Horrible....not well prepared - reads directly from lecture slides - exams have little relevance to what's being taught - the exam is just a random assortment of lecture notes - no direction at all...
Shauna Burke... well, for her first/first couple years doing it, we can't do better... but unorganized, NOT helpful (answer to a question? What's an answer?). BEWARE OF EXAMS!!! If she says "There are 16 ways to...lose weight" Memorize them WORD FOR WORD or else you don't get the mark. I wouldn't take her again to be honest...
Good prof who genuinely cares about her students. For a new prof, teaching a newly designed part of the course she did a great job and continues to improve!
Oustanding teacher, lectures are presented in an organized manner. She ensures everyone understands concepts and explains them clearly. Is available for help upon request. One of the best profs I have had at UWO.
Very interesting teacher. The material can be boring and repetitive. Exams are average. Memorize everything, and I mean everything. Has fun activities to make the class more exciting.
the class was fun, quite boring and all the material was common sense. exams were fine. she reads directly from her slides, makes fill in the blanks. she cannot think on her own
Awesome prof...the class was fun and Dr. Burke taught me a lot. Intelligent and funny.
Dr. Burke is a very inpiring professor. Her exams were fair and I learned a lot from her lectures which were presented in a clear, organized format. I would love to take another class taught by her again in the future. I wish there were more professors like her out there.
I enjoyed the class. It wasn't very difficult but I learned a lot thanks to Dr. Burke. She is very helpful and definately knows her stuff. GREAT PROFESSOR!!!
cool prof, makes class interesting :)
Shauna Burke is the best, and the hottest teacher I have ever seen, defiantely recommend this course just to see her in action!!!!
Great!
Tends to talk at length when the class is open to discussion and gets behind in lectures. Still she has a great personality that makes listening to her tolerable. All her lectures can be summed up in the textbook that holds all the answers to her fill-in-the-blank slides.
Good prof. Really nice. HS 1000 with her is a bit boring - the information covered in inherently dull. You're supposed to do the readings (which are looongggg and boring), but I totally got by without doing them. On the exams there'll be two or so questions from the text, but they are complete common sense.
She's a great prof, class is very interesting and topics well covered.
Very easy and clear. Will stop class to tell people to stop talking though - which is a little much.
Does as well as can be expected with dry course material. Midterm and final fairly easy. Occasionally interrupts class to ask for everyone's attention, which is a bit too much like elementary-school but is otherwise a good prof.
She was such an awesome prof to have. Fun, understanding, clear, and willing to help if you help yourself. Wish she was teaching the 2nd semester for health science. I'd rather have her than the current prof.
Amazing. Literally the only bad thing I can say about her is that her voice is kinda squeaky...but otherwise fantastic prof, super interesting material, textbook is actually interesting, her tests are soooo simple if you study. Lots of memorization but it totally pays off.
Not an easy marker. Not lenient if you have any issues with the online quizzes. Dont expect a great answer if you have any questions. Not a nice prof.
Awful. While the material itself is relatively easy, she makes no effort to make boring topics interesting. I get the impression she thinks she's a great professor already & needs no improvement which is far from the truth. Exams include very obscure "facts" that were barely mentioned. Oh and make sure you buy the text bc she couldnt teach w.o it
I thought that she was a nice individual, she taught the material in a clean, organized manner which made it easy to study as a first year still adjusting to university. She's a bit biased in her teachings because she focuses heavily on what she particularly works on. Her exams test you on some specifics, but nothing's a surprise if you studied!
A decent prof but injects too many topics that are of personal interest to her. She has a superior attitude and treats students condescendingly. Her tests have very picky and specific questions. I wouldn't really recommend her if you can avoid her.
Exams are terible with random facts from videos and lecture. She is creepily happy it's discomforting and rather distasteful. Like settle down.
