Amazing! Becker is hilarious, interesting, and very helpful. My writing improved exponentially in this class. A good amount of reading, but it's all current and relevant. A lot of participation, more of a seminar than lecture if the class is active. 3 2-3 pg essays, one 4-5 final paper and an easy exam. Will quiz if she thinks people arent reading.
She is one of my favorite professors! You have to read A LOT but she makes discussions really interesting and enjoyable. I had so much fun this semester--she's hilarious and will get you EXCITED about reading! I'd recommend taking her whenever you can. Be prepared to read though--and laugh!!
She was a really great teacher. Very helpful and engaging. You have to read everything and do your work but if you do this, you'll be great!
Lively
give her that pepper lol. Very nice lady
I LOVED her. She was a teacher that thrived on hearing her students speak. You have to do the reading, but she makes the discussions so engaging, and the reading isn't too difficult, that it truly is enjoyable. The 3 essays are not terrible. The most was 6 pages. She's willing to help anyone who asks. I would DEFINITELY take other classes by her.
Professor Becker is great. Her personality is so lively. You do need to read to do the weekly ideas. There are only three papers so everything counts.
She is a wonderful and very quirky person. Her thoughts and interpretations are of some literature is not the most conventional, but that is what makes her class interesting. There is a lot of required reading, but it is enough to handle. She is certainly not your typical professor, and that is why I would love to take her class again!
Easily my favorite professor at Towson so far. Her class is engaging and very informative. There is a lot of reading, but she picks fantastic literature and makes it interesting. If I could, I would take another of her classes in a heartbeat!
Very nice, awesome professor. A lot of reading though, and come prepared because she throws out random quizzes. The papers were easy, she's a fair grader. A little obsessed with Jack Kerouc hahah.
Becker is very helpful and very animated. Discussions every day on assigned readings. If you read and talk in class you should be fine. She doesn't always seem to take attendance BUT she knows who's in class. Participation is important. Papers are basically only assignments. Make an effort and ask for help and you'll do well. LOTS OF WRITING.
This is my second time taking Becker and I LOVE her! She's super fun in class and always tries to work with you as long as it's something reasonable. I wouldn't say that she's easy but she appreciates your efforts and participating in class is always helpful!
Professor Becker is my favorite professor that I've had at Towson so far. She's hilarious, engaging and super helpful when it comes to choosing paper topics. Even if you don't love English, I would absolutely recommend taking her Ethnic American Literature course to fulfill the Diversity and Difference Core.
Easily my favorite teacher at Towson. She's funny, quirky, energetic, knowledgeable, passionate and gies very energetic discussions. Lots of reading, but only a few essays. Easy grader. Do the reading and you'll be fine (and mitigate the frequency of pop quizzes). Some very good readings, some boring, but her teaching style made it all fun anyway.
Great professor. So adorable and happy lol. If you want a good grade, MAKE SURE YOU PARTICIPATE. Even if you didn't read, ALWAYS make sure you offer an opinion, or whatever. just say something. She's not a hard grader and she's very flexible w/ essays. She might get an attitude w/ you and call you out if you're sleep or texting, but she's cool.
Amazing class; will actually broaden your horizon. Prof Becker is great. Very helpful and always has wonderful ideas. Only take this class if you're up for reading and writing, though don't get overwhelmed, it is not difficult at all. You must participate, she is all for communicating with one another. This class actually improves one's writing.
Professor Becker is awesome! She is so insightful and full of life. You can automatically tell she loves teaching and loves English, especially literature. I took this class because I am an English minor and I learned so much. Be prepared to rent and read A LOT of books though. The class is well worth it though, and the essays are not difficult!

Sharon is really cool and quirky, she appreciates creative and "out there" ideas. She is a tough grader for a 200 class though, although she's not strict on perfect MLA which is nice. 4 3pg papers and a final. you will need all the books, they're all like $4 on amazon though.
Becker is cool & smart, but the books we had to read were just awful & dull. Becker's a bit of a tough grader for a 200 level class. 4 3-page papers & a final. Be warned: she WILL take off points if you just have a few lines on the 3rd page & she'll know if you fluff up your paper with large quotes & little substance. That said, she IS a good prof.
She's adorable in a fun and quirky way! She actually makes class entertaining. I would definitely take her again.
Really good at facilitating class discussion. She will always honestly consider your ideas an her enthusiasm for the material is obvious. The readings she picked were all interesting and enjoyable.
We read a lot of books I would not normally have chosen on my own, so to broaden your horizon and books read list, this class is good for that. She is funny, makes the class lighthearted while discussing some important issues. EVERYONE is welcome and encouraged to talk, it is all about PARTICIPATION and then class runs smoothly.
