She is amazing! Very enjoyable and extremely helpful. Exams are not too difficult, but I'd still recommend studying. Other than that really not bad.
Pretty easy class. Sexton is a great professor. Exams are not hard as long as you study!
Soooo nice. Very helpful and good with communication. Pretty easy. five point quizzes a week. exams are straight from study guide. very very friendly. liked her a lot!!
I really recommend her for anyone. It was a wonderful class!
So nice! Shannon is super friendly and willing to help any student. As long as you study for the quizzes and exams you will do fine in her class.
very nice and helpful professor. if you go to class, do the writing assignments (that are super easy) and do the study guides theres no reason you shouldnt get a good grade.
Very helpful teacher, but would recommend asking her questions directly in class. 5 quizzes, but be very prepared for the exams because they are tricky! But other than that if you study hard, and do the papers, you'll be fine. Oh, and I never once opened the text book...don't buy it.
Shannon was my favorite teacher last semester! I really wish I could have her again. She is extremely helpful, very caring, and nice. Her quizzes and exams are pretty easy if you have previous psychology experience. I would definitely recommend her!
Shannon is a sweetheart. She is so nice and very clear with her lessons. She is also very helpful. If you take this class, don't hesitate to ask her for help. Definitely the best class I've had thus far at CMU.
Shannon is an amazing teacher. You can tell she truly cares about her students and children. She is professional however she isn't strict.
Shannon is a wonderful professor. She is very knowledgeable about course material and is super helpful and friendly. I would highly recommend.
Prof. Sexton is AWESOME. Anyone taking HDF 100, being in her class is a MUST! Exams are a little tricky as well as the quizzes if you dont study.
Shannon is the best! she's so down to earth and understanding. the class is interesting and you basically never have homework except for the one and only project that's huge. But that's literally the only assignment in the class and it's not too hard either. Take hdf 317 with Shannon! you will NOT be disappointed!
Shannon is a GREAT instructor. I loved this class only because of her. She made it interesting and was always willing to help and was always super nice. The material is easy if you pay attention and attend her class. I would highly recommend her to anyone!
Shannon is VERY nice, there is no denying that. However, I did not learn anything from this class. This class was SO easy, so if that is what you are looking for...then take it. However, if you actually want to learn something, consider something else.
sexton was an amazing prof. she knows her stuff and is always willing to help. the class is extremely easy and i learned so much. whenever you have trouble or don't understand something she has no problem helping you out. she always leaves comments when grading papers and she grades pretty easy. i would strongly recommend her.
Observation and journal points are really easy, and exams are easy enough if you study the notes. She is a very picky grader when it comes to papers and projects. The final paper, project, and exam make up most of your grade. If you do not ace all of these in the last week of the semester you have no chance at an A.
GREAT professor! Very friendly, very funny, and very personable. She gives specific deadlines and sticks to them very well. Would reccommend her 100%
Shannon is an amazing teacher! She is funny and really engages in what she is teaching. She makes sure her students understand the information and can relate it to real life. The textbook is not required at all because you read it on your own. Not once did he require you bring it to class.
Great professor. Attendance isn't mandatory, but she doesn't post class notes online and does in class activities worth like 5 points each. Super nice, and very understanding. Became a much harder grader on the last couple assignments and dropped my grade.
Shannon is a great teacher! So far she is the best professor I've had at CMU. She cares so much for her students' grades and happiness with the course. Not a lot of extra credit given, but if you show up and take notes you won't need it.
She was a professor my freshman year, first semester. Going to class is not required but she does do in class assignments sometimes. She makes outlines for notes so you can listen to what she says and just fill in the blanks. Also, she gives hints when doing notes on what information will be on the examsfinal. I would love to have her again! :)
Loved her class, Her tests are straight forward from the notes but you need to study and make sure you get your observation hours in which she gives you plenty of time to make up!
Shannon is a saint! She posts fill in the blank notes to follow along with her power point, as long as you show up it's not hard at all. The assignments are simple, she's a very easy grader. Some pop quizzes and surprise EC writing assignments. Just make sure you go to class. Exams are fairly simple, and she's very helpful!
