The best Bio teacher in Miramar now. This class is not easy but he makes it simply. Test and lab report are hard but follow the review and guider sheet you will be fine. Take his class and do all the test you will see that it easy to get a B. More effort, you will get A. Love this class.
If this professor's the best that Miramar has 2 offer, then the Biology department needs to take another look @ their staff quality.Dr.H reads word 4 word power point presentations in lecture.Study guides don't prep students adequately 4 tests.Dont be mislead by easy 1st exam. Labs repetitive and filled w/ busy work.Class ave test scores were in 60s
Took Brahmbhatt last semester and I had to dropp her class because was impossible. This semester I am taking Dr. Hurley and he is much better. Good teacher and he makes easy to us.The best Bio 210B in the SDDCC.
Hurley is great, very accommodating, his class can get a little dry but he throws in jokes here and there and if you're paying attention you'll catch them. Great guy, I really appreciated his class and am glad i took 210A with him. He does every other week quizzes instead of exams, and one final. Perfect set up to keep you on your toes
The best Professor ever. He does the best he can to help all the students pass this class with a good grade. He is very helpfull and strongly recommend him. THE BEST BIO 210A Professor.
He is the best Bio 210A professor. Strongly recommend him because he knows what he is doing and cares about each and every student. It is a hard class but the way he presents the material anyone could easily follow it and pass it with an A. I really enjoyed his class.
When I took his class there was a total of 8 quizzes(50 pts each), drop the lowest. 2 lab tests (30&40 pts) and a final(150) and journal.. grades are based on pts. Use his pwrpts to study for quizzes! labs are super easy. good teacher, quizzes are multi choice, short essay q's sometimes matching. study and you'll be fine, don't and ure screwed.
He REALLY CARES about his students and it REALLY shows. He will take time out of class to help you if needed. He wants you to learn the material and to try your best. Do the BEST you can and STUDY! You will definitely pass! If you don't try your best and don't study then your own! Professor Hurley is AWESOME!
Amazing professor! The final was a challenge but represents what I learned during the semester. I wish he taught 210B. The quizzes are fair, just remember to take notes during class.
Dr. Hurley is fantastic! He presents the material very clearly and often restates content in different ways so everyone can understand. Take him!
Ok professor. You won't learn a lot. Hard tests but overall hes average. I get the feeling Hurley doctored his ratings here. His voice is irritating. I don't recommend taking his class.
Hes a OK person but hes a terrible teacher. When you ask him a question he answers in riddles. His practice review sheets didn't help at all. Very hard tests!! Reads off of pearsons prepared lectures... Basically its a regurgitation of what you can see online. Teaches the basics but tests are more indepth. Take him as a last resort!!
Professor Hurley was a decent professor who would answer your questions with questions. He has ridiculous quizzes. He gives you no heads up on what will be on them so prepare to study like there's no tomorrow. Test questions were very book oriented and he reads off slides. Very monotone. Lab is a bit relaxed though. Hard Grader!!!
Just took his summer class for Bio 210A at miramar. His class is very HARD and abstract. His quizzes are very detailed... but he only covers the basics. He reads straight from the powerpoints. VERY BORING. I'll be lucky with a C =(. Take a different teacher. Hurley changed up all the quizzes so previous semester quizzes are useless.
He makes this class super HARD!Covers the basic concepts in class but expects you to know very in-depth details on quizzes! He explains questions in riddles and reads off from powerpoint.I regret taking him,he doesnt give out extra credit or even curves any test.If you could memorize the book lines by lines, then take him.OTHERWISE DONT take him!
I took the lecture online (different instructor) and the lab in person with Hurley. The two instructors did not collaborate with each. Due to this, Hurley would cover labs that we had not completed the lecture for, making a difficult course almost impossible. He definitely knows biology but does not know how to teach it.
Tough class, but he is a good professor. His quizzes are VERY difficult because they go so far into detail, and his lectures cover more of the overall concepts. He is great at answering questions. You MUST read the book. If he lets you record his lectures-RECORD THEM!! However, the labs are VERY easy. Overall he's reasonable and knowledgeable.
