great guy. has great examples and always trys to answer your question until he is sure that you understand. he makes the class very interesting and easy to learn. if i could i would love to have for all of the biology classes i have to take. but studying is still manditory.
Dr. Magner is great! He uses real examples to make things clear. Always makes sure your questions are answered. Keeps the class entertaining. Takes extra time to make sure you understand. Not an easy grade, but makes a hard subject easier.
Great teacher. Keeps it interesting. You really have to work for you grade - but there's nothing wrong with that. My biggest complaint is that he doesn't like to get grades up in a very timely manner - I don't think he understands the anxiety that creates in the students... or maybe is OK with that...
Super nice guy but I would strongly advise avoiding him like the plague. I never knew what would be on the tests, he never kept on track with his lectures, he was bad at explaining things, he is very unorganized and an overall bad professor.
Dr. Magner is VERY nice and makes the class very interesting but his tests are nearly imposible to interpret. He doesn't post grades quickly and never answers his e-mails. Too bad, he is so nice!
If you come to class you will know what is on the test. Shawn's tests are hard, but it is ALL covered in class. He invites questions, and if you need extra help, he is more than willing to help. He is SLOW to post grades, and tends to add extra powerpoints after you've already printed them. If you apply yourself an A is possible.
He thinks it's funny to make his tests hard and even funnier to trip you up on his tests. I don't think he's a fair teacher. Also if people are talking in class and being disruptive he doesn't tell them to stop. Says his main line of communication is email but he never responds.
Shawn not a good professor. His tests are very hard to understand. Questions very general, without any anatomy/physiology logic. I got my chem/bio degree from another country, but taking this professor for my anatomy class just did chaos in my head. Explanations not clear, hard tests,so almost impossible to get an A. Mark Robichaud much-much better
Anybody can say whatever they like but this professor is a good, goes direct to the point when he teach, does not descriminate and always avaliable to help.
Magner, he's a brilliant instructor, give extra points very helpful whenever you ask him question. He is definitely not like some of those mean BIO INSTRUCTORS.Student's STOP criticized the man and study.
Dr. Magner is a nice guy and all but I have never been so lost in a course. He encourages reading the text, but then doesn't follow it, he never answers his e-mails, and he is rude to students when they ask questions. Shouldn't be teaching a beginners Bio class for sure! GOOD LUCK! YOU WILL NEED IT!!!!
If you need to understand the subject and need a good grade don't take him. He is very confusing doesn't give extra credit or bonus points. Always has errors on his exams. He is nice but not a good teacher. Going to lecture is even more confusing than not going. Its better not to attend and just teach yourself.
All of the people who have him for Bio 1106 have complaints! Clearly he's stepping up more in his other classes. SO hard to understand any of the content, and on the tests your better off guessing! He's one of those teachers who's smart but doesn't know how to teach, and shouldn't.
The instructor is trying is best, what do want the man to do give the student's answers. Student's read your book and you will do good on your exams.Stop criticizing and study, study.
Sean is an intelligent professor who knows the material being taught. He does not discriminate and he will help when you need it. The course itself is hard so if you arent pulling yourself together wanting to succeed you wont. Dont blame that on the professor. I did summer school and all free time is devoted to studying period!
I found Shawn to be tough but fair. I worked hard for my B but it was also an accelerated summer course. Tests were direct content from lectures and Shawn always answered questions. I thought he taught the topic with ease and used real life examples which helped me to remember.
I took Shawn's A&P course over the summer so it was accelerated. Yes, this class is hard but if you listen to him in lecture and follow along you will have no problem getting a good grade. He was extremly helpful in answering any questions I had in the class. Just study the power point notes and skim the text chapters and youll be fine. I got an A.
Magner is an awesome teacher. He WILL help you - just ask him. But you can't expect to get an A if you put in no effort. And this is what soooo many studnets want to just skate by.........You will be nothing but mundane your entire life
I had A&P 1&2 with him. Reading the book and studying from his power points are key to do well on his tests. If you have questions ask, he is happy to help! I had to work hard for my grade, but it was worth it and in the end I learned so much from his classes. I would recommend taking him!
