This has got to be one of the best and coolest history teacher I have had, im defenately taking 152 with him! He is very nice and has a great carefree attitude. His tests are easy and if you take notes then passing is not a problem.
Very cool guy! laid back, easy going sexy!
Shawn is by far the best professor you will ever have to learn about History or any other subject. He truly cares if you learn about how we have become who we are, as well as wanting you to have fun in the process. The absolute best.
He's a funny guy who teaches a history class. He makes it more interesting.
You won't find a proffessor who wants you to actually learn the information more then Dry. He makes it interesting and fun by keeping you involved.
S. Dry is one of the most clear profs that i have had. He tries to put things into a prospective so that the student can understand. I would highly recommend this class to any student. If willing to put forth some effort you'll do fine!
Really knows his stuff and makes learning history fun and isn't bad on the eyes either. Would take him in the future. Wish I could find another teacher as good as him.
Take him, you'll enjoy it.
awesome, very interesting and fun
This is the funnest teacher ever! I loved learning history from him he made the topic so fun! Plus he has killer funny comments constanlty to tell that will make you laugh your ass off. Take him plus he has this hippie hottness to him ouch!
his class is awesome. it requires a lot of work but it is worth it.
He will keep you the whole class. He has a nice syllabus. Alot of reading and his reading questions don't help with your daily quizes are on. Exams are easy but quizes and participation make up most of your grade and that depens if he likes you or not!
I have had better teachers than him. he thinks he can teach better than anyone but he really sucks. Teaches aruond students' questions and not his own wisdom. DON NOT TAKE HIM
Shawn keeps the class for the whole class period. That is what I paid my tuition for. Unfortunately some students like teachers who only keep classes part of the required time and resent those instructor who don't. Very good instructor and I wasn't very excited about taking this required course.
Shawn Dry is an EXCELLENT teacher. It's too bad the Sad Face Comment person (11-8-04) even bothered to rate Mr. Dry. This person obviously needs to focus his/her energy on his/her Grammar skills rather than being pissy about a Prof. who makes you WORK for you education!
Shawn Dry is an awesome teacher! He makes what I thought would be a boring subject totally interesting. He wants you to interact which can be hard at first, but it's so much more interesting than a straight lecture. I highly recommend this class.
best teacher ever. this man actually knows how to have fun by teaching, and he knows what he is talking about.
I have him for history 152 and Greek Mythology. He requires a lot of reading and actually makes you work for your grade. Wow, isn't it nice to know there are teachers out there who still actually care about making you learn and better yet they make you think (novel idea). He's wonderful/take him.
very good teacher (funny and intelligent all in one :)) makes you work but it is worth it. i would highly suggest taking him.
Shawn is a great teacher. very clear with his message, very helpful, and he makes the class interesting to go to every week. Even when i didnt have to go to class, i still would just to get a good laugh, and behold- he taught in the process. if he could teach all my classes, i would allow it.
excellant teacher, takes great interest in the lives of students
Knows what he is talking about and expects you to know also. This prof is big on dates so make sure you are too. Class was fun at times but mostly I had a hard time staying awake.
Take this class if you want an easy A but if you actually want to learn, then this class isn't for you and he expects you to write huge essays for his tests which are all essays anyway but he expects each answer in depth
This class is not an easy A. Show up and read and study for tests. He is a good professor. If you do good on your first 3 tests you dont have to take the fourth, so he gives you break at the end.
Best history teacher/teacher in general you'll ever have in your life. You seriously have to take him, hes THE JAM!!!!!!! Don't let anyone tell you hes too hard, because really hes not if you just study. Finally, a history class where you actually LEARN, and he actually makes it fun. Amazing guy.
Shawn is an awesome teacher. The class is involved and interesting. SHOW UP, stay the entire time, do the reading and take good notes. The tests are lengthy, but if you took good notes you'll do fine. Fun class.
Most excellent Prof - makes History fun - Cares about what he does and about his students!
One of the BEST profs I've ever had. Shawn cares about his students and teaching them. Very insightful, teaching is very clear, NOT AN EASY A, but not a hard one either. If you study, take notes, and participate you've got an A. Be prepared for essays. Just know the subject backwards & forwards.
I LOVE SHAWN, HE'S CHALLENGING YET MAKES CLASS ENTERTAINING, I'VE HAD HIM FOR 3 CLASSES AND I'LL TAKE EM' AGAIN IF I GET THE CHANCE.
SERIOUSLY THE BEST PROF!!! You are missing out if you don't take one of Shawn's classes. NOT AN EASY A, but don't let that scare you! Show up to class, participate, TAKE NOTES, & be ready for essays. Cares about students & really teaches you so you know the subject. VERY INTERESTING & FUN class. This guy knows how to teach, a rarity unfortunately!!
