I had trouble in this class. The accent is tough to understand, but not impossible. This was her first year. She wasn't sure what class she was even teaching at first. I blame the school for this. The class was an a 1st level chem class, but she teaches it like you should already know chemistry. She seems annoyed when you ask her to clarify.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. I originally registered for this class and section under the teaching of Dr. Mao (great guy) but somehow we got passed on to her which I don't even know if the university can do but I think that is so wrong to do. She was LOST the entire semester. I corrected her several times. HORRIBLY UNPROFESSIONAL
Start of the semester was tough, especially because we signed up for Mao and got her. Seems like it's her first year b/c she doesn't really know how to teach. Didn't really learn much in class. BUT she actually listens to students on how to improve the class. Started adding more tests, extra credit, quizzes to boost grades. Make sure to talk to her
Very boring class and she expects you to know everything about chemistry. Her exams are tough and her accent is hard to understand. Wouldnt take her again.
SAVE YOURSELF THE DROP! Dont take her. Her accent is horrible and sitting in the first row didnt make a difference. Shes also very fast so you cannot afford to get distracted for a second. She puts her students down a lot and only grades on 3 exams plus the final. Everyone in my lab who had her ended dropping her lecture.
It's obvious Dr. Jain knows her stuff, however, I'm not sure she knows how to convey it. I cut her slack because it was her 2nd semester and her accent is a bit heavy - nevertheless she does listen to suggestions and also gives extra credit. Definitely read and DEFINITELY do not miss class - you will fall behind.
Chem it self is hard , but she managed to help me and some other friend get that A, she mostly looks for a lot of interaction in class and always being there. Her exams are a bit tricky, but doable, she's super nice!
This professor makes you learn about chem. All exams were over 75% passing rate and many people got 100 on exams. attend lecture and tutoring. she has a heavy accent but her lectures are easy and straight to the point. she gives homework and always willing to help students.
you'll have to do online homework questions from a website, but they help you for quizzes/tests (you can find them on Chegg). She's great about practicing problems... Her quizzes and tests are easy. Just study the powerpoints and show up to practice problems. She's nice
Dr. Jain gave me a great understanding about chemistry. Her powerpoints and practice problems help alot. Receiving an A is easy once you do your part and study. She takes suggestions in making sure her lectures are productive. She's sweet and really cares for her students.
Dr. Jain is a caring instructor. It can get tough if you don't put your part into it. She provides a lot of practice problems for students so they can understand the material. She basically provides everything, just practice and study the material before you come to class.
The class consists of 5 exams: 4 regular and 1 final, but one regular exam is dropped, so that helps. There is also homework online that is easy, and if you attend the PLTL sessions for the class it boosts up your final grade a good amount. An A is doable in her class; study the powerpoints a lottt and do practice problems and you should be fine!
Ms. Shashi Jain was a decent professor, but did not really do much to help out the students. She expected us to know everything on the slides and if you didn't understand it, she would basically explain it in a way that made you even more confused. IF you want a challenging professor, I recommend her. (her lab was said to be easy)
Worst professor ever! She is unapproachable and very rude. I asked her a question once when I was lost and she told me to I should know this and to figure it out. Never taking her again
Would highly recommend her. Easy exam if you attend class and pay attention. If you skip class, good luck passing.
The most rudest professor i have ever had. she is so cruel and puts you down in front of class for asking a question. Accent is horrible. Laughs at you when you don't understand. Definitely would never ever recommend her to anyone!!!! Don't expect an A
Shashi is rude. She does not like explaining the material to you a second time. If you ask her a question or are confused about something, she laughs at you. I would not take her again.
Dr. Jain is a great professor. She really cares about her students and goes above and beyond to make sure that her students understand the material. Chemistry is hard in general, but Dr. Jain is great at explaining everything. Loved her class! Would definitely take again.
She wasn't a good lab professor. Her reports take a while to do. She can be rude when asking a simple question and already looks like she doesn't even want to be there. You can't copy the reports from the manual. Her tests and labs were easy and interesting to do. Just that, she just makes everything feel dreadful. Just pay attention & you're good.
