Sallmen is by far the worst teacher i have ever had in my entire life. Im getting an A easily in this class, but its gotten to the point where I can put up with it any more. Lectures are pointless, her laugh is terrible, and she doesnt know how to teach
No Comments
I CAN"T STAND HER! her laugh is enough to make you want to scream! not everything is funny, however she seems to think so! easy but she reads right off the powerpoints. is very picky about material on exams. Take someone else b/c it's a long sem. w/h
Good lord! You simple minded people. Yes, I will admit her laugh is enough to make anyone jolt out of a dead sleep, but she itsn't a bad prof! Her class is VERY easy if you just pay attention. Lots of allowances for bad grades. (drops, etc.) Its a great G

Yes she has a very annoying laugh, but the class is easy. She goes too fast with the power points only if you fell you have to take notes, which you don't, just use the study sheets!!!
She is the most disgusting, annoying, smelly, prof I have ever had. I am getting an A but not because she teaches anything. Here's a hint:50% of exams are exactly from online quizzes @ astronomyplace.com
She is a terrible lecturer. Today we counted how many times she hacks in class. She hacks approximately 1 hack per minute. We listen to her hack 55 times or more in a class period. How distgusting!!! Cover your mouth or get out of the room!!!
Can be a little unclear in lab, but it's only her first semester here.
She isn't very helpful with questions is lab, but the class is pretty easy. Her lectures are pretty pointless, but it's only her first year here.
Too many people give her a hard time. I think that she has a lot of passion for what she teaches and she tries very hard to make things easy for the students.
By far the worst teacher I have ever had. She never goes through any meaningful examples in class. She is a scatter-brain, impossible to follow. Had I known she was this bad I would not have taken her class and would have taken 3 Physics Seminar classe
I absolutely couldn't stand her at the begining of this class, but if you go in and get help from her she makes stuff a little more clear. She's not that bad of a prof. just have to get use to her style of teaching, and she's very passionate about it.
Everything that has been listed about Sallmen is true... the class is really easy though, she just really weird... i got an A on the first test and ended up with an AB and i never studied... the class is easy, she's just messed up...
Very frustrating lectures, everything is like a big review of stuff we have learned and she flips through the power point EXTREMELY fast. Labs are sometimes difficult and she doesn't really help with questions. Easy class though.
super hot.
made me feel very dumb in an entry level course!
Thought this was probably easiest science class I could take. It really wasn't. She wanted us to read basically the whole book. Not up for it. She smells bad, she sounds like a cat coughing up a hairball, and she never wears a bra. Enough said.
OK, she tries to teach. but honestly, sometimes i just want to stand up and say I LEARNED THIS CRAP IN THIRD GRADE! And she laughs at her own jokes and then the room just gets dead silent. Yeah... it's a good time.
Terrible teacher. She thinks she is funny but is not. Laughs at her own jokes, but noone else does. I can't stand the way she laughs!
I think she is a really great teacher who is very passionate about what she does. She takes extra time to come up with models that are easily understood. I really like her a lot, and if you are patient there is no reason not to.
I was really interested in Astronomy before taking this class, and it wasn't horrible. She tries hard to have everyone understand the material. Makes class interesting even when you want to fall asleep
She is def. a crazy lady...her cough gets on my nerves, but her heart is in the right place and shes passionate about what she teaches. The online animations are helpful. I am getting an AB and go to 2/3 of her lectures. Notes are online. For the lecture she is ok but just don't take her for lab.
i thought this class was going to be a breeze, however, you are constantly taking online quizzes or in class quizes or exams or lab exams for her. She makes the tests tough, and covers content that shouldnt be covered in an entry level course. PLUS she coughs and it is really annoying!!!!
Super Easy Class... I think I took about 2 pages of notes total, and read like 3 pages of the book. If you've taken any astronomy class before this, its almost aggravating how basic this course is. The labs were ridiculous. She can be annoying at times but its better than being difficult, right?
