Great guy, cares about his students
The best.
not very good
great teacher...helpful
he is an excellent teacher
Sullivan is a great prof!! Will do anything to help you out
saved my ass in math 1001, would not have passed without his help awesome prof!
shannon patrick for life!
doesn't really teach just repeats what he knows. good guy.
Amazing prof! So nice and ALWAYS willing to help you if you have problems!
Shannon is a great teacher who is very helpful and is willing to help you whenever possible. but the one thing about shannon is he is hard, in order to get a good mark in his class you have to do ALOT of work.
Great Prof, good lectures, great notes (lots but good), friendly/very helpful one on one. Strongly recommend him.

I had Sullivan in my first year and he failed me! I consider my self as a hard working student and I worked very hard in that subject and he still failed me.... He is nice in person but he failed me by 2%. I don't think he is helpful.
Great teacher!Very clear and detailed notes.but keep in mind, lots of work to do.
Sure he's hard... but since when was calculus easy. His notes are wicked - very detailed and clear. If you ask for help you get it. Great one on one. Best math prof at MUN

I am not really a math guy but come one, let's have some help here! Unclear.
Wicked Prof!!
Really good math prof.... his notes are awesome, his tests are reasonable and he's always willing to help you!!! I barely passes 1001, but am doing wicked in 2000 because he actually explains things!
Bad prof, just simply bad!
anyone who rates this guy poorly is simply bitter about getting a bad mark in a tough course, because he's as friendly and helpful as is humanly possible to each and every student and is an excellent, natural teacher to boot. very highly recommended.
I love this prof. He's so helpful and easy to get along with. Yes, Math 200 is tough, but he does a good job of making it easier.
I've done 8 math courses so far. Profs really don't get any better. & any bad comment on this page is completely bull, becuase I've never even heard of a student disliking this prof. BUCK UP, & work harder losers!
Awesome prof! Explains things fully, and has great explanations! His tests are a little tough, but no too bad. He went out of his way to look up what math courses I needed for my degree (which is not a math degree) and recommended some courses. Great prof, would recommend to anyone! Very helpful!
AWESOME!!!
Very good in lectures, however I was disappointed that all the notes are theory with few examples. He is very good one on one.
He's a great prof, always there to help you and seems to be very concerned about how well his students do. Notes are great and tests are not overly hard, with no surprises. i would definetly recomend this prof to everyone.
Excellent! Anyone who rates below a 5 for easiness should not be taking math courses. Memorize the proofs, and know how to do the assignments and you're set. There are no surprises on tests or finals, and he is best kind one-on-one. Holla for Shannon Sullivan!
Great guy and very helpful within and outside the course. He puts in a lot of extra time for preparation and advice so I'd say get him for a teacher if you can - don't listen to that bull about getting crushes - he's cool.
He is an excellent prof.Very helpful and his assignments and tests are always fair. If at all possible take any course taught by him.
Wicked prof. He is so helpful and easy to approach. I would recommend him for any math course, he is definately one of the best at MUN!
Very detailed notes but not enough examples! He very willing to help though. Also, ask him about Who wants to be a Millionaire. He was on it and is very proud haha.
Good fellow :) Extremely smart. Im not great at math so I can't say anything about the toughness of the course. Hes is very willing to help. Overall, study your notes and do extra questions in the text :) But thumbs up!
Very good prof. His notes are really detailed but they don't include many examples. Always willing to help with anything. As long as you do and study the assignments you will be fine!
This is a tough course. Sullivan is a good marker. If you show that you have SOME idea of what do to on your tests/exams he will give you marks. His tests/exams are very fair. I did not find class helpful at all. To much writing not enough examples. John O'Riley taught me this course.
He's a good guy. Explains concepts and examples well and is generally very helpful. He makes Math 1000 far less painful than some other profs.
Shannon is a really good guy. His lectures are very good and his notes are clear. He also gives lots of examples. His exams are straight forward with no surprises. Funny at times do. Highly recommend him A+
Sullivan is a good prof but Math 1090 was hard in the Fall semester because our class was so big. I recommend going to his tutorials. His notes arent online so attendance is mandatory, unless you have a friend in the class. You have an assignment a week, due on Fridays. Overall the assignments are there to help your mark, although it does suck havi
He is a really nice guy who I find to be helpful, although his notes are too much writing and sometimes not enough examples. tends to make things more confusing than they need to be, but overall nice guy and I would take his class again
I find this prof to be useless at explaining things. He makes things much, much more complicated than they should be and he doesn't go over enough examples to be of any use with assignments. His assignments are also too long to do and pointless to do all of it since it doesn't all get corrected.
He's always willing to help you out, and make time for you in his office. He's also very prompt in answering e-mails, and makes you feel like you're his only student when you have a problem. Probably the best math teacher I've ever had, and his notes are pretty awesome. I just wish he would do more examples!
So this guy is nice enough. But he makes no sense. He talks way to much to the point that what he says makes no sense. He can't explain things for the life of him. I would recomend avoiding him if at all possible.
he write the notes very fast. so you cant really be focus to the lecture, your main priorety will be to take notes before it gone. if he does more examples and write slower he will be good. dont take him. just avoid him.
Very nice guy and does all he can to help! Needs to write more examples for assignments. Overall awesome prof and I would definatly recommend him and I would take his class again.
Sullivan lacks the ability to explain things coherently. He complicates the simple concepts and skims over the complex and often crucial information. He does put effort into being helpful if you need it.
Great prof - helpful, enthusiastic, got me to understand math and not just copy from examples. Too bad most of my classmates are lazy **es who chatted thru every lecture and apparently think that being asked to put some thought into a concept is like being slapped in the face. "Can't explain things", my arse. If you actually want to learn, get him!
this was the worst class i have ever attended, i learnt nothin and needed to attend a tutorial to learn the material he was supposed to teach. I do not recomend this prof to anyone
bhahaha this guy is a damn joke! seriously people, do not take him, take loveless. my friends who had loveless came in and sat in for our class and just laughed! all he does is write notes and never ever gives examples and if he does they are crap! i hated going to his class and he is so borning. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
i'd say he'd be better for an actual university-level math course, but i thought he was really good.... really clear (tho challenging too, which i kind of appreciated) and extremely helpful. i don't get people who say he didn't give enough examples, there were lots every day. hope i get him again for claculus.