She put me down in her lab because I didn't know a certain chemical equation. Said I shouldn't have passed Chem 1 and I did not belong in her class. It was only the second day of labs. asked another student and she didn't even know but she answered cause she searched for it while she was putting me down. She is rude, accent is thick, and horrible
I really struggled in her class because she really seems to be bored in her own class. She does not like to answer questions and will make a face when asked one. I do not recommend her if you like chemistry because she will make you regret taking her lab.
She does a good job explaining the material. It's not an easy course if you don't put in the minimum time, but it's very doable. She gives a good amount of extra credit which should help those that are struggling, but overall, she's helpful and I would recommend her.
One of my favorite chemistry teachers. Very straightforward with what she wants. People writing harsh reviews more than likely don't put in the time to study as with most college courses. Ms. Jain is a wonderful instructor. She goes out of her way to make sure people understand the material, just ask questions!
Chemistry is not an easy subject, but Ms. Jain makes it easier. I've never been good at science-type courses, but this one came natural to me for some reason. It was hard, I'm not going to lie, but I managed to do better than I expected.
Amazing instructor. At no point did I have a hard time in her class. The tests were very easy and I'm glad I took her for chemistry. Super sweet.
Some of the easiest exams I've ever taken. Maybe people were looking for a challenge, but this class is a breeze.
Incredibly easy class if you make the effort to show up. I never broke a sweat in this class and I breezed through the exams. Just make sure you come to class!
Genuinely cares about the success of her students. Gives out credit every now and then if you show up to the classes. The tests are super easy if you just go to the labs and do the assignments.
Wonderful instructor and extremely helpful outside of class. Probably one of the sweetest instructors I've met on campus and she teaches the class so well.
Highly recommended for Chem. She goes out of her way to help her students that it's admirable. She makes chemistry seem so easy with the way she instructs. Try to take her if you can!
Fantastic instructor that goes out of her way to assist students. I can't stress that enough! She makes the class so enjoyable just by the sheer amount of help she gives. She throws out extra credit every now and then so be on the lookout!
Definitely one of my favorite instructors because of the sheer ability to teach. She helps out her students ALOT. Even with those that struggle, she will make time to help them. She encourages office visitations too if that's not enough. Either way, great teacher.
Reads off PowerPoints and rewrites preworked examples. Has attitude and expects a lot more than normal from students. Be ready for snarky comments and for your questions to be ignored.
DO NOT RECOMMEND! She is awfully rude, and makes unnecessary comments. If you do not answer back in 5 seconds she starts assuming you do not know, and calls out the class for being unprepared or "monkies" as she called us once. I believe she is bored in her own lessons as well, overall do not take her class because you will regret it !
Shashi was the rudest professor I have ever had She puts slides up everyday makes you answer and will walk around if she sees you are struggling she wont even try to help she will just make you feel like an idiot for not knowing how to answer, her class was a disappointment by far
Professor Jain is a great professor, although not an easy one. She is available during office hours for any additional help. I would not recommend if you do not want to dedicate lots of time reading PowerPoint and submitting homework online. Easy A if you put the work, otherwise you will not pass the course.
she's so rude. She gets frustrated easily, and does not like to answer questions. Get anyone other than her
highly recommend her for chem lab
Dr. Jain may seem uncaring, but she truly cares about students who put in the effort. Chemistry is not easy, so no professor will be an easy A. Her lectures can be a little fast paced at times but with the homework and powerpoints she uploads the material is easy to grasp with study and practice. Highly recommend if you are majoring in the sciences
I was supposed to have her for an in-person class, but due to Covid-19, the class was transferred to an online format. I know a lot of her other posts say she is amazing, and perhaps for in-person classes she is, but for the online format, it is very hard to understand her and she gets mad every single time you ask for any further explanations.
Shashi is a somewhat good lab instructor, she just reads the lab notes during class. I think the class is easy because the notes are pretty self explanatory. You do 1 lab report per week. Lab midterm was not hard and no Webcam!
Dr. Jain is a really good, somewhat old-school professor. She uses power points for lecture and Knewton for homework. It is somewhat difficult doing the online class but she really does her best to make the course a good one.