One of the GREATEST TEACHERS anyone will ever come across. Just read all the other comments former students are leaving, hes that good! Even if you dont like history and just need this class for whatever, I say take him, its a great college experince. He has two exams, only counts one with the best grade, and once a class reading quizs. Good times!
everyone should take this teacher. especially if you are like me and HATE history
He was hilarious, and I actually enjoyed going to class. He knew everyone by name, and has this insane death wish for his cat (also hilarious). By the time his class is over you will know more about the funny anecdotes he has at home then you will about the class.
This was a class on Greek Mythology. It was very good, you learn a lot, but you write five papers and no tests. He grades the papers very hard and is a very challanging course, but was very fun. If you've never had Shawn for a class before you really should take him. Very smart, and very interesting. You find yourself wanting to go to class.
I hate History more than any other class out there but this History class was the best class that I have had yet at College. Guaranteed to keep you awake and entertained, and he knows his stuff. Listen to the other comments...He is that good.
I hate history, but sean is cool as a damn fan!!! He knows his stuff, but he makes history sooo entertaining.I would recommend anyone to to his class!
Best teacher i've ever had. he's so funny and he really knows his stuff. I would recomend him to anyone.
never knew history is so much fun. the best professor I ever had.
great and easy teacher
Best teacher I've had all year. Lots of fun and actually makes you retain information you learn. Highly recomended.
He's the teacher who helped me be convinced to go into history and teaching it. He isn't easy, but you can get a good grade if you apply yourself. I also like how he doesn't wear a suit.
hes a funny guy. hes cool, and isnt afraid of cursing in class, which makes things funny. hes real interactive. if u dont want to do group stuff, or be called on, do NOT take him. he gives u a participation grade every day based on comments u make in class. tests are in blue books, not scantrons. so if u like essays then hes ur guy. i reccomend him
A class that requires interactiveness from the student, participation is graded on a daily basis pending on the number of coments/ questions you ask during class. A fair amount of work is required, but if you do the readings, you should have no truble in the class.
class is hard if you do not apply yourself but his teaching style makes the class go by faster and easier to remember everything
Very entertaining awesome class
Best calss room experience. I wish all my teachers were like him. THE BEST
He's definitely a little hard!! He's good but HARD!! and it's only because I don't know much about HIS and he knows alot and he has conversations in class and I just get CONFUSED! but he's good at what he does, and he loves being an ****!! :)
He's a good teacher. Extremely funny. He tells it like it is. Swears so if you don't like that don't take him. He assigns a lot of reading and test are memorization but he's very good and fun.
BEST! If you are a PSY or SOC major, take this guy!MUST do NOT miss this chance!
I took Dry for an ancient history class back in 1999. I still remember him being an extremely smart, interesting, engaging instructor. He had long hair back then, and seemed quite young. He knows his material. He taught most of my class without any notes - just knew the material off the top of his head. One of my favorite instructors ever!
By far the best professor that has ever taught me. He was able to make a 4 hour class fly by while actually making ancient history(history upto 1500)relevant. He's very smart and has the credentials to teach almost anywhere (phD from umich)Workload is a bit heavy and one should be thorough when answering questions. Asking questions definently helps
Awesome teacher, he is the reason why school is cool. Do not take him if you are quiet shy or lazy.
Professor Dry is great at teaching, he is very funny, and he is quite interesting. Unfortunately his grading procedures are very subjective. Every day you recieve a participation grade which can be quite discriminatory and should be illegal. The three tests are worth 20% of your grade leaving him plenty of room to ruin your grade if he dislikes you
this guy is halarious and his class flies by even though its 4 hours long. but i wont lie he grades pretty hard and you have to study alot for this class because u have a quiz everyday.. but if you dont mind studing youll do really good in this class. plus the guys hilarious
Very fun teacher. His enthusiasm really gets you into what he is talking about. He has hands on discussions which are a lot of fun. I wish all of my teachers would teach like him.
The consensus is right. Hard but fun. I learned a great deal.
The essay Quizes EVERY DAY were like torture, but I did learn alot. He keeps the class fun and interesting. Ask questions & participate, you'll do fine. I totally bombed one of the exams (by the way are online, timed & in essay form, so if your computer crashes, your screwed) But I still got an A in the class since the exams are only 10% each.
Contemporary World is a hard class. You have to be on blackboard everyday, not to mention reading 30 or so pages in the book. For the paper, it used Chicago style, so be prepared to learn new style of writing. I got an A because I worked extremely hard, you have to. It is a fun class though, and very entertaining. Shawn nontheless is a good teacher
Dry is a very cool, fun guy, and is very well educated in what he teaches, you will almost never catch him off guard with a question regarding his class. however, he grades hard, and in HIS-1510/1520 you have to read 10-30pgs. 2 times a week, and you are quizzed over it.
Great prof!!!Class is always interesting. There is a lot of reading along with a quiz over it 2x a week.He grades participation so just pay attention and ask questions/make comments.Makes it very clear what he wants on quizzes and exams.I would highly recommend him and would take his class just for fun.