This prof is a fairly easy marker but is almost impossible to follow. Notes are bad. Gets off topic to much and don't get to te point.
I thought Sullivan was great! He gave an excelent set of notes (WITH EXAMPLES). He really fitted my teaching style. Be prepared for constant note-taking but if you go to class and take his notes, you will not need to buy a book. The only negative I had with this prof was the fact that he never gave you any time to try a problem yourself.
I think it's quite telling that Mr. Sullivan is rated highly amongst almost all students, except some of those from math 1090... a course that is normally taken by weaker math students, many of which would prefer the answers given (work=bad), and has an extremely high failure rate. Rest assured, Mr. Sullivan is one of (if not the) best profs at MUN
As far as math teacher go, he is definitely one of the best. His notes are extremely clear (although wordy, it must be the writer in him), and his tests are fair. If you go to class and study his notes you will more than likely get a decent mark. The final exam, however, was brutal but aside from that, excellent prof
Good guy but extremely****ty notes. He gives an insane amount of notes while talking at light speed simultaneous, thus making learning anything in class impossible.
He is quick in class because this course is actually not small. He is a good prof and gives notes that explain, step by step, how to do it. Pay attention and study and don't lose your head on tests some questions might be disguised as something much easier than you think. He is usually around all the time to help in his office, take advantage of it.
I'd heard horror stories, but I was a big fan. It could have been the hour and fifteen time slot, but I absorbed much more in this calculus than previous attempts. Does move fairly quickly, so there is a possibility that you'll miss out on something small and then lose your place, but he is VERY willing to help outside of class.
Shannon is amazing.Didn't even buy the text, he's notes were enough, notes also transfered well to assignments. He didn't bog tests or exams with algebra or disgusting integrals. If you go to class and do assignments you'll pass without a thought! very approachable! go with Shannon you won't be let down
His notes are incredible, if you can manage to write them down as best as possible then you can be sure you're set. Attending class and doing the assignments is mandatory because most of his assignment questions show up on the midterms. Something he is hard to listen to, and hard to follow, but his notes are impecable, as is his willingness to help
So I'm one of those guys who falls behind in note-taking in his class, and let me tell you--this guy is AMAZING! Most helpful guy on the planet, creates his own world inside his class and draws you into it with vivid, practical examples. If you're struggling, he won't hesitate to help you, in or out of class. Great personality, wrote his own book!!
worstttt prof i have this semester. I came out of highschool with a 90 in math, now i have a 55. I find him unclear in explaing the material. I go to the help center and all they do is look at my notes and then bash him. I don't know how anyone understands this guy!
Shyeah, whatever dude. Shannon's notes are awesome! Very clear & helpful - everything you need for the assignments & tests is there. There maybe a bit wordy, but I'd rather too much explanation than not enough. Plus he gives lots of extra examples on his web site & is great 1-on-1. Wish he was teaching Math 1000 next semester!!!
Amazing teacher. Easy to understand and approachable. I would take another course with him anyday
Ok, so I scammed this rating in even though he's not my prof. I had him for 1001, and my 2000 prof is foreign, so not the best in terms of outside help. E-mailed Shannon, and he was more than happy to help me out with the material for my first quiz. Now I see him every week. Bought the man a Christmas present. Will def. be in his 3260 if possible.
Absolutely Terrible!, everything he says is impossible to understand. he goes extremely fast through material then takes 20 mins to explain printing presses and where words come from. will do anything to avoid him next term including dropping course if necessary. avoid him at all costs. i had a 90 in math in high school and am struggling to pass
Pretty good prof. If you having problems, he will sit with you and try to help you out until you understand the material.
I thought he was brutal, and spent waay to much time talking about theory, and making it the concepts seem much more complicated then they actually are. I think he makes learning 1090 math much harder than it has to be.
He is a very nice guy , totally approachable but his notes have way way to many words , sometimes one question would take up a whole page due to all the words he throws in. you can tell he is great at math , i had him for 1090 and found it very hard to follow , maybe better for 1000?
Was very nice (although he needs to calm down when people leave early). However his examples used in his lectures consisted of long complicated paragraphs, lectures were useless. However if you go to him for help he will teach you well. My only wish was that he used real math examples when teaching, found the course very difficult as a result.
Horrible at explinations, and teaching in general. Would not reccomend taking his class.
I'm willing to bet that every person who's given this prof a bad rating failed his course. Well, too bad for you. He takes teaching very seriously and expects his students to do the same. It's called University people, get used to it. This includes Math 1090... last I checked you got university credit for it. If you want high-school level, go back!
I done 1090 with Dr. Sullivan last year and, yah, I found it pretty tough. But now that I done Math 1000, I get how well he prepared us for it. He helped get me used to how Math is taught in university, which made doing the calc alot easier. I don't think I would of done nearly as well if it wasn't for Dr. Sullivan.
avoid
Anybody who'd give Shannon a '1' for Helpfulness didn't even try. The man is Helpful to a fault. I spent hours in his office last semester, and he never once seemed impatient or anything less than Helpful. A++!
He's very helpful and wants his students to do well. I like how he has 3 tests throughout the semester instead of only 2 which is what the rest of the prof have.
Kind of annoying. Nice but wasent really engaged with his class. Mostly read what was on the projector. Ps we know how to read.
Way too many notes. Notes were hard to follow and paying attention in class was hard when you're trying to keep up with notes. If you don't use his method on tests you don't get the marks unfortunately.
great guy. great prof. very smart!
Probably the worst prof I had all year. He really knows his stuff, but cant seem to teach it. Reads math notes off of a slide, not near enough examples. Extremely helpfull on a one on one basis, but useless in a class. Unless you plan on spending all semester in the math building, I'd aviod his class.
I'll admit his is a very nice person and I guess he tries to be helpful, but his notes are just big paragraphs with unclear explanations and very few actually examples. you can tell he knows his stuff, he's just not great at explaining it.
he was a fairly good prof, i have to say after taking math 1000 before and having a rough time with it,he certainly renewed my interest in math. his teaching style is perfect for someone who is (good/likes to)memorize information/definitions. If your a science student, Biology,Psychology, etc. i would highly recommend this prof!
