He is a great and funny guy but he is a horrible math teacher. He is bad at explaining things and I never understand any of his lectures. He spends half of the class teaching and the other half talking about his personal life. Do not recommend him unless you are really good at math.
He was a fantastic teacher! Even if the class was hard or confusing to understand he would make a point of giving lots of office hours or tutoring time. He was also very open and easy going so a student could stop the class and ask him to re-explain something and he would. 10/10 would recommend.
He is very funny and likes to relate to students. but gives a lot of homework.
I'm NOT a math person-- I've struggled with easier classes than his. He is a wonderfully kind, helpful professor who makes a dry topic engaging and straightforward. I'd highly recommend his class.
Mr. Lanier really brings life to math. Many students have trouble following math, as I did myself throughout highschool, but Lanier takes the time with each student, and exlains math in a way that it easy to understand. Lanier always makes himself available for tutoring outside of class hours. He truly wants to see every student succeed.
I'm so mad because Lanier helped me through 110 and now he isn't teaching the classes that I am moving onto. I had another math teacher this semester and although I succeeded, I miss having Lanier to really help you through to truly understand what you are learning. If math doesn't come to you easily, Lanier will find a way for you to grasp it.
Best math teacher I have ever had! He makes you enjoy math and makes his lectures fun! He is very clear in his lectures, if you dont understand, he will find a way to explain it some other way.I really recommend him!!
Lanier is a super cool guy, laid back, always gives you as many points he possibly can on tests but they are HARD He doesn't give a lot of examples on how to do specific homework, if you need help or better explanations get ready to be very vocal in class and visit his office hours. Lots of homework, but he keeps class entertaining.
Very inspirational. He explains math in a way i can understand.
Brilliant mathematician and makes class fun with references of Missy Elliot for finding an inverse function, or Black Eyed Peas for FOILing a Cubic polynomial. Answers questions thoroughly in class but can be a little difficult getting help outside of class. Tests are ROUGH if you're not EXTREMELY comfortable with the material and no study guides.
I took MATH 1A and 1B with Lanier back in 2013 and he was amazing! Math is definitely not an easy subject for me but with the help of Lanier it became a subject that I could at least appreciate. He is a super hilarious and easy going guy. He made lecture fun and interesting. Now that I transferred to UCD I wish he would still be my math professor!
Mr. Lanier is the best teacher on campus. He is very helpful, genuinely wants you to succeed and explains the work clearly. I've had the pleasure of taking him for Math 20, and Math 1A and look forward to taking more Mathematics courses from him. Highly recommended.
Lanier is a fantastic professor. If I could take every class with him I would. He always always available to help you, I still go back to him for help in classes with other professors.
Hilarious dude, knows his stuff. It really isnt his fault that math lectures can get boring but he does make it entertaining, Calc is really easy with him, its hard to not get an A. Show up, study, pass! Cool guy too with a lot of stories.
Be a teacher ive ever had. Really cares about students!
Calculus with him is hard as it gets. He doesn't teach and his final is HARD.
Great professor, makes the class entertaining and gives good lectures. Very flexible with his students. In this class, you get the grade you work for
Great teacher. Cares about the students. Great lectures. Hes really funny and does everything he can to make sure you understand the material. Math isnt an easy subject for me, but he made if fun and easy to understand!
Excellent teacher. Really sticks with you until you get it, which is what I needed from a math teacher. He's funny and makes the class really fun. Surprisingly, math really isn't hard. After learning from him, I have a new love for all things Algebra. Take him. You won't be sorry.
One of the best , funniest teachers ever ! He explains the lessons very well and goes over problems step by step . I will definitely miss his class.
Math 52 over the summer is so hard and very fast paced; however Mr. Lanier was a funny guy who really cared about each students success in the class. He would offer ways to lessen homework loads without lowering grades and he would help you until the sun came up if he had to. He's a funny guy who makes class kinda fun and isn't a hard grader.
