She's okay. I've had better Biology teaches. She teaches things clearly enough but she;s a little boring!
This class was ridiculous. Half the class dropped in the first few weeks due to her incomprehensible teaching style. Exams were way harder than any other 2000-level I'd taken, and they're all your grade comes from so you better do well. A nice person, but not a good professor. Wait for Carter if you need to take Cell Bio.
To be fair i had this class at 8am, so naturally any professor pretty much sucks that early, but i felt that i really didn't learn much from her at all. She's not very approachable. In lecture she comes, spits out information and that's it. AND she loves clicker questions which make it mandatory to go to class...
Her teaching style definitely was not for me. She has very unreadable hand writing and tended to write over what she previously wrote so by the end of lectures the board was one giant scribble. Her tests are all that she enters into your grade and they are very challenging and difficult. She is a nice person but not a very good professor
I think she's improved a lot since these other posters posted. She seemed very engaged, was willing to slow down- devoted an entire day to review before every test; yes the material is very hard, but just make sure you review your book often so you dont forget stuff from earlier.
Her teaching style is nothing but spitting out information and making a huge mess on the chalkboard.. she is incredibly smart but has no idea how to teach .. Tests are very difficult. Definitely not a professor you should take unless you are very familiar with biology already. When she explains topics she writes over what she has already written
She wasn't very organized so it was hard to take notes while she was lecturing. The exams didn't feel like they were properly testing my knowledge of the material provided. Lab exams were fairly easy. Go to review session day in class.
Professor Stevenson is highly intelligent and passionate for biology. However, as others have posted, she lacks the ability to convey her knowledge in a way that is conducive to learning. The only way you will do well in this class is luck, or by being able to decipher her incredibly wordy and confused test questions.
Ideas were not clear when explained in class, I learned way more from reading the book. She talks about things in no particular order, you are left questioning what? when did we learn or read that?
She tends to skip around a lot making lectures extremely hard to follow. If you walk in late to this class be prepared to be freaked out on because you coming in late "disrupts the class"..and yeah ridiculous reaction to tardiness isn't disruptive? All in all i would not recommend taking Biology with this professor.
As others have posted the lectures are hard to follow. She uses the chalkboard and powerpoint simultaneously and she skips around a lot. Some test questions were really confusing and yes, some questions just didn't belong on a test.
Stevenson makes lots of diagrams on the chalkboard. just try to follow along with her. reading the book helps tremendously. she is a very smart lady, she is just a little disorganized with her drawings and has a lot of material to cover in one semester.
She is the only science teacher to ever actually make me hate biology. The lab is easy, discussions are pointless (but help with the lab grade), and the lecture is absolutely redundant. Stevenson has horrible notes and her tests don't actually test your knowledge of the material. Her tests are hard, the rest of the class is easy.
Great professor! Everything pretty much comes from the book. just put in your time studying and you should do well. she must've gotten better from what previous people were saying. I recommend her for Cell Biology
Her tests are difficult but like previously stated not impossible. All the answers are in the book and her lectures, or are covered in lab, it justs requires studying. She is very smart, a bit intimidating though, I wouldnt come into her class late. Make sure to follow along in lecture instead of spacing out and you will do just fine.
She is a smart lady, but she does not know how to teach and convey knowledge. Her tests are wordy and confusing. By far the hardest class I have ever taken in college. If you have to take it pray Clay Carter is teaching it.
Had Stevenson for Cell Bio. I couldn't stand her at the time I took the class. Smart lady, but doesn't always explain stuff very well. You will learn to love your book because this is a HARD class! but, DO take it with Stevenson if you plan to continue taking biology course. She covers ALL the important stuff well and It pays HUGE dividends later!!
I thought she was pretty strict at first. I was able to find her study guide online and use it for the test. I memorized like 8 pages 3 hours before the test and got A-'s on all of them and a B on the final. Use the study guides. it'll save you from reading the book:)
Very good and challenging professor. I learned a lot this semester, and had to work hard for it. I went to her office many times and every time (even outside of office hours) she was very willing to help. I would suggest the class as long as you are interested in the subject
She doesn't understand that a lot of students coming into the class haven't had a lot of background in cell biology and forgets to explain the basic concepts before jumping into things so no matter what you feel behind. A good note is she is much better with specific questions and one on one situations
She could EASILY make the cell bio exams much harder than they are, she is very approachable outside of class and is very willing to help students during office hours. Definitely work in a group on the Problem sets. Also she's very helpful in Cell Bio lab, grades hard at first in lab, but she will help you a ton if you just ask for help.
