Compton is an ok prof. She reads off of her slides and her slides and doesnt explain well. Takes attendance with clicker, makes many mistakes when explaining topics or making study guides. Her exams are ridiculously harder than what she teaches during lecture. She doesnt curve. Lab will save your grade. Not a lot of homework. Cares for her students
Really cares for her students and always available for office hours, her exams are extremeley difficult but shes overall really nice nd has goood review sessions before exams, does not curve even when the class average is a failing grade
Dr. Compton was a solid teacher, at least better than Wingrave, from what I hear. You definitely need to attend lecture (clicker points) and also get graded on homework. She makes herself VERY accessible to students, which is probably her best quality.
The lectures are crowded and long and it's so easy to get distracted on your phone or laptop because you're almost guaranteed to zone out at least once during her lectures. Dr. Compton is smart and peppy, and she obviously understands the subject well, but the material is just CRAZY HARD. Lots of powerpoints and time-consuming things like labs.
Though she's better than Wingrave, she was still an awful professor. She made practice exams & workshop exercises & answer keys for both, but multiple of answers on the keys were wrong from stupid mistakes, so you wouldn't know the real answer. Very unclear lectures, only went for the iclickr credit. Thankful I took AP, or I would have done awfully
Dr. Compton is for sure better than Wingrave, so take her if u have the opportunity. Lab can either make or break ur grade. Really cares about students and has online office hours before tests. Normally has a clicker question every class. Sapling is not too much and pretty easy (saved my grade). Doesn't curve exams
Compton is a really great teacher! She is super helpful & gave so many practice exams & had online office errors to help with the exams. Although they were hard, she does curve. The homework isn't hard at all & helps with you're grade A LOT. Labs are difficult but my TA didn't grade hard (luckily) so it helped my grade! Overall, highly recommend
From never taking AP chem in high school, I have a b+ in this class and it really is not that difficult. However, the exam average is always a 59 or some crazy low number, but i have been floating by. I think she is a really caring professor and truly cares about her students. Personally i like chemistry more because of her.
Dr. Compton gives good lectures. However there is so much covered in this class that it is sometimes hard to keep up with. Clickers every class, online homework due every week. 3 exams and a multiple choice final and she drops the lowest exam for the final. She doesn't curve her exams AT ALL and gives no extra credit. GOOD LUCK IF YOU TAKE THIS!
Dr. Compton is a good lecturer and does a LOT to help prepare for exams but her exams are very difficult. I have learned a ton from her but still struggle on exams. She is a very sweet intelligent woman but you really need to work in this class. Definitely best option for 103 professor but that does not mean it will be easy.
A very nice professor who clearly is passionate about what she teaches, however she is often unclear and at times would brush over a topic that later is heavily covered on the exam. HARD exams and a lot of concepts learned quickly without really going in depth or in a way that more students can understand.
CHEM104 itself is already hard, but the added lab component of it made it ten times worse. The TA for this class is the same every year so good luck with lab. Labs are graded like we're grad students and brought my grade down significantly. Homework due at the end of the semester instead of weekly, worth 10%.
She's a very nice, passionate professor who really cares about her students' success. There's a lot covered in lectures and she also holds review sessions before each of the 3 midterm exams for workshop credit. Lab can be difficult and there's a lot of work before and after but her exams aren't too hard if you study enough and do practice problems.
Decent professor for a really difficult class. Exams were significantly harder than the study material and lectures. Lectures were almost all powerpoint and could get pretty boring. Dr. Compton is probably the best professor you're going to find for CHEM103 at UD though.
Be sure to always read through to ppts she gives, workshop is kind of pointless, the Lab is the hardest part of the class, she always makes sure to give as much help with review and outside of class assistance. Chem in general is a hard class, she does the best she can. Her exams are very hard though so STUDY!!!
Really nice and tries to make lecture at least a little entertaining. Workshop is pointless but depending on your workshop leader you'll prob leave early anyway. Exams are tough but go through her practice exams and it's definitely manageable, plus she also does review sessions which are beneficial. You definitely get out what you put in.
If you haven't taken more than one year of chemistry in high school DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. She has a tendency to briefly go over some things and then not come back. Definitely get yourself a tutor the second you question if you will pass. She told us she expected our first exam average to be a 60%, yes set me up to fail thanks.
Literally the best professor I've had in college. What's on the exams is exactly what she teaches in lecture. Review sessions are super helpful. If you took some kind of chemistry in high school, you'll be fine. The only annoying part is workshop, unless you have a good workshop leader.