Shawn is one of the best teachers I've had. He is a very intelligent man and he lectures clearly and at just the right pace. He is happy to answer questions. He expects students to work hard from day one. I visited him in his office after class many times and we would talk more about biology and issues relating to it. Not an easy class though
Dr.Magner is a awesome Professor. He is very nice to work with. He is very willing to help you as well, but you have to ask. This is not a easy class, but with hard work and talking with Dr. Magner you can pass his class.
Professor Magner really appreciates biology and was very enthusiastic. His explanations were completely clear, and the tests were not very difficult. I fell in love with biology after taking this class and now I am majoring in biomedical engineering.
I would highly recommend Dr. Magner to any student who has to take biology. He is an excellent lecturer and makes the harder concepts easier to understand by making comparisons to real life. His power points are clear and made available to print for notes. His tests are passible if you read the text and go to class. I got an A! Take him!
hat a great teacher, very fair, consistant, notes match the exam- you must study for the grade!I would recommend him to everyone!
I have had Magner as a professor before, and I would definitely recommend him. He gives great examples in lecture to help make the material easier to break down. He does tend to ramble a bit but it usually is relevant and pretty funny. You can tell he is extremely passionate about teaching!
He is an all around good guy. But his tests are extremely hard if you are a bad test taker. He does not give very much detail into what to study. So if u don't know it all, good luck. He is a pretty good professor, but gets off track alot. Very funny. But if you want an A in his class, you will have no life. C work hard.
Very good professor! I highly recommend him. He is very willing to help and is very passionate about doing so. His tests are difficult but if you study hard they should be doable.
Dr. Magner is incredibly intelligent and more than willing to help you understand the material. The tests are very difficult, they require you to read and understand the chapters prior to class in order to receive a great grade. I wish I would have realized this sooner!! Highly recommended for aspiring students. he makes an 8am class enjoyable.
Dr. Magner is a wonderful professor. His notes are concise&while he moves back& forth through them he is more than willing to stop for questions. I've never had a better professor &he certainly challenges me in great ways! If you aren't willing to work hard don't bother taking him because he expects your all.Attendance isn't mandatory BUT GO ANYWAY
Dr. Magner is a good professor with high expectations. You will need to study for his class. He is very willing to help and wants students to learn their biology and do well. He can be a bit disorganized at times and he does tell some stories but it is usually relevant and funny.
Great teacher makes class fun and interesting. Very nice and willing to help you out. Test are right from what he teaches in lecture, pretty straight forward!
Dr. Magner is brilliant! He is always willing to help, he relates stories and concepts well with the material, and overall is a funny guy that really wants his students to succeed. I would definitely take him again!
Very hard to follow. He compared the inside of a cell to an "Indian water clock". Over half the class in Bio 1106 left.
Nice man. Very poor at helping/explaining.
Not very good at explaining, spent more time entertaining us. Although he was kinda funny he could have explained things a little better. I did however take another teacher for 2114 and they were who was much better.
Probably one of the most annoying professors I've ever had. Repeats his lectures word for word in lab, and has specific words he doesn't like that he expects you not to use. Very arrogant, but I nice guy outside of class. I would not vouch for him....
Magner is very knowledgeable, most of his lectures consisted of some medical story which was sort of interesting, and kind of all over the place with topics; all at once. His power points where really similar to the book but still useful. Still pretty good class.
Shawn Magner is an incredible teacher that really cares about his students. He will devote a lot of time in helping you learn the material if you come to his office hours. Amazing.
Its hard to keep him on topic and will often go off on tangents, but when he is talking about stuff pertinent to class it's extremely helpful. He's very clear and gives good explanations (you just have to sit through his anecdotes and bad puns). He takes a while to get through material but is thorough.
Several times I emailed him asking questions and he never responded; if you have a question you have to go to his office otherwise he won't get back to you. He gets off topic quite a bit and repeats himself. You have to study A LOT for this class but that's how it is whoever you take it with, they all give out the same exams. One examweek 20pts.