She can be a little difficult and quite frankly annoying in a big lecture, but she is extremely helpful one on one. Overall, she is a nice professor and wants her students to learn the material. Cell bio isn't for everyone
Shannon's exam are challenging! YOU MUST STUDY! She gives problem sets before every exam that take a while to complete, they suck. Class is sometimes interesting but you need to read and do the practice problems at the end of the chapters, she take some questions from them for exams.
I have Shannon for Biology 1 and I absolutely hate her way of teaching. I got an A in all 7 science classes high school Including biology. Then I got to college. Shannon's EXAMS ARE DEATH. her test questions are very CONFUSING. Also in class she doesn't explain things, she expects you to already know how everything works beforehand. It's very hard.
She is an absolutely awful teacher. I would recommend never taking one of her classes if you don't need to. She doesn't explain anything well and then her tests are harder than hell even if you do study for days beforehand. If you are placed in her class, switch immediately.
Dr. Stevenson is a great professor. She is very helpful, friendly, and is always willing to answer questions. She also caters to all different learning styles. As long as you pay attention, ask questions, and read the book every once and awhile you will do well.
This professor was a good professor but she went by so fast to the point where I lost track. Her exams are totally complicated, more complicated than the practice ones she provides. If I was to retake it I would take it with belke
Shannon is one of my least favorite professors so far at UMD. She goes through too much material in one class and leaves you feeling confused and frustrated. I took notes on everything for the first half of the semester and stopped because it didn't help my grade out whatsoever. Just sit and listen to her lectures. First class i didn't receive an A
Dr. Stevenson is my advisor as well as my professor, and as I have gotten to know her I do think she means very well. She is extremely smart and dedicated to her profession. Very respectable. She makes me think, and work very hard. A skill that not only she pushes you to, but teaches also.
The class is very demanding but many points are based on participation and helps your grade immensely. I'd say an above average professor that wants everyone to succeed.
Stevenson is very smart, but she makes exam so much harder than it needs to be. Even if you study for days beforehand there is a chance that you won't succeed. HER EXAMS ARE DEATH! I would recommend not taking her courses if you are looking for an A. You won't get it here.
Dr. Stevenson is a great professor, who truly wants everyone to understand the material and succeed. The course is, however, very demanding. She provides YouTube videos to go along with reading in preparation for the next day's lecture, which is super helpful! Her tests are difficult in that they use not "identifying" but more "applying" questions
She knows her stuff and definitely has the attitude that she will not lower the bar just to make you feel better. She sets the standard, gives you everything you need to achieve the standard along with a vast amount of resources. She's i be of those teachers that if you fail, it's not because she didn't try, but because you didn't try.
Science can be hard, but she does a great job of making clear what you need to know for exams. You'll need to do a bit of reading outside of class. Follow her instructions, watch the videos she provides, go to atleast 34 of the class times and you'll be fine.
She did a good job of explaining everything that was covered. But Moodle and Mastering Biology access are crucial to getting a good mark; just like reading the book, you have to do everything she says or you'll have a bad time.
Her tests are really hard, study a lot for them. She is a good teacher and knows what she is talking about but expects a lot and grades tough.
Biology is not easy and a lot of work. But if you put in the effort you will do well in her class. She is always available for students in her office or through email, ask questions a lot she is extremely helpful! If you read, go to class, and study you will do fine and probably get an A! so much passion for her job, loved all the classes with her
She does a really good job of trying to diversify her teaching methods, some are more effeective than others. There's only so much you can do in a lecture hall. She great at helping you during her office hours and you leave them feeling much more confident for tests. Can be confusing at times. A lot of optional busy work and reading before each day
She is my favorite professor at UMD. She is very inspirational, she makes everything very interesting. She is extremely helpful if you want to learn from her. She is very organized and has a great supportive personality. She doesn't make you feel like stupid. She takes you from the bottom and carries to the top one step at a time.