The first time I took his class I def. failed it.. But that was because I didn't do the readings, and honestly I have no interest in history so I had no clue as to what he was talking about. The 2nd time I knew I what I did wrong, MUST read the daily readings for the quizzes. Ask questions and be involved cuz the tests are all Essay. GoodPersonTho!
this class is pretty easy, but the daily quizes and 30 page readings twice a week get really annoying and 40% of your grade is participation so you have to be involved in the disscusions and ask a lot of questions.
Great prof. Really nice and fun class for never taking a prior history class and having no interest in it. I'd take his class again.
Do the reading, you need them for the quizes and exams. If you like hearing about how women aren't as awesome as men, he's your prof. His grading is very subjective, but if you do well on the reading quizes and exams you can still pass the class even if he gives you bad participation grades
Most of your grade is participation, great! However, his scale is purely arbitrary, or biased. Make 6 analytical comments and further discussion by an "older" student= B. 2 recapping comments by 20-yr-old=A. One wk.4 comments gets an A, another wk. 8 comments gets a B-but dont talk too much...or get downgraded for hogging the convo. Beware.
Dry is one of the best professors for the subject of history. You will learn critical thinking, you will learn to write essays, and you will learn constructive debate. People complain that he's hard? This is college. And he is giving us an experience worth our time, money, and futures. If I could, I'd take him for every history course. Oneofthebest
Reading quizzes are more like tests, very detailed tests. He knows his stuff, I'll give you that but doesn't care if we know it before we're tested on it. Plus he makes no bones that he doesn't care about his students. He's purposely rude, swears A LOT, burps, and is demeaning to the class. I shouldn't spend my money to listen to "boy" behavior.
Thinks he is God's gift to the Earth, always believing he is right and charming. He is not. He's rude, swears more than is necessary, has power trips with your grades, runs his classroom like you're still in high school and is very ****. He does not like strong women, and constantly talks about how much he dislikes spending time with his family.
do your reading and do good on ur quizes. participate once in a while. ull be set. reading is time consuming and so are the tests. very interesting teacher and teaches well.
If you want a professor who will give you multiple choice exams, Dry himself will tell you to look somewhere else. If you want a real education in history, he's the guy for you. He doesn't lecture but rather allows the class to participate and injects humor into the course. I would definitely take 1520 with him and recommend him to others!
BEST PROF EVER. You will learn so many critical thinking and reading techniques. Has been teaching for 14 years, still a fun guy at heart. You'll work hard, but you'll learn a lot of good techniques and learn a lot of new things about history. Don't be put off by the critical comments here. This is college: you work hard! He's one of the best!
Shawn is a WONDERFUL professor. I have never had such a great time in history class. He makes you read and take exams. Be prepared to work hard but be rewarded with a fun class, knowledge of history, and a phenomenal teacher. I would definitely take more classes with him. I can't say enough great things about Shawn and his teaching style.
People say he is rude, crude and demeaning, and that is what makes class fun. A lot of what he says is sarcastic and I think what he tries to teach is to not be so uptight and sensitive. He is an open-minded individual and his classes often involve some really great discussions. All that said, there is a lot of work, but its worth the effort.
Not much different than a university class. Dry's essay quizes force you to read the book and understand it. The class discussions make understanding the material very easy. If these skills aren't learned early, one will never make it in college. People that complain about Dry are lazy, he is preparing you for college work and real life. Work = A
Professor Dry is an excellent instructor. Dry teaches his class at a college level, thus you should be prepared to do some work. If one gets a bad grade on participation or essays, it?s because one did not do the assigned reading, Dry knows this by the stupid (ignorant) comments people make in class. If you do the reading, you will do well.
Great overall instructor. Comfortable learning atmosphere along with reasonable requirements. Easiest way to pass his class is to just open your mind and think.
Very Smart Professor. Knows his stuff and is definitely has a new approach to teaching. Work hard in this class and there is no reason not to do well. Textbook readings are the hardest part of the class. The class discussion is the best part. I highly recommend taking Prof Dry's class atleast once.
I appreciate working hard & Dry running class like a university course- its his 'tude that sucks. He regulates when you go to the restroom, takes off pts for looking out the window, cracks jokes about women's "boobies" and uses the f-word & others, consistently (a hallmark of ignorant insecure vocab). Dry loves & knows history: lose the power trip
Not hard, just very busy. Its a continuous state of tons of work for this class. True, you'll be treated like you're in third grade, and at times will feel like your in the boys bathroom at a junior high listening to some of his garbage. His love of history is evident, as is his hatred of women & children, as well as his insecurity of self.
This professor wasn't "hard," but his workload was ridiculous. It was required that we post everyday, several times a day, and even made us do work on a national holiday-when the college was closed. He is very intelligent, arrogant, and a bit sarcastic. I love history and I wasn't too fond of his class at all!
