he thinks he is superior over the students, and teaches the class as if we are all going on to be scientist..we have to take the class to move on we dont need him to make our lives at school a pure misery. He is degrading, and is lazy using the internet for all his quizes..
BOO! A very hard class. I agree he thinks that we all should think like him. Wants us to learn the same way...I think that he is into Biology to experiment on us!
Shawn is a great teacher. Yes, he is arrogant, but he knows his stuff, and he is so adorable. He makes sure you know your stuff, and he lets us run the class, ie. we go over what we need, and that is how he lectures!!! Yes, quizzes on the internet, but you get to drop 10 or more. He is real helpful, and funny, love his beard, and smile
This instructor expects you to teach yourself and he lets you run the class becuase he is to lazy to run it himself! He does everything on webct, he needs to give that a break! Do not take him if you want to pass the class!!!!
Yes, he's very into the little details about biology, but that isn't a good thing. You try watching his stupid videos on webct and then getting a measly C on a an exam. Not a good teacher.
he has a different style of teaching which is great for me but might not be for others. he makes you understand the material in easy everyday language and examples.
I am very disappointed at the other students posting here that dislike Shawn. I agree he is hard, and if you don't want to learn, then I can understand how that might affect your opinion. I however am thankful that he has made me work so hard. After talking to some functional retards with other professors, we are lucky to have had Shawn.
An exellent. He's very chasllenging but, makes himself so available for helping students. If you put in the time and effort you will be rewarded. I have a 98% in this class and put in about 25 hrs a week studying outside of class. learning so much. The best teacher i've had here!
Shawn is the best teacher I've ever had. In order to do well in his class you not only need to know the definitions for everything, but also the applications. He has certainly turned me into a critical thinker. Many of us take this class to go into the medical field, where we have to apply this knowledge of biology every day. Thank God for Shawn!!
Very knowledgeable professor. Tests are tough, but if you prepare (at leaset 2 study hours for every hour in class), you should do fine. Definately recommended.
Take shawn only if you have the extra time! He gives alot of details that sometimes throw you off. Alot of internet quizzes! Like I said only if you have the extra time and effort for this class. He is always willing to help though.
Shawn is a difficult teacher, but that is not why I did not enjoy his class. He did not explain any material. I felt as if I was teaching myself. When I approached him for help, he was not helpful and I felt intimidated.
Hard class, good professor. If you are having a hard time understanding the material go to his office hours. He is extremely helpful. Gives lots of extra credit which helps your grade a lot.
He really knows BIO! But if you're looking to just slide by, don't take him! He makes sure you know and can then re explain what he teaches! He's awesome, but very hard!
I would highly NOT recommend this instructor. Shawn is very confusing over the material he teaches than what is in the text. Tries to trick you on test. He does not answer e-mails. He is not a very understanding instructor. He makes you feel like you should allready know th material. Went for help (waste of time)
He is unresponsive and will not return e-mails. When asked for help, he replies he has "No time."
Wow - I have never had an experience like that before. I currently have a 4.0 GPA and take my studies very seriously. The material presented for the on-line course was overwhelming and he was unresponsive to questions. By far - the worst instruction experience I have ever had. Dropped the class to have time to dedicate to my other classes.
Not clear and does not stick to the grading, doesn't have time to spend with you, does not return grades back until the end of the term if that, does not return e-mails, very unorganized, I believe he took on too many classes this term
Students are not used to his way of teaching. He DOES return emails, & he encourages students to meet him in his office if they have questions or are unclear about things. The problem is that he is brilliant & students are often intimidated by him, don't ask questions, & don't go to his office. I am. He holds you accountable for your own education.
If you want to just slide by do not take Shawn. He knows his biology and this is a very hard class. Shawn expects you to know the material inside and out. Stay on top of all assignments, go in for help, and get into a study group.
Shawn definitely knows his material, but students are paying him to teach us, now for us to learn on our own. He NEVER taught us the material that was on the in-class quizzes. He did not ever reply to my emails and when I went to him for help, I felt belittled.