WHATEVER SHE MENTIONS IN CLASS WILL NOT BE WHAT YOU SEE ON ANY OF YOUR EVALUATIONS. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THE MANUFACTURING OF CANNED TUNA TAKE THIS COURSE. OTHERWISE SHE TESTS YOU ON IRRELEVANT STATISTICS AND FACTS THAT WILL NOT BENEFIT YOU IN HEALTH SCIENCE IN ANY WAY. NOT A FAN
Class material is somewhat interesting, but the exams were ridiculous. It seemed that she a bunch of questions out of thin air just so she can make 80 of them.
This Prof lies to you with a smile on her face You need to know iinformation well from all then readings and articles and her lectures to get an A in this class....even tho she'll tell you that you can get away with general trends...
Overdramatic and terrible prof. Only really cares about the things she's worked on, and lies about what's on the exam. Will say most content will be from slides, but then will put lots of questions from the textbook. Also says to focus on general trends, but then will ask really specific questions. Exams are just ridiculous.
When she says focus on the general trends - she really means focus on obscure and tiny facts. you will need to study for this course.
Really enjoyed Shauna Burke as a prof. She is really passionate about what she is teaching. She wrote the textbook so the lectures are very similar to the text. Be sure to read all additional readings and FOCUS on the statistics presented in lecture
For each chapter you learn, she literally goes over 1-5 pages of it but expects you to know the rest. On top of that, she focuses a lot on statistics and small details such as guest lectures (which she has at least once a week) and videos (new video shown at least twice a week). This class is about pure memorization of a lot of useless information.
Boring lectures, likes to tests statistics, assigns many chapters. She's very good looking though.
Dr. Burke's lectures are interesting and she possesses a great knowledge of the material. The exams are very difficult; you will need to read the textbook in great detail in order to succeed (do not believe her when she claims to only test main ideas). Be sure to do all of the additional readings and don't skip class as videos are important to know
she's a good teacher; however, her slides are kinda useless except for the odd stat. she tests a lot on movies and guest lectures, and you HAVE to read the textbook to do well. she also takes quite a long time giving tests back which is strange because it is only a scantron, i don't know if she messes up on questions, but it is frustrating waiting.
Great prof, super interesting and upbeat. I was never bored in her lectures as she's not the type of prof to just talk aimlessly about the subject, you can tell she is very passionate. Exams can be tricky though, tests on stats and concepts explained in videos and additional readings . Take good notes and keep up with readings to do well!
Tons of comments saying her tests are hard, but she tells you exactly what is testable. Stats from lectures, videos, and guest speakers. May need to know some textbook concepts, but most of it is covered in class. No stats from the textbook need to be memorized. Easy A if you study
Burke is probably my favourite prof I've ever had. Although some don't agree, I loved coming to her class and did not miss a single lecture. I love that she is super nice but also has attitude to her. Made me respect her as a person IDK. Plus I love her whole ideology on life (which she incorporates in her class)
Definitely my favourite prof of first semester. Her lectures are always to the point, very interesting, and any additional readings or videos always relate directly to what is being taught in class. Downside is only having a 40% midterm and 60% final. But as long as you pay attention it shouldn't be too bad
Dr. Burke is very passionate about her work! It reflects in her teaching. I really enjoyed her class and plan on keeping the textbook because it has actual information about health :P The course isn't too tough, but it can get difficult if you fall behind on readings (they pile up!) Great course and great instructor!
Alot of materials to read and the 40% midterm and 60% final was just unfair but she's a great and knowledgeable prof and stuff covered in her lectures actually show up in the exams so pay attention and go to class. The course is very organized and enjoyable.
I absolutely loved Dr. Burkes class and looked forward to every lecture. She does test on statistics that were covered in lecture which can be a bit obscure and require memorization. Textbook readings can be long and sometimes dry but are essential to the course as she does test on material straight from the textbook.
I absolutely loved Burke and her enthusiasm and love for her area of knowledge. Though the course is very straight forward, and somewhat of a self-help course, it does require you to do readings as well as MEMORIZE a lot of content. The test was basically only the lecture material; however, the final exam had a lot of textbook miscellaneous info
Pay attention to additional readings and statistics from the lectures, they are almost always tested.
