Very liberal and bashes the government in his lectures. Drops alot of names while talking but then won't tell you who they are. Lots of notes and weekly tests. If you want to pass you HAVE to read the assingned reading. OK
His class is difficult and tests are really hard. I would suggest another teacher, but if you get him MAKE SURE to do the chapter reviews or your grade will suffer.
My favorite history teacher ever. I did not really like history before this professor. I like that this professor is not afraid to speak his opinion. If you do the work, you will pass. Weekly quizes are only 5 questions; and you read a chapter and summerize it.
Great professor! Of course you have to keep up with the assigned reading! Isnt that pretty much how it is in all classes? The outlines are simple once you get the hang of it, and he cuts people a lot of slack... He drops the worst 4 scores on your outlines and on your quizzes!
Caution...That is all I will say. Why is this guy even teaching at Butte?!
1 word: horrible
sean smith was an awesome history teacher!I never thought i would want to take a history class, and after his class i want to take another one, or so. this teacher encourages individual/critical thinking. You have to keep up with the work or you will be lost.
Wow. Hey all you critical thinkers. This class is for you. Shawn goes beyond the textbook History class and gives you something to relate to and think about. Take good notes, go to every class, and do your reading summaries--you'll be fine. This isn't high school anymore, boys and girls. He's a cool guy/loves what he does.
He is the best teacher I've ever had! Although quite difficult but its definitely worth it!
He is the most amazing teacher! I learned more from him than any other teacher. He is very insightful and extremely smart. I've never had a teacher that was so smart and willing to speak his mind. His tests are hard, but take his class becasue you will learn so much about history, yourself and the world you live in. Dont miss out on the class
I was sceptical at first, but I gave him a chane and I was glad I did. He will teach you things that you won't hear in any other class. A Little hard to keep up with up is a definite eye opener.
A little crazy but, if you want to learn about reality take this class. Shawn is sick, if you don't want to learn or can't seem to try in school don't take this class. He talks fast though so pay attention, constant note taking is necessary. Really listen to what he says though he is truly a reliable source of information.
Easily the best Prof I have ever had. His honesty and candor make him a pleasure to be around. He truly cares for each and every one of his students. TAKE HIS CLASS!
This instructor displays a high degree of paranoia and narcissistic personality disorder. Students not awed his monotonous political railings are subject to verbal abuse. A hurt little boy lies beneath his "I Am Truth" facade.
Sean is a great professor. This is the first time I have ever enjoyed history and he did a great job correlating the past with the present. Bottom line is this class is great if you actually want to learn something, show up and due the assignments and you will find yourself enjoying it. Yes, he is slightly cynical...but was a great teacher!
This guy made me want to go to class, where usually i skip out and twist a blunt. his style of teaching and the way he gets into things makes you want to learn more about history. i highly recommend taking any of his classes.granted he goes on rants but they are always interesting and entertaining,& hes been in punk bands since the 80s. down for it
This teacher is very nice and will listen to everyone. As for the material though, I was lost. I love history however keeping up with him in class seemed impossible. He is all over the place. And his use of words is not intended for the "general ed" student. We had only three grades the whole semester. Very Hard.
He is a horrible teacher, all he ever does is talk about how he hates Bush which has nothing to do with the course material. Even myself who dislikes Bush got annoyed with his political rants!!! He is a bad teacher!
Speaks with passion. Very intelligent and passionate on the subject.
Great teacher for both life and class... Grab coffee with him before u judge!
I took him twice in the same semester! he was a great teacher if you don't understand something ask... if u think he is 2 hard try more. people who fail or have a hard time in his class only have themselves to blame. he gives u everything u need to pass. Read the neg responses and throw them out the window. 3 Tests in 1 semester and thats ur grade
Shawn is a nice guy-funny,honest, etc. But he's useless. He misses class ALL THE TIME and doesn't just cancel-he sends some useless student to teach instead and holds you accountable for things some student teaches you. No chance boost your grade-everything is based on the 2 exams. His lectures are ALL OVER the place & he won't let you record him.
He's a good teacher with a good sense of humor. He often strays off subject, but always seems to eventually tie it back together with his original point.
Shawn is amazing.. the way he teaches, just so out there. all the knowledge he has and what he has been through. total intellectual with lots of years under his belt; knows his stuff. great personality and has some humor with him. makes u think on a totally diff level. ingnore everyone whos bashing on him on other comments. ull love him.