I think Dr. Stevenson is a great professor. This is college, you can't expect to just attend the classes and hope that they are enough. You must watch the online videos and do assignments that she gives. She is a very nice lady to approach. On top of that, she gives weekly extra credit. If you do all of them, I'm sure it'll boost up your grade!
Great prof, offers unique and supplementary ways of teaching. Has online videos and worksheets that help IMMENSELY in understanding the course material. Usually lectured half the time and worked on/went through worksheets the other half.
It seems like she adds a lot more to the class than there needs to be, but overall she was alright. Really really study however, and watch the online videos. Or else you don't have much chance.
Best prof at UMD
Need to go to class for online participation and notes. Went to get help for online homework and she walked through it with me, mostly did it herself but I understood it a lot better after she explained it. The tests were multiple choice and the final was only a regular test.
It was the BEST class that I have taken at UMD. Compared to other professors, she cared about our learning experience very much, she helped us find ways to teach ourselves, she was a great professor and a guide. I highly recommend Dr. Stevenson!
She's lectures pretty well and is engaging but her tests are fairly difficult.
Dr. Stevenson is a very clear lecturer. She explains difficult concepts in easy ways. Small quizzes three times a week and four big exams. Very easy if you put in the work to study and learn the material throughly. Cares a lot about her students and wants to help them succeed.
She was great at lectures and very helpful. Her tests were very challenging. She has all multiple choice questions but each answer she provides is correct you just have to pick the best one for that option, and for someone like me that's very hard to pick. Pay attention and do all of the homework and extra credit!!!
She is a great professor. However has very tough tests, the questions are hard, and very applied. I never scored above a 70% in her class on tests but ended with a B- because she has tons of homework and extra credit so take that seriously!!!
Dr. Stevenson is very kind and genuinely cares about her students learning. Take the homework and lab quizzes seriously because they add up and can make or break your grade. The exams are very applied so study the videos she assigns and go to class and take notes to study you will be fine.
This class is not a walk in the park. I really enjoyed this class be every lecture is engaging. The best way to pass with a good grade is to read, do the homework and preclass homework, study, and attend the out of class study sessions. I would take this class again if I could. Shannon is awesome!
Dr Stevenson's before class and after class Youtube videos, in-class activities, and clicker questions are extremely helpful and her tests are very fair. The class requires a lot of effort, but she is very accessible for office hours and extra help. Made a hard class bearable and even interesting with engaging lectures and real life examples.
Great professor! Her lectures were very helpful and she cared about her students. She provided a lot of ways for students to learn.
Great teacher. You get plenty of practice through pre-class homework and In class clicker questions. If you put in work and read the book you should get a good grade.
Dr. Stevenson gives you everything you need to know thats going to be covered on tests. Her class videos were very helpful for studying and her lectures were very clear. This is a biology class so you should expect going into it that you will have to put in work to get the grade you want.
Stevenson is very nice professor who is always willing to help. Her lectures are interesting, organized, and helpful. There will be homework that consists of reading a section or two of the textbook and 5 minutes of easy online quizzes that go along with the reading. If you stay on top of the homework, this class will be a breeze.
Gives good feedback and is very willing to help/ answer any questions you may have. Classes are very well organized, and she is the fastest grader I have ever had at UMD. Some material can be challenging, but she provides all the right tools for you to succeed.
Online summer class so made the class very fast paced with things due everyday. I would not say it was a difficult class. If I had put more effort I could have gotten an A. She gave very good feedback on all the assignments and was accessible which is important for online classes. Get ready to read though, the assignments come with a lot of reading
Cell biology is half flipped so it can get annoying, but the online videos are good to watch if you don't learn from I class activities. The class isn't too bad but it's a bit of work.
Dr. Stevenson clearly cares a lot about her students and tries to make her lectures connect to real life as much as possible. Her exams are difficult but once you get the hang of her question style they become much easier. Grading on exams+short weekly HW+long monthly HW. Study hard and you will be successful.