I absolutely loved Shannon, she was so charismatic and funny, it would be hard to not be interested in anything she was teaching. I found the class very easy, but then again I have a CDA. If you ever needed anything she would do anything to help. I would definitely take again!
She is honestly a great teacher and very helpful. You DO NOT need the book! Very expensive and we never opened it once. Her exams are actually very hard but if you study the notes you would be fine.
amazing professor, super clear and helpful. Provides notes guides for lectures and study guides for test. Highly recommend her
She is a very good professor. She is an easy grader and the tests and quizzes are very self explanatory and easy if you memorize all of the material well. She doesn't specifically explain what will be on the tests, so it makes it difficult to study, but overall it was a great class.
I LOVED having Shannon for HDF 100! She is incredibly sweet and understanding and I genuinely enjoyed her lectures. It is crucial that you attend class so you will not miss out on material or in-class assignments. She grades very fairly and offers an extra credit opportunity. If you can, I would DEFINITELY recommend taking Shannon's class!
She is a fabulous teacher and bing in her real life examples to the class. You do not need your book, its a waste to buy it! Not many quizzes or papers, and the final exam is not cumulative. I honestly would take this class again.
There are a few papers in this class, and as long as you attend lecture, exams are quite easy. Exams are all multiple choice, except for the final. Quizzes are given in class, as well as in-class writings. She always comes to class with a skip in her step, and a smile on her face. She is really into her lectures, and gives life examples.
good teacher overall. If you put in the effort your grade showed for it. There are few grades for the class (some bigger papers) that a lot of points. other than that she is compassionate about teaching and is a helpful professor. never used the book and lectures are crucial.
Great Professor. Easy A
She is such a great professor and cares about her students. She is laid back and nice.
Great professor!
It's a lecture, but it's not dry. She's hilarious and gives tons of examples. Reading isn't necessary (tests only on in class notes) but it definitely helps.
HDF 100 is fairly easy as it is but Shannon made it even easier. Her lectures are clear and she is passionate about the subject. She gives plenty of examples in her lecture and is super caring about all of her students. She is always available outside of class too. Would take again.
Shannon did great job teaching HDF 100. She's passionate about the topics and gives you skeleton notes. One thing is the way she writes questions for the tests is tricky, so make sure you study! Something that helped me was looking up concepts to get more information.
Super nice, doesn't take attendance but will have random in class assignments for credit. Cancels class often. Exams are somewhat difficult but all multiple choice. She drops the worst quiz grade. Gives guided notes but doesn't post fill-ins on BB, just the outline so if you miss class just ask a student for answers and you'll be fine to skip
Super passionate professor, very lecture-heavy. If you can avoid taking this as a morning class do it. It at times can be super boring. Her exams are okay, a lot of material to know so make sure you study for them.
She is such a sweet lady, she really cares! The book is not necessary at all! Never once opened it. Gives you an outline of the notes, fill in the blanks as she presents the powerpoint in class. Tests can be tricky sometimes, but she is very understanding and helpful!
Shannon is a very great professor who is really passionate about the subjects she teaches. Attendance is not mandatory, but she does in class assignments every once in awhile. She makes the class very easy and interesting. She also gives great feedbacks on the papers you write.
Shannon is a great lady who brings a lot of personality to the class. She makes lecture fun & enjoyable. She is very easy to talk to and is willing to work with students. She has 10 in class activities but other than that attendance isn't mandatory.
Awesome professor! I would definitely take her again. She is so passionate about this subject and she is always there to help anyone out. Loved her:)
Amazing professor! She provides fun lectures, even at 9am. She cancelled class a few times, which was difficult, but she was super understanding. Great at providing controversial or sensitive topics without offending anyone. My favorite professor so far. I HIGHLY recommend taking her class or any class with her.
Shannon is a nice woman and a good teacher. Very enthusiastic about the subject matter. Understanding if you have to miss class. However, she is so unorganized. Takes a long time to grade, cancelled class at least 10 times throughout the semester, and can be a tough grader. Never has time to meet outside of class and she never answers your emails.
Shannon is one of the best professors I have had at Central. It is obvious that she is extremely passionate about the subject she teaches, and her teaching methods allow easy comprehension in her class. I still to this day remember the stuff taught about as she is passionate and the topic is interesting.