Professor Dry is the best!He has a way of teaching that helps you learn. Yes there is work(it's college) & yes he can be a bit vulgar.Just stay on top of the reading.Tests are open book, open notes.Attendance is mandatory but I ended up wanting to go to class just for the discussions!Easy A if you just do the work.I wish all my profs were like Dry.
This teacher was terrible. He grades your tests and says the answers are wrong but does not explain them to you or tell you why they are wrong. If you are late by 1 min you get a zero and his teaching is just terrible. I give him an E- and DO NOT TAKE HIM
I had Professor Dry for HIS 1510 and 1520. I found him as very humorous and insightful. He really gives 110%. He is very passionate about History and goes above and beyond to teach it. He always answers questions as best as possible. He really encourages you to try to understand both sides of every argument and event.
Terrible. He is a misogynistic pig who swears every other word and is generally rude and crude. Participation is everything, and it is entirely subjective to his whims. I like history, so the reading and tests were not impossible, but there was a lot of work involved. Basically, if your want to be verbally abused by a immature man, take his class.
Shawn is not a terrible teacher. His teaching style does not appeal to my learning abilities, but besides that, he is overall an interesting teacher with a different personality than most other teachers. He wants to help the students as much as possible, but there is a lot of work involved in this class.
Hated this professor. He was rude, crude, and immature at times. He uses horrid language and isn't all that fair. Don't ever take him, find something else instead of the class he teaches.
If you like history the reading quizes will be easier. Funny guy. YOU HAVE TO PARTICIPATE to get a good participation grade. BE ON TIME. Dont take any of his jokes to seriously. Hates cats. But overall just do your work and you'll be fine.
A lot of busy work and posting. Over all this class was informative and interesting.
If you love History you will love this class. I have gone back to school after 25 years to learn a new field. Took 1520 last summer and enjoyed his class so much took 1510 this year. There is a daily test every class which covers the reading that you will discuss for that day. A research paper. And 3 exams you take at home. Very enjoyable class.
Shawn is not for the weak of heart or the overly sensitive. He?s unorthodox, but he?s also extremely interesting, knowledgeable and AFFECTIVE. If you really want to learn history, take him. He knows his stuff (and you will too). If your plan is skating through with sketchy attendance, don?t.
Best history teacher I have ever had in my life. The work is hard, but it's worth it. If you love history and want a fun teacher, take Shawn's class.
This guy assigns chapters from the textbook and has reading quizzes EVERY class period; what is this, high school? This class is obviously geared towards freshmen. On the first day.. he says "This class will teach you to read and write".. seriously? Freshmen think he's funny because he curses a lot, but really the class is just a big pain in the...
I think the only people who are giving this guy a good grade are men. He is rude and vulgar and immature. On the first day he jokes about how he will dock points on your assignments if he doesn't like you... but it's not a joke. He really will take points off of attendance and quizzes if he doesn't like you. Unprofessional professor = annoying.
Unorthodox is a great word to use. With that said, Shawn teaches the class in an open forum type atmosphere and gives everybody the opportunity to participate. His classes are NOT easy. I'm guessing the bad ratings came from those who couldn't hack it. That's ok, those are the one's making parking much easier at OCC Auburn Hills by mid-november.
He's a ok teacher for the most part but his class are like taking another english class. If you like writhing papers and have a good amount of study time set aside for this class then by all means take it but if you don't then i would NOT take this class. If someone asked me if he was a good teacher and if they should take the class i would say no.
Shawn is a great professor. If you don't like work then its not for you. he keeps classes interesting and fun and very contempory. Very helpful and cares about his students great sense of humour. If you pass your quizzes and particpate you will pass his class. I've signed up to take his first class and will take as many of his seminar classes as
Overall was a great teacher, definitely knew the material. Engaging and funny, although a little vulgar, he definitely kept the class entertaining and engaging. Contemporary World is NOT for someone who is not willing/able to put in at least an hour a night every night, so if that's you, don't take it. I was one of those and believe me, it's hard.
Very helpful, he makes the class fun and the time flies. I have learned a lot. My sister and I have both taken him and we love him. As Shawn would say...mmmmm that's some good teaching!
Prof. Dry was my very first college professor ever. After finishing his class I can easily say I now feel more prepared to take other courses and he helped in a huge way. His teaching style is unorthodox but it allows students to easily relate to the material. I give Dry an A+ and I would recommend taking one of his classes to anyone considering.
This dude is a straight clown. Funniest teacher you will ever have plus that long hair flow gives him that extra swag. Class is challenging but if u put in the work u will do good. Shawn dry all day errrrday
Worst teacher/professor I've ever had by far, hands down, no questions asked. Absolutely terrible.
The course load is a lot, but Shawn is very upfront about that on the first day of class. Even if you come into this class bc it's a pre-req, but stick through it, you will leave, having a love for it. Be sure to GET ON THE DISCUSSION BOARDS!