Excellent
He has a way of illustrating what he is lecturing on to where you will understand. Very smart in this field and knows exactly how to teach it. He wants you to understand what you are learning not just memorize it. He is very helpful when you do not understand something.
Shawn is a very intelligent person who covers every aspect of the material. DL is a honor code class & if u dont study and do ur work, than yes u will not pass. Just because he is very smart in his field doesnt mean he doesnt care or its his way or no way, it just depends on the individual. if ur not smart enough 2 study, ur not smart enough 2 pass
This instructor is condescending and rude. People say he is good, well obviously that is relative. He may infact understand microbiolgy, terrible teacher. He evidently prides himself on spelling and grammar, but his lecture notes are riddled with errors. Try someone else, who will treat you respectfully. He is not hard just arrogant
Gives credit for correcting tests afterword. Helpful. Not easy but you gotta work to earn whatever grade you get in his class. Would do anything to help you learn!!!!
Once you lost him there was not picking it back up. He could be very helpful depending on how you learn. I love taking notes it helps me and he said to NEVER take notes... weird for me at least.
Shawn is a great teacher. The best teachers are not those that spoon feed you material, they are the ones that require you learn it and know it inside and out. He has online videos lectures and class time is used 4 discussion. You're in college you need to read the material ahead of time and be prepared to ask questions. He is very available to you
Doesn't care about YOU! His class is a hybrid class! He expects you to spend your evenings going over his videos. Wouldn't recommended him to future students.
His online class is among the worst I've seen so far. Online should be an e-version of on-campus, this is NOT. Quizzes are every day of the week (Sunday-Sunday) and are graded on an out of 5 basis. Miss 1 and it's an auto B-! Only counts 80% total quizzes given but still WAY too many! It's INCREDIBLY time consuming! Only take this class BY ITSELF.
Shawn provides numerous outlets to help the student learn such as outlines, videos, and diagrams, however he fails to teach! He expects the students to be at his level, and if you ask a question be prepared to be made to feel like an idiot. He also seems incredibly bitter, if you are an independent learner you might be able to put up with him
This professor has made this class into a practical repeat of 1410. New material is only introduced once every two months. You won't learn anything from him, so don't take him!
Worst teacher I have had ever. He scream to me during class just because I went to get some materials needed for the lab and I don't know why that upset him. He will make you feel like a bad kid in kindergarten. Besides all he cares about is that you watch his videos and do powers of ten.
Worst Teacher EVER!!!!!!!
I agree with every student I took his lecture and lab and it sucked! You do feel like an idiot when you talk to him. I feel like he does not care for his students. Beware if you really insist on taking his class.
Took him for BIO 123 and 251 and think he's an excellent teacher. In order to pass his classes, you have to think critically and analytically. After taking his classes, I've received nothing less than an A in any other class I've taken since. Thanks Shawn for helping me become a critical thinker!
I often felt frustrated in his class. His exams consist of T/F, essay, illustration, and multiple/multiple choice. He is web enhanced and makes his students beg for points. He is disrespectful to his students and never returns graded work in a timely manner. If you think this is the instructor for you, be forewarned he is terrible!
a bit vain and proud. put my butt through the ringer and made some cry, but it was worth it. i learned more from him than i did from any educator. this guy really knows his stuff and dose his best to make sure you know it to. if your not serious don't waste his time!
Very knowledgeable. Dynamic lecturer. Highly advanced mutant. Cell/Molecular Biology is a fascinating but challenging subject. Shawn teaches it like it matters. If you can put in the effort, Shawn is one of the best instructors around. If you like to whine about how unreasonably difficult things are, he will give you lots of what you like!
Shawn does not intentionally make students feel stupid. He simply answers questions without saying things like, "good question". He expects you to be an adult. His tests are not hard one you get used to them, but they are really intimidating at first.
Shawn Wright is a difficult teacher indeed, but that isn't to say that he is bad! In fact, he is quite the opposite! He makes his course very interesting and shows enthusiasm in the subjects that he is teaching. I took him for 201, 202, and I will try to take him for another class if possible. My advice: if you really want to learn, Take Shawn!
very hard teacher expects alot from his stucents. If you do take his class and have a question you better ask it until the answer is crystal clear. He won't wait for you. Keep asking even if he makes you feel stupid, which willl happen after the second time you ask the question. Other students will have the same questions in mind but wont have the
great class.
