Lectures are ok, but not really my style and is a fair teacher, but again, not my style
I could rarely stay awake in this class. All lecture, no homework except journals. I love history but hated this class. He never closes his mouth when he talks and it bugged me. Nice man, bad teacher. Not recommended.
Great great critiques of my work. Knowledgeable, and sets up class to promote discussion. Helped me learn to effectively use primary sources. Freat help for grad school.
Overall a good class. A little boring at times, but I think that's just because of the subject. His tests were pretty hard and so long. But other than that, nice guy.
This is the easiest class I have ever taken. You do have to pay attention in class. He's a funny guy. It's nice that you don't have to buy a book for his class, instead he emails you little exerpts that are very specific to the topic. Take him for American Heritage, but watch out with his upper level history classes. I hear they're hard.
A lot of reading is required for the class, but the homework load is not that bad. Jahansen is very helpful and explains concepts in greater detail if someone doesn't understand
He is boring I have to be blunt... yeah at times he can be funny but he is usually boreing. He teaches soley from his powerpoint presentations and you need to take notes from it. The tests are all from the notes. He is a very nice guy and can be helpful and is always willing to answer questions.
funny, very interested in his subject
I hated history before this class. His lectures were all you had to remember. There was no textbook which was nice. His tests were all based on concepts and not on names and dates. He allways had a study session where he basically tells you the test. You don't accually have to do the readings to pass the class with an A.
Considering the fact that this class is in a lecture hall with 200 students, it's actually really fun! Bro. Johansen has a dry wit that could make anyone smile...even the Canadians in the class :). The fact that there is no textbook is nice, but the readings are all very interesting and worth reading actually.
Good teacher. Take lots of notes and there is alot of reading. Good teacher if you like a teacher that doesnt hound you with politics. Overall a good class and you learn alot even though it is in a lecture hall.
He is an excellent teacher if you are do well listening to lecture. He teaches the subject matter really well. I really appreciate the way he teaches.
Not my favorite history teacher. I feel like he just covers the basics that I learned in high school. However, he does a great job at making things clear and straitforward. I still enjoyed his class, just because US History is one of my favorite subjects. Yet at 9 in the morning, I occasionally fell asleep.
He's a good teacher and explains everything that is going to be on the test. I would recommend taking him.
He teaches by his opinion only and when you try to voice your opinion or even have questions he shoots them down. His tests aren't so bad but if you ever want to give insight in the class forget about it..he is one of those people who are always right, and you will never be right
He doesn't make you memorize dates unless they're really important, you can come to class review sessions before every test, and he has a "repentance" test at the end of the semester. He is entertaining and class flies by pretty fast. He knows how to make things apply to a regular student's life.
I love brother Johansen. I don't think he teaches by opinion at all. I think he's super unbiased and really tolerant of other people's opinions. He tells both sides of the story. You can never figure out what his opinion really is on something.
I loved this class, I loved taking it from johanson, i plan on taking more classes from him. attendance isn't really necessary but I did see a difference in my test scores from days that I missed!!
Horrible teacher. never listens to students, always right
Looks confused all the time and always leaves his mouth open which is funny but annoying. Very narrow minded. Elitist who believes his views are the only correct ones. Holds a grudge that reflects on your grade if you challenge his ideas in class. Not a bad person, just a poor excuse for a teacher at a university.
Very picky. take 380 from the other teacher.
Learned alot- make sure to take good notes in lectures. Fair tests and grading policy. I enjoyed taking this class, esp. compared to other BYU amer. her. classes' difficulty level.
I really enjoyed his class. But I like History. I like how he taught and test. Just take notes (follow the slides) and study the study guides and your notes and you will be fine!
DEFINITELY the best prof for AMHER170. the class was quite easy, but at the same time, you're learning a lot of great info that will actually be useful in life. his tests aren't that bad and he is very accomodating to work with. I wouldn't recommend taking AMHER170 from anyone else
Nice guy, has you thinkin he loves America the whole class long then DUNDUNDUN... final come and so does the truth! To find out what the truth is please enrole in AmerHer 170 with Professor Shawn Johansen.
Interesting and he gives you a study guide so just take good notes and study and its a breeze! even thought attendence is not taken it would be in your best interest to attend class!!!
