross the street while cars were coming, causing the drivers to get mad and honk at us. Also doesn't seem to care about students with physical disabilities, leaving them in the back to fend for themselves.
this was for 119 yoga, she wasn't very kind to a lot of the girls in the class and was weird to the foreign exchange students. A lot of the lessons seemed really haphazardly put together at the beginning of class and she would forget what yoga poses we were supposed to be doing often. BUT, she would ask for consent before correcting our form.
Professor made students walk in the road multiple times with oncoming traffic. Powers should have done more to accommodate students with disabilities and giving them more additional options.
