Its not a terribly difficult class. If you read the book you should do fine. For lectures all he does is basically go over the same information. The in class work is really easy, the access project is time consuming but it tells you everything to do. Overall not a terrible teacher, better than most.
I really liked this class, surprisingly. It is a harder subject just because you have learned nothing like it before. I never missed a class, read the textbook, asked him questions and I got a an A. He works in the field so he tries to keep it interesting, overall I think you should definitely take him!
Do not take him. He made the class way harder than it had to be. Class is extremely boring and long. It is full of fairly difficult concepts and assignments that he does not explain well
This class is slighly challenging, however, if you ask questions he will help you succeed. For his tests, if you read the chapters and know all vocabulary terms then you will ace the test! The Access Projects are rather difficult but he'll help you if you are stuck!
I do not understand these ratings, professor Lough is such a great guy! You should definitely take him for COB204, he tries his best to make a really boring class interesting and usually succeeds in doing so. He does work in the field and definitely knows what he's talking about.
Professor Lough is the man! 204 is a pretty dry class in general but he always spices it up with easy group case studies that help you understand. The tests are multiple choice and straight forward. Go to class because he does a lot of group work and you will be fine. He works in the field so he is really understanding. Great guy. Great professor
The class is boring, but he tries to be engaging and make people care about the content. Talks about his job a lot to give real life examples of stuff in the text and on his slides. Tests are curved and there aren't any quizzes, some graded classwork that he collects though. I'd definitely take him again.
Prof. Lough is easy to get along with and is well versed in this field. He uses real world examples to simplify the concepts to easily understandable terms. Class goes by quickly, and I feel as though I actually learn the content. Great advice that students can use in future careers is also given on a daily basis!
I really enjoyed his class! He teaches from a business professional, not educators, perspective so he gives great real world advice and examples. Easy chapter quizzes for most classes, tells you exactly which sections to study for exams, and the access project is pretty much the same for all professors. I SUGGEST HIM!
Lough does so much more than teach you about MIS. He prepares you on how to succeed in the business world. Access was really time consuming, but other than that the class is fairly easy. His final project is kind of fun too. Definitely recommend him.
Wayyyy too much talking about his primary job, but not a hard class. Material is relatively easy and he helps you understand anything you may not get right away.
Professor Lough does this stuff for a living. He teaches on the side and is able to provide real-life examples to explain concepts. 5 question quizzes are every week and his tests are straight forward. He is extremely easy to contact through email and provides help whenever you need it. I highly recommend him.
Lough is the King, super understanding about everything. I once accidentally turned in the wrong assignment which was worth a large portion of the grade and he understood the mistake and took no points off. You will learn more about business in this class than CIS.. and you learn a lot of CIS
LOVED THIS PROFESSOR. If you are willing to put in effort you will get an A. Has very short quizzes on a chapter every week but just skimming you could get a 100. Great professor, and tells you exactly what to study for exams. Some in class assignments to boost grade also. TAKE HIM!!!!!!!!
Prof. Lough spends most of class speaking about his job and the business world, mostly how to survive. He goes over the info and gives a 5 question quiz (12 of them) with a few fair exams if you study a little. Pretty easy and helpful in the end, although evening classes mess-up your schedule.
There are reading quizzes just about every week, but as long as you read the chapter you are fine. He teaches the class from a the business perspective, and it is really a life style coach class.
Does not prepare you AT ALL for the final exam. Lectures all circulate around himself and his job and do not indulge in the actual content in the book, so basically you're stuck to learn everything on your own. Reading quizzes are hard and drop your grade. Overall I really don't recommend.
Lough can be intimidating at the beginning of the semester. But he is honestly not trying to trick any students and just wants you to do the work, come prepared, and do your best! Access assignments can be tough but thats for any COB 204 class no way to avoid it. Definitely take him, he's understandable and his lectures are easy to follow. TAKE HIM
Professor Lough is a great professor and I really enjoyed taking 204 with him. He wants his students to succeed and seek for help. He does talk about his job(s) during class, but it's relevant information that will help in the business world. He gives online assignments and tests. Pretty straightforward and easy class. Got a B+. Highly recommend.
definitely take Lough for this course he really helps for the access project. Weekly online quizzes that are easy if you read and take notes and the exams were not too difficult. Lough wants you to do well not only in the class but later in life
Professor Lough is a great foundation professor especially for CIS majors. He is very clear and direct from what he wants from you, especially on the Access assignments. His tests aren't meant to trick you. It may seem like he's rambling about his jobs, but he provides valuable insight for the business world through is personal stories. Take him.