Even better experience the second time around. If you take the workload seriously, his classes will make you a better student and person. 'Hands down' one of the best professors ever; it would be a shame to miss out on the opportunity of learning from him.
He is one of the funniest professors that I have ever had. He makes class fun and makes you want to come into class. A negitive though, Is you have a reading quiz every day of class and he grades extremly hard, if you read the pages and you grasp the knowledge your good. Like I said he's hilarious Shawn D til I die baby!
A great professor, his class made me a better student as well as a better overall person. He improved my critical thinking and taught me to question everything always. Anyone can pass his classes if they legitimatly try, and make sure to read the textbook before each class. Without a doubt this man is my favorite prof at OCC
I had Shawn Dry for a summer course, which was a class to remember. This class, However is not for female dogs. Good luck to those who take it. There's a lot of reading and a lot of studying. But guaranteed success if you try :)this class changed my studying skills i am now an official "up all night" college student.
I think Shawn Dry is a really good professor. He's really encouraged me to be active in class dicussions by asking questions. His class has really improved the way I study because now I am starting to get better grades. I think he's actually very helpful for those who can show that they are interested to learn.
I took Shawn for history 1510 and he is by far one of the funniest professors I've ever taken! Like other people on here have said, he's definitely not for the weak of heart, but he makes class interesting and that really helped me learn the material. I would take another class with him in a heartbeat!
I took Shawns Greece class..started with over 30 students ended with 9. Tough class lots of reading but awesome discussions on the classics. His class paticpation style is great and he keeps things moving and is funny. If you do not want to work in class don take it. If you take any of his classes 1510 1520 you will larn and have fun
Worst Prof ever. I have taken a lot of online classes since I started going to occ. This class was to much work for an online class. The group project was awful. We had a full class ended with 8 students. The reading quizs were all essay and we had two hours to take a 6 essay with the final question almost being a paper like question.
Shawn is one of the best teachers I've had in college. He has a great sense of humor and he does a great job of teaching and getting students involved. You have to be diligent about attendance, reading, and doing the work, or else it will significantly hurt your grade. If you never go to class, don't even think about taking his classes. Great guy!
Super cool dude. Awesome hair.
I seriously can't say enough good things about Shawn. He's by far the best college professor I've ever had. You have to do the work, but he totally makes it worth while and fun. You won't regret signing up for his class. Don't take any world history class with anyone but him.
He is probably the greatest professor that I have ever had at OCC... even though I did drop out. Extremely demanding class, but I highly recommend it if you are up for a worthwhile challenege. I just couldn't keep this up with my other classes, definitely wasn't expecting such an intense class. A+ nonetheless
This was one of the hardest classes I have ever taken, and yet it was also one of the best. If you're lazy this isn't the class for you. If you're willing to put in the work and your soul hasn't shattered into a million pieces by the end of the semester, then this class will be extremely rewarding, and you'll come away from it having learned a lot.
Read the syllabus and you won't get "Shawn'd". Best professor I've ever had in my years of schooling. Excellent attitude, extremely intelligent, actively involved. Wouldn't take any history class without him. There's a reason I had him for 3 semesters in a row..
He's an awesome professor. Learned ALOT. Be willing to read and take quizzes and you'll get a good grade
First day off online History class. I hate history and computers. Prof Dry's set up on desire to learn website should be the model for other teachers. He has several helpful videos explaining the sites, most don't. I am excited for this semester. Was worried because summer compressed class but today I am happy
He makes assignments very clear from the first day of class. He sticks to the syllabus pretty much word for word. There is a lot of reading so if you want a good grade you have to do that, I didn't and I didn't do so well but it was no fault but my own. As long as you do the work and pay attention in class you'll do well.
This class requires a lot of work, however he was very clear with his assignments. He was a great teacher and I learned a lot. Beware if you take this class online you will have to make 20 posts a week.
He promotes thought provoking discussions, he keeps it clean and doesn't take a political side, rather plays devils advocate if need be. Pay attention in class, do the readings and you'll do fine. He is pretty chill and helpful.
Shawn's class has been the hardest of my college career so far, however it has also been the most valuable and informative. The class equipped me with countless skills needed not only to succeed academically, but to better understand the world in which we live. This man is serious, dedicated, hilarious, and I looked forward to his class every week.
Professor Dry is a great teacher, he loves history and cares for students. he jokes lot but don't take his jokes seriously. he is nice and open minded. 40 pct of ur grade is participation 30 is quizzes based on readings. i got 50 on like 20 quizzes. there is one research paper and 3 tests but only 2 count syllabus helps, u must work hard to pass.
Prof. Dry is an excellent teacher. I will say, this class is a lot of work. However, if you read adequately, show up and participate in class, and follow directions for testspapers you will succeed! Also, in response to the accusations of misogyny: B.S. I can say with 100% certainty that I did not experience or witness any of this in his class.
