Prof. Sury is AMAZING. He's probably the best professor I've ever had at SCU. He's totaly focused on our success and has gotten a lot of us totaly intersted in careers in finance. He takes whatever time we need to understand the material. Love him!
By far, one of the best profesors and courses I've had. Profesor Sury knows this subject inside and out and you can tell he lives it. His passion is so obvious that everyone shows up to every class (tho attendance is not mandatory). Hes created a new course for next qtr on investment portfolio mgmt that sounds awesome. He gets an A+ from me.
I have learned more in Sury's class than in all my other classes at SCU combined. He is tough no doubt, but you will learn a LOT. I've switched majors because of this class and have a new appreciation for the business of finance and investments. Very real world applications.
FNCE 135 is Prof. Sury's newest course. It's only been a week, but I've learned more in just two class sessions with Sury than in my entire Investments course with another prof. I wish I took 124 with him instead. This is gonna be a hard course, but we're already learning tons. He's 100% available for students, both for coursework/jobs info.

Prof. Sury is truly dedicated to helping us. He's totally an expert in the field and he makes us want to come to every class. Like others said, his energy and enthusiasm are totally cool and keep us totally into the material. Absolutely the best!
Best teacher I've had at Santa Clara. Great class, amazingly useful. Very hard and time consuming, but material yo get to learn is stuff people only see grad school or in the industry. Sury is very helpful with this material at all times. Very intensive group project work throughout the quarter, but projects are real life applications. A+ professor
Prof Sury is absolutely one of my favorite professors (and people) i have ever met. i learned so much in our class and his energy and knowledge and passion make coming to class an incredable experience. sounds cheesy, but i wish the course actually lasted longer so i could of learned more. i will take any class he teaches.
Absolutely wonderful. Prof. Sury is one of the most genuine, thoughtful, and caring people I have ever come across. I loved EVERY minute of the course (and it was probably the hardest course I have ever taken). He makes every lesson practical and shows us how we'll use it "on the job." His passion & energy is amazing--he totally pushes us to learn.
He was the VP of Goldman Sachs, and now he is here in SCU to teach us. Great Teacher, he do everything to make the course as close as the real finance world.
A+ Player, A+ Person, A+ Professor
Prof Sury makes our class totally applicable to the real world. Especially with everything going on in the markets and the economy now, he helps tie our material to what's happening in the world. I 100% recommend this course, especially with the market briefings he has the teams deliver every class. It is preparing me for a career in wealth mgmt.
He is very difficult. and treats his students as if they were working for him. He is also very cocky. I understand he has a background that will support it, however statements such as "i wont deal with a client unless its over 50 mil..." blah blah says a lot about yourself. To me its just a class, to him its a work orientation.
Yeah, his course is hard. And I would say he's confident, not cocky. Hey it's finance: you gotta be. Then again, I've been a trader for 7 years and it IS my life (also an MBA student), so I can say its the way biz is. He gets 5 stars from me, but I agree with the other poster, its no easy A (I'm a CFA and got a B+). He's still the best prof ever
im taking Prof Sury's course and it is by FAR the best course i have ever taken either undergrad or grad. he is absolutely wonderful, knows his stuff, and conveys a passion and excitement that honestly makes me WANT to come to every single class. we are learning practical techniques/strategies that i've seen actually used in real world settings.
prof sury's fnce 696 is THE HARDEST course ive ever taken. ive never worked harder for a class, but it is also THE BEST course ive ever taken. he's totally amazing and is probably the most interesting prof ive taken.
Well I agree with almost every other post on here. This was one of the hardest courses of my MBA career but also one of the only courses where I truly felt like I got my money's worth and felt like a real top tier MBA class. I now better understand the events in the financial markets, analyze investements, and make smarter decisions.
I was an accounting concentration before taking Prof Sury's class. I'm now a finance concentration. His class made me work, made me think, and most of all he inspired me and the others in the class to be the best we could be. It doesn't hurt that he's cute and cool too haha. Take him, you won't regret it (except he does make you work hard!)
