Blunt, honest somewhat scattered but she is a good and helpful teacher
Opinionated, but fun. very little homework. classes keep you interested
She tells it like it is, which is awesome. Very helpful and always constructive, she taught me a great deal about giving an effective speech.
Join the debate team.
If you want to learn speech at MHCC this is the instructor you want to take class with Shannon is fun and engaging in class and really forces you to grow.
Eh.. Moderate amount of writing to do.. 1-2 page paper a week plus 5-7 page midterm and a 8-10 page final. The class is easy enough albeit boring at some points. Sandra gets carried away sometimes and her personallity can be annoying but her teaching abilities are adequate.
She is the best...
This is the best teacher you will have for identifying the most important aspects of speech, and how they apply to everyday life. She is one of my favorites. Expects you to have the work done. Makes speech interesting, not very difficult.
She great with details and that helps, one of the Best.
She's an ok teacher... if you do whatever she say's you'll be fine
This professor is the hardest grader at Mt. Hood
This teacher sucks!! I didn't like her... she grades too hard... she's fun until it gets to grading... do all the extra credit you can because she will really mark you down on the final speech.. Also, when she's not in the mood, you're out of luck! especially if its your speech day!!
She is horrible!!! The worst teacher I have ever had!!! I am a straight A student and I got a C in her class. She is very unclear about what she wants in her assignments and docks you for her mistakes. Very picky and only likes what you have to say as long as it matches her views. Don't take her... Run Forrest... Run!!!!
I understand why students like Shannon - her style is fun and outgoing and a little bit silly, but I personally felt like she was teaching a class to middle-schoolers. She tells stories that are barely believable and acts everything out in a manner that irritated me. But if you don't need an instructor that makes you think too much, she's great.
Worst teacher ever! Shannon is extremely opinionated and if you disagree with her watch out! She grades speeches based on complete bias. Don't bother asking for help because she is useless outside or inside of class. Avoid her like the plague
Shannon was great when I took her SP111 class. I don't see why her being opinionated is a reason to not take her, this is America after all. I had a DREADFUL fear of doing speeches in front of groups before this class. She was very helpful in getting me to fit a 10 minute speech on a small 3x5 card and having it pretty memorized. WORTH TAKING!!!
Speech/debate coach for MHCC. Nice person, Tough class, Hard grader, organized, Lectures with Power Points, Much info on portal. You perform 3-speeches in class, additionally attend 1-live speech & do analysis paper & 1-non-live speech & do analysis paper. Used text fairly little, flexible about edition of text used. Do all extra credit you can.
Shannon is a great teacher! she IS very helpful! i got an A+ in her class, all you have to do is show up to class and do the speeches. she explains exactly what she wants. She helped me review my speech 5 times until it was good, i got 150/150 on that speech thanks to her help. class is a challenging but she will help you when you ask her.
She says it how it is, but its very useful to you as a student. She expects a lot in your speeches and research, but you will come out with a feeling of accomplishment. I never thought I would enjoy a public speaking class, but I loved it. She's a great teacher.
Shannon coaches the award-winning MHCC debate team, so she really knows her stuff. She will jump on weak arguments and logical fallacies. If you listen to her critiques, you will get better with speeches. As someone with a fear of public speaking, her class is a huge help; no matter what, you'll need to speak up in the real world after all.
She is a hard teacher! She really wants you take something out of the class. I did not like her at first, but she is rather a good teacher. She loves to give examples and stories, I loved that the most!
Not an overly hard class, but it is time consuming. She takes her class seriously and forces you to actually invest in the class to get an A. As an engineer it was more work than I would have liked, but it wasn't too bad.
Straight to the point. Doesn't mess around. If you do what your told you get a decent grade. She takes speech very seriously and you will probably too if you make it through the class. Not the easiest class, but without question one of the most important. If you really want something out of a speech class have to take shannon.
Shark is awesome . She is a fair teacher and provides more than enough resources to get a great grade I would recomend her to anybody. hard but great teacher
She never talks about due dates in class, u r suppose to remember. she is very un friendly. i am very up set about taking her as an instructor. dont recommend her. she is a hard teacher. also misses class a LOT! which makes it a ton harder when u dont even know what she wants.
