He is an awesome teacher and dancer! you do need to go to class but it is always fun. just make sure that he knows that you are there and he makes you present, i had an issue with that but it was taken care of.

Shay is an easygoing, fun teacher....he is one of the few in the dance department who understands that dancing should be about having fun...it's a great class, and as long as you put the effort in to learning the routines...you will do well

this class is definitely for beginners. it's such an easy class! he is a very fun teacher and the dancing is wonderful! he just sometimes takes too long on the warm-ups, but its still great. oh and the music he chooses is crazy!

easiest class of my life, and he just encorages people, even if they cant turn in a circle, he doesnt hold it against you. but he was awesome to learn from. hates having to grade you, so u have to write a paper, but the class was awesome!

Really fun class. He's really nice and helpful. You don't even have to dance well, just turn the right way with the right arm up. A few writing assignments, but really easy class. Oh, and he plays really interesting music...

really good class. he's very nice and funny. just two papers on tap and a dance performance @ school. highly recommended for an easy GE class. only catch: attendance is taken every day, so you MUST go if u want an A. only allowed two absences-any more and thats deduction from your grade

great class, warm up gets old, but the music is awesome. the 1st dance is the longest focused thing, after that one thing after another, 2 papers easy, stupid dance show (boring) and you make up your own dance with your own group. its fun to laugh at the people who think they are amazing. and the people who are not. mean but entertaining!

Great teacher...Extremely suggest taking...Dance is fun and good exercise.. Very nice and grades good if you try a lil...2 papers that are easy...final only requires a little bit of work..

Layman is a laid back teacher that really isn't too strict on the choreography. He won't criticize on how smoothly you can or can't dance. Other teachers, i believe, will require alot of written work but Layman only requires 1 or 2 papers in which you can easily BS and get 100% on it. Take him if you want an easy A.

I'm a guy, and this was the best class I have ever taken. He doesn't grade you on how good you are, just as long as you can do the right steps. A few papers which are easy, a dance midterm in which he choreographs, and then a final that you choreograph with a group. This class helps you break out of your shell. Great instructor and he's funny.

This was my fav. class this semester. Layman is such a chill dance teacher! You don't have to be good @ dancing, but show a little effort. This class is pretty active and you meet people so don't be shy! This class is awesome. I recommend it. Very chilllll.

Great teacher! No textook needed. Expect to dance almost everyday. Some films to watch in class and then write a review. Must attend dance concert and also write a review. Easiest class you can take at CSUF! He's really chill, all you have to do is come to class, dance, watch a few movies, and go to a dance concert and you're set. Easy A.

A nice and funny professor. If you are a very shy person, this class is a great way to get comfortable with yourself and other people. I vividly remember how anxious and nervous I was knowing that other people were staring at me when I danced, but I started to realize I should just have fun with it and stop worrying. Just "chillax" and have fun!

This guy was so much fun. He was funny and really interesting. You learn a whole bunch of dances and its fun. for final you have a final dance with a group and to turn in a paper on a movie. Note: do a whole page or he will cut you on points and attendance is suggested because if you miss a day you miss out on quite a few. Overall cool

He's really chill and laid back. He grades easily but he sets criterias you need to meet in order to get an A. You can't just dance off beat and expect to get an A. There's a midterm dance that he choreographs and a a final dance where you're put into groups and your group choreographs. You watch 2 movies & turn in 2 papers that are easy. Take him!

I really love this professor. His ecstatic nature truly was a day brightener. Sadly I am not sure but his wife had passed away when I was taking it. I know to post something like this might be embarrassing for him on a site like this. But my respect and admiration for him had to be expressed and I just really have to say show this man some love.

Awesome Professor! He is very funny, optimistic, and a really great guy. His class is very fun and gives you opportunities to dance with a significant other. ;) He is also always there help if you ever need it and he only require attendances for participation, 2 papers, and 1 final group project. Easy A if you do your best! I highly recommend him.

AWESOME TEACHER! He's super cool and is incredibly nice. The class is totally easy, you just have to show up and make it look like your trying. You will be soo lucky if you get him as a teacher because he has an amazing life story and is so encouraging to everybody and has the most astounding faith. This class was interesting in general and Shay made it even more so. He is an absolutely amazing professor very chill and honestly all you have to do is show him that you are trying to dance and be in class everyday, write two papers, dances- consist the midterm and final and you're guaranteed an A. Definitely would take this dance class again!

