Shayne's quirkiness and sense of humor makes the classroom atmosphere a positive one. My only critique thus far in the semester would be that he tends to teach fairly quickly. I'm sure much of this is attributed to the fact that this is a lower level course than what he usually teaches. very personable. take him. He's a great experience and fun
Great Teacher! He's willing to go over concepts and is patient as you learn the material. It's encouraging to have a math teacher that explains material without being condescending.
Shayne's personality made this class's atmosphere feel fun and enjoyable. His teaching skills in math are the best that I've seen at this school. His extra tidbits of information help make each lecture more memorable. You can feel his passion for teaching and you can feel the care he has for his students. Start homework early, he assigns a lot.
Shyne is the best math teacher I had in my life. I took the course MATH 0980 and I just registered for MATH 1010 in summer. So yes I will take him again. He's a great man, he really cares about his students and makes sure they are learning. There are lots of homework, however, it's not hard or heavy. Just make sure to do it before the due date.
Awesome professor, he is required to teach the state mandatory curriculum for the class but somehow made it engaging and fun. Lectures are not mandatory however if you have trouble learning math from videos online then go to class, he is happy to help you on an individual level if need be. A lot of homework but its all done online.
Shayne is my favorite math teacher at SLCC. MATH 1010 summer semester was non-mandatory attendance course. However, I attended every single class because the lectures were so informative and entertaining. I loved being his student; he cares about his students and makes sure every student do well in his class.
Nice, funny, and organized with his notes on the board. However, he would explain the material in extreme depth and then say, "But you don't need to know that." It was confusing to know which part you didn't need to know. He said that anything late would receive an 8/10 but when I turned my homework in he gave me a 7. If youre struggling BAD CHOICE
AMAZING PROFESSOR! Shayne is definitely the best (and only) math teacher that made me feel as if I was good at math! Homework is online, so attending the classes is always useful to actually get a full understanding of the material. Quizzes and tests after each module, but Shayne goes over everything with you to ensure that it makes sense.
Shayne is a real gem. He honestly really cares about his students understanding the math. He actually made me love math because he teaches it super well. I have never had a math teacher care so much about how well I comprehended the subject. He will help you with homework questions or any other questions you need.
Shayne was the best professor iv'e ever had. His lectures were a lot of fun. I actually looked forward to going to math class. If math isn't your thing, I suggest taking him. He made math easy to learn. He is a fair grader and his exam reviews are very similar to the exams. He cares about his students and goes out of his way to make sure you pass.
Vargo has been one of my favorite teachers Ive taken at SLCC. He truly cares for his students and their success. I would 100% take him again if I could.
Shayne is an incredible professor! Math is a very difficult topic for me but Shayne explained concepts clearer than I have ever experienced. I did homework in his office hours and he was always happy to help me with any questions. Although he has a profound knowledge of mathematics, he never made me feel stupid. Take his class, you won't regret it!
If you want to learn math, definitely take a math class with Shayne. He knows the subject like the back of his hand. There are a lot of tests but if you do the test reviews, you will be solid. The reviews are fairly similar to the test. Also, he does not throw curve ball questions on the test either. highly recommended.
I took a chance and it was worth. I have taken five math courses to get to this and with different great professors and not one were we laughing practically everyday. With Shayne, that was regular occurrence in my tough course which was Calculus III. He was very insightful and had lots cool stories to share while being still on top of the schedule.
Best math teacher I've had so far. Shayne was very good at helping his students pass his class with well prepared exercises and lectures. He was able to articulate and breakdown complicated processes, and subject matter into concepts, and methods that were easier, and more complete than the text Imho.
He is such a good professor! Highly recommended! He is always willing to help students learn.
Shayne gave the most well organized lectures. He thoroughly explained material and the class atmosphere was great. There is a decent amount of homework, but everything you work on builds off of the lectures, so attend class! There is a lot of material to cover, but he does it so well.
Doesn't just teach the requirements to a T, and really digs into the subject to help the students understand it conceptually to a deep level so the things we learn can be applied to many problems, not just the cookie-cutter kinds you might find in class.