If you want to learn finance then you will take all Sury's classes. He is way above every Finance teacher at SCU. If you take Sury you will get an Elite Business School Education right here at SCU. All other teachers at SCU should be forced to teach at his level. If you don't want to go into Finance do not take this class; you will be miserable
this is a class that should be required of all finance majors who have any interest in investments. prof. sury knows his stuff, makes class fun and intresting, and is honestly an exciting profesor. his course is like bootcamp for investments, probaly from his background in law enforcement/police academy, but for me its opened my eyes to finance!
Professor Sury is super interesting, intelligent, kind, caring, with an awesome sense of humor, and...way way sexy! i mean, what's not to like?? ;) he is probably the best prof i have ever had. i wld take any course that he teaches and recommend his classes to anyone who wants to learn with a totally hot genius who shares his knowledge of Finance!
He is a great prof. I learned quite a bit in his class. The only problem is that his attention to blonds is somewhat distracting.
I loved prof. Sury too, probably one of the best professors not just at the graduate level but also at undergraduate level (I was an SCU undergrad as well). As for the previous post, I always thought he preferred you brunettes! Oh well...
I took Applied Portfolio Management from him. The best course ever I did in all of my MBA at Santa Clara. Prof Sury makes you work very hard. The course becomes full time but you will definitely learn a lot. Because of his wealth and hot looks, the girls are all over him for rest of the course :-). But don't worry boys, it doesn't affect your grade.
This man is a genius. I've tracked his comments since taking his MBA Investments course last year and nearly all his investment views have come true. Don't take the class expecting "hot stock tips" but every once in a while, he will make comments about the markets and investments and if you listen carefully, are extremely valuable (and profitable!)
Profesor Sury is without a doubt one of the most amazing profesors I have ever known. Beyond that, he shows passion and energy that I've never seen before. I know it sounds corny, but he really is the best and I consider myself lucky to be taking his class (and I'm not one to usually gush)!
I was going to write my own review but I think I'll just echo what everyone else has already said. Prof Sury is the best. Though he moves fast, he's without doubt the one prof that has really made me excited in business. I love his passion for the material and his care for his students--who he often refers to as his "family", how cool is that??
This is a professor that you really gotta take. If you want to learn about finance, not just from the textbooks, but how it is used in the real world, prof sury's class is the one. He has given us cues on how to interview, finance ethics, laws, rules/regulations, most of all spending time with us to learn the techniques. I'm gonna take his 135 too.
he knows his stuff cuz he used to run some hedge fund for super wealthy families called S4 Capital, but he's RREAL TOUGH, expecting you have pre-knowledge of SEC laws, Securities regulation and such. Still he's a great professor and cares about his students, and their knowledge of the markets from bonds, to options. Highly recommend!
I can't speak to the SEC rules and regs the previous poster mentioned, but I will agree that this probably the toughest prof you'll ever take, and it is worth every minute. I have attended every class and I'm now a "convert" from Accounting to Finance after just 8 weeks. I'm taking 135 in spring, like one the other posters, its his advanced class.
I'm in the Santa Clara ACE program. We are exposed to some of the best instructors/profs at SCU. I can honestly say that Prof Sury is the best by far. His energy, dedication, and how he gives of himself is totally admirable. Only one area of improvement would be that he might consider going a bit slower. He covers material rapidly!
No doubt, he is the best. I put my reputation where my mouth is: I've told all my friends to take his class. Last I heard, he has a waitlist a mile long for his 124 in the Winter.
Profesor Sury's class is the one to take if you want to learn anything in investments or finance. Hes entertaining, informative, but also challenges you. I have never loved working so hard in class before. Take him, you will work hard, but you will learn more than you ever have before.
i wanted to wait for my grade before posting haha (j/k), but seriously, this is the class u want to take if u want to understand the technical world of investing. like everyone else says, u will def learn a lot.