Shawn is a great Professor! He is such a nice guy. His lectures are sometimes rushed due to him going more into detail on certain topics and getting the class in on the discussion. If you take the time to study though, you will do just fine. Tests are difficult, but he seems very willing to give extra help though. I highly recommend him!
TAKE HIM FOR A&P! He is the only teacher that has 100% multiple choice on tests, all others have fill in the blank or essay questions. Tests are not difficult either, but you need to read the chapter. His lectures are usually fun, he adds humor where he can and lightens up boring stuff, really good teacher!
Shawn is a very good teacher. Exams are very, very tough, so show up to class and read the textbook material. He really cares about his students getting good grades. All exams are multiple choice which makes it a little easier. Cool guy, would take him again
Gives real world examples that help clarify concepts. Always available right after class to ask a quick question about the lecture. Will answer emails, very enthusiastic about material, not boring, offers extra credit opportunities if students are struggling, reeeally wants you to succeed in class, online hmwk is helpful, must read chapters in book
He is a pretty good instructor. But, there's exams almost every week in lab, also assigned reading is the textbook, take-home lab homework, pre-lab quizzes and online homework. He really wants you to succeed, but be ready to devote a lot of your time to his class.
You need to work for your grade, but he will sit down with you if you need clarification on a concept. Took him for 1106 and took again for A&PI
He can be very confusing at times. He assigns chapter quizzes as well as mastering bio. There are four exams and then a final. He is very lazy at assigning quizzes and putting grades on d2l which can get frustrating.
I knew what was expected of me and how to excel in the class. He always makes sure to thoroughly answer student's question which is good but sometimes gets us off track and we can lose lecture time which may cause him to zoom through the material. But I would highly recommend him.
He's just a great human being and actually cares about getting you an A. Best science teacher ever.
He is good at explaining things to beginners. I got 86 and 87% on his tests so far. He is clear expectation on tests and does not try to trick you. Tests from lecture slides. Tests and assignments all over the board, not good for a planner like me. Don't skip lecture. Too much detail in the book. He simplifies and clarifies what you need to know.
Shawn is very intelligent. However, it is hard to follow him. I had him for lab and he spent most of the time talking. It was pretty boring. Exams were pretty hard as well. He is a very nice guy though.
There were quite a few times that he said something was due one date but it was actually due an earlier date so the majority of the class missed it and he still gave everyone who missed it zeros. Doesn't care if his students do good or not. Not good at helping students who need it and ask for it. Gets off task very easy and is very unorganized.
He's a nice guy but a horrible teacher. Be ready to never know when the homework is open/due and ready to get lots of 0's because of it. He will tell you one thing and then do the complete opposite. He's very unorganized and get's off topic very easily. He goes through the notes very quickly and will often forget to post the notes on D2L.
He was okay. He's kinda really boring, and trips over the garbage can every 5 minutes. He is a really really tough grader and takes a while to grade. It took over a month to get papers back.
Shawn is a little goofy and a huge nerd but an awesome professor. He is always accessible outside of class and encourages you to come to him if you need help even if it not his office hours. He brings science to the real world and makes it relate-able. I have taken almost all my nursing science prereqs with him because he is so awesome!
Shawn is a nice man but he is sarcastic and treats his students as lazy cheaters. He knows the material but gets on a tangent and you may run out of lab time. He expects perfection on assignments and gives lab tests every week. I choose another school rather than take A&P II from him
Dry lectures, but he does take attendance so you need to show up to pass. Tests were not too difficult, follow the study guide he provides and you will do fine. Online homework through McGrawHill/Learnsmart. He kinda makes you feel bad in class and assumes everyone is cheating... not too approachable but overall decent professor.
professor magner is the hardest grader I have had to deal with. He doesn't give 100% on any assignment and he grades the lab reports very harshly. He is a great teacher but tends to over explain most things, and even though the class is 3 hours, he always goes over that. I'd reccomend him for lecture not lab
Shawn is tough, and the class itself is a lot of work, but it's not impossible. He can come off as arrogant at times, but he knows his stuff and is always willing to take the time to explain tough concepts. Lectures were good, but he tended to rush and keep us late constantly. Labs were tiring and not that worthwhile; I got more out of open lab.