She really cares about her students and wants them to do well. She put her child down to sleep then did online review sessions where we could ask questions the night before exams because some students had asked for more help. The class wasn't "easy" because chem is never easy, but I still got an A-. She's a realistic and understanding professor.
I really enjoy learning with her. She teaches chemistry very well and I really hope that she teaches CHEM112. She's available after class and she can answer your questions personally very well. Expect you to have basic high school chemistry. Just show up to class and you'll be fine. and personally, don't talk during class, or you'll be lost
Dr. Compton is such a great professor. She gives good problem sets and quizzes every week that are very similar to the tests. Lectures are useful and there are lots of group work with packets that aren't collected for a grade. Lab is fairly difficult but she usually curves it at the end. She's also super friendly and approachable. Take this class!!
Dr. Compton is easily the top choice as far as intro chem professors goes. She has amazing, thorough lectures that break everything down to the basics for those who don't have experience in chemistry. She doesn't expect you to enter her class with prior knowledge and provides tons of practice problems and study guides to prepare for exams.
Dr. Compton is an amazing professor! Her lectures are really easy to follow and she does a good job making sure that concepts make sense. She does practice problems in class to help and also gives study guides and practice exams that are almost the exact same as the exam which is really helpful.
she is nice but, she is not very good at teaching just reads off slides. she has 4 exams in total (including final) and she drops none of them. the exams are extremely harder than the practice tests and what she covered in class, she does not curve exams either. you must go to class for iclicker points. you have homework every week.
Dr. Compton is a great professor and really cares about her students success. She is very willing to work with you during office hours. It is unfortunate that her lab tas are horrible people and will destroy your grade after countless hours of work but she curves your lab grade in the end to even everything out. A lot of work but worth it.
The labs are terrible. Compton is obviously dedicated and cares, but she's maligned by a terrible Lab Manager named Kathryn Burke that's an absolute stonewall. The lectures are very wordy, but I believed Compton does that so that you summarize it in your notes. Lectures are a week behind labs, so, read and reread the lab manual for information.
Dr. Compton is a capable, professor who provides effective coverage of the material and intersperses lectures occasionally with interesting stories or devices to help understand the material. Overal, she is compotent.
She is a very nice lady. However, I do not recommend taking CHEM104H. The exams are filled with challenging trick questions that are different from the ones we study (especially the final). The main problem though, which isn't her fault, the labs in CHEM104 are the worst! You might be better off with Wingrave's CHEM104 because of the labs.
This class was really hard but she made it as easy as it could've been. If you go to class she explains things really well. Exams were very very hard but similar to the study guides.
Dr. Compton is a breath of fresh air in a world of old, confusing, and unrelatable STEM professors. CHEM103 is by no means am easy class if you haven't taken AP chem but Dr. Compton makes passing possible even if your new to chemistry. Wishing I had her for Chem104!
I like professor Compton as a person, but she makes the class hard. She explains things way harder than they need to be. Exams are oly 40% of your grade so homework helps boost it. Doesn't help and doesn't give extra credit. Labs are absolutely awful. Dr. Burke is never to be seen and the TAs are awful. Impossible
Compton obviously cares about her students. She knows the material is hard and is willing to work with you individually to help. There's a lot of work associated with that class, but that's to try and help pad your grade and prepare you for the exam. I would definitely take her again. The lab is terrible, but she doesn't have control over that.
Honestly, a chemistry professor doesn't get much better than professor Compton her exams are hard but not impossible and she genuinely cares she curves when Necessary gives study guides and Gives room to get your grade up With homework and quizzes if you do bad on the exams shes a prof that wants you to learn and pass her class.
Dr. Compton is a wonderful professor. Her lectures are always very interesting and she is incredibly knowledgeable. Dr. Compton cares about her students, wants them to do well and includes a lot of other assignments such as hw or workshops so that the grade is buffered. Would take her class again, great teacher!
Absolutely the sweetest, most kind, caring professor in the whole university. So understanding and approachable. She recognizes that her students are humans and not just things sitting in a chair in front of her. She will care about you and your performance in her class.
Dr. Compton was a great chem teacher overall. She is a super nice woman who cares about what she does, and she also truly cares about her students. Sometimes her exams were tricky because of typos or a MC question that is math based but the exact answer is not an option. She teaches the material pretty well and you will leave with more knowledge!!
