Likes to go through the concepts in depth and make them applicable to other fields of study. Welcomes questions/group discussion and is very passionate about the material. Worksheets are far harder than the class material. MIdterm was fair, the final exam was brutal. MASC precalc/postcalc with Margie is highly recommended if you want a good grade
He is an amazing prof! He is very genuine! Very accessible, in fact he met with me every week outside of office hours to explain what I didn't understand. It is a harder course as you need to know your math inside and out. There is 2 midterms, 1 final, a group math fair project and active participation marks.
Shawn is great! Love his shiny head it makes my future brighter. He makes math fun and interesting and he loves his class. If you have a hard time learning the concept, he'll take his time after classes to make sure you understand as long as you reach out to him. I hated math but Shawn made me love it
Mr Shawn is amazing, I was fortunate to have him as my prof. He responds to emails so fast and is easily accessible. He cares far more about actually learning than grades, and is a fair marker. I was worried going into the class because I hadn't done math in a long time, but IF you put in the effort and practice you will do so well. Take his class!
Shaw is not only a great prof, but a wonderful guy as well. I absolutely hated math going into this course, but his love towards the subject, passion for teaching and fun attitude really made the class, and subject, one of my new favourites! He really engages with his students, and is awesome with answering questions in office hours, and by email.
Shawn was a great prof, this math class was quite weird because it's designed for elementary, but he always was willing to help and explain things differently if needed! He gives a lot of homework assignments but they were SO helpful, and good prep for exams. The only thing is that his exams are pretty tough.
Shawn is the man. Seriously best prof I've ever had. Friendly, helpful and he goes deep for those derivatives. Posts notes, chill, funny, and super smart. Get to know him, just walk up and talk to him. He loves to gas people up though. He's seriously awesome, and he has a cool scar near his chin.
Very hard to follow his lecture. If you want to go back and study your notes you wont find any of them helpful.
Math isn't my strongest subject, taking Shawn was one of my biggest regrets. He's very knowledgable, but if you struggle I wouldn't recommend him. His notes are disorganized and he doesn't do many practice questions in class which are similar to his exams, so I spent most of my time in the math help room trying to understand what was going on.
A great teacher, make sure to use office hours for extra help. Made all the difference for me!
Shawn was an amazing professor! Math is not my strong suit, but he made this class super fun and I didnt totally hate being at the school for 9am. If you show up to class and do the homework, the concepts are easy to grasp, and if you dont get them then he always has office hours. He even made himself accessible outside office hours. Great prof!!
Hands down the best professor I have ever had! Made class exciting and enjoyable, brought humor in to break up the content. Math is difficult for me but he made the class seem like a breeze, also seems to genuinely care about his students and their success which I find rare at the uofa. Highly recommend his classes!
Its hard to form a final opinion about Shawns class. Midterms were simple, I went into the final exam with a 4.0 but came out with a B since the final was so much more difficult. He was a great, funny person and was always willing to help when you needed it but sometimes would skip steps in questions during lectures leaving us all very confused.
I had him for Math 160, He was super helpful and I always had fun in his classes, I didnt miss one. He also made a few classes only for studying and catching up. He was always honest!
Tests and homework nothing like the examples done in class. When you show up to office hours he still does not give much help and acts like you should just know how to do all the problems. The good thing is he posts his notes but they arent really clear and kind of messy
Shawn was an amazing prof! Went above and beyond. Would explain in different ways if it did not make sense to me. He makes class exciting and I enjoy math now. Math doesnt come easy to me but he takes an approach as the questions are solvable and fun, not a chore. Honestly if you love math or struggle with Math, take Shawn!
Shawn did well at making sure to explain concepts. I did great on the quizzes and midterms, then there was the final exam. The final was riddles, that i could make no connection to what was learned in class. A heavily weighted final too. Didnt get to show what i spent SO much time studying because of the riddles. Never been so disappointed.
