Switch out if you can, the book that she makes you read (Popular Culture, by Freccero) is awful..
i don't think she's a bad person, she just has a very unique way of teaching.. she is very opinionated, and doesn't put up with any bull... be ready to listen..
Sweet teacher. If you don't like regular English, and want to watch movies take her class. Make sure you show up to class.
I love this class. Dr. Rowley makes things interesting and keeps it easy. We do lots of movie watching and class discussion that give us extra points. She is one of the nicest teachers I have ever had.
Dr. Rowley exhibits unbelieveable knowledge in class. Her grasp of the Old and Middle English language is phenominal. She made Beowulf sound beautiful (as read in Olde Eng.). it is true testament to her vivacious teaching style. yeah, hottie too!
weird lady... weird ways... sometimes a touch of goth.... very opinionated and isnt afraid to give her yours... out spoken.... nice one day... screwy the next
She's so funny and pretty and smart! What more could you want in a professor. DOn't listen to the underclassmen, they don't know what they're talking about. Sharon is the best! Take her for Early British Literature and for Chaucer. She's FUN!
This teacher is awesome. She deals out constructive criticism like there's no tommorow. I admit that I screwed off sometimes in her class, and she's not the easiest, but she knows so much its scary. Funny as hell.
There is no other word to describe her except Awesome! She's incredibly intelligent, she is very helpful, she doesn't put up w/crap from anyone, she has a great sense of humor, and she's the cutest. Take any class with her if you get the chance.
Approachable, helpful in all after class visits, knowledgeable about her class.
I took her Reseaching Dracula class it was a lot of work but the most I've ever learned from one person. She is soo kewl!!!
I have taken her twice and I would do it again in a heartbeat. She is probably the best teacher I have ever had... funny, caring, opinionated, and helpful. I love her, even though the class was the hardest I have ever taken!!
She is an awesome teacher. very nice
shes a good teacher, knows a lot, can sometimes be moody but get on her good side in the beginning and your fine. only 4 papers and a debate - pretty easy stuff. Just amke sure you read a little of the chapters, she gets very irritable when no one contributes to discussions
she really cares that you understand and will work with you all the time outside class to get you to understand if you need it! the class isn't too hard as long as you take the time to try to understand it and don't give up. i'd take her again when i get the chance! one of the best profs ever!
Great teacher, intelligent, she definitly knows her stuff. 4 papers, peer reviews and one debate. Make sure you read the chapters, she's very interested in student participation.
She's very smart, and a real quality professor. Very sweet lady. Don't be afraid to speak up in class, she's not like others who will call you out for being wrong. Has the cutest dorky laugh, too! A+ person!
Show up for class and read the material and you'll at least get a B of some sort
Rowley is one of the most awesome professors at CNU. She's funny, smart, and is always willing to help you out if you need it. Very difficult class, but she at least makes it interesting to go to!
Ok, so this class is boring. And its not really her fault, but sweet Jesus, it's boring and hard. Psychoanalyzing books is about last on the scale of things i want to do or care about. Everyone says you have to read, but I never read anything, and I have an A going into the final. So I'll see.
Even though this class is hard she tries to help every way she can. She's always willing to help out outside of class. She grades tough but fair. She doesn't take bull from people that don't try. Funny, charismatic, and helpful.
I liked her class...she always has something to say about everything, and the class turned out to be enjoyable. She has an eccentric, yet interesting background which makes her seem a little out there sometimes, but thats all fun if you let it be.
She is one of my favorite teachers here at cnu. She loves what she does, she made me enjoy coming to class. She does her best to explain things to you in many different ways, i felt more like i was taking a class with an older friend than a teacher. she's got a very interesting background and she'll make you laugh your ass off.
very eccentric and fun professor! you can tell she loves teaching and she loves class discussions, so don't be afraid to talk in her class. very open-minded and great professor to talk to outside of class. the class wasn't too hard overall, and the tests were fairly easy.
She's really great and always has interesting info to tell you
not that great
Very kooky (but in a good way) and fun. She's always interested to hear your opinions on anything, and as long as you participate, she'll like you.
She was a fun teacher, hard to understand class without a knowledge of greek mythology. Watch movies read fun stories, great class disscussion and about a one page paper due every week or so...she is a lot of fun and you will never be bored!
I loved Shakespeare til this semester. I haven't learned anything. She's intimidating and seems to have multiple personalities. I will NEVER recommend her for a prof and I really don't know how she's scoring as high as she has. BAD PROFESSOR
Fun teacher, a lot better than most other ULLC classes. You have to keep up on the readings (though they're not TOO long, usually), and you may go crazy near the end of the semester if you haven't been working on your big project all along... but she's entertaining, and if you write well it's a cinch. Not much HW besides reading.