Shawn is a fantastic professor for this course. The course is meant to be tough, and he does his best to make it accessible and manageable- and in my opinion succeeded. Sometimes his lectures didn't clearly hit the main points, but his study guides made it easy to prepare for the lecture exams. Lab also had clear expectations. Great test curves!
He is a good professor, he will always take the time to explain concepts that are difficult. Overall I enjoyed both lab and lecture. Theses classes are meant to be challenging, most of the students are going into the medical field.. dealing with people's lives, study and you will do good.
He is very good at lecturing and giving you the information you need. But he is VERY picky on how he grades and HOW he wants you to take a test. Spelling is huge to him. Don't let his tests throw you off.
Professor Shawn was very unorganized. He would say he put assignments/quizzes up for the students but they were never there. Class had to constantly remind him to also put up powerpoints on D2L. Gets a little carried away sometimes during lecture, but he tries his best. Just wish he would pay attention to what he provides for students.
Definitely one of the better professors I've had at AR. Shawn cares about his students and is thorough in explaining, though he occasionally tends to get sidetracked and is sometimes forgetful. This was my second class with Shawn and I will take him again
I strongly dislike science, so while the content of this class never genuinely interested me- I could still tell that Prof Magner was passionate about teaching this subject & a caring guy. While his tests are pretty brutal, he will answer all your questions & tries to help students with retaining information in fun ways. Hard class, but cool guy.
Magner is a good professor. I had him for lecture and even though his lectures were interesting he got carried away quite a bit. We were always behind lab. He relates science to everyday things , which helps. He puts power points up ahead of time. Tests were tough, make sure to read the questions carefully. I am definitely taking him for A&P.
Shawn is a great professor, if people complain, its probably because they didnt put enough effort into the class. While bio 1106 and 2113 are tough classes in general, Shawn does a great job at teaching. He wants his students to pass and will answer any questions you have! Just saying, people who fail, always blame another person. So take him!
Dr. Magner is THE BEST bio professor there is! I would highly, highly recommend taking his lecture for anyone who needs to take BIOL 1106. He is hilarious and teaches in a way that is memorable. 10/10 recommend. I would recommend reading the textbook before coming to class though. It helps a lot with learning and understanding the material.
Shawn knows his stuff but he is very unclear when it comes to assignments. His time management skills are horrible. If he cant cover the material in lecture because he ran out of time you have to learn the material on your own because it WILL be on the test. He always goes over time in lab and will start late.
I have taken Dr. Magner time and time again, for every class I've needed that he offers. I highly recommend him for labs and lectures. Dr. Magner is a professor who wants to see his students pass and succeed, and he himself is fascinated by the topics he teaches, making it seem easier to learn difficult topics.
I had Magner for Biol 1106, Biol 2113 lecture and Biol 2114 lecture and lab. Great professor! These classes are hard to begin with and you have to be willing to put in the work to get a good grade but I really enjoyed him as a professor. He is a funny guy in lecture. Be ready to read your book because he will run out of time to cover everything!!!
Shawn Magner is a very nice professor. I took him for biol1106 lab. He made lab fun and not so boring. His lab exams are a little difficult though. Overall good professor
good talker and explainer
He's very educated and knows what he is talking about, but would go a little too far with his examples and confuse me. I suppose Just not my style of teaching, but many of the students liked him. I also didn't have him for lab which made it more difficult to keep track of assignments. I recommend taking lab with the same lecture instructor.
Magner is a super passionate professor. I really appreciated this, but he does get carried away. He would often go on long explanations and not go over all of the information we needed to know. This resulted in a lot of reading. Going into his office hours really helped if I was every confused.
Magner is a good professor. Knowledgeable about what he teaches. If your class gets out at 12, he wont let you leave till 1215.