I didn't like computer information systems to begin with but his class made it worse. I absolutely loathed waking up to go to his class. There are four access projects which he grades harshly and then the access final project and sharepoint assignment. He doesn't really teach from the book just talks about old jobs he had. STAY FAR FAR AWAY.
This class was pretty easy. The access projects are a pretty big part of your grade but if you do it right then it is a very easy A. His lectures go very off topic and really have nothing to do with what the tests are on but are pretty interesting and about real world. His test come from the textbook and can be pretty hard if you don't study.
He's very condescending and claims he wants to help you as much as possible until you actually have a problem, at which point he offers little to no help. If you have a question on something you said in class might as well ask a friend. Makes you do the project way to early and grades it too harshly. Find someone else if you can.
Shawn is a chill guy. He does enforce attendance, but recommends you come because he gives 1 question assignment for points. For some chapters you'll get an online reading quiz that he doesn't tell you about so just check canvas frequently. His tests are mainly vocabulary based, so pay attention to the readings and the power point sides.
This class was a very easy class for me. As long as you read, and study, you will get an A. The reading quizzes are easy (as long as you read) and the tests are 50 q multiple choice all based off the textbook. Access is easy if you can follow directions and he is accessible outside of class if you need help.
He has a lot of experience in the job from previous jobs. He is clearly passionate about the subject and is able to relate to the real world and his students. He is also very laid-back and understanding, he loves leaders and people who participate in class. Definitely a great choice.
I took CIS 498 SharePoint. Linearly the BEST professor in college of Business. I learned a lot regarding share point and it is helpful in real life keeping the fact that almost every firm from KPMG, PWC, Booz and many other firms highly use share-point. If you put in work A is guaranteed
These reviews say he goes off topic to talk about his past, but in reality it is kind of awesome to hear what it is really like in the real world careers pertaining to CIS. He's down to earth and genuinely cares about teaching. Only grades tough on Access Projects (just follow directions), otherwise he's really there to help you out.
Lough is a nice guy that genuinely wants to help. I did, however, do more work for this class than other 204 classes did. You have to read the textbook to pass online quizzes and the SharePoint project was pretty time consuming. I do feel like I learned a lot though and would take Lough again. Not an easy A though.
Professor Lough may be one of my favorite professors that I've ever had (had him in the fall). He's extremely personable, and is always willing to help his students. His tests and quizzes aren't too hard; as long as you pay attention in class and read over the material once or twice, you should do just fine. I would definitely take Lough again.
Lough likes to focus on important topics in cob 204, so while you'll have quizzes on textbook material most of his projects/assignments are focused on real-world things. He's very clear on instructions and is always helpful outside of class. Just do all of the assignments/quizzes, follow the instructions on projects and you'll do well.
The work load for this class is ridiculous. He acts like his class is our only class. CONSTANT reading from the textbook and quizzes all the time on it. If you don't read the textbook and don't know how to teach yourself you will not pass. He comes off as rude to me and makes very smart comments to the class.
Lough's class is pretty easy. 4 access assignments and an access project. Not very hard to get an A on them all. (Just in case though, make sure you know someone in class for help cuz Lough wont just give you the answer). 2 tests and a fianl. First test was easy, second was a little harder. Reading quizzes all easy if you do the reading. Solid Prof
Trys to intimidate his students by saying you wont be sleeping well if you don't start an assignment 5 days in advance. He also talks so much about his personal life and a lot of the time it doesn't relate to the material we're talking about from the book. On top of all that, he is extremely rude even if you go visit him during office hours.
He's one of my favorite human beings ever. Genuinely nice guy. Greater professor. One time a good amount of students didn't show to class and he said "Write your name on a piece of paper and turn it in for a quiz grade." Go to class. He rewards you for doing so. Very accessible outside of class. Great experience with him. Would 100% take again.