Shawn is AMAZING. I am surprised by the negative comments on here. I suppose this class is hard for some people to swallow. He corresponds history to today. He is incredibly smart and HONEST. If you want a class that makes you think and expands your horizons, this is the one. Be sure to do the assignments! Best history teacher EVER.
he is honest and entertaining, very straight forward. and he knows his stuff.
Shawn is funny, intelligent, experienced, and a cool guy once you know him better. I like him, except for the fact that I completely disagree with his ENTIRE political ideology and anti-"power dynamic" philosophy, no disrespect. 2 exams and video sumary guides are your grade. He loves his job, a truly brilliant mind, one of the best at butte.
legend. this man truely understands the world and the interconnectedness between all systems that enable us to exist how we do. strong vocab. if you listen, he will give you the tools for success. you just have to apply them. I have much respect for him due to his choice to share his understanding with mis guided perspectives.
A very good teacher, one of the best at the college. Sadly, he doesn't clearly give what he wants on his exams. This leads you to frantically going through all your class and book notes, not actually knowing what you need to study. I guess if you've a knack for good memory you can get by with an average grade; if that's no concern, take him!
Hist 12 & 14: he's all over the place. Drinks coffee and red bulls and then starts babbling about everything from politics to his motorcycle and his ex wife and once in a while he gets to history. The tests are HARD and you never have any idea what is on them.
Smith is a very good teacher that cares about his students. I am an A student but I wasn't able to fully grasp what he was talking about most of the time. It is not that he is hard to hear or the subject matter isn't relevant; instead, the subject matter is very deep and complex. His classes are designed to further ones education not transcript...
Nice guy & fun to talk too but as a teacher i would not recommend him. It is rare that history is even discussed, it is all conversations on his personal views on politics and how much education he has had. Tests are extremely hard & he grades very hard on the paper/midterm. Few understand his teaching and most stop coming to his class.
I have never seen a more obvious speed abuser than this guy. When he shows up, his lectures are all over the place, and he can barely put together a comprehensive sentence. From personal experience with this guy I noticed that his a violent obsessive megalomaniac. Steer clear at all costs.
I had a class with his brother at a different school. Its amazing that they are related. he is annoying and trys SO HARD to seem edgy and all-knowing that even if he does say something that was worth while, youd prolly miss it because its rare and youll be too distracted with his ridiculous spike bracelets and greasy hair.
I got to give it to him, he's really funny. But for most of the class, I had no clue what he was talking about...
Really nice guy and easy to talk to and get along with, but I wouldn't recommend him as a teacher because he talks so darn fast and half the time you don't know what he's talking about.
Greatest teacher I've ever had the privilege to learn from, he can totally change your view of the world if you give him a chance and let yourself be receptive to his message. I can see why some people might have issues with his teaching style though, its right up my alley, but i can see someone used to traditional teaching styles being irked by it
I already know the paradigm shift he teaches. However, I feel his focus in lecture is too much on that, and that does not correlate with what he expects you to know on the test. He credits that as our fault as students. Complains about salary. Asks us to write his test questions for extra credit. Would not recommend. Seems like a nice guy though.
The most interesting professor I've ever had! The first day of class, I considered dropping the course because I found it difficult to understand him, but I am so glad I didn't! Not only am I learning different things in his class, I also enjoy going. He really knows his stuff. To sum it up- passionate, intelligent, and funny!
If you want 9 hours of homework, and 3 hours of Reagan/Dubya bashing a week... TAKE THIS CLASS. Everything he says is somehow relatable to these 2 subjects. If you want to learn about ancient mesopotamia or other civilizations take some nerd who doesn't play bass in a band. This guy is insane. AVOID if you are not a sheep.
I didn't like him at first, but he grew on me. I definitely learned a lot...I would take another one of his classes again. He's a cool cat.
Shawn is truly an intelligent man that brought insight into many aspects of life and history. If you do not have a big vocabulary, don't take him because you will not understand. There was no homework. Only 2 test and a final term paper. That can be good or bad depending on the student. He is not afraid to express his opinions so don't be offended.
Great!
this guy is crazy. at first i didnt like him, but then he calmed down a bit. his classes are usually interesting. he is NOT hot. very misleading.