One of the kindest but yet respectable profs i've had this year. She makes it clear what is tested and gives fair grades. I only had two exams which was tough but at least there weren't assignment. She's clear with material and organized and is helpful in guiding you in the right direction. I get a sense she's an overall great person!
Great Prof: Good help, interesting lectures, fair exams... but you must be detail oriented and DO YOUR READINGS!
Shawna is hands down my favourite prof I've had in all of my undergraduate experience. She comes off as a "sass queen" but I admire her tough attitude. She is very inspirational when it comes to the work she does around the community! Im disappointed that I can't find other classes taught by her! Very enjoyable class regardless of the difficulty.
Knows what she is talking about. I know the comments say the exams are unfair but they actually are really fair. Read the textbook though because you will be tested on content from there. She is a very caring prof and tries her best to be a good professor. One of my favourite profs this year.
Dr. Burke is one of the best profs in the school. She really cares bout her students and makes an effort to keep her lectures interesting and relevant. Keep up on your readings and put in a little effort to study and you will do great in the course. Overall an amazing prof. She also does yoga breaks!
Shauna Burke is my favourite prof I've had so far. She is extremely clear on what we will be tested on and therefore her exams are very fair. Lectures are interesting and she is extremely passionate about the subject. Would 100% take her course again
I loved having Shauna as a professor. Her lectures were very interesting, and the things I learned from her I feel are actually applicable and relevant in the real world. Go to all of her lectures because there will be questions on the exams from class discussions and videos watched. 10/10 teacher, I hope to have her again!
For someone who isn't in the sciences, I found Burke really made this course appealing and engaged further learning for me in the topic! Her lectures are clear and concise and she is very open to answering questions. It is lecture heavy and some chapters will rely solely on the textbook and not presented in class. Big class but she's great!
Engaging, passionate, and is clear with what is going to be assessed. For the tests, most of the material tested is from lecture (ex. stats, videos), but there's a fair amount of content tested from the textbook that she may or may not cover in class. Don't fall behind on readings and don't focus too much on stats from the textbook.
Burke was one my favourite profs this year. She is a great teacher, with clear and concise lectures. If you want to succeed in this course, GO TO CLASS and READ ALL THE TEXTBOOK READINGS because some questions on the exam can be very specific. Her classes are engaging and very interesting, I would take her class again for sure!!!
She was an amazing professor but you need to know every single detail that she says in class. Her class was very engaging and interesting but you need to learn a lot in order to pass the course.
Solid prof, delivered course content very properly
Exams were of average difficulty but Professor Burke typically included around 5 questions based on obscure details from lecture. Health Science 1001A is mostly very basic information that most people would already be aware of.
From her very first class Dr. Burke immediately made an amazing impression. Inspiring, motivated, knowledgeable, realistic, professional& structured... clearly knows how to teach. You MUST attend lecture or you won't do well on exams... she can get pretty lecture specific on exam questions. Textbook is just a secondary resource, LOVED her!!!!!!!
Really caring, made class very interesting.. but did rush to finish the course as she spend too much time on simple topics at the beginning
Absolutely loved her !!! Her lectures were very interesting and she was very personable. Be sure to go to class as she doesn't post everything and will have that stuff on the exams. There were a couple textbook questions on the exams.
Absolutely amazing!! Her lectures summarize topics very well, she is willing to help. Sh tries to connect certain ideas to her peronal life or just life in general. Would recommend her for sure. Her lectures are not boring at all and majority of the questions on the test are from the lectures so pay attention to videos, lecture notes and stats!
Amazing prof, interesting lectures. Easy to fall behind on readings, but they definitely help when it comes to exams. By far one of my favorite classes so far!
Dr. Burke is an absoulte gem. She is my favourite prof, and I look forward to her lectures every single week. Dr. Burke gives more than a lecture, she literally give you a full on TedTalk every single time, and I love it.
Amazing professor. She is really passionate about the stuff she teaches and clearly explains concepts during the lecture. However her tests are challenging and test on very specific details from the lectures and the textbook.
Had a great time this year with Dr. Burke. Honestly speaking, if you attend her lectures, pay attention to what she says and do her assigned readings this class should not be as hard as others make it out to be.