Dr. Stevenson teaches very quickly and talks as if you know a lot more than you really do. You definitely won't pass if you don't show up to the lectures and labs/discussions. Not a class I enjoyed attending even though I love biology.
Shannon is a good lecturer and passionate about what she is talking about. Very fast-paced though. Be sure to go to class for clicker points and the exams are only off of what she goes over in lecture. The exams are hard but if you put in effort you should receive a score you like. I think she is one of the better Biology 1 professors you can take.
Really great professor. The class is fairly difficult but she gives you tons of resources to do well. Class is lecture heavy but provides group activities that help. Clicker questions for points. Provides study guides for exams, additional lecture videos online, as well as additional office hours for group problem sets.
She talks very fast. I encourage watching her pre-class and post-class videos - very helpful. Draws many visuals during notes; her lectures/notes aren't word heavy. She provides a lot of practice, and her in-class activities are a good measure of the exams. Online assignments due twice a week (pre-class and homework), but they are not difficult.
She is one of the best professors in the Biology department. She teaches some of the harder classes at UMD, but does it very well.
She's very nice and helpful. The exams and assignments are very very tough, but can be done if you put in 100%.
I'm not good at biology, so I am not the best source for this, but do not take her class. She knows too much, but doesn't know how to teach it. She tries to find the hardest questions possible to put on the tests, but I'm pretty sure she doesn't realize we need to pass this to graduate.
Pretty good teacher, cares about her students. Her homework is pretty hard, especially her problem sets. The problem sets require a lot of knowledge you would not have simplay from course material. Her exams are pretty straight forward and she offers a lot of time outside of class to get help.
Good professor. Hard tests but cover only lecture material. Reading book will help you pass.
Professor Stevenson was very good at explaining hard material. She goes through material pretty fast so it's hard to keep up sometimes, but she's really nice helping outside of class if you need it. Make sure you read the book because it will help to solidify concepts.
Big workload for this course but that is not surprising given it is a biology course. I found that the daily assignments, weekly homework, readings, and even the extra credit did not set me up to exceed on the exams. Put in great study hours, given the completely online experience I did alright but definitely could have been better if in person.
It's a hard class, that's just a fact. If you want to learn, Shannon WILL teach you every single thing that you need to know, without fail. I actually took this class a year ago and i'm coming back now to say im SO grateful that I had Shannon as a professor. She has taught me heaps that I still rely on for all of my high level classes.
Dr. Stevenson has the potential to be an amazing professor. Yet, the learning format this semester was subpar. Instead of providing true lectures, we had short videos three days a week. Convenient for some, inconvenient for those who want to learn. Unfortunately seemed that we were having to teach ourselves. Read your textbook, or you will fail!
Prof Stevenson does a really great job at teaching you everything you need to know to do well in this class. If you pay attention, go to lecture, go to office hours, and use the textbook you will do well. It is a difficult class but she is very willing to help students with any concepts they struggle with. Also just a interesting and cool class.
Stevenson is a great professor as she gives many opportunities to students to ask her questions and give good feedback. The content in this class was difficult as with her "problem sets" and exams. As long as you go to her office hours when working on problem sets and keep up the intensive reading you should be fine.
I had Dr. Stevenson for online previously, which was awful. I wanted to give her a second chance. The lab she instructed was awful, it didn't correlate to lecture. She provided minimal, if any, background info on what we covered in lab. Very little points can be earned in class with a group project being 10% of grade. Do not take online or for lab.
Shes a really great professor and good at making you understand hard topics. Her office hours are very helpful. Clicker questions during lecture will count for attendance so you dont want to miss class. Shes very willing to help and teach!
Dr. Stevenson is absolutely incredible. Her class is flipped 50/50 so get ready to use lots of worksheets and groups which honestly helps a lot. The exams and 4 problem sets can be a bit challenging but in all honesty, if you go to her office hours frequently or at least for the sets/ exams you will have no issue getting a solid B in the class.
Professor Stevenson gave wonderful lectures and was very supportive to every student. She made it very comfortable to come to office hours and ask questions or recommend study routines. She will work with you to help you understand the topic, as it can be complicated and she expects a lot from students.