Gets off topic very easily. Tells too many stories and doesn't cover information well.
he had things that were in the grade book that he did not even give to us. Asked him about it and he said hes not going to worry about giving it to us.
I have never had a professor that has such a inability to keep to one train of thought. He uses the most ridiculous examples to try an explain concepts. He thinks he is more of a comedian, then a professor but he is not funny. On the bright side, he is passionate about bio. His exams are fair. But the only thing you will learn is from the textbook
He is the worst teacher ever. He goes off on a tangent. He doesnt even cover what will be on the tests in his lectures. His study guide doesnt even help you prepare for the tests. Theres no point going to class and if you dont go he wont mark your attendance.
He is a very nice guy, but he gets off topic very easily and talks way more then he needs to. We didn't have enough time to do most labs.
Make sure to take lots of notes, gives a lot of info during the class. Is hard to learn from since he gets off topic a lot. expect class to go late every time. He's very hard to contact, the best way is to go to his office hours otherwise you won't hear back from him.
Thinks he is a comedian and gets off topic very easily. Class felt rushed most of the time because he wastes so much time with useless examples. Very hard to reach unless you visit him during office hours. He is very passionate about bio though and if you study his review guides you should do fine.
Magner is very passionate about everything he teaches and he is very intelligent. Like others say, he gets carried away very easily. I have also taken A&P with him and just like 1106 we were behind in the syllabus most likely due to his ability to tell stories, some interesting and some not quite on topic. Not the worst professor.
He had good lectures. Most of what he talked about was helpful and usually on the test. Just beware that he thinks he's hilarious. There are usually weekly online assignments in Pearson(time consuming) and quizzes. I didn't know what my exact grade was for awhile and our class never found out what we got on our finals. Impossible to contact him.
Shawn is a good professor. His test are very difficult and a lot of the study guide isnt on the test. I know this course is suppose to be difficult but the tests were harder than usual. His lectures are not bad but they do take up the whole class period.
Over all, Magner is not the worst professor, but not the best. He is very passionate about what he teaches, but so much so that he very easily gets off track. We get behind in labs and he is very disorganized. One week had almost no homework. The next week, we had to cover material on 4 chapters, including mastering assignments and quizzes.
Confused how he's still even a professor? He literally takes the entire semester to grade anything or respond to a email. His lectures consist of tiring jokes. Don't worry you wont read the book you BOUGHT, you'll spend more time reading his NEVER ending power points. Mandatory attendance? Only on the days he can remembers to take it.
WORST professor I've EVER had. Not sure what he does when he's in his office because he doesn't respond to emails or grade anything on time? Be prepared to fall behind because he can't stay on track. All of the answers to the mastering biology homework is online.
He doesn't respond to emails and isn't an encouraging teacher. He tries to make things difficult for students. He acts like you shouldn't have a life outside of school. He'll waste your time telling the class the same story over and over instead of teaching but will still expect you to cram the work in later.
He overall was a good professor. But he got distracted easily while lecturing (especially during teaching new concepts). He makes you learn a lot which helped me later in 2114.
Magner is very enthusiastic about his subjects and knows his material well. However, he does have a tendency to go on tangents. This often left our class behind for labs which was frustrating since I had a different professor for lab. Lectures are important for understanding the material and tests so do not skip them. He is nerdy and entertaining.
I took this class online with 3 online lectures a week. There is a lot of textbook reading and studying! I would study for hours on top of hours and still fail the tests. Although there is extra credit its not all that helpful when you have failed all the tests. Oh he also is not the best when it comes to responding to emails or really anything.
If you studied the powerpoints that helped a lot on the tests. I am not the biggest fan of him because he would usually make more jokes than actually teach. But the powerpoints were always accessible outside of class, you could take notes on them, but when I took it we had like 6 tests which was a lot. Wasn't much work outside of studying for tests
Gets a little sidetracked with stories sometimes, but he's a good professor. Your raw exam score would usually go up by the end of the week because he would drop certain questions if he saw that most everyone got it wrong. He explained things well from what I remember.