One of the best English profs at CNU! I've taken 3 with her. Her fresh perspectives make me love everything she teaches. It's all discussion, so be willing to throw yourself out there. Tests are cake if you attend class, she'll help you on your papers, and you will always have a fun time in class. I would recommend her everytime.
I hated the vampire course topic, and it made writing the paper really hard. There is no point to the classes because the entire course is centered on the final paper, so the classes are very boring. Bring a laptop to keep yourself entertained.
I had Dr. Rowley for the vampires ULLC. She is incredibly knowledgeable about the subject. Definitely go to her office hours to talk to her about the paper, she will be very helpful! However, she does assume that everyone knows as much about vampires as she does. But, she's very nice, and helpful, it's just a hard class!
While I found her class on vampires really interesting, she always seems to have an attitude, which is a major turn-off. I also think that she has highly unrealistic expectations of her students, who are, for the most part, writing their first real research papers. However, she does offer enough other grades besides the paper to raise your grade.
Dr. Rowley is very knowledgeable and her passion for Shakespeare is somewhat contagious. In our set-up, we had a long paper worth 50% of the grade instead of a final. Participation is 20% of the grade so you neeeeed to add input probably at least once a class period. Overall, I had a good experience in her class.
One word: awesome. She makes you want to learn more. She makes Chaucer exciting. There is no one else like her on that campus.
In one word: Engaging
I'm an English major and I still found this class ridiculously hard. She would be better off teaching a graduate level class. We only had 4 papers and all of the topics were sci-fi (something I DO NOT like). Avoid if you can.
Rowley gave opinions of students & professors in a very unprofessional manner & was completely unwilling to help me by arranging times to meet outside of her normal office hours which other classes barred me from attending. The class had nothing to do with Literary Theory but rather Marxist & Freudian theories. Superiority complex wasnt fun either.
This is one of the most difficult classes I have ever taken at CNU. I still have no idea how I managed to get a B. She speaks way over your head and can be very patronizing. I dreaded this class.
Online quizzes & two group performances saved my grade. The final paper is 40% of your final grade and she gives little indication of what she is expecting in it. I wrote a paper that would have easily been a B paper in any other class, but not in her's apparently.
Had her for Arthurian Legend. Her entire class consists of discussions. No grades except for participation points, discussion boards(3 of them), exams and 1 paper. So not much to work with. You HAVE to read the books or else you will fail the exams (which are made up entirely of essays). She doesn't hand out A's. But the class is interesting!
Dr. Rowley is nice. I enjoyed her class but she does tend to snap at people randomly. She will go off on tangents irrelevant to the subject but you can tell she is passionate about what she talks about.
She was nice and casual in person, but she does not take excuses. Very difficult class that required a lot of reading. I hated this class but more because the subject was boring than the professor- she just didn't really help counter that. She makes you want to succeed, though. I enjoyed her little tangents and desire to hear student opinion.
Definitely a love-her-or-hate-her kind of professor. I happen to love her. Extremely intelligent, kooky, and passionate about the subject matter. Very helpful with assignments--go to her office hours. She grades very hard but that's because she provides you with so many resources for help. I've taken four classes with her and plan on taking more.
This class has a LOT of reading, with 6 online quizzes and 3 one page papers. The class itself is pretty easy, but you HAVE TO READ. She tells you everything you need to know, you just have to really pay attention. TAKE NOTES. She's always willing to help, but how she helps you isn't always helpful.
I thought I wanted to minor in English literature… until I had this professor. I found the subject matter really boring and she did not make it any more interesting. It also didn't help that she acted like a know-it-all if you ask a question. Unless you're really set on becoming an English lit major/minor, avoid her and her classes at all costs.
I really believe if you go into Prof. Rowley's class with the right attitude, you will succeed. I didn't do that. She is a very educated, interested lady who truly loves what she does. However, she does not give you gold stars just for trying. You have to earn your grade. And it's a lot of work. So if you're ready to work, get ready for Rowley.
Dr. Rowley is both the best and most terrifying professor ever. She's extremely smart, funny, and no-nonsense. She's very understanding and accessible. Just do the reading and you'll pass, but believe me, she'll know if you don't keep up, and you'll regret it. She makes boring stuff interesting though. Buy your textbook!
Dr. Rowley is incredible, but she definitely gives a lot of readings to do, and if you don't do them, you just don't do well. Otherwise, she's a fountain of knowledge and an incredible person who's always willing to help. If you can take her class and be prepared to actually learn something, do it!