Overall I really love Dr. Burke as a person. Her teaching style keeps you attentive, and her lectures are genuinely interesting. Lots of readings to do, but the book is an easy read. Her exams were lacking. I found that many questions asked for irrelevant/uninteresting info (eg. exact stats), but to be expected, as she can only use scantrons for it
I had an amazing time in Dr. Burke's class. She gives a lot of reading but the textbook is interesting so it's not that bad. Her lectures are really interesting and Dr. Burke's passion for the subject really keeps you attached. The exams are hard but fair. Overall, I really enjoyed the course.
Such a kind person and a great prof!! Definitely one of the best I've had, she is super passionate about the subject which makes her lectures interesting and much easier to pay attention to. As long as you keep up with the readings and go to class it's a great course!
I found Dr. Burke to be a very average prof. She's passionate about what she teaches, but the content was basically higher level grade 9 health class, very basic stuff. However! I found her testing to be unfair, you need to memorize a bunch of stupid details, ie. specific words from class videos, and I felt like I didn't actually focus on learning.
She is super passionate about this course and talks a lot about her own research which I thought was very interesting. She always wants students to do their best and lets us know which chapters to expect on the tests! She does a great job
Burke is by far the best professor and overall just human being at Western. Her class is engaging, and not difficult! Go to class, read the textbook, put in a few hours of studying and you will get an A. This class requires some statistic memorization but honestly my favourite class from 1st year (maybe even all of undergrad) and it's due to Burke.
Shauna burke is an AMAZING professor, probably my favourite in all of first year. Her lectures are so clear and engaging and are pretty much like a ted talk as she is very interested in the topics in this course. She also brings in her own research. In terms of evaluation WATCH OUT her exams are very long and challenging and there are only 3 exams.
Amazing Professor!!
This professor is an amazing lecturer and explained concepts well. However, there are only 3 exams, each midterm is worth 32.5% so if you do poorly on one, it can ruin your course grade in general. Exams cover small details from textbooks, lectures, videos, and additional readings. BEST OF LUCK!!
Hands down amazing professor. She is very kind and always wants to make sure that the students are doing well not just academically but in other ways. Her exams are very hard and specific so watch out. She very strictly tests on stats from lectures. Puts quite a bit of textbook stuff that is not covered in lectures.
Shauna Burke is an amazing professor! This was a great class and I really enjoyed it.
Dr. Burke was a gem during pandemic learning. The class was very organized and she hosted weekly "espresso sessions" on zoom in order to connect with students online. Very helpful, I loved her class. The only downside was that it was very heavy on readings (and the readings were very long, upwards of 40 - 60 pages on average every week).
Dr. Burke did an incredible job teaching Health Science 1001 this semester for so many reasons. Lecture content was clear and enjoyable, tests and grading were extremely fair, and she went the extra mile to make the students feel more welcomed at Western in a virtual semester. Will most definitely be hoping for Dr. Burke as a prof in the future.
Mandatory health science class that I had to take and Shauna Burke was an overall pretty good professor. She gives off Elsa vibes and is really passionate about the subject. The worst part was that she kept testing us on her own research and the exam questions were much harder than we thought. She's a stickler for details and specific words.
She is amazing! Her lectures are so engaging and she teaches in a way that makes it not feel like complete hell. The smart book assignments are annoying but a great way to boost your mark. She is an angel, I love her!
Although these readings were long, the content is what I personally find interesting so it wasn't too bad (also a great textbook to study from). She genuinely cares about her students and how they are feeling and progressing. Lectures were easy to follow along to and exams weren't "easy" but were totally fair. Would take again, reminds me of my mom
Very very nice prof who puts in a lot of effort and has good organization. Did not LOVE the course, concepts were cool, the delivery was not very interesting, but that's if I'm being picky. Overall, would recommend for sure!
Favourite prof of first year!
By far has the most interesting course content. What I love about Dr. Burke is how she cares about the students. I learned a great deal from this course, all of it applicable. The readings are crazy long and sometimes unreasonable but tbh Dr Burke is a reasonable prof. Cant complain other than that though, good prof good class
Amazing prof, wants you to succeed, and extremely kind! Looking for more Burke classes in upper year!