Professor Sharath Sury is AWESOME! Echoing the other posters here, this is a very tough course by nature, but Prof Sury does really teach material extremely well! Professor Sharath Sury really cares about his students and how we grasp the concepts. It's a difficult course, and a LOT of work, but an extremely valuable and practical class!
Take Sury! You will work your a*s off but it is way worth it. Esp. with all the changes on Wall St, he tells it to you like it is, not just what the book says. Sury's class has useful info on rules, regs, ethics, and mkt structure beyond what the book has. I'm sitting in on it again to soak up more (I already made an A in the class).
Professor Sharath Sury is one of the profs at Santa Clara that i sincerely admire. So, I did not receive an A in the class, but am still pleased with my grade! Like the post from 12/31 says, the work is challenging, the expectations are high, but the knowledge gained is the greatest reward of all! Thank you, Prof Sury!
Prof Sharath Sury is truly one of a kind! Real world experience gives him the ability to relate book material to actual events and situations. Of course, i agree with the previous post - Sury's class requires dedication & hard work, but the course is a MUST for all serious students that want a solid foundation to build their finance knowledge on!
Mr. Sharath Sury has a wealth of information about finance! He's especially helpful and aware of his students' progress, and is usually even willing to answer ?'s after class (you'll likely see at least 2 or 3 students approaching him at the end of every class as the course progresses). Yes, tons of work FAST, but I agree that the class is a MUST!
Sharath Sury is one of the MAIN reasons that i'm eager to get up at 5am and analyze pre-market activity! Keeping students heavily involved, Prof Sharath Sury uses realistic examples to support material taught - This is what made it so much fun because we need theory AND practical experience Combined to compete w/the best! Next with Sury: FNCE 135!
Professor Sury is indeed, "Awesome"! Believe me, it isn't b/c of his "humor"! lol Seriously, I had the privilege of taking Prof Sharath Sury, & he's prob. the best (most qualified) FNCE Prof at SCU. Extremely TOUGH course!! You'll be a slave to the class, but grateful that you had the opportunity! And the knowledge/confidence gained... PRICELESS!
Professor Sury allows students to learn AND experience FNCE. I agree w/the comments below, except, I actually like his humor, and appreciate the professors that try to make class more enjoyable! Sharath Sury is definitely ahead of his time, one of a kind, and a complete joy to have as an instructor to teach and dissect such difficult material.
Prof Sury's class on Investments is by far the best course I've had in my college career. He is energetic, enthusiastic, extremely knowledgeable, and cares about his students. I'd take any course he teaches.
I must agree with the posted comment below me and say that Mr. Sharath Sury is indeed one of the few professors to keep students motivated, even after finals. Using his experience and background, Professor Sury is able to interest and engage u in the course. Not sure of a better way to learn the intricacies of investing than with Prof Sharath Sury!
This has to be one of the hardest classes of my college career, but Prof. Sharath Sury made clear what i didn't understand, and was usually available to answer questions after class, or would allow you to schedule an appt with him or a TA for further help or clarification. If you will be in the finance field, Sharath Sury's classes are invaluable!
Both Professors, Sharath + M. Sury, are geniuses when it comes to math and finance. Professor Sharath Sury has a career that I hope to emulate! He's my finance mentor and i'm disappointed to see his next class already filled! Hopefully seats are added soon--no other professor provides such clear, comprehensive insight quite like prof Sharath Sury.
Both sharath and manda may be bright and very helpful, indeed, but this course is Far From Easy, and takes the majority of your available study time!! prof sury DOES get the students involved and has often reinforced course material using examples that aren't in the book. so be prepared and dedicated--and don't plan on missing much of this class!
Don't know Manda Sury, but Prof Sharath Sury Rocks! This course is a must for all SERIOUS finance students... Class isn't easy, but worth every minute!
If you plan to be a finance professional, you'd be a FOOL not to take Sharath Sury's course on investments! (sorry, i couldn't miss the chance to reference today :/)
Prof Sury (Sharath, not Manda) is truly a thoughtful, caring, and motivational professor whose instruction is top notch. Professor Sury is in a league of his own with the ability to break down complicated problems into a clear understanding of each element by relating the problem to real world situations! Highly recommend!!