She lectures very fast and is hard to keep up with. Her lecture slides dont have words on them so its hard to review for exams (so ake detailed notes). She expects you to know material and when you dont she gets upset.
Wow this class was hard! She clearly understands the topic but it is hard to understand her during lectures. I just sit there saying "man I dont have a clue what she is saying maybe I should change my major" eventually end up getting a B or C on the exams so maybe she isnt that bad but I struggled pretty hard with many anxiety tense moments in here
Stevenson lectures fast because she knows the content. End of the day, it is your responsibility to keep up, but she provides the resources to make this possible. Keep the book on hand at all times because she likes to expand upon the material and you won't pass without a solid foundation. Every personal interaction was swell. Great professor!
Dr. Stevenson was a great professor; she was very knowledgeable and cared about students' success. Her class was challenging, but she will help you through it if you ask. Overall, Dr. Stevenson was wonderful, I would for sure recommend her to a friend.
Dr. Stevenson makes her courses hard, but DON'T LET THIS DETER YOU. I have learned significantly more in her classes than any other class in my undergrad thus far. After only a short time, I have grown an incredible amount as a student and gained skills I'm not sure I could get with any other professors. Seriously cannot recommend enough.
Dr. Stevenson was an amazing teacher. I went into undergrad terrified I would hate biology. However, Dr. Stevenson completely flipped my opinion on the entire field and has lit a fire in me to continue my studies here. She is very thorough in her lectures and I couldn't recommend her more.
Dr. Stevenson is very nice and you can tell she really cares about the class. If you attend class, study well, and put in the work, you will excel in this class. The exams can be hard, but class averages were usually around 75%, which is not bad at all. Lab and discussion is pretty boring, but not difficult.
Definitely go to lectures because that's where you learn most of the material, she does go a little fast so make sure you pay attention, but she is very nice and genuinely wants to make sure you understand everything. She's very lenient about grading so if you turn something in late, you can still get points.
I am taking Shannon right now and it is terrible. She has never given anyone full credit and the mean for each assignment is low. We are writing a paper, it has taken half of the semester and she is a harsh grader. So far the highest grade is a 75% and she states how she has been doing this for 20+ years so she will not be curving. AVOID HER!
Dr. Stevenson is very clear about what she expects from students and is ready to help if you need it. Exams are difficult and memorization based, but that's just Gen Bio I. She gives many opportunities for extra credit that actually help you learn the material, and you get three chances on the homework. Lectures go quick w/ little info on slides.
I am currently taking the cell bio lab and it is awful. She explains everything as if you were a 5th grader but grades you as if you were a graduate student. She never gives anyone full points and always finds something wrong in your work. She seems like she cares but then is incredibly rude.
She is very enthusiastic about what she teaches, but doesn't give a clear understanding of exam material. Also doesn't provide a great way to study for the exams. All multiple choice, though.
the professor was very test heavy, some stuff on the test you don't study or know, very little to no extra credit, tests make or break your grade
Professor Stevenson is enthusiastic and really wants students to succeed. Exams are difficult but fair, and there are great extra credit opportunities. unstuck AI helped me prepare effectively.
She is such a kind teacher, and she is always willing to help. Attendance in lecture isn't mandatory, but there is in-class graded participation for like 2 points every lecture, and discussion and labs are required. I highly recommend trying to get in all three of her sections for all your classes.
This was a difficult course, but Stevenson made things so interesting. While her use of group work was frustrating at times, it did help me learn a lot. Definitely take her if you are going to be taking Cell Biology. Do not let the 8 am classes deter you, it is incredibly worth having her as a professor.
Tests are hard with all these random ass curveball questions. READ THE TEXTBOOK
Talks too fast in lectures and knows it, but doesn't change? Definitely recommend the other biology 1011 professor if you take longer to learn; his teaching style is much more efficient.
Please avoid her 8 am lectures at all costs. Horrible lecturer
I actually enjoyed taking this class and she is a great professor and knows what she's talking about. The workload was manageable, and she posts lectures before class which I took advantage of and seemed to help me focus in class. Tests are pretty difficult so studying is a must. Overall, I thought this class was interesting and I learned a lot.
I asked her to round 0.022% and she refused. What the hell. But good teacher though.
