the teacher is not a very nice man, i went to ask for help on homework and he laughed at me. the tests are extremely hard and the grading is very rigid with no leniancy. he is here only for the job and doesnt care to help the students.
Prof Yang was excellent, although his English needs a little more clarity. The tests were fairly easy if you take the time to do the homework problems, there is a nice curve, and a 94 counts as an A+. He's always available for questions and knows his chemistry. All you have to do is show up and follow the lectures to do well.
Yang was a great teacher and very understanding. He always tokk time after class to explain anything that wasnt understood in greater detail.
His course (chem 122) is 10 times the work of the previous semesters work with a different instructor. you will spend $200+ for the book & misc crap. talks fast w/accent. does not explain concepts. in lecture he tells you to read the book to understand the concepts (thought thats what lecture was for?) all this and 100+ homework problems a week!
Worst Professor ever. He doesn't make any sense. Give the hardest test and does curve the the test at all. I feel like i am teaching everything to by myself. He doesn't care at all about his students. No time for his student. I wouldn't recommend take someone else but don't take him!
Yang is absolutely the worst prof I've had in college. He is utterly incomprehensible, and frequently skips important information in the lecture, or leaves practice problems unfinished, with the assumption that we already know the concepts he never taught us.
He didn't put any effort into teaching the class at all. He went over slides that he got from the textbook, skipped important ones, and basically provided a less-concise overview of the textbook. His class taught me to really resent doing chemistry and not much else.
This man is a terrible teacher, he frequently failed to post review sheets etc. that he said he would. He would consistently fail to inform us of due dates which were inconsistent with our syllabus. A student asked him an important question to which he replied "you figure it out"
Dr. Yang is absolutely the worst teacher I've ever had. I consistently get A's on the homework and online quizzes because I have to teach myself at home, and then I fail all the exams because he either promises to give a practice exam and then changes his mind or he tells us to "read the book" and then tests us over things that he never went over.
out of all the proffesors in college that i have had he is by far the worst, his method of teaching is horrible and he is not clear in his lectures and he flys through his slides and never clarifies students question his response to everything is "read the book folks its self explanatory" i would not recommend this professor to anyone!
This is the worst instructor i have ever had in all of my academic life! he twitches during lecture, he also asks if its true or correct after every sentence. He doesn't explain material fully, advises students to take notes on power point presentations that are provided, he is also very rude and impatient, thinks students should know material.
He was a very dedicated teacher. Really loves what he teaches. He really wants his students to do well and really cares.
He is the best ever professor I have ever had. I do not understand all the bashing here. Dr. Yang is a great person and he is extremely knowledgable. But you did not do your homework or reading and ask stupid questions, that would be your fault.
Professor Yang is very knowledgeable about chemistry. He should stick to research though, and not teaching. He has no tact in the classroom and zero people skills. If you have a question you might as well google it or ask you TA in lab because he will laugh you out of his office. DO not count on him to teach. Get a tutor.
Worst teacher I have ever had. I basically am teaching the material to myself. His lectures are not clear when he explains the material and he expects us to know the material before we even discuss it. My recommendation? Take this class with someone else.
The best professor I have ever had! I learned a lot in his class.
His teaching is so interactive and helpful I have fallen love into chemistry because of him!
I will take whatever classes he teaches. I took 121 and now 122 with him. He is simply the greatest teacher in chemistry. UNM should hire more professors like him. I hope I will get a good grade 4 my final.
I know I am not passing this course but I will take it again with Prof. Yang next semester. I have made much progress with your help. I really like the way you explain things and interact with us. Thanks a lot.
I was warned that Gen Chem II would be extremely difficult but it turned out really well for me. I got an A+. dr. yang knows how to make it easy for us + he is so knowledgeable + cares about us so much!
Prof. Yang is the best educator who cares so much about us. He is the best, hands down.
He is the best, period.
Dr. Yang is excellent teacher, his chemistry course is just the best.
