Dr. Shawn is a great teacher. I would not want to take Bio from anyone else. I am sorry that I am not in his class now that the semester is over. I am going to miss his teaching style.

If you can, take Shawn. He loves what he teaches and it shows. He's very helpful and explains material so students actually understand, what a concept! One of the easier Bio teachers in my opinion. Doesn't rely too much on the book and he always helps out during lab unlike some teachers.

Shawn is great! One of the best professors I've had at any school. If you have to take Bio 10, which I repeated several times and finally passed, take it with Shawn. He really helped get the info across, and he's a good guy.

Excellent instructor! Clearly loves biology and loves teaching. This class became fascinating because he's so passionate about it. I would take anything he teaches whenever I had the choice. Take him if you can.

4 lecture exams, 1 final, 3 lab exams. Study hard for everything, and you will do well. He is not an easy grader but is willing to go over the material (before the tests) until you understand it. Overall, a very organized and informative teacher.

Enthusiastic about the subject matter. Approachable and helpful. Lectures moved too slow, and I had trouble paying attention. His teaching style and exams frequently involve drawing pictures and diagrams, which is good for some and bad for others. Memorization for exams was difficult, but he didn't challenge students enough in terms of theory.

Such a good class! Leaned a lot, and found the lectures very interesting. Tests are not hard if your studied and took good notes throughout the unit. He is a tough grader but very fair. Attendance is mandatory. You need to be dedicated to this class, especially with the lab hours, but Shawn is dedicated as well.

Shawn is a great teacher. There is a lot of touch material, but if you study you will do well. This is not a class to ditch because there is so much material covered every day, and only material covered in lectures will be on the tests. Shawn is friendly and approachable, eager to help, and easy on the eyes!

Very easy class and helpful teacher. We hardly even have to crack open the textbook needed for class, just for some lab work and a tiny bit for clarification on some stuff. As long as you PAY ATTENTION and take good notes, then you'll do fine.

Overall, I had to work really hard for a B in this class. And I'm an A student. It took me most of the semester to learn how to study for his exams. Go to the study sessions, the first half of the semester they were always scheduled at inconvient times for me, which brought my grade down when it came to test day. Good teacher, nice guy. This class was a headache. Do not take his Botany class unless you are very passionate about the subject. One of my friends had taken his BIO10 class & said it was a breeze. I was kicking myself afterwards! This class takes A LOT of effort & hard work to get a "good" grade. That said Shawn is VERY helpful & can tell when you're really trying.

FANTASTIC teacher. You must work for your grade, but Shawn wants everyone to succeed, is very helpful, organized, and passionate.

He is one of my favorite teachers so far at SRJC. I never thought I would be so interested in Biology. The field trips are fun, and lecture is always cool. I have trouble remembering some of the details (my fault) and 99% of your grade is from quizzes and tests, but he is extremely clear, knowledgeable, and balanced. Thanks, Mr. Brumbaugh!

The best teacher at the JC. Knows everything hes talking about and has a genuine interest in everything relating to ecology. No textbook but plenty of info in the lectures. Highly recommended.

Sean is the most passionate teacher in the field of biology! He is helpful and there when you need help. The tests and quizzes require no text book but make sure to go to class for the lectures. If you try, he will reward you. Thanks Sean!

Doesn't use the book, so don't miss lectures. He explains everything well, and knows what he is talking about. Almost all of the grade is tests and quizzes. It isn't an easy class and you have to really study, but he only tests on what he lectures on and his lectures are clear, well organized and interesting.

HARD class, GREAT teacher. Listen and study, you have to work for your grade, but its a great class

TAKE SHAWN FOR BIOLOGY! He knows the topic & the way he explains the material is so easy to understand. He writes the notes on the board along with the students so he lectures at a relatively nice pace. If you study, his tests can be pretty easy, but studying is a must. He suggests all students to re-copy notes. Not mandatory but definitely helps!

I was surprised by how much memorization was emphasized in this class. I would suggest copying his notes exactly as he writes them on the board and knowing those notes cold for the test. He sticks almost exclusively to his notes on tests. Also, lab and lecture overlap greatly both in class and on tests.