He's a legit nice guy, always great for help outside of class, but lectures are horrible. His explainations are long paragraphs of words. Who wants words in a course involving numbers? God love him for trying, but I would suggest avoiding him at all cost (Loveless on the other hand is a GREAT math prof)
To the last rater: I think ur confused. Math isn't about 'numbers.' Math is about 'concepts,' which Sullivan expresses clearly and elegantly. I guess if ur just looking to skate thru the course, he might not be what ur looking for. But if u actually want to learn math, Sullivan's awesome. Am now considering a math major because of him.
Funny. Keeps its real. Im in a class of 350 and I feel like there are only 10 of us. I think he gives lots of examples. Also puts up worksheets. Do the worksheets get an 'A' on your test. Its that easy.
He's an excellent prof. His notes are excellent and he's funny. Would definitely recommend him to anybody!
He can be pretty annoying but there are a lot of worse profs. out there. He writes a lot of notes, and they are never online. So, he's a decent prof to have.
great for math 1000 and 2000. gives good examples, the assignments aren't too hard, the tests are decent and get you well prepared for the final.
recommended! the guy knows his math
This is the only prof on earth that will email you back when you email him at 2am the night before a test. Actually cares about his students. LOTS OF EXAMPLES. Knows his stuff and how to explain the concept of the material. Would recommend!
Very good teacher. Lots of notes and examples. Its like taking a class with Ross from Friends teaching it. You'll know what I mean if you watch the show and take his class.
Dr. Sullivan is a great prof.I had him for math 1090. Really knows his stuff, and is good at teaching it. Also gives out lots of practice and posts all answer keys online.would definitely take another course with him.
Urg, I think the most boring class I had all semester. He puts the material like we never seen it before and if we mention something he didn't talk about he's like...how do you know that? His notes are not to good. Their so disorganized. He goes off on examples in examples and don't even mention what to do in the example just puts it up their.
This guy rocks, he explains really well and it makes going to class better, especially since its math. Would recommend.
Dr Sullivan shows a large amoun of interest in his subject area and really seems to want you to do well. His final was a little brutal, but that seemed to be an accident more then anything, and he seemed kind of sorry when he realized how hard it was. I reccomend any math course with this professor as long as you have some interest in the subject.
Very good prof, really helpful and always took the time to answer people's questions
Knows his math, willing to help, but the material he tested/ taught in class was no where near the level that was on the final.. ALOT of ppl i have spoken with dropped 10+ marks on the final.. and therefore hate him :/.. proceed with caution
Ignore ratings from people who have "done" his 1090 course. These are weaker math students, who are comparing their irrelevant high school marks to university level courses. They probably didnt deserve their "90" in high school and will rate this prof bad when they are surprised to be struggling.
Top notch prof. Really good notes and the perfect amount of relevant examples. Took his time going through the material. Taught material outside the course requirement (which was optional) and allowed us to take a quiz on it a week or so before the final for bonus marks. First 100% I've gotten in university.
Sullivan is a fair prof. His lectures are as interesting as the material, and he is very good at answering questions. His exams are fair, and he is understanding of students. Overall, great prof.
Wonderful math prof, right up there with Prof. Loveless. He is the most approachable and friendly prof I have ever seen, and he's always willing to help students with their assignments. The material is pretty hard though, but he does everything in his power to make sure you get it. Definitely recommended.
Sullivan is my favorite prof at MUN. He gives really good examples and LOTS of them! His notes are extreamly detailed and he is always willing to give extra help. The course is alot of work, but if you go to class and stay caught up you will be fine. Makes me want to do more math!
Very enthusiastic, personable and approachable. Best prof I've had at MUN so far. Lots of examples, and very willing to give extra help. Fair marker.
one of the best profs i've had at mun. really enjoys what hes teaching. willing to help at anytime, responds to emails rapid fire. tests are fair. gives lots of examples and seems to really care how his students do in the course
Very good prof. Does many examples and explains them well. If you know how to do his assignments and webassign then you will get an A on his tests. Very approachable and is one of those profs that wants you to do well. I recommend him to anybody!!
Best math prof ever! His notes are very clear and he gives tonnes of examples. His assignments are a perfect study guide for midterms and final. He is very approachable, helpful, and makes an effort to get to know each student. He is also very enthusiastic and makes the course seem less dry. I hope I have Sullivan again!
Great prof. Explains everything really clearly and is genuinely concerned about his students. He gives those who are struggling plenty of opportunities to improve their marks and provides lots of helpful hints. His assignments are worth very little but REALLY prepare you for the exams and tests.
after my horrifying math 1000 teacher this guy was a saint i loved his notes, assignments and tests did well in the course would recommend him to anyone
Sullivan is a great prof. Very helpful and friendly. He seems like a genuinely nice guy, which makes him approachable. Easy-going. Also had him for 2130, and he made that brutal course as good as it could be. The only prof I have had yet who remembers my name! He doesn't grade easily, but why should any prof? He's fair and wants you to do well.
Easily among the top 5 math professers at MUN. Never hesitates to help you with the course material. The most approachable prof I've ever had.
the best prof i've had so far. my marks in his 1001 were much higher than i usually get. 90+ on everything. he always explains everything fully and makes sure to give you lots of examples so you can solve any problem thrown your way. im considering taking the 2000 course again just because he is teaching it and i know i will get a much better mark.
The best professor I have ever had the pleasure of learning from. He was extremely helpful with all questions inside and outside the classroom and could not have made the material in the course any easier to understand. His marking scheme was really good and he cares a lot about his students.
Fantastic teacher. I had him for math 1000. After previously doing a similar advanced math course in high school with a terrible teacher and not understanding a thing then. Now everything is perfectly clear. I would defiantly recommend him!
Would recommend for anyone who has to take math 1000, especially if you've never done calculus! Gives great notes and doesn't overload you with assignments
This is a hard course. However Shannon does a good job teaching it and is a helpful prof.
Teaches just like a high school teacher. He wants his students to get everything that he`s putting on the board. He gives students a week to do the assignments after being taught the material. Everything on his tests are either directly from his notes or from the assignments with different numbers. Highly recommend this prof!
Highly recommend this prof! Very nice and helpful guy. His jokes are a bit lame at times, but if you can put up with that you'll love him! Explains things very thoroughly with many examples! I'd take him for every math course if i could
I used to love Math since high school but not as I did in his class. He just made the course easier than what I thought.
Very kind and helpful professor! Examples are thorough and exactly what you should expect to see on the exam. Assignments are very helpful. Truly appears to enjoy helping students. He's also a writer - read his book!