Compton is a nice and caring professor, but is rather hard to reach. Questions were very vaguely answered through emails and during office hours. Additionally, there is a large discrepancy between the difficultly of lecture material and exams.
Dr. Compton was a great CHEM112 professor, and she really cared about her students learning. That being said, the exams were far more difficult than lecture or even quiz material. Attendance and participation are part of your grade, and go to lecture or youll be lost come exam time
Her class and exams are difficult but shes an amazing professor. She warns you the test will be hard and holds review sessions. She is a great professor despite the hard nature of the class.
I liked her as a person, but I dont think she did a great job at explaining things. Her tests were very tough and so unfair. During class she gives basic examples and in tests she messes things up, would not recommend.
Dr. Compton is a really understanding professor and would grant extensions, be flexible, and just work with her students in general. Her lectures can be kind of heavy, but she frequently ended class a few minutes early. She does give a quiz once a week and there are multiple exams throughout the semester.
As a person she's really nice. But honestly unless you truly put in the work there is no way you'll be able to just get by with this class. Her exams are very difficult and her lectures can be challenging to decipher. It's hard to keep up. If you're good at chem and simply "get it" you'll be fine. But if you're not, good luck.
Compton has shown us this semester that she truly will not help her struggling students and will instead heavily punish them. This class, between lecture and lab (WHICH ARE DISCONNECTED) is virtually impossible to pass unless you are already a chemistry master. The material is ridiculously complicated, and little help is given to confused students.
If I'm being honest, she she seems nice. ngl though, i'm an average student. She's hard. If you think you're gonna pass not taking notes you're wrong. The final is HELL. If you can take any other professor for CHEM104 do it. Alsmost ended it bc of this classs.
class exam averages are in the 60s which she's okay with. She would always say in her classes that she taught her other classes wrong and that they should join the other lecture or watch the videos. You could never meet in office hours because there would be a 100+ students waiting for her. She went on 4 day vacay when we didn't get a spring break.
Dr. Compton was very good at simplifying complex topics. However, even the simplifications were still tough. If you've taken AP CHEM, this class won't be too difficult. If not, she moves fast and you can easily get lost. Tests were hard but fair--they tested what were in the lectures. Very good chemistry teacher.
Shes an amazing professor and truly cares about her students. She was very compensating when she saw her students struggling. Overall a very sweet professor and does the best she can do.
A nice person who seems to care about her students. Quizzes were open note, but tests weren't which gave people false confidence. Wasn't the best at explaining and often made mistakes during lectures and assessments. I think she had too much on her plate due to having over 500 students. Overall, I was NOT happy with how the class was run.
She's a nice professor and responds to emails quickly. However, she tends to move very quickly through the lectures and you have to re-watch them in order to truly understand the material. The quizzes were open-note which was helpful, however, the tests were much harder than the quizzes and practice problems in lecture.
Compton is a very nice and caring professor. She has lots of fail safes set up so that even if you bomb the exams, you won't fail as long as you do the other work. She puts a lot of time aside to help through office hours and pre exam study sessions. Her exams aren't easy, but not overly hard. Just do the homework and study the practice problems.
if you easily understand chemistry you'll be fine. However, if you struggle with this subject she might not be the best professor for you. She goes super quick, tests were much more difficult than lecture or quizzes, & the final was just something else. I really struggled with her. I recommend going anywhere else.
Dr. Compton is a great professor! I took her honors CHEM103 class, and she gave great interactive lectures. I especially enjoyed when the class broke out into groups to work on note packets (very collaborative). Her office hours are great--go to them! She responds to emails and gives great explanations one-on-one when you need help.
She made online learning engaging. If you took ap chem this class is really easy. She teaches the class like you have never taken chemistry before and makes chemistry understandable for everyone. She is really understanding and holds lots of office hours.
She is a great professor, genuinely cares about her students. However, she leaves extra practice to you, so makes sure you take the initiative to solve extra problems outside of class. Otherwise you might struggle since she is very fast paced.
Had her fall semester online for lectures, but the discussion was in person. Her lectures are really good with summarized slides and interactive chat. She responds to emails quickly and is very flexible with timings and such. The class itself has weekly quizzes without fail, 3 exams, and a final. Make sure you study or else you are failing.
She's a decent professor. You have quizzes once a week which are not bad but you need to watch the lectures for you to pass them. You have 3 midterms and a multiple choice final. The midterms are a lot harder than the problems you do in discussion and lecture, and you def need to study for the exams.