Though this course is not difficult, this professor is far less than excellent. He is rude, embarrassing students who lodge errant guesses to his questions. He is an all-around hater, seemingly choosing random days to be confrontational to random students who are acting harmlessly. Lectures with thick accent, makes mistakes during class frequently
Do not take this course with this teacher. It was my worst decision ever. He made me dislike this field. I used to love chemistry until now. His lectures are the worst. An online version is much better than taking this class with him. Find another instructor if you could.
This course is not difficult if you take the time to study the material. However, Shaorong did not make the course any easier. He is rude. He works on problems directly from the book which the book clearly explains what to do. In fact, I would have never attended if it weren't for clicker points. I did receive an A but not with his guidance.
Very great instructor, loved his class and how he teaches. He is a fair grader, with that being said, you need to learn the materials. Like what he always say, he can't help you if "you don't know what you don't know".
So, this is my second time taking this course, and my second time with Dr. Yang. He's not the easiest to pass, but I've learned so much this second time around, especially by actually reading and coming to lecture prepared. My initial hatred of chem has changed thanks to Dr. Yang and his interest in his students' learning.
Prior to this class, I was stoked about chemistry! I love to learn and, in Gen. Chem. 1, I learned so much and built a ton of confidence. However, this all changed this semester because of Yang. Although he is a teacher, he seldom actually teaches in class; instead, we go over clicker questions. You cannot teach yourself chemistry from at textbook!
Don't take his general chemistry class , his way of teaching is very confusing. His lecture is super fast , and even thought he is not finish the lecture , the material is still on the exam. lastly he is very late on answering email.
I took this professor for my chem lab and I thought he was extremely helpful. His demos were good and well discussed before we entered the lab. He also clarified the different concepts with notes before we performed our lab for the day. I strongly suggest taking him for intro lab.
Dr. Yang is a great instructor. He made me work hard and I learned a lot in his class. If you want to pass this course without serious work, then don't take it with Dr. Yang.
Professor Yang is confusing. He genuinely loves chemistry, but if chemistry doesn't come naturally to you find another professor. He often gets distracted while lecturing and says things like: "It's calculus! It's easy! Yes? Moving on!" Don't take a class with him if you're not prepared to do a lot of learning on your own.
Professor Yang teaches concepts that seem extremely easy, but once it comes to the exam, he introduces something that you've never seen before. I have studied over 45 hours for an exam and still received 77. Mainly because he's a hard grader and he doesn't teach very well... at all.
Worst professor. Derogatory to students. Not helpful when questions are asked. Extremely ambiguous when telling you what will be on tests. Tests are tough. Does not like to be asked questions. Only reason to go to class is for clicker score. You'll learn most by simply reading. His lectures are on a projector on a scribble pad and they're confusing
Prof. Yang in a nutshell: There are 5 correct ways to do this problem, but only 1 right correct way. Alright? Okay. Moving on then.
Professor Yang expects you to learn by reading, and then taking a quiz the night before you come to class (a good idea), but the book is near impossible to learn from. He often misquotes things during the lectures (didn't seem to be because of his English), which will confuse you unless you already know the topic really well. Probably getting a B.
Sharong is a horrible instructor. When you ask for help he says "It's pretty clear" and he does not answer questions. He is rude and disrespectful. I would never take a class from this instructor again.
Ive never hated a professor quite like him!! Yang is extremely rude and unwilling to help. You cant read his lecture notes and he says that everything is "easy, common sense, ok moving on". The chemistry department made a horrible mistake letting him become a professor!
Such a difficult professor to understand, and he moves along so quickly between examples.
At the beginning of the semester, I would've agreed with the bad ratings. However, I soon realized that Chem is just tough- not Yang. It's not an easy class. I got an F on the first exam, but finished the class with an A. Yang is very enthusiastic and willing to help if you're willing to ask questions. You get out what you put in.