HANDS DOWN THE WORST PROF I'VE EVER HAD!! I feel bad for anyone that has to take this class! He was no help whatsoever! When you need help he basically tells you to just "try harder!" He provided YouTube videos for most of the course, then expects you to know everything! I hate this class with my whole heart! If i couldi would rate 0/5
This class has a crazy amount of work, and because it's online you're basically teaching yourself. The prof just provides youtube videos that other people created. He was extremely rude, condescending, and made you feel stupid for asking questions. I dropped it halfway through the semester because it was giving me extreme anxiety
It was online due to covid and I found Shawn could have put more effort into the help of his students. Not many practice questions and no zoom lectures. The whole class was basically asynchronous and when I went to his optional zoom calls there would be many other students ahead of me for questions. I felt alone in his class needing help.
Worst Prof ever. He made us teach ourselves everything with no help and provided very few practice problems. Attendance in class was optional. The few lectures I did attend he did not use time effectively. During one lecture he was literally driving while doing the zoom call. Also made tons of mistakes in his math tutorial videos. Unfair exams also
Shawn, while a very light spirited person, is not a good prof. Class was online and he provided little to any help. Always seemed to complicate concepts more when asking for help. Quizzes and homework were nothing like practice questions.
You're forced to entirely teach yourself the material and his office hours are disorganized and entirely unhelpful because he'll launch into a spiel about how he "has sympathy" for remote students and how "university's hard" without answering the questions, or he'll overcomplicate the solutions entirely and leave you more confused than before.
Just never gave clear answers, and if you mess up the smallest little thing on a project you lose marks you shouldn't have, even when all the work is neat and correct. The assignments were so much harder than the actual problems done on the class videos. Avoid if you can
The class was mostly asynchronous, and you basically had to teach yourself all the modules by watching his videos, which could sometimes be confusing. I didn't attend many zooms calls but the ones I did he overcomplicated his explanations which confused me even more. The problem on the quizzes were a little harder than practice questions he gave.
This is the worst course I've ever taken. You teach yourself the entire course, lose marks for irrelevant mistakes, and test questions are nothing like any of the practice he assigns. I found his comments towards other students and on exams to be borderline rude, and in no way constructive or helpful. He makes it clear he doesn't care either.
Shawn is one of those people who is so smart they do everything in their head and are unable to explain their steps because they are just so smart. This class was mostly asynchronous and the zoom meetings that I did attend, he made everything more complicated and was rude to students asking questions. I taught myself the entire course. Worst class.
Shawn had good reviews in person, however online is a different story. He was not very clear when we went for help with things we did not understand. He was often rude and sometimes makes you second guess your ability as a teacher. Made the mandatory Competency Exam extra stressful. Often wasn't even sure of his own answers when explaining concepts
He would belittle students for not understanding a math concept. Yet would make tons of mistakes in his own video tutorials. Bruh...
Honestly, I don't know what the other reviews are saying. Shawn is amazing. He genuinely wants the class to do well.. yes at times he is a bit confusing but everyone is while talking sometimes as well. He picked his kid up from school cause of COVID.. 1 day! Give the guy a break. He is very generous in the marking and is always there to talk to.
Shawn was a really genuine guy and you could tell he truly cared about his students. He wants you to learn from mistakes if you make them and apply your knowledge in exams. His final was not riddles, it was word problems that require you to think a little harder. Overall I really recommend him as a prof. The competency exam that is basic math.
Shawn took the time 3 days a week to answer students' questions and was always caring toward his students. The course requires work as does any math course and that is given. He made resources accessible early to understand ahead of time. He graded very fairly on quizzes and took the time to explain where you went wrong. I would highly recommend.
Extremely enthusiastic about math and dedicated to helping students learn. He would often stay for an hour or so past the end of official class time to help students with questions. He gave MANY chances to pass the MCE (K-9 math), and is a really fair marker (only is critical with BEDMAS errors). Least stressful university math experience ever!
Great person and cares about his students greatly. However I highly recommend making friends because the ways he explains questions can be confusing and having friends to clarify helped lots. he would also stay in lectures for 3 hours answering peoples questions meaning he values our questions more than his own time.
Shawn is super passionate about Math! He can be blunt but is honestly super caring and dedicated. Online classes are not everyone's cup of tea but Shawn structured it in a way that class hours were specifically for questions about the material, which I really liked. He is a fair marker as he cares more about the process than the product.
Shawn was a decent teacher. He was a little rude sometimes and took off marks because of silly things like taking photos at the wrong angle. However I can tell he's really passionate about math and had so many zoom calls to help out people who had questions. I got used to it but found the beginning was hard because you learn on your own time.