The class is easy if you took AP Chem. There are quizzes every week on the material. Don't buy the textbook; it's a waste of money. If you've never taken AP Chem, you might want to get the online book. Classes are mandatory -- there are poll questions almost every class (not graded on accuracy though)
tests were ridiculously hard, quizzes every single week that were specific to her lectures. she did polls every lecture so participation counted. she always ignored my emails but she was a nice person
Very lecture heavy
Professor Compton seems like a nice person, but I do not think she is the best professor. The exams are much harder than all the other material she gives, and not similar to the practice exams she makes. If you don't test well, good luck because tests are the large majority of your grade.
She goes very fast paced and unless you remember everything from chem 103 like the back fo your hand you are going to struggle. Her lectures are so fast and her exams are nothing like the homework or practice exams she makes. You will cry leaving the exams. You have weekly quizzes and hw that seem to not help your grade at all. TAKE SOMEWHERE ELSE
Compton is very knowledgeable, however, she does go at a fast pace that might be hard for some people. The first exam was extremely difficult but the other 2 were very similar to the practice exam she posts before. You have to put in work outside of class to keep up and do well. Weekly online quizzes and weekly homework help boost your grades.
Very nice, does clicker questions, weekly homeworks that aren't that hard, but tests are.
Compton is super sweet and will help if you go to office hours or ask. She does expect you to know the material well and the test reflect that. She teaches really fast so if you need time to comprehend science concepts I wouldnt recommend taking her.
I would strongly recommend taking Dr. Compton's class. Her lectures are fun and thorough, and the tests are completely based on class dicussions/examples. The bad reviews on here probably come from people who never bothered to show up to class or put forth much effort at all. This class is the best experience I've ever had with chemistry.
"I teach this class like you've never taken chemistry before" the biggest lie i have ever heard. she is insanely lecture heavy and tests are hard. If you are willing to actually go to her lectures and keep up, you probably will be fine, but personally I think she asks way too much from her students.
If you want to do well in CHEM104 do not take it with Professor Compton. Although, her lecture slides were organized and easy to read her class was still so confusing. Our homework assignments and practice weren't crazy difficult BUT the real exams were so difficult and nothing like the homeworks or practice exams.
I'm taking her 103 honors lecture and it's definitely my favorite this semester. She's enthusiastic about her students and it's refreshing to see when a lot of professors don't really care. Her lectures are fun, a bit fast-paced, but otherwise clear. Go to her office hours, she's approachable and willing to work with you if there's a problem.
She makes homework and exams very hard. Her lectures are easy to understand though. Her exams are hard but, you should be better if you study. Everyone struggles in that class together.
You have to show up to every lecture because there are clicker questions that count for grades (not based on correctness though). You also need to show up because she moves very fast and might only mention something once and its on the test. Weekly quizzes on previous weeks material and 3 exams. Exams are very difficult and questions are complex.
Assumes that you have previous chemistry knowledge. Very fast-paced, hard tests, weekly quizzes, homework can be unrealistically hard. The only teaching style is lectures, so good luck if that's not your learning style. Accessible for office hours. Exam prep is almost non-existent and the practice tests are not like the actual exams.
Attendance is graded. She only lectures, and the only practice is the weekly homework which is unrealistically hard and graded on accuracy. There are weekly multiple-choice quizzes. The exams are very hard. There is no curve, but she claims there will be at the end of the course. Unless you have a lot of previous knowledge, I don't recommend.
Homework is unnecessarily hard and a big jump from lecture. Tests are just as hard, use textbook problems and practice problems from class to prepare for quizzes and tests. If you have no chemistry background do not take this class unless you are willing to spend countless hours studying. Participation is easy points to boost your grade.
Quiz every week and 4 total exams during the semester. Her exams are pretty hard, and she keeps the average low. She was knowledgeable and good at lecturing but get ready to study for the exams. Light homework.
Professor Compton is an extremely friendly, nice person who I do believe wants all of her students to suceed. BEWARE that the exams are crazy hard and NOTHING like what the homework, quizzes or textbook problems prepare you for.
Took the Honors version of 112 (not listed on here) in the spring. Amazing professor, just watch out for the tests and homework. They involve much more complicated problems than those given out in the lectures. Make sure you actually understand the content you learn so you can apply it to other concepts in the class (important for tests).
compton listened to feeback of earlier RMP reviews and started doing harder questions in lecture. Homeworks can be challenging but the tests are not difficult (coming from someone who never took ap chem this class was managable). 60% of grade comes from exams so take them serious and youll slay.
