Nice lady, good prof, but tests are way too F****n hard
Human (unlike the other arky profs).
Is a GOD among profs! Greatest prof, greatest class - loved every lecture!!
Makes the boring interesting. Though I felt like i was in high school a bit...

She is the best thing that has happened to this university as far as prof's go. Unlike the majority of the prof's, she actually teaches, and cares for her students. As far as her exams go, if you study you will pass. They are fair.
awesome!!i actualy like arch. and i really doubt I would if she was boring
I love her- she is such a fun teacher she makes the class worth going too. I thought i would hate it and it ended up being my fav. class because of her. Great teacher- i would recommend any class from her
she gets too deep into the sciences. For an introductory course I thought those exams were a bit difficult.
Great prof! Really fun to be in her classes. Materials Analysis was great. If you study, you'll do good her tests: they don't try to confuse you or anything. Go to Israel if you can.
Shawn is an amazing prof. Makes everything interesting, really fun to talk to, and you learn so much. Israel was the best experience. As long as you study the tests are fine, and she's always really happy to help. Loved the hands on!
not bad, seems like a nice lady but teaches like we are a kindergarten class, so annoying to have someone talking to you like youre a child.
Great prof. I love Shawn. And she's got this strange beauty too. She's not hot, but she's attractive and it made class fly by.
it's cute how much she loves archaeology. Yes she does treat you like you're in kindergarten but I liked it, it's good to have that when you're so stressed out about every other class. Easy course, she makes the boring material interesting. definitely go with her.
The tests were fair but covered a lot of material. She did tell you exactly what was going to show up so that was good. She's easy to approach and ask questions of. She has a well rounded backround that she brings to her courses. The "lab" assignments were too long and hard for very few marks.
Shes a hard marker, she really makes you work your ass off..but in the end, you feel more accomplished than any other classes. She gives you hands on help if you need it, and is always available to rescue you when you're stuck.
She's a great teacher.
I still remember the late nights organizing pre-hominid and "human" like skulls. You were the best Shawn! Miss your classes like crazy.
Great teacher, sometimes gets a bit sidetracked during lecture but I still learnt all the material needed. It's a fairly hard class but she makes it fun. I had no concern for Arch before this class, I just needed to take it for my Geo degree but I have more of an interest in Arch now. Study for the tests, she tells you what will be on it dont slack
This is the best class that I have taken in University. You can tell that Shawn loves archaeology and will do anything to help you succeed. Her classes are hard work, but if you work for it and read the textbook, and listen to her hints in class, you should have no problem getting an A in this class. She is awesome!!
She's clearly got an extreme interest in archaeology. She knows her stuff, but has the typical scientist's problem of not being able to teach it well. Her lectures are disorganized, and her tests are brutal, but she's a very nice prof and is very good about it when you ask her questions.

Very nice proffesor and the test are based from her lecture notes love her!!!
Great Professor and wonderful lady! Always there to help you if needed. Teaches so you can understand and remember (sometimes kind of funny). Yeah her tests are a bit hard for some but if you attend and pay attention they are easy. Loved every minute of the class!
If you are remotely interested in Arky you will find her class fun and extremely interesting. Tests are fairly straightforward and if you attend lectures and study well its a pretty easy A. Great Prof!
Shawn is amazing, and really cares for her students. She can be tough, but she is always fair, and gives her students everything they need to succeed.
Mediocre prof, very poorly worded questions on tests and an extremly boring speaker
Speaking as a student who really likes to coast without working TOO hard, this is a great class. You need to attend class and write down all her slides (as she doesn't post them online), and expand on a few points, but you almost never need the textbook, and her tests are straight forward if you study her notes and understand the concepts.
Awesome proff! Tests can be difficult, you have to study! know your sites and take really good notes and you should do fine. you can ask her any question about what is on the test and she will let you know. but if you want an easy A i wouldn't take it. Anyone who has anything bad to say about her clarity and exams are crazy. RECOMMEND
WORST professor I have EVER had. Does not post notes online and the test are all based on her notes. Good thing the text book was rent-able or else I would of wasted 200$. She assumes everyone taking her 1000 course is a arch major FYI.