Shawn is a bit rude at times, but it doesn't seem like he intends to. This is a very demanding class but if you basically attend class and do most of the reading you'll learn a lot. He has an interesting way of doing lecture which helps learn a lot. I would definately take him again.
If you think there are not outstanding teachers in a Community College, he is the ultimate proof you are wrong!!! Even when his class is so demanding, it's not hard, and actually you will end up desiring to assist every time, I'm not fooling you, he is great. And just for the record, eventually he is a helluva fun.
tough teacher but I learned a lot; just study what he tells you to study
I took the class online. He is extremely tardy in answering emails, answering posts on blackboard, or fixing any problems that may occur on the site. His email responses or blackboard responses - if he even answers, are short and vague. His lack of communication made this class a nightmare and I just gave up trying to get answers after a while.
Smart, knowledgeable, lots of work. Choose him if your interest is going to become a scientist or you are passionate about Biology. He is RUDE and he knows it but he doesn't care. Ye, he wants you to be an adult but he treats some of his students like a child by embarrasing them in front of the class. Choose the instructor according to your views.
A lot of work but he knows how to teach it. Took it online and learned a lot. Highly recommend this instructor.
You need to work for an A. He teaches it very well but he will make you work for it. excellent on-line class, I learned a lot. It is my interest.
Amazing professor. I went back and forth from hating his class and loving it (because of how hard it is). It is very difficult, but he is an outstanding professor (lecture was very good/interesting). He is an enthusiastic professor that really really knows his stuff. My favorite professor so far (and im at unm now). BUT BE PREPARED TO WORK HARD
He's a smart professor. But thats probably the only good thing about him. I took a lecture and lab with him and neither were supposed to be online but he does so many of his assignments online that it might as well be called one. He isn't nice to his students and has a ego too big for what he knows. I don't plan ever taking him again.
You may not appreciate him now, but the further down the road you go towards earning your degree- you will look back on Shawn's class with appreciation. There are so many gems he throws out about biology and life- some are bound to stick and make you a better student. Work hard- it's worth the trouble. Bio is a foundation- Shawn is excellent!
LOTS OF HW! Too much chaos with online work, but can be done if you are organized. Expects you to answer your own questions, can be helpful, depends on his mood. Can also be jerk. Be ready to work HARD! HOWEVER, You will learn A LOT.
An okay teacher, however I would not recommend taking him unless you don't work, or are taking other classes. The work load is ridiculous for a 201 class. I was scared to ask questions because he makes all questions sound stupid.
Insane amount of work. Several students often told me that they couldn't handle online homework. But the plus side IS the tons of work. For example: he gives around 40 quizzes, but only counts the best 20. Lots of work yes, but lots of chances to throw out bad grades.
Shawn is the worst professor I have ever encountered. It took me three weeks of emails and finally writing a formal complaint to the dean of students (and relaying that information to the dean of biology) before he emailed me back. He never responds to anything and he doesn't give enough time to take the million quizzes he gives for each chapter.
Shawn is awesome! He is challenging, but very fair. He gives a lot of quizzes and assignments, but only a fraction of them count for a grade. You can make mistakes on quizzes, exams, and other assignments, and that's okay. Only a certain percentage are counted...the highest ones. What I learned from Shawn is priceless. He is MIT or Caltech grade!
Shawn was a hard teacher, maybe a little intimidating at first , but toward the end I really felt like I learned a lot! He actually challenges students to work for their grade. And gives you plenty of opportunities to get a good grade. He is very intelligent and if you are taking micro to learn, I recommend him.
Loved the challenge and definitely respect him. He expects you to work but is completely accessible and gives many chances for bringing grades up, if needed.
Took this online; material wasn't especially hard, but he did NOT respond to emails. I was getting very frustrated with him and with the new Connect site we were using. When I finally went to see him in person, he couldn't have been nicer, but he shouldn't teach this online if he can't make himself available via email.