Prof. Yang is a great teacher, tries hard to make the hard materials interesting. The tests were not easy but the questions were excellent. You can't expect an easy pass in his class, but will gain a lot from it if you put time and effort in as he requires.
I was horrified about chemistry before I took, Dr. Yang's class gave me confidence. I am able to do a good job as long as I collect my time in to work on the course work! Thank you Dr. Yang for leading me to the achievement and confidence through your teaching!
You must come to class ready to focus, because it is usually hard to understand what he is saying unless you are really engaged. Reading before class is essential. Yang is a very intelligent professor who is willing to help those who seek it. To pass this class you need to be a hard worker.
Best teacher I've ever had. I went through a strict training from taking his class. Besides the knowledge, Dr. Yang's class cultivated me a good study habit, which helped me succeed in other classes.
Worst professor I've had in all years of college. His tests are Very tough, get ready to study 10+ hours a week. I learned all the material from the textbook as his lectures are very disorganized. His lectures consist of scribbling incoherently on paper. Tells students "Why are you asking this?" or "You need to read the textbook". Won't return emai
I highly recommend taking Gen Chem with another professor. Yang can be very rude in class when answering questions. He takes Gen Chem and make its twice as hard as it should be. I'm a straight A student, never failed a test, and I bombed his first test. I had to put in 3-4 times more studying than friends taking chemistry with other prof. at UNM.
Will not postpone exams if a lecture is missed because of snow day or other reasons, instead, he'll just skip that lecture. Not that it matters though, because his lectures are incomprehensible. Do not take this professor if you can help it.
Chem 2 with Shaorong was one of the least enjoyable experiences of my life. He is rude & unhelpful--mocking students when they come to him for help. His tests are challenging and in my experience he failed to give out the proper scantrons for a test to some students and after realizing this, he passed out new ones but didn't allow them extra time.
Cons: -Lectures consist of him scribbling incoherently on a piece of paper and talking too fast -Doesn't answer emails -Rude when asked questions in class and in office hours Pros: -His class will teach you good study habits
If you don't have any chem background previous to college, I wouldn't take him. He is not terribly clear, and he does scribble out things in his notes. I happened to follow him relatively well, but that's just me. I also enjoyed how he would keep the lectures alive, since he is a pretty zany person, but again, that's just me.
I took Gen. Chem 2 with him & I almost never understood what was going on in lectures & I been taking chemistry since high school. To pass the class with a solid C you need to have an average score of 50% on all your exams & a 100% on all your other work. He does not give extra credit, but he does curve at the end of the semester.
This is hands down the hardest "intro" to anything class I have ever taken. Maybe because it's summer and it's accelerated, but you have to really put in a ton of work to get the grade you need. ALEKS is hell, be ready to endure hours of frustration.
If you don't read the assigned reading you won't understand anything in the lectures. His lectures consist of him incoherently scribbling out the answers to in class exercises. He explains his work by saying "it's just math." He forgets to show answers. The tests are really difficult and few people in the class finish them in time. Horrible class!
hes an awful teacher simply because he does not teach. He relys on the text book and aleks to teach you , and he simply just goes over examples of problems he think is helpful.. when you can barely read his writing and understand his explainations, as he thinks that chemistry is soo easy and you should just understand it
Yang clearly loves teaching Chem. and you can tell from how excited he gets in lectures but that doesn't help us students in the slightest. When he'd get too exited it was even harder to understand him and he lectures extremely fast. He's willing to help, but he's very unsuccessful in doing so. If you aren't already familiar with Chem. STAY AWAY!
Dr. Yang is a great professor. He has solid background in chemistry, I gained a lot from his class. You have to be willing to learn, to do the work to pass the course. The homework is fun if you really get into it. Simply because learning chemistry from a good professor is fun and rewarding.
This man is horrible. He can't teach for nothing, maybe he should have gotten a crash course on how to teach because its jumbled up. He is not clear at all!
If you hate yourself, take his class.