He goes off on tangents which makes it very hard to follow along with the lectures he gives. He also has reading which takes hours as well as PowerPoints that last hours and are 40 slides long. The tests are difficult and he does not provide a lot of help. I got stuck with him again. Do not take his class if you can help it.
While his lectures are okay, the real important things are the powerpoints and the assigned readings. As stated before by other people, he does go off on side tangents sometimes. If you do decided to take Shawns class, make sure to listen to the powerpoints and don't think you won't need them because I thought the same and my grade really suffered.
I took his online A&P course which is a pretty difficult course to begin with, and his teaching style didn't help. His lectures were more like story times that weren't relevant to the subject we were learning about. On top of that, I had to ask questions a few times about assignments and such. I never once got a response back.
There were quite a few issues with staying on topic and he will hardly ever finish lecturing the PowerPoints he pre-records. You experience death-by-PowerPoint twice, although the pre-recorded ones are very helpful so listen to them carefully! He isn't the most respectful of time and will go over five minutes or more. Be consistent with questions.
VERY willing to help professor definitely worth the class if you really want to understand biology!
I personally never used the textbook past the first test. The power points are what matter. The textbook only gives extra info, it didn't help with much of anything. The presentations are what you should focus on! And begin to study each presentation after you finish it, otherwise, you will run out of time to study everything.
He was not helpful, and kept telling my class to watch recorded lectures in D2L that he hadn't posted. He wouldn't post them despite me emailing him, and then he lectured the class when everyone did bad on the test, that we weren't watching the lectures. I feel as if I wasn't given the material to do good in this course.
Takes 3 hours to explain 45 minutes worth of content, lots of wasted class time. Has no clear communication with the lecture side of the same class. You'll end up doing labs for content you've either covered in lecture a month ago, or have yet to cover.
This professor was not clear about the grading criteria of assignments and did not give us the proper materials to be able to pass his lab exams for Anatomy. I have talked to others who have taken his classes as well and they agree that he is not a good professor.
Great prof, that takes time to talk to students. Can explain everything done in class. I see a lot complaints about doing labs over things you learned before, but that's kind of the point. He usually does lab class for multiple lecture professors, so they couldn't always line up. Labs were available about a week in advance. 10/10 would take again.
He records the lectures through PowerPoint so you have to download them to listen. He never explained this to the class even after people asked him. Hes not great at responding to emails so if you are someone who emails the teacher a lot I wont recommend him. There is a lot of extra credit opportunities which was nice.
His style worked out really well for me. The lecture time was basically an hour three times a week where you could ask any questions, the actual material was in recorded power points, and the text used was informative. Make sure you do the homework from the book to understand the concepts from the class. Exams were taken during the lecture time.
prof. magner is very average. he can take a joke and is very understanding that biol 1106 isn't the most important thing in your life. knowledgeable in his field. he tends to ramble a lot about meaningless things, especially when the lab has numerous procedures. he seems aware of it and makes an effort (not successful) to tone it down.
his lectures are like story times, and after he proceeds to rush through the material. i had to learn almost everything outside of class. he sets the due dates wrong every week, requiring someone to speak up so he can move them to the correct date, but usually ends with him giving us an extra day to complete it. very understanding and nice.
He's got a great personality and I liked his way of doing things. But he talks a lot & repeats himself. Doesn't respond to emails well. Focus on Mastering & download PPTs, export the video, & 2x it. Go into open lab because in-class lab is basically 3hrs of talking & no hands on. Study using recall, it helps for tests. Really nice, helpful guy.
He explained well, but rambled quite a bit, leaving us with hw instead of class work. All of the lab work was simulations on the computer, no hands-on things. They take forever. Best thing to do is to open multiple windows, shrink them to fit on 1 pg, & rotate running through them. 4x as fast. Lots of group work. He's a nice guy and knowledgeable.
He is an excellent professor. He is very helpful to students. He is very understand. His lecture are amazing and he incorporated everyday experiences that helped with me with his exams. Read ahead and study his review sheets.