Never teaches anything in class. Have to do everything on your own and the Tests seem extremely hard when you're taking them but somehow you get a somewhat good grade. NEVER TEACHES!
Solid prof for 204--very approachable during his office hours and drops the lowest 4 quizzes (most of them were open note). Curved almost every test (3 straight from powerpoint). Helps a lot with access projects, so visit him during office hours. Expect to do a lot of learning on your own since his lectures are boring and not always helpful.
I definitely taught myself a lot of the information in this class because Lough would skim over it, however, Lough is a really smart guy and he is very relatable. He finds attendance important and a lot of easy assignments are done in class, so show up!!! I found the first test to be difficult, simply because I didn't know what to expect.
Its a very easy class but Lough can be very condescending and rude. Went to him during his office hours to ask about an assignment and was immediately berated and insulted for not understanding the info. Can be unreasonable when grading and takes things too personally to make matters worse. Ironically awful at the marketable skills he teaches.
Tests are on unrelated topics. Will assign quizzes weekly but they really don't relate to the tests at all. Gets openly mad at students in class and gives assignments that are vaguely applicable.
Although attendance is not mandatory, not given a chance to skip. All classes have some graded work and cannot make up if skipping. Always doing some homework or studying. Tests are impossible and quizzes on readings do not benefit you. He seems like a funny guy outside of class, but as a professor does not help your business GPA.
This is the rudest professor ever! He makes everything seem so serious like you are going to fail if you do one thing wrong. The way he talks to his students is berating/condescending. The class itself is easy, but not the way he structures it with case studies that do NOT help you with the actual material. Also don't expect to learn from lectures.
His behavior can be rude and talks about his personal life more than the material. Would not take again.
He can seem intimidating, but as long as you dont act out of place you shouldnt have a problem. Hes very understanding and helpful during his office hours, as well. Read the chapters and you should be fine.
Professor Lough didn't fully teach in a way you would expect. It was more of you read outside of the class and sit in a lecture to listen to him connect it to real life which helped me apply what I was learning. There were times where I questioned the group activities. Felt like busy work. He waits to grade everything until after the final...
Make sure you read the chapter before the lecture, he really tries to connect the topics to real life. This can sometimes be ranty, or seem off topic. If you don't read you'll struggle. He drops the 4 lowest quizzes and is very fair with opportunities to bump your grade. Kinda hard to know how your doing cause he waits to grade a lot of stuff.
This class is pretty straightforward. If you put in the effort you will do well. If you want to do well on the tests just make sure you study all of the vocab terms in the chapter. Not too difficult of a class but it does require a lot of time to complete the assignments and access projects.
Class was easy but this man was so boring that I decided to transfer to another school. True story.
Absolutely love him. There were 3 exams&a final. 14 quizzes, if you do the reading from the chapter he assigned they are easy 10/10&he drops your 4 lowest quiz grades! there are 4 small access projects along with a big one, but he gives u the book with all the directions for them! an A is easily achievable if ur willing to do the work!10/10 rec!!
Goes off on a lot of random tangents. Honestly not really sure what this class is even about but read the textbook and you'll do fine. You can go to office hours for clarification, especially with access but listen to what he is saying because he gets mad easily lol
Be prepared to study. Class instruction is very minimal, he usually gives his life story on the topic and how he relates to it rather than going over specifics. Lots of HW that took HOURS to complete for a minimal grade. Would not recommend this professor.
Whatever you do, DO NOT TAKE HIM. Literally doesn't teach at all and will put you to sleep or make you want to tell him to shut up. Doesn't actually teach you anything and when he tries to explain stuff he always relates it to his life which half the time doesn't make sense. His exams can be confusing but quizzes are easy. just don't take him.
Lough is definitely one of the more challenging professors for 204... in order to do well you HAVE to read the book and take notes on your own because he does not go over material very well in lecture. But, he does tend to cancel class a lot. Overall, you can do well you just need to put in the work and study.