Becker is great. She's a wonderful discussion enabler, keeps it flowing naturally even with a tough crowd. Her expectations are clear and reasonable. She's funny and engaging and respects that students are taking more than just her class. She wants the experience to be enjoyable and worthwhile for everyone. I would take her again in a heartbeat.
She was my favorite professor by far. Her lectures are fun and overall she's a great person. She's an easy grader and hard not to love.
Loved Professor Becker! She gets that everyone is forced to take this course and works to make it as painless as possible. Gives two unexcused absences to use whenever you want. Her class is focused all around discussion and she really wants to hear what you have to say. Clear rubrics and more than willing to help you on your papers if you ask.
Professor Becker is great. The readings are very easy and the class is based around discussion. She never outright says you are wrong so she creates an environment that encourages you to talk. She understands we are taking other classes and her expectations are reasonable. If I had to take another English class, I'd definitely take her again.
She is very kind and will respond to all answers respectfully even if they are wrong.
Class is mostly discussion but the topics are relevant and easy to form opinions on. She accepts all answers and will help guide you to what you want to say. Papers are an ok length. She usually pairs students with other for group work which isn't too bad. Grades are mostly based from the essays. Textbook is NEEDED but very easy to read.
Her class wasn't too bad overall. We read comic books which was really easy. The readings went by quick. Not much homework. 3 papers, 1 readers response, and final is a group project that isn't hard at all. She is funny and entertaining but likes to make you think about the story. I definitely recommend taking her for ENGL 102
Prof. Becker has her students read unusual books, making this class different from a typical literature class. For the most part, I enjoyed the content of the class, but her grading was unclear, which became frustrating. The majority of the papers involve creative writing and she often provides positive feedback, yet most students still get a B.
Professor Becker was my favourite Professor at Towson. She managed to turn every thought by every student into something great and worthy of discussion. She's knowledgeable, smart af, with an eclectic fashion sense and fun about it. She's kind of an open book, which makes things fun, as long as you've read the book. Her exams are tough, but fair.
Professor Becker is definitely one of the best professors I have so far. She does not give tests but pop quizzes. Final is a group project and she is very friendly. Books are really out there but worth the read to pass.
Professor Becker is a very good professor that cares about you doing well in her class. Her class style is different from many other english classes but that makes it interesting. She wants you to do well and covers all material in class. Its lots of papers but if you follow the guidelines you will be fine. Very good teacher.
Best english class I've ever taken. As long as you put the effort in you'll get a good grade and she really cares about her students doing well as long as they care too. Also is really funny and makes class enjoyable.
Super cool class about comics. She is super helpful and has a really fun class. If you put in the work then you will get the good grade
Love her only home a work was to read short stories and a small paper at the end of the book goes over all story meanings in class
For a freshman this class was fairly easy. A lot of reading, but they were short and interesting stories. I suggest to borrow the books from the library for free instead of renting or buying them. There were a response essay we had to do after each book min 300 words. No homework. One pop quiz. Participate!!!!!!
This class is fairly easy but the professor doesnt like giving out As, and makes excuses about why she gave you B instead. The comics she assigns are easy to read but boring. I wouldnt take her again because she grades like its an advanced English class even though the assignments are not hard at all.
The class grade depends on a handful of papers. The prompts she provides are often lengthy and unclear, and despite telling us to respond in our own words and without specific structure, it is nearly impossible to get above a B on them.
Do not take her lol. She is a really hard grader and your grades based off of a few very long essays. Its hard to get anything more than a B on her papers. Her prompts are very long and unclear.
She's a great teacher & gives good lectures. Her lecture sets are always engaging and makes you want to discuss and participate. She gives good feedback on papers and works with you to help you understand the prompts. There were 3 papers and toward the end of the semester she lets you fix one of your papers for a different grade. loved her so much!
Prof Becker is extremely charismatic and fun. She makes class interesting and exciting. However, she is very strict about attendance and she is a tough grader. Participation is expected but not required. The stories she makes you read are sometimes really long, boring, and hard to understand.
Professor Becker makes English fun! Everything we read was interesting and she respects and acknowledges everyone's input. The class is like a book discussion and her papers are always very unique. I thoroughly enjoyed going to class and I usually don't like English.
Professor Becker is a total rockstar. Want an interesting discussion full of tons of support from the professor? Take any of her courses. Want to be lazy and coast without reading, get lost. She's hands down my favorite professor of all time.