He is honestly a really good professor. Obviously because of online learning and it being an asynchronous course, we had to learn a lot on our on, but Shawn was extremely helpful. He would meet 3 times a week and even stay when it went past class time just to answer questions. He is a very fair marker. I highly recommend him!
Part 1: Shawn went out of his way to always help his students. The class was all asynchronous and you had the responsibility to teach yourself. Not going to lie it was difficult at the beginning, however Shawn had office hours during regular class time and some days he went over class time to stay with his students to help them out.
Shawn was dealt with bad cards as we converted to online school. However, he adapted well and was able to be a really good professor. At times he was challenging and would come off blunt, but at the end of the day, he truly cared about his students and wants to help them succeed. He would often stay after hours in order to help us.
Taking this class online involved teaching yourself everything and zoom meetings to ask questions. Shawn was often dismissive of, or rude about questions though. He is generally a pretty nice marker but can take off marks for little things like neatness or photo quality. I would definitely not take another class with him but it was bearable.
Would not recommend
The transition was hard at first but adapting to the asynchronous class was easier as time passed. Learning was mostly self-directed, but Shawn provided video solutions to the homework and generously answered questions during office hours. There was also an opportunity for students to complete an optional project to reduce the weight of the final.
This course overall wasn't hard but Prof. Desaulniers is a very hard grader. I received a 60 something percent on a test for the answer not being written "pretty" enough. It was completely legible and the answer was correct but I only got 3/5 marks because he thought the way I did the question was "disorganized" even though it was all there.
Shawn made sure that i had the skills to pass this course even though math does not come easily to me. He was a hard marker if there was BEDMAS errors, but other than that he was very generous with part marks. One test I got 3/4 questions wrong and still got a 70% because of my part marks in my partial solutions. He went above and beyond
This class has 5 modules. Prof doesnt teach. He does have a weekly session for questions, however, this course being a math class makes it difficult to really grasp the content of units in a q&a session. This course has a lot of puzzle solving. You need to write everything clearly and make it obvious as to what is what to get full marks.
Shawn was great! I would guess people giving low marks struggle with math generally. I really like math this class was a breeze! Great that i could work at my own pace. I rarely attended zooms, the odd email always answered my questions. Tests were very fair, marking was fair. As an education based math it makes sense that he graded on tidiness too
This was the hardest course I ever had to take and ended up dropping which I've never had to do before. He was rude, unhelpful and the modules he gets you to do do not match his exams, so you could study for hours and still have no idea what you were doing on the exams. Avoid.
Im usually really good at math, but Im always lost in his lectures as he teaches and mixes multiple concepts at once. He barely does any simple questions to understand something and just skips right to the hard ones. You have math homework due every Tuesday and Thursday and its very hard. But the midterm and final had medium level questions.
Lectures are so confusing as we learn so many concepts at once and there's barely any examples or practice. Two assignments due every week and a lot of times the questions are way tougher than the few examples in class.
Shawn was very bad at explaining concepts and when questions arose from students he would often say that we had to move on. I honestly had to rely on classmates and youtube videos for me to understand concepts and to pass the class.
These people are nuts. Shawn was an awesome professor, really spent the time ensuring he was familiar enough with the material to teach it. A lot of time spent explaining things conceptually so you understand the why and how of it as opposed to replicating a memorized process.
Heading into this semester I was dreading this class seeing as this page wasn't glowing with reviews; however, with the semester ending, I'm not too sure who these other people had. He was caring, outgoing, always asked if we understood stuff, gave easy exams and assignments that tested covered material and was easy to get into contact with. A+prof
Shawn's lectures and explanations are beyond confusing and do not do much to help you understand the class concepts. His office hours are quite mediocre and he expects you to understand most of the material already. Classes are boring and online notes are messy and vague. I would steer clear from this prof if you ever decide to take this course.
Shawn is a good guy and cares about his students but he goes very fast in class and sometimes misses going over questions that will be on the homework. Organic chemistry tutor basically saved me in this class. He also doesnt respond to your emails sometimes which is really annoying.
Terrible, absolutely terrible. Goes extremely fast in lectures, often making multiple mistakes every class. Does not help you solve the problems and often just asks you to solve them, and then does not go over it. Extremely hard to follow along, I tried my best to understand his lectures and notes, but ultimately was unable to.