There's a reading quiz at the beginning of every class. As long as you do the reading and focus on the questions from the syllabus, you'll get an A on every quiz. There are only 3 exams and they are essay form (Exams are super hard). Shawn's awesome though. Taking 1520 next semester just because of him. I don't even like history much.
Shawn Dry is a great prof. would take any on his classes over and over. Truly a great teacher everything is cut and dry, read the passages and you will pass the quizzes and in turn you will pass the class.
If you like to read 130 pages, get tested on those pages, THEN get taught the material after already being tested... You'll be fine. Its just not for me. Teach me, then test me. Shawn instead could care less about your circumstances, or what you actually gain from his class.
He is a great professor; he knows his material really well and makes it fun and interesting. There was a lot of reading but it was fair ; you get a general idea of the topic before getting lectured about it. Plus, he's really flexible when grading the quizzes in such a way that you can end up with a perfect score. Awesome teacher and great class !
Miss three classes for any reason... you automatically receive an F. Toughest grader. Never saw anyone receive 100% on any assignment/test/quiz ever. Be ready to read at least 50 pgs a week. Difficult reading quiz every class. tough, essay exams. Very egotistical and narcissistic (self-described)n professor. worst teacher I've ever had.
Shawn was/ is a great teacher, especially for someone like me who hates HISTORY. Yes there is a lot of work but isn't that what College is, this is not Jr. High School. I would definitely take another one of his courses.
Shawn Dry expects way too much from students of a community college. There is a quiz at the beginning of each class; each quiz is EXTREMELY difficult. You have to read the material and be an EXPERT on it BEFORE he lectures on it. The exams are not taken during class time. He is a very harsh grader and is not understanding about missing classes.
Shawn, at least in my class, didn't teach at all. He will tell you to read the pages that he assigns (around 30-40 per week) and come to class knowing everything. His lectures consist of just talking about the material we read. No powerpoint or visuals, extremely boring class. TONS and I mean TONS of homework aside from the reading. Have Fun!
Far out the toughest grader I have experienced. Please take my word and don't select this professor. Waste of 4 months of my life and money. Far out the worst professor in the grading department. Lectures are interesting if you want to listen to a hippie turn everything into something sexual. Have fun!
Good class, entertaining. Little bit over the top with relating everything through a sexual metaphor. Good deal of work but fair, not a class to take if you expect a hand out but it wasn't that hard. Small quizzes every class but if you do the reading you'll be fine.
Okay in all honesty Shawn is one of the best professors I've ever had. I absolutely hate history classes and he makes it fun. Yes he gives quizzes before every class, but as long as you answer the reading questions, you'll easily pass them. It's not a hard class, he expects participation from everyone and genuinely cares about our success in school
Assigned reading every night; do it! Don't skimp out on your research paper. Ask a lot of questions, participation matters! He will answer everything you ask,and if you still don't get it, ask again. He is very funny, but strict. It is a tough class if you don't stay on top of it.
Shawn is an amazing professor! He'll definitely make you more excited about history. Class is very interesting, probably the most involved I've ever seen a class be. You HAVE to do the readings, and do them thoroughly! The class is extremely difficult, but so worth it. Taking good notes is also extremely important! They will help you most on exams
If you are ready to take the hardest history class you have ever taken you have chosen correctly because shawn dry is not messing around. He comes off as this hippy cool guy, but he is the exact opposite! He is EXTREMELY strict when it comes to reading, hw, and deadlines! Do yourself a favor and chose another prof. its not worth it with this guy.
Shawn made early civilization a very enjoyable class. He engages his students. He gives you reading quizzes every class so make sure you read the assigned reading. Instead of multiple choice test, you get essay questions. Shawn has a great attitude and is hilarious.
Shawn is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He gives amazing lectures and by the end of the semester, he can make anyone love history. He is hilarious, caring, and a great professor. His exams are the toughest thing I've ever done but they help you improve your writing. Class includes heavy reading & quizzes every day.
Okay, overall cool dude. But if youre gonna take one of his classes, dont. Ive never had so much homework, so many papers, presentations, ect., in one singular semester. Unless your major is geared toward history find another prof. Youll soon find yourself loathing the material. Hours of bs discussion board posts will forever haunt me.
I usually take pre-med classes. I took ap history in high school so I thought this would be a good fit. This guys class is the most difficult class Ive ever taken. Hes a very strict man with a difficult grading process. The only way you could pass this class is if you didnt work at all & this was your only class. Dont take it with him!!
Best class I have taken in my college career. Do your reading and you will do well. Prof. Dry will make you think. The discussions and topics we delved into were super interesting. Although this is a history class, I did not find myself dozing off in class. He has a great personality and his passion for the subject transcends in to the class.
He is the second worst professor at OCC I have ever taken. Too much reading and discussions and his self centered personality is intolerable.
