very intelligent prof, very helpful
marks way too hard, pretty boring, but otherwise good
Has the personality of a history book & talks about cigs and booze every clas
I think he is a good teacher but this man is way too involved with stats...
very clear and interesting lectures, well organized, very hard marker though
extremely hard marker. lectures were not interesting. Does not allow for debate
Big on essay format, pretty hard marker, wears the same thing all the time
he is funny and smart, this makes his lectures interesting
extremely hard essay marker with no criteria for seminar marks
Hard marker, but if you talk to him about your assignments you'll do well.
If you can remember stats, you'll do fine. If you can't, get out now.
HARD marker, helmet hair, knows his stuff
very unclear in assignments, not very good to go and talk too
always talks about booze,Strict on essay form,Nice guy if you talk outside class
Extremely hard marker, tore me apart when I went to talk to him.
very hard marker. Far too concerned with the format of an essay. nice lectures.
Cafferky is boring as hell. Thinks he's cool to talk about his smoking habits
very concerened with the proper context and hard marker but really knows his st
Hard marker and tough final. Good lectures, knows his stuff, and pretty funny.
Knows his stuff, helpful. Tough marker. Essay's have to be really good, or else. Really good lectures and pretty funny. I'm taking another course with him, so, I thought he was worth taking again.
Awful prof! Extremely **** language, boring lectures, stupid stories about drinking and smoking. Thinks he's a funny guy. Gives a bad name to the Uvic. History department!
Cafferky is an alright professor. He really knows his stuff and tries to make the lectures interesting. (Extreme, intense opinions).
Wicked teahcer. Great marker and super nice. I totally recommend a course from this guy.
Delivers dense, info-packed interesting and clear lectures. High but fair expectations. I recommend him especially for Hist 245.
I took History of the Second World War with him, lectures were extremely interesting. Essays were marked hard.. but fair in most cases. Found him interesting to talk to in both class and office hours. Would recommend him to anyone (and have) Great prof!
Arrogant, unhelpful, unclear, confusing, biased, and **** againt men. I do not reccomment this prof.
hard marker, not always fair.
Cafferky is arrogant and unhelpful. As for his marking, it's not that he's tough it's that he discourages any original thought whatsoever. If you don't have any of your own opinions and can toe his line completely than you'll enjoy his class.
Stickler for format on his papers. Seriously, I have completed countless papers and I have never seen so many pencil markings.
Impossible to get a good mark on an essay. This class is not fun at all. Don't have him as a teacher.
I thought Cafferky was great! First history prof at UVIC - not a bad start. Super smart and very approachable.
He took the class out to he pub. He is tough but fair. Dont say anything stupid in his class.
Like his lectures, but he made me feel really stupid in the seminars
Why do people harp on Cafferky? Sure, his class is not a free ride, but this is university not high school. His classes are worth the effort.
Brutal on essay formatting. Got mad at me for using Pierre Berton as a source. Went to his office and didn't get help. Should wear his watch instead of putting it on the desk and DITCH THE BOOTS! Knew his history though, although some of his viewpoints...
Came in as the prof halfway through a year-long history course. Class average went from good to below average. That speaks for itself.
Knows lots of facts and numbers, but history is more than facts and numbers. A bit arrogant.
Thinks he's beneath teaching first year.
A good teacher, marks hard, but fair. Enjoyable class with a teacher who knows what he's talking about. I would recomend him to anyone interested History.
Cafferky is a great history teacher. He's very knowledgable, offers help if you want it, his marks are fair and reflect exactly how much effort you put into the course.
Definetly a hard marker, no doubt about it, especially when it comes to essay formatting. Don't forget ANY punctuation in your bibliography
Dr. Cafferky is a very hard marker. However his marking is very helpful, he leaves detailed comments on essays and tells you EXACTLY what you need to improve. He can be intimidating during seminars, and make you not want to speak. But he's not bad.
Knowledgable, keen, and helpful to those who make the effort, and generous with his beer
Great lecturer, sadistic marker.
Very boring and has no compassion for the subject. All he cares about is military strategy, facts and numbers. History has much more to it then that.
Awesome professor if you like military history and want to know in-depth about the Canadian Armed Forces role in World War II, especially the Battle of the Atlantic
Definately a dude. Cowboy boots. Lectures are interesting. Gives stats to back things up and make history more tangible. No denying he's a hard marker. Stern but fair.
Brutal marker. Lectures are okay but a little too much about the military and weapons. There was more to the Cold War than the types of weapons built.
Such a jerk! Very intimidating. Marks you down from the grade the TA's gave on assignments. Will never take a course with him again!
his lectures are really good, but he's a mean marker and kind of intimidating...
His lectures are clear but he marks so hard. I will avoid taking courses from him again.
Very hard marker like most people have said, if you enjoy military history he is for you. He overkills the anti-American stance, i suppose to feel our age and connect with us (its kinda sad). Have people proof read your paper over and over again.