I loved his class if you attend class and take notes you have all the information necessary for exams, he does a scantron and a free response section usually including a diagram etc. The lab exams were the hardest part, so make sure you take good notes and study for those tests!!! His lectures are clear success is easy if you put in the time.

Shawn is awesome! He's obviously super intelligent, and his lectures are fascinating. I alway recommend him for any biology course. This is NOT an easy course, and is very memorization-intensive, but that's just how biology is.

I just finished my final TODAY with him. He is a great teacher. If you want any grade at all, you have to work for it. I had been getting A's in the first half of the semester, then spring break hit and I dropped down to a C. Do NOT let yourself slack off if you want a high grade. High expectations, but great rewards. You will feel good about an A.

I had him for bio 10 and 2.2. Great teacher and friend, very fair, very clear, and respectful. No harder than any other teacher. People say it's too much memorization but it's not so bad, I always studied with my friend and we both got by with solid A's by just studying the night before for each test. Class was always enjoyable and labs are GREAT.

let me continue by saying that he is a good motivator, and will guide you to become interested in and learn biology. Also, we got to dissect cats and a mountain lion (among other thing) and he let me and another student stay after one class to open the cat skull and exam anything else we wanted. You can't get this kind of experience in most places.

Shawn is a great Professor & makes BIO interesting. Everything is based on lecture and lab material. So go to every class, take good notes, review your notes, ask questions as needed & or search online for help as well(khan academy helped for some things). He will help if you ask. He cares about his students & can teach.... Dream Teacher!

Shawn is a great guy not to mention he is super hot!! I started this semester dreading bio and quickly loved the class! The tests are hard with no study guide but if you come to class, take notes and study you will do fine. Shawn is great at explaining everything and doesn't make you feel stupid for asking questions. Definitely reccommend!

Really excellent teacher! Knows his subject well and is passionate about it. Don't need to buy the textbook, you DO need to take good notes and copy them over and over to get it into your brain. He gives you all the study tips you'll need to succeed, if you follow them you'll do well. Going to lab review sections definitely helps on lab exams.

Shawn selects his material carefully and presents it in a logical way, at a reasonable pace. He is a skilled lecturer. This class (Concepts of Ecology) had almost no reading assignments, so attending and taking careful notes was essential. I recommend this class for Bio majors and anyone interesting in nature and environmental issues!

Shawn is hands down the BEST teacher I've ever had. His enthusiasm drives his lectures, which were always interesting. He is very tough, so this class (Zoology) was no cake walk. He takes a while to grade papers, but gives a lot of feedback. On top of everything else, he was just a really nice guy who's passionate about the field of biology. Take!

Shawn is an amazing teacher. Taking his botany class required a high level of thinking, and tons of memorization of the HOWs and WHYs. Amazing lectures! Dr. Brumbaugh's fascination with plants is infectious. One of the more difficult entry-level life science courses... taught by one of the best Instructors the JC has to offer.

BEST. TEACHER. EVER. His lectures are extremely clear, entertaining, and interesting. I was excited to go to class to always learn something new. Really did change the way I see the world and I can apply egology to everything now. You must take very good notes and there is no text book. Just rewrite your notes to study. Best way to learn ever.

BIO10 by nature is difficult. Shawn knows what he's talking about, makes is simple and clear, and the amount of interest he has is contagious. Need help? Ask him. He'll do it with a smile. Very encouraging and wants you to learn. You will whether you know it or not. Taking Bio? Take him. You'll thank yourself later.

Dr. Brumbaugh is a super keen dude. The field trips are excellent. You should attend every lecture, as there is no text book. Very reasonable and thoughtful teacher. Super clear. Great introductory class.

Bio 10 is extremely difficult. You will not be able to pass this class simply by attending. You need to attend, take notes, and STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY. I can guarantee you right now, you will NOT pass this class if you don't study. Shawn is a great teacher and will help you when you need it, but you have to meet him half way by giving your 110%.

Must attend lectures--does not share PPT; will clarify as best as possible what you do not understand; study groups are essential; great field trips; learn to write out explicit short answers--he wants those details; though I only passed with a C (normally A-B student), I learned plenty--just not a test taker

Shawn was been one of the most respectable teachers I have taken at the JC. His lectures are clear, his words are inspiring, and his corrections are fair. He is not necessarily easy, but he doesn't really test from the textbook. So show up for class! He is incredibly intelligent, but he never gave off an aura of arrogance. Take him if you can!