For being a GE class this guy takes it way too seriously. He says that you need to have your own perspective and own opinion and he can't tell you a right or wrong answer, but obviously there is a right or wrong answer because that is how the tests are graded. There is no text book to work from so you don't know how to study. TERRIBLE class!
Pretty scattered, not bad for just having a baby though. Couldn't really tell what was homework and what was EC. Extreme bias, but he warns you when somethings an opinion or "assessment" (fact). Although many facts are often left out. Very eye-opening though. You cannont enter this class if you have a closed mind. Recomended.
Great teacher. Especially for just having a baby.
Great teacher.
Shawn Smith is a great person! He is just very random, and goes on tangents with the slightest suggestion of something. For example, the first day of class, he instructed us on how to have a successful protest without the riot police interjecting. We didn't even start talking about the classwork until the end of the second week. On the flip side,
He is not a very good teacher, but he's a nice guy. I think he has had too many accidents in his life and too much going on. He rambles on, and doesn't talk about the subject directly. But push on through if it is past the drop date, it'll be fine.
Great Teacher! I will take hime again
Awesome teacher, definatly plan on taking him again. Hes very intelligent and will help you if you ask for it. & hes not big on homework or the textbook.
I took all three of his classes and learned all I needed to in the first. He teaches the same terms and has the same stories in all. Not saying they were bad, I was completely inspired and enlightened by his point of view and educated understanding of his subject. Limited work but the work you do COUNTS. Get your eyes open to the truth.
I do not like this class. I don't understand much in his class. He rambles on about stuff that does not relate to History. I know more about his life than I do about the class. He doesn't really explain very much. I was pretty disappointed..
In 71 units taken at butte, shawn smith is by far the worst instructor on campus. He's unorganized, unable to complete a coherent thought, and talks about everything BUT history. Avoid this fruit cake at all costs.
I received an A in his class, but was frustrated the entire semester. He doesn't return your papers so you have no idea how you are doing in the class. He rambles a lot and talks down to you. Also says he wants to help you but has NO office hours! If you go to class, hang in there through his rambling and do all the work, you will do fine.
Shawn is a pretty good professor. The class definitely requires commitment from the student to receive assignment clarity, but he is always willing to break everything down in class so everyone knows the deal. He can sometimes go off on tangents that don't relate, but is quick to check himself and get back on topic. Pretty good class!
This guy is super smart, but a horrible teacher. He’s disorganized, rambles in class, unclear on all assignments, and gives no feedback; at all. Nada, zilch. He gave most the class half credit on their portfolio but gave no explanation. Bottom line; smart, but a crazy person, and worst teacher in the cosmos, infinity, and beyond.
Could be interesting if he wasn't so arrogant. The class has no structure, all he does is talk about his opinion with zero facts. He is intelligent, but his attitude ruins his potential for being a good teacher. Vague assignments, very hard tests.
Took this class this semester of spring, and it was by far the hardest class I've taken, including Chemistry and Calculus! As you can see, it's a ridiculous class. He's a very nice guy and all but his teaching skills need work. He doesn't believe in notes and scatters everywhere with his lectures. I had to receive my FIRST W. Very upset.
Don't do it! The title of the class was "World History"...completely misleading. I have barely learned one thing about history. He rambles on and on about things that don't pertain to the class and is very unclear with the assignments. If you want to learn about history, go elsewhere. Horrible class I hate with a passion.
Shawn is funny, energetic, puts things into perspectives you might never have considered before, and offers a lot of fun and easy extra credit assignments. He teaches you how to find things easily in any textbook, and goes over anything you might have trouble with until you understand. AWESOME teacher.
Shawn is a brilliant teacher. Other posts may have been negative but I disagree. Grow up kids this is college.Show up to class, participate, do the assignments and youll do fine. I didnt do every assignment and did not get a perfect score on tests and still pulled an A. If your not will to do a reasonable amount of work for your grade, this not 4 u
SUCH A GREAT CLASS. If there are negative comments it is because they can't think critically. This class pushes you to think, and to actually learn. And yeah, you have to do your work but he's flexible with make up work if you talk to him. Sometimes my brain hurts (in a good way) when I leave this class.