Shawn is very charismatic and fair. She makes sure the class understands her concepts and is clear what she will expect for the exam. Easy if you attend class and take notes. Don't have to worry about the textbook.
Shaun is a great teacher. She makes a real effort to get to know her students and works hard to make sure everyone understands the material. Her assignments tend to be long and you have to work hard to get good grades, but she makes it clear upfront what she expects. The class work is much more important than the text, just skim the readings.
Shawn knows alot about her field, but can make the class more difficult then it needs to be sometimes, but she can give too much attention to one area making tests rather one-sided.
Shawn's lectures did get a little boring as the course progressed but the material was cool. we had 3 pop quizzes throughout the semester for bonus marks, which I appreciated because her tests are some of the harder tests I've written. But she always did her best to make sure everyone who attended class understood the information.
I dreaded coming to this class. She treats the whole class like everyone's majoring in Arky and talks to the class like we're in junior high. Her lectures are so boring and dry. Her tests weren't any better - 2 marks for every MC question?! Ridiculous. I would avoid taking this class with her if you're looking for an easy GLER.
she is a good teacher, she helps a lot with assignments and makes sure you know what to study for the test, she is an average marker, the text book is a waste as long as you go to the classes.
While her lectures are long she makes them very interesting. If something is unclear just ask a question and she will clarify the issue. She really wants all her students to pass and will always make time for you no matter what she is doing at the moment. I love her classes
I never knew much about archaeology until I took this course. It made me consider changing my major because I loved it so much. I got really into it and Shawn made that easy to do. Any questions you had feel free to email her or ask her questions after class and she will give you the best answer that she can.
Horrible lectures, assumes everyone is an arky major and bases tests almost entirely on her lectures which focus on memorizing her own archaeological studies rather than learning actual archaeological methods. Avoid her class at all costs.
Shawn, although admirably passionate about the subject, is simply not a good teacher, nor an assessor of learning. Lectured are long and confusing, and you have to write down ever single word that comes out of her mouth in order to do well because her questions are on the most specific things that she says once, and are not in the book or slideshow
Shawn is AMAZING. Arky 1000 was rough as its a big class and no one gets to know her (and vice versa) but the 3000 level courses are cool. She is super passionate, cares about her students like family (brings homemade cookies on field trips), she is bursting with endless amounts of Arky facts, and is always available to help you succeed.
Shawn's lectures were amazing. Some concepts were more difficult to understand, but she broke it down and made it as clear as possible. She gave out a pop quiz before each exam, but they were only for bonus marks if you passed. Shawn had some pretty funny stories and they helped you understand some topics. I loved her class and would recommend it.
Although Professor Bubel is obviously passionate and eager to teach, things get lost in translation. This is one of the most difficult classes I have ever taken and much of this is due to Shawn's teaching style. Her tests are very specific and difficult to complete with confidence. Lectures are long and confusing.
Dr. Bubel is an amazing, energetic, hardworking professor. Shawn teaches her classes at a comfortable pace often highlighting certain key terms, which she expects you to learn for the test. While her examinations may be challenging, she is an extremely fair person and wants you to succeed. Her passion for Archaeology burns bright!
Study, study, study. If you take Shawn's class be prepared to make a solid study guide for yourself and be on the lookout for examples she uses in class. If you do not come to class, make sure you get the notes from a neighbour (or, just show up). She cares about her students, even in such a large class; she wants you to do well...
Shawn is such a gift. She's a brilliant archaeologist and can do a lot to help connect you with the field, so she's a must-have if you plan to major in archaeology. She also runs both the field schools. She's extremely kind. Her tests are a little bit difficult but if you read the textbook and pay attention you'll be just fine!
She's very patronizing, speaks to you as though you were 5. Also, I found that she asked really obscure test questions which mostly did not show up in the textbook. Make sure you go to class and take lots of notes, she could ask you any random thing from anything, and you're better off memorizing random facts because she doesn't test understanding
Shawn is a hard grader and she has information on slides but you need to write down every word of her mouth. Read textbook because without it you have minimal information for tests. She has pop quizzes usually the class before the exam opens. She thinks everyone in her class is interested in becoming an archaeology major, which is annoying
Misleads students about the kind of content covered by exams, and doesn't teach a large amount of it. Would not recommend unless you really love spending all of your free time memorizing random archaeology facts.
