Very easy teacher! A little bit crazy in the head, but tells really great stories. Loved this class. Only two test grades for whole class, so semi-hard. But tests are fairly easy. I'd recommend her for lab to anyone!
I LOVE this teacher! She is awesome I also had her for BIO lab as well! All you have to do is fill in the blanks for her power points. If you make the things on the study guide into questions to study you will get 100 or higher on her tests:)
hands-down my favorite teacher so far. she makes the class super interesting. she is very clear and goes in-depth on the material that is needed to know, and she is also very helpful. definitely a really good teacher!
One of the best Biology teachers on campus. You can tell she's passionate about subject. She is very fun teacher.
Fabbro was a fabulous teacher just following the powerpoints and study the study guides and you will do great in the class she keeps all the information very clear
If you are taking lab you HAVE to take this lady! You will not regret it.
Shay is an awesome teacher! She is very helpful, insightful, and crystal clear. I will try to get any class she teaches!!
Such a quirky lady, just love her! She is crystal clear, amazingly helpful, and funny as can be. Any class she teaches, I will take it!
She is incredible!! I would recommend her to anyone needing to take Biology. She is so enthusiastic about the subject matter. Her tests are extremely easy if you read her powerpoints. TAKE HER!!!!
I have never had a professor who made science so interesting. She is extremly easy to get along with and really cares for her student. She makes sure that you understand the material and has everything you need to succeed. Will bend over backwords to help you understand and ENJOY class. Tests are hard but her study guide gaurentees no suprises!
SHE'S AWESOME
Shay was amazing! her class was so easy and she lets you get a freebie on one test. I chose the final. Also her attendance helps you get a better grade. I had a 89.9 and couldve received an A but quit attending after the last test I took to focus on my other classes. I highly recommend her. I had her for the lecture.
Dr. West (last name was previously Fabbro) was an amazing teacher. Lectures and notes were very clear, and didn't need to use the book! She is very helpful if you have questions. She made anatomy/physiology extremely interesting while adding humor. Loved her class would totally recommend it!
Dr. West is an amazing professor. She explains everything in terms we all can understand and is always up for helping students willing to ask for help and work with her. Her enthusiasm in lectures and lab make it easy to pay attention and attend. attendance is not mandatory, however you get extra credit if you show up everyday and sign in.
The anatomy in 209 lab can be daunting, but West (her last name now) is amazing pointing everything out, and sometimes giving you silly ways to remember things. I did have to put in quite a study session before tests, but with the effort it is an easy A. She makes it a fun class, especially given the material.
Dr. West is great. She is very personable, her lectures are to the point but interesting. Assessments are directly related to in class material.
Shay is FANTASTIC and extremely knowledgeable professor! She is very understanding and very helpful when you need help. If you don't go to class, you will miss a lot of info during lectures! Her classes are difficult but it's not a reflection of the professor per say, it is a tough class and you have to put in the work!!
Dr. West is a an ok teacher. The class is pure memorization and there only four tests in this class which makes up your entire grade. I pretty much studied entirely on my own as what I learned in class wasn't all that helpful. Dissecting cats was cool but I thought I signed up for human anatomy.
She is awesome! I loved her class and teaching style!
I was so scared to take her pharmacology class because I have never had her as a professor. I quickly learned she is awesome! She is very willing to help her students in anyway. Tests come right from the power points and study guide. If you do the study guide you will definitely do well on the tests.
I HATE SCIENCE but Dr. West made me want to change my major just so I could have her as a teacher. She is very helpful and she makes the labs fun.
ABSOLUTELY FREAKING LOVE HER!!!! Bio 101 course was way easier than expected just because of the way she teaches. She is so fun and you will laugh everyday. Plus, if you kick ass or even are okay with your grade after the first 3 tests you take, you don't need to come in for the last one! Do the study guide and it will be an easy A!
Professor West is so helpful and kind, she is passionate about what she teaches and wants to make sure the whole class learns what they need to, to pass the exams. The study guides she provides are phenomenal as well and contributed a lot to my success in that class
There's a reason everyone loves Shay. She's hilarious and makes learning fun. You can tell how passionate she is about her students and the material! I had her lab for 2 hours and didn't even mind going because of how awesome she is.
Shay is great! She really cares and wants you to learn! She is funny and can get a little off topic but she comes around full circle and makes class fun. She adds personal stories and stories she has heard to give it a personal touch. Not an easy class in general so don't take it if you are looking for an easy class.
Fantastic teacher and so funny in class. Makes learning the material easy and relates things to real world situations.