I really enjoyed his class. There is no homework except a news journal. Super easy, but I learned and retained a lot. He gives you readings to do, and there are some questions about them on the tests, but I didn't read a single one, and I never got below an A on any test. Easy, but you learn. VERY willing to work with you if you have any problems.
He is obsessed with concepts and rather vague in his explanations. His tests are hard and are always long essay questions dealing with concepts. He does do in class activities rather than all lecture like some professors though. I would not take his class again.
If you attend class and pay attention, the tests should be a breeze. Doesn't require a textbook, but posts readings on Blackboard. I think his opinions run slightly contradictory to his teachings at times, which kind of bothers me a bit. Super nice guy!
This class is all lecture, but Bro. Johanson did a great job. As long as you attend the class, take good notes, and do the reading assignments, you'll do great.
very easy nice class as long as you show up and take notes from his powerpoints.
I loved this class and the teacher. Attendance is mandatory! The tests are easy and fair. He only tests from his lectures. Canadians may have a harder time, but some studying will take care of that. I studied about an hour or two before each test (5 or 6 tests total) and I got an easy A. He also assigns Current Events which only help your grade.
Kinda a wierdie with Liberal views and "I'm not your typical mormon." err about him but easy, entertaining, and nice.
Very dry sense of humor. Class is super boring and tests are based on concepts, not facts like dates.
You have to remember the conclusions he draws in class from the material -- his tests are based on concepts. He's not ultra-conservative like some Mormons, which I actually find refreshing. I found him very respectful of others, and I think he thinks a lot about how best to teach the class. It's a very easy class if you do well on multiple choice
Good teacher. SO BORING THOUGH! Almost everyday, I fell asleep in class. His tests are easy. Just do the study guide and you'll be fine. This was easy because I took a couple American History classes in High school so it wasn't too hard. This girl never went to class and ended up getting a C. Take for an easy A.
His class was really easy!!!!! all you have to do is go to class and understand the concepts and take notes. the tests are easy too, just do the study guides. but, he is REALLLY boring! I fell asleep every day in his class! and his voice is super momotone. but its an easy A.
Brother Johansen is a great teacher, he has a good sense of humor. Very easy class, If you come to class and listen that is enough to get your through it. Test are easy as long as you listen in class.
If you are willing to conform to what he thinks you will do well. However, if you try to express you thoughts or come up with novel ideas this class is going to be painful. However, the reading for the class is very interesting. I really liked reading about Ben Franklin out of all the stuff we did in the class.
Bro. Johansen was good. His lectures sometimes got boring but he was a good teacher. I knew what was going to be on the test, I had to study a lot but it was worth it. I would reccomend him to a friend:)
He is a very good teacher. American Heritage is a difficult subject but he makes it easy to understand. He is also funny.
I really liked this class! No textbooks! You just have to copy down what he has on his power point and listen to what he has to say. He even gives you a chance to take a "repentance" exam to make up for your lowest test score! He is very accomadating and understanding!
This was a good class. It is easy enough if you show up and take good notes. All the reading is online. He has a dry wit and is pretty funny.
no textbooks which was nice. grade is based all on four tests and one assignment. easy to pass, most ppl slept through it around me. i wouldnt retake it from him if i had to do it over...
Very, very, very helpful! He lets you turn work in late, but with a deduction of points. The researching is very hard but he is always willing to help!
He's a good teacher. It was nice not having to buy a textbook. Most all of your grade is based on tests though. He understands how college students are, it's kind of funny, so he's pretty accommodating. Learned a lot, and he only focuses on the big picture, no memorization of dates and names.
Easy A - as long as you go to class and only sleep through it occasionally, you'll be fine. I found his discussions really boring and uninformative - I learned more in my HS gov/hist classes. He claims to focus on the "big picture" instead of facts, but the way I see it he was just making an excuse for not teaching any solid information.
I absoutly LOVE history, it is my major and I HATED this class. I did learn alot but It is just insane. I went to class and took notes on everything he said and I still could not pass his tests even with my notes and studying for hours for his tests. It was rediculous.
I did not get along with this professor at all. Every time I would comment in his class (an appropriate and thought out comment) it felt like he was talking down to me. He never answered my emails, and he reads compeletly from the powerpoints which really annoyed me- all prosaic material! I would never take a class from this man again. EVER.
Great teacher! He has very dry humor but I enjoyed it. He explains things very well and there are no surprises in his class. The class requires effort but as long as you keep up with the work you'll do great. Good class, I recommend him.