He should be teaching grad school, not GE courses. He's too smart to relay his message properly to undergrads. Unless you are a walking dictionary you WILL have trouble comprehending anything he says. He knows his material but does go off on many tangents. I could never figure out when assignments were due even though I have never missed 1 class.
Learned more about his personal life and his tangential philosophies on everything from the evils of capitalism to the modern definition of feminism. If you are interested in this man's philosophy and being tested on lectures he never gave, since he was busy discussing our collective "loss of the second revolution", then by all means.
If your gonna take his class be sure that you can thin critically and that you can understand his weirdness cause if you cannot understand it like how i was you will probably drop the class or get an F
Did not cover the specified time of history. Speaks very quietly. Never went over syllabus or unique assignment requirements. Substitute for 3 weeks. the sub was baffled by how unorganized he was and by how little had been done the first half of semester. Smith believes himself to be a philosopher but he's not. DO NOT TAKE.
Great professor. Talks too much about his personal life though. Would rather be taught during that time learning.
He can't stay on track while teaching, which make his lectures hard to follow. He cancelled 4 classes & had a sub for a few more. Assignments were never clear and people would come to class not sure what to turn in. He gives full, 12 or no credit. Getting a response to an email was nearly non-existent I will make sure to never take him again
The class was very confusing and hard. Shawn went off on rants everyday, multiple times a day, making it hard to follow his lectures. Instructions were not very clear. Shawn Smith liked using strong vocabulary when speaking and giving instructions. Lectures were commonly a class length. I cannot recommend this class.
This was the most interesting history class I have taken. Prof. Smith is passionate about the subject and gives very interesting lectures. Be ready to take lots of notes, read the assign chapters and do reading explications, and write a paper after each documentary.
First I would like to state that this class isn't easy and it challenges you. If you want a good grade be prepared to put in the work. Every week consists of lecture or a documentary. He does write notes on the board but doesn't follow them. Be prepared to get off topic. Show up to class and do all assignments to get a good grade.
Needs to be more clear on grading criteria. To clarify, The grade you get at end of year is sum of all points earned through the entire year. For the DWS you need to do a DA as well, and with reading explications make sure to do them as you can use in the quizzes associated with them. Overall not bad, as he lets you make up work and is reasonable.
Grading isn't clear. It's difficult to determine your grade as the semester goes on because of his system. Feedback is pretty mediocre. It's easy to get him off track, which can be awesome but also very frustrating because the missed lectures or docs need to be done outside of class. Lots of extra credit, though!
Shawn's hella cool. I you are a history major, take one of his classes and let your mind expand. If you just want too float along and have lackluster commitment to part of your course load, this class is not for you. I've taken three of his classes and I realize that as long as you show up and contribute to his Socratic discussion, youll do great..
Shawn is rad. Take a course with him if you care about your education. Truly, Mr. Smith is one of my favorite professors. I especially look forward to coming to his classes. Some may complain about his assignments, but they're straightforward if you're at least moderately literate. Be prepared to work, but know that its worth it to learn from him.
After being in his History 8 class for 3 weeks this semester, I dropped immediately. Smith is very unclear on what he is asking from you in your assignments, he answers your questions with a question, and is extremely hard to follow. He believes he is teaching philosophy and not history. He acts too "sophisticated" for under grads.
Respect for his intelligence, but he's also pretty delusional. For most people, trying to follow what he says will be hard. If you are learned enough to do so, you'll immediately question why you're listening. He has a very well-formed world-view; it's just unfortunate that it has nothing to do with the class (and also that it's totally wrong.)
Shawn had amazing lectures, it was fun to listen to him especially when he was chill. I loved having his class but I did have a hard time keeping up with assignments. He was pretty easy going about allowing us to turn work in late as long as it was solid. I was fighting with time vs perfection on my papers. Grading was unclear but I still loved him
Shawn was an awesome Professor. He teaches you skills that will carry you through the rest of your college career. I often I regretted not making a vocabulary list with defined words that I would forget during lectures. Learn how to access the the unknown, and write your own questions for Chapter Readings and honestly you will kill it!
Frustrating class. Hard to understand lectures, you never know your grade. Even if you talk to him. I did every assignment came to every class and did a ton of extra credit because the fact that he was offering it made me nervous that we all needed it. All said and done I'm a straight student and received a C in his class. Didnt learn anything.