I loved Shawn! He is by far my favorite teacher I have ever had. His tests are somewhat difficult but if you show up for the lectures and study your butt off you will succeed in the class. He is fair and extremely intelligent! Did i mention how cute he is.

Shawn is a very respectable person. He grades harshly because he expects you to know the material, that being said is very fair and willing to help if you're willing to ask. He does an excellent job explaining the material but you MUST study if you want to pass. There's no homework so everything is based on the 7 tests (4 in lecture, 3 in lab).

I highly recommend BIO 10 with Shawn. He is clear, stays on topic and makes sure you get the material. He is very knowledgable and excited about his subject, yet very humble. To succeed, create study groups and really review (review, review) to UNDERSTAND the material. Before this class, I hated science - now I'm changing my major to ecology.

Hands down best teacher ever. This was my 3rd chance at Bio 10 and I could not have been more impressed by him. His Exams are very challenging, but he does not require you to buy the book because you really do not need it! His lectures are incredibly organized, he uses great examples and he truly knows the material and has a passion for teaching.

I loved Shawn! If I ever get the opportunity to take another class with him Ill befinitely take it. His lectures are never boring which makes the material easy to grasp and he writes on the board exactly what you need to know. However, you need to look over your notes thoroughly because he does look for specific details when it comes to tests.

Shawn is an amazing professor who is always willing to help out on any and all issues you may have. The written questions on the test generally require 1-3 sentences with a couple of questions that require a paragraph. He does grade them hard but always gives a bonus one and multiple choice portion makes up most of the grade. Textbook not need!

Shawn is excellent about covering the nitty gritty in lecture. He expects students to take a large role in directing their education. He won't hound you about missing class or slacking, but if you're willing to engage him about it, he will give you solid feedback on how to get back on track. Lecture notes are a must. No surprises on the tests.

Class is difficult, but if you put in your study time, you will be fine. Go to class - I cant stress that enough. Exams are going to be what he goes over in lecture, so if you miss that. You're screwed. Did I mention that hes the kind of professor your fantasize about? I had him three years ago and still think about him.

As long as you form study groups and rewrite your notes you will do very well in the class. That being said there is no homework so all that matters are the lecture exams and lab test, which means study, study, study. Would take him for biology 100% again if he taught any other classes I needed.

Very magnanimous (I say, tongue in cheek). Only take him if you want to be a doctor or surgeon and are into semantics and taking zoology as if it were a full time job.

Shawn is a terrific lecturer. very easy and enjoyable to listen to, but might fudge your note taking now and then. He is interactive and engaging with students and is very knowledgeable about biology in general. In tests he is unclear or ambiguous about questions sometimes and he's to afraid to give something away if you ask him so study hard.

On the first day he said that he not only wants to teach us biology, but teach us how to look at the world differently. Sold. Truly cares about students passing. Optional textbook- everything tested on is in lecture notes, but is a hard grader (memorize important terms and you'll be fine). Also 3 field trips!!

Shawn is caring and helpful. He welcomes students to come ask for help in his office hours which I always took for granted until I went. There, he elaborates to make you understand what you don't quite get. He had 3 field trips planned for the labs and wants us to see nature differently. Studying hard and in groups are a must to pass tests!!

No homework, which isn't the best thing cuz your grade is only based on exams and one tiny project. Take this class if you really wanna learn Bio or it's your major. He expects a lot. I have never studied so much for one class. There is so much information you have to memorize, but the way he organizes it is good.

Shawn is truly a dedicated and inspirational instructor. I have had him for two semesters and have always felt so fortunate to have a professor of this caliber at a community college. Took Shawn for Bio10 and was NOT disappointed! His lectures were engaging, pertinent, and sometimes humorous and fun. The field trips are amazing as well and the best part was that we didn't have to buy the book. I recorded his lectures, and rewrote my notes which helped a lot for exams, so be prepared to study hard in this class.

I have never worked so hard in a class until taking Shawn. There is no study guide and the only extra points beside the tests is a 50pt field journal. Although I didn't get the grade I wanted, I'm glad I took Shawn because he taught me how to be a better student and be prepared for my harder science courses. Tough teacher, but you learn a lot!