This was my 2nd time taking HDF and it was so much better than the first. Shannon cares so much about her students and their success. I ran into some trouble with my grade, and she did all she could to help me pass! She is an excellent teacher with amazing, captivating lectures. I recommend her if you usually hate lectures- shes great at it!
Every single day is a lecture but she can easily get sidetracked. I LOVEEEE her she is the greatest professor I have ever had. Many quizzes and tests, they are hard but they are STRAIGHT from the notes. She does not let you turn in late work and is a very hard grader. She is definitely worth the studying, she cancels a lot for being sick etc.
I liked the Professor because she was clearly passionate about her subject matter. REALLY lecture heavy with a few quizzes and exams. Exams are tough and long. A few papers assigned throughout the term, and are graded really tough. Overall nice lady but really tough grader. I have never missed a class, yet didn't do to hot:(
Shannon was an awesome professor as long as you show up to class and take your notes you will do good in her class.
I really enjoyed this class with Shannon. She is a very sweet lady who truly cares about her students. The class is structured well, however, while attendance is not mandatory I would suggest it because she completely covers the notes needed for the exam. You do not need the book for this class if you go to the lectures.
Shannon is amazing!!!! Her exam questions come right from the lectures. She is funny and nice. I had no problem in her class. Almost always let us out of class early and was very clear with everything. Love her.
The class was pretty tough but if you came and took notes it would benefit you way better than not showing up to her class at all.
I had her for an HDF lecture and she really interacting with all 100 of us at one point or another. Her grading is far and few between with some pop quizzes that do not heavily affect your grade. I didn't show up 3-4 times and it didn't affect my grade really at all. She's great and I recommend her.
Shannon is super nice, is a great teacher and really loves what she does. There are some quizzes that she gives but they're only 5 questions long and she usually tells you what you need to know during lecture. There are 3 papers and they're all easy. She explains any assignment or paper out and gives clear instructions posted on blackboard
A real gem, she keeps the class going, is lecture heavy but keeps you engaged. Tests and quizzes are all in class. Take Shannon.
Shannon is such an amazing person. She connects well with the students and connects her notes to things that we can relate to. She gives you note outlines so you can listen to the lectures without worrying about taking too many notes. She gives 5 question quizzes a couple times and there are in class activities along with 3 papers. I recommend her
Shannon is a really great professor but in my opinion, her class was way harder than a 100 level class should be, and i'm a junior with a 3.8 so I know what i'm talking about. Her study guides are misleading, and the tests don't really coincide with the study guides she provides. Really struggled for an A in this class, and usually I don't!
Shannons an alright one. She is a very tough grader and changes up due dates quite a bit. Her quizs are hard and study guides arent the best
She is a great professor! She gives you note outlines, which makes the class really easy. Even though her multiple choice exams can be a little difficult, she grades essays easy enough to where you will be fine. There was also one chance for extra credit.
Taking HDF100 with Shannon was truly the most boring class I have ever taken. She only uses powerpoints making her classes extremely boring. Staying focused is very hard. She takes days or weeks to respond to emails, which makes it difficult to reach out if you need help. I would avoid her as a teacher if possible. Her teaching style is lacking.
Shannon is the biggest sweetheart. She is very passionate about what she is teaching and is amazing at explaining all material. I never wanted to skip her class because she made lectures fun and easy to listen to. She gives easy 5 point quizzes before exams that really help with your grade. She is also very understanding of everyones circumstances.
One of the best professors to ever have. The class is very simple and interesting. There are only three exams and three papers that are super simple. It is very hard to get lower than a B+.
Sweet teacher. Very honest, respectful, highly recommend!
Shannon was so fun! We got talking about our lives during class and how it connected to class and that really helped me understand the material. It was such a fun class and an easy one to take online during the pandemic.;)
There is not a lot of things to do in this class besides a couple ICAs and Papers, and of course the exams. But she is super nice and caring and makes class fun with all of her examples! She is always so positive and also very understanding! If you need this class for a UP or a major/minor, I suggest taking her!
She never answers emails and does nothing to try to help, I failed because she would never help me. The class content is really cool though.
Professor Sexton couldn't have made this class any easier. I wish COVID wasn't around because I know the in class lectures would've been just as fun. PLEASE take this class with her! you'll love it and it's an easy A!