Great prof! He learns the entire class' names, and does a great job at explaining things.
Fantastic prof! You can't get much better. His notes are awesome, he goes through plenty of questions, and doesn't assume you know everything from high school/previous math courses. Super approachable, and really wants you to succeed (assuming you do your very best and are attentive!). Just do NOT talk in his class!
Very nice prof, easy to understand. He gives AMAZING notes, very clear and lots of examples. I would recommend him to anybody taking math 1000!
Fantastic professor! Dr. Sullivan really helped me understand calculus and was always incredibly friendly when I went to his office hours or had questions after class. His notes are great and he gives a lot of examples!
Dr. Sullivan is an amazing math prof. He is very clear, very thorough in explaining, and most importantly, he really cares. His tests are very similar to the assignments, which really help you prepare for the tests. Dr. Sullivan wants you to do your best and even insists that you ask for advice on future course selections for the next semester!
One of the best profs, if not one of the best teachers I have ever had. If you have any trouble with math, get him! He explains math like a slow, clear story. You also have a lot of assignments so there is a lot of wiggle room to improve your mark. If you really enjoy math, get him too because he's a genuinely kind person!
BEST. PROF. EVER. Dr. Sullivan is so nice and extremely fair. always answers emails as soon as he can, and is always willing to help. his assignments can be tricky, but just to better prepare you for the exams.
Dr. Sullivan is my hero.
awesome prof. very clear, with great written notes. always open for question during his office hours and is very helpful.
fantastic prof! Very clear and very helpful. His tests aren't easy but if you put in the effort they are fair. I am a hardworking student however math is not my best subject. His classes helped me so much!
Dr. Sullivan is the best math prof I've had thus far. He is very interesting, he makes math fun and he makes it make sense. I don't have any natural talent in calculus, but through his notes that had step by step instructions he made it possible for me to pass. He's also very nice and helpful. Assignments and tests were short and fair.
If Sullivan is an option, and you don't take him, you're missing out on your A. His notes are the best (teaches whats tested). Extremely nice and fair. You do need to work though, but it is uni. He can mark the final a little too tough, but HE IS GREAT! Recommend!!! Just like High School! I'll take him for all 4 of my math courses in my degree!
Pretty good prof. Lectures gave a lot of examples and it was easy to pay attention. Assignments can sometimes be tricky but they help in the long run. Tests were very similar to previous years (which he posts online with answers). It's a tough course but overall Sullivan taught it fairly well.
Dr. Sullivan was a pleasure to have for my first university math course. He gave you plenty of resources to help you pass! His lectures are very engaging. Would take him again in the future!
Awesome prof, one of the best in the math department. Is very organized, gives excellent assignments and fair tests, and marks well. Genuinely cares about his students and is always willing to help if you don't understand something. I'd definitely recommend him for any math course.
To put it bluntly, if I did not have this professor for Math 1000 I would have failed the course. Overall a fantastic professor who organizes the assignments and tests in a very comprehensive way that it is not overwhelming. He also offers free tutorials which definitely helped me pass as well, highly recommended.
Hard tests and brutal assignments. Gives very good notes. I had very high expectations of him, but was not overly impressed with his attitudeego.
Awesome professor. Probably the best I've had to date. Explains concepts very clearly. Is more than willing to help if you need it. Assignments are tough and relatively time consuming, but they are great preparation for his tests, which were very fair. Great guy, great sense of humour and great prof. Highly recommend.
Best math prof. Lectures are clear and assignments are short but tough and prepare you for the tests (fair) and final. Prepare to work, but definitely an A if you do all of the assignments and go see him with any problems. Highly recommend. I had him for 1000, 1001, and hopefully 2000 this fall! Would never take another prof if he was offered!
Shannon Sullivan was amazing!! I transferred to his class within the first week of my first semester at MUN, and it was my best decision! His lectures were very clear, and you definitely need to attend them. The assignments were challenging, but tests were relatively easy. Practice as many examples as you can and there won't be any surprises!
good class. prof was very helpful
Hardest test I've ever taken, gives assignments every week plus online assignments everyday. Heavy work load and doesn't provide help if you ask him. Goes way too fast during lectures and if you blink for a second you're three pages behind in writing notes.
Very hard tests, unlike any of the past ones he had posted. Marks aren't given away at all, you really have to know your stuff. Nice fella though, and is passionate about what he does. I'd take him again.
quirky but skilled teacher. wants you to succeed. gives very good notes; you won't need anything else to do well. exams were very similar to the previous year's, which can be found on his website with other extra practice. assignments are long but good to check your understanding. final exam was straightforward for the most part.
Great prof. By far the best math professor I could have asked for. Very clear notes, easy to follow, and plenty of examples to make sure you understand the material. Grading is always fair and he prepares you well for tests and exams. If you come to class and write your notes and do what he tells you to do then you'll pass his course.
Dr. Sullivan's style is clear, and quick-paced. Weekly assignments have a few small curve balls, but are helpful towards tests and the exam. He posts materials from his past years of the course, so prepping for his tests is easy - though the tests can be packed for the amount of time.
Honestly the best Prof I've EVER had. Very nice, his notes are beyond amazing, he is very clear about the material he covers, and he has his own website filled with practice questions, review notes, and detailed answers to past assignments. His assignments/tests can be challenging, but the notes, website, and office hours should help plenty. 10/5
His notes consist of explanations and not many examples. I also found his lectures just went right over my head because he is obviously a very smart man and I think he expected us to understand his level of intellect. His assignments and tests are short but assignments are hard he is a hard grader, and goes till the very last second of class.
Dr. Sullivan is an amazing prof. Very clear in lectures and explains things thoroughly. Very good prof for your first calculus class. Weekly assignments as well as online assignments, but they help your understanding. Tests are not overly hard, as long as you do examples you'll be fine. Also has past tests and solutions on his website for practice!
Dr. Sullivan's lectures are seamless and his notes are great for they include fundamental examples and challenging examples. Would certainly recommend getting the webassign and assignments done ahead of time. Also, his online worksheets are very helpful.
Best prof ever! hes not hot tho.
Dr. Sullivan is a great prof who shows genuine concern and care for his students. This course involved three written papers and he gives you plenty of feedback on the to ensure that you so better and better as the course progresses. I would take a million more math courses if he was to teach them.