I'm a senior and this 200 level class is the hardest class I've taken here. Studying wont do any good, she nitpicks and finds the most arbitrary reasons possible to dock points, and will shame you in class if you ask a 'dumb' question. She is very particular about how you write, but contradicts herself about what she wants, and you'll fail for it.
I had her several times, and I so wish I had not. By the third time, I DREADED going. She made a classmate cry for asking what she considered a 'dumb' question. Everyone was afraid to speak up since she would chew people out in front of the class. No rhyme or reason to her moods. You can't deny she's crazy smart and knows her field, though.
This professor will be extra tough on you to make you "prove" you want to be an English major. If she doesn't think you should be there, you will not get a good grade. I flat out failed my first exam with her, and her comments were less than constructive. My writing did improve as a result of her class, but I will never take with her again. Ever.
I am in the process of retaking this class with her because I dropped a full letter grade the first time for not participating to her standards. I am also beginning to fear failing this class again because nothing is good enough for her. Highest grade I've received all semester is an 80. Do not recommend.
Definitely my least favorite professor. The readings we do are interesting, but she makes you prove to her youre supposed to be there and specifically likes to scrutinize freshman. Her mood is random; catch her on a bad day she gets on you about dumb questions. She also likes to ramble during class sometimes. Shes very intelligent though.
She believes that C is an average student, so a majority of people will receive between a 70 and 80 for their final grade. Although she is passionate about the information, she nitpick and docks off many points for small mistakes. She answers questions and grades assignments vaguely leaving confusion as to how the grade came to be.
My entire class struggled though the semester. The readings are often difficult to comprehend, but make sure you try to read them because participation is a sizable grade and Rowley doesn't appreciate it when students don't come prepared. She throws shade too when student's are meeting her standards. She is also a very tough grader. Good luck.
I am begging you dont take Professor Rowley. I have never cried so much in a class. She is hateful and mean. I give every class at CNU my ALL and she tore me down constantly throughout the semester. Before writing this I had to take a while to calm down before writing something so I could process how I feel. Avoid at ALL costs.
Dr. Rowley is the hardest professor I have taken at CNU. She does not care how you feel in the slightest. I think the hardest part of this class is that you have to write a paper she likes. No matter how good it is, if she does not like it she will fail you with no remorse. This is my first time submitting a rate my professor. I felt like I had to.
I had Rowley for my second year writing seminar. Take her if you want to spend the entire semester crying at her absolutely destroying your hard work. She called my first paper weak and continued blatant disrespect towards students throughout the semester. Gave me a 0 on a paper and asked if I read the instructions. SWITCH IF YOU HAVE HER
She is BY FAR the worst prof I've had. She loses her patience in class, she's super strict, and intimidating. She also gives confusing directions/assignments and when you don't understand she doesn't clarify things, and she docks points over anything. Her tests are hell on Earth because of this but they're worth a ton of your grade. DO NOT TAKE HER
I loved Professor Rowley! The papers were tough, especially the final research paper, but she gave me help whenever I needed it and cared a lot about my success. I am not the best writer and I did not expect to do well in this class, but thanks to Professor Rowley I was able to finish the semester with a decent grade. I highly recommend her!!
Very dry. She makes the class hard for no reason and assigns too much reading. Also, she acts nice but if you disagree with something she can sometimes make you feel wrong for having that opinion. If you have to take her class- im sorry.
At first, this class was fine, until I began to pick up on Dr. Rowley's subtle rudeness. Eventually, it got to the point where it was obvious, belligerent, and disagreeing with any of her literary opinions was a felony. Every classmate I asked had experienced her rudeness. Take any other teacher. I only did well because this is my major.
She is very opinionated and definitely is condescending if you don't think the same way as she does which can be quite frustrating if you have a hard time sharing in class. She isn't clear always and that made the papers really tough because they were so abstract and not clear.
I've never felt so put down by a professor. Her directions are unclear and she's absolutely rude about anything she doesn't agree with. As a freshmen put immediately into a level 200 class here she made me feel like all my previous work and skills don't amount to anything. edit: she's not accommodating and calls out people with concentration issues
As many other people have said, Professor Rowley is extremely rude to anyone who doesn't agree with her. At the beginning of the semester, she explained that anyone could participate in class and should not be scared of speaking up. However, she continually puts people down for their observations and many people become too scared to speak.
The class I took was a little different from most of Dr. Rowley's classes, as it was an interdisciplinary course. I had been expecting a more history oriented class than a literary-oriented one, but even so I still enjoyed it. Be warned, her classes are participation heavy, and if you don't do the readings you won't pass. Work hard, and you're good
Dr. Rowley is a character. She is clearly passionate about literature, but she is intense and does not like opinions other than her own. She grades super harshly and expects people in an intro class to be a full-blown English major. She tends to put down students that she disagrees with or she views as not worthy. If you can avoid her class, do.