I hate speech class, but with the help of Shannon I was able to gain skills. She helps and answers emails all the time. she is all portal, we are middle school students who need to be reminded to bring lunch to school everyday. She posts due dates on the portal and you must keep up with it. text book rarely used. powerpoint lectures... take her
Shannon is a teacher who expects a lot from her students. If you want to do well in her class, PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT SHE SAYS!! All readings she mentions are required otherwise there are pop quizes which suck. If you put an effort in this class, you will do fine. Not an easy A kind of class.
Very hard class, good teacher though, she is a debate coach and knows her stuff. More work then other speech classes but work assigned really helps to strengthen your skill set. She sends reminders all the time and offers extra credit. Uses the portal more then any other instructor I've had. This is NOT an easy A! It is well designed.
Took this in the summer and was very difficult. She is very opinionated and stubborn but also friendly and understanding. Has high expectations often had to rewrite speeches multiple times but I believe she is fair with her high expectations of people.
got d on first speech, showed that i couldnt careless aboutthe class. she called me out after class.said i dont want you waste my time and studnts time if your not willing to make it look like you care. i got mad but yet took that advice cuz didnt want to fail. earned a's on all speaches after that. she thout me a good lesson, great teacher honest.
Got As on assignmentsspeeches. Shannon expects the best, but is a fair. Friendly, but you must meet her halfway (willing to offer advice and answer any question)! Attendance will be the only way to know what she wants. She does express her opinions, so don't let it ruin a good class for you. This class is worth your time! No textbook, too ")
Shannon comes off very intimidating but she's actually really nice & understanding 1-1. If you can meet her halfway, you'll pass just fine. She uses the portal A TON, so no textbook required. There's 3 speeches, & they are mandatory you'll get a 0 if you don't do all 3 of them. If you do poorly on them, she offers A TON of extra credit.
Amazing teacher. She's really there whenever you need her. She responds to emails at the speed of light and is extremely considerate of personal situations that may cause you to need an extension so long as you talk to her before hand.
Well, this isn't the easiest class, you REALLY have to work for the A. Shannon wants to see you improve from your first speech (she cuts you slack on the first one) BUT if you don't do exactly everything she told you, good luck! (F). Honestly, people would ask questions and she would make you feel like your stupid. So try and open up to her..
Very hard class. She definitely knows her stuff. I trusted her to give me good feedback so that I could progress, which she did most of the time. Although, she is not easy to confront. She often makes you feel stupid with any question you ask. She also misses class a lot (due to debate) and leaves it up to you to figure out your assignment.
Unclear about assignments, absent a lot.
Uses class time to preach about one sided political views and expects you to pick up the slack on my portal.
She expects a lot out of you which I respect, but there are three reasons I regret taking her. 1. She will not tell you your grade 2. locked students out of the classroom for being late 3. NO LATE WORK handed her a printed copy at 10, would not take it because it was due online. not allowed to email it because it would be late. received a zero
Shannon definitely knows her stuff. Do not take her if you are not willing to put in the work. I'm a straight A student, and I would say this was one of the A's I had to work for the most! Class is VERY political. Although I agree with almost all of her political views, I do think a person with opposing views would get graded much tougher!
Shannon is a great teacher. She is someone who will help you become a better speaker. She is someone who offers lots of extra credit and I would highly recommend taking advantage of all of it. She is someone who will make you better than you are right now. You have to go to every class and work hard, but if you do then you will earn an A from her.
Shannon has helped me get over my worries of public speaking and making me laugh while doing so. Definitely helps to come to class!
She is very smart when it comes to speeches but not much else. She spends class time talking about far left conspiracy theories, which isn't very appropriate according to me at least. If she simply left politics out of class I would have no problem taking her again but taking this into consideration I would rather get waterboarded.
She's a good teacher and she knows her subject. However, she tends to go on random political rants and topics. She's very open on politics and will criticize anything wrong in society or the government. They tend to be tiring even if it is relevant to the topic. If you don't care about her rants, then she's a good teacher.
By far one of the worst professors I have ever taken. Spends most classes ranting about insane leftist political views and doesn't let anybody argue with them without publicly shaming you. Your entire grade is based on 3 speeches and she will NOT teach you what to do. Randomly selected topic for speeches. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!