Sullivan is one of the better math profs at MUN. He cares about his students and will usually teach things in a way that will clear up confusion around certain topics. Be warned though, his weekly assignments can be quite long and beware the webassigns. Very friendly and very approachable. Would recommend.
He's probably the best math prof in the faculty. 10/10 would recommend
Bit of an odd guy, but great prof. Tries to do his best to make class interesting. Gives helpful examples, and assignments are a fair indicator of the test. Post helpful video tutorials for a practice final exam towards the end of the year. Very approachable outside of class. Attendance is not mandatory, but is very helpful.
Absolutely incredible prof. Math 1001 was a very difficult course, but Dr. Sullivan made it much more easy to work through. I would highly recommend taking his courses, and I definitely will be if I need to in the future.
Good prof, definitely recommend!! You need to go to class because he doesn't post notes online! He's really great outside of class, and easy to talk to! Genuinely cares about his students and wants you to succeed.
Dr Sullivan is an incredible Prof who gives excellent explanations, provides descriptive notes, and works through useful examples. Not only is Dr Sullivan excellent at teaching the course material, he also cares about his students and how well they are understanding the material. I would not hesitate to take another of his courses in the future.
Super nice and cares about his students ! His notes are good! However, he's more into the proofs more so then examples. And he doesn't post them, so go to class! The text book is great too, he follows his notes from it.
Professor Sullivan explains concepts so well, you probably wont need to study. He does a tonne of examples and answers a lot of questions well. A draw back is that he doesn't post notes to D2L so attendance is a must. - 2 Mid Terms - Final - 8 Assignments -
Amazing professor! Would highly recommend taking him for any course. He is great at explaining new concepts to students. Also, he spends loads of time on the important concepts and just brushes over the non-important concepts, so you are well prepared for the final. As with any Math course, attendance and practice are necessary to succeed!
Best math teacher i ever had!!! His tests are on the difficult side but his ability to twach math makes up for it.
Not understanding. He will not change your grade even if its a small amount. He wasnt very friendly during office hours, was a tough grader, often talked about random topics during lectures and didnt give you time to practice during lectures. Went way too fast. Everyone was confused, many dropped the course. Hes very smart but I dont recommend
The best prof Ive taken so far without a doubt! The course itself isnt easy in any way but Dr. Sullivan made it easier to learn than any other course Ive taken.
He is the best professor in the Math department according to my opinion. He has amazing notes but he only gives them out during lectures. The lectures are very informative and interesting, he makes you want to take Math as a major. He also explains all the concept from a very basic and understanding point of view. I would take him for every course.
Dr. Sullivan is by far the best professor I've had in MUN. He is always available for questions and can always explain in an understanding way. Notes are not posted anywhere so you need to attend class in order to pass. Would take these classes again just to have Dr. Sullivan again. Also had him for MATH 1000
good prof
He doesn't post his notes, but his lectures are very good. usually, he posts assignments and solutions from the previous semesters. recommend!
Dr. Sullivan is definitely the best choice for a course like Maths 3202. He conveyed topics in an easy manner. Not for once I felt that I am lagging behind. If you put up the required which is not that high, you will do great with him and tbh he is one of the best professor in the maths department at MUN.
Shannon writes a lot of notes (none of which are posted online), so prepare to show up to class. He also gives lots of resources for studying (old assignments, tests, scatter worksheets) which better prepares you for what he'll ask on exams. Courseload is heavy, but he does his best to teach the material and is always there to answer questions.
He's a good guy. Very smart. Doesn't post his notes so showing up to class is mandatory. He doesn't mind helping but gives plenty of assignments. Tests are very fair!! He posts great content such as previous year's tests and assignments which is a really good help. He's very friendly and approachable.
Dr. Sullivan is a great professor who is very good at teaching the material during lectures. Very professional and knowledgeable. Notes are very well done and organized. Only drawback is that he does not post notes online so attendance is mandatory.
Best math prof I've had. Great at explaining concepts and is eager to help your learning.
Nice guy, he's a bit odd but overall he is good at explaining concepts and uses great analogies. Doesn't post his notes so attendance is necessary but his assignments and exams are very similar to the examples he gives in class. I'd definitely take a class from him again!
Dr. Sullivan is a very good prof. My favorite thing about him is that he writes on the board, so you never have to worry about falling behind with the notes in class. The only negative thing I can say about him is that he doesn't post any notes online. If your someone who always comes to class this shouldn't be of any inconvenience to you.
I found the tests were very unfair because you had to get creative with what you were taught because the types of questions on the tests were not taught in class. I wrote the final exam and didn't even have enough time to read the last couple questions. He honestly expects too much from you sometimes. Would not recommend.
WILL NOT TAKE AGAIN! Very close minded and only wants you to do it his way. Will not hesitate to give you 0 on questions if you do it a different method. Gives WAY too many assignments for only 7.5% of your grade. Midterm is worth 25% and final is worth 60%!!! Yes you read that right, they are both proctored as well.
Dr. Sullivan is a solid choice for a professor in any calculus course. The notes he writes on the board are clear and he provides a lot of examples. He is also open to asking questions provided to him in class and outside of class. I would recommend him to anyone as long as they attend every class.
Shannon cares about math, students, and student success. He is good at explaining concepts and is fun and engaging to be taught by. I found the course pretty hard, but I enjoyed class with Dr. Sullivan.
Takes great pride in his lecture and has adapted very well to online teaching. You can really tell he cares about the subject.
Sullivan is by far one of my favourite profs so far. unlike the majority of professors, he genuinely cares for teaching and it shows in his videos. The class was fully online due to covid but that did not stop him from delivering very helpful videos. he is a tough grader but that is a plus bc he makes you work 4 your grade n you do learn a lot.
Dr Shannon Sullivan, is kind of a tough grader but i would consider him to be one of my favorite professors. he really teaches and explains the course materials really well.
He is one of the best math prof I have ever had. He care a lot about you and how you study I always email him if I didn't understand something he will replay in like 4 min at 1 AM lol. He give everything on time and good at explaining problems sometimes i find it hard to understand since eng, not my first leng but all of all he is so good.
Dr. Sullivan was okay, he was not at all helpful when asked for feedback. Made his correcting very subjective to how HE liked the answers written(regardless of the legality of the procedure). On many occasions where I took the utmost care to notation, he still managed to complain about something. Show every step, including the very obvious ones...