His course was very touch and I had to do more reading than I did in most classes and he gave lousy feedback.
Let me tell you that this class is hard. He assigns a lot of readings & resources for the week. He does not teach AT ALL - I understand that this is an online class but professors usually teach their own material through their own videos. Its very disappointing that he expects so much from his students but he provides 0 teaching. Like come on.
He really does not care about the student he makes the way too hard.
Most online classes provide powerpoints to help you, this class does not. lots of reading and instead of chapter 1, etc.. its pages throughout the entire book; you're constantly flipping to find things. Quizzes are essay form and are suppose to take 3 hours. Doesn't give very good feedback and when you ask a question, he makes you feel stupid.
He is just horrible I have had nightmares about his class and still do.
Absolutely spectacular teacher. He makes learning history fun by having class times more about discussing the past than memorizing names and dates. In fact, we never had to memorize names and dates. There were weekly quizzes, though, so it is definitely a tough class. Worth it!
He gives too much homework and the hardest homework ever. Even harder than homework I have taken at a University.
DONT take it online - it's torture. I had to take a 4.5 hour quiz every week on Saturday, study 4.5 hours to finish. He gives you discussion posts that are nitpicked weekly (6+ hours), along with 3 huge unit projects (3+ hrs) 18hrs/week for an A Im 4.0 student, went to office hrs, put in time/effort, & still had to drop. DONT DO IT TO YOURSELF!
Really boring class taught by a very rude and helpful sloppy teacher. Expects you to it all yourself.
His cclass was hard to understand. Whenever I had trouble tired e-mailing him and going to his office he could not explain he expects books and internet to explain for him. .
Such a boring and really hard class. I have taken much easier courses at universities.
I really disliked the teacher and the way he taught.
THe hardest history class. ever taken. I took higher levels at a university stilll hard but much easier than his.
This is seriously the worst online class that I have ever taken.
His class was stressful and a lot of work.
Lot's of History majors who I know took his classes thought he was hardest professor ever.
This professor is way too tough for me.
Would never recommend this professor to anyone. Absolutely ridiculous.
If you want an education and not just your degree on a silver platter without working for it, than this class is for you. Trust me when I say that you will need the skills it takes to do well in this class after college. We can do difficult things, and every. single. time. we will be better for having done it. You are more capable than you think.
I wouldn't recommend taking this class. You will have to read anywhere from 50-70 pages out of the textbook plus primary resource ever week. Study them for an online quiz that is essay answer only as well as a discussion board. I have two classes left before I graduate with my bachelors and this was the hardest class yet. Save yourself!!!
I wouldn't recommend taking this class. You will have to read anywhere from 50-70 pages out of the textbook plus primary resource ever week. The online quiz takes multiple hours as well. This was the hardest class I've taken, I wouldn't recommend it.
I hated his class and he was a hard grader.
Shawn is one of my favorite professors! You really have to contribute to discussions to get points though. He offers lots of extra credit opportunities and really wants you to pass. He's super passionate and knowledgable and loves to engage students and will always answer questions. His name might be Dry but his class sure isn't.
This class was challenging, but the same weekly schedule was helpful, especially since it's online. There is a lot of weekly reading and discussion board conversation.
Cool guy, the class can be alot of fun. Very strict on grading but fair. good vibes in the class, but a little too SJWy
If you sign up for this class, you made a big mistake and will have a very long semester. One of the toughest graders for absolutely no reason. He has no understanding for students opinion and you MUST follow his guide lines. Save yourself the trouble and dont take his class. I think he forgets that he teaches at OCC, dude thinks its Harvard.
Ive never rated anyone on here before but I just have to after taking his online class. This class was harder than my other three 4 credit classes combined. There is WAY too much work he makes you do in such a little amount of time, and you have full on essay tests every week. Do yourself a favor & dont NOT TAKE ONE OF HIS CLASSES!!!
He is the worst professor I ever took , what ever I did in his class he never give me good grade do not take him . DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS HE IS THE WORST. HE does not know how to teach or grade.
Worst teacher I have ever had! Sets ALL students up for failure from day one. Does not respect that students are also working and have personal lives. Does not respect that students take more than his class. Do not take any classes with this professor.
This class was definitely challenging, and obviously that's what college is about. As long as you do the work you should be fine, and yes, that means you need to read the material. You will not pass if you don't read and take notes during lecture. It's annoying but necessary. Don't take him if you procrastinate.
I took his online class and every time I turned something in to him, he gave feedback. That was fine, then when I would correct something BASED on his feedback, hed take my score down about something that he didnt mention. I honestly have never had this happen before with any teacher and I wish that I can drop this class so badly.
He is ver y unclear and expects you alread know history as you had him. His tests are ridiculous.
You'll certainly learn a lot. This class was very difficult and incredibly time consuming and stressful for me. Each week, there is a LOT of reading you have to do, 5 discussion posts you have to make, and a five question long answer quiz that often took me the entire 3 hours. He is a very picky grader. You can pass, but it's a lot of work.
