Very easy. All you need to do is take good notes. Only one major paper. Wants everyone to pass.
She is really sweet - smiles at the class when we walk in. And she is extremely passionate about the subject, which is always a good thing!
I think she was very unclear and I learned almost nothing from her class. We never reviewed anything. I thought it was a waste of my time and money.
This class grade is based on 3 exams so you do have to put effort into studying but she is fair, clear, and makes info. intresting.
Great instructor. Very knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful to understand concepts and terms. Exams are easy if you studied.
Twelve years ago,I had a sociology class but this class was filled with Dr Sharan Stowers' passion, zeal and intellect. She brought a higher calibur of educational preparedness that each class was a joy of learning.I am a PreMed student that now because of her I'm striving to be a Medical Socialogist
Her class was very easy if you took the time to studied. Your grade is based on 3 exmas and one research paper. Not very helpful or friendly. Her lectures are very confusing sometimes and very boaring
She will help you if you ask. Her tests sometimes were a little gray. Study and take notes and you should be okay. I got an A.
take good notes and study and you'll do fine. She believes in extra credit which helped me. Tests aren't too bad...not easy but if you took notes you'll get a good grade. She talks clearly. She definitely knows her Soc. Watched a lot of videos which made the class a little more interesting.
I thought she was a little wierd. She put her subtle opinion into things that she believed in and taught them as fact. I don't like this at all. Not a hard course and she taught it well, but a little too liberal for me.
Ask her about the tribe in Papua New Guinea! Dr. Stowers is a very awesome instructor. She helps everyone with a genuine problem, she is a wonderful all around great person to learn from. If you have an opportunity to take her class do it!
Very Strange, makes you take a lot of notes, tsts are not that easy added her own opinion in what she taught, you could tell she a liberal point of view
While i was very interested in the subject matter i was bored with the class, the best part were the studies we read, if everyone doesn't read you really can't have any type of discussion. most of the class was spent trying to get closeminded students to t
im only two weeks into the semester with her but she seems liek the typical kind of professor you dont want to get. like, calling on people, picking on you when you get there late, etc. etc.

The best instructor I have ever had. She's incredibly bright but teaches at our level, she's very fair and most willing to help you out. I looked forward to Dr. Stowers' class every week.
She is the best teacher i have had on this campus!! She doesn't just throw info @ you and want it back, she wants you to think for yourself. I rec'm her friday afternoon class. It was the only class i looked forward to this sem, and was actually sad when it ended. She actually cares and really just wants students to learn..GREAT TEACHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very knowledgable, but unfortunatly, she seems disorganized and fickle. The sylabus was rendered almost useless by the third class, but if you take her class, YOU WILL BE QUIZED ON IT, so read it!! (i don't know what learning her sylabus has to do with Sociology, but then again, she's a doctor, and I am not...)
Great teacher!! Best one I have this semester! She is very knowledgeable and gives many chances for extra credit! :)
Stowers cracks me up. I love her. She so nice...This semester, she handed term papers back with no grades on them so that people could fix them and turn them back in and she didnt take points off. She always lets you turn it work late and gives tons of extra credit. Good Class.
She is really weird. She is def an acquired taste...but the class is an easy A with her b/c she gives so much extra credit! You also get to watch fun movies! She is funny and eccentric, but you will like her!
Dr. Stowers is not just a great teacher but a phenomenal woman. Very knowledgeable about the subject, gears class towards interest of college students, gives great extra credit, and is very funny. Best class and teacher that I've had at HCC.
Dr.Stowers has so much experience, has a lot of crazy stories. Def a different way of teaching but its enjoyable. PAY ATTENTION TO LECTURES and def do the readings she gives you. Overall its an easy class and shes a laidback hippie type so the class is really chill and so is she. I wouldnt reccomend the class to those who enjoy structure.
I loved Prof. Stowers class. She was challenging and encouraged me to think, and be creative. It was always a pleasure attending her class!
Does not clearly communicate expectations. Nice enough, yet very unorganized, (ex. lost student assignments, confusion about how assigments should be done, revised syllabus many times but still did not follow it, holds you accountable for knowing voc. she makes up (ex. "McMansion"), tests questions are opinion biased w/no real answer (except hers).