His class ive very difficult! You will learn so much and walk away very knowledgeable but you will never feel that way in class. No matter how much you study for quizzes it seems like you can never be right with him. He never answers a question clearly and makes you feel stupid when you do. Never explains what it is he wants.
Shawn is a good instructor. Had him for Microbiology lab. He can be a bit gruff, and you MUST be pro-active in his class; he will not spoon-feed you! You will learn a lot and an A is possible with some work and even less-than perfection. Keep getting in his face even if he makes you feel dumb. I recommend him if you want to learn.
I took him for Micro. He is very hard, but I still received a B. He gives sooo many opportunities for quizzes and only a fraction of them actually count. He never responds to emails so don't bother, but if you talk to him in person he is really nice, for the most part. Sometimes he has a tendancy to make you feel stupid. Learned a lot!!
Obscene amt of work. Learn tons? Yes, but, for 30 hours a week. Insane. I aced w/difficulty! The prof is not always clear (esp in lab!). True he gives ~ 50 quizes and you only need 20, but the quizes are nec. to study for exams, so there is no let up. No reco for sum.sess. Tardy returning grades so I was never sure how I doing for the next assignm.
I had Shawn for three semesters for three different courses. I enjoyed the ability to eff stuff up and not have it be detrimental to my grade- as long as I understood why I eff'd up. I really enjoyed talking with Shawn out of class in person. The quizzes don't take long (~5 mins each), so having so many isn't that bad.
Take him. That is all.
Not my learning style AT ALL. He focused SO much on the book and didn't really teach during lecture. He expected you to learn from your group in lab and didn't explain what to do. You never knew if anything was due and puts a billion quizzes, assignments, and reading materials online where there is no way everything can be done before class!
Learned ALOT. He can be intimidating and may give a lot of work but it is necessary to learn and apply the concepts. He will not spoon feed you, you must ask questions if ideas are not clear. His intense teaching style is necessary and will get you ready for the upper level biology classes. I strongly recommend him.
You want to really learn Biology, then take a class with him. It is a LOT of work but he has an outstanding method of helping you understand. He is great and his passion for Biology is the reason I want to teach Biology as well. Go Shawn!!!
I was so excited to take this course and wanted to learn but he blew it. Too much homework, videos, ppt, quizzes. etc. . He doesn't provide exam outlines. You have to memorize the entire book .He doesn't allow enough time for tests or quizzes. Learning should be fun. This is NOT.I am constantly studying & worrying about doing everything he wants.
Shawn is a great teacher who knows how to teach. He expects his students to work hard and at least read the chapters and come to class ready to discuss the topic with other students. The best part of this class are the test corrections, which saved my grade in the end, to be very honest.
Difficult. Too much work to even enjoy.
He's one of those teachers that seems to enjoy making the subject harder than it needs to be. Not straightforward at all.
Shawn has hostility issues. He often comes to class angry. He answers questions with a sarcastic, demeaning tone. Very difficult, won't cut you any slack. Anyone who says they like him probably has serious daddy issues.
Meh. I was so excited to learn Microbiology but this class was just too much. Billion quizzes, homeworks, and extra credit options, but the exams are hard and there's not enough time considering open answer questions. You can submit corrections for extra points though. He did reply to my emails and explained concerns about questions.
I enjoyed this class. He is very difficult though. He expects a lot from his students. He gives tons of handouts, practice exams, and pretty much lots of ways to keep your points high in his class. Just study and be motivated and you will do just fine.
You need to be committed to learning everything on your own for this class. He isn't very helpful or understanding. He usually took a few days to respond to emails and its a lot of work. about 15 HW assignments, 100 quizzes, 5 tests and a final and 5-6 reading assignments. If you have a busy lifestyle this instructor isnt for you.
Shawn's class is not easy. He is passionate about the subject, and wants you to be, too. He is not your typical CNM teacher... he expects you to work, and to fully understand the concepts. Can it be frustrating? Yes. Is he one of the best teachers I've had at CNM? Yes. You will learn a lot from him. Be ready to work.