I think she has changed her material, because I am a straight A student and I am struggling now. She is weird and annoying, she spends most of the time yelling at ppl. for talking in LECTURE! You'll have online, & in class quizzes, accumulative final, 3 tests, and 2 lab tests...
She thinks she is really funny all of the time and she is just really annoying. Lectures are more then a little boring and labs are just stupid. Exams are super hard considering the rest of the class is pretty easy.
The lectures are really boring since they're exactly what you just read for the week. 3 lecture tests, weekly lecture quizzes, weekly on-line reading quizzes, a cumulative final, and 2 lab tests that basically constitute the entire lab grade. But it was a pretty interesting class. Labs are easy.
She is a newer teacher, tries her best to be liked by all. Humor is sometims flat and has affects that are hard to listen to. But she is passionate about what she teaches-tries to make astronomy more than a 'memorize the facts' class. She gets into science and theory and makes you think!
This teacher is terrible! I was told Astronomy was one of the easies lab grades you could take. NOT TRUE! come to find out the easy teacher retired. this class is hard, tests are incredibly hard. i do not reccomend taking this class.
This class was terrible. The lectures were read straight from the powerpoint. She had an very bad attitude. Treated students like little kids, even has a train whistle that she blows when people are too loud. The tests focused a lot on the little details covered in class.
She tried to make sure all learning styles were covered in class tried to make sure everyone understood what she was talking about. Not the best at explaining complicated concepts, but she does her best and will re-explain things in class as much as it takes for you to understand. Tries to keep things interesting... tries, anyway.
I think she was a great professor. She made the class fun, especially the whistle. I think that she is passionate about her position because she goes over things to make sure the topics are understood. I also like the notecard thing because she makes sure that we don't just memorize facts, but can think for yourself using the stuff you learned.
I Hate the whistle!
Good professor, I got an A in her class.
She will crack you up! She's quirky and amusing in her own way. Also very willing to help if you don't undertand.
She annoys me when she tries to be funny, then gives her goofy laugh, but other than that this class is pretty easy. As long as you pay attention in her lectures, review the printable slides once in awhile, and study for like 15 min for the in class quizes you will get atleast a B in this class. It's all common sense stuff...atleast to me.
OK,she is a little weird (aka only wears purple or floral shirts and never a bra). But she was very straight forward and clear with the material. I got an AB, and that was only cuz I thought the lab tests were a little tricky. The class is VERY easy for a lab class and also fairly interesting. Take it!
Sallmen is crazy but she knows what she's doing. And everyone needs a bit of craziness once in a while! Besides, it's fun craziness. I recommend her highly.
The beginning of this class was easy to a fault, but now we're getting into harder stuff. But if you go to lecture more than you skip and have any sort of logical reasoning skills, you should be fine. But she is so cute! She gets so excited about astronomy, I love it! It keeps me awake :)
She is very comical. She gets so excited about astronomy. She also explains things very well. When I was reading about light spectrum and electron energies in the bok, I was confused, but she cleared it all up in her next lecture. Gives a lot of e.c. opportunities. Even takes you up on Cowley to look through telescopes. Great class, Neat Prof.
She is very funny. She is da bomb. Haha, Anyways, she is great and really knows her astronomy
Her jokes are just plain stupid!
Lots of quizzes, tests, and labs that take the whole time. She tells stupid jokes and laughs at them...she's NOT funny. She is helpful if you go in to ask for it if you're confused, but really, it's a weird class.
Not the most thrilling class I've ever taken.
Lots and lots of busy work. No real substance and she's not much help.
Very frustrating. Many times I felt lost, like we were going over way too much at a way too fast of a rate. Plan on a quiz and online quiz each week and a test almost every other week. I thought that it would like me love outerspace more (an interesting topic), but nope.
Her lectures are a bit above my head, I think because she likes astronomy so much and she knows so much about it. When I ask for help in lab, she doesn't do much good answering my questions.
Very difficult to understand!