Dr. Compton is a solid professor. She answers questions well and her office hours are beneficial. Tests and quizzes are fair. Students in her 111 class often complained about her but personally I liked her as a professor. If you need the credits and you have chem knowledge from high school, I recommend the course.
Compton is extremely nice and knowledgeable however taking this as an honors class was difficult considering my only prior chem knowledge was from sophomore year of high school which was online during Covid. If you took AP chem, which I did not, you will be fine. Her grading scale is extremely generous. The organic chem tutor on YouTube saved me
I found her lectures to be helpful in understanding the material. The main problem was the exams. They weren't focused on my chemical knowledge, but how well I could interpret her questions. Therefore, although she is really good at teaching chemistry I believe her test questions were unfair and did not align with the expectations of the course.
This class was incredibly difficult for students who have limited prior knowledge of chemistry. I spent numerous hours at tutoring to be able to do my homework. Also, students in my class were quite reluctant to speak in class, even when the professor repeatedly encouraged the class to. Do not take this class if you did not take AP Chemistry.
Helpful and caring: lectures are very informative, teaches well for the difficult course material, answers questions effectively. The homework, quizzes, and tests are extremely difficult (class averages were usually 70's). Curves at the end: I failed nearly all examinations but ended with a B. Make sure to pay attention and prepare to study A LOT.
Dr. Compton was an outstanding professor. Her classes made heavy use of powerpoints, but they were informative and helped me understand the information for the course. She was extremely accessible outside of class, and I spent many hours in her office for help with problems. Her homework is tough, and exams are worth the majority of your grade.
She's a great professor, very passionate about the subject. Classes use powerpoints to lecture which can get boring but if you pay attention you'll know the material. She's incredibly kind and understanding and very accessible in office hours. Exams are very difficult so study hard. Homework each week can be tough but isn't so bad.
This is a difficult intro course if you haven't taken AP, but Dr. Compton teaches it very well and it is definitely possible to do well. She is always available during office hours and explains concepts very clearly. Her exams and homework are difficult but you can work with others on the homework and the exams are very fair.
Dr. Compton is very caring and her lectures are helpful. Attendance matters to some extent, but you can definitely miss a few days because she only does 1-3 polls a day. Exams are challenging, but she prepares you with study guides, practice exams, and the homework is helpful. Definitely wants her students to succeed.
This class honestly just shouldn't exist. If you have taken AP Chem before the class is basically review with a few new topics. If you haven't taken AP Chem do not take this class. The tests were extremely difficult sometimes and even some of the quizzes. Don't expect an easy A if you have Chem experience. Dr. Compton is a very fair and nice prof.
Dr. Compton is the absolute best! I had her for CHEM103H (introductory chemistry course) and learned so so much in her class. She makes chemistry very easy to understand. She also tries to help students with the horrible lab corequisite. Very clear grading criteria, her tests are difficult but straightforward if you study. Highly highly recommend!!
Dr. Compton is extremely caring about how her students are doing. She works to give many different example problems with the concepts that are introduced during lecture that really help to reinforce understanding. These are useful as she focuses heavily on application of concepts. Overall, it's a great natural progression from her 103 class
Prof. Compton is a super sweet professor who wants to make the class as streamlined as possible for her students. She's super accessible for asking questions and makes the curriculum easy for students who only need Chemistry as a general requirement. Sometimes, she reads the lecture slides quickly, but otherwise she's a great teacher.
Great professor couldn't wish for a better instructor!
Shara is so inspiring, her lectures are top notch. She clearly spends a lot of time thinking about the class and how to deliver it in the best way.
While claiming that you need no prior chemistry knowledge, she speeds through content that she assumes we already know. She often makes mistakes when making quizzes/exams, resulting in them getting voided or we have to redo them. She has inconsistencies across assignments. Finding a project rubric is like looking for a needle in a haystack.
I really like her as a person, but as a professor she does have a lot to work on. The things we learn in class is so much easier than the exams or quizzes. The exams are hard, and I never have any idea what to expect when taking them. However, she is really nice and the course is basically a review of AP Chem, but less extensive.
She's generally just not very intelligent, and frequently said she didn't know when asked questions about the material which should is shocking for a chem 1 class. Exams weren't hard but prepare to read an essay of background info per question.
Good at explaining things, and explains in detail. She is creative with the questions she gives, especially on the homeworks but the quizzes and exams aren't as bad. There is a chem literature assignment that she grades leniently but it can be a little annoying especially if you don't have a good partner.