One of the best professors I've seen at JMU; treats class like a business which discourages some people but in the end it's worth it and you learn a lot. You have 4 access projects (every 204 class does), as well as a final big group project. Lots of random mini collaboration projects during semester. Good professor who cares if you're respectful
His class is not easy at all. He will give a quiz every class. The tests are heavy, the access project didn't help at all. He didn't show student clearly what we want to see but give you a hard grade. He is not caring for his students. NEVER GIVE EXTRA CREDIT. NOT RECOMMENDED.
He assigns work that is due unreasonably soon for the length and difficulty of the assignment. Additionally he projects an extremely aggressive attitude one minute and the next acts completely different. No room for error on access assignments whatsoever. Uses lots of scare tactics during class.
Strict guy, no funny business. Can tell he knows his material well and is respected within his industry.
I read some reviews and felt like clearing the air.. Shawn Lough isn't like the bad reviews make him out to be. Many people are just realizing how much work college courses take and they're being dramatic. He speaks sternly and makes jokes on occasion, but never condescending when I visited for help. Put the work in and you will pass just fine!
I've had Mr. Lough for two online classes so far and from what I can tell, I have to work harder in his courses than other online classes I've had so far, but I also feel more rewarded from doing so. His classes are never unfairly difficult and as long as I've put forth an effort to learn, I've had no problems with him at all.
He was not very helpful. When I took his class, he often digressed on stuff that had no relation to the class. This is supposed to be an easier class, but Lough made it very difficult to receive a decent grade.
Professor Lough does not give much help to his students. Whenever a student asks for help he either says "the expectations are there" or that he already went over it in class, which he most likely did not. His tests are way harder than they should be because they focus on the application of the terms rather than definitions, which other teachers do
worst professor at JMU. Doesnt care about his students and will not help you. Complete hardo that makes you feel terrible about yourself after a project when you spend hours upon hours on a project just to get a terrible grade. Won't help you in any which way
Professor Lough is the most condescending person I have ever met. He claims that his class will help you in the business world but he is completely unprofessional. He makes rude remarks to students and is not willing to work with you despite how respectful you are. He does not have basic respect for students.
Good Solid Professor. Very straightforward with expectations. In class he is tough but when you go talk to him in office hours he is really nice and a lot more understanding if you don' understand something. For projects GO EARLY TO OFFICE HOURS. He doesn' like things that are last minute. You get the grade that you put in the work for.
If you are good with Microsoft Access, you will do great. Projects focus on that and are not hard but time consuming. Tests are fair but final project is hard. Final project is not always assigned so cross your fingers he forgets about it. Lough is funny and treats his students like adults. Good professor overall.
Treats his class like he is the boss of a company and all his students work for him 40 hours a week. He doesn't understand students take classes other than his own. Will make you do lots of bs work that mostly doesn't pertain to the tests. Also doesn't have a nice bone in his body. Don't recommend
I thought his rating would be higher. This class is pretty simple besides the access projects which can be tricky but if you read the textbook and take notes in class you should be fine. The tests are super easy and straightforward. There is a group project too thats worth a bit, but wasnt bad from what I can remember.
Professor Lough is the best professor I have had at JMU thus far. His lectures are extremely clear, as our his class expectations. I recommend him as a top choice for anyone taking COB204
You either love or hate this man. I chose to give him a chance and he was my favorite professor. Go to office hours and show you care, also take tests serious, other than that if you really listen to him you learn hes cares ALOT, pushed you to become a better person and student and loves what he does, he also is pretty funny
Avoid this professor at all costs. He is extremely rude and overbearingly boastful about his life that will make you feel indirectly degraded. I had a 89.99% in his class and he wouldn't round it up. He also won't help you with Access assignments, don't even bother asking.
He's a litte bit too passionate about the literate least important lower level COB class, but you get out what you put into it. His exams can be tricky though, you really need to know the concepts and be able to apply them well to pass.
Shawn Lough is the pinnacle of everything wrong with education. He will mess up nearly all of his "planned assignments" and then when they fall through, show 30 minutes of a useless presentation. And not only that, if YOU happen to mess something up he will talk to you as though you're too stupid to deserve his presence. Worst prof I've ever had.
Very passionate but makes 204 harder than needed. Be very respectful, get on his good side, and if you go for help show you've put in the effort. He is helpful if you go to office hours with real questions. His quizzes are usually open note but his tests are pretty difficult. Get him to check your Access and dont go to the bathroom during class.