He knows his material but is terrible about relaying it to students. It was almost intimidating to ask for help because he would speak so loud it felt like he was yelling out how wrong your work is. While doing experiments, he never got down to help us until 3/4 through the semester. Unless Chemistry is your BEST subject, I DO NOT recommend taking.
One of the worst classes I've taken at UNM. It was over the summer so we went over the material twice as fast. He did not explain well, or even go through a full example. He knows the material but does not know how to relay it to students at all. If you don't read the textbook word for word don't expect to pass.
This was the first class at UNM that I barely passed. Even with attending class every day, getting 100% on ALEKS, he was impossible to understand and follow in lecture. He made the material much harder than it needed to be, gave horrible practice problems and never explained them. Overall he has a lot of enthusiasm with poor application.
This is one of the several classes that I learned real stuff that will be used in my career and life. I appreciate Dr. Yang for how he taught this course, it is hard and requires hard work, but I gained a lot from it.
If you can take a chemistry class with any other teacher I would suggest it. He knows what he's talking about but doesn't know how to teach it. If you don't read the book and get outside help you won't do well on the tests. The ALEKS that you do is 3x more than you would do an any other class. Take another teacher!!
Professor Yang is one of the worst chemistry teachers Ive ever had. His notes are unintelligible, he goes through material way too fast, is very unclear about his expectations for students and makes it impossible for students to keep up with him. He expects students to turn in assignments WEEKS before they've studied the material! Dont take him!!!!
The entire class is self-taught. In lectures he only reviews the packet of homework. He never teaches the concepts and whatever he puts up on the board, you can't understand because his handwriting is terrible. Whatever he speaks, you can't understand because of his accent and enthusiasm. If GPA is important to you, don't take his class.
Prof. Yang is the best teacher I have ever met in my two years of college life so far. He is so knowledgeable, enthusiastic and ready to help any time you need it. More importantly, I have learned so much with him despite of the fact that I hated chemistry before this class. Prof. Yang made this tough course look so easy for me. Many thanks!
He's a good person but not a good teacher. Lectures are hard to follow because he either moves too fast or just scribbles important information. He also never solves a problem so it's hard to know if you did it right, and skips reviewing questions that he says "are too easy". Avoid taking Chemistry with him, it is already a tough class!
One of the absolute worst professors I have had. I would not suggest taking this class. You will have to work EXTREMELY hard to get a good grade. If you have a job or a family you will work hard to pass. His accent is extremely hard to understand and his past exams/review are nothing like the actual exams.
Worst instructor I've ever had. Very hard to understand. Teaches subject wrong then goes back and says "sorry that's wrong forget that". During problems he'll say "I'm to lazy to finish, you should know how to do this". His reviews don't go over anything that will be in the tests. Aleks homework goes over stuff you never use in class. Waste of time
Yang is the worst professor at UNM. I stopped going to his lecture and went to another professors instead just because of how terrible of a teacher he is. His accent is incredibly hard to understand and he never actually explains how to do any of the problems. Avoid his class at all costs.
Very enthusiastic about the subject but the more excited he gets the less you can understand. He is a perfect example of a genius in the subject but unable to teach anything about it coherently. Assigns more hw and it's due sooner than the other chem121 classes. If you already know everything about the subject then this is the professor you want.
His way of teaching isn't very conducive to learning. You're basically going to have to teach yourself this class.
Worst professor I've had. He spends lots of time of the introductory concepts but glances over harder concepts. Many questions students asked he either didn't answer or answered it differently from what was asked. Lectures and demonstrations were lackluster since you couldn't even tell what he was doing half the time.
He's really great! Nice/approachable! If you have a hard time with accents, be aware that Yang has a fairly thick one. The lectures are good and he teaches more in-depth than what you need to know. He prefers that you read the textbook, but few people did. ALEKS, iClicker, 2 tests (3 but the lowest is dropped), and the final are used for grading.