Shawn is a wonderful teacher and so full of knowledge. Do not expect to skate by in this class. He is tough and makes you work for it. He is thoughtful, helpful and I learned so much from him. No homework or extra credit given. Get ready to study hard.

Shawn is an incredible Biology professor! His classes are test heavy (no study guides).Rewrite/study your notes! A downside is that he does not use Canvas, so the power point slides and grades are not available outside of class. He is very open to students coming in to talk with him. He's very dedicated to his work and I would def take him again.

Shawn is a great Biology teacher! He is a wealth of knowledge and his lectures are engaging, easy to follow and funny. If you are NOT self motivated this class will be very challenging, but if you're ready to kick butt and push yourself then Shawn will be right there supporting you! Don't miss class, rewrite your notes and you'll be good to go.

Mr Brumbaugh has been one of the most helpful, insightful and knowledgeable teachers I have taken at the SRJC. It is not an easy class, but he is trying to help you succeed at every turn; the lectures are very important and take clear notes as these will be essential for each exam. Mr Brumbaugh is incredibly thoughtful about his teaching method.

Shawn is my all-time favorite instructor. He is a very interesting, relatable, and thoughtful human being. The class trips are one of the best, most exciting parts of his class. His lectures contain all the information you will need to know for his tests, and you will know EXACTLY what you need to study. It's just up to you to put in the time.

Everything on the tests are straight from his lectures and he makes it very easy to take notes so I didn't even bother buying the textbook. Great professor! Very interesting and approachable and even does a few field trips!

Shawn is one of the best lecturers I've encountered. His class is seriously rough and will take up majority of your time instead of social interaction but you will learn a lot. He has an old school style of teaching -chalkboard only- listen carefully to every word he says, it will be on the exam. He teaches you a whole new way to learn, no hmwk!

I got a C because I am horrible at studying. Shawn was a very kind professor who really cares about his students. He's accessible out of class and the last exam is either a FINAL or just the 3rd exam if you wanted to switch a bad exam grade. He let us know our grades before the final exam to let us know what we needed to pass, made sure to be clear

I will say that Dr. Brumbaugh was the best professor I've ever had. He speaks eloquently, and he is a professor that genuinely cares about his students. Bio 2.2 was one of the hardest classes I've ever taken, and it required great effort to even obtain a C, but I learnt a great deal about Zoology. The highest recommendation I could ever give!

Shawn is one of those teachers who completely changes the way that you look at your education, and literally changes the way you look at the world. He's a great lecturer and knows that his class is hard and is willing to support you. Zoology is a HARD class, and you HAVE to study regularly, but that doesn't mean that its not fun af.

Quite possibly the best professor I've ever had. Shawn changed the way I perceive reality. Bio 2.2 is an INSANELY hard class--he designs the class to be less cumbersome on material, but fills that time with a lot of hands-on assignments. I would recommend taking this class by itself if possible. 5 unit class, but realistically ~13 units of time!

He is a very nice guy. Definitely show up to every class if you want good enough notes to study on your lecture exams and lab exams. He is always open and willing to meet you during office hours to answer questions or explain things that may be confusing. If I studied more and put in more effort I would have gotten a better grade.

This is one of the hardest classes you will take on, Shawn does not make it easier, but he will make the amount and detail of information reasonable. In order to pass you must put the work in, both in and out of class. It is hard but Shawn makes it interesting and, in my opinion, worth it. A kind of “get a C here to get A's later” approach.

GREAT BIO10 teacher!! I am loving Brumbaugh. Before taking BIO10, I hated Biology and was so scared. He is very welcoming and helps so much. Lectures are amazing and he loves what he does. Includes a few other "easy points" to help your exam scores. Hard class, but you need to put in the time/effort and he will help you succeed. Would recommend!!

Shawn is a great teacher. I did not get a good grade in the class that is my fault. he taught me a lot not just about biology but about a lot of other things as well. Shawn is the best professor I've had at SRJC. It is a hard class you need to study which is part of the reason I didn't do good. he's a wonderful teacher though I would take again.

Shawn is the most AMAZING professor you will ever have at SRJC. He really tests you on your understanding of the material, so if you don't know, you will have a hard time.