I took the summer course and I actually enjoyed it. Math has never been my favorite subject but he was funny so I wasn't bored to death. Teaches really well and was a little lenient about how many homework problems you actually did. Actually teaches doesn't just do examples and expects you to understand. Glad he was my first college professor!
I had Mr. Lanier for math 21, he's such a cool person. He explains in detail regarding each and every lesson. He makes the class fun with his hilarious attitude. I've had many math teachers before but no teacher compares to Mr. Lanier. He's a must take for any math course.
I had professor Lanier for math 52 in the summer, he's a great person and a better professor. He makes the class entertaining and gives great lectures. He makes the subject easy to learn and he also gives extra credit!!!!
God bless this instructor. Math 52 with him made me realize how easy math can be to learn.
I really believe that there is no other professor that could teach calculus any more spectacularly than Shawn Lanier. He deconstructs math into manageable pieces with ease and will stop at any point to clarify if you need him to. He does tend to give more rather than less homework, but he makes himself available for help anytime. I will miss him.
I failed Calc II (twice, miserably) at another area school. I felt like a fool. I almost changed degrees. I decided to give it one last try at WCC with Lanier. I'm glad I did. Not only was I able to pass, but now I understand the material.
Professor Lanier is a great professor, going to take all my math classes till linear algebra, if you can take all your math i advise you to do so because he tests you on what you learn in class, do the hw and try to understand it, he's always happy to help explain the material. No surprise material, and he is a fair grader. Bonus, he's also funny
Easily the goat math teacher and also one of the best people you can meet . Will make your day and make you laugh and his class is fun. I love going to his class . Even if you're having a terrible day , his math class is a mood lifter and he explains the material very well.
When he explained how to do something, he took an hour. When my tutors explained how to do something, it took them 5 minutes.
I like his personality but I wish he would spend more time teaching than going off on tangents. His tests are a bit hard because I don't feel like he focuses on the material. He's disorganized and takes forever to grade things. I have to take him again but if I could, I would take someone else. I would only recommend to people good at math.
Lanier is a great professor. His tests are based on homework and lecture and uncomplicated. He cares about his students and makes the material easy to understand. Doing the homework is not necessary. He hates grading and takes forever to do it. He's lazy but an amazing instructor. I highly recommend taking classes with him!
Lanier is awesome, yes he is lazy when it comes to grading material takes a while to grade exams, but then again he has a lot of other classes he's teaching. He's very understanding and will help you if you go to his office hours. Final was a bit hard.
By far one of the best teachers Ive had. I had him over summer and he was the best teacher. Absolutely good at what he does. He makes everything so clear and makes it easy to understand. If you need help it doesnt matter he will guide you through it until you are comfortable with the material. Thanks Lanier for the summer course!
He use to be a good professor and I use to really like him before he got lazy. He just rushes through the material and doesn't take time to explain. Often, homework is much harder than what we did in class.
Great professor. Easy class.
Awesome Professor Supper funny. Very passionate about material makes class enjoyable. It is hard work but its expected in a math class.
WHAT A WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN FROM THIS PROFESSOR. MAKES CLASS FUNNY, INTERESTING AND ENJOYABLE. I WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND HIM.
Professor Lanier is an excellent teacher, and having been able to learn from him makes me wish I'd had him for all my math classes in the past. He is always entertaining and puts a lot of effort into making sure that everyone understands the concepts. He isn't lazy, he's energy efficient.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. He cares about the students and understands life happens. Class is fun, and the passion he has makes math a lot more meaninful and not just dry like in the books. Tests are not hard, they might be challenging but fair and always out of homework and lecture. Would definitely recommend to take his class.
Simply the best of the best. You must take him. Completely changed my prospective on math, actually made me enjoy the topic.
Really wonderful professor. He cares and is completely authentic
Absolutely the best professor ever.
A Math Professor has no business being as good and as fun as LaNier but he is and that's a simple fact. After having some bad run-ins and drops with 3 inadequate professors I decided to venture out to Woodland and this is worth every minute to commute as he breaks down Calculus into Layman's terms and fosters success within students.