Out of ~30 classes, the best professor I?ve had. Extremely knowledgeable and an EXTREMELY good lecturer. Clear about expectations and cares about students. Unexpectedly demanding for a biology class. If you pay attention and study from notes, PowerPoints, and the book, you will REALLY learn biology. I appreciate his class and highly recommend it.
This class was pretty easy once you get the hang of it. If you want an A in this class, the key is to read the book AT LEAST two times and maybe more, study the powerpoint and take notes in class. Although the professor reads off of the powerpoint, it's not word for word. He explains well. He is a pretty good teacher. And don't slack off, or your g
His class was super hard. He expect you to memorize everything. You need to read the book at least three times. His quizzes are so hard;90% of questions are multiple choices and it is hard to determine the right choice since all the choices are close from each other. You need ti study a lot, It was my fault too since I did not study hard too.
I love Dr. Hurley! The material was difficult (as Bio always seems to be) but he was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. He expects a lot from his students (journals, quizzes, lab exams, and a presentation). His lectures were enjoyable and not dry at all. Labs were not difficult, although a lot of writing was required. I learned so much from him!
Professor Hurley really cares about your success. He will do whatever it takes for you to understand. Unfortunately it requires 15-20 hours a week of studying. Hard quizzes but offers a lot of resources to help you understand. Altogether I learned a lot but had to drop because it took all my time.
Let me summarize this horrible professor: condescending, never responds to emails, extremely difficult test questions that are impossible to prepare for no matter how much you read , doesnt even post answers to his study guide (not that it would even prepare you anyway),extremely boring, and unapproachable. avoid this prof at all cost!
It's a really hard course with this professor. You literally need to know everything in the book by heart to do well in the class. I personally think it's a lot of work for a 3 unit lecture.
Huge stickler for points. His grading system is so obscure, i didn't know anyone in the class who did well on the exams. Ended up earning an A after reading the book at least 3 times and memorizing every detail. He is a really good lecturer and you will learn a lot. Ive took many science classes and they are not nearly as hard as this one.
Yes he is hard, but if you are taking the "science road" he will prepare you for it. Most students will have entrance exams for future degrees and he will well prepare you for these. Its hard material regardless who is teaching it.
I was nervous, at first, taking Dr. Hurley because I was taking a lot units and his is rumored to be a very hard class. However, I soon became comfortable when I realized that he is an excellent teacher. He is absolutely crystal clear in his lectures and you are given everything you need to know to be prepared for exams.
Fantastic professor! He's extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the subject and it shows through his clear and detailed lectures. Plus he says everything so eloquently. He could describe parafilm and it would sound articulate. Read the book thoroughly and listen attentively and you'll do fine.
Hurley is a great prof. He provides plenty of resources and he presents the material in different ways so each individual can understand. He is clear and concise when it comes to what he expects. Very approachable. He is tough when it comes to disrespectful students. This is a hard class. It's your fault if you do not do well. Welcome to college.
Dr. Hurley is a wonderful professor. The key to doing well in his class is doing the assigned reading at least twice but probably more. The tests ask very specific questions that you would only know from paying careful attention to the reading. Expect 10-15 hours a week to do well for lecture. Lab was really easy and he guides you through it.
Okay so if you are looking for an easy biology class, this is not it. The purpose of these "bio majors" classes are to prepare you well for the up coming storm of learning ie 400+ level. He will prepare you well for this. If you are here to learn then take his class. If you like spending money for a lesser education than take someone else.
Dr. Hurley knows his stuffs, so ask him as many questions as you can. He gives extra credits, and sometimes test corrections, which is great to relearn the materials. Take him if you are a science major. He'll prepare you for higher biology classes.
The level of detail & understanding required to do well in this class is good preparation for upper division biology courses, however, I would not take this professor again. Lectures run 10 mins longer than the class end time, he is confrontational & yells at students in class, & he is generally not very helpful or responsive to emails.
Dr. Hurley is a good professor and he teaches well. You really have to put in time and effort for the class to do well. For lab always read the introduction to the next lab sessions to do well on the weekly quizzes. For the lectures exams he has given redos on some sections and that definitely boosts your grade up but redos are never a guarantee.