The only bad thing about this class would have to be that it can be a bit crowded depending on what class you have with him. Other than that there is no reason why you shouldnt take his class. :D

Amazing man! Great class and he was an amazing teacher too. Try not to be a cocky student with a dance background because he doesn't like that. I loved Jazz portion of class, really teaches well to students with no dance background. ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY, HE TAKES ATTENDANCE EVERY CLASS! Allows people to socialize and make friends.

Favorite class of the semester! His class was seriously the highlight of my day, and I always had so much fun whenever I went :) Really easy, you can be terrible at dancing but still pass this class with an A easily :) If there's anyone you want for dance, it's him!

LOVED THIS CLASS! Totally recommend to take it very easy and he has such a great personality. He's very enthusiastic about dance so he makes it enjoyable even if you have no experience. Only two short papers and attendance is HUGE portion of your grade so make sure to never miss. I made great friends in the class very cool class for freshmen!

Shay is super awesome. I came into that class not knowing how to dance AT ALL but it was still tons of fun. He is really funny and he knows that it's a beginning dance class so he's easy on grading. There's a choreographed midterm, two papers, and a final that you choreograph in groups (min. of one minute so it's easy). HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Make sure follow direction for the papers, I got a B for the class because I didnt follow direction on one of the papers. Attendance and try, you will get an A. It is a fun class.

You can tell he really loves dancing and teaching it. The class is pretty fun and it's not too difficult to learn how to dance since it's just a beginner's class. If you need help, just go up to him after class and he'll definitely help you. All you need to do to pass is to just show up, dance, and write 2 easy, short essays.

BEST TEACHER EVER. I'm the worst dancer ever and was nervous at first but I got an A in the class overall. There's a dance midterm(he teaches you this dance), then a group final(you make your own) there are a couple papers to right but they are not graded tough. On finals day do yourself a favor and stay for the video he puts on for the class.

I loved this class so much! 2 assigned dance papers were straightforward. The midterm dance is choreographed for you, but the final dance is entirely up to your dance group to create. Show up & show effort and you will pass. I looked forward to this class everyday. I met a lot of great people in this class and Shay was such a nice and chill guy!

I really enjoyed this class! Super easy and engaging. Theres a few papers that must be written--all analysis on other works. Pretty straight forward. The midterm was kind of nerve-wrecking just because it was something new, but super manageable. Final went smoother because it became a zone of comfort by the end.

Shay is an easy dance teacher! The class has a mid-term where we learn a jazz combo and perform it. We cover jazz, ballet, cha cha, and a little bit of ball room dancing. But we only get tested on jazz. The final is a group dance created by your group. We watch a two films and write a paper on one. Must see dance concert you will have a paper !

If you don't know how to dance, its OKAY. He is so helpful making sure you understand what to do. As long as you come and show you're trying, you will easily pass. Two movies, two short papers, a midterm you learn, and a group final where you come up with a dance. Very nice and sweet professor and cares about all his students.

LOVE his style of teaching. He does not expect too much from a beginner and as long as you show effort, it's a deal. A very easy class to pass. You do have to write essays but they're easy. He's also very observant (he even noticed a slight change in hair) and he encourages students to come to him for advice if things are getting hard.

Shay was SO great! He really makes an effort to get to know you and he is always willing to help, if needed. He is also an easy grader for both the dancing and the essays. Midterm seems hard at first, but you practice it so much it becomes second nature. Make friends in the class for the group final! Effort + Good Attendance A+

Shay really got me to love dance. He's a great teacher and I would love to take this class over again. The only negative thing I have to say about Shay is you really can't miss class. He allows two freebie absences but after that you get 5 point deductions for every class you miss. I ended up in the hospital and he would not accept my doctors note.

The class is super easy as long as you show up and try. The first section of the class is learning a midterm dance of dance and its pretty easy. Then theres 2 movies you write 1 essay on. Theres a group dance as a final and he grades it easy but it was the most annoying part of my semester having to deal with just a bad group :/, so choose wisely!