Difficult to understand in lecture. Told my class that he expected us to self-teach chemistry and the class should just be a review. Don't take him, other students with different professors had a much easier time.
While he is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic, he is NOT good at teaching material. He grades on assignments which cover topics that have not even been covered in class. I attend all classes and complete all assignments. and I still leave feeling like I don't quite understand the material. Also don't bother sending emails as he doesn't respond.
If you have ANY kind of struggles with Chemistry, dont take this Professor. Although he knows what hes talking about, no one else really does. He just doesnt explain things very well, he seems to be behind on some topics, and you just spend the whole class doing homework problems that arent very helpful and are only worth 5% of your grade.
If you need to take Chemistry do not take Shaorong Yang he knows his stuff, but he is very difficult to understand, he is rude, if you have a clear understanding about chemistry you are fine.
Probably the worst class I have taken at UNM. Does not teach well at all. Get ready to study at home by yourself and teach yourself a lot and simpler ways.
Do not take his course. You cannot understand him and he doesn't cover material well. He reviewed for the final for less than 30 minutes and most of it was useless information. His exams are ridiculous and some concepts on there we never covered in class.
I read an earlier post that said If you hate yourself take this class! Well, I guess I super hate myself because my summer is ruined and there seems to be not enough time in the days to do the HW and study for his impossible exams. Very uncaring and rude to students. Have a question? Dont even bother, unless you like being treated like nothing.
This was by far the worst class I have ever taken. Crippling despair is what I have after taking this class. There are no words to describe how insane Dr. Yang is,while being rude/uncaring to his students. His exams are extremely difficult, because he randomly gives pages on specific things taught in 301,but no indication that it will be on the exam
He is a very enthusiastic professor, but the only reason I learned anything in this course was because of ALEKS. He hardly went along with the textbook, plus the homework packets and reading quizzes were often frustrating. Lecture was always interesting, as he is very knowledgeable in chemistry but his explanations would often go over our heads.
he expects you to know more than the foundational knowledge of Chemistry even though it is a foundation course. His notes never correlate to the tests and although he is very knowledgeable in his field, he lacks the ability to teach. I do not recommend this course to freshman who want to build a strong foundation in Chem. his accent is THICCCCCCCCC
This specific teacher did not care for students, was mean during lecture and I really benefited from going to CAPS more than attending the class.
Very Hard to understand and his exams never correlate with things in the reviews, and sometimes include topics that have never been mentioned. Never has the right answers on exams and therefore stops them to change them up on the board. doesn't work with students when it comes to compensation for his mistakes. He even gave out the wrong exam once!
Yang is a funny dude but his lectures are very difficult to follow. 90% of the the things I learned came from aleks and the topics given do not entirely correlate to the exams. If you're taking this class be warned: don't wait till the last minute to do your homework unless you like spending 10 hrs+ of your weekend staring at your computer.
Great guy, although not a great professor. Gives a ton of ALEKS topic each week, but that's the only hw you have. Not a good teacher, only does practice problems during class and doesn't explain anything on a molecular level. Assumes you know what you're doing, better off learning on your own.
Yang doesnt know how to teach. He just does examples he never teaches how to do anything the class is solely based around worksheets. You basically have to teach yourself
Dr. Yang is the best professor I have ever had. To pass his class, your have to put a decent amount of time in studying. reading textbook and doing the hw. You have to take responsibility as a college student should, to follow his requirement and do what he told to do. You can't pass this course without doing the work.
I took Prof. Yang's gen. chem. a few years ago. He was very passionate about Chemistry. He made such a difficult topic seem so easy and fun to learn. He always walked around and ready to help with any questions students might have. I would highly recommend Dr. Yang.
Not the easiest course I took but definitely the best teacher I've ever had. Dr. Yang was so passionate about chemistry and knew how to explain difficult topics in an easy way. Simply put, he was a wonderful and caring teacher. I enjoyed talking with him after class. I highly recommended him as your next chemistry class.