I would not take this professor again. He is inconsiderate and lectures 10 minutes past the class end time almost every single class. He should understand that his class is not the only one people are taking and our next class might start 10 minutes after the end of his class time. He is also quite awkward and not very upbeat or friendly.
He is a great professor however his exams are the most ridiculously hard thing EVER. He is always available for help, but it does not help. In addition, he provides a lot of study material to help, but it is a far cry from his exams. It's the way he chooses to word things that messes you up and everything is entirely too specific. Be careful.
Nice guy one on one, smart, tests are psychological battery on paper, difficult to take notes from lectures, labs were interesting, does not communicate well with average student. He's like Sheldon from 'Big Bang Theory'. Does try to lefture in every possible format, but comes off as PhD or preschool, no middle ground.
First, subject is not easy, so you won't get by without studying the material. As far as Dr. Hurley, he is tough and very intelligent. He is also fair and offers a variety of opportunities to make up test points, as his tests are difficult. Read the book and highlight, study 4 hours a week for the class and you'll get an A.
Dr. Hurley is very intelligent and knows his stuff but the way he speaks is not of a professor that should be teaching the first part of a biology class. The speaks in a very dictionary-type manner and gets frustrated when people don't understand. Tests are tricky. Pick another professor if you can, especially if you have other classes.
I learned more in his class than all of my time spent in high school science classes. The lectures are clear and the labs insightful. I would suggest taking Dr. Hurley if you want to know biology and retain the information. His tests are challenging.
Dr. Hurley was awesome. I hadn't taken an A&P class since 2007. I was nervous and it became clear I didn't need to be. His syllabus is straight forward. He gives you help if you ask. Theres extra credit on quizzes and test. Not a strict grader. Good study guides. read and put in the effort you'll pass. Grades received quick.
Really intelligent and eloquent professor who makes the course content and grading criteria very clear. The material is hard, no matter the teacher, but Hurley allows opportunity for test corrections to help with this. Course grade, both lecture and lab, is almost solely dependent on quizzes and tests which can be difficult. Book is a must have.
Detailed lectures that cover everything on exams. Fair grader. His lectures help you understand the material more in addition to the reading. WARNING FOR PEOPLE WITH ENGLISH AS THEIR SECOND LANGUAGE: his speech includes tons of advanced vocab and he's an expert at making simple sentences complicated so watch out.
Makes the class way more difficult than it needs to be. Tests are extremely unpredictable and you need to set aside a lot more than 6 hours a week to even pass this class. Very smart guy but gets frustrated if you don't understand everything he says. Book is very necessary but even that won't prepare you for some things on the test.
Very picky grader, test material can be unpredictable, a bit temperamental in class. Exams will have material out of left field. Provides tons of resources on course website but the exam study guides can leave out large portions. I really enjoy biology, I'm happy to invest the time to understand it, but his tests are deceptive.
He has great lesson plans which in lab is essential. He knows what he is doing and is prepared for the class. Room for break! He is also patient in answering students questions.
Tests are hard and unpredictable. Really difficult to do well if you're taking other classes.
Dr. Hurley is an extremely knowledgeable professor! His lectures are incredibly informative but extremely dry. If you don't pay attention in class or find the subject material interesting, you will fail. He provides you everything you need to be successful, but don't slack! You won't need the book to get an A, but you'll definitely need to study!
Dr Hurley is a very smart guy but not very patient with students. Lab is pretty easy and there are quizzes every week. Most of the grade relies on exams, which are ridiculously hard
The tests are the worst. Theres some good resources he give but it often doesn't help you much. Lab quizzes every week and one project, mostly test and quizzes.
Dr Hurley is incredibly knowledgeable and actually prepared me for state (I am writing this after the transfer). The class was challenging (I had to actually study) but it paid off.
Definitely recommend Dr. Hurley. Tests are very wordy, high vocabulary, should read the book ahead/as review. Provides worksheets to help further understand topics as well as study guides for the lecture quizzes coming up. Also posts exam study guides early so can work on it before the test, bc doing it later will be hard & frustrating. No hw too.