The course design is not desirable. All you do is reading the course materials and textbook, totally self-guided learning. Exams test your memory.
Dr. Burke really seems to care about her students. Her lectures were interesting and well thought out. Participation in tutorials is graded.
Very accommodating professor.
Amazing course. Although the readings were sometimes excessive, they could be excellent summed with the recharge quizzes. I'm looking forward to taking more courses offered by Dr. Burke in the future.
I had Dr. Burke in my first semester of my first year, and she remains my favourite professor from my entire time at Western. I genuinely looked forward to attending her lectures, because she was engaging, passionate about the material, and truly kind. A great professor and a great person.
Literally the worst prof i've ever had in my life, 80% of your grade is based on testing and she claims it'll be balanced between readings, lectures and videos given in class. But no, it's memorizing useless statistics from 1980s and specific dates, this isn't history class? I have learned a lot from this course but only Useless content is tested.
Testing is awful, I admire how passionate she is, but the testing is just awful. I like learning the content (there's so much btw) but what she puts on exams are irrelevant. For the exams to be so detailed oriented and 80 questions is so unfair, like no one has the time of day to remember every date and stat, just test us on the important stuff!
Exams are unfair😭
Test are really unfair. I studied so hard just to be tested on a bunch of stuff we didnt even focus on. Told us to memorize statistics from all the readings and lectures then put 3 out of 80 questions about statistics. Asks the most random specific questions instead of actually important material. All she does is read of slides online.
The content for the course itself is interesting but she adds her own research in and quizzes us on it ( C.H.A.M.P ). There are ridiculous questions such as when was the 1st Canadian food guide introduced,..( why would I care about these minor thing ?). Other than that it is mandatory course so not thing you can really change about it unfortunately
Tested us on niche details that were only mentioned once or twice. No reason for the midterm grading % (27.5% x 2) to be worth more than final exam (30%). Profits off students by making us buy her textbook and putting mandatory assignments on Connect. Uses the TAs to do her work and she never communicates directly with students.
Horrible mandatory class. The information learnt was interesting but it would help if 85% of your mark wasn't based off of midterms (2) and the final which consists of useless information that is just there to trick you. This prof also doesn't allow you to skip 2 tutorials without penalty, and the syllabus doesn't clearly specify that.
The course was terrible. Exams tested obscure details, and Burke gave no guidance beyond listing chapters. The grading policy enforced a strict final class average (68%-72%), exams were 85% of the grade and were made to meet that class average. She rarely communicated and left TAs teaching. Overall, a disappointing and unprofessional experience.
The exams were extremely niche, however, given that there were 3 exams total, it was easy to get a hang of her testing style. Paying attention to small attention was necessary and very little common sense can be used to answer exam questions. I found the information extremely interesting so studying for these exams wasn't so difficult.
My fav sem 1 class. Every week had an interesting topic that is useful to the medical field (cancer, nutrition, drugs). Dr Burke is kind, caring, and passionate about health. Tests are really fair and just basic memorization. Some are angry about being penalized for missing tutorials when there are literally marks on syllabus for tutorial attendance
The material she teaches IS NOT what she tests on. She teaches overall concepts and in a less structured manner but all of the exam questions are facts such as specific percentages from the textbooks and minor details barely cover in the lectures
Dr. Burke's course has great content, but the experience is overshadowed by extremely unfair exams. The assessments are overly niche, unreasonably difficult, and do little to support actual learning. The exams felt more like a barrier than a reflection of the material. A frustrating, discouraging, and incredibly unprofessional experience.