I loved this class! He's hilarious and makes it fun. We were always laughing about something in his class. It's a good idea to attend constantly, or get the notes from a good source, because there's no text to read.
good teacher. study lots for tests and you'll do fine
He is the worst professor I have ever had. I learned absolutely nothing new from this guy. He has a monotone voice and makes horrible jokes. I assume that my professors are going to be republican at this school but he teaches with a huge conservative sway which is annoying and slightly inappropriate for this school. Dont take any classes from him!!
The Senior Seminar Topic was race class and Gender. The workload was not bad if you like to read, be prepared to read A LOT, like 100's of pages between classes, but not all the time. The topic could be a thorny issue to navigate but I think he did it very well. He seemed to be quite liberal and thus a good fit for the issues.
I love Bro Johansen but the biggest problem I had was that he would assign huge (50+ page) readings and expect you to understand what it was about. For the harder to read assignments this was torture. He has specific things he wants for us to get from the reading assignments but doesn't help us find them until after we have to turn in assignments.
His way of teaching is not very helpful! I was able to find that his study guides weren't helpful and that his test seemed to always have more then one correct answer! I didn't know anybody that aced his test! Everything was way vague and no matter what you do seems to help! It seemed like the only way to do well is to be able to read his mind.
He was really nice at the beginning but with the paper watch out. He grades as if you are in graduate school applying for your PHD.
Bro Johansen is a good guy but he as a few problems. First he gives ridiculously long reading assignments and expects you to find what he wants you to find without telling you what to look for. This is the core of whats wrong with him. He expects you to understand and do what he wants you to understand and do without explaining what he wants.
I took this class from him in the Summer of 2007. I enjoyed the content of the classes, but it was hard to enjoy due to the fact that the professor seemed like he had an ax to grind against the American Revolution. Also, he never specified what he wanted you to obtain from your studies. Instead, it was more of a puzzle.
I really like Johansen. You absolutely have to read in his class or you will not pass. He was really great at leaving out all the "fluffy" stuff and its very easy to follow his teaching style. He is kind of unenthusiastic, which at times can make it hard to pay attention. He cares about his students and wants to help you succeed.
Regardless of getting an A, I did not enjoy going to his class most of the time. The class discussions were really him just forcing his views on us. If someone brought up a good point against his, he'd say "that's interesting" and that we'd get to it another day, which of course we never did.
Bro. Jo's class requires LOTS of reading, but it's for your own good. You learn so much from it, which makes his lectures just that much better! He really knows a lot and his main goal is to help his students see the world from a different perspective. He wants to see you grow and learn. This is my 3rd class I've taken from him.
I could only stand to go to 2 of his classes. He expects you to know what he wants out of an assignment without actually telling you. It's like some kind of guessing game. The main thing wrong with him is he bluntly said that he does not give out "A's" to people with great work. I immediately went home and dropped the class. He's not worth it.
I liked listening to Brother Johanesen. He really knows what he is talking about and makes the occasional funny joke. His tests aren't to bad, and the only other assignments he gives is quiz's and work journals. Overall I would recommend this class.
Relies on a heavily biased textbook, but unlike other history teachers is open with his biases and tries to point them out. sometimes treats opinions like facts, but that's normal. the work journals are just busy work, but its an easy A.
He is a great teacher I enjoyed taking his class. I felt like I really learned a lot after every discussion. You HAVE to take notes well (not just coping the ppts) to do well on the tests. The quizes are pretty hard you have to get the concepts to do well! There are journals every day and he randomly asks you to turn them in. But you learn a lot!
Bro Johansen is a nice guy, but his class is pretty hard. if you are good at remebering what you've read or you dislike history... don't take this class. His tests are also pretty hard.
He is a really good teacher and tries to incorporate how you will teach (since most who take this class will be teachers). If you read and use the study guides, the class will be a breeze. You have to be in class to take group quizzes almost every day. He talks slowly and methodically so it can get a little dull, but he really is a GREAT teacher.
This class is a challenge, but not impossible. He expects you to grasp challenging concepts and tries to show you both sides. He's a super nice guy so a couple of the polisci majors hi-jacked half the class and distracted from the main points which drove me crazy, but I loved the subject and the homework. It is a challenge, but he's there to help.
Not a bad professor but not a great one either. The class wasn't all that hard for me. Just stay up on the work journals and you will do fine.