Guys on his powertrip 24/7. One of "those" professors. You know what im talking about.
One of the easiest classes made to be very difficult. If you can... take another professor. Lough refused to round my 86.99% to 87. He's very hostile if you ask for assistance, assigns SO MUCH unnecessary work that other 204 classes will not assign, and the final project that he has is one of the worst things you'll see for a pre req class. Awful.
He kind of rants a lot but is very clear in his grading. The quizzes are fairly straightforward but the tests are slightly difficult, so its recommended you read the chapter and take notes on them.
At first I thought Prof. Lough was mean and just a tough grader, but over the course I started he really pretty reasonable in challenging students. He does a good job preparing students for competition in the real business world, and if you put in the work you will pass his class. Lots of quizzes for textbooks reading but they're all short and EZ
Prof. Lough was a good choice, he's a nice guy and responds to emails within the day.
He takes the class way to seriously, felt like I was in a military academy or something. I've never had a professor be genuinely rude to me in an email before him. Don't expect to be treated kindly if you reach out. Lectures are completely useless, and the assignments are hard and often cover things that he doesn't teach. Avoid if possible.
Shawn Lough is a solid choice for 204. He is a little but of a hard case, but he does a good job teaching as long as you pay attention. His lectures can get boring, but considering the subject matter, he does a decent job. Read the textbook and pay careful attention to specific grading criteria for assignments and you will do fine.
Professor Lough isn't helpful to his students. His lectures are very vague and expects you to learn from a textbook. He isn't a good teacher if you want to actually learn, very baed off teaching yourself. I would not take this class. Reading quizzes after most classes and the tests are challenging.
Shawn Lough is definitely very educated on the topic and takes great pride in it. That being said, he is very accessible to help and does everything in his will to help students. He is a tough guy, but only to bring the best out of his students. Tests are easy, assignments are harder and sometimes time consuming. I would definitely recommend him.
I thought that I was doing awfully in this class and wouldn't pass because I felt like I wasn't learning anything and then I took the final and I realized that I actually had been learning the information and did really well. He's a bit uptight but he knows what he's teaching and he makes sure to give you all of the info. Make sure to read the book
Dr. Lough has a hard nosed personality and is often deceitful and rude to his students. He will assign assignments where a class could follow the directions word from word and still have a majority of the class get an insufficient grade. As a result, he'll put a rubric up after the assignment was turned in as a "cya". Overcomplicates 204. DONT TAKE
Not helpful whats so ever. Does not give adequate information about assignments and exams. overall 1/5 rating. never against
Very rude, concepts are not the easiest and gets mad when you don't understand and ask a question. Very cold person, will not round even by .01, to do well had to go to his office hours 4 times in 2 days to just get an 80 on project. Tests are online which is good but the assignments and projects will kill you
The exams that he gives are easy but he is cold person and doesn't understand that students need to ask questions and got mad when they did so. Also all of his exams are on Socratic but don't let that fool you, on the final exam non of it is on Socratic and is very hard. But overall good class and interesting material, just a eritable professor.
attendance is MANDATORY if youre five minutes late you get counted absent and lose credit, his grading criteria is clear but its full credit or no credit. if it isnt EXACTLY what he wants you get a 0. there are tons of assignments so it is possible to get a few 0s and still get a good grade, but hes very stuck up and doesnt repeat himself.
To keep in mind, this is his first semester teaching this class. He did not seem to know what he was doing, lectures were useless. Be prepared to learn on your own by reading and just googling b/c not everything is in the book. I went to office hours many times and he went through many lengths to not give us a direct answer.
been in his class for 3 lectures and he sucks
Makes COB 204 WAYYY harder than it should be. Other professors will give you more time on tests with easier material. Shawn Lough should be your absolute LAST choice for a professor for 204.
idk this class is just awful anyway. he tries its just boring. lots of assignments that he takes forever to grade which is annoying. he's not awful id say just average, its like good enough I guess.