Hated everything about the class. I will consider dropping out if I can't avoid taking his class in the future.
Get over it you guys!So yeah he's a tough marker...welcome to the history department.More importantly he knows his stuff and teaches it both clearly and well. You don't always have to "love" someone to respect them. He's got mine...
Bottom line: great boots, brutal marker.
I never though anyone could make this History of the Second World War boreing, but Dr. Cafferky succeeded. Perhaps because I'm taking a junior level lecture as an upper-years student I found the material so basic, but this guy cannot lecture well.
Great teacher, really knew his stuff. Hard marker but was extremely helpful in explaining why he gave the grade he did, and gave me suggestions for improvement. I would take another class with him.
A straight talker with cowboy boots. Good heartland values.... just like George Dubya.
Good prof. Very clear lectures, interesting subject. He obviously is very passionate about history... one downside is that he is a ridiculously hard marker. Write the best paper you've ever written and hope to pass. Still, a good prof overall.
Well he is a very hard marker like everyone has said. If you enjoy mainly the military aspects of WW2 this class is for you, cuz for WW2, the class seemed too dry.
made a dull class fun, has a great sense of humour, will help you with whatever you need. hard marker - but explains why he marked you that way.
Lectures are decent (trust me, if you think they are bad, you havn't seen bad lecturing). Labs were ok, easy enough to get marks in. Just study and make sure you write a decent paper. He's really helpful in office hours.
Good god this guy is high on himself. I'm sorry, i cannot stand a prof that cannot accept views other than his own. Plus, his level of anti-Americanism is borderline ****. I now have a profound dislike for political history due to this clowns handling of subject.
Pretty good teacher, but expect a mark several points below your average. I got a B- in this class, whereas I got 2 A's and an A- in my other Upper Level History courses . His standards are pretty damn high. That said, if you work hard and dominate the seminars, you can get a decent mark.
The class was a little boring for WW2; he tends to focus too much on the numbers. His exams are decent though, and I would definitely recommend him over Zimmerman for this class or any other.
This guy has the highest expectations EVER, and he's a hard ass marker. Don't ever think about writing anything having to do with "social" history, he is not down with the "isms" The cowboy boots and belt gets a bit much, but the main idea DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS-IT'LL SCREW YOUR GPA! SERIOUSLY PEOPLE!
What a super prof...clear and focused...take good lecture notes and don't need to read texts...likes facts and numbers on tests...paper hardest(ie microfilm research) but if done in advance can do well...got an A- by simply regurgitating his lectures...pure memorization...keep up the great work Cafferky! P.S. like the cowboy boots.
Im horrible with names and dates and was still to able to pull off good marks in this class. A stickler about paper formats but overall good.
Dr. Cafferky has a reputation as a hard marker. I found him to be extremely fair, pleasant and helpful. Anyone truly interested in history should take this oral history class - the most illuminating course I have taken thus far and essential to our understanding of history as truth.
Tough but he teaches very well
I don't know what the fuss was about. Never wants to be in class, habitually ends early, perforates his class with lots of tutorials and films, and teaches from the textbook - lectures are usually a waste of time. Always out on cigarette breaks during office hours. Probably as popular as he is because he's colloquial and swears in class.
One of the worst ever.Cranky, bad attitude. terrible grad studies prof
Run away! This professor is an OK person, lectures are good and he is helpful during office hours, but watch out for his marking, it is quite ruthless. Not recommended for first year students.
Tough class, really need to stay on the ball to get a decent grade. He really knows his stuff though.
miss his classes now that ia m not there. Loved this guys sense of humor. He is really smart and more tender hearted than you will ever know.
Good professor and good guy. I hear he is a hard marker, but I got an A in his class. If you put in the work, you will be rewarded. Plus he is very interesting to talk to outside of class.
Great Prof. He will tell you everythign you need to know for the exam in class. Take your notes and you are sure to get an A.
great prof. one of my favorites. I didnt do that well on assignments but he helped me understand where i went wrong and what i needed to do for next time and especially the final.
Cafferky knows the material very well, however, marking is ridiculously hard, especially for a first year. The final is based NOT on lecture notes, but on all 4 texts that you are required to read. If you absolutely love this subject, go for it, but not if you're looking for a decent grade.
"The Caff" was probably the most engaging, most helpful and all around BEST prof I had at UVic. Rest In Peace Shawn :(
I thought I was gna learn about Cdn history when I signed up for this class. I learned only what the 'approved' historians had to say about Cdn hist..nothing at all about Canada's involvement with its attempted genocide of Aboriginals..nor did I learn anything about what Canada is doing to amend its 'unrecognized' treatment of aboriginals.
To the guy who posted in on 03/03/09 - have a little heart and don't speak ill of the dead. Shame on you.