EASIEST CLASS EVER! Easy essays on a movie watched in class and dance production on campus ($10 tix), midterm is chores learned in class - EASY, final is being in a group and perform choreography. NO EXPERIENCE NEEDED! He's nice and easygoing. I would recommend 100% and try to take it later on since it's an easy A

Easiest class ever. I got a B because I missed over 10 classes. 2 video reports, one 1 minute and 45 minutes group dance, and a dance recital you need to go to and make a report on. 3 tardies equal one absent. Don't miss class!

If you're looking for something out of your comfort zone but still easy to do, DANCE 101 with Shay is the answer! The class was amazing, it made me feel much better of myself. I came into class timid and didn't know anyone. After taking the class,I met cool people and I feel more free. It's definitely a place of no judgement because we just Dance!

He's such a cool guy. Dancing was so much fun! Tap was a workout in the beginning of the semester but it got easier as it went on. I learned so much and now appreciate dance and it's beauty. It's an easy A and it's a fun class so I would take again. Attendance is mandatory! There is a midterm and final dance but it's not hard to learn.

Professor Shay is a great professor. He is very clear on what he wants from his students and is always helping his students. It's an easy A. Attendance is 225 points so, DON'T SKIP CLASS. You meet a lot of people and all you do is DANCE and DANCE! :,) HAVE FUN!!! 3

This class was lots of fun. He's very lenient on grading for the actual dance portion, but theres a couple of papers he assigned and he graded those quite hard. But, he does give very specific guidelines to what he wants out of the paper, so follow those and you will be fine! He is also a stickler on attendance. Overall, would recommend this class!

Its a Dance GE , super easy as long as you're willing to try! Have some fun in this class, use this time slot as a stress reliever. Take morning class so you're more alert for other classes. Do the instructor's dance for the midterm, then make your own group and choreo a dance for a final. Couple of papers here and there. Graded by effort!

Easy class for people that don't know how to dance but can be frustrating because he grades you on your steps. Two papers and two dance that will be graded on. Will work with a group (of choice) to create your own dance and perform it as the final.

As long as you try the dance and have a good attitude he'll give you a good grade, papers are graded very easy dont be lazy and write short no late papers permitted attendance is important effects grade if you miss 3x and will fall behind ask him to show you the moves if your struggling, his real life dance scenarios are hilarious!!

This class was so much fun I strongly recommend taking this class if you need more credits but not the stress. You have 2 papers 1 about a movie and 1 about the dance concert and a midterm dance. Your final is a group dance which is super fun! If you want to make friends and socialize this is the class to take! The dances you learn are super easy.

You will have a lot of fun in this class. Its very different from any class I have taken. You dont necessarily have to be a dance but it would help if youre not terrible. Probably one of the most fun classes I have taken.

I love Shay so much. There is one midterm performance, two two-page papers, and one final group performance. The midterm dance is graded individually, but you will performing with four other people at a time. You will be performing this twice on two separate days. It was an easy A but I regret not putting in my all.

Pretty easy and fun class. A couple easy and super short papers to write, a midterm where you just perform a dance he taught (in a group not alone), and a final where you create a dance to perform with a group. He allows two absent days without taking points away from attendance participation.

Professor Layman made the class so much more fun! He inspires us to actually want to show up to class and have fun rather than dreading it. He's one of those professors that will remember your face and say hi to you in the halls. He really cares about his students!

As a lifelong dancer, this class was so fun! It is not vigorous at all, just show up, try your best, and have fun! No experience is necessary, and even if you don't nail a move, he won't be hard on you. You learn basics from different styles of dance and it is all so fun! Don't let a lack of experience stop you!

LETS DANCE! Honestly, the greatest prof out there. He made dance class so fun and he likes to have students who are willing to TRY. Do not be nervous, we all dance a little funny but he's there to teach you the fundamentals. I really enjoyed learning a dance and the mid-term was GREAT. I got an A, and you must practice in your room LOL.

Prof Layman is amazing! Def 10/10 take his class if you are looking to take a dance 101 class, he was so kind and he made dancing very fun. Due to COVID19 my time in his class got cut short and he has been the only professor to email and check up on his students. Amazing professor and overall an easy class, especially if you have never danced.

He is a real good and easy dance professor. All you need to worry about is actually going to class, since he does take roll, and giving effort into the dances. He mainly looks for effort from the students. With that, only grades you for a midterm and final dance plus a paper. Super easy, I highly recommend !!