You could not ask for a better Math teacher than Lanier. I took one of his classes in High School and he helped me understand math. When I saw him on the roster for college classes I knew I had to take his. I took his Summer & Fall class, he is extremely helpful and always willing to explain & show different ways to solver problems.
He is the best math professor ever. His tests are straightforward. His notes are clear. The final exam wasn't too difficult as long as you study. The tests are all written. Doing the hw will help. He is willing to help his students. The first test is the most difficult test but the others are easier. He curved the final exam and the first test.
Honest and straight forward
Good person, very chill, clearly loves math but he drags on about non-math things, he goes over notes way too quickly and expects you to automatically know what hes doing. His homework is nothing of what he teaches so you pretty much teach yourself from the book about what to do. If you arent very good at math, this professor isnt for you.
Took 3 semesters with Lanier, on my 4th. Pretty consistent throughout all 4. Quizzes are easy if you do the homework. Tests definitely require a thorough understanding, but far from impossible. He's always ready to explain topics further if you ask, both in class and outside. Does go on tangents about math/science related stuff, but I enjoy it tbh
Best math teacher ever, is always there to help you when you need it.
Taken this professor more than once just to confirm his consistency. He doesn't get lazy as one review has claimed, despite a semester that was manipulated by environmental circumstance he still manages to deliver his material during lectures.
This professor is the best professor ever. He does goes through each section step-by-step.
He wants you to pass. Clear lectures, he's obviously passionate about math, its like he's a professor. Make him do off topic math quickly or make him explain for the sake of your grade and he will explain the tihs out of it. Learn from his focus, maybe you'll pass.
Shawn Lanier is the best math professor ever! His tests are based off the homework. If you do the homework, you will get a good grade in his class. He does go on tangents about math related stuff, but it is actually very interesting to learn about the stuff professor Lanier shares in class.
Lanier is an awesome professor. Definitely taking 21 with him next time. He is really funny and gets really involved with his lectures. Everything that's on the test is in the notes and homework. There is quite a bit of homework but it's for personal use, never grades. Sometimes throws in hw questions on the test.
Hands down the best professor I ever had! He definitely cares about his class. Very passionate about math and he is always available to help anyone inside or outside class. He makes lectures interesting and entertaining and he is also very involved on campus.
If assigning teachers was like the NFL draft, Lanier would be the 1st round 1st pick overall for every student.
You'd be crazy to not want to take him for more than a semester. He'll make you love math if not at least make it fun. His lectures are engaging as well as unorthodox. Can't argue with his methods with the results he produces. He makes us more successful as people and not just as students. He'll see your potential before you do.
For several semesters and I say. If it ain't broke don't fix it. The only thing surprising is the fact that he doesn't live stream his lectures for online courses because he's perfect for an online class with his class structure. He's as consistent as he was in my first semester. Produces smart students with encouragement. The Definitive Math Prof.
After a bad experience with Math 50, I was scared for Math 52. Thankfully, I had Professor Lanier. He gives amazing lectures! He is funny, and made math easy to follow. I recommend you to take any of his classes because I am sure they are just as great as this class was!
He is an amazing math professor, he really cares about math and is very passionate about it. He explains each problem step-by-step and really wants you to understand each topic. You will need to work for your grade but, if you stay on top of your game... you will do great. Best math professor ever :)
Lanier is the best. He makes the class an enjoyable learning experience and explains how to do each problem step by step. I would recommend you take him.
I took this class online so i'm not sure if attendance is mandatory but he provided the online version of the textbook and his quizzes are really easy is you know the material.
I took Lanier's online class. I don't know how he's getting such good ratings on this website. In my experience, he was really hard to reach and discouraged students from contacting him. He relies solely on the textbook to teach his student's and provides inconsistent notes to 'help' and no videos. I can say a lot more but hopefully you get it.