I had Professor Jain this past fall and she was truly one of the worst instructors I have encountered at UTRGV. She is very rude and makes you feel belittled if you have any questions. The work was tough but that was inevitable as it was chemistry. Only register for her if it is your only option. :/
I must admit Professor Jian has good knowledge, but her lecture is so heavy because she just reads and it becomes boring at some point, does not make students feel motivated. She makes you purchase a platform just to take attendance (a waste of money, since she just uses it for 3 minutes of the entire class). Lab report every week.
I wish I dropped this professor before the semester started. I've never once signed up for such a bad professor until I got her. You dont learn anything in her mandatory lectures and you have to teach yourself everything. she says to ask her for any questions yet once you ask, she makes you feel stupid for asking in the first place. 0/10
I have to take Dr Jains CHEM 1311 class as apart of a prerequisite, and she is one one the worst professors at UTRGV. She spends her online classes lecturing yet she makes you feel stupid for asking a question in regards to what she is teaching. Her due dates are terrible, she expects you to prioritize her class only, and she can be quite unfair.
Dr. Jain is very rude and unaccommodating. Encourages you to ask questions and then proceeds to make you feel stupid for them and if you don't immediately understand she will say "chemistry is not for you." The labs uploaded to blackboard are very unclear and unorganized, resulting in me turning in the wrong lab multiple times.
Please do not take Dr. Jain if you are the type of student to ask question. She says to ask question and then makes you feel more dumb when she responds. the homework was not hard just annoying. also she's just gonna say to memorize everything and the criticize people who have jobs or have to do other things besides just studying for her class.
Shashi is a good professor and the tests are very similar to the powerpoints so nothing unexpected was tested on. She uses knewton for homework and gave extra credit for the quizzes. Overall, she tries to make sure students understand the matieral and had alot of review sessions.
Jain does a lot of lectures and PowerPoints but I like learning like that. You have to remember chemistry is not easy for most people and if you dont put your effort, you wont excel in this course. Jain does a good job of explaining the material and she gives lots of opportunities for extra credit. She was very understanding during the semester.
Professor Jain is caring, understanding, and passionate about what she teaches. You will need to put in effort. I enjoyed her class because you learn so much. She is always open to questions and to help outside of the classroom. Knewton hw & ec quizzes are easy 100s. She bases her exams right from her lecture slides and has awesome review days.
Professor Jain works to the need of students. I took her course this semester and she's a professor that you know is passionate about her job and loves chemistry. She encourages students to study proactively and to not only take the class for a grade but to also gain knowledge for future classes. She makes the foundation of chemistry easy.
Dr. Jain made chemistry easy to understand and always made sure we understood the topic before moving on to the next. She gives plenty of examples in lecture, making it easy for us to ask questions in class. Her exams are based off her lectures, so attendance is very important. You do however need to put in some effort and review the material.
I'm not going to lie I was a little scared to take CHEM with Dr. Jain because of the previous ratings, but I don't regret it one bit! Dr. Jain really cares about her students. READ and PRACTICE the problems and notes she has on the lectures, and I promise you'll pass! She also gives a lot of extra credit. Would definitely take her again!
Amazing professor, very understanding and will go out of her way to make sure you understand. She only test you on what is covered in lecture, Easy A if you show up and pay attention.
Shashi Jain is one of the sweetest professors. If you pay attention in class, do homework, and do extra credit quizzes, the exam will be easy. She also provides review problems for the exams and goes over them in class. Dr. Jain provided a lot of extra credit and was extremely lenient. She was also accessible outside of class.
Dr. Jain is an amazing professor and cares about her students success in the course. If you pay attention, attend lectures, do all homework, practice on your own, and complete extra credit quizzes you are guaranteed to pass this course. Her exam reviews are also extremely helpful. I highly recommend taking her for this course!
I took Professor Shashi for Chem 1 Lab and did not really see her only once. The TA that took over the class, however, was great. Lap reports were easy A's and exams were simple if you study. In total, is around 9 lab reports in partner group, one midterm, and one final. Extra credit quizzes. Take those quizzes, they help a lot in grade.