Cannot put into words how much I loathe this professor as a human being. To say that she is rude would be a HUGE UNDERSTATEMENT. She is just downright demeaning and insulting. If she disagrees with anything that you are arguing she will attack you on a personal level. Almost had to get the dean involved with the things she wrote/said to me.
Grades with a few assignments and be preppared to read. You'll be doing a lot of writing as well in this class. There are weekly journals that you have to do by noon on Friday from weeks 2-12. There's 3 papers, each one gets progessively longer. The text you'll use is mainly online. Slides are posted online and communication matters with Rowley.
Dr. Rowley is one of the most disrespectful professors I have ever had the disadvantage of taking. She is passive-aggressive in many aspects of not only teaching but also emailing. I was not impressed with her teaching style either. If you are unfortunate enough to have to take this specific class with her, be prepared to read and take notes.
Don't take her
I cannot stress enough, do NOT take her classes. Initially, she seems like a kind and intelligent person. She may be intelligent, but she is cruel. She will not help you, even if you ask. She's rude, coarse, and disrespectful to students, even to those of us actively trying in her class. I and many of my fellow students were reduced to tears.
Overall not a bad English teacher. Ive had better teachers and ive had worse. I heard she can be a tough grader but for my class at least she was actually pretty easy on grades. Her class is graded on a 10 point scale which is a life saver. Only bad thing was lots of readings and she always had class discussions on them. Attendance was mandatory
Extremely tough grader (while also grading on a 10 point scale) and rude towards students. I finished the class with an 89.25% (0.25% away from an A) and sent her a respectful email asking if there was anything I could do to bring my grade to an A. She responded that it's "inadvisable to pester professors about grades" and that my grade was final
Do not take her. She caused so much stress because of how tough she graded. I was terrified to submit any paper to her because she is so nitpicky. EXTREMELY BORING lectures and tons of reading. Her class theme was fast food. 4 papers graded on a 10-point scale which was nice except she took of whole points for MANY reasons. I do not recommend.
The worst professor at CNU. The densest textbook ever and she did not do anything to make it more accessible. This class is crucial for moving onto 400-level courses and I feel like I learned nothing. I do not understand theory and neither do my classmates because she doesn't teach. Focused so much on Plato's Forms?? Also rude. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Professor Rowley means well, but she is not a good teacher. She expects you to know and understand everything, even though this is an entry level course. Only her opinion matters and she proves no guidance as to what we are supposed to be looking for within our reading. She is not the worst but also NOT the best. If you can avoid her, try!
do not take professor rowley. she is the most condescending and rude professor i have had the misfortune of taking. i somehow maintained an a in her class (at the loss of my sanity) but i could not take the constant anxiety i felt every day i set foot in her classroom. she has no sensitivity, no warmth, and should not teach.
This is pretty much a high school English class. You can do everything Rowley says and still get an 80% on the paper.
If you have the push and pay attention, she won't let you fail. Rowley is kind and really wants her students to improve in their writing. If you respect her, she will respect you. I loved her feedback and I learned so much. If you take her class you should expect to work because she doesn't take crap, but if you put in the effort she will help you.
Dr. Rowley was nice, I don't know why these reviews say she isn't. I took her for 123 and 223 and got an A in both. Easy homework, some easy papers. Class is boring, you just have to push through. She lays out the whole semester on the syllabus and follows that exactly. Papers get harder as you get deeper into the semester.
Dr. Rowley is an excellent professor. You will get every penny out of your education! She is an expert in her field and her class is such a joy. That being said, if you are not a literature/English nerd, you will probably hate her class because it is pretty intense. There's lots of reading (at least for ENGL 200) and the exams are essay questions.
sharon when i catch you you better be ready because i will not hold back this time. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. she is a horrible professor and person. this lady should not be allow to teach or speak around anyone who values their life. worst class i've ever experienced. i hate you sharon.
I didn't mind her much at first, but she made the students more uncomfortable, just a bad energy. If you don't correctly analyze a text she'll laugh at you in front of class. Makes her personal problems very clear in class and uses them to almost make us feel bad for being uncomfortable. Repeat what she says in class on exams and you'll be fine.
She would pick on me a lot. Don't watch the movies she assigns with other people. There's a lot a lot a lot of reading. And you have to present like 3-4 times.
Dr. Rowley is a very critical professor and does not hesitate to share negative feedback about student work in front of the class. I would not advise taking this class unless you absolutely have to. Additionally, grading is based primarily on tests and her grading is inconsistent (she'll take off grades for an error in one place, but not another).