While I can agree that Professor Sullivan is a great Math professor, he is a very tough grader. It is a great course to take, you just have to do every single question and step his way. He will not hesitate to fail you.
I had Dr. Sullivan for an online semester. He seems like a nice guy but I found it very hard to follow his lectures. I was previously doing this course in high school which got caught off due to Covid. Thankfully my high school teacher left all her notes and practice up, which is what I ended up using to get through this course.
Avoid! He is a very tough grader. If the question is not done precisely how he taught itn(every single step) marks will be taken off. He has had little to no empathy for students this year with everything online. He failed to recognize that adapting to online is hard in itself for students. He makes every test/assignment as difficult as possible.
I was never good at math until I had Dr. Sullivan as my math professor. His lectures are amazing. Even in these challenging times he prepared us well. Lectures were pre recorded so you can watch them whenever . Uploads worksheets which were super helpful . Also, the assignments were mostly exam level. Gives part marks. I'd Recommend him 100%
I took this course during COVID-19 online and it was great! He posted 4 lectures a week and 1 tutorial for the assignment that was due on Fridays. His lectures were very easy to understand if you stayed on top of them. 10 assignments, homework questions, a midterm & final exam. If you study and pay attention to the lectures, you will do just fine!
I found this course to be extremely hard. The exams were very difficult and nothing like the sample exams. However, Dr. Sullivan responds to emails quickly
I had him for my first semester of university and I found him to be very good. His lectures are well organized and give lots of information important for the final exam. Assignment questions are fair and are similar to questions on tests. Overall a great and accessible prof!!
He was a very picky and difficult grader, and made my semester a lot more stressful than needed. Although I will say he is a kind man and was available for questions.
Best math teacher ever! The exams were easy if you did the practice material he had on his website. No surprising or lengthy questions at all. Quick responses to emails, very helpful in general. Very few assignments and WebAssign problems, which is only a small percentage of the total grade. His lectures were very interesting and clear. Recommend.
Dr. Sullivan is the best Calculus Prof you could ask for. I definitely recommend online classes with him. This Fall he really showed nothing can interfere with his amazing lectures. All you need to do is thoroughly practise his assignments, worksheets and examples he does in class and you will get an A for sure. Also, he replies to emails quickly!
Dr Sullivan is a great instructor. The tests and Final are worth a lot, but that's department wide Has his own website with old exams, tests, assignments and worksheets. This course requires a lot of practice just to pass. Dr Sullivan's notes are clear, have a variety of examples. Highly recommended that your u look at everything on his website
He is a really good proff, the best Math proff i had. I would highly recommend him as a proff. Makes Math so easy and Fun to learn. Gives a lot of practice questions and made it so easy to study Math online.
He is an odd, yet nice man. You can tell that he enjoys the course he teaches, but he grades excruciatingly hard. Get the answer right without his desired workings, and you could still get the majority of the question wrong.
Probably the best math prof I've had. Explains things clearly and concisely with great examples, and was also very accommodating to me when life got in the way of getting work done. Highly recommend!
Shannon is a wonderful professor and he really knows his material. However, he is not an understanding prof. In calculus in high school, I almost received a 100% average however in his first mid-term I barely managed a 60%. With that being said, his math 1001 course is much more straightforward as long as you practice!!!
One of the best professor I had in the University I love the way of teaching,
Generally pretty decent at explaining stuff verbally, however is very conservative when showing workings. This could just be a personal interpretation of mine, but he sounds rather pompous on emails sometimes too. Also enjoys taking away part marks. Still a pretty solid option if you are you are unsure about other profs available. 3.5/5
Also had him for 1000, and he's still just the best math professor ever! Lectures are very easy to understand, holds regular office hours which are also posted and responds to emails without a delay. Tests are clearly graded, and appreciates your creativity in doing problems. He's extremely well organized, perfect for online teaching.
Excellent at explaining concepts in his lectures even in a remote setting, unfortunately just a lot of information with very few evaluations!
Best Math Prof I've ever had
Lectures were decent considering they were online and provided lots of practice material. I found some concepts on practice material were not reflective on difficultly on tests and exams. Super responsive to emails, even late at night. Bit of a tough grader but not terrible.
This man is fantastic. He's so expressive and it just reads that loves what he does. Hes great at explaining tough concepts finds a way to make online classes engaging. A few questions on his test are difficult but mostly theyre similar to what you did in class. Provides optional assignments and tons of practice problems. tough ish grading. 10/10
Dr. Sullivan had 4 lectures a week and 1 live tutorial online. His course was only supposed to be 3 times a week. Lectures are very theory based and difficult to understand. In addition to rarely giving part marks on tests he also encourages students to drop the course if they do bad the first test instead of supplying any motivation to do better.
Hes a nice person but as a professor in my opinion he wasnt great. He makes the course harder than it needs to be due to his grading style. His lectures are awful because theres a lot of useless theory and hes just hard to listen to. The questions on tests were also much harder than any examples he would do.
Dr Sullivan was okay but in my opinion his teaching style wasn't very straightforward. lectures were boring and long, and he posted 4 per week when it was only supposed to be 3. thankfully my high school offered this calculus course, I'm not sure i would have managed without taking that beforehand. final was fairly hard but that's kind of expected
Good lectures considering they were remote and you can tell he's super passionate about what he teaches. Provides tons of weekly practice material (mostly optional) and is quick to respond no matter the day/time of day. Although one thing I will say is that Shannon is a painfully tough grader and won't hesitate to fail you. Still would recommended.
The final was significantly harder than the midterms and I felt underprepared. Shannon however is a really good prof but super theory heavy. He did less how-tos and more this is why we do what we do which doesn't help on the final. Overall he is readily available for questions and gave super good feedback on the midterms.
There were 3 lectures a week plus a live lecture. Shannon made his lecture over complicated I found it very difficult to understand and catch up on work. There was a web assign every week which was easy but only worth 8 percent. The 2 mid terms and finals were very long and graded hard.
Shannon is the best math prof at MUN! He puts one question from the optional assignments on the midterm. He is definitely a tough grader, but wants to see his students succeed. He posts his notes and the answer keys to the assignments. For the midterm, he not only posted the answer key after the fact but made videos explaining it step by step.
Dr. Sullivan is very lecture heavy. The lectures are generally pretty long. He is very quick to respond to any and all questions you may have. The final was very long and difficult, however this course does offer a supplementary if you fall between a grade of 45-49.