She wasn't very helpful and always was a little condescending when speaking about improvements for class. She uses knewton and takes "extra credit quizzes" which don't count for any points but really do so do them. & attendece is v important
Very nice professor, show up to class, don't interrupt her lectures, and be polite to her on the daily. You should get a nice grade w/ possible extra credit if you do all the work on time. She will give you multiple chances, but don't take them for granted! You will have to purchase a separate website for lab work unfortunately
Took her class for lecture during the summer, understandably, things went very fast. We used the Pearson software and we were given the chapter homework through there. Easy but long. No use for the textbook, if you don't understand it, too bad. Take advantage of the quizzes and the homework and other resources and it should get easier. Math HEAVY.
Great lectures and appreciate all the examples the professor does with the class. I am also grateful for the tables given to us during exams so we don't have to memorize EVERYTHING. Homework only gives two attempts and counts points off if you get wrong in first attempt. Drops the lowest exam and quiz. Lecture can get boring but she's great!
Took lab with Dr. Jain, and she was so nice. Lab reports and post lab quizzes are the only homework given. Super easy, anybody can get an A or B if you study. She does about a 30-45 mini lecture on the lab and is super helpful during the experiment. I definitely recommend taking her if you're not into chem, she makes it easier to understand.
I really enjoyed taking her class, she is dedicated to making sure her students understand topics and is willing to help at any time. Her lectures can be long but they are very informative and I learned a lot through them. She helps out a lot for final grades too.
Dr. Jain is an average professor. Her class was most difficult as she was not able to fully explain certain concepts and was very soft-spoken so if you sat in the back, it was very hard to hear her. Her grading criteria was clear, but she is a very strict grader despite her saying she grades "leniently". Overall, it was an average class.
Can't miss a lecture otherwise you'll be lost. Tends to go fast when explaining. Sometimes gets upset if you don't know or understand. Provides lots of material and powerpoints for exams and quizzes. Gives lots of examples for a concept which was very helpful. Overall wants students to learn
I had her for her lab, and they were fun. She does give you the tools to succeed. I do have two complaints though. Firstly, at times it might be hard to understand what she says, so make sure to sit close to the board. Secondly, the lectures were behind on the labs, so we did not get any thorough preparation for the lab. But its not her fault thoug
Took this class for the summer so it was very fast paced, but she works with you as long as you put the work for it too. You can't expect a high grade without putting in the work. She is always available when you have questions, for me this is a hard course, but she is helpful. She encourages everyone to sit in the front, which is helpful.
Professor Jain is an amazing professor and makes learning Chemistry easy as long as you follow along in the lecture. She goes by a point system when determining final grades. 80 points earned in the class are based on 4 tests (20 points each), but the best part is you can get a 23/20 on each test. You have 3 max absences in lecture AND PLTL.
Not a bad professor, you can tell she knows her stuff very well. The only problem is that she is teaching a beginners class. In her mind, she thinks we are SUPPOSE to know this already and gets mad when you dont answer with 2 seconds. She has 5 tantrums a day saying we wont learn anything if we dont answer fast. Shes better off in a difficult class
Dr.Jain is a sweet professor once you get to know her. She truly cares about her students and will help you if you have any questions. She does want you to read any lab manuals before and understand them. Critical thinking is needed. She doesn't hand out easy A's unless you earn it which I feel is better. As long as she sees you are trying.
She is a very mean professor who takes her way out to pick on students and is extremely rude for no reason. She's an ok grader but if she doesn't like you then she will grade poorly.
Super rude professor, im not sure why the university hasn't done anything about it yet when many complain she grades terribly when she doesn't like you. heads up, if you want me to respect your class time, ATLEAST respect the problems i have at home instead of making fun of me for being poor
Professor Jain is a good professor however not for a beginner class. The notes she provided were awful and terribly vague. SUPER thick accent that made understanding her and the material very difficult. Along class being lecture heavy and mandatory made class horrible. Does provide extra credit and help, not a bad teacher just not for me.
