Mr. Wood is the best math teacher I ever had. It's a challenging course and he focuses a lot on math theory - something I knew very little of. I wish my teachers in grade school taught this way.
Nice guy. Tricky tests. You think you did well and you don't end up doing as well
Hard class. Learned more in this class than all my other math clases combined. Mr Wood is a very good teacher.
if you want an easy A don't take this class. lots of homework and class activities. very helpful though! he knows his stuff.
I took Mr Woods 082 class and because I liked the computer part I tok his 121 internet class also. He is easy to work with. I finished teh class early.
actually if you do your work this class isn't that hard. i learned a lot. the teacher doesn't return homework righ away.
Helps with any question and explains so you understand. I hate math, he made it easier but have to have it.
Homework was pretty easy most of the time, he gives homework assignments straight out of the book. He did not give a studyguide for final, and tests were difficult at times he was very unclear of what would be on the tests as well. He does not take in late assignments either. This class was very fustrating at times, and his grading is harsh.
Internet classes require discipline, which I have. I made straight A's on my homework, but found that Mr. Woods tests were impossible. They don't relate very much to all of the homework that I did. Be prepared for those very tricky tests!
Makes math clear to me when other teachers made it seem like Russian. Very helpful.
he's not a weard math geek. this is actually my 2nd time taking this class and im doing much better. good teacher.
Homework-30%. Tests-50%. Final-20%. Does not accept late homework although he's sometimes late in returning homework. Very thorough. Compared to other teachers I've had he's good. very understandable.
He teaches very well. Makes math easy to understand. He is able to take difficult concepts and bring it to a level that is logical. Home work was hard at times to keep up with for myself, but in general I did find that homework asignments very helpful. Mr. Wood is a great teacher. I would take his class again.
not a very lively class but very useful
This class goes fast. The lectures can get boring. He can be a bit confusing at times, but he will help you out of class. And if you do well on the home quizzes you will be able to pass the class. Good teacher overall
Take his online class with mymathlab. It's easy to do HW, you can redo problems, xtra practice questions tell you what you need to work on.Quizzes you can take more than once.At home tests are openbook.Write down hard ones, take it to the math ctr, ask them to do it:).The finals easy,no tricks, and you can use an index card with notes. My final: 98%!
Awesome teacher.I took 082 and he was a very down to earth man. I was not to clear on math going into the semester, but after his lectures and 1v1 I was right on track. Would definitely recommend
Don't expect an easy A with Mr. Wood but do expect a terrific teacher. If you're not prepared for a college class drop it this guy can make anyone understand math. He's a terrific teacher, and if he teaches any higher level math class I will choose his class in a heartbeat.
I came to this website looking for guidance on this teacher and found what was said to be misleading. Shawn is a fantastic teacher and a colourful character. If for one moment you ever think he is not getting the difficult concept down, RAISE YOUR HAND. He is very friendly, personal, and beyond all else extremely practical. Phenomenal.
I took Mr Woods class 2 years ago and am now doing my student teaching. The only reason I'm writing this is because everything he covers in that class is what we're teaching. The teacher I'm working with basically handed all the math stuff over to me to teach. Without that class I would be lost. I highly recommend Mr Woods class.
Fabulous teacher, was struggling with math and he helped me recognize everything in an instant. Passed with flying colors. Very positive teacher, and definitely knows his stuff. Highly recommended for any low level math class, haven't taken him for higher, so can't judge on high level classes yet, I assume he's great though.
I took his class in the 8 week online course. He required that you log in at least every 3 days, which is reasonable. You can redo homework and quizzes to infinity before the due date. He was very responsive with questions and took pictures of the work to show how he got the answer. The final wasn't a surprise if you reviewed the tests.
Explained EVERYTHING, extremely helpful, and super flexible, as long as you did your work and kept up to date on mymathlab you're fine. Definitely an awesome teacher if you're looking to learn.
I found Professor Wood to be an excellent teacher. The best thing about the class was how patient and helpful he was with the students in the class. He'll go out of his way to help a student succeed. If you're looking for a great math teacher, try Dr. Wood!
I really like Prof Wood. I took his online class. He was quick to answer my emails and was very encouraging. I choose him again if I could. You should if you can.
Prof. Wood is a fantastic teacher. Math was never my strongest subject, however, Prof. Wood explains both the "how" and the "why" behind what he is teaching with patience and clarity. His expectations were clear. Keep on the mymathlab homework and bring up any question you have. He flexible when work required that I miss class. Great teacher!