Doesn't respond to emails, doesn't make any accommodations for emergencies, takes forever to grade a test done on a bubble sheet. Very long and dry lectures, labs are just more lecture. Lab exam every week.
his lectures are more of storytimes than actual lecture. the classes are 50min long and he talks for 15 minutes before giving the exam and then kicks students out five minutes early. he blames his students when everyone does badly on exams. he skips over important stuff and talks about stuff that isn't important. uses a lot of metaphors.
I thought he was a good professor. He talked a lot during lab but I enjoyed listening to his stories. The only thing that drove me nuts is that he never ONCE answered one of my emails, which is frustrating when you only meet for lab once a week.
Pretty much unaccessible outside of class. Did not respond to any of my emails throughout the whole semester. He takes attendance half the time in lecture. I had him for both lab and lecture, lab was just more lecture. I did not find him to be engaging, it was hard to sit through his lectures.
He does not respond to emails and he is never in his office hours. Super unorganized and rude
He was overall a good professor. His lectures are either completely off topic or he just focuses on one small detail. He cares about you but he is not always in his office during office hours. All multiple choice tests. Overall, not a super hard class if you put in the work and listen to his pre recorded lectures.
If you need to take anatomy never take Dr. Magner, this guy literally talks about his college baseball career more than lecture material. If you have him as a teacher you will have to learn everything outside of class yourself, he does not respond to any emails, and do not even bother visiting him during office hours because he will not be there.
I had him for both lab & lecture, and he talks a ton. The way he teaches his course is very easy. I didn't read any of the textbook but watched his PowerPoint lessons and did coursework. His review sheets were great and were exactly what was on the multiple choice tests. He isn't accessible by email. If you can handle blabber, his class is great
Overall good professor if you can get over his side talks. His assignments and online quizzes are very easy; you can answer them without using the textbook if you payed attention to his lecture. He has very good PowerPoints that directly correlate to his in-person exams. Doesn't respond to emails, but is very lenient to assignment dates!
Dr. Magner is a nice professor overall even though I only had lab with him. Hard to reach outside of class, but during lab he is helpful and very open to questions. A bit talkative and goes off topic during lab so not a lot of time to work on the actual lab. Slow grader, and bad with technology, but accepts late assignments. Clear with grading.
Wanders off topic sometimes but his tests are straightforward. Pretty easy class if you study the information on the review sheet.
Took this class in spring 2024. Labs are easy but so so boring. He is unorganized, rambling about genuinely useless content making it harder to get the lab done. He thinks he is so so funny but is not at all, and just never shuts up about anything, and almost all of it is not relevant. I would watch modern family every lab and go for walks avoid it
Only 3 weeks in, and Prof. Magner does indeed wander off-topic A LOT. Always keeps us 5 minutes after class ends to stretch time. Other than that, he has very good lectures and everything seems pretty straightforward. I'll rate again near the end of the sem.
Why is he allowed to teach if all he does it waste students time during class lectures, he doesn't care whether you pass or fail. His anatomy exams are unrealistic, and I would avoid this teacher at all costs.
READ THE TEXTBOOK!! as a first semester PSEO student this was a great class, with simple concepts. you just need to red the textbook. if you get to know him and chat with him before or after class with any questions, he will help u and you'll learn he's really funny. great bio course!!!
He goes into a lot of detail and will talk about irrelevant topics, but he is a great teacher. Attendance is required, and it's just better to go so you can ask questions. He generally sticks to the syllabus but can deviate. I think that the online homework assignments are self explanatory with the animations and the lecture slides he posts.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Although he is nice and the exams are all multiple questions, he is not a good teacher. He gets off topic a lot and we've had to skip chapters because all he ever does is talk about unnecessary things during class. On top of that, people like to ask dumb questions and then he just rambles, which makes it worse. Im warning u!
Don't take. Always rambling about unnecessary things and pushes back assignments and tests because he can barely get through a lecture without having to go off-topic. Doesn't grade things at all, and not available even in his office during his office hrs. Does have good lectures, and has helpful resources for upcoming tests. Read the textbook too!!