I honestly don't know what to say... I went from loving Calculus in High School to hating it now, and it's nearly the same course. Shawn has made everything much more confusing and very difficult to follow. He's hard to understand in lectures and uses weird diagrams. I don't think we got through a single question from start-to-finish in class.
As a math major student, his lecture was so informative and nice. He goes deep in explaining the concept of calculus, which I really enjoyed. However, I see other students' frustration on RMP, which is kind of understandable, as math 154 is basically for art students. Nevertheless, the way he teaches would be super beneficial if you like math.
Went from loving high school calculus to despising university level math. He flew through lectures; leaving you with problems to do on your own but NO notes to follow along with. His lectures were confusing, often leaving you with a ton of extra information that was not useful in anyway. This class honestly wrecked my first experience of universit
Looking back after I got my grade, I still think Shawn is a great guy. You can even chit chat with him via email and in-person. VERY APPROACHABLE and Friendly. I would buy him a beer personally. He also gives students valuable feedback. 5/5 recommended.
Shawn is a very nice guy, it's clear he wants his students to do well. However, he is not fit to teach a first-year calculus course. He teaches the class as if you should already know everything. If you aren't yet confident in your calculus skills I would strongly recommend taking the class with a different prof.
Desaulniers was amazing! He was very approachable with accessible office hours, and good caring for his students. The course was considerably hard and challenging, but he made the class fair. Make sure you keep up with the lectures and do all the assignments. I would definitely recommend him for MATH 216.
This is one of the most challenging math courses I have taken(The level of difficulty of this course is 4/5 tho). But Dr. Shawn made the course intriguing. He was so helpful with homework or any lecture questions during his office hours. Take this course with him if you can.
he goes so fast, it's actually not funny. if you know your basics, you'd probably be okay. otherwise, get ready to be incredibly confused and feel so behind. attendance isn't necessarily mandatory, but if you miss a class, you'll be lost.
Never explains any of his answers and goes over each problem so quickly. Nobody can keep up because he scribbles it onto his iPad and then expects us to just understand.
Shawn is amazing. He is always available to talk, even outside of office hours. He made homework available throughout the sem with no due date, and most of our mark came from math fair, homework, and his fun fridays. I think those leaving bad reviews might not have experienced a bad math prof, how can you be mad when 35% of your grade is free.
Very nice guy but maybe not fit to be a professor. Doesn't provide videos for lectures so when I'm lost on a concept and I try to look at his notes it wouldn't make any sense because they were very unclear. He also gives lots of assignments, homework, and projects while still making the final 45%. He is also a harsh marker.
I found this class very difficult to follow along with. His notes are unclear and he moves very quickly during the lectures. Some concepts that were covered in this class are not in line with the kindergarten to grade 7 curriculum as he says, such as teaching us level 30 probability.
convinced that the bad ratings are from 1st years who either don't understand math or haven't had a bad professor and are used to high school. Shawn is easily one of the best math profs at Uofa.
Shawn is a very nice guy! He really cares about his students, always telling us to take breaks and stay physically healthy. There is weekly homework, but you have all semester to finish and unlimited attempts. Lots of easy marks doing fun math Friday and a math fair. Great class!
I am absolutely awful at math, and had to try very hard in this course but Shawn tries his hardest to help everyone. The week before our final he offered office hours/ math help 3 hours a day, every day. I have never had a professor who was so invested in the success of his students.
i quite liked shawn's class. some peer's struggled with his teaching methods but i also believe this is due to the introduction of Fun Fridays. At first, these days seem to be optional, however the games relate to the following weeks course work. DO NOT SKIP THESE. make sure you complete homework assignments too!
He was very kind and made the classes fun with group participation and there were lots of free marks given to us but much help outside of the class which made it hard. There were three exams given to us, the two midterms and the final. The midterms were only 10% each which was nice, but the final was 45% of our grade which was really frustrating.
Shawn is a great guy. Very genuine, and put in the time to ensure student success. Not a fan of math and was worried about failing, but he helped me in getting through.
Shawn is awesome! I am grateful that I got to take this course with him. I did not get amazing marks, but that's my fault. He went above and beyond to help us, especially during exams. He set up extra office hours and always asked for feedback. The only con is the final worth 45%. I would say the rest 55% of the grade is pretty easily achievable.