Great teacher. Loves class discussion. Knows what he is talking about. Do the assignments and take notes and you will do well.
Pretty easy class, but Bro Johansen is a fun guy. It's all lecture based, but the discussions can get interesting, and the subject material can be boring, but you don't have to read out of a textbook; he just posts readings, and they're usually pretty interesting.
Great teacher Funny too. SUPER easy class. He attempts to teach things from a historical rather than political standpoint on most topics. GO TO CLASS AND TAKE NOTES! If you do that and the readings youll get an easy A. He grades on attendance and since there's no textbook his tests are completely lecture based. Dem/lib students no need to fear him.
Brother Johansen was always friendly and helpful. I was nervous on the first day because he basically told us we weren't going to get an A, but don't worry, it's not that hard, just do the daily journals and you'll pass. The tests are pretty simple, I just review my notes to study and always get an A.
He's a good teacher. There are times where one is trying everything to get an A in the class, but in the end your hard work turns out to a B to an -A. The work journals are not difficult, just need to keep up with them. Make sure to take notes of important things, even if they are not shown on the screen.
Very hard,not easy on Homeworks
He was a great teacher! Very helpful and will explain concepts if you don't understand. He is not crazy hard, he tries to make the class enjoyable. I would take him again. Recommended.
I was surprised that his rating wasn't higher! Bro. J was a great teacher because he allowed for a lot discussion and easy weekly quizzes that weren't made to trick you. He also likes doing simulations that help you remember what you are learning. His tests aren't hard, two essays, 50 MC questions, and like a short answer. Prepares u well for test.
Loved the class and the teacher. He lets the class choose the percentages used in grading for the semester. The final paper at the end isn't really that hard if you've been paying attention.
Brother Johansen, is a good teacher. However, he grades hard. The stuff you learn in his class are for the most part what you would learn in any class, but he try's to make it harder than it needs to be by how he tests.
Great professor. Very clear when lecturing and keeps things lively by engaging in discussion with the students. Very kind, helpful, and approachable. Keep up with work journal assignments and get a head start on reading for the final paper. Completely non-biased politically. Overall great class and a great instructor.
Brother Johansen was a pretty good professor though his lectures were often dull. Almost every class there was either reading or homework due, and often both. The Homework seemed pointless but was useful in the long run for the main essay. He focused a lot on correct citations and footnotes which were also a big part of the essay.
Brother Johansen--while boring at times--was a solid professor. I enjoyed the class and he is a solid guy. He is pretty understanding and will take late grades pretty much no matter what with only a 15 point deduction. He will work with students who need help and he helped me write my thesis for our research paper in his office because I was stuck.
A large majority of your grade is made up by quizzes and exams. For this semester you needed an 80% cumulative score on the quizzes to pass the course. I thought that was unreasonable considering some of his quiz questions are tricky or unclear. I've taken HIST 224, 264, 310, 340, 101, 220 and 300 and this is one of, if not my least favorite course
He requires you to get at least 80% cumulative on the personal quizzes otherwise you will fail the course. There's always in class group quizzes so if you aren't there you'll fail those and they cannot be made up. There's a lot of useless information in the lectures. It's also very hard to understand what he wants on the exam essays... good luck
Youll learn a ton about history, although you definitely have to put forth effort. He is a tough grader, but gives great feedback and is always willing to give good advice on improving your writing!
Lots of reading. His quizes are easy IF you read. Exams are half multiple choice & half essay. The multiple choice is generally easy but hes more tough & particular on the essay portion. His class will make the U.S look like an evil empire/the bad guys. Its 10% war & politics & 90% social injustices. If you are an SJW you will love this class!
Easy easy class but literally the most boring man in the whole world. Sorry Brother Johansen... but I dreaded going to class and almost fell asleep every. single. class. A kind guy, just boring. You should probably save yourself the pain and avoid his class at all costs.
No offense to Brother Johansen, he is a very nice person but is possibly the worst professor I have ever had. I dreaded going to class every day because of how boring his lectures were. His lectures rarely made sense, and I drifted off in class quite often.
Johansen was a alright teacher. He wasn't the best, but wasn't the worst. He is a historian not a teacher. He is really good at putting facts on powerPoints that you need for the test, but it is hard for him to teach the topic. If you go to class, do the homework, and put some effort, you will be fine. Be aware that exams are most of the grade.