She goes at WAY too fast of a pace for an intro astro course. She forgets that most of us take this class as a gen.ed. and, frankly, don't give a damn about astronomy. Plus her random outbursts of laughter are very annoying. good luck, you'll need it for this class
Her laugh haunts my dreams
She has a lot of enthusiasm for astronomy, but is not the best teacher for it. She is pretty approachable and willing to answer all questions though, to the best of her ability. The class itself is not bad, and it helps A LOT to read the book. Lab exams can be a little tricky.
She laughs a lot, and her laugh is very goofy. Everything that is on the tests pretty much gets covered in her lectures. Doing the study guides really helps prepare. It is not an easy science class. She tends to get pretty in-depth at times, probably because she is so passionate about the topic.
This class was very interesting, but difficult. She knew a lot about Astronomy, so a lot of her knowledge didn't exactly translate into an introductory class. It seemed like she didn't have time to help her students, always telling us to go to the course website or D2L instead of directly helping.
This class lacks substance. She knows her stuff, however she is NOT a good teacher. She moves along at a fast pace and often gets over-excited causing her to speak even faster, ending with the most horrifying laugh known to man.
She giggles a lot and her cackle is crazy. She is okay, her power points are where pretty much everything comes from. The class is actually pretty interesting. Got an AB in the class.
I learned a lot from this class. If you go to class, do your homework and study for the tests you'll do fine. She knows what she's talking about and her study guides for the tests are VERY helpful. You can tell she wants everyone to really learn about astronomy and tries to make class interesting. Labs were easy and the textbook=readable. Take it!
Wow, I hated this class. Dr. Sallmen wasn't that great of a professor, she more or less just went through her notes and didnt make sure you knew what it was. Also, her laugh was terrible, it kills you. Tests were really hard too. Tough class, I would recommend someone else.
This class was fairly easy for a science class. Just remember to always know the powerpoints and the information presented on them. Her cackle is hilarious and her comments keep the class interesting. Would recommend this for a gen ed filler.
very annoying laugh! has lots of practice questions and examples in class but goes so fast it is difficult to comprehend what she is actually talking about. often times had to learn from the book
She doesn't explain things very well, I learned from the book. The examples she gives in class and the book problems are the exact same as the test questions. She does give a lot of extra credit which helps.
Absolutely terrible, is not clear with any of her explanations. Teaches the class like she is teaching to an advanced physics class instead of introductory.
You can tell she wants people to succeed, but the class is overall much too complex for an introductory class. I felt like this was at the very least a 300 level course I was taking, and it was VERY time consuming. I simply took this as a gen ed to fulfill my science req. I completely regret it. This class was awful, and she is hard to follow.
Horrible professor. Way too complex for a gen ed class. Concepts are very confusing and she doesn't explain them well. Her laugh is the most annoying thing ever and will make you want to cry. I was really interested in astronomy, but she made it boring and complicated. Don't take her if you want a good grade or to enjoy class!
You can Dr. Sallmen knows and understands the material very well. However, she struggles very much at conveying said material to the class. It's understandable that there's a lot to cover in a semester, but she lacks proper explanation, and often times races through topics. Good professor, just not good for teaching an introductory physics course.
Great prof! Tons of extra credit opportunities and test problems are exactly like homework problems! Just practice the hw problems and you're set!
2 words: Her laugh. Her laugh is enough to drive you screaming out of the lecture hall. Also when she answers a question, you tend to be more confused than you were before. Doesn't care about the Gen Ed classes. Do not take her.
One question: are you taking this for gen ed or are you a science major? Gen Eds- Stay away, very difficult, lots of time. Science major- You actually learn and work about as hard as a more difficult bio class. It does take time to keep up, but I hear shes better than other professors because she actually explains stuff, has homework, and quizes.
GAHH! Her laugh is the most annoying laugh ever!! I had her for Astronomy lab and she does the lab and you have two lab exams..you can only miss one lab. On the bright side labs end early most days. I thought this was an introductory class but it's not. The professors expect a lot. I don't recommend this class especially if you want a gen ed.