Shawn is an awesome prof. She's super nice and extremely dedicated, and you can really feel her passion for archaeology when she teaches. Her tests are tough but fair; if you show up to class, study, and pay attention, you'll do good! It's not an easy GPA booster, but it's not intended to be. I learned a lot and really liked the class!
We were given a specific outline at the start of the year to make sure the course load was distributed equally across 3 exams. After the first exam we were already behind by weeks as she spends an hour of class time with only a couple slides off a powerpoint, leaving the majority of the work to be done by yourself. As well as a very hard tester.
Be ready to read! Shawn is full of so much information that she desperately wants to share with her students but never has enough time. In her higher level classes, she doesn't assign particular chapters outright, but the content from the textbook does show up on her exams. She is super caring and will bend over backwards to help you if you need it
Shawn is THE BEST professor I've ever had. She tests for real knowledge on her exams so be sure you have a good grasp of the concepts. She deeply, deeply cares about her students and she literally will do anything to help you improve your understanding and grade, no matter your major or level.
Terrible. Way too much work for a 1000 level class, my fourth year classer are lighter than this. Tests are unfair and questions are on things mentioned in passing and not in the text. We essentially have to read the entire textbook and everything in it will be on the many exams. Assignments are too large and plentiful for this level of a class.
Shawn has added way too much work for this course now that its online. The exams test on random things she says in class rather than understanding. She added in random assignments that require lectures she hasnt even posted yet and gives limited time to complete. The work load is ridiculous for a 1000 level course. Dont take this class online.
I would take this course if it was in-person but Shawn has made it incredibly hard now that its online. She says she understands our situation with the pandemic, however, she assigns so much work and doesnt have any compassion for students during the pandemic at all.
over 7 hours a week of recorder useless lectures?! Shawn assumes that we are only in her class and gives way too much lecture and reading. She has no regard for our time and give us important lectures way too late when she expects us to have assignments based on them in a couple days later. She is condescending and assumes we are all in arky. AVOID
the worst prof I have this year, she is awful. Way too many hours of lectures and no clear instructions. Expects us to spend 5+ in out of class lectures and then also read the entire textbook? Does she not realize that we have classes other than hers? Absolute garbage and the lectures are basically useless anyways.
The amount of material included on her exams are ludicrous and impossible to remember everything. It seems that she assumes we are all either only in her class or all arky majors and assigns way too much work for an intro class. Her lectures give no information and prove useless. This is a 1000 class and she needs to cool it. Shawn sucks majorly.
It is clear that Shawn wants to be an archaeologist but not a teacher. Well unfortunately for her she has to do both so she needs to figure out how to teach because right now she is the absolute worst at that. I would drop out of school if I was told I had to take another class with Shawn. She is useless, unfair, and does not care about her student
Shawn is awful at teaching and super unfair. She releases important information hours or days before due dates so we stay on her schedule instead of working at a fair pace. She has no care that people have classes other than hers and assumes we all have hours to waste for her many hours of lectures that are way longer than they need to be.
Shawn gives far too many lectures than what is fair. There are weeks where we have 5-6 hours of lectures for a class that is supposed to be 2.5 hours a week. Her exams are stupid and test nothing useful, only trivial knowledge. She does not give us enough time to complete assignments. I haven't learned anything from this class and will avoid her.
She made the class interesting with lots of assignments and 'field trip' videos to help solidify concepts. She was not the most punctual when posting class material; this could improve if the next semester is online as the videos will already be recorded and ready to post. She knows her stuff and I recommend taking this class!
on the average week in this class we were given over 5-6 hours of lectures which is extremely unfair and asking a lot for students who are already busy enough. Every single detail in these hours of lectures is testable for her, so if you miss 5 minutes of a lecture or dont write down very minor details, it is likely you will miss exam questions,
just an overall bad class. it was for my liberal ed requirement and I will not be taking one with Shawn again. 5 hours of lectures where you cant miss a single minor detail or you will do badly on the test. she takes forever to mark assignments and tests. just not a well structured class at all
I have never seen a more unfair course. This class would give roughly 5-7 hours of content per week in a class with 2.5 hours of contact time per week, and anything she says in those lectures is fair game for the exams. if you have to take this class, I would only do this class in a semester because the workload is that much.