Dr. Sullivan is a very nice person. He was flexible with any extensions and was always available during office hours. I didn't like his style of teaching in his videos, I found that he wasn't as straightforward as I preferred. However, he was very quick at replying to any questions that I emailed him. His exams/midterms are quite difficult!
In order to get an A in his class, you need to practice all the papers which he had sent to the class before the exams, i.e before midterm 1, practice all the papers which he had sent before that and repeat the same in the midterm 2 and final (all papers). I followed this, and got an A+ in all the exams. He gives marks for steps.
By far the best math professor at MUN. The course material was very well explained and gives good practice examples. If you want to do well in this course practice problems are a must and Professor Sullivan loves to help students that are actively participating. I highly recommend Professor Sullivan for this course.
Course lectures were good, assignments were good, always responds to emails. I found both the midterm and the final were significantly harder than course lectures/ assignments and exams are very long. The assignments are worth barely anything and the midterm and final are very heavily weighted.
Shannon is very passionate and knowledgeable. His online lectures are extremely thorough, but also not too long. His exams are quite fair and he offers a lot of practice options. Assignments definitely prepare you as well. He replies extremely quickly to emails. I really wasn't that fond of math until I had him as a prof. Really a top tier prof.
Very knowledgable, and very easy to approach. He is a solid choice for any math course. The exams tend to be harder and lengthier than any practice you will complete, so a solid understanding is needed but that goes for any math course.
Dr. Sullivan is the best mathematics teacher I have ever had. His analogies and how he introduces each concept is easy to understand and he is great at answering questions in class. His assignments accurately reflect the course material and he provides extra problems from previous sections of the course. Tests accurately reflect course content!
Dr. Sullivan is an amazing professor, you can tell he knows his stuff and is very passionate about it. He is also really easy to get a hold of for help and wants to see people succeed, would absolutely recommend. I'm not great at math and it's my first year of calc but he makes things simpler, although he is very theory heavy
Dr. Sullivan is a great guy who cares a lot about his students and wants them to do well. However I hated his teaching style, he was a tough grader and gave a lot of work.
Being in Dr. Sullivan's class was one of the best learning experiences in my life. He is extremely knowledgeable and passionate towards mathematics and genuinely wants his students to succeed. He was very clear with expectations and his assignments/tests were not overly difficult. Truly a fantastic professor!
Professor Sullivan is an awesome prof for math 1000. While the course has heavy material alone, Sullivan made concepts clear to understand and all his evaluations were fair. He provided lots of extra practice and I recommend going to all lectures as they are fast paced and filled with information. Overall, I definitely recommend Sullivan!!!
Extremely well-spoken and very knowledgeable on material, and also very quick to respond to emails no matter what time you message him. He made the topics very easy to understand and explained things very well.
Shannon is a great professor with interesting classes but he is a difficult grader and marks little mistakes harshly. Whenever I went to his office hours with the help he always was a huge help and genuinely kind. Also such a smart guy!!!
I did calculus in high school but found Dr. Sullivan to go well in depth to each topic. Course is taught at a fast pace so you need to keep up to notes outside of class time for the assignments and webassign. Tests are very similar to work sheets he posts. Great prof.
Dr. Sullivan is a good professor. If you do the worksheets posted, the assignments and tests are pretty similar, and tests are usually fair. He emails back very quickly and helps at any time. You should attend class but if you need to miss it he has all his class notes posted.
He does tend to throw some unexpected difficult questions on tests, for example I took a math 1000 midterm last semester and was surprised with 5 multiple choice questions worth 7.5% each, all theory based rather than calculation which we were not advised about prior. Aside from this he is intelligent and explains content well.
Great Guy. Didn't like his teaching style though.
Dr. Sullivan's class is dependent a lot on coming to class. He writes everything on the board and you're expected to take it down. That being said, he is very clear and thorough, making sure everything is explained well. He has open office hours and responds to emails very quickly. His communication about assignments is amazing and efficient.
The best prof I've had at MUN.
Lectures are fun and engaging. Assignments are challenging but meant to prepare you for the Midterm. The Midterms and exams are somewhat long but very fair. Very easy to ask questions to and has a great sense of how to guide his students to success. Overall, a really good prof, and I would definite recommend him to anyone who is going to do 1001.
Awesome prof, took math 1000 and 1001 with him, greatest guy ever, you'll understand the material quickly.
Really friendly, passionate, & knowledgeable, but his teaching style was just not for me. Far too theory-based. Dr. Sullivan's tests & final will separate the weak from the best, so it is important to be on your game. While the assignments and web assigns take a lot of time, they are important to complete for both the grade and the practice.
Tonssss of study material available. Fair grader.
Super cool guy and very caring. I am not good at math but he made the subject matter manageable and I was able to understand better because of him. He has many practice sheets available so if you do those, the assignments and webassign you should be good! Exams and tests are difficult though in my opinion
Dr. Sullivan is very knowledgable and easy to access, he responds to emails quickly and makes the expectations of the course clear. His lectures are heavily theory-based but he makes the course material easy to understand. There is lots of practice material on his course website.
Shannon was a great teacher, he would answer quickly to any questions you have. If you miss a class you can find the notes online
Dr. Sullivan is a great prof. If you're confused in class, he's not afraid to break things down and make sure you understand them. There were a lot of short, online assignments and we had an assignment due most, if not every Monday. Really nice guy, taking his math 1001 class next semester.
If you want to succeed in this course attendance is very important for note-taking!!!! However, there is lots of practice posted online and Dr. Sullivan did three term test rather than 2 which was beneficial. I found his lectures to be overwhelming at first but I learned to enjoy his teaching style and Im taking his class again next semester.
Good professor very insightful lectures but final exam can be difficult.
Dr. Sullivan is a great prof, he gives plenty of opportunities to boost your grade through online homework/assignments. He teaches very theory-based but provides helpful applications in class as well. Dr. Sullivan is very approachable and is apt to help anyone who has questions in or out of class. My only quarrel is how hard the final was.
Overall I think he is a good prof, but could have been better! He definitely knows his stuff and is very open to help any student, but I found his way of teaching sometimes rushed or brief. We do only have 4 months to complete the course but I found if I hadn't done math 1000 in high school prior I would've been somewhat lost. Still a good prof!