He is not a nice person, gone to him multiple times and he doesn't want to help you. Will blatantly be rude to students in class. His class isn't the hardest, not a lot of homework but he rambles on and on all class it is so boring. Tests can be sort of hard because in class he never gets through his whole PowerPoints so it is up to you to learn.
He is pretty straightforward and has clear criteria. There are weekly reading quizzes that are all on socratic, exams aren't too bad but make sure you study. class is engaging. There are sometimes in class assignments that are due at the end of class so class is lowkey "mandatory". He can be very sarcastic but as a professor I would take him again.
There are 3 tests including the final, multiple take home quizzes and lots of random assignments. Professor Lough is a great teacher when he is going over the topics, Unfortunately he will go over only one slide every 45 minutes in class and go off on multiple tangents about his life and previous jobs. Turn in every assignment and study the slides.
Dude is actually a dickhead for no reason, he needs to relax. super uninviting. wont even look away from his screen when u ask him questions at office hours. with that being said, pretty easy class
If you read the textbook for this class its pretty easy to pass. He doesn't really care if people pass or fail. His power points suck bc they're straight from the textbook but he does in class graded assignments so go to class. No curves or extra credit on anything. Loves to talk about himself and his past. Would take someone else if possible.
50 question exams in 55 minutes, final is 70 in 75 minutes. he'll give you a little card to write notes on, but if you're actually using it, there's no way you're getting through the entire exam. The dude talks big, yet he's never made a six figure salary. Get ready to see him rage out if someone leaves to use the restroom during a lecture.
He is lowkey such an ass for no reason. Kind of like a strict dad in a way. The class itself is not terrible, I could have definitely tried harder. Gives you a notecard for each test and the final, several projects, linked in learning stuff, and several quizzes. Not a terrible choice but def not the best.
He explained carefully and patiently. It's a bit of work, but overall it's pretty good
strict about random things (ex. not using the bathroom during class), unorganized, not usually clear in his instructions. assigns 1 reading after each exam, always around 100 pages w/ only until the next class to get it done - no warning about what chapters it'll be on beforehand - all the material you'll need is usually in the book though!!
The dude is just lame. The class is easy, only made up of chapter quizzes, a few database projects, and 3 tests + a little extra credit at the end of the course. My only gripe is that Lough has an annoying personality. He'll have a few favorites but will treat everyone else like trash. Short-tempered that it questions why he chose to be a teacher.
I didn't think I had actually learned anything from this class until the end of the semester when I took the final and got a good grade. He is a strict professor and quite serious but he is clear and to the point. There were group assignments that we worked on and technological assignments we had to do. He is big on LinkedIn.
I enjoyed Professor Lough's class. There's a lot of reading and homework but if you keep up with it all. You will have a guaranteed A or B.
Lough was ok. It was obvious to me that his main focus was preparing students for COB300 as well as the real business world, but that led to some assignments that felt kind of useless. Sometimes gives in-class assignments but lectures aren't great. I could tell that he just wanted us to learn, but that didn't always translate well into class.
Dude is an ass. He has a big ego and will talk about himself for forever. He is also so slow at grading work, often taking months to grade assignments. That wouldn't be an issue if he wasn't also demanding and inconsiderate when assigning work that cannot be turned in a second late. Yells if you have to pee. Dude's just some lame on a power trip.
Professor Lough may seem like he cares about his students in his lectures, but he simply has no regard for any of his students. He has never replied to me or anyone I know in the class when it comes to emails, he will then make it seem like it was your fault that he didn't look at your email. Puts on a facade for class and cannot uphold it outside
When it comes to the material covered, in general, I would say that it was pretty interesting. However, to me, it felt like Professor Lough was scolding us when he taught. He also seemed to get upset if you asked questions. Saw him really chew out a guy for asking a question he thought was obvious. Anyway, you get a notecard on exams, so thats nice
I could tell that Mr. Lough cares about his students. He had review guides for exams which was helpful and if you read the notes/textbook & went to class you're guaranteed at least a B. He would get mad sometimes for no reason and his emails were always aggressive. He was allowed to make mistakes but we weren't. I've had worse professors.
Makes the class way to much about real life and never gets the point of anything. His office hours he will just make you cry and is not helpful at all, even if you come to him with questions he will make you figure it out on your own.