When they said this Prof's class was like dedicating yourself to a job, i didn't comprehend what the name Sharath Sury meant! Struggled to get a B, but i have to admit that this is one class, and Prof Sury is one of the instructors from Santa Clara whose class i will remember and take with me long after graduation. Definitely worth the effort!!
Learning finance is not my favorite thing in the world, but the prof ( Sharath Sury ) made it the most interesting, by far. Others are right about this class requiring a lot of time to do well, but it isnt "nightmare" difficult at all IF you are willing to actively immerse yourself with the material Sury "suggests".
Two projects, a ton of quizzes (takes only top 4 scores), and an final which you can choose between exam and research. Awesome class, extremely helpful, very easy, gives pretty much all A's and B's even if you don't know how to do the project. But you work your ass off
Prof Sury is by far the best professor at Santa Clara. You have to work extremely hard in this class but the payoff is extremely high. I've graduated this June and am working for an investment firm in SF and have already been able to apply what I've learned to 2 projects I've been assigned. Great course.
Professor Sharath Sury teaches a very difficult but extremely informative finance/investment course at SCU. Prof Sury's course is a definite must if you plan to have a future in the field of finance.
Have Mercy! I remember this was an INTENSE course, and Prof Sury, even with his quirky humor, expects nothing less than the best from his students. If you're not a FNCE Major, don't take Sury. If you are and want to learn Inv. from someone with practical experience, Good Luck finding a spot left in his classes! lol
prof. sury is the best teacher i have ever taken. I have learned more in his two classes than every other finance class combined. This class will work you but it is worth it.
The SCIFIRM article posted below is true.I'm a leading member of it and helped organized that conference, which was very successful. We also had a lecture we organized by Prof Statman on behavioral finance = OUTSTANDING. Prof Sry is tryin to help make SCU in the mold of the Ivy Leagues and I'm glad to be part of the effort. (FNCE 124, Fall 2010).
without a doubt, the best professor ever. you will learn more in this course than you will in all the other fnce courses combined. for real. but you have to keep up. each lecture is fast, difficult, but completely full of useful information. he's smart, intelligent, and personally having a cute prof makes it a little easier to go to class ;)
Sharath Sury is in a league of his own!! This class without Professor Sury would have been like my ex boyfriend without a map. LOST! Take Prof Sury for a real world education that is USEFUL and vital to continue studying FNCE.
Prof Sury is the best teacher i have ever had at any level-high school or college. he inspires students and has taught me how to understand what is happening in the world. i can now have good conversatins w/my family (lots of who are in business) on the markets and economy. For a prof, Sury is pretty kewl. but no joke the class works you way hard
Professor Sharath Sury is Definitely the instructor to take if you want to know how textbook finance is used in REAL application. I'm not sure how the student (2 below mine) rated Prof Sury so well and still ranked "poor quality"? idk..he's probably the best at SCU, but make no mistake, this course will demand your time, concentration and effort!
Take this course! 100% agreed with the previous poster. Sharath Sury must be one of the most effective instructors in the nation. Signing up for his for 135 if it's still avail.
By far the best prof you'll ever take. Knows his stuff. Hes able to mix theory and practice. I've never thought 3.5 hours of lecture could be so much fun and educational. He keeps my interest...even if a couple of us get distracted by how totally cute he is! Though that's not why I give him a good review. He's the best.
I took fnce 135 on the recomendation of several other former students. It did not disapoint. This class is so much more like a true capstone class than any other I've taken. You'll work your butt off but in the end, the skills I've learned and am using (Merill Private Wealth) are invalluable. Highly recommend.
Sury's course really should be required for anyone going for the investment field. Our class was made up of lots of team project work, but it's all very real-world. Sury writes up letters throughout the quarter for the whole class that shows his constant willingness to help and his genuine care for the students, something I've never seen before.