Shawn is the best teacher I've had in my 125 credit hours. He is an excellent lecturer, and funny. Online HW gives ample opportunity to get good grades, but he expects a lot from his students. You MUST study and know the material to do well on his tests. Tests are long and tough! He lets you submit exam corrections for partial credit though.
I love bio but I'm sorry Shawn is not clear at all. His questions are like mazes. He can be condescending and he is intimidating. He makes you lose confidence in yourself. He says he wants you to explain things in "your own words" but if you do he marks you wrong unless you explain it in HIS words. Do not take him unless you want to get frustrated.
I'm a Junior and take most of my classes at UNM and Shawn has been the worst instructor I've had. He can be intimidating and makes you feel dumb. He knows how to lower your confidence. His tests make no sense. He makes the material harder to understand then necessary.
I thought Shawn was fair. He gave you a million quizzes to help boost your grade and old exams to prepare for his exams. Also group work. Even though his lectures are awful and he makes you feel like a dumb child I would take him again just because he gives you a lot of room to mess up. Also lets you correct exam mistakes for some credit back.
This professor is one of my favorites. He is tough, but fair. He's got so much knowledge in biology, and his love for the subject is captivating and addicting. If you are an "A" student who takes classes seriously and study, you will be able to make an A, but if you are a lazy one who skips class or one who is a procrastinator, you will suffer.
Horrible instructor. He doesn't teach, he gives you objectives to learn you have to go home and read the book if you don't have a question about the material he will not go over it. When you do have a question it is like a maze to get the answer out of him. He refuses to lecture and says to just watch his online videos. Needs to be replaced!!
Wouldnt recommend to my worst enemy. He enjoys making his students feel like idiots. He stood in front of the class during an exam having a conversation with another instructor with no consideration of how distracting it was. Not straight forward at all, sarcastic and makes it impossible to pass his class with an A
Do not take him you will drop or fail class or other classes because of this class. Tests are trick questions tutors didn't even know the answers. Spent countless hours still failed & was failing in other classes. Dropped in Ch.6 so glad I did worth losing my tuition $. Not approachable. Most students drop. You're confused everyday.
Shawn is an amazing teacher. He can really weed out the true Biology lovers from the people who think it is "an easy class." He is insightful towards opening your eyes toward your environment and his tests are to test your true knowledge of the subjects. He makes you think critically! Which is key toward pursuing a Biology degree.
I took Shawn for molecular biology and purposely took him again for genetics. Yes he is tough, but whatever you learn with him is easily transferable to long term memory which is a must if you're taking the MCAT. Yes too many quizzes and homeworks and group projects, but if I could get A in both his classes so could you. He will make you work hard
Terrible. Avoid at all costs. He expects you to teach yourself and whatever you don't understand ask questions and hope he will explain it cleArly. He doesn't consider the fact that his class is not your only class. Expects you to watch hours of his online videos although it's not an online class. Makes it nearly impossible to get an A
If you do the work, well a lot of work! then you will get a good grade, even though you didn't understand anything! I would recommend finding a more straightforward teacher if you can! good luck!
took him for 201, 202, and 204 and fell in love with the class. would definitely recommend him to anyone. yes he is a little intimidating, but its better to ask questions than to stay confused.
Shawn is a good professor. I took BIO 201 and 203 with him. he expects from his students to put effort in the class and those who put effort, get reward from him in a form of many opportunities to get a good grade. If you come prepared and study hard, then you can get an easy A.
Shawn's class was one of hardest classes I've ever taken. Expect A LOT of work. I'd suggest lightening up on your course load during the semester you take this class because it will take up a lot of your time. His exams are tricky but if you do bad there's always extra credit available. It is not impossible to get an A , though. Just study a lot.
analyzing concepts alot. group presentation. Participation matter got Reef polling quizzes. Exams were hard. Tricky test questions, not enough time to taking tests during class. It would be better to take tests outside of class for having sufficient time But It was impossible to get A out of class with extra credit offer.
Shawns class was terrible. His expectations for what can be accomplished are overblown. You would cover chapter 1 Monday and be expected to read and understand chapter 2 by wednesday. Everyone in my class has struggled horribly. This class was so unorganized and accelerated. Its not fair that he's the only teacher available. Seriously avoid him.