One of the only professors I ever had who purposefully tried to be mean and intimidating. Will spend the majority of the class talking about things not relevant to the material and then expect you to teach yourself and just use him to ask questions (even though he probably will refuse to answer them). Overall just not nice and very unforgiving.
Lough was the worst professor I have ever had, avoid him at all costs. He would make students feel stupid and be reluctant to help even if you attended office hours. He was so full of himself and thought he was better than all his students. I taught myself most of the material bc during class he would just rant and complain. Worst prof ever.
I suggest avoiding this teacher in whatever class he teaches. You will have to teach everything yourself. This professor will not help you in his office hours, if you go he will often respond with "I taught this in class" or calling you stupid. 30 students for 1 office hour is not a good sign for an assignment. If you do get him, I am sorry.
He could lowkey be mean sometimes but other than that if you go to class and study the PowerPoints you'll do great.
Professor Lough is somewhat self-absorbed. He talked about himself for an hour and fifteen minutes on the first day of class and tried (but failed) to connect his life experiences to the coursework. I didn't think it was that bad until I saw that rough draft PA flowcharts only get you credit if you're correct, but otherwise, you get a zero.
There's not a ton positive to say about this professor. He preaches business practices and standards but tends to miss meetings and cancel/miss his own office hours. He makes mistakes in his own assignments and tests concepts that aren't emphasized. Most of his classes consist of him talking about himself, if you ask him a question he's unhelpful.
This was the worst professor I have ever had. I went through a crisis and he showed no flexibility or sympathy when I was trying to make up work that I had missed. It's disheartening to see his priorities as a professor and that a students mental and physical health isn't included.
Worst teacher I've had at JMU. In CIS 221, I understood why students disliked him. Lough spends 40 of 50 minutes talking about his life, then assigns projects you're expected to figure out yourself. For 331 he uses Ezzells textbook and slides, took over a month to grade 1 test, spam-assigned work, and focused on a Halloween costume contest instead.
Lough can be picky, but the class is pretty straightforward if you stay on top of the material. Utilize Unstuck ai and the free textbook - they were lifesavers for me. Attend class, avoid your phone, and you'll likely do well.
Avoid if possible. Almost felt like crying in office hours after asking a questions. He sounded angry at us for the question, but everyone went that day to ask about that line. All he does in class is talk about himself the whole class and then expect you to figure out assignments by yourself or with the help of a prerecorded video (not his video).
Long Story Short. He is just okay, he can be nice, but he can also more often than not he can be very rude. Didn't go in depth when we learned coding concepts and you will need to rely on AI if you actually want to learn. Workbook is helpful. Get on this guy's good side if you want to do well! Overall, pretty average experience.
Great teacher most of the learning is through projects but he does cram a lot into the last 3 weeks of the semester I think it could be a lot more spread out but overall a good guy
This Guy is really mean and not that good at teaching. Not the end of the world if you get him but he has a lot of anger in his heart and he takes it out on his students.
Most unorganized, self absorbed professor I've taken at jmu. He spends 75% of every class talking about himself and situations that are unimportant to lecture. He is also very unresponsive to most emails, having to email him 2-3 times to setup a time to meet during office hours.
Very strict but if you connect with him one-on-on he will help you. He is VERY straightforward and does not care about your feelings or what you are dealing with. You will spend A LOT of time outside of the classroom working on the materials in the class. It is not an easy class and requires all of your attention DO NOT skip this class.
Professor Lough is a nicer/better professor than what many people will let on. His stories about his experiences in "industry" actually do apply well for the content of the class, so it helps make it more engaging. However, he can be an imposing figure, as he has high expectations from his students and expects you to behave as such.
One of the most self centered profs I have ever had the opportunity to take. Most classes consist of him talking about his professional career and going over the answers to the homework that was assigned with no lecture attached. If you have no prior python coding knowledge good luck. Easy 4 tests including final, homework almost every day.
Self-absorbed, no actual lectures on textbook material, and very unhelpful outside of class. With that being said, exams are not hard and if you get on his good side, he will favor you. Speaks a lot about how material translates into the business world and it doesn't really. I would've preferred lectures and homework, but not as bad as people say.