Prof Sury's APM course was the hardest course that I also loved. Theres a lot of teamwork required and he makes you present your work and quizzes you on the spot to make sure you know what your saying, as if your really presenting to a client. So, you have to be on your toes. Thats the part I liked the most though.
Sury 135 class is a great class to take if for to excel in money management. Personally, I didnt find the class too hard, but I can see that if you dont keep up you can fall behind. I like his enthusiastic, intelligence approach to the business. I also took his 124 course.
Class is a KILLER! But Sharath Sury makes the the lessons and concept easier to grasp. Taking a course from Prof Sury can be quite enjoyable as he keeps the interaction at a high level.
He could have been one of the greatest professors I've ever had for his passion for students and elucidation. But it will remain a "could", in my books and many others', for reasons that must be experienced rather than read.
Among the best I've experienced. Wouldn't be a stretch to say Sury's had a huge impact on my academics. He inspires and inspired me to turn my attitude around and find passion in something. I've now found that "calling" in business and in the markets. I'm totally grateful for the experience. I for one will always consider him a true mentor.
Absolutely amazing. Sury's bringing up the level of SCU to Ivy League standards. Classes may be hard, but you rather struggle a bit and learn a ton so you'll be better in the long run. This is really the only class in the business school where I feel I really learned something.
Sury is totally amazing. He motivates, inspires, and excites us. I converted to a double major to include finance because of his Investments class. It's hard work as others say, but totally well worth it. He does go a bit fast at times, but every class is full to the top with useful information. I'd take or audit any class he teaches.
Professor Sury is the man. He knows his stuff and really knows how to explain even the most challenging stuff in clear ways. Take 124 and 135 (though he's not back till next year) and you'll know enough to ace your interviews. Worked for me (1st year FA at Merrill).
Quite possibly the best prof I've ever had. Hes made a huge impact on my life and in my career. A year after taking the APM course (hardest I ever worked), and I'm still ahead of the curve at work with what I learned. Will always be grateful for taking Sury's 455 and 696.
i took 124 with Sury this past year and it was so awesome and i learned so much that i sat in on add'l classes the next qtr (im not even kidding). and yes i made a good grade the first time around. first, you learn a lot in the course - sitting in again kept me updated on whats happening in the world/markets and second, no lie - he's cute/funny :)
Profesor Sury is easily the best prof at SCU, whether for business or any other subject. His course was one of the most challenging and pushed me to think quick and fast on my feet, but also to use good economic logic in solving probs or answering questions. The best part of class was his knowledge, passion for the subject and teaching style.
A thoughtful and wonderful professor and person. I've kept in touch with him since graduating last June. He has utilized his network of contacts to help me get a great job in investment management. This is my thank you.
This is for Sury's advanced course in Applied Portfolio Mgmt. IMO, the course was the most valuable and applicable class I've ever taken. It's a challenge, but you get out of it what you put in. I'd say the best part were the capital market briefs we had to prepare and be ready to present in each class--stressful, but def kept you on your toes.
Took Surys investment course and was the best decision I made. Was hoping to take his 135 but heard he's teaching in SoCal now. Bummer. Guess I'll have to go to grad school at USC lol. Seriously though, great class and great prof.
I'm in the MBA program now, but took Sury's 124 when I was an undergrad. He has a well deserved reputation as a tough prof, but his course made every other fin course I took easy. The boot camp nature has prepped me for grad school and the internships I've had. Definitely take if you can.
Two words: The best. I believe he's now in So Cal. Its a loss for SCU.
This prof is the BEST! I learned more from him than anyone else in my life. This is no joke. I owe my career to Sury. Thanks you Sury and thank you SCU!
Sharath Sury is one of my favorite professors. His course is a MUST for any serious Finance student. Professor Sury no longer at Santa Clara, and i'm sure the students and staff are wishing he was back! Sharath Sury, like his father Manda, provide real world lessons that are second to none among today's instructors.
The best prof and course that I've taken so far. Professor Sharath Sury was instrumental in my understanding of finance.
Professor Sharath Sury was the best finance professor at SCU with out question. Although his course was challenging, Mr. Sury's method of instruction definitely helped prepare me for my future.