Amazing professor. Took this class during my senior spring semester as an elective, it was so fun and a great class to let loose. He cares about dance and it is very easy to do well in the class. Honestly, so sad the class was cut short.

Sadly quarantine mode happened ): His Final is recording yourself, dancing your own moves just show what you got so easy and fun. I definitely love his class. In-person you feel shy at first but it's always good to meet people for you can practice together.

You won't be graded on skills, only if your dance is on the count. He doesn't judge at all. There are two papers, but you don't have to be the greatest writer and you'll get an A+ on them. There's a group project, but you don't have to meet up. You and your group create a dance solo for everyone in the group. You write another paper.

Best professor for dance for those of you who have never danced professionally lol. We got separated into different groups where he gave our groups specific dates and when to meet. Being in the groups helped as he had less of us so we could really learn the steps. EASY grader as he clearly understands that this class is for BEGINNERS. Take him!

He is so sweet! But if you don't show up, you won't pass. I took him online and for the midterm you could pre record the dance which was SO nice. You don't have to be a pro dancer to pass. As long as you try you'll be fine.

He is a great professor and understands that dancing doesnt come easy for everyone. Since this is a 100 class his expectations arent too high. He was also very responsive to emails. I would definitely recommend him.

Fantastic professor! Super nice and understanding of everyone's different dance abilities. You learn one dance, 2 papers (super easy), and lastly a final group project. We met on zoom maybe 6 times in total. The zooms are mandatory. Just show up to class, try your best, and it's definitely an easy A. Would highly recommend taking from him!

Great dance teacher, perfect for beginning dancers. You will have two essays in this class, but they are very easy. As well as performing two dances for a grade, also very easy. As long as you show up to the classes and do the essays and dances you will get an easy A. Definitely recommend this class!

took this course online, hes a super cool teacher. we were graded on only 4 things; 2 papers (4 pages each but very easy to complete), a learned dance routine, and a group project. he splits his class in 3 groups so as one group learned a dance the other 2 groups would be working on the papers asynchronously. group project is coming up w own dance

Amazing professor! He really cares for his students and their overall well-being. This class made my life stress-free from other stressful classes. If you take this class, there are only a few weeks you attend instead of the entire semester. Attendance is not mandatory, but if you do not go, you will lose points. Group work and two short papers!

Love him!! Super easy!! I had to write two papers which were graded after 5 minutes with 100%. You only meet like 15 days out of the whole semester. Makes the dance super easy to learn even if you had little dance experience, if you have ever done a TikTok dance before youll be great.

I took this class online and it was easy and enjoyable! Two papers, one jazz dance, and a final project where you choreograph with a group. Attendance is graded, but we only met on Zoom on certain days. Prof. is nice and understandable of all dance skill levels. He also responds quickly to emails. Highly recommend!

My class was online and we only met 10 times because the class was so big we had to split into groups. The dances were challenging but super fun. He doesn't go fast but he isn't slow either went teaching moves. This was a fun class he was cool!

This class was the easiest class I've ever taken. There were only 3 papers (that are extremely easy to do) and 2 or 3 dances that you learn as a class. There was also a group project where you had to choreograph an 8 count and a half, but it's super straightforward. I got 100% with no prior dance experience. You only meet on zoom for a few days.

class was online and we only met around two weeks throughout the entire semester. grades you based off two essays (ballet & jazz), one dance you learn during class (jazz), and a group project in which you must choreograph a dance ... i'm prob the worst dancer ever but this class was easy

This class was fun and easy. We had two papers (Jazz & Ballet). One dance was taught in class and we had a group dance. We only met 6 times. Highly recommend taking notes of due dates.

He is great! I had so much fun in this class! We had 2 research papers but they were super easy. he does a great job at the dance combos and he is a great teacher. make sure you wear clothes you can move in and that you have easy shoes to slip on and off. Final is a group and I like how we have the freedom to do what we want. Take this class!

Easy class, was fun. Missing class = grade drops a lot + you'll be confused on dance routine. a few essays throughout the year, easy just long and tedious. Don't have late work, don't have missing assign., your grade will tank. Canvas grade is at N/A all year until the end. Says he doesn't "believe" in 100% so 100 on assign. is impossible. so dumb!