Judging from the other reviews i'm sure that his in person class is better, but his online class could not be worse. The biggest positive is that the textbook is free. His notes are borderline unreadable, he actively tells you not to contact him for help, and he legitimately copied an english teacher's course intro for the canvas page initially.
Took both in person & online. Did not care for him in person, but I heard he was better for calculus. Wrong! It has been awful! We had to go to the dean about him. He doesnt want to help his students, takes a week to email you back, teaching is lazy, videos have so much background noise, if he even gets around to posting them. Final is proctored.
He seemed to try hard to teach us but most of it was self taught through Youtube for me. Professor Lanier has been through a lot this semester and he shared that with class so I understand, but he did have some videos for us and the free textbook he gave us helped. He let us use our notes on the final and we had a research paper too (super easy.)
Took him for 5 semesters straight. Despite the pandemic, he made a comeback and adapted better than most if not all community college professors. His energy is not always like it is in person but he still has the passion that shows he's the Math Champion in teaching and learning. Shows you how to be a great student in life not just in school. 5/5
He is an amazing professor. You dont have to attend the zoom sessions because he posts a link to it so you can watch whenever you can. Book is needed but he gives it to us for free. He was really understanding and lenient especially because of COVID. He keeps the class updated and talks to us daily through these updates/announcements which I like
I HIGHLY recommend taking math with professor Lanier. He is very passionate about math and can answer any questions you have. You decide how many homework problems you want to do (you have to do some, but no set requirement) and there are a couple of tests and quizzes. I am going to miss him next semester, wish he could teach every math class.
Professor Lanier is arguably one of the professors I have ever had. He is very passionate about what he does and always makes his lectures entertaining. He makes sure that no one gets behind and has no problem expanding on topics whenever needed. As long as you pay attention and at least attempt the homework, you will excel in his class.
He makes it clear from day one that if you need help, you need to speak up and ask questions, he will always make sure you understand if you ask. He is hilarious and makes math overall very entertaining. He has tricks to help you remember information, and isn't a harsh grader. It's still math, but he makes it fun and interesting.
If you see Professor Lanier's name on a class, TAKE IT! Professor Lanier was hilarious, fair, and possibly the most passionate person for math I have ever met. He truly loves what he does, and encourages students to be involved in the class, and speak up for what they need, and is understanding. Best math professor I have ever had.
He's the best, man. Just attend every class and listen and you will get it, he's an amazing teacher.
Class was a joke.
Very nice guy! I finally feel more comfortable with math after having so many bad experiences with math teachers, Lanier has been my first teacher that has made me feel comfortable around math.
Can't wait to take linear algebra next, muhahahahahahahahhah.
Muhahahahahahaha .
Thorough, well-explained lectures. Flexible on homework assignments. Most of the class graded based on tests. Responds to emails.
Awesome professor. I took it fall 2024 and currently taking his calc 2 class. If you show up, you're guaranteed to pass. Ask questions, go to his office hours, and you'll have no trouble! First teacher to actually make me enjoy math.
Lanier is an amazing professor! Just show up and take notes and you'll do great. He's very relaxed and made class fun.
Amazing Professor, took him for all my math courses at WCC. He has always been helpful and explained the concepts in lecture very well. His notes are extremely helpful as well. Overall, I will miss having him as my math professor.
The best Math professor you will ever have. I've had him for several classes and he is simply amazing.
Great lectures and he keeps things interesting. He also records the lectures and uploads them to Canvas, along with the in-class notes, so there is always a solid resource if you didn't understand something during class. He gives about 3 exams + a final, and a couple of quizzes in between, but he always provides a study guide to prepare.
Highly recommend this professor! He's approachable and really cares for his students. TAKE HIM!
Very funny, goes over content thoroughly, and provides samples before a test day (they're the exact same as the actual thing but with different numbers). Attend class and you'll learn everything that's needed. There are three quizzes (25% total) and two tests (25% total). The final is 25%. Drops the lowest quiz + HW score. Overall, fantastic!