He knows the subject well but expects you to know it like the back of your hand. About 60 PGA of content a week and heavy testing. Also grades very heaving and critically .
Out of all of my classes this semester Shawn's was by far the hardest. Be prepared to read and take notes over a lot of material. Also, be sure to watch his video lectures before his actual lectures to help with the comprehension side of the class, and if you're going to his office hours, (which you should) always come prepared with questions.
I can see why students get frustrated with Shawn, but honestly, he's just the kind of teacher who loves what he teaches and expects the effort and the same amount of passion. Some people have a hard time being as excited about biology as Shawn so they just see this class as WORK, but what else would you expect in college? Just do the work. BE READY
It was a pretty difficult class. I would have recommended reading the entire textbook before class starts. He takes material from chapters well ahead of what you're on. Exams are difficult and vague in what he wants. It's almost impossible to focus on other classes or personal life with all the work he demands. Avoid at all costs!
Frankly, I'd describe Shawn as the mentality you should desire from a science professor. However, I find his online resources abstruse and the anticipation for lectures to be sufficient for all students is absurd. If he could fix his course in one way, then it'd be clarity in his online resources through simplifying them. Too much does too little.
Expects you to have mastered the material within days, but refuses to lecture half the semester. Hours worth of lecture videos and material to cover outside of class. Test questions are unclear, and all are trick questions. Seems to enjoy making students feel stupid rather than clearly answering questions. Rude and condescending.
"Survival of The Fittest" Is the best way to describe this class. The weak minded that cant handle constructive criticism should op out and find another professor. Shawn gives you every tool you need to succeed. It is up to you to utilize whats given to you. Want a good grade? You'll have to work for it. Thank you Shawn for inspiring me to learn.
Tons of material that he makes incredibly interesting, and cuts you no slack for not putting in the work required to get the grade you want. A lot of reading but it never feels forced. Online homework and group quizzes which are probably the most difficult part of the class. Be prepared for an awesome semester!
He doesn't lecture/teach and everything is done in groups. He expects you to learn as much as he has learned in over 25 years. Excessive amounts of homework directly from the book that don't get explained.
Terrible instructor. He doesn't do anything in labs but lecture, and in the lecture he goes off on tangents and is constantly berating students for asking questions, usually declaring "that's not important to know". Notes are not allowed. AVOID him if you can. He will teach you absolutely nothing except to doubt yourself.
Shawn will make you work hard, but you will learn and retain so much! He has a bit of an abrasive personality, but don't let that put you off. Exams will test your understanding, not just rote memory. There are many opportunities to improve your grade (exam corrections, dropped quizzes, etc). Come prepared to work and you will do well.
Professor Shawn is by far the toughest teacher I have had to learn with. It's not that he is a bad professor he just doesn't focus on what is supposed to be on exams. He doesn't even go off the textbook REQUIRED for the class in his lecture. He is very frustrating to have to deal with. USE THE PRACTICE EXAMS TO STUDY, that is the only way to pass.
Hated his teaching style. Thinks he is better than other professors because he doesn't write anything on the board or use powerpoints. Very hard to follow. Doesn't review for tests. Dropped him for a much better professor at a different campus. Avoid him if you're like me and writing things down helps you learn/remember!
You will get homework every single day.
This is one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. You get plenty of homework every night. Each class if you don't have a test then you have a quiz. He is available for office hours but isn't very direct or clear in what he expects.
Honestly his class is really tough/challenging, it's not something you can easily get an A in. He is a tough grader and sometimes comes off as mean but he will teach you and expect you to learn a lot. There is a lot of readings and homework. Definitely use all the resources he provides or you will not do well. He makes you work for your grade.
I was a bit intimidated by the guy at first. However, this changed a couple weeks into the class. This is NOT an easy class. He DOES NOT hold your hand through every little thing. You are expected to WORK for the grade that you want. I think his class really prepares you for the harder classes and he is a VERY knowledgable professor.