She cares about her students and test mostly off of slides. She does test on stats but not more than 5/7 questions on a 80+ question exam. Study her textbook. Workload was very manageable
While first years may have a conflicting experience with Dr. Burke, her upper-year classes are terrific. She provides excellent feedback and wants you to succeed in her classes, so it's very easy to know what she is looking for in her assignments. No exams, just a final paper where both the TA's and prof are readily available to help. Highly recmnd
Her exams were pure memorization from all the lecture videos, slides and textbook which contained extremely specific questions and statistics. There is no way to study for her exams because they are UNFAIR. Also forces us to buy her textbook.
gives zero guidance for exams and tests on extremely niche concepts or stats
Sweet prof, lectures are long-ish but the content is interesting. Parts of the exam just included her own research projects..also, statistics, TED Talks, and guest lecture video info from random areas we needed to memorize...other than that, everything else was fair. The textbook is huge but great to study w/ and so are the SmartBook assignments.
Honestly, Burke's class was the worst part of my semester. I dreaded having to listen to her drone on and on about random stuff. Her assessments included random stats from a 300 page textbook, things like 'how many dolphins had cancer in 1867'. Genuinely hated her classes. Also, who has quizzes from 8am-8pm??
Nice professor but lots of reading
WOULD NOT WISH THIS ON MY WORST ENEMY. worst exams.
Her testing is SO unfair. Makes u memorize things from her really long textbook so she can make more money like dawg at least teach it to us
Burke seems like a kind woman, but I feel like some of the questions on the exam and midterm were made just to trick you. However, she is not as hard as some people make her out to be. Just sometimes can be a lot of work when you need to be reading the textbook, watching her lecture videos, and doing weekly smart book assignments.
Nice lady. Tests on statics which makes no sense because statistics change every year. makes you ready 40 pages of the textbook every week- the one she wrote. makes you memorize her own research and programs. Exam questions are attempted to trick you
Makes you buy her textbook with slight variations every year. Makes you memorize said textbook, as well as her own research and random youtube videos. Tests are not about content, but rather irrelevant details and figures. Stopped offering the course in person and makes TAs create lecture videos because she is just that lazy
Honestly not the worst course, it was one of my favourites in terms of how interesting it was. It's just that the lecture material & textbook reading can be lengthy. Don't procrastinate on this course! Statistics aren't too bad either, they were just from lectures. Note main ideas from textbooks, you'll be fine.
This content of this course is actually interesting and useful, but the way that you're tested is ridiculous. The vast majority of the midterm and final (over 60% of your grade) questions are either trying to trick you or random stats. The course is interesting at times and prof seems like a nice person only reason I won't give her a 1.
although it is online, she seems like such a nice and caring lady. the exams were fair imo, def lots of content, but nothing too hard to understand. few stats on exams, textbook heavy (ish) because she wrote it. id say between the lectures, extra videos, smart book assignments, quizzes and learning activites, its too much to do, that isnt helpful
She's alright. Content was interesting and lectures were fairly paced and online. Exams were a fair bit annoying by testing for statistics and seemingly random things, but were overall fair. You must read the textbook, and the amount of required readings did feel a bit much at times.
if you can't memorize the entire textbook then I'm sorry but you will be cooked.
Lots of textbook stats on the exams but I think she's overall a fair professor. Seems super sweet and you can tell she genuinely enjoys what she teaches. I looked forward to learning the course content and she made it engaging despite being online.
5 mandatory tutorials that you had to participate in, but they really helped my understanding when it came to writing/studying for the final, and the TA's were really great. I would say that the midterm was a lot more difficult then the final, but i also studied for the final a lot more and took things more seriously after the midterm. Good course
I never saw her once
First of all, I can't even explain how frustrated I would get when I would remember/have time to do her WEEKLY quizzes after the random a** deadline of 8pm????… hello? Anyways the random stats just to bring the average down is insane and the content is basically all about the textbook she made and the CHAMP program she owns
Sweet prof and very interesting course to say the least but the way it's taught is not it. Lecture videos are monotonous and the midterm was on random stats and not actual content. assignments are also very tedious focusing on very niche stats. The final exam was a lot more fair and you will learn to adapt to the pace.
I haven't personally met Dr. Burke, but she appears kind and caring. Really was not fond of the all content we could be tested on: lectures, textbook, tutorial questions and supplementary videos and articles. Along with needing to know stats, studying was overwhelming and all over the place. However, I did enjoy this course.