In general I would say he's a good teacher, but was teaching an intro to Bio class as if it was a way higher level. His labs are very long and he tends to explain one thing too many ways and times. His tests are hard and are very specific.
I'm not a science major so I expected a challenge. Dr. Hurley made this class do-able. He was very clear, tried to be funny (didn't always succeed), and was always available in office hours for further help. He cared and respected everyone, and knew he wanted me to do well. This made up for the (sometimes) boring lecture.
Excellent professor! Very professional, keeps it on subject matter, no political rants. Wants you to learn the material. Encourages questions and office hours. Labs start off boring, but get more interesting as the semester progresses. Exams every 2-3 weeks. Very interesting class, you will learn a lot! Tough but fair.
he is very prepared and knowledgable. he offers so many different resources and is very open to individual help. every time he goes overtime in class. personally, hearing him talk was like blades to my ears and i dreaded seeing him everytime. if you can get past that, go for it! try enough and get an A. slack off, like me, get a B. good luck!
It was a great class despite being online for half of the term. Professor Hurley knows how to convey topics and keep it interesting. I did have to study but it paid off.
I had Dr Hurley during spring semester 2020. He was absolutely phenomenal about the transition to online school and is overall a very understanding instructor. Offered retakes and dropped your lowest test score. No homework, had study good resources on his site. Tests difficulty was alright. Only downside is he tends to drone on and on sometimes
Dr. Hurley is a very kind and nice professor. He is always willing to help and even encourages you to go to his office hour from that you can get free 10 points. He replied my emails within 5 minutes. However, be prepared to study since his exams are far more difficult than just homework or in textbook. He drop the lowest test scores and also curve
BIOL210A is quite a difficult class, especially online, but Prof Hurley does everything he can to help you succeed. He does pre-exam study sessions, which are very helpful. There are 10 short chapter quizzes with the lowest dropped, 15 lab quizzes with the lowest dropped, 6 exams, and a final exam. Homework is optional but helpful.
You can tell that Dr. Hurley is passionate and engaging about what he teaches. He is very clear and he is constantly checking for understanding and the lectures seem more like a class discussions. He is also understanding and offers retake opportunities when exam averages are low. For sure one of the best Bio professors out there.
Professor Hurley is knowledgeable and really cares about making sure his students succeed. Lots of practice activities and homework, and provides lots of good study materials. Gives some extra credit. Encourages class participation. Not a tough grader. Beware: There is a presentation to give at the end of the semester.
Dr. Hurley is one of the best instructors at this college, super kind & caring! Tips: DON'T MISS LECTURES, you can miss out on points. Weekly homework assignments - easy-peasy. Do the review sheets, helps a ton on tests! SOMETIMES he let us use a "cheat sheet", BEWARE when he does, the exam WILL be harder than a reg. exam!
Thoroughly enjoyed this class. It can feel fast-paced because there is a lot of material but Dr. Hurley makes it very digestible. Graded on lab practicals/written exams, class project, quizzes, and a couple online assignments. Go in prepared (reading lab prior), you're given every opportunity to succeed in his class!
Professor does well with including visuals during their lecture. Does use time wisely in class to dive into deeper concepts but requires preview of material. They also used online textbooks
His teaching style made me feel like I was in high school again. It's a flipped classroom so he expects you to come to class knowing the material already. He rarely lectures and instead does kahoots & puts on youtube videos or makes us do group activities. The tests are detailed & fairly difficult yet the textbook & his lectures are surface-level.
The worst professor I've ever had. He lectures like you're in elementary school but grades you on a much higher level. The material given is not helpful for any of the assignments or tests/quizzes. I often had to google the answers. EXTREMELY rude when I had questions and gave me attitude when I didn't understand the material. Avoid taking him.
This was the worst professor I've ever had. As a bio major he genuinely made me want to change my major to chemistry. Never had so much difficulty in a bio class, unnecessarily difficult to get an A. Lab quizzes were one of the hardest things I've ever seen, and no reports so the grade was entirely dependent on the quiz and exams, HW was hard too.