I love Shay!! He is so caring about his students and is very clear on what he wants and expects from each of his students. There are 2 papers, a group project, and a few dances. He teaches the dances slow and makes sure everyone understands before moving on. TAKE HIM I LOVE HIS CLASS!!

be sure to come to class bc there is choreography you will have to learn. important bc its your midterm + attendance grade. no dance experience needed. try your best and you will pass. two research papers, just write what you see. one final (group up with people and choreograph a dance). 10/10 recommend.

Layman is an amazing dance teacher, I would 100% recommend taking his class! A big part of your grade is attendance, but show up and make an effort you'll do good. He makes dancing very easy and learnable, even if you have dance experience this class was so fun! You write 2 easy papers, learn a midterm dance, and create you're own final dance.

I RECOMMEND TAKING HIM! Attendance is mandatory. There are research papers but it's very VERY simple. He teaches solo dances to partners but it's amazing. He's also fun and laid back. And there are only two finals, one is a solo dance and the final would be with a group of people. Overall, TAKE THIS CLASS!:)

Honestly this class is the easiest A ever and Professor is very very chill. Even if you're not good at dancing, he really doesn't care. As long as you participate. This is also a good class to make friends. I had a lot of fun and I wish class was longer so I could dance more. He grades the papers super lightly the dance grades are based off effort

Amazing teacher. He makes the class so fun for being a GE. You do have to write some essays related to dance but they are super easy. He made me enjoy this class and he was super understanding if late. But attendance is mandatory for his class because it is apart of your grade. Definitely take his class if you need to accomplish a GE.

This man was amazing to learn from. He always made the dances fun to learn and worked with you as much as you needed. There are a few video analysis papers but they are super easy to complete in a day or two. The final is super fun you get to pick your own group and make your own choreo. There is one EC opportunity at the end of the semester.

I had him online and had never taken a dance class before. I was a little intimidated of dance but he makes it accessible for everybody and was fun and easy

One of the easiest classes you'll ever take for a GE. Professor Shay's class consists of 2 research papers, & a final group project at the end of the semester which is really fun since you make it your own. Shay always knows how to captivate everyone's attention to teach each dance style with enthusiasm and makes class fun overall! :)

Easy to follow and funny! Mid-term is a dance that you perform in class in groups of five. Two papers and during the time of doing papers, you don't have to attend since you can submit it to him or oral report in class. Final is a dance group (6-8 people) and you have to choreograph and perform in class.

As someone who never liked dancing, Professor Layman changed that! 2 research papers (really easy A) and a final dance that you make with a group. TAKE HIM TO CLEAR THAT GE!!

This class is one of the most relaxing class you would ever take as a fun elective. There are three research paper that are fairly easy . And there's 1 midterm where you have to remember a choreograph he created it “get ready and roll” is the song and the final is you forming a group creating a choreograph. Also attendance is mandatory.

Shay Layman is the funniest and easiest dance professor ever. There are 2 papers which are super easy and one midterm to a dance he choreographs. Our final is a dance that we have to create which is super easy and fun. 10/10 recommend.

super fun class! just be ready to attend class and write papers. he goes super slow when learning dances so its easy for new dancers to pick up the choreo!

Take this class to meet your GE requirement! Two easy papers, make sure to do on time as it can drop your grade, one group dance for the final, as long as you show up you do not have to be a good dancer, Mr. Shay is just looking for you to try. Overall, great teacher and great class!

It's exactly what you should expect from a dance 101 class. There was 2 written papers that he gives clear expectations on. There was also 2 dance performance projects, the midterm and the final. Overall, an easy and fun class, and great way to make friends with other students!

If you show up to class, you will pass. There was never a question as to what was expected in his class. The 2 papers are so easy, and this is coming from a non-writer. He literally does not care about the format. I took his class for an easy elective, and it was perfect for the senior in me who is ready to graduate.

Great professor, graded by few things but attendance is mandatory of course and if you miss several days it tanks your grade. Very easy g.e with a very nice professor, highly recommend

For DANC101, Professor Layman was straightforward and respectful, and overall a great teacher. In this course, PARTICIPATION matters!!! In fact, participation points count more towards your grade than the final project. In the class, expect 2 essays, 1 choreographed dance midterm, 1 group dance final, and 1 theater performance-watching assignment.