I had her for CHEM 1311 in the summer and even though the course was supposed to be super fast, she was able to pace the curriculum very well. She gave lots of extra credit throughout the semester. There are some extra credit questions on the exams, extra credit for completing the review exams by the end of the course, and more if you attend class.
She is an okay professor. There is lab reports and quizzes due every week. The lab reports follow a strict rubric that will cost you your grade if you do not follow correctly. The midterm and final are based on labs done and what she lectures so make sure to take notes. She does not have a lot of patience and comes off as rude at times.
Please avoid at all costs. Even in lab, she is very lecture heavy; notes are pretty much mandatory. If she says something once, she expects you to remember it. Her lab slides are disorganized, and she is not direct with grading criteria. She can also be rude at times: “I'm a chem professor, not English. I'm not reading all that.” - Dr. Jain 2024
Professor Jain is very knowledgeable, organized, and presents lectures clearly. I appreciated her willingness to help her students. However there is more to this than meets they eye. She is often rude, mean, condescending, and throws tantrums over simple questions. If you ask a question be ready to hear "You should already know this" over and over.
Dr. Jain is a tough grader and doesn't give out easy A's, which makes me learn better. Some people might find her rude/difficult, especially if they want an easy A, but if she sees you learn the material she will have respect towards you. If you do want to truly learn and have more of an independent learning style I recommend!
The teacher was disrespectful to students asking questions, often responding rudely with remarks like "YOU SHOULD ALREADY KNOW THIS!" or "YOU DON'T KNOW BECAUSE YOU NEVER LISTEN" Her lab classes were hard to follow due to her rapid explanations and quick erasure of material, along with her accent, leaving students little chance to ask questions.
I'm currently taking her and I missed a test day but it was out of hands because I had a OR emergency and when I asked her if I can take it she said no and that I have to pay attention in class even if I had a 90s above and before she said no another student asked the same thing and opened the test for him like Bruh. She has favorites guys
I had the most fun in this lab. Dr. Jain is chill and understanding. She's also really funny, and I looked forward to showing up to class every day. If you want an easy chemistry lab, take her class. She'll make it really easy for you, and she gives extra credit. The lab reports are easy. Take her class, you won't regret it! :-)
Going through rate my professor before joining class I saw a lot of bad comments about her and at first she can be rude. However, once you talk to her and show interest in the class, she is kind and funny. She's passionate for students to learn and gets sad/frustrated when they don't listen to her. I loved her, she's not hard, get it done, easy.
This teacher was horrible from the start, she expected everyone to know everything even we were just starting. She make us work in groups all the time, in my experience my team wouldn't do anything at all and when I talk with her about that she told me it was my fault for choosing that team and that she couldn't help (even tho she did the groups).
Rude, unapproachable, and flat-out discouraging. Asking questions felt like an annoyance to her. She got fussy and defensive if you pointed out unclear instructions or her grading mistakes, even marking things “missing” in reports/data that weren't. Fight for grade—you're paying for this. Would never take her again or recommend her to anyone.
After taking her for the Fall of 2025, I would say she is a pretty great teacher. She wants all of her students to succeed! After most of the class failed the 1st exam, she allowed for a retest! She also posts study guides. 4 exams in total and minimal homework + quizzes. At the end of the semester, she gave a ton of extra credit. Overall, 9/10.
She has 4 exams and minimal homework + quizzes. She posts in-depth study guides for her tests because she wants everyone to succeed. Towards the end of the semester, she gave a ton of extra credit.
This professor only wants students to succeed! She has 4 exams and very minimal homework and quizzes. She provides study guides to help students on her exams. At the end of the semester, she gave lots of extra credit. 9/10 professor!
Study the lab reports since the reviews are barely similar to the exam. She is lenient with lab reports. she gave extra credit to our final exam. She expects you to already know everything from the chemistry lecture, so if you are taking the lab without the class you will struggle. You are graded in a group, 1 person messes up everyone loses points
She is a good teacher, but the class can be hard. I would study the notes from my lecuture class for her tests and passed. Her grading is fair just followed her sample. Her tests are 12 questions, but have more questions in them. Her questions can be a bit confusing so read carefully. Just study her quizzes for the exams, she offers extra credit