Dr. Becker is a very nice lady who makes it easy to participate in class but it is difficult to get an A in her class. Feedback can be hard to understand and sometimes the grading seems arbitrary. But overall a very nice and cool lady
We were required to read 4 Comic Books 4 Essay. Each essay you must go to the writing center or points would be deducted. You must participate in each class. Communicate with her via email or face to face, she is really understanding. Her grading is sort of tough. But the extra credit participant grade will help! Final was easy.
Encourages discussion among students, but does not leave you hanging. She is a bit unusual at first, but when you get to know her, she is great, and quite funny.
I really liked Professor Becker. She was really funny and cool. We had to get a book and read the readings and take notes some of the readings were challenging and long. But the essays were REALLY easy. She was also very caring and supportive of us during this pandemic which most of my professors were not. Best Professor for English TAKE HER!!!
Professor Becker was very understanding and wanted the best for her students. It is 1 weekly zoom meeting and 1 asynchronous discussion board posting. I recommend her x100!
She's a great teacher, and is very fun to talk to. She tried to relate to the students, and I appreciated that. The class was basically discussion heavy, and you were graded on participation. Then there was a discussion post once a week. We used perusall occasionally as well as a course blog occasionally.
Professor Becker was great! This class was very discussion heavy but if you just read the books you will be fine. There were weekly discussion boards involving the text and participation mattered in class when talking about that week's reading. There was one very large, kind of open-ended project at the end but she helps along the way.
Prof. Becker was extremely nice and likes in-class discussion. There's a short reading to do before class every week, and you'll talk about it for most of class. For a writing class, there wasn't too much writing and she engages with student ideas well.
Shes a very funny lady. Makes classes fun & interesting by getting our opinion on what we wanna discuss. Classes are very discussion heavy, but super easy. Graded on an ongoing course blog.. just have to make 10 entries for entire semester. Allows you to redo/retake quizzes. Very lenient on due dates. Overall easy Professor, would recommend.
The biggest issue was with the few assignments and very harsh grading within the course. She is a very funny professor however our conversations in class would rattle off to things that are entirely not relevant to the course work being done at times. Caused a lot of confusion and threw a good majority of us out of focus including myself.
EXTREMELY unclear prompts. Professor Becker is a lovely person, classwork is a dream (3 readings for week topic) . However, if you want a clear rubric for essays or prefer logic over creativity do NOT take this course. On classwork, it is extremely manageable and fun, but the prompts for the 3 essays are killer though if you need structure.
This class is called "Semiotics: The Study of Signs". However, that is not what we learned about. Instead the class was solely focused on K-pop, which had nothing to do with the course. Professor Becker is also not the most organized person. Even after being asked numerous times for a syllabus, she finally made one the last couple weeks of class.
She is a fun and quirky professor but gives a lot of reading homework. That being said, the reading is the most you do really. In class there are discussions of the readings and a few papers scattered throughout the semester. If there is good discussions there are few pop quizzes. The final is a unessay project which you have to present. Take her!
Very fun person; her lectures are never boring. Had around 3 papers with creative & interesting prompts. Attendance is mandatory as we have class discussions every day about the assigned readings. Must buy both books, you discuss 1 or 2 stories per class. Participation is encouraged, but you can still pass w/o it. Final is a project of your choice!
Professor Becker is a really nice and understanding teacher but, it stressed me out how the class was only graded on a few things. Overall the class was pretty easy but if you are not creative you gotta get creative because these prompts for papers are not your typical essays.
She is a very nice person, but her class can be a bit annoying. Its called "Writing for a Liberal Education" but we didn't really do a lot of writing. In fact we never wrote one essay throughout the entirety of the class. I kinda wanted to learn how to improve my writing in terms of essays because that is the majority of how you write in college.
If you're not a K-Pop fan, avoid her semiotics class. The work wasn't difficult or heavy, it just felt like a waste of time. She is very caring and understanding towards her students though. If you need a light elective and you don't care too much about learning anything valuable, this is the class for you.
As a person, she was nice and accommodating. She valued all of our opinions and such. However, she is a little unorganized and grades on very few things yet those assignments are tedious. Her class was fun and listening to kpop was a great experience.
Becker is super fun and laid back. She liked participation but you won't be penalized for not speaking a lot. She also is super understanding and will work with you if you need help or extra time. The only bad thing was the final project which is a "creative" project and she doesn't give much direction but will still talk it through with you.
Dr. Becker is nice Does a good intro to reading short stories, but nothing groundbreaking. Very understanding about deadlines and seems to genuinely understand that students have lives outside of class, which is rare and important. Never needed it, but was nice knowing the grace was there. Great easy class if you need the credit. Slow grader.
When I first met Professor Becky I was pleasantly shocked. She is a fan of BTS so that may be a plus for some of you. The readings we use about subcultures are always interesting. It's not hard to get receive an A in her class. I would recommend her !!