Excellent professor, she really cares about her students , she does do extra credit and a drop grade but she has no homework. Your grade will depend on tests, however if you learn what is on her study guide and in the power points you will do just fine and most likely get an A. You can get the book but you can get an A or B with attendance and P.P.
Loved West! This was my favorite class and West is my favorite teacher! She is hard/strict yes, but super knowledgeable and a GREAT teacher of hard concepts. If you study the material given and know everything on her handouts you will get an A. She says often how much she wants you to come to her office and get any help you need. Highly recommend.
If you have perfect attendance and need a little bump up to the next grade she will help you out. There are only 4 exams in lab 210 and lots of material (you don't get to drop a test) so study hard. They only have 60 questions so you can only miss a few. She provides hand outs that help with studying!
I heard great things about West. Even as far as people saying "West is the best". But perhaps that only applied in BIOL209. 210L was a different story. You had no idea what slides she was going to use on the tests which made the tests almost impossible.
She has great ways of explaining things in a dumbed down manner to be easily understandable. Study guides for tests were very straight forward.
Sadly my first professor for AP 2 lab got diagnosed with MS after the first exam, and professor West had to take over. She talks WAY too fast and her lectures are pointless to go to because she doesn't go in depth and rushes through each new topic. Meanwhile, her exams are very specific, and have things on them that she didn't teach. Hard grader.
She is so smart and knows what she is talking about. Her study guides are based directly off her power points as are the tests. Always available outside of class when needed and even will bump grades for those who actually put in the effort. Amazing teacher and very fair. Shay is BY FAR my (and very many others) favorite professor.
Though Dr. West's class is difficult, it is an upper division credit that will challenge you. She talks fast in during her lectures, but creates study guides that are based solely on her powerpoints and are exactly what you need to study for the test. It is a tough class, but as long as you stay caught up and consistently study, you will be fine.
Your entire grade is based on exams, but she drops your lowest score. She is high energy and very fun in class. If you study a little every day you will do just fine on the exams. Make sure to go to her office hours if you need extra help, she is very accessible
Maybe my expectations were too high, but I was SO disappointed w/ 210. Dr. West is fun, but she spends so much time on personal tangents that she rushes through material and explains things very superficially. We also ended class early literally every lecture so she could go to a gym class. Was not impressed and would never take her again.
Dr. West is amazing! This course is difficult, but definitely do-able if you put in time outside of lecture. The PowerPoints are all posted ahead of time. If you are deciding between in-person and online, you should know that in-person has 10 abstracts due and two major in-class paper discussions while the online version has much less.
Dr. West is such a kind person; she managed to know who I was even in a lecture hall packed with 60 people. She wants to help you, so, seek her out. She goes on little tangents here and there, so it is good to read the textbook just in case. Loved her so much taking her pharmacology class next semester.
Dr West is amazing! She has managed to know my name in a lecture hall of 60 plus people. She always responds immediately to any emails sent. Easy to talk to, she is really good at explaining difficult concepts. Love her!!
(Hybrid Lab) Dr. West uses YouTube videos to teach, but you MUST come to class. If you have any questions, just ask! She's always willing to help any student and answers every question. I would highly recommend the hybrid lab. I think it has what you really need and knocks it out in one day.
What a treat of a professor! She is hilarious, but her lectures are still on point. She is kind and courteous, willing to help in office hours and possibly the nicest professor I have ever had. A & P is fairly difficult if you don't have prior knowledge, but she explains things so effortlessly. Loved her class.
Test information can be taken directly from Power Points she uploads before the semester even starts. She goes super fast in class but provides in-depth study guides and relatable examples. You'll read a lot of scientific papers. Would recommend if you are a nursing student, but even if you're not, the content is super relevant in everyone's life.
I had Dr. West for A+P II Lecture and Lab. She is a good professor, but I was a little disappointed after reading all her reviews. She goes through material too fast and sometimes goes off on personal tangents. She does answer questions well. My main issue is she seemed to have a strong bias toward the girls in the class and talked about pageants.
She is awesome and super understanding just talk to her. 6 exams (the lowest score is dropped). Exams are easy if you study the study guide which is on D2L. She posts her power points. I used flashcards to study seemed to work well. Exams come up quickly so make sure to be studying.
Shay West is my absolute favorite professor at CMU! She is so intelligent about the courses she teaches & really want students to learn! If you study, it's an easy A
The professor is awesome, and you can tell she loves what she does. But, there are very few things that she grades you on, and the tests are extremely difficult. If you fail one thing, your grade is gonna go down in the gutter and it will not be easy to come back up for air.