I took the honors class, so I'm not sure how her reg. classes are, but she's really helpful, gives lots of opportunities for ex. credit, she's a fair grader, and understanding if you need an extension/miss a class for a good reason. Easy A! I would def take her again. Her assignments and tests aren't super easy, but very doable and fair.
WOW-I love this woman! She is helpful and passionate about our world! So-sometimes she's a little unorganized?-It comes with the genius! No big deal. She gives THOROUGH study guides and wants you to succeed! It is refreshing to have a teacher who is not a poser and believes EVERYTHING she teaches!
deffinatly knows her stuff.. but horrible teacher.. like needles in my eyes. fun feild trips and that junk but classes are a waste of time. test have nothing to do with what we learned in class.. and the total lack of organization is horrendous. i cought our "guest speaker" who was some prestigious scientist doing janatorial work on campus
Terrible teacher, talks about her trips to Africa instead in the middle of talking about scociology. Just couldnt get wtf she was saying. I dropped this class within 2 weeks of taking it,usless teacher.
I loved Mrs. Stoweers! Yes her powerpoints / lectures would get pretty boring but she was so nice! She was very understandable and the class really wasn't that hard.
If you're not a people person DONT TAKE HER!! You have to talk to people a lot in her class and it sucks. You have to write a paper where you have to interview a guy ages 18-26, abd its worth a lot of your grade, and she doesn't really give guidelines for it, she doesn't throughly explain assignments at all and she is a little ditzy.
She is not very organized, but she is a very sweet woman that is passionate about her work. The tests were not that great, but they were doable. The tests were filled with multiple-choice questions that were opinion based. The assignments were not clear. Overall, she was a good professor.
This woman is one of the worst professors I have ever had. I have never disliked a professor more then I dislike her. She is very condescending and acts like you are five. She doesn't teach what you need to know. You get random facts about useless things. Her powerpoints are extremely unorganized.
As I read comments about Dr. Stowers I have to laugh and scratch my head. I can not comprehend the negative ratings for her, but chalk it up to lazy students who thought they would coast through the class. Suck it up people. I have missed multiple classes due to illness, not touched the text book, and still maintained an A. Yes she does have a pape
Great teacher! I loved the class. Gave easy extra credit Takes her student's comments and tries to make the class better for the next one gives plenty of feedback to improve your project. Very understanding Take this class it really makes you think
Veryy boringg!
Super easy class, laid back professors. It would be hard NOT to get an A in her class. She's a really nice woman and is really laid back (even brings food to class sometimes).
Dr. Stowers is a great teacher, nice lady very educated not always organised quizs in SOC 101 were bout 10 questions easy if you read material uses APA for papers, exams on the harder time. lots 2read, but classes are always interesting, we went on a field trip to DC for class. I recommend her shes a nice lady will probolly be taking he again
This Was a Very interesting course with captivating subjects/discussions. kept my attention everyday. But, as said she is disorganized, and just about none of what is learned in class will be on the test/quizes. sidenote: she does condescend, no one wants to be talked to as if they're a child.
She's a sweet lady but disorganized. She's not to clear what will be on test but dont count for a large part of the grade. Worth taking For a decent grade
Pretty good professor. She's not really clear on what will be on the exam until someone asks, so ask. One complaint is that she interjects her political and personal opinions into the lectures, but I just ignored it.
she is really helpful and great, uses examples, provides with a study guide, have many activities, very responsible but does not like when people talk in class and interrupt a lecture, so people who read the material she gives and listen to her during the class do good .. all quizzes are easy if u follow the syllabus, i definitely recommend her !
Great teacher. Very interesting and fair. You have to do the reading people. This is not the 13th grade, it's college. She has a lot of knowledge so listen up and show up to class and you will do well. I believe the people who do not like her class do not like to do the work that is required. Some of you need to grow up.
Awful teacher. She will always goes off topic. After the 1st 3 weeks 5 people dropped & 12/17 of us still in the class are failing. Many of us tried to work w/ her & to really study the text but nothing worked. If for some reason you take her class; use TONS of vocal words in written parts & fight for your grade & answers, she'll give extra points.