If you are willing to take the time to study and really learn the material, you will be fine. Here are some tips: 1. Have the textbook chapters read BEFORE class (questions on quizzes) 2. Sample tests are pretty similar to actual tests 3. Ask Questions because everyone is probably wondering the same thing 4. USE ALL materials he gives you
He's definitely isn't the first person I chose if I was given other options. I could not get used to his "teach yourself" or "hands off" approach. I felt it pointless coming to class since everything is pretty much online and in class was a q and a board, not a lecture. I only showed up for the quizzes everyday, but I eventually dropped.
Shawn is amazing!! I wish I could take every class from him. He wants you to learn outside class and then come and ask questions. Initially I hated the approach but once I got used to it I love it. I learn more with Shawn then any teacher I have ever had.
I admired his effort not interfering with our learning as students and figure out what works for us in this course and others but as a entry level course into the biology program, I believe more guidance is needed as far as holding students responsible for their learning. He does not always come off as approachable which is discouraging at times.
you cant ask to do anything wrong because he will call you out in front of the whole class. He gives quizzes every class and homework.
The most inconvenient of the online classes I've taken (not faulting for the webcam; that's fine). He might be better in person. Tests sometimes had confusing answers (5 instead of 5'). At least one assignment had confusing instructions; when it was brought up during a zoom meeting he seemed unaware of how his own assignment had been worded.
Shawn doesn't "teach", rather he gives you a 3 page outline of things you need to know from the (online) book. Then he expects you to "ask him questions" the next class hour, about the chapter. Nobody has questions because he doesn't teach anything! Thus he spends all class hour ranting about how nobody knows any of the material. Huh, I wonder why?
I am taking his class online and it has been such a struggle. I’ve emailed him about 20 times and he only responded to 2 emails at the first two weeks of class. Now he doesn’t even respond to any. I am emailing asking him for help and he doesn’t help. So if you have a question about an assignment don’t count on him he will NOT answer.
Difficult class!
This semester mostly all of his tests were take home or at least partially and all were open notes. The class requires a lot of self study in order to prepare for the tests and get everything done. This professor knows A LOT about biology and could answer any question. I highly recommend him. I learned a lot
Class expectations are very clear. Fairly self directed class with ample opportunity to ask questions. Extra materials are provided beyond the lab manual. Extra credit offered related to the material and helped to learn terms. Overall I found the class to be very well structured and communication from the instructor was regular and clear.
This class is not very descriptive. Shawn expects everyone to be able to learn based off the lab manual each week. However the lab manual does not do a job job of teaching all the information. When other students ask for help he acts like we're dumb for not understanding the material just from the lab manual. He does not teach just monitors.
He's sassy and will call you out but overall is a great professor. He makes you want to learn the material and makes little jokes to make the long labs manageable. The course itself is pretty self directed and as long as you follow his expectations of what is to be done each week its a very easy class
Shawn's lectures are great. No physical books (digital). Gives extra credit. responds to emails within 24 hours or a day after. Attending class is mandatory due to group assignments, quizzes, and exams. You need to read the textbook to understand the material. Explains concepts really well.
I took Professor Shawns BIOL1140 class as a prereq, I dropped the class due to his very harsh teaching style. If you do not understand the content, "That is on you". Be prepared to take weekly quizzes and have no help from him at all.
These reviews are not true in my opinion. Shawn is a great teacher! The instructions on how to do the lab are in the handbook. You have to carefully read every single step. He's probably bugged because we ask for help before reading instructions. You just need to read the chapter before coming into class.
He started the semester by telling my class that he was not going to enjoy our class simply because it was his last class. He expects you to already know the material. It was not a good class.
Truly a nice guy who cares about his students, but his manner is off-putting. I get the sense he's a little burned out, so sometimes I had to argue with him about a question because he didn't understand what I was asking and assumed I wasn't paying attention. Generally good, but have a thick skin when preparing to ask a question.
Lectures are informative, plenty of extra credit, you're encouraged to keep track of your own grades, which can be confusing, but he'll fill in the blanks if you lose track. Weekly quizzes reflect previous class material and upcoming lab. Be prepared to get harsh answers for questions but don't take it personally and you'll get the info you need.