West is a fantastic teacher! She is very passionate and explains things super well. She is easy to talk to, and she will like you if you work hard. This is a difficult class that is lecture and test heavy. It is helpful to make Quizlets and to take notes and listen to the lectures. Textbook is not necessary, just study well, and you will be good.
I absolutely love Dr. West. By far my favorite professor here at CMU! I switched my major in the middle of the semester and did not need BIOL210 anymore so I did the bare minimum to pass the class. You are only given 5 tests for the semester with no other points. She drops the lowest test score. If you take the time to study you will do great!!
Professor Shay West is my favorite professor I've ever taken. She moves very fast in lecture so be ready to relisten with her online lectures as well. She really inspired me to put in the work necessary to get the grade I wanted. If you study what she teaches and use the study guides, you will do well. There isn't anything not taught on the tests.
I had her for 210 lecture & lab & to say the least it did not go well. For lab she use different pictures in PowerPoints, textbook, examples, and then whole new pictures on tests so it makes it very hard to learn these pictures to ID. Then for lecture it was much harder than it needed to be for a prereq. I studied countless hrs & stIll did poorly
she was a nice lady but I did not like her teaching style
Dr. West is a great professor! You can tell that she really loves what she does. I took her Lab and Lecture class and they were both challenging and really made you work hard. She is always willing to help and makes her lectures interesting!
Just show up, fill out the lab book she gives you while she is explaining the anatomy. She's a really fun teacher. Theres a reason why her waitlists are always full, she's the best A and P professor at this school!
West is the best! Dr. West cares about her students and is very enthusiastic about her work. She moves pretty quickly through the materials, but if you take notes in your lab book you will be okay. She answers any questions you might have if you think you missed something. Study hard, ask questions, and you will pass this class!
Her lab class is impossible, she says just google it often. Her practice tests are nothing like the exams. The slides on her PowerPoint rarely ever show up on exams, sometimes things seem so foreign on her exams you wonder if you even reviewed at all I wish we had more lab professors to choose from, I have a feeling I'll have to repeat this class.
I loved Dr. West's class the whole semester up until the end. She is very passionate about anatomy and makes the lab very engaging, however she is not very understanding if something comes up in your personal life. Me and friends have taken her for separate classes and all had issues with her lack of understanding and quite frankly rudeness.
Dr. West is very passionate about her profession. She gives great ideas to remember things by and she is very humorous. She simplifies concepts a lot to make it easier. This class is only based on test grades, which can be tough, but she wants you to understand the material. She will work with you on things if you need help.
Dr West is a very caring professor. In her lab, she expects you to know a lot, but makes it clear what she wants you to know, and will explain in depth if you need it. She offers you 15 points of extra credit, which helps you out a lot. I would take her again in a heartbeat
Dr. West was a joy to have. I have struggled to get interested in biology for as long as I can remember but she made it enjoyable to learn about. The class is lecture heavy but as long as you take good notes and look at her provided study guides you should be able to pass the class with flying colors. Goes on tangents but they are interesting.
This professor is easy if you are ready to read material and answer questions that she herself cannot answer. Additionally, DO NOT believe her syllabus procedures. She does not follow them and refuses to take criticism on this. She accepts no late work- although this is not reflected in her syllabus.
Shay is one of my favorite professors of all time. She is so excited and enthusiastic when she teaches, which makes it more entertaining. Her study guides for test are laid out exactly. I asked her how to study and she said to make flashcards, I did this and did really well. I did spend a VERY long time studying for this class. She lectures SO FAST
This lab class is a lot harder than Anatomy 1, but Dr. West lays it out pretty well. The exams are projected on a screen and they are PowerPoints. She will point to something and ask to identify it. She tends to want functionality in the answer as well. It was hard, but if you study it is just fine. I loved her enthusiasm and love for the class!
Professor West is very understanding and willing to make it work for her students I would take any of her courses.
West is awesome. It is a hard class but she gives you what you need to succeed. LOTS OF STUDYING. If you ask her she will show you the best way to study and will answer all questions. Her exams are up on the board and she klicks through them all. She gives grades back quickly. Would totally recommend!
The class is only tests, as long as you study you are good to go.
From what I have heard Dr. West is probably the best teacher you can have for A&P 2. However, she was very hot and cold for me, would get upset when you question her, but will also talk your ear off. Her study guides are not accurate because she fails to update them. I studied so much for half of it to not be on the test. Annoying but passable.
She failed to update the study guide but said everything we needed to know was on it. Overall the class was fine. Normally she will only lecture for 20 minutes and then everyone will leave. She gets very defensive when you question her grading or during test...anything really and is condescending when you ask questions or pronounce something wrong
West was a great professor. She explains the information so well and really wants you to succeed in her class. She will give you different ways to study that also really help. This class is very difficult and has a lot of material to cover. But, if you need to take it, take it with this professor!