Really a horrible instructor because she takes up an hour and thirty minutes to bash the president and talks a bout the debate team. Doesn't help you improve on areas for public speaking at all. This instructor says don't read of your notes even though she does read off her notes.
Has ok tips and tricks, but too politically motivated. Seriously, this class should be about learning how to create speeches and perform in front of an audience. Not everything has to relate to Donald Trump. Yes, she does talk about him a lot even if he's not relevant to our topic. She basically wants us to stand up to the government.
2 of the 3 speeches deal heavily with politics, so you got the short end of the stick to begin with. Most if not all speech examples will follow up with a current government issue, followed by Trump. Oh ya, make sure you keep all your graded papers and e-mails, because you'll have to add them up and figure out your grade on your own at the end.
She missed a lot of classes and most times we had subs. She made some assignments quite unclear, and wouldnt let the sub know what she was looking for either. When I emailed her, she never responded. Most of the class is her reading off of her presentations and giving political opinions but never actually teaching how to write a good speech.
Shannon was more than just strict. In all of my years of college, I was REQUIRED to take a SP111 class. Keep in mind this is an INTRODUCTION to public speaking class. She was way too critical of speeches and not fair with grading them. The only reason she doesn't receive a flat 0/5 is because of all of the information she uploads. Don't recommend.
She is literally the worst professor and throughout the term she just made my blood boil. You have to suck up to her if you want to pass and forget having your own thoughts. Shell think it for you cause she dont respect other peoples ideas. Wouldnt recommend, take anyone but her. She is a pain to look at and a pain to deal with.
I took this class only because I was required to, and she treated it as though it was a 400 level speech and debate class. Not only was her grading unclear, but she only gave feedback once on our first speech, the rest of the class was group work and peer reviews, when we didn't even know what we were doing. Also, so many emails and announcements.
Grading was based on political views, not the quality of the speeches given. This was an introductory speech class yet she barely passed me, after quite frankly, scolding me in front of the class for having opposing views. I did not learn anything from her because she did not teach. I do not know how she is qualified to be a teacher.
Do not take this class if you are taking any others, it seems like she forgot I have other responsibilities too. I had to fail other classes in order to even get a decent grade in this class. I wouldn't take this again as she grades harshly on everything and there are very few things to get graded on.
ONE OF THE WORST. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASSES.
Terrible professor. Everything was about her pushing her political views and agenda. If you want to get a good grade, get ready to conform your speeches to her political views. Too much work, really hard to keep up with especially if you have other classes. Also she is a really harsh grader and is not understanding at all. Would not recommend.
We had 3 main speeches. She only provided feedback for the first and easiest one, we had to peer review the other two (which sucked). She is very strict on her grading and procedures, if you expecting an introductionary type course this isnt it. She isnt good at explaining. Lots on unnecessary homework and quizzes. Youll pass if you work hard...
First off, everything negative you have read is true. The course organization is built to fail you if you don't comb through all of blackboard and rewrite your own due date schedule, in order. If you don't follow her written req's to the dotted 'i' she 0's your paper. Outdated ideas on public speaking enforced by grades. Wish I'd never paid.
Worse class I've ever taken. Do not take this class. Although you might want to learn this still isn't the class. I'm a good motivated student, yet this class sucks the life out of you. A lot of unreasonable work especially if you are a full time student. This class occupies more time than all my other classes in total. Do not recommend.
She is very passive-aggressive when it comes to her weekly videos and feedback. We were also assigned a long one-day assignment in which we had to watch and give detailed, specific feedback to three other students' speeches ON VETERAN'S DAY. Very unfortunate that this is only an "introduction course". I didn't learn anything at all in this class.
Horrendous, DO NOT TAKE!!! I'm still finishing up my term and am regretting ever taking this class. The Professor does not care about you or your issues. She does not give good feedback or any at all on most assignments. Her instructions are unclear and dates are messed up, some are from months ago. I've learned nothing in this class. DO NOT TAKE!
There is no room in this class for the professor to manage making sure you get the best grade you can. There is no room for trying again or getting extra time when something goes wrong in a students life. I felt stressed in this class, which is like most students in college courses, but this stress was over more than just getting in assignments.
