a very lively teacher
charming
confusing...a nice person, but rather confusing.
i cried tears of pain the first day of class, and wept bloody tears of joy the last day. . . but all said and done she did teach me how to write descriptively.
she was nice, but she failed to explain enough, then expected too much for her amount of explanation. she was confusing as mad, like i got lost many a time in that class, and her explanations were no help to my cause. no help.
very nice funny...but her explanations for homework are terrible.
way above everyone's heads

Confusing but overall, not that difficlut. Needs to explain things a littlee better..Cancelled class alot too, which was nice being that it was an 8 am.
Wonderful instructor, very helpful and very understand! She knows her stuff.
not clear on assignments. only one paper
Class was very confusing, got an A though. Assignments were very silly, and didnt make any sense
High expectations, hard grader, but funny and interesting. Learned alot. I'd take a class with her again.
She is a paranoid loon, but she is fun. Her lectures are off the wall, and her grading is all over the place.
Be prepared to talk politics and current issues. You won't have that many assignments so do them. Only 1 paper which she will help you with. Be prepared to do some research. Overall not really hard but confusing at times.
She's very political but also very hip! She likes to have interesting discussions and is fair in her grading. She won't give you a grade so be sure and do your work but she's fair. She's nice, cute and refreshing. If you're a conservative you might not like her, she's totally liberal.
Be prepared to do lots of reading, lots of writing. Class discussions are surprisingly fun, interesting, even when the reading is so boring. Young, cute, nice, a little hard at times, but totally worth it.
Loved her!
this lady is a complete feminist who only cared about political debates. if i wanted to learn about the 2004 election i would have taken a political science class.
shes not clear on assignments and what to do for them and makes you read a whole lot and it doesnt seem like she ever goes over any of it, i think shes a nice person but i dont enjoy her class. She seems very unorganized and grading makes no sense whatso ever.
extremely unorganized, unclear. what was supposed to be a survey of american literature has turned into a survey on huck finn. workload is heavy in comparison with other lit surveys. on a positive note, she puts a lot of emphasis on your thinking as opposed to scholars' opinions of the work. likeable as a person, but frustrating as a teacher.
will work your butt off, but totally cool
interesting, nice, fun,
Enthusiastic. Keeps class interesting. Workload uneven. Starts out light and ends up heavy, but she will help you every step of the way. Gives alot of useful advice about writing papers.
CRAZY but a nice person, overloads with work, to much reading and too many papers, unclear with her message, hard to stay concious in her class! focuses to much on one subject while neglecting others found on the test.
Liberal feminist all the way. If you can get past that, she can teach you a lot. She likes to "tear a work of literature apart" and look deeply into it. You will do well if you attend and do all your reading assignments. In your papers, show that spark of understanding that she's looking for; what a character is really all about. I made an A.
Not my favorite teacher. She waits until the end of the semester to make you write the paper. She also talks more about privacy and surveillance than English! I cried a lot after this class! Very stressful!
I took her for Am Lit 1 & 2. She's really easy to talk to and makes the literarture fun, even the stuff I thought I would hate. I loved going to class. She expects alot. I did hate the critical notes, but I have to admit it made me keep up with the reading and prepared me for class -- all in all they turn out to be an easy chuck of your grade.
This was my favorite class. She's a really good thorough teacher. The workload is heavy but the tests come straight from lecture notes. She's very interesting and certainly knows her stuff. Go to class and pay attention, and do critical notes and get an A!
Not a fun class at all!!!
EH225: This class takes up way too much time to be an undergradutate level class. Suggestion is to find another professor. If I could do the class over, I would take someone that doesn't require you to write a paper every single week or require you to read 50 pages of literature every single night....Enough said!
Anyone who says that Ms. Hartmann is a hard teacher or an unfair teacher has no basis fo saying so. Before you take this class learn how to read and write and you will do fine. She is more than willing to help with anything. She even gives out her home phone number to Christ's sake! Pay attention and ask questions when you are confused. Make an 'A'
Good teacher
Totally breaks down lit so its easy to understand! Brings myths to life. Papers come right out of lectures. Fair grader. AWESOME teacher-way smart-made me even WANT to go to class on Sundays!
Expects you to know reading material BEFORE coming to class, unlike the other professors who just read the text to you. Insightful, interesting, and interested in the students.
Took a class that she co-taught with Coker. Best class ever! She does have high expectations, but it IS college, not high school. If you are not there to learn, you are free to leave. She is insightful, interesting, involved and fair. I would recommend her to anyone interested in actually LEARNING MATERIAL rather than coasting through a class.
Classical Mythology counts for English or Philosophy credit. Ms. Hartmann co-taught this class with Ms. Gandy. Spring 2010-Ms. Hartmann is very fun, nice, and easy. Attend class, read assigned readings, take notes, and study. Used Ovid~Metamorphosis, The Odyssey and The Illiad by Homer as textbooks. Other texts @ USA Online. 2 tests & 2 papers.:0)
Had her for Mythology with another professor. She rocked the Iliad and Odyssey! But it's not kids stuff, either. Be prepared to do some thinking. Great Prof, helpful outside class, easy to talk to, recommend!