This is a hard class but if you take notes and put the effort in it is manageable. Shay West will help you if you come into office hours. She also drops your lowest test and offers extra credit which is soooo nice. I really enjoyed her and this class, highly recommend.
Clear in expectations, helpful syllabus, generous extra credit opportunities. Lecture heavy but hands out study guides which makes info more easily digestable. It is obvious she loves what she does and is easily available to ask any questions.
Dr. West is awesome. She cares so much about the students in her class, disputes misinformation, and is a very entertaining lecturer. The only grades are really the exams -- be sure to study and study well.
She's hilarious and makes a lecture that would be really dense easy to follow and fun. Your grade is entirely exam based with an optional cumulative final that can replace your lowest exam score if you want to take it. There was a generous 20pt EC paper that was pretty simple too. Loved her class, and would've loved taking 210 with her
Most of this class's grades are solely based on exam scores. Only two grades are inputted, and there is nothing to go with the exams. This class is very easy, but she tends to ramble on specific topics during the class period. The tests aren't strict, but they require a lot of studying to receive good grades.
Funny during her lectures but she jumps around and talks about topics that don't pertain to the content constantly. The exams aren't unreasonably difficult but they're hard. Study her slideshows until you really understand the content and you'll do well.
Dr. West is very passionate about what she teaches. She's a good human overall, I personally just didn't like her teaching style. I don't learn well with long PowerPoints, so I often found myself sort of teaching myself the material. Tests dictate your grade, but there is a big extra credit assignment that is helpful. Do your extra credit.
Dr. West is an amazing professor she is willing to work with you and allows you to take exams early during her office hours she will go into detail when you ask for clarification. she also offers extra credit and the final is optional. Your test are the only thing you will be graded on there is no homework.
Dr. West will teach you tricks for identifying the different parts of anatomy. She offers extra credit and an optional final exam
West is an amazing professor and as long as you go to lecture you will be fine, she offers office hours and different resources if you need them she also offers extra credit and your final is optional
Dr. West knows the information very well and is very passionate about the class. She talks a lot about things that are not on the slides and makes it hard to know what to study. The extra credit assignment bumps your grade up a lot. You can do well in your class you just really have to study.
Dr. West was an engaging professor that seemed to care that you did well in her class. The only difficult thing about this course was how much content we were going through. Not her fault, but be aware. She had an extra credit buffer at the end of the semester, but I encourage to study alot and ask her questions on the content you don't understand.
Dr. West is very smart and really knows her stuff. This class covers a lot of content though so she goes through material very quickly. Too fast to really take notes. It takes a lot of time outside of class to study, but her tests correlate with her lectures and slides. Extra credit paper that's worth 20 points. She's very nice and approachable!
West is a great professor! If you have a question, she has an answer. Review material before going to class, know vocabulary, and study consistently. I recommend taking notes on the PP on your table or by printing them before hand. No textbook needed.
The assignments are not too bad actually. However, if you copy even a single sentence from a study or whatever, she will give you a 0 on that assignment, so be careful. Also apparently if you don't put a fat ass arrow on where a term needs to be next to a picture, she will take off a lot of points.
This professor is very unprofessional. I had a misunderstand on one of the assignments and she didn't even bother to have a discussion with me in regards to it. She does not read the work you submit and if you have anything to say about it, she will not regard it. Not worth learning this information when someone like this runs the class.
Dr. West is a very good professor. I have taken this course before, I passed, however, I knew I could do better. She made me want to take BIO 210 with her (even though it is a 8 am, and with her it is worth it). She offers study guide worksheet that are the most helpful thing to me in any science course I have taken. She has fun stories as well.
Lab was decently hard, but just studying a ton helped me get As. Lecture is so much information on all the tests and the study guides basically say everything that she has on the powerpoints. Sometimes, she makes the tests harder if the material is easier, and vice versa. Kinda annoying, but hoping I can end with an A in both of them.
Anatomy II is a hard class, but Dr. West made it easy to learn and follow along. Show up to class because there are a lot of hints towards test questions, even in her personal stories. She has skeleton notes that mimic the test. Reptation is key for this class, so just be very intentional about studying. She was very easy to reach during office hrs
She does her best to make the material engaging. Her teaching style might not be suited for type-A individuals, some of what's on her exams are tidbits of info she just so happens to remember to mention that are NOT on slides. She's very nice and passionate about what she teaches, but MAKE SURE TO TAKE DETAILED NOTES & always come to class!