She expects you to already know all of this information and acts very judgmental when you don't know anything. She'll tell you the answer, but with a "duh!" tone to it. The planetarium is fun, this is a good class if you fancy a 30-minute nap in a pitch black room. Plus, her LAUGH. It makes you wanna stick your head into a star globe.
She explains the material well, and her in-class demonstrations are sometimes fun to watch. The material is boring, and parts can be difficult, but she gives many online quizzes which offer many easy points, so that's a huge plus. When students ask questions, she sometimes declined to answer, preferring to keep marching ahead in the material.
Great professor!! She always makes sure to show us what we are learning with interactive demonstrations. Really interesting class too! I highly recommend to take this class with her if you aren't a science major but need to fill up your science gen ed requirement.
I was a little worried coming into this class having seen some of the reviews on here, but I really enjoyed it! The material was interesting, there was lots of in class demonstrations, and she was very knowledgeable and offers help. Her laugh is not that bad.
Quirky personality. Weekly quizzes, some online and some in-class, so you have to keep up with reading and knowing the material. Lectures are on d2l - attending class didn't make a difference for me aside from getting clicker points for participation. If you put in effort and ask for help, you'll do fine and Dr. S is totally willing to help.
She is not a nice lady. Doesn't curve until the end which she didn't even end up doing for our class. Gives extra credit question every exam and for surveysshowing up to class, examples in class rarely make sense when she does it, terrible at explaining things, I wouldn't ask her for anything because she is very very rude and inconsiderate.
Dr. S was a quirky lady. She isn't very helpful with questions. Although, she gives a lot of homework (not mandatory but need to do it to understand topics). There are a lot of chances for points in her class from pre-class quizzes before every class and in class quizzes about once a week. The final is not cumulative so that was nice!
She's a lil strange, but a good prof. Very clear on what you need to know. Tough grader, but tells you exactly what to fix. DO THE HOMEWORK. It will save your butt.
You get to drop your lowest online quiz score and lowest in class quiz score, and she offers quite a bit of extra credit throughout the semester. She gives study guides and practice tests before exams, but she still puts questions on the test that weren't directly off the study guide. Study a decent amount, and you'll do fine.
This professor isn't for those who don't already have a mind for math/physics. Her exams don't reflect the easiness of her quizzes/homework. She doesn't actively teach & writes long problems on the board expecting you to follow without explaining. I studied for hours and still did average on exams. Even the tutors struggled with her hw questions.
She is very hard to follow during lectures and she makes everything ten times harder than it has to be. She makes you do quizzes before every class and has clicker questions will help your grade a little but other than that her in class quizzes and her exams are pretty hard. She expects you to write down every single thought or you get points off.
DO NOT TAKE HER FOR PHY125. She spent most of the lecture doing example problems, or reading off of slides. With the example problems, she would make frequent mistakes, and jump all around the bored. Her exams and quizzes were worded horribly, and grading was very inconsistent. You could have all the right work/answer, and still lose points.
Very specific about notation in problems on exams/quizzes, but does not really explain in class how she wants things. Can be really confusing when explaining concepts. She likes to interrupt people before they finish their questions, so hopefully you can speak quickly! Overall, she is an okay professor, not my first choice but not the last either.
Good professor, not a lot of feedback on assignments however. Not very clear on her grading process, so lots of little things got marked down. Make sure to ask her questions if you are unsure of something. She's really knowledgeable and passionate about what she does, just sometimes gets too caught up in that.
Do your best to avoid taking this professor. I've done badly on all my exams and in-class quizzes despite my hard work I put in outside of class, which is due to her nit-picky grading. Also, she makes herself seem nice in lecture, but the few encounters I've had with her in person she was not as personable as I thought she was. Don't take her!
Dr. Sallmen is one of my favorite professors. she is super engaging, makes learning interesting, and cares about your success. Her spunk and level of energy makes the classroom an engaging and exciting place to come to.