For a subject that i struggled with, Professor Sharath Sury made finance less intimidating by using real life examples and keeping us involved in the class. Lots of work, and very demanding, but well worth the effort as it helped my overall understanding of topics that were once frustrating. Professor Sury, I am grateful!
Class was a killer! But Mr. Sury made good on his promise to give us a solid understanding of finance. Wish i could sign up for his 135 class!
Any student that took Sharath Sury will say that this is one of the most difficult courses of their undergrad experience. They will also tell you, however, that Professor Sury presented the material in such a way that allowed the students to relate finance in everyday scenarios. Kudos to SCU and Sharath Sury for providing a quality education.
Not as difficult as statistics, but any course taught by Sharath Sury will be extremely challenging. The knowledge gained from Prof Sury has proved to be very useful. Highly recommend.
Prof Sury was totally the best. I'm signing up for spring quarter now and regret not taking him last year before he left for SoCal. I'm lobbying the admin to create another Sury-type course we'll see if it happens. Or maybe I'll just transfer to So cal lol. Oh should say I took Sury's 124 class and he helped me land an internship last summer..
Prof Sharath Sury was very helpful throughout the semester and made himself available to answer students' questions after class. Im hoping Mr. Sury returns to SCU soon!
OMG this finance course is difficult, and without Mr. Sury i'm not sure if i would have absorbed as much information as i did. This is by far one of the best professors i've ever taken and he truly cares about the quality of education that his students receive. If you ever have the chance to take a course by Sharath Sury, I encourage you to do so!
The lessons taught by Sharath Sury in this course are priceless. The knowledge gained remains useful in the real world of finance and i am glad i had the chance to take his Finance 124 class.
Sharath Sury is an expert at wealth management and was key in my understanding of finance. Very glad to have met Mr. Sury and taken his 124 course, and i hope to take another one of his courses in the near future.
The level and quality of instruction given by Professor Sharath Sury is second to none. I took Mr. Sury for both my 124 and 135 finance classes, and i'm grateful i had the opportunity to do so before he left Santa Clara.
Prof. Sury's course is hard and at times the class is frustrating, but he is more than willing to assist after class. He helped me gain a deeper understanding of the procedures used for recording and allocating assets. I wish Sharath Sury was still teaching the 135 course at Santa Clara!
One of the most difficult courses that i've taken was Sharath Sury's 124 class, but its an absolute must take for any serious finance student. Prof. Sury will prepare you with a solid and strong foundation for 135.
This is one of the most intense classes you can sign up for. Sharath Sury is one of the best professors to teach it.
By far the most important class and most influential prof I've ever had. As I graduate, I look back to what I've learned and I e never had anyone have as positive an impact on me and my career as prof Sury. I know sounds over the top, but this class was responsible for the success and incredible job I'll be starting in NYC. Def take this class.
I took Prof Sury's MBA Applied Portfolio Management course and sat in on his endowment investment course and found them to be totally valuable. I just landed a position as the Assistant CIO to a multi billion dollar endowment and similar to a previous post on here, I credit it to what I learned in 696. It's a tough course, but worth the effort.
Absolutely recommend both 124 and 135 as a cominaion. Just heard that he will be teaching in southern California in the Fall. Bummer for SCU, though rumor is that he's being asked to come back.
He's at SDSU. Just had first class session. He's great and seems to really know his stuff, though a bit fast. Quirky sense of humor, but keeps us entertained.
By far one of the best profs I've had at SDSU. He totally cares for his students, gives us review sessions and cann clearly tell his passion for his students. He is a bit fast, though so you need to keep up. Weird as it sounds, I love coming to class. It doesn't hurt that he's good to look at too.
Prof Sury will keep you challenged, excited, and motivated in class. You can tell that he is not only expert in the field but that he genuinely loves teaching and helping students learn the subject. Totally recommend this class.
Best Professor Ever. Brings industry knowledge, very engaging. You won't get bored and will learn the most.