If I had to do over again I would not have taken this class online. Lot of material to cover. The teacher was good keeping us posted and answering questions.
I enjoyed taking this class professor did an excellent job giving examples and helping with any math problem at the same time was funny and one of the best professors I think.
Great math teacher and a very nice person. Teaches concepts differently, but in ways I understood better than the book. Homework is average for a math class and tests were simple compared to some of the homework problems. Kept attendance early on then stopped about half way through. Reviews before tests were very helpful. One of the better teachers
GREAT math teacher. Goofy but very clear on what he is teaching. Made math a little fun to take and I HATE math. He will take time to help you as long as you speak up and ask. If you struggle at all with math I highly recommend you take his class.
Great Math teacher! If you struggle a little bit in math then this is the teacher you want. Little goofy with some methods but broke down to crystal clear. Will take time to help you as long as you ask. HIGHLY recommend his math class.
I took the online class and Professor Wood was excellent in going the extra mile and even created a video review for each chapter and an hour long review with formulas that you needed to know on the final. Very helpful and responded to questions promptly. Definite recommendation if you struggle with math.
Best math teacher I've had.
he is a great teacher explained everything very well and jokes around in class to make it more fun, the tests are not hard and you have alot of chances to do homework. if you want a great professor for MAT150 take him
My math is not good and professor wood explained things so I could understand. The math lab at Mcc is very helpful.
I took the online class, and it was challenging but fair. Prof. Wood was very helpful and communicative. He provides reviews for tests that are very helpful. Be sure to take careful notes for this class. If you communicate with this teacher, he will help you. Very good class.
Took this teacher based entirely on ratemyprofessor. It was dead on. I knew I would like this class on the first day. Relief!!!
Such an awesome teacher! He is the nicest guy and is ALWAYS smiling. He's LDS... so that's cool
Responds to emails and he will work with you.
I really liked him and took the class based on this website review. He was very helpful and responsive. He does a midterm and a final. The midterm is on the 1st half of the class and the final was on the last half. Gave study guides. Totally recommend him.
Great instructor, he really is helpful. This class is online and it does require you to study but you have all the tools for it. What I liked was that Midterm was only about the first half of course and Final the other half. He gives study guides and they are what test will contain. Will recommend to anyone I got an A :)
Well his style of teaching didn't work in my favor, personally I think he talks to much of how you'll use this type of math after the class too much. Taught myself everything! If you struggle with math, move on to the next teacher, if you're good at Math, this is your teacher. Half the class passed half failed most of the tests
Prof. Wood is an excellent math instructor. He is very clear in his explainations of things and if you dont understand something, he'll try to explain it differently until you do. There is a good amount of HW but it's purely because he really wants you to understand the material that you went over in class.
Math has never been easy for me and I had to work up from 092. Mr Wood actually made it interesting and understandable. I would recommend him to anyone.
My first online math class. Midterm and final are taken in person. Tests are mailed in. Homework and quizzes are online. Teacher is very responsive, just have to email him.
Mr Wood is one of the best math teachers I ever had. If I had learned math in grade school the way he explains it I wouldn't have had such a painful experience.
Great course, and even better instructor. Encouraged me every step of the way. Provided quick response and helpful tools, especially when you ask for help. If I ever take a math course at MCC again, I would want to take one from him. If you are willing to put in the effort, there's no way you won't be successful with him.
Shawn rocked, took class online. His midterm and final were just like his test reviews. He even does a podcast on the final of him going through each problem. A lot of homework but you end up understanding the content because of it. He's also super nice (met him in person for the final).
Good guy not good teacher, can show up 5 10 mins late to class, will post hw days after he teaches a section so class gets behind, uses my math lab. Rarely will give practice tests, when he does its halfway thrown together, is not similar to actual test and no answer key to check your answers. He does not have his stuff together, unorganized.
He's super nice ,but his teaching style is very confusing if you don't understand college algebra. Gave out 3 study guides the whole semester and they didn't even look like the test. Homework is on mymath lab. Took attendance the first month then stopped.
Good instructor. He does test reviews online. Will work with you but there is a final exam on campus
Great Professor!! He truly cares about your success in the class. he opens up the class online about a week early so you can see if it is going to work for you, online isn't for everyone and he knows that. he goes the extra mile setting up online study sessions for the midterm and final. i have always struggled with math and this class was great!