Professor Hurley really wants you to do well in the class. He explains the material in depth during lecture and being in class for his explanations helped me a lot. He provides lots of good study materials and his practice assignments are helpful. Not a tough grader. Great Professor!
The worst biology professor I've ever had. He actually made me hate bio. I was a biology major before taking this class. Now I'm a chem major. He explained things in a way that is almost impossible to understand. He used so many unnecessary words, he should be an English teacher, not a bio teacher. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. You will hate biology.
Professor Hurley allows you to do test corrections which help because there is a lot of material. His lectures are amazing and helped me understand the material more in addition to the reading. He has an advanced vocabulary so ask him questions or to repeat things if you feel lost. Very knowledgable professor.
This class has a lot of material but Dr. Hurley provides a lot of good study tools to help. He really wants you to do well in this class. Easy grader. I really enjoyed this class!
Class covers a lot of material but he makes it interesting, lots of reading, exams are hard but he gives a lot of tools for practice and extra credit opportunities. Very accesible outside of class, answers questions clearly and grades quickly.
Overall the lectures were average. The material was interesting enough and somewhat matched the exams. Lab quizzes were pretty difficult and unpredictable. Dr. Hurley was helpful in office hours but if you asked a question in class he would tell you to read the online textbook.
Professor Hurley will talk forever; don't take him if you have trouble focusing. Dozing off during his labs is common among students. He assigns lots of reading & exam questions will be extremely intricate. If you prefer visual & physical learning like me, you will struggle. He cares a lot about student success, but his teaching style is ridiculous
I really enjoyed this class. There is a lot of material but Dr. Hurley makes it easy because he breaks everything down for you. His expectations are very clear from the beginning. If you can put in consistent effort in this class then you will do well. Take him!
Dr. Hurley is the best professor at Miramar. He really cares about students and wants you to do well. Make sure you do the assignments so you don't miss any of the easy points in the class. He provides a lot of great study materials, grades quickly and is available outside of class. Awesome professor!
Hurley is very passionate about Biology, maybe a little too passionate. Obviously, that is a good thing but he rambles in class until the very last millisecond of class and also treats his students like we are middle schoolers. Most of the material in his lectures aren't really on his exams either. Not your typical laid back college professor.
Spends over half the class going over every single detail of directions, but explains them in a very confusing way. When you ask him ANY questions, he gets annoyed and makes you feel dumb with everything you ask. Tests are impossible and he is an extremely harsh grader (no one gets an A). DON'T take his class if you care for your sanity.
Professor Hurley is so knowledgable and kind. I learned so much in his class. He explains concepts so well that it really makes it easy to learn the material. He grades really quickly compared to other professors I have had at Miramar.
Professor Hurley is very passionate about Biology. Which makes his teaching much more detailed and easier to understand since he has different ways to teach a concept. He is always available outside of class and tries really hard to help you on concepts you have difficulties with. You dont have to buy a textbook since he provides the reading online
"Kind" to the class as a whole while rude and condescending to every individual person. Tests and practicals are graded like he wants you to lose points. Legitimately terrible teacher that made me lose passion for science and I'm pretty sure half of the reviews here are written by him. Please only take this course if Snipas is teaching.
He's one of the BEST professors I've ever had. He's so passionate about what he teaches and encourages students to do their best. If you take his class seriously and don't disrespect his time, he will gladly help you out on labs or homework questions. He is very lecture heavy so avoid skipping, as some examples he uses in lecture show up on exams!
The worst professor at Miramar. Not engaging at all in lecture, assigns insane readings, exams never match lecture, goes over time every class, RUDE TO PPL WHO ASK QUESTIONS. His labs would take the full 3 hours because he talks for 2 and a 1/2 of them. No lab reports, just lab quizzes that are never about the actual lab. 100% do not recommend.
Honestly, despite teaching at a CC, he is a PhD and he definitely holds you to a university standard. For this reason, I really appreciate him. He's very good natured, understanding, and very gracious. But on that note, he also holds us accountable for truly knowing the content (not just memorizing.) If I could have him for BIO210B I would!