If this class had been in person, it would have been spectacular. The material was interesting and Shawn and Kevin both clearly love what they do. However, the lectures were incredibly long, longer than she would be able to lecture in person. Even though we are at home, we have 3-4 other classes to take. TEXTBOOK MANDATORY!!
Dr. Shawn is a good prof, but is very passionate about what she does so never has enough time to fit in all of the course material. You will need to write down EVERYTHING she says in the lectures, even if it doesn't seem important. Her tests are pretty difficult, and you'll need to study hard. She is open to questions, and is willing to help you.
Shawn is an absolute gem of a human being. She is so kind and always willing to answer questions and accommodate. If you attend workshops for extra credit and pay attention in lectures it is an easy A class. She is a great teacher and her lectures are filled with helpful anecdotes and stories. Test heavy but they were all open book.
Shawn is VERY passionate about archaeology and thats wonderful in a professor, however it led to her using class time to go off on tangents that were not testable and rushing the material actually on the curriculum. Test questions were sometimes on off hand remarks she made during the lecture, so be prepared to pay attention the entire time.
Shawn seemed like such an amazing person, I didn't get any one-on-one time with her as it was a massive class, but she was clearly very passionate about what she was teaching. Sometimes though the test questions were a bit out of pocket, so pay attention in the lectures even if it doesn't seem important !
One of the best things about Dr.Bubel is her passion towards her work and the care she has for her students. I have now taken multiple classes with her and would recommend her to anyone of any discipline. Her lectures are bit content heavy however you wont end up bored. I do recommend keeping an open dialect with her.
Shawn is a great prof and all around amazing lady! She does expect a lot of her students but she gives you all the information you need to succeed. I've taken like 3 courses with her now and she inspires me to be a better student and a better archaeologist. I highly recommend Shawn classes if you are a dedicated student.
Shawn is an amazing professor that is very passionate about what she does. There are quite a few assignments and readings, but honestly the content is so enjoyable that I didn't mind. Attendance isn't necessarily mandatory, but definitely makes things easier and decreased study time for me. Take a class with her if you get a chance!!
Shawn's lectures were fantastic. She is passionate and knowledgeable. However, the tests were a bit tricky in the sense of trick questions or awkward wording. You have to pay attention to every single detail, as the smallest mention in her class could be a big topic on the exams. But still a great prof and would definitely take again.
great professor, if you miss class the notes are found online and she has some old recordings. this class is based on 3 exams and 7 assignments, the assignments are very easy, while the exams are harder and more textbook based. Shawn is easy to contact and provides extra resources to help you solidify your learning.
Tests are not too bad if you pay attention in lectures and watch the videos on Moodle. assignments are easy. Course is super interesting. Professor does a good job at keeping the class engaging.
Shawn is clearly passionate in what she teaches, but it means that her lectures are packed full of content. Her class was intense and way too complex for what should've been an entry-level course. EVERYTHING she says in class matters - if you take this class, take notes of everything - including her stories.
Shawn expects a lot of her students, but is extremely kind and passionate about what she teaches and is always there to help. She is so kind and approachable and has made such a difference during my time at the university. She approaches archaeology from more of a science point of view, less social science, so take that into account.
Tests are ridiculous, can't even pass them by reading the slides somehow?? Shes dissapointed her tests average 50%, I think its the tests not us
This class was based on only 3 exam grades, weighted extremely high. She was out of town for one (75 minute) lecture, and assigned us about 4 hours worth of content to "replace" her missed lecture. Her exams are very specific to things she said in class, even stories. Take notes, and study a lot or else you will not do good on the exams.
Her lectures are engaging, and she's clearly passionate about archaeology. However, her tests are completely unfair. Even if you do all the readings, take notes, and study, the questions are very poorly written and are on obscure topics that are hardly covered in class. It's also way too much content for an info class.
Shawn is great! The class itself can get overwhelming since there's a lot of memorization. You do have to keep in mind that archaeology is interdisciplinary, so it'll touch on chemistry, biology, history, etc. Shawn provides lots of bonus mark opportunities, and she tries to make her exams as fun as possible. Overall, it's a great intro class.