Unprofessional. Unclear on quiz material. Marks down to nearly 0 if you do not do the exact formatting she requests.
After 3 years at this school, I have never thoroughly disliked a professor worse than Shannon. Her syllabus is rude which sets the tone for the entire class. her lectures are terrible, and her grading scale is impressively harsh. I happily dropped this class and didn't care I lost my paid tuition. PLEASE avoid her.
yes definitely,she is unnecessarily rude.
I would rather to do just about anything else on this planet before I would even at the slightest consider taking this WOMAN'S class ever again. This teacher honestly feels like she could be the final boss that some 5 year old wrote for his shool's comic strip piece contest. It's honestly laughable how bad this teacher is.
Unclear instructions for finals, I was so confused and she did not communicate.
She was unnecessary rude especially when it came to finals, terrible at explaining things especially what she wanted me to fix, and said one thing but didn't do it ( two faced)!!!
She was sooo rude, she gave really unclear instructions and insulted me when I misread her instructions because she misspelled on the assignment. She would accuse me of not reading through the work, when I would stay up and always do my best. This class was really stressful and I would not recommend her at all, actually avoid her if possible.
Hands down the worst teacher I have ever had in my whole life. Taught an intro class like It was life or death. Consistently made me want to drop out just because of this one class. DO NOT EVER TAKE A CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR YOU WILL REGRET IT.
Genuinely I can not expressed the dislike I have for this teacher. She was super passive aggressive in her feedbacks and deducted points for the smallest things. The amount of emails and texts I got from this woman was so much I couldn't believe how much emails I had from just her. I would never ever take a class from her again.
I can respect her knowledge about public speaking, she was easy to get a hold of and I can tell she put a lot of time into the course material. However, public speaking isn't an easy thing to do and she does not create a safe and friendly environment required to put yourself out there and receive criticism. Almost felt like whiplash. Not my tempo!
The only thing I learned in this class was to never take this professor again!
I made an account to rate this lady a 1. Super unprofessional, a super tough grader, and AWFUL feedback. Instead of telling me what I'd done wrong, she insulted me, then told me I "Better do the extra credit.". I would rather DIE than her class again. Also, in a speech, she didn't point out the flaws in the outline but knocked points on the final.
Literally the WORST instructor I've ever had! I advise you not to take this class if you're a full-time student, especially if you also have a full-time job. She makes this class sooo unnecessarily difficult. Horrendous!
3 speeches in total but preparing for them was the worst, she has so many requirement's and if you don't follow them you will loose points, even for a tiny mistake. I suggest take a different professor!
Shannon's whole course is underpinned by a lack of trust in her students to do the right thing. Her lesson pages with multiple CAPITALIZATIONS and different colored highlights made my eyes glaze over every week I had to read them. There's a way to make students put full effort in, and tutting your lips and shaking your head is not one of them.
Please do not take ANY class from this teacher! She will destroy any confidence you have in public speaking. She will say one thing and then switch up, she is extremely passive aggressive, and a ridiculously tough grader! Someone said that she makes this ENTRY LEVEL class feel like life or death, and I could not agree more.
She was out for health reasons numerous days but reprimanded students (and gave 0's) for work being turned in even 5 minutes late. Very contradicting and RUDE.
Her intro video says, "If you need help, don't hesitate to ask!" But whenever I asked her a question, she scolded me and then messaged the class, "Read the instructions before you ask me questions!" yet often forgot to upload instructions. She's passive aggressive and ridicules students rather than helping them. I feel sorry for her pet Chihuahuas.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!!! She seems friendly and says to ask her questions but when you do you get scolded. Many tests were on resources "given" but some of the questions is literally impossible to find and was never talked about. She gives you no time to do some assignments and often your grade is dependant on other people.
Very aggressive professor. Quick to grade assignments and strict about deadlines and how an assignment should be done. Scolds you for asking for help and will intimidate you if you repeatedly turn assignments in late. She puts the least work into the lessons. Avoid this professor at all costs if you have an actual life/want to protect your sanity!