Shawn was a great professor, I was nervous for this class because I haven't done math for years and I find math extremely challenging. But Shawn is a great teacher, and really cares about student understanding and success. If you do the homework, and seek help when you need it, you have a pretty good chance of being successful in this course.
Shawn was a great professor; I'm convinced that any poor ratings for him are from students who did not put in the effort, he will thoroughly go over any questions students may have in the 6 hours of extra help time he offered to the class. It's worth noting that these help sessions were often utilized by the same 10-15 students in a class of 150.
I learned a lot in this class, and Shawn is a great teacher, but the final is worth 45%, so that's a lot of pressure!
Shawn is a great professor, he really cares about the success of his students. I would highly recommend him for this class.
Don't really get the hype around this guy. He's funny, tries hard, but I don't see him as a good prof. Not really approachable during office hours or after class even though he explicitly told students to ask him about a particular problem. Good vibes but mid prof.
He's okay, not a great prof tho.
Lectures were overall decent but occasionally hard to follow. Although we (mostly) followed a textbook, we didn't have access to notes (except student written notes posted >2 weeks after the lecture). Assignments also often did not have posted solutions. There was lots of opportunity for feedback and lots of office hours.
If you have to take 216, take it with Shawn. This class is difficult and he truly is the best professor to take this class with. He is very kind and responds to emails thoroughly and is always wanting to help. He makes sure that he is accessible for all of his students. Truly one of the best professors in the math department.
He was a horrible prof. Did not explain anything. If people asked questions he would respond with "Do you even come to class?" or "How do you not understand this?" He was not approachable at all. Does not write clear notes. Test questions are not even close to the same level as his examples.
Shawn was an okay professor overall. Those who complain likely did not attend class regularly and missed key concepts. He tried to make math fun with Fun Fridays and projects. Course weighting was good but the 45% final is heavy. Lots of exam prep/help was available, he cares about student success (especially those who put the work in).
Even though this course is labeled elementary math, it is not easy. When asking Shawn a question he is super judgmental. He decided a month ago he's done answering emails, and he never got back to me all semester. The TA's have no idea what he's teaching either. VERY CONFUSING. The final had almost nothing to do with what we learnt. Very unfair.
The final was way harder than any of the other exams and included a question for which no possible answer existed. Asking this prof a question and getting a clear answer was impossible. The class itself isn't hard if you show up, do the homework, and study but the final was very hard.
Final exam had questions that we never learned in class. He was quite rude when answering questions, and has not imputed 25% of our grade before the final...and still has not. No one knew going into the final what we needed to get a grade we were wanting.
Shawn is the best of the best. He is genuinely kind and caring. His excitement towards math is contagious. If you go to class and do the homework you'll be fine. The final exam was ridiculously hard this term though. Based on the midterm I do know he grades generously as long as you explain your reasoning well, so hopefully it'll be okay!
He seemed stand offish and I felt scared asking him questions and he would almost answer in a way that makes you feel dumb. He thinks it's “easy” so everyone should think it's easy too. The final was worth 45%, and included things not discussed in class. He also gets marks up super late, I still have not received a final mark for this class.
I'm in utter disbelief and frustration with this professor. 25% of our grade is still missing on top of our grade for the final that is worth 45%. He has multiple TA's and the assignments he is marking are very easy… not a fan of profs who take this long to mark assignments, especially such a big portion
AWFUL CLASS. He took until the very end of the term to mark all assignments, even ones submitted in September, despite having multiple TA's. He said he had "given up" on responding to emails and that you would have to go to office hours if you had a question yet, when I went to his posted office hours, he was not there. Final was HARD.
A LOT of great ways to boost your mark. Teaches things you learned in school but introduces the concepts behind it or just another way to solve it. All notes are available online. Lots of homework but a flexible due date until the end of the semester.
One of my top professors at UofA I've ever had. Makes you think deeply.
Took real analysis with him. Most genuine prof I've ever had. wants his students to succeed.
People complain about him, but in my opinion he was a pretty good lecturer and very nice and accessible and good at answering questions in office hours. The course was kind of tough, especially at first, and grading took a long time, but I don't think that was in his control. He was one of the best professors teaching this class that semester.