Let me say this is not an easy A class. If you want to float by pick someone else. I really enjoyed the class eve while hating history. He goes in depth and if you do not understand he is very willing to talk after class and explain until you can comprehend the context of the lecture. If you need extra time withassignments heunderstandslifehappens.
The best teacher I've ever had in my life. Encourages critical thinking and awareness. As long as you show up for class there is no reason why you shouldn't pass! As long as you keep open communication if you're struggling then he will work with you. One of the most thought provoking people I've ever met. Could lead a revolution!
Worst instructor I've ever had. Almost never gets back to you, unwilling to help when you ask, says he will get back to you but won't. Homework is very hard and doesn't follow curriculum. Don't take this class.
Okay. This guy puts lecture notes on the board, and then goes off on rants and tangents about personal opinions unrelated to his lecture. He never stays on track. Were 3 weeks behind and its March. He doesnt understand how to separate personal life and work. I havent learned an ounce of history and Im a 4.0 student. Do not recommend.
This guy gave homework that consisted of reading chapters then summarizing all the reading lengthy essay format which is basically mindless busy work that took hours. He just rambled on about his own personal interpretations of history and mod!ern life. I went on to get a math degree without him and a real teaching job. The P.A.W.N.S suck!!
Very hard to contact. Says he will post notes and help for tests, and doesn't do it. Homework is not bad, but you never know your grade because he neglects to put it in. My grade was not put in until the middle of the next semester (when I wasn't in the class anymore)! If you want to hear lectures that have nothing to do with the class, sign up.
Uses critical thinking, he doesn't ask you to memorize anything, just use common sense. If you don't attend class then you won't get the information on the board. The lectures are very easy to listen to, you won't get bored! Just pay attention and be able to relay that information for the quiz. Record if you need to, it might help.
People ream this professor 4 being "personal" & never teaching us "actual" history, but if you just show up to class & pay attention 2 his words it's EASY. He's a critical thinker & gives insight on history, but apparently if he doesn't just shut up & give you book work, kids don't know how to learn. Easy A if you just pay attention & do the D.W.'s
Really enjoyed US History with Professor Smith! You have to do the work of course to pass and the readings for the reading quizzes. His lectures will never be boring if you listen and take notes! He's very philosophical. I highly recommend getting permission to record his dialogue for study later on for exams. Would definitely take this class again
Tests and quizzes you can pass if you put yourself into his mind and how he speaks. Unreliable, he would promise to put lecture notes online since we were never able to finish them in class (he would talk about washing machines, hiding money, and more unrelated topics instead of getting trough lecture.) and than he would never post them. Avoid!!!
I will say Shawn is very polarizing, you love him or you don't. I will say this is easily one of the best classes I have ever taken. The classes Shawn teachers help you think critically and synthesize your own assessments. His assignments are designed around that rather than curriculum. He will continually talk about key points.
Horrible Professor!! Avoid taking him, he is very unorganized and doesn't post grades at all.
AVOID TAKING HIS CLASS!!!!!!
Shawn Smith wasnt the ideal professor. Often he would go on Tangents that would eventually take up the entire class time. I didnt learn very much due to his extraneous, never-ending lectures. We only have roughly 11 more classes and have not taken any exams, no grades have been entered, and we take self made quizzes. HIGHLY do not recommend.
Says hell upload lecture, never does. Says you can email and talk to him, never responds. I needed his class to get into another school and he didnt upload my grades in time, which was detrimental to my schooling and set me back. It made it so I had to pay more money and put my education on hold. Avoid at all costs.
Smith is easily one of the best professors at Butte College. However, if you just want an easy class that won't teach you anything, he is not your teacher. If you want to be challenged, inspired and are a responsible student, then this professor is right for you!
During Covid. Shawn started the year doing zoom lectures then transitioned to just uploading his own lecture notes for us to read, and then to not really lectuing at all... I thought overall he was pretty cool and i would take him again. He really does have a passion for history, even if he gets sidetracked. Definitely better than some techers.
If you want a professor that will cancel class last minute without saying anything, teach through videos, and is so easily distracted my his own lecture that he forgets to actually teach then Mr Smith is your guy.
Unless you really enjoy history I don't recommend taking him. I never understood what he was talking about in class and the assignments he had us do were ridiculous.