The teacher was more than willing to correct/give credit for homework & test answers if they appeared to be wrong or incorrect. The teacher was very busy doesn't respond to emails quickly. Most of his tests are mail in, but the ones that are online he gives 3 chances. I wished he gave the correct answers to the mail in tests though. Overall great!
Shawn wood is a great guy! easy class.
Mr. Wood is a great teacher! If you want to actually learn i highly recommend him! Math is never an easy subject , but with this great teacher you'll overcome the obstacle.
Shawn is a great teacher. I dread Math classes and nearly gave up in this class but I stuck with it after talking with Mr. Wood and I ended up passing the class with a B. He truly cares about his students and I would highly recommend taking him! Even if you struggle and your grades aren't the best, stick with it and ask Mr. Wood for help!
He is very easy to work with. I had a few personal issues come up and he adjusted some deadlines.
Professor Wood is a nice guy! If you are naturally good at math, this class is for you. If you need a good explanation and good visual aids, this class is not for you. His lectures are confusing and he doesn't do a great job of explaining things. He hands out worksheets every class period and puts you into groups and expects you to know it.
I agree with the other comment. I had a few difficult personal issues come up this semester and Shawn was very understanding and willing to work with me. He does use MyMathLab which is not my favorite but it works.
This math class was the easiest math class I have ever taken. Shawn Wood is super understand and very nice. Not a lot of homework, tests are very easy.
Typical online class. Instructor is easy to work with. He let me take my final exam early.
Mr. wood a great teacher. he very helpful and he gives extra credit. I didn't study math since 2001 and I told to him about that, he anderstand and gives me many ways to do math problem.
Never took an online class where the teacher would face time. He also sent video replies to my math questions.
Good class. Mr Wood uses MML. He will also reply with his own videos and links to other resources.
My daughter and I took this class together. We are out of state and Mr Wood allowed us to take the midterm and final exam at the school near us. Very well organized class.
My mom and I took this class together. Mr Wood sent us reminders all the time. Never met him but he seems like a good teacher.
I'm just signing up for this class so I hope these reviews are accurate. This will be busy summer and I absolutely need this class. I contacted Mr Wood to see if there was any way I could start early so I could finish early and he said that would not be a problem. So far so good ...
I took his online MAT121 class. Homework assignments were on My Math Lab and it was never too much. For the midterm and final Mr. Wood gave us a study guide that was very similar to the tests. The chapter tests we would do at home and turn them in personally or via mail. Do the work and you'll pass.
Highly recommended. Mr. Wood is engaging and clear when teaching math. If you are struggling to understand something, he will slow down and explain it again. He will NOT make you feel stupid for asking questions. For this class we used MyMathLab for homework, which gives immediate feedback and unlimited chances until the deadline.
So glad I took his class! Mr. Wood is a very kind and down-to-earth guy. Not super quick to answer online messages, so ask him after class if you have trouble with the subject matter. He is eager to help! Lots of homework on MyMathLab, but you can keep retrying until you get 100 percent (until the deadline) so it helped keep my grade up.
Uses MyMathLab. Homework is a must. Likes to be visited on his office hours. Responds to emails 2 to 3 days. Quizzes are straightforward, you watch the instructional videos write down the answers, quizzes are fast and are 15 minutes long. Mail in test issued on Friday and due by Sunday. Three in-person exams. Please ask him for a study guide.
DO NOT MISS ANY HOMEWORK. Make sure you do the homework, tests are based on homework, not very difficult. He gave a study guide for the final and that was very helpful. Nice professor, responds to emails quickly.
Math is my worse subject, but the way Professor Wood teaches, made it less scary. He doesn't make you feel stupid for not knowing the answer nor is he condescending when he's trying to explain problems. He breaks everything down and even re-words things so that the class will better understand the work. Show up, and do the Alek. You will pass.
Prof. Wood is great. He'll answer any question you have and goes over everything in detail. Lots of homework and you need to make sure to stay on top of it to get a good grade. The tests are very closely related to the homework. The final is based on all the tests but just slightly different questions. He's a very straight forward professor.
Absolutely best teacher I have ever had!! I despise math and do not under stand it at all!! He made learning math easy he really broke it down to help you better understand!! Awesome teacher!!
Prof. Wood is a straight forward guy, his % for passing is very reasonable. The only thing that bothered me was how his test is pretty tough, other than that he is a reasonable teacher. Just make sure you stay up on the homework and study.