Very disorganized, does not go over material in a systematic order. Powerpoints useless. not recommended.
Wonderful teacherShe has interest in Soc., Anth., Arch.I would suggest her to Anyone for Any of her classes. I took everyclass I could get with her and the lowest grade I received was B+
Fairly easy as long as you show up I skipped a lot of classes and still got a B as long as you can do work on your own you'll be fine
She is a professor who will treat you like a grade school student. Her classes are boring and useless, as only the reading you do outside of class is tested on. She also gives you lots of busy work. One of our assignments was to write a poem about an early human species. Our final project is a board game instead of an exam. She is ridiculous.
She is a good teacher, however for a soc 101 class she gave way too much work. It felt more like a 200 level class. It was not very hard, just time consuming.
Boring lectures, but if you read the required material you will do fine! Offers up to 25 extra credit points. Taking her again next semester
Very nice lady, and provides several opportunities to get extra credit, her lectures are pretty interesting however not very cohesive to test material. Gives you a study guide of key terms, make sure you understand the concepts of the terms not just their basic definition.
Awful professor. No material on tests taught in class. Tests are confusing and the "right answers" are based off of her personal opinions and political views. Unorganized. Does not answer emails from students. Gets off topic very easily. I will not take another course with her. Definitely choose another professor!!
Took Stowers for Cultural Anthro and I will not be taking her ever again. I will be studying International Relations and I was super excited to take this class because it matches perfectly with my major. But, every class is off topic, she talks way too much about herself, tests are nothing of what the class is... Although, easy easy grader...
She was very helpful and I thought she did a pretty good job teaching the information. You do have to study, but not a whole lot. She did get sidetracked an awful lot, but she told some pretty interesting stories. You can tell she loves what she does. Probably will take again considering my major is Social Work.
Enjoyable as a person but seems kind of out of it sometimes. Really interesting (though upsetting) videos and subject matters. Almost never responds to emails. Tests are entirely based on the textbook, absolutely nothing from the class, but attendance is mandatory. Read a lot if you want to pass. I sincerely stress that. Forgiving grading, though.
The tests are mostly all from the textbook. Her lectures are of good quality, but they usually don't relate to the test material. Other than that she's a very nice person and very kind-hearted. If you're having any problems outside of school, she is more than willing to work with you about taking tests at home, studying with her, etc...
Love this professor! She's very considerate. VERY! She tried her best to help other students pass her class when they were failing. She's easy to talk to if you have concerns. The grades are mainly based off a huge project with a research paper included, and tests. She holds review sessions and her lectures are intriguing. Offers easy 25 crd points
She's nice and lets you turn homework in late but you have homework every week for class. It's a lot of work and the class is boring. I love sociology and anthropology but didn't like her as a teacher.
Very nice lady, seems a little out of touch though. Class and lectures were easy to follow. She gives you all the terms you need to know for the test before hand. Only one research paper, and two quizzes. The rest of your grade is based on tests and participation/attendance. Plenty of extra credit opportunities. Always ready to help students.
Dr. Sharon Stowers is an inspiration. I would not be having the successful journey in Higher Educational pursuits without her vision, caring and dedication. There has been no question, that Dr. Stowers has gone beyond the call of duty. She was the first person to realize I had low vision and could not see one text book but was Acing the course.
It seems as though she can be an amazing teacher, she talks about how shes traveled all over the world. But, majority of class she mainly ends up trailing off and talks about her daughter or living in Massachusetts. Read the book and take a lot of notes. In class I learnt more about her personal life then sociology.
Professor Stowers is a good professor. The way she explains things sometimes can be confusing but she works with you if you need help. If she see's you making an effort in her class she will do all she can to help you.
Very tough. Gets side tracked insanely easily and ends up talking about something else the rest of the class. At the end of the course theres a huge paper to write. Going to the learning center is required. Tests are very hard and will tank your grade. Good luck
She is an amazing professor, pushes you to do more than the bare minimum but is not crazy strict or boring by any means. Just absolutely no phones in class!