Hardly any class time is spent on the 40+ pages of reading assigned each week. She has designed her coursework to have little to nothing to do with the subject. Take this if you enjoy K-pop but get in quick bc almost every professor in the department has received complaints. Great person, lots of deadline leeway, hours of K-pop. H o u r s.
I adore Becker, she's very caring and gives lots of leeway with assignments. Knowledgable on the subjects she teaches, and seems to actually enjoy it her classes. Can be very slow to grade but is not a harsh grader so it's not very stressful. Very easy to do well in her class, completing the assignments is all you need to do.
As many other people on here have said, it is a K-pop class. Unless you love K-pop, I would not recommend taking this class. You have to watch videos every week, and there is lots of tedious work for the class. A lot of the readings are also about K-pop. The class has so much potential, but the professor limits what's analyzed.
This class was awful to say the least ... I hate Kpop and being forced to listen to it as much as I did sucked! The class itself, I'd never take again but I would take a class by Professor Becker again because she was a great professor. She was a easy grader and she gave you freedom when it came to writing assignments.
Professor Becker is amazing and showed genuine care for students. She is relatable and funny, plus very understanding. You get a set amount of classes to miss and a pass to get an extension on any assignment. Get the textbook, read the stories, participate in class, and you will be okay. 2 papers, a leading class discussion, and final project.
This class is A BREEZE!! before this i could probably tell you nothing about kpop nor did i have an interest in it. Class is basically watching kpop videos and saying what we think they mean, also some korean history. Theres some readings and Stories youll have to read but.. its an english class.. so as expected. Take her for an easy A.
Unless you are a k-pop enthusiast please do not take. There are readings for each class that are around 30-50 pages each. She will randomly "assign" quizzes in class where you need to know things from the readings. The topics discussed in class are all social issues, most of which are controversial. It takes months to get papers back graded.
Very easy class in terms of material, the professor however, she is a horrible grader. Get ready to write your heart out about some random K-POP video or article and be hit with a B and some passive aggressive comments about how horribly you wrote. Other than her, the class will drive you insane if you don't like KPOP.
I know a lot of people don't like her because of the amount of Kpop you have to listen to and watch videos for... but that's the class you signed up for. I had a base knowledge of Kpop from friends but honestly you don't need any knowledge to get by in this class. There are two books in the class that you read and discuss. Overall loved her class!
The lecture were somewhat boring, but the class is very manageable, and the professor is very caring. If you show up, participate, and put forth some effort towards the work, you'll pass without much trouble.
She's very nice, but I got nothing out of her class. Sometimes she'll give a quiz or assign a paper, but as long as you read the articles every week you'll do fine. The class had no direction or purpose. If you're interested in K-pop or pop culture you'll like her a lot. I didn't learn anything meaningful from this class.
Quit while your ahead I dont care what anyone says she was a horrible professor she ALWAYS ASSIGNED 40 PAGES OF READING per class. her quizzes made absolutely no sense. don't get me wrong she's nice but the amount of work she gives for a core class is ridiculous. and if ur not a k pop Stan u probably won't enjoy this class at all very boring. 3/10
Professor Beckers gets a lot of backlash due to her love for K-Pop. Personally, it did not bother me. She's very kind, and she's a vibe. As long as you show up and participate, I think you'll be fine. There are some papers and pop quizzes, but nothing major to worry about.
Takes forever to grade, will assign 40+ pages of reading every week, pushes political views and ideoligy in her teaching and is not open at all to differing viewpoints. Way to much work and quizes make 0 sense. STAY AWAY
Dr. Becker is a fine professor who is very caring and funny. This class is mostly discussion based and reading stories. I assumed it was writing so if that's what you're looking for, I would NOT recommend this class for you. Not a bad class but one I skipped frequently because all we did was talk about stories.
Professor Becker was great!! Very friendly and never had an attitude when I would ask questions at the end of class.
Professor Becker is kind, supportive, and open to questions. She takes a while to grade, and feedback is limited. The class is K-pop themed, heavy on reading and discussion, light on writing. Assignments are easy, and she does a great job of including all students, even those unfamiliar with the topic.
Professor Becker is amazing. This class was so engaging and enjoyable. The class requires the purchase of books and reading. Notes aren't necessary. Go to class and read everything assigned. If you read everything it'll be easy. If you're introverted, you might not love this class with the amount of needed participation.
She's so diva. Please take her and this class. It's so interesting even if you don't like K-pop. She is so sweet and brings so much joy when she steps into the room. Lots of reading though, but it's all interesting, so no complaints! TAKE HER!!!
I stuttered through my entire final presentation and still got a good grade, take this class!