I took this for an online class. Coming to school is not required except for the midterm and final exam. Tests are paper and pencil except for first and last which are online. He was very good at working with me during a family emergency. I recommend him to anyone.
Took this class online during the summer, so there was a lot of work but that was expected for a summer class. But it was not so much that it was overwhelming. He was accessible when I encountered problems and made it surprisingly easy to learn math online.
What I liked most about this class was that all the assignments (including tests) were posted on day one. Assignments were every Wednesday and Sunday - easy to keep track of.
Prof. Wood is fantastic. He's very responsive and willing to work with you! Accepts late work for 1/2 credit. Uses MyMathLab exclusively. Usually responds to emails within 24 hours, and he's very patient walking you through problems you don't understand.
Very easy to follow lectures. Breaks material down, Barney-style. Confused? He'll work with you until you get it. Gives plenty of time for hw, offers help day before hw is due. Tests match material taught. Took PreCalc in HS, dropped after the first month (2 weeks this class). Week 3, I understood 100% what he was teaching. Caring, great professor.
He is nice. Homework everyday. Does test review for every test. I am really bad at math so at the beginning of the semester I did struggle a lot and had to teach myself a lot but later on I did adjust and my grade did raise but you do have to teach your self somethings here and there.
Prof. Wood is awesome. Do the assignments and tests in Mathlab you will pass. He requires you to do a follow along workbook with the lecture videos which are graded and cannot be made up. There is an in-person final. He provides a study guide that is very closely related. You must get at least a D on the final to pass the class.
Mr Wood is a great math teacher. Friendly and cares about his students. I only wish the reviews were a little better and that he wrote slightly larger during lectures. Other than that i hope i get to take him again someday!
Some things I really liked about his class: All of the assignments were made available on day 1. Online tutoring. Multiple attempts on homework and tests. Thorough review for the final exam. Teacher works with you if you have family or work issues.
Teaches math in a confusing way, he grades the exams really hard, always behind on grading, allows some students to hand in things late and others not.
He's friendly and respectful. He really works to create a relaxed environment in the classroom and gives a lot of welcoming space for questions. There is daily homework though, so do not take if you already have a busy schedule. It can be very exhausting
I was so nervous taking this class, at first I thought I was going to failed. I ended up receiving a B. All you have to do is the MathLab, watch each video and do each problem and you'll pass. He gives you a practice exam, study that exam and you'll do great on the exam.
This teacher is one of the best math teachers i have ever had. Makes understanding it very easy to do. He does not make you feel stupid when you ask questions and will often help until you understand. Gives a fair amount of homework but gives 2 or more days to work on it. As long as you pay attention in class, you will probably understand
Does not explain material, test review doesnt match, homework is entirely different, doesnt specify what was wrong on tests just marks it wrong, class is usually cut short instead of taking extra time to go over material, takes a week to grade tests, class average is sooo low. Do not take him seriously. Nice guy but I need a teacher.
I absolutely loved having him as a professor. He explains things clearly and genuinely wants to help you learn. He's also so kind and understanding. I really appreciated the fact that he gave assignments ahead of time.
Best math professor I have had! Professor Wood does provide a lot of homework in his pre-calc class, but his homework assignments prepare you well for the test. He gives you enough time to finish the homework as every homework is normally due two days after it is assigned. Always make sure to ask questions, as he answers them clearly.
I took his MAT182 class during a winter intersession. There was lots of work which was expected since a whole semester of work was in 28 days. Lecture videos were not him but were super helpful, homework and quizzes were very similar and you could do HW questions as many times as you want. Super nice guy and would recommend taking the winter class!
Great professor. I took his online course and as long as you watch the videos, fill out the study guides, and do the homework, you'll be fine. I'm not a huge math fan but he made it super easy to understand. Actually passed the final exam with a 100%.
Half the class was gone by the end of the semester. Wish I wouldve done the same. His reviews and notes dont match and its like two different materials. Please take someone else.
I love math and I am getting 100% on all the lessons. When I do the tests I fail them because the tests do not have the same equations and problems that I learned on the lessons. He takes at least three days to respond to emails and he doesn't teach anything. its all through a curriculum. He doesn't seem to want to help me when i need help.
Professor Wood is a solid choice. He is a bit old fashion and everything was turned in on paper which isnt a problem. He gives you 2-3 days to complete homework though you do want to stay on top of it as you will get homework everyday. He did well with the COVID transition, but I personally did not do well with the switch. Would take him again.