I had him for his first time teaching HIST115. Because he was still new, things kept changing in the class. It was unclear when we had "portfolio checks" but if you do the homework and turn it in online, then you'll be fine. Lectures were kinda boring but it is required to come to class. He also doesn't put update grades right away online.
He is a nice man but not a very good teacher. It was his first time teaching this class and it was suppose to be History and Civics but it was a government class. He wouldn't put homework reminders or power points on I-Learn and his portfolio checks were random. He knew his stuff but very difficult to follow during class. Take good notes!
I had heard bad things about Brother Johansen and was nervous to take his class, but I am so happy I did! I think he explains history and government in an easy way to understand. The homework is in no way busy work, its very helpful! Do not be afraid to take his class, you will learn a ton with not very much work required!
Taken a few of his classes now, and I've gained so much respect for him! Admittedly not the most entertaining, but Bro. Johansen is a wonderful guy, understanding teacher, self-aware, and so caring. Always treats students with dignity and respect. Professional, prepared, orderly. Clear expectations Idk, I just really love him for some reason. :)
The lectures can be interesting if you pay attention. Asks for more than the bare minimum, which people seem to get worked up about. He has you turn in notes a few times in the semester to see that youre taking good enough ones. Multiple choice tests. Hes a really nice guy and will crack jokes.
There are a lot of reading along with the quizzes. So I am absolutely terrible at quiz/test taking, no matter how much I read or prepare. If you communicate to him and your needs, he WILL help you! He really does care for his students and wants us to pass. He gives excellent feedback. He's more tough & particular on the essay portion.
I've always struggles with history, and taking this class doesn't help. He tends to go on long lectures which are usually monotone, and doesn't have his study guides match up to the exams. If he didn't offer extra credit every week I definitely would have failed.
There is a ton of reading in this class. Every week you spend several hours reading (that is if you do it) the material. You need 2 text books for the class, but it is possible to slide by without them (do at your own risk). After the reading you'll usually write 400-700 words answering questions about the reading. I wasn't a fan, but i don't read.
Brother Johansen is one of the most caring professors. The course content is difficult but he makes it possible for anyone to pass. The homework is mostly just reading and questions and it's not every week. The tests are doable and he gives you chances to improve your score. I would definitely recommend taking this professor.
He's pretty bad. I'll be sure to avoid his classes from here on out as a history major myself
It was a reasonable amount of work, there are readings due each week but the questions go in chronological order and are stated clearly in the text- it's really easy to find. His exams are easy if you use the study guide, they are just written answers but if you take notes and study you will do fine.
Be ready for lots of homework, quizzes and exams in this class. And Brother Johansen is a super tough grader on the assignments. Also, he has a hard time addressing student concerns in person and over email. I also do not like how his assignments are due at weird/ inconvenient times
I took HIST120, but there was no option for 120 under his name. Just look at the tags. Expect to do a lot of reading and weekly reading questions. He is a pretty tame professor, but be aware of a decent size load of homework, and prepare to do some homework during the weekend.
Professor Johansen is a fantastic educator and very attentive to his student's needs. He is willing to meet with you one on one anytime he is available and provides accurate and specific feedback to make you a better historian and writer. There is a lot of reading and writing but he is clearly passionate about history and wants the best for you.
He's fine. Uses slides and you take notes in class(no electronics btw). Not everything important is on the slide, so you do have to listen and take notes on what is said as well. Can be boring/slow, some tangents. Your test essay/paragraph isn't quite good enough for full score, but the schedule is clear. ~2hrs hw a week, sometimes a documentary.
Although it is a very lecture heavy class, they were pretty insightful and interesting. If you stay in top of the homework and notes, you'll be fine. He is also very understanding and will make accommodations within reason.
I liked this class. It is very lecture heavy, but they can be interesting. Definitely take notes on everything because it will most likely be on the test. Tests were in class, but never too hard. The study guides are very helpful. Overall, a good professor and not too hard of a class.
Lectures veer towards the political with an anti-Trump and pro-illegal agenda in what should be an apolitical class. It's tiresime and frustrating--especially since some of the writing assignments are also political in nature. I wouldn't take from him again.
For HIST 372 or Civil War. There is a good portion of reading with questions but all the answers were in the textbook. His lectures were engaging and I really enjoyed his lectures. He is really nice and wants to work with you. Attend the class and take the notes on the slides and what he says. You will do just fine!