I loved having Dr. Sallmen for class! Lecture can be a bit boring sometimes, but she does a really good job keeping the class invested with fun experiments and clearly loving the material that she teaches. Quizzes and tests matter, so don't flake on studying.
Dr. Sallmen does not know how to explain concepts and abstract ideas. As an intro to physics course, she expects you to learn by watching her do example problems on the board very quickly without explaining her through process or the steps she is doing. She moves way too fast and is very rude and not personable. Do not take her.
Quizzes before every lecture and homework every week. Test are managable. Know how to do the example problems she does in class and you'll be fine. Not really great at lecturing and often confuses the class.
Dr. S knows her astronomy and explains it well. She is outgoing and cares about her students. You don't need to go to class just review the study guide she sends out before tests and quizzes. Labs are fun because you can go to the planetarium and take a snooze under the stars. She is a laid back teacher that knows her schtuff. Would recommend.
Dr. Sallmen flies through the problems on the board really fast. If she was slower she would be actually pretty good but looking over the notes before class just a little helps a lot. Easy points for daily quizzes/online hw quizzes so do them. Not awful. Tests are reasonable and she offers extra credit. Find a good partner to help lectures not suck
Does not teach material well. The whole class would get questions wrong on hw quiz, and she would announce that we were doing poorly, but she wouldn't even go over how to get the answer... just that we were all "so utterly wrong". Take someone else. No study guide. Her equation sheet is not laid out well, so you better memorize all equations.
The class was bearable but her laugh is not. She thinks she's funny which can be humorous at times but gets annoying quick. As for the class, if you use her study guides you will do fine.
she is a very good professor who knows how to teach the material. there are study guides to all the exams and in class and out of class quizzes which are very helpful. lab attendance is mandatory but lecture is not
Quirky professor who knows the material well and wants you to do well. You don't have to go to lecture, however there are quizzes in class you can do on your phone from anywhere. You get to go to the planetarium a lot for labs which is fun (recommend being high for that, coolest thing ever.) Review the study guides she hands out for tests and stuff
This is my second time taking her PHY-155 class. I swear if you dont write literally everything down you wont pass tests or quizzes. She doesnt know how to explain concepts and likes to give trick questions on tests.
She is a super nice teacher. I was really excited to learn about astronomy for my science gen ed and it was a very interesting class. It is mostly self-propelled, watching lectures, but I liked all of the information. She is super flexible and will help out in any way possible.
This was the hardest class I've ever taken and I was stupid for taking it for my gen ed when she specifically said not to the first day. But "Sall" made it fun. She's quirky as hell and she had people laughing constantly. She didn't really take time to know the students but there were also like 80 in the class. Overall highly recommend her.
Overall I don't care about measuring stars and how far they are from earth. In all honesty, knowing more about places I will never visit simply isn't my thing, so this class wasn't the best. The professor was clearly passionate about the subject but if you aren't super into physics and overall just measuring star properties don't take this class.
This class was extremely hard and I definitely wouldn't take it if you're like me just looking for a science Get Ed. While the lecture is cool, the lab is so hard. Although I struggled in the class, Dr. S was so awesome! She's so quirky and passionate and will work with you in special circumstances. Very respectful of the native lands we are on!
Please don't take this class. I've never felt more stress than taking this class. She definitely knows what she is talking about, but this is 100000% too hard for a gen ed course. SO many notes, tests are extensive, lab is pointless and barely could be considered a lab.
Very good teacher. Made Astronomy class very fun and entertaining. Very fascinating and kept the class interacted. Would recommend if you need a lab science!
I honestly dont know what to say about Dr S. Her lectures are impossible to gain anything from and shes not very good at explaining concepts when youre confused. Lots and lots of lectures and little assignments. Bad with Canvas too
She is kinda quirky but it makes the class interesting sometimes. Would recommend for a Gen ed science credit. But you definitely need to study for the tests. A lot of extra credit opportunities! Lab quizzes and content quizzes are tough but my lab grade raised my final grade by 7%
Ignore the reviews saying this class is hard, they are being left by those who skipped lectures or didn't pay attention. If you attend class, pay attention, and review the powerpoints before each exam, this is a pretty easy A. Very good choice for a lab science credit and she is a great professor. Labs are boring, but are pretty easy.