I'm sitting in his class right now, and we have less than an hour left in his human anatomy lab, and all he does is talk and talk and talk. If you are looking to get out even 10 minutes earlier, don't ever expect that with him. He will speak so much that you have little time to complete the assignment he has assigned. He's friendly, though.
Prof. Magner can be chatty, but he's helpful during lab. Though he struggles with technology, he's understanding and accepts late work. For study prep, try Unstuck AI alongside the free textbook.
Dr. Shawn Magner is a good professor and explains his PowerPoints in depth. Although Dr. Magner ends class late every single lecture. He also switches up the definitions on his tests from the ones used in class or studied.
You can tell prof Magner is very passionate about what he teaches, but he does tend to go off topic in lecture. But he is very knowledgeable, and if you ask him something he will give you a very indepth response. 5 exams, last one is comp,17 lecture quizzes,15 hw assignments. This class is verrryyy heavy, it helps if you use yt+prof slides+textbook.
I recommend not taking this professor. We've had to skip several chapters and push back exams because he talks about things that don't relate to the lecture. He also never responds to emails.
He is off topic so much of the time that we are 3 weeks behind the syllabus. He is so unorganized that it took me until week 4 to get everything going that needed to be done. Still have a 0 because it wasn't opened. Good luck with emails to him. He.Will.Not.Respond. I have sent MULTIPLE emails (6+), and he has responded to 0.
He is clearly smart at what he teaches but always goes off topic and wastes time. Class almost always guaranteed to end late. Also spends too much time telling stories and retelling jokes.
He was a harsh grader. I had to withdraw his class because he would talk about his life in class instead of teaching and then we would have to learn the topic ourselves and even when you went to him for questions, he was not able to answer them in a way you could understand but made you even more confused. Would not recommend.
I took his class for a lab for biology class. He talks for majority of the class and then gives you not enough time to finish the lab. He also doesn't seem to respond to emails well. He's a funny guy and I liked talking to him, but with all these traits I listed, on top of grading everything last minute, I just wouldn't take him again.
Do NOT take this professor at all costs. If you are really in need of an A&P credit, go somewhere else. I truly do not know how he is still a professor. I can tell he means well, but he is super unorganized, had nothing ready for the first few WEEKS of class. He never responded to emails and is a certified YAPPER. No grades in until the last week.
He was behind, would rush us for his mistakes. Wouldn't post prelab in time, didn't have right materials. The work itself not bad if you study, but his mistakes impacted my grade. Lecture was difficult, study hard. Talks too much, expects you to know things he didn't cover. Not clear with assignments, need to listen & attend class. Very nice tho.
He's a great guy but very unorganized. He's about a month behind on grading and doesn't respond to emails, which makes it stressful not knowing your real grade. When you ask questions, he often talks over you or changes the topic. He means well but needs better communication and time management.
You can tell that he knows what he's talking about and is passionate about teaching but is disorganized, hard to reach, easily distracted, not the best with answering questions, and really hard to follow. I think a longer lecture would be better so there's more time for questions and such. I learned almost nothing in lecture and even less in lab.
As far as personality, he is funny and has good stories. But I think he is awfully unorganized. He gives good lectures. But when it comes to grades and forgiveness, he is not the best at it. I would take his class again though. Just to prove to myself that I can do it.
He's nice but he always gets so off topic during lectures, and then will breeze through the actual content at the end. Class also gets out late like almost every single day. He'll say "just two more minutes!" boy bye. He was also behind like the entire semester. Overall, I just feel I would've learned a lot better with a different professor.
The only good thing about this class is that the lecture exams were easy. Otherwise, all Shawn does is ramble, get off topic, and spread his political agenda. He means well, but I won't take another class from him.
-chatty but his stories help connect to the content! -takes attendance but doesn't affect grade -reopens missed assignments for students at the very end -read the textbook, do the lab manuals, and attend the lectures!