Dr. Sullivan is an amazing prof. He is more then happy to help any student that reaches out for it, he's usually very quick to respond to emails as well as very approachable in class and during his office hours. Overall an amazing prof. I'm very much looking forward to having again for math 1001!
I personally think Dr. Sullivan is an amazing prof! Yes, his lectures can be a little on the theory side and he likes to put proofs on evaluations but practice is key to this course! His website is also super helpful if you're doing other math courses that he was taught in the past.
I really enjoyed Dr Sullivan for 1000 and 1001. He's always happy to help after lectures or email which he replies to quick. I found he does quickly go over some things but his website is very helpful when that happens. Midterms are fair and although 1000 exam was a bit much (math department issue i think) this semesters 1001 exam was pretty fair.
Great lectures, caring and very passionate about what he is teaching. Tests are fair and grading criteria is very clear. Lots of assignments and quizzes.
Dr. Sullivan is a very kind and understanding professor, who has no issue clarifying concepts in lectures and answering any questions you have , after class or in email. He provides a lot of resources on his site (ex: worksheets and lecture videos) to provide extra practice, which really helped me a lot in this course!
He is a really great prof who provided lots of resources to aid in your success in his courses. He taught on a chalk board so it was easy to keep up with his notes. His midterms were very fair the final had a couple difficult questions but overall it was fair as well. The assignments and worksheets prepare you. Great prof, take if you can.
Dr. Sullivan is the BEST! I have taken his classes for both 1000 and 1001, and both times, he has proven himself as a great prof. Plenty of examples, resources, and chances to boost your grade if needed. 1001 had two fairly easy midterms and an amazing final! Dr. Sullivan is also very helpful/kind in office hours (which I recommend attending!)
He is a good Professor in class and also his markings are fair but you might feel a bit disappointing if you meet him outside of the class. However he helps the students a lot even outside of the class.
Clear, concise, tons of practice. Lectures left little to be confused. Excellent prof
Prof. Sullivan is very approachable and helpful both in and out of class. The course is challenging but the assignments and resources like unstuckstudy ai make it manageable. Overall, a solid professor worth taking.
Shannon is a fabulous guy! His lectures are great and he breaks down difficult calculus concepts into manageable bite-sized portions. You can get a decent grade by solely attending lectures. If you want to really shine in his class though, take advantage of all of the resources posted on his website that also include answer keys.
Awesome Proffesor
Great guy! Very accessible and approachable outside of the class and he leaves you very well prepared to write assessments as there's never anything to be overly surprised by! 110% would take him for another course
He is such a sweet man, he answers emails very quickly and thoroughly. He just really cares about his students.
Really awesome prof! I'd highly recommend, I had no calculus background and went into the final with a 98! Prepare to put the work in, but I believe that comes with every course. He's very easy to contact outside of class and makes lectures very enjoyable! Teaches the course so well! Taking him again for 1001. Finals and midterms are very fair
Super great prof, very easy to access outside of the classroom and responds rapidly to emails. He provides a lot of extra practice and prepares you very well for all forms of assessment. He always ensures students are well informed and takes the extra step to show he cares and wants students to be interested in Mathematics
Really liked Dr Sullivan's class(even though he wrote on a chalkboard). Coming from someone who had previously done 3208 in highschool I found that limits was very theory heavy but I understand why. Other than that he was great. Gives you plenty of material to do well in the course, its just up to you how you use it. Tests and Final was fair.
Sullivan is an amazing prof, his midterms & final were very straight forward, he gives lots of extra practice, gives sample tests/midterms/finals, etc. Is also a very fair grader, great at explaining things and an overall nice man. 10/10 and zero complaints.
I've had Dr. Sullivan now for both 1000 and 1001, and I find his online notes difficult to understand; therefore, attendance is major. He's very enthusiastic about the course however, it is easy to get lost but he will answer any questions you have. The test structure is easy, however, the questions can be pretty tricky. Overall great prof!
Shannon is fabulous. I took him for both 1000 and 1001 and he shone like a diamond both times. Do the practice worksheets he posts online!! Sometimes he'll take questions from those and put them on your midterms and final. Only complaint is that the final is 55%, but all MUN math courses have a really heavy final so it's not specific to him.
My favourite prof by far in this uni full of weird profs. Shannon knows how to teach, entertain the class, and is always there to help. His language is so clear and ez to understand, midterms are light, for a 9 am course I always wanted to attend bcs it was that nice.
By far the best prof I've ever had the pleasure to take at MUN. So easy to get ahold of outside of class, genuinely cares about his students and made a 9 am lecture something to look forward to, following his teaching was super easy and always had a joke or two to lighten the content. So much extra practice. Can't praise him enough! Take him!
If you can take Math 1000 or 1001 with him DO IT. He explains concepts very easily. Only gave him a 4 because at times his help with assignments are very vague.
Shannon Sullivan is one of the best profs I have had at MUN. He is very pleasant and explains the material very well. He is very accessible outside of class and is very funny. Assignments and midterms are very fair and helpful for learning. I cannot say enough good things about this man. If you have to take a math course at MUN, do it with him.
You can really tell he cares about what he's teaching, great professor overall. Made every piece of material very clear and is willing to go over an example multiple times if you don't understand. Take Dr. Sullivan for every math class if you can.
Very good lectures you could tell he cared. Sometimes would go a little fast in lectures
His tests are unnecessarily difficult, he tends to put random stuff on there to mess with you. Final was fair though. He wasn't that bad, but I found him a bit rude at times and to have a bit of an ego. Definitely worse options out there so I wouldn't say don't take him, but do your research on other options if you have the opportunity.
Slept through my first test, he understood my situation and exempt it! You can tell he cares for his students and I found the tests to be very fair. He also grades very fairly.
The class is hard if you aren't a math person like me, but Shannon was a great help. Although I didn't pass the class (I was close), I would recommend him to anyone. I will definitely be retaking his class in the spring.
Great prof and 100% would recommend him for anyone. He cares so much about his students and is more than happy to stop at any time and explain concepts that are misunderstood. Easily accessible outside of class for any questions.
Very nice prof, he is very passion about his teaching. tests were fair, there were easy parts and hard parts, but he gave lots part mark for your process.
Dr. Sullivan is amazing! Very easy to understand and posts lots of practice materials! The tests are fair with no surprises but will test your overall knowledge and not just your ability to do questions. Notes are posted but you get way more out of the lectures and some things are mentioned in class and not in the notes.