I took her sociology 101 class and absolutely hated it. I had to miss a few classes at the beginning of the semester and it hurt my grade a lot. She lectures about unimportant things and goes very quickly over the important things, making it difficult to follow. Tests were very difficult and lectures were not very interesting.
The actual material is very easy the issue is the professor does not teach. She goes on about life stories then just magically expects us to know everything on the exams. If you cant teach yourself dont take this class.
Exams are so hard and she doesnt do much to help.
SO HARD
EXAMS ARE RIDICULOUS
If this wasn't a required class for my major I would not take this class. It was so difficult and the professor wasn't much of a help. Thankfully she allowed quizzes could to be done in groups. The tests were very hard.
Took this class to fill my schedule because the classes i did need were taken. Big mistake lol. Do not take this class unless you absolutely need it- its harder than it needs to be and she can be hard to understand sometimes. As a criminal justice major I did horrible, but she was a good professor.
I usually don't believe these reviews are accurate but they seriously were for this teacher. I would not recommend her class. Easy subject in general and she made it all the more difficult, unorganized and gets easily flustered over the smallest things. Avoid if possible
Her homework is fair if you pay attention in class. She is very upbeat and likes to keep on pace. Her office hours are very helpful as well but thats it she isnt helpful in class.
She scribbles on the screen and the powerpoints have no useful written content. She speaks and it doesn't help if that's not your learning style. LEctures are not mandatory but they don't much either. It is hard to focus on her class too because she goes through slides fast.
Horrible teacher. Expects you spend close to said hours after every class to study the material. Assignments are given only a few days before theyre due. Does not teach in a coherent style. Avoid at all costs
I can honestly say that I learned nothing this semester. I didnt think this class was hard but I taught myself everything and exams felt like such a waste of time for her class.
Class is long and boring with little interaction. All she does is tell stories and although she is a nice lady has no place belonging in a classroom.
Please do not take this professor , she will give a study guide and the test is not the same . She is very rude when trying to talk to her about your grade. she shows she does not care if you do not understand she will move on in the middle of your question.
very unorganized and confusing
Class is alright felt very boring at times and the professor wasnt the worst or the best. Id take her again if I needed to but I would rather have somebody else.
Class is such a waste of time. The lectures feel endless and they have nothing to do with the actual material that you are learning. Id definitely take this class with somebody else.
Taking her class and believing her was the biggest mistake. Exams have material that we barely covered, and the stuff we practice most does not show up on Exam . Has a lot of attitude
Very dull lectures. Not much personality. Also put the second midterm right after the withdrawal period ends so you're screwed if you mess that test up. Kinda harsh grader too. Wouldn't recommend.
Class doesnt matter and is very hard. Exams dont line up with what she talks about in class and after the first week of the semester she basically stops responding to emails.
Please save yourself and don't take this class. What you learn in class is probably less than 20% of the exams which you have 3. She gave an impossible homework assignment and when asking for help, she would get upset because we don't get whats going on.
Assignments didnt even line up with the syllabus.
She rambles a lot in the lectures and what she writes on the board doesn't make sense half the time. Attendance was mandatory but I found solely reading from the textbook and watching youtube videos online were more helpful than going to class.
Bad Professor. Not consistant. All over the place mentally. Scatter-mind. Confuses students with inconsistent lecturing.
I don't think she knew one person's name in our class by the end of the semester. There were only 2 midterms and a final which weren't that bad. The class is very long, boring, and she goes off topic which is sometimes confusing.
Really didn't like this class. Boring and not organized well to take good notes. I'd go with someone else.
She isnt very helpful when you are confused and she is hard to reach outside of class. If you are disciplined you will do well shes nice just not a good teacher.
Class was fine but I didnt learn anything. Only take this as one of your cores or electives dont take if you actually want to learn about sociology.
Overall enjoyed the time I had with the Professor and would recommend the class to anyone.
I wasn't very interested in Sociology and only took it because my advisor recommended it. I was going through a very rough time when taking her course which led to me not being able to attend every class. She was an amazing person to talk to and she was very understanding, she even tried to help me with my issues that I had. I am very thankful.