For a communications professor, it's CRAZY how awful of a communicator she is. Every week she would give directions and tell you to reference a document if you had questions and when the document gave contradicting information, she would get mad at you for asking for clarification. Avoid this teacher at all costs for your own sanity
Kind and also no nonsense. There are A LOT of details to this class and some weeks are fast paced but that isn't hidden. She gives reminders often that "details matter." If you are looking for an easy class, this is not it. If you are willing to give your best effort and learn what you can, you'll be better for it and that's what she is going for.
She is SUCH A SLOW GRADER...yet she doesn't allow any late work under any circumstances for her student. So many times she said she would have something graded by a certain date, and then she would push that date back over and over again, up to 3 weeks sometimes. She would also go on vacation while behind on grading.
Every negative review Shannon has is accurate. The work load is not that heavy but she compensates by being EXTREMELY nitpicky despite having unclear instructions. Gives 0's for arbitrary reasons that were not mentioned anywhere. Extremely rude, condescending, publicly belittles students, horrible communicator. Worst teacher I've EVER had.
Don't take this class teacher pushes dates ahead and back whenever she feels like. There was an assignment due on Tuesday, and she pushed it up to Monday and didn't email I submitted it the next day and she said I don't grade late work and gave me a zero. very rude and nitpicks everything. I could say a lot more but word limit
Relationships are complicated, but she contributed to so much stress, utter exhaustion & insanity that my relationship with my fiance ended. She turned me into someone I barely recognize & 7 years together is now over. BEWARE! Every single review here is true, except the only glowing review where that "person" got an A+. Shannon, we know it's you.
I have so many problems with this professor, but the main two are as follows: 1. Her instructions are always incredibly vague and unhelpful. 2. She grades very harshly based on criteria that she seemingly makes up on a whim. And rude to boot.
She sucks the enjoyment out of ever wanting to speak. Her assignments are unorganized and difficult to navigate. Even though its top to bottom. She makes you download Remind yet her Reminders are vague and doesn't help you at all. When you ask about an assignment, she seems passive aggressive about helping.
Her class has too much unnecessary homework and incomplete feedback. She leaves passive-aggressive comments and often says “Off the grid until Monday” midweek. The workload is heavier than my other two classes combined. Very time-consuming. I recommend avoiding her class.
Would never recommend this professor, extremely difficult and rude and unprofessional, barely passed but learned absolutely nothing from this, find a different professor and you'll be in a better position for yourself
Heavy workload, and doesn't even takes late work. It's does not feel like a four credit class at all. She would say things very passive aggressive. And not try to understand you at all. Don't take her please.
all I can say do not take her
The professor is often unavailable and difficult to communicate with, even though the required app. Expectations are unclear and feel unrealistic at times, making the class feel harder than necessary. I would not take this course again and recommend talking to your advisor about communication class options.
Everything is true do not consider her. Heavy work load for a 4 credit online class that feels unfair when she accepts no late work and if you need help she will be gone and take too long to respond or leave a snarky response. Work is unclear and hard to follow and when she finally grades she leaves a bad score off unknown rules. Worst teacher ever
Just I wouldn't take her again.
She's always been very passive-aggressive with her comments. Her scheduling is on her own timing, no matter the cause. She will be "off the grid" 90% of the time. She is a tough grader and does not accept late work, but she grades all your assignments two weeks later. I do not recommend her. I wanna cry anytime I have to do work for this class.
This class is a lot of work, she gives really incomplete and unclear feedback. She doesn't try to understand you in the slightest, and her standards are very high. This class is supposed to be an introduction to public speaking, but she asks for a lot coming from a COMM111 class.
Shannon gives an unreasonable amount of busy work. That, in truth, didn't help with any projects. I don't think she even knows what she's looking for when describing important projects. She gave an example for our 3 minute speech and went on for over 6 minutes, not making any "eye contact" with the camera. She couldn't even follow her own rules.
Her assignments can be difficult to navigate, as the instructions are often vague and not very helpful. When seeking clarification, she is most often unavailable or responds in a way that feels passive-aggressive. She is also a very tough grader and is very nitpicky about things. Overall, the class was very stressful and overwhelming.
She's the worst teacher I've ever had in my entire life !!!
Terrible instructor. Highly recommend avoiding her, grading is very subjective and not clear. Instructions seem to change constantly and information is almost always outdated along with due dates. I spent way too much time on this course for 4 credits.