The class is Greek and Roman Culture. She focuses pretty heavily on Greece and only Greece. When the class finally rolls around to Rome, She discusses how Greece influenced Rome. I have to give her an A in Greece culture and a solid F in Roman Culture.
shes really good BUT study guides she gives are long and confusing. i take good notes though, so i just re-read all my notes a few times before each test an got an A. she wants you to do outside reading- but she doesnt test on anything she hasnt spoken about, so you can get by w/o reading. she drops the lowest of 4 exam scores :)
Awesome class! I agree more Greece than Rome, but her lectures are lively and the class was fun which made me do better on the tests.
Def. more Greece than Rome. You don't need a textbook, all the readings are posted online, and she gives you study guides. IN short, this works like any history class: come to class, pay attention, take notes, study, boom.
She is a wonderful professor, and very educated about the subjects. Her study guides were like 200-375 names/terms long. The tests were not that bad if you listen and go to class. The study guides though...that'll give you a coronary.
She was awesome!! If you are lucky enough to take her please do!!! She will be tough if you dont pay attention but she wants you to get the material and ask things. She is funny and makes it easy to understand things.
Fun teacher! Make sure you go to class. It seems like you won't miss anything but then you really miss alot. Very helpful too!
Very unorganized. Not clear on essay directions. Goes of topic constantly and rarely gives enough time for a well written paper to be done in. Avoid this teacher
AWESOME!! I loved her!! She's very enthusiastic and knows what she's talking about. Very clear and very helpful. Every class was interesting. I would take this class over and over. I'll take any class she teaches!!
Great class! She grades very easy and if you miss turning in any assignment she let's you turn it in so you wont have a bad grade. She might be a tad unorganized and seem all over the place sometimes but she is a very good teacher. I enjoyed taking her class!
Great Class! I learned a lot and English is my second language! Easy to work professor but of course you have to do your work! She review every paper and class homework and do one one one meetings for your final research paper! Love it!
She is probably one of the worst professors I've had. She assigns huge amounts of readings every single night not even considering that you are only taking this course as a requirement and have loads of other homework to do. Her grading is completely subjective and doesn't tell you how she wants things done, just expects you to read her brain.
Mrs. Hartmann is a sweet lady, but do not expect to receive a reply if you email her.
I would not take her again. Not clear on assignments but she tries to work with you.
Mrs. Hartmann is a very different professor but I loved her. She is always willing to work with you because she wants you to do well in her class.I am horrible with writing papers but I have done well in her class. Would recommend her!
Embarrassingly indulgent in shoehorning her political hobbyhorses in class. Did you know Beowulf has thinly veiled homoerotic undertones and that Grendel is a gay man? Or that contemporary "wage gap" politics have a place in feudal England? This is the Buzzfeed tier analysis you will hear in class. Essay directions are unclear.
I strongly did not like hartmann because she never made any paper we did clear. She never mad any sense during lecture and always throws her political views into everything. If you get annoyed by politics being in everything then do not take her!
Extreme Left-Wing political views and makes sure you know it. Ridicules anyone who doesn't agree with her take on politics. This is a literature class, so I'm not sure why we have to hear about politics so much.
Her class consisted of her talking the entire class, she does tell some nice stories. We used the book maybe 3 times to read chapters. She gave me the same grade on all of my papers with the same comment.. She takes attendance. PAPERS ARE YOUR ONLY SOURCE OF DETERMINING YOUR GRADE.. there are no other grades Doesnt give extra credit
I took the class online for the summer due to Corona. She would disappear for weeks at a time. She did not respond to any emails until finals week. We only got through week 3 worth of material. Final week she uploaded three homework assignments, a test, and a paper on Thursday and they were due Sunday. Worst experience I have had a South.
Hartmann rambles about things that have little to know relation to what we're supposed to be learning. She doesn't make it clear what we're even supposed to be doing. She makes you do a million discussions but doesn't put grades in for any of them. She posts assignments very sporadically and does not follow a set schedule
Lectures consist of rambling then being assigned an assignment. Lectures often cancelled by professor. Assignments never feel clear. Grading is done very rarely. Probably should never teach an online class again.
I would not recommend this class to anyone. We are on week 13 of the semester and she has not graded either of the 2/4 papers. I have reached out numerous times this semester I have never received an email back. She rambles about completely unrelated topics and goes over quite often. If you do take this class, just be prepared to struggle.
I wish I could give a lower rating. This has by far, been the worst experience I have had. Extremely unorganized. Rambles. Cancels class. At week 13 in semester and still no grades. Doesn't communicate AT ALL. I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone, no matter the learning style you work best with.
Mrs. Hartmann is a nice lady, but probably the worst teacher Ive ever had. NEVER responds to emails and always cancels class very last minute. Extremely inconsiderate and frustrating. We only had like 4 papers all semester but they were all so dumb. Do not take her.