Professor Wood is very accommodating. Works well with students. Especially during Covid. Would definitely take him again.
Professor Wood subbed for our remote class this week. Very good use of technology and explained things clearly. Wish I took him.
Im not a good math student and went into this class thinking I wouldnt pass. Especially because its online. The class was well organized and professor wood was very helpful.
Very flexible during covid. Will work with you and gives credit for silly mistakes.
I took Trig with Prof. wood over winter intersession. It was an on your own time class. We had Math lab homework due every week and a practice test which looked exactly like the final, except he changed the numbers. Thats it! He also gave partial credit. Just do the homework and practice test! Guaranteed A
Prof Wood is very caring. He won't bug you but if it seems like you need help he'll reach out. He's very good about replying to messages and fixing things the system messes up. I was really surprised that I passed, the MathLab is a ton of work. Tells you exactly what's going to be used for the final, work ahead. (SU fast class). Wish I did inperson
I took this class and felt like a breeze for me. He knows what he is doing and knows how to go over the questions you have. If you could get him for your math professor I highly recommend it.
I took Professor Wood for trig online over winter session at MCC. I spent 5-6+ a day doing homework and reading slides and lectures. I am not that great at math but I still pulled off a B. I AM SO GLAD I TOOK HIM and will be taking him for pre calc and hopefully calc. He is the guy you want as a math professor.
Shawn is a wonderful professor and he is very fair. I took his Trigonometry class during the Winter Intersession semester -- it was A LOT of homework, but that's normal for math courses. The practice exams were extremely helpful. He allows 2 attempts to take each exam so that you can improve your grade. I would definitely recommend taking his class
I took professor wood last semester and he was great. If you need help he will make sure you understand the material. Wish I could have taken his pre calc class this semester but my other classes got in the way. Definitely take his class
I took his online class over the summer. I'm used to a heavy workload however his teaching style for online is: read the textbook and watch the video lecture (he does not record his own lectures, it's a different teacher and very brief). It's a lot to be desired. I would take him in person rather than online.
If you're smart enough to use ratemyproffesor, DO NOT take this class. Lectures are 3 to 5, 2 hours videos of monotone complicated math vocab. Everything graded is through online software. 2+ hours everyday(mon-sun) of work that is worth only 10 points. Software is crappy and most questions have 7-12 parts so if it says 39 questions, really is 234!
There's a lot of math jargon in his lectures/vids. Lectures & HW are daily. HW has 16 to 39 problems; each problem can have between 6 to 12 parts to it. Tests & Test Reviews are due weekly. He uses Pearson for his book & HW, not a fan. I prefer MOER. Tests are timed, so not enough to double check your work. Take him in person, or another section.
God himself crafted this professor in a heaven lab and shot him down to earth. Prof Shawn Wood is a God sent professor that teaches math like Bob Ross paints. He cares about the students, explains everything well, answers all questions, and is fair. YES, he has a bunch of homework, yes, its a hard class BUT he does everything he can to help. 5-star
Wood is great at explaining concepts and is approachable to ask questions. HW on Pearson is easy as long as you work on it early and not last minute. He gives study guides for every test, practice them over and over as the test is very similar!! Write down his notes and examples in class as he rarely posts his slides. Responds a lil late to emails.
Professor Wood is an amazing teacher! He truly cares about his students and will work with you on anything. The homework can be a little hard and time consuming on Pearson, but it prepares you for the exam. The exams are very simple and he is only looking to make sure you understand the basic concepts. Overall he is a great professor and funny too!
While the class work itself was tedious for the majority of the time, the professor himself is kind and very understanding. The class work is very similar to the exams, so as long as you study well and get the material, you'll do fine with his online class.
Professor Shawn Wood is a very good teacher, and he can help you solve a lot of difficult assignments. If you are a good math person then this class will suit you but if you don't then you will get tired of the amount of homework on his person, be sure you do it regularly.
His lectures kind of hard to understand or his way of teaching is a little bit confusing, sometimes he doesn't go deep enough. I found his class harder than it should be, the topics are actually easy but he makes it harder. Prepare your self for a lot of homeworks. But as a person he is a good guy.
Professor Wood's MAT151 class is a challenge, but he makes the material approachable. The lectures can be dense, but engaging with the textbook and using resources like Unstuck AI for study prep makes a big difference.