If you want to work hard cut back on fun and suffer a lot stress for nothing and not even pass then Dry is you guy. You want reasonable class that might not be an easy A but passable take someone else.
the best history teacher I have ever had and I have had many good history teacher. he makes history very fun, looked forward to coming to class. enjoyed the class a lot .
do not take this class
Nobody should have to take this guy ever. If you get suckered in or didn't look at his reviews like me, just drop. Hopefully this idiot gets fired soon so people don't end up with him. This class will eat up more hours than all your other classes combined. Tests take at least 1-2hrs minimum every Saturday. Inconsistent grading tons of unneeded work
His class isn't hard, just time consuming. Everyone that's giving him a bad rating is just lazy.
His class really isnt that hard. It is just somewhat time consuming. You have to be ready to do a lot of reading. If youre not willing to put time into your education then this class isnt for you
I was in this class for 3 days and had a mental breakdown. (AFTER GRADUATING NURSING SCHOOL ALL A'S btw)-Definitely not lazy like like people below say. The amount of busy work and stress this class brings is absolutely insane. No lectures, you have to learn everything yourself via the book and the 10min video he links. "Reversed teacher role" .
Not good professor. The worst history professor in the world. He makes his students work way too hard. He should be fired and never teach at another college.
Professor Dry is really good but there is a lot of work that is associated with the class.
Weekly quizzes are graded harshly at times but you are given an entire week to answer like 4 questions which wasn't that bad. The exam and final were very easy. Best history teacher I've had. very nice and gives you tons of room to improve.
Prof. Dry is absolutely stellar! He lays out the expectations, they aren't crazy, very clearly in the beginning and follows through the whole semester. Instead of lecturing at you, it is more discussion-based so you can come to your own conclusions so you learn way more. There is so much more to say about Professor Dry, just give his course a try!
Lazy inconsistent and wants make his class in passable to look like he is a university professor.
He expects you to know everything about history and he himself doesn't know much. What kind of online lecture is he teaching?
Shawn is awesome. I've taken 3 different classes with him and would take every class he teaches. Do you want a good grade? Read a little. Maybe 30 pages per week, if that. Participate in class. Do the discussion posts on D2L. Extra credit is always available. I got A's in all 3 of the classes I took with him. He's fun and funny.
Shawn's class is a breeze if you keep up with the readings and participate. The workload is manageable, and Unstuck ai was a lifesaver for my study prep.
Mr. Dry is a great Professor, he really cares for the students and makes it clear in the first week of class what to expect. Also how to become successful in his class by following his rubric. Mr. Dr has great lectures and Ive learned alot throughout his class.
He does not answer emails. Puts stuff on the test not even
Here is a history lesson for you. He has graded very poorly all his years. Been rude to people. Loved to sit on the clock and never a wader any questions. Lies what the test will be like. Boring lectures.
So much to answer grade biased what you post. His tests are tricky. You have to a wiki project. Don't take him.
Study all you want you will not pass.
Professor Dry is awesome and I hope anyone who reads this decides to take his class. I've taken two classes with him so far. Both have been pretty cool. He truly shows a love for his job and is passionate about teaching history. Professor Dry also genuinely cares for all of his students, which is really meaningful. I would 100% recommend his class
The guy teaches the class great and makes you interested. He is very nice and doesn't try make the class harder just because he can.
Never time to do anything else when you have his class.
Genuinely the best class i've ever taken in my entire life.. BEST professor EVER!!! I wish I could take more of Mr. Dry's classes!
Too much reading and cannot tell you how you're doing he just loves to fail students.
He is rude. Ask a question he does not know he will ramble on off topic. What little he really knows about history.
Does this guy who what he is teaching? No. He wants you to read his mind. Things we don't even read in the book are on his tough tests.
He blabs too much in class. Goes over nothing. Just read it all to pass. But even there it does not suffice for a good grade barely able to pass.
If you miss a single day of class it badly affects your grade. No matter how well you do on the test.
He is on his phone a lot. Runs late and can't go over a majority of his lectures. Study is all you have to do.
He acts friendly in class but overtime you will discover he likes to goof off and make the class difficult.
In his online class you have to write long comments be very accurate. It is very time consuming. His tests are unreasonably timed too short and forced to have long proof read answers. Worst online class I have ever taken.
Talks about off subject materials. Gives us little time to work in class while he golfs off. Lots of reading and homework. But the tests are biggest part of the grades.
Inconsitisnt with his rules. Docs your points for the least of mistakes. Hypocritical. Have to work with people you don't know from online.
This guy is a slacker. Does not want to teach just makes you read and have to guess what will be on the test.
You have to make so many comments online know how to work with Wiki for a project and tests are timed too short and hard.
Loves to make his class so challenging it is a like a game to him.
