Great teacher and great guy! the material covered may not seem directly related to IMS but it is. You have to go beyond the surface to see what he was trying to teach us! tests were easy, identical to reviews. All grading assignments were easy. Lots of extra credit opp. If you scored badly in this course you are slow or an underachiever.

I took for 3 classes & to say that lectures are the same is incorrect. You can fail if U don't do the work OR U can get an A if U do the work or a C if U do most of it. 40% F's would be extreme but he did mention that class in his other sections I had him that semester too. He DOES take attendance even if U don't know it. GROW UP! Do WORK!

He is a nice prof who wants his students to do well in life and at the university. He'll help you present your research at major universities as well as help you get a better job/career. He has a lot of awards and a lot of unusual objects in his office. Former students sit in on some classes because they find it so valuable. BSG is fun.

He DOES talk a lot about himself as he doesn't just read straight off the slides. If you want someone who is going to just read straight off the slides then take someone else. If you want someone who covers the material and adds to it through examples and stories then he MIGHT be good for you. It is performance that matters not sex or race.

Thinking of taking this prof during covid? I highly suggest you don't. Dont get me wrong I like Shawn, he's funny and a good prof however he is one of the worse prof during covid. He will ignore your email or reply really late, he will give you half baked answers, and grading is not consistent. I got an avg of 90 on my exams and still got C.

I don't know if I'd recommend him to everyone. If you just want the minimum then go with someone else. You can fail his class if you don't do the work. He uses his martial arts to help make the class more lively during COVID. He was also asked to bring in his wife's pets. He cares deeply about his students and let us redo work.

He cares.

He does some wicked martial arts in his class. He may be large but he can move and break boards, concrete, and bricks unlike any other professor. He tries to educate and entertain at the same time. His class doesn't seem tough at the end but when you see all that you have accomplished it is a lot. Ethical leadership and research are key words.

Where else can you earn extra credit for allowing your paper to be presented at Oxford or Cambridge? He entertains while educating. Breaks are breathtaking. Cookies great

The most disorganized, meaningless class I've ever taken. I wish I could ask for a refund or be paid for all the constant stress he put us through for 5 months. We had approximately 3-4 things due EVERY WEEK. Irrelevant and excruciatingly long surveys that you may have to re-do 3 times. 10 min presentation/ share with group but write 16 page paper!

He lost his mind over the pandemic. The most amount of work you will ever do for a class. Never witnessed anything like this in my 30yrs of life. The assignments and submissions, which are on various websites, due almost daily- no organization or calendar to follow. I dont care that he is friendly or that people who aren't busy find this an easy A.

So far as of Mar 31 in Spring semester, I have counted 40 different submissions in this class- including a game played every 2 days, exams, surveys (hours long and needs repeats)& "active assignments" for participation. This teacher seems to think all you do all semester long is take his one course and no other work to do. Unfair and unreasonable.

As someone who actually COMPLETED this class I took a look at the syllabus and there are 52 assignments. There were fewer when I took it last semester but it appears that the time needed to complete them would be less. NONE of his surveys take an hour. Most assignments take about a minute. Attend class, do the work, or take someone else.

Im am taking 18 hours this spring semester and the class which I thought was an easy A is giving me the hardest time. I am taking this class while taking tough classes like Advanced Calculus, Discrete Math, comp sci and a finance seminar. Way too many busy work like BSG that leads to no where. During a pandemic when people are already struggling?!

Professor Carraher is an enigma, and you probably will never find another class like this at UTD. He goes out of his way to advance the careers of his students (Guest speakers and professional development opportunities), and he is very lenient with his grading and due dates. Do the work and you get an A. Lots of time consuming (But easy) HW.

This is an easy A class. The BSG game is pretty fun and engaging. His assignments consists of mostly surveys. His exams are easy and he offers plenty of extra credit or ways to get an A. The TAs, especially Sean, are fantastic. They're always helpful. Research is pushed a lot through the prof, TA, and speakers - making it feel like a cult at times.

His class is filled with surveys that can take up to one hour. The surveys are done mainly every class and you have to redo it if you fail it. Not a big fan of his teaching styles since he just reads off a PowerPoint and doesn't teach anything new. Not the worst teacher but definitely requires lots of long surveys.