Mrs. Hartmann is very nice but she is horribly unorganized. She's completely unreachable outside of class. We are a week away from the end of the semester and she has no grades in for any of the work we've done. She often cancels class on short notice, like within a minute of when class is supposed to start. She does not communicate with us at all.
This is the worst teacher I've ever had to deal with. She doesn't respond to emails and and rambles nonstop during her lecture time. She cancels her mandatory 8am classes at the very last minute, sometimes she cancels after class was supposed to start. I would never take a class by her again. She is also ridiculously unorganized.
She doesn't put in any grades until the very end of the semester. She will stay on the same topic for weeks and then gets behind and tries to rush you at the end of the class. She doesn't explain in good detail at all so if you don't feel like you are the good at English DO NOT TAKE HER!!!! she's not organized when it comes to canvas.
I ignored all the reviews on this professor & i wish i didnt. Please listen & SAVE yourself from this class!!!! If you cannot stand to listen to someone ramble on & on about the same topic for weeks do not take her. I have learned absolutely nothing & its been a month into the semester. She will also hold you until the last minute of class.
Attendance is mandatory, sometimes the way she speaks about students seem needlessly insulting, but she is a great professor. Very knowledgeable and I always feel as though I am leaving the class more knowledgeable than when I entered.
Do not take this prof. She talks about the same thing for weeks and rambles every class. Her lectures are so boring and as much as she tries she does not make the topic of the papers clear. She is a very tough grader and does not put in grades until the very end.
Do not take Hartmann's class! She is horrible. You only have four papers throughout the entire semester and she does not put in the grades until AFTER finals week! She'll say she'll post stuff for an assignment or grades and wait until absolute last minute to do it. Worst professor I've had this semester, if you can avoid this class, please do.
Although Hartmann is a very kind woman, her class will undeniably stress you out. We spend endless amounts of time on one topic that produces little to no understanding. She is not easy to reach and will expect things of you despite not laying the foundation. I enjoy her presence, but her teaching style is unbearable.
She rambles on and on for weeks about the same topics and her lectures are boring. She locked our grades so we can't see them and assigns homework like she's our only class. She gives hours worth of homework that's due in less than a week and says she'll let us know things and doesn't tell us until the day before.
She assigns a ton of reading, but that's to be expected in a lit class. She can sometimes ramble or get on a tangent during lectures. Overall a pretty easy professor if you do the reading she assigns and just put in the work for class. I liked the literature she chose, and her interpretations of the material was very interesting. Tests were easy.
I know a lot of people in my class didn't but I liked her. There was some weeks that were heavier than others but it paid off. The only complaint is she keeps you to the last minute she isn't the most organized and tech savvy but she does care about her students and is very understanding. Attendance does matter in this class.
"Extra credit" was actually mandatory and worth 5% of the overall grade. "Short final essay" is a minimum of 5 pages. Teacher is VERY disorganized and the tests are ridiculous
Will assign so much homework and so many stories you have to read with barely any time to do them. Doesn't answer emails, and she doesn't tell you your grade until the end of the semester. Doesn't prepare you for the exams and throws you into them. Will ramble on for an hour in class about nonsense. If you're not a good writer, don't take her.
Do not take this teacher for World Lit 2. She put zeros in for our grades and didn't change them until a couple weeks before finals, doesn't let you see your total grade in the class until you finish the semester, assigns so much work while you have to study for her tests, and get mad if your interpretation of the readings aren't the same as hers.
Too much homework, too much reading, very disorganized. Not many assignments but the ones she gives are vague. Harsh grader. Would never do again. Do not recommend.
Very poorly organized course. Thought it was just me until I checked the reviews, and do not know if I have ever seen a professor with such awful reviews. There was not a single redeeming quality about Mrs. Hartmann's course, and if she ever reads these I strongly suggest she reflects on how she is teaching.
I do not think she would get hired if she was applying to be a professor all over again. So bad I walked out of class with my remaining class skips to use and never returned. Awful, awful class and professor. Probably a pretty nice person outside of class, but very strange and borderline rude in class.
She really was a nice person outside of the classroom. My main issue with her was that everything was so all over the place. Each lecture was different (and not in a good way). I always felt so lost when I left class even though I paid attention. Her tests always had some pretty odd questions that were either extremely specific or far too broad.
If you want an easy class, DO NOT take this class. She is a very hard grader and confusing. Unless you are genuinely interested in reading old text, i do not recommend it. She assigns weekend homework aswell and the class it not worth it. save yourself.
She did not follow the syllabus. Gave materials for class, but other topics not regarding what we were told to review were in lecture. Very passive & borderline rude. Late every day, when a student would walk in after her she would not put their attendance down, though we'd been waiting for her. Weird and vague racial remarks about our texts.
Would never take her class again. Never answers emails, borderline rude, and walks in late every day. She does not follow her syllabus and always gets behind classes because she goes off topic so much in lecture. Random statements from lectures weeks ago are on tests and makes weird, sometimes makes statements that are racial or against religion.