Sallmen is a lot. The class is not a math class-- don't worry. She does her best to explain "out there" concepts. You should already have an interest if you take this class. She loves to promote only woman physicists and will even quiz you on them. I wish she would chill on the constant questions and "class interactions." Makes me not want to come.
Professor Sallmen has a background in astrophysics. She often talks about various confusing topics, not on tests or worksheets. little math but most questions are worded poorly and make the tasks difficult to understand.
Dr. Sallmen is very knowledgeable about the course material. However nothing she says is ever gone into enough detail to be able to put everything together. The quizzes and exams are almost exclusively gotcha questions without any clear answers. Lectures can be interesting at times, but nobody I talk to really understands anything that's going on.
Easy course. Lectures are boring, but if you read the slides you can easily figure out the questions and be ready for the exams. Maybe look at the book for a couple things, but the slides are pretty much all you need.
I took Solar System Astronomy with Dr. S. She is quirky but fun to listen to and if you go to her office hours she is always willing to help. This class was not my strong suit, as I failed 3 exams but I was still able to pass with a BC. She gives lots of opportunities for extra credit.
Quizzes you and tests you on people that were barely talked about and not in the PowerPoint. Quizzes and Tests are filled with trick questions and rarely about something you learn in a lecture.
There are many quizzes for lab and lecture for this class. If you don't pay complete attention in class you will miss a lot. This course was pretty difficult for anyone who isn't math heavy.
I loved her lectures. She gave clear reasoning to everything we learned and gave us many different ways to study and learn the material. You can learn the material without reading from the textbook.
There is a lot of content, but it is easy to understand especially if you enjoy astronomy. There are periodic context quizzes (open notes) that lead to an exam. She posts the lecture notes, has good study guides that you should use, and gives good lectures with interactive questions (often on tests) and models. She is nice and laughs at her jokes.
This class is WAY, I cannot stress this enough, too hard for a gen ed. She asked us who was taking it to fulfill that and we all raised our hands, and she still talks at us like we know what she's talking about. A lot of us are not science based and it's a lot of difficult concepts to grasp. She has the most confusing canvas page ever. run:)!
Do NOT take this class if it's for your gen-ed. As someone who is not studying physics or any kind of science for that matter, this class is pretty difficult. The lab is quite easy but the lecture material is extremely difficult to understand if you haven't taken a physics class before. This definitely doesn't feel like a level 100 class.
very socially awkward but very sweet. this class is definitely introductory level, lots of discussion posts and content quizzes. The exams are focused mostly on what she verbally says in class and less on the slides she makes. Overall, very nice but if you've taken any physics/stem in the past this will be extremely easy.
Professor Sallmen's class has a lot of content, but is pretty manageable if you stay engaged. The slides and study guides are helpful, and Unstuck ai was a great supplementary tool for preparing. Overall, an interesting astronomy class with a fair workload.
I took a lot of notes for the first 4 weeks of this class, then just stopped, don't even know why I still go to this class because attendance is not mandatory, there are class questions that can keep you engaged in the lecture but the lecture is super boring, Lab is simple, quizzes are online and final exam is online but tests are on scantron.
She's a very good lecturer and while her tests might be slightly tricky for some, if you tried your best I doubt you'd get anything lower than a B. If you're invested into the topic of the class you'll find her lectures to be very information filled and intriguing. If you participate in the class you'll make it a lot more fun for yourself.
Dr S was a good professor and cares a lot about what she teaches of Astronomy. There were 2 application projects(papers), 3 exams, and weekly discussion posts+quizzes, which is all manageable. The lectures can get long, but she posts all her slides on Canvas so you can take notes that way. Has helpful practice tests and was an achievable course.