An overall amazing professor. She is very caring and accessible to her students. Taught the class very well, exams and quizzes were not difficult at all. Also gives really good feedback on the papers you write.
I couldnt give enough good words about Professor Sexton if I tried. She loves her job, shes very lecture heavy but its so easy to follow with her, shes very understanding and the tests and quizzes we take are easy as long as you study!! 10/10 would definitely take her class again.
Shannon is such a caring prof. You can tell she is very passionate about what she is teaching as well unlike other profs Ive had. There are very few assignments and she removes your lowest quiz score. The actual exams are pretty tricky but the content overall is pretty interesting!
Shannon is a very nice person but she made this 100 level course way too difficult. She also only lectured which made it really easy to zone out and be uninterested. The course was called lifespan development but we talked about babies and toddlers for 13/16 weeks. She makes the tests extremely hard and puts things on them that we did not go over
Professor Sexton is a great professor! She's super kind and has a strong interest in the subject. As long as you show up to class you'll have 99% of everything you need to take the tests and quizzes. She was always willing to explain things better if needed and was super accessible via email.
Professor Sexton is SO nice! She is very understanding when it comes to personal matters and is willing to work around certain obstacles. Her lectures are very easy to follow and she gives all of the information that will be needed for the test. While attendance isn't mandatory, showing up is so important because she doesn't post her lectures.
Shannon is the sweetest! The textbook is optional, lots of material covered in each lecture so you won't want to skip any, but attendance doesn't count against you. Classes are lecture-note style, which is good because you have all the material you will possibly need if you take notes. Very interesting material!
Very nice professor! However her exams make absolutely no sense. I came close to failing every single exam and I used my notes to make sure I selected the correct answer. She's a tougher grader on the writings as well, so if it looks like you aren't trying she will give you a poor grade.
This class is by far the worst I've taken it was not even supposed to be online but she just moved it there. she doesn't post her presentations so you have to go to class, that's not the problem. The problem is her tests have nothing to do with the stuff on the presentations/study guides or even what she says. Studying is almost entirely pointless
Make sure you come to class because the lectures are not posted. This is a very lecture heavy class but she provides note outlines and if you fill them out it ensures you write down everything on the PowerPoints. She has quizzes but they are only 5 questions all multiple choice, they are usually announced ahead of time. She is very easy to talk to
She is horrible at communication. Takes weeks and many emails sent to finally receive a response. Class was supposed to be fully in person but she decided on her own to make it fully online. Never has her camera on. Grade is based on exam grades. Her study guides have nothing to do with what is on the exams at all.
Shannon is so sweet. She clearly knows what she is talking about and is caring throughout the course. I will agree with others that her communication lacks. But, as long as you show up to class, take notes, and put effort into assignments your all set. She adjusted dates and created study groups.
Shannon is a ver sweet and caring professor and person, however this class is very lecture heavy. If you miss one, you'll need to get the notes from a classmate. Tests are hard and situation based but everything you need is in the lecture notes. I would recommend studying early and using quizlets to study way beforehand to get a good grade
This was supposed to be an in-person class but Shannon decided to make it online the entire semester because of a knee problem that I have had that isn't very painful and you can walk around completely fine. She didn't turn her camera on once the whole semester and exams have nothing to do with the material she taught or what was on the study guide
Optional textbook. Optional chapter outlines/fill in the blank notes (i recommend doing for exam study guide because her's doesn't include all that will be on exam). 2 essays, fairly easy. Almost no other assignments. All lecture.
Signed up for this class as an in-person class and she changed it to all online. She has also canceled class way too many times, even after switching it to all online. Much of what she presents in class is incorrect and copied and pasted from the internet and is incorrect, even contradicting the book on several occasions.
I took Shannon for HDF100, and the class was supposed to be in person, but it was moved online or the entire semester. She gave out note guides, though the tests were always hard.
Easiest WI credit you'll ever take. Wrote 2 papers the entire semester, plus 3 total exams, 2 quizzes. She doesn't post notes, so you have to show up and pay attention. Enthusiasm is never-ending. Super caring. Rounds final grades based on participation in class. Big complaint is when she moved an in-person class to all online due to her own needs.