By far one of the best teachers I have experienced, Shayne is able to connect with students during lectures creating a meaningful environment for students. He focuses on teaching concepts and techniques rather than having students regurgitate and repeat the material
He's the best math teacher I've ever had and helped me learn math right for the first time since my last class 15 years ago. Funny, caring, and enthusiastic about math. Would recommend.
Shayne was absolutely amazing! He is super helpful and encouraging teacher. You will not regret taking his class. I was nervous for Calculus, but Shayne made it an absolute breeze for me. He truly loves to teach and loves his students. He also admires students who do the extra work!
Shayne is one of the best teachers I've ever had. I've had him for 1010 and 1210. He takes time to make sure every student willing to ask questions understands the material without making them feel stupid. He's clear with his methods and explanations. He is down to earth. He is lenient with late work and grading. cares more about learning than grad
Professor Shayne Vargo is by far the best professor I have ever had. I took his Math1210 course Summer 2020 and he was absolutely stellar. He explains concepts thoroughly and wants students to succeed. Further, he expands beyond the simple "see this and do it" mindset and dives into why the math is how it is. Quirky, funny, and amazing prof! 10/10
Shayne is BY FAR the best math teacher I've ever had. He has such a fun and spunky personality. Every time I would go to class, I would learn something new. To be honest, I hated math before I took his class and it was super hard for me but now I can actually solve the problems and I have fun doing it! I absolutely loved his class and his teaching.
Shayne is honestly the best professor I've had at SLCC. The way he explains things makes so much sense and he is always is there to help whenever is needed. I would definitely recommend him!!
The best math professor ever! Shayne is such a great teacher and is really great at helping you understand things. He is hilarious and makes the lectures fun, while still being good enough to understand what is going on. Definitely recommend him to anyone who feels that math isn't their best subject, as he is really understanding with grading!
Shayne is the best professor I've ever had! I enjoyed every lecture. He explains math so well and overall just wants to see you succeed.
Shayne was excellent at ensuring that students didn't memorize concepts but that they learn their origin and their usefulness. This is the first class I've ever taken where the math actually made sense! My only issue was that he jumped right into matrices without giving a proper intro to basics or fundamentals, I still have no idea what happened.
Shayne was hands down my favorite professor. He's a fantastic teacher, explains very well, and grades very fair. Attendance wasn't "mandatory" but I'd suggest showing up because his teaching was essentially all you need to pass the class. Not only a great teacher, though, you know he really cares about each student and adds lots of personality
Easily the best professor I've ever had, Shayne goes above and beyond to make sure you learn, while also not being the typical professor with boring lectures. He's the best of the best.
He is probably one of the best professors I have had. He cares a lot about the material he is teaching and it shows. He is more than happy to explain concepts or ideas and genuinely cares that you understand the material. He is also hilarious and makes class a fun time without it being a drag. I looked forward to every lecture!
I was dreading taking any math class after almost failing in high school each semester. I took Shayne's class and he was so calm and caring. He really wants you to understand why in math and not just memorize problems. He was very easy to reach outside of the classroom. I would definitely recommend him if you are intimidated by math.
He is my favorite math teacher I have ever had. He is very helpful and explains the math in detail to help everyone understand. The online lectures were easy to follow and he gave us the template of notes before class for us to follow along. If you need any math courses I highly recommend taking Shayne's courses.
Professor Vargo strives to help his students answer any questions they have. Saying that, don't hesitate to ask or reach out. He responses to messages and emails with haste. Homework is review of lecture. Would recommend to future Math Students who are wanting to succeed.
Professor Vargo is the best math teacher I've ever had. The only thing he seems to be more passionate about than math is helping students understand and become passionate about math themselves! His lectures are very detailed and instructive without being overwhelming. He explains the reasons behind the math so you actually understand the material.
The return to the traditional classroom Shayne does not hesitate to inspire through the use of thoughtful lecture to have the students reflect and think about course material in a deeper level of understanding. Through the structure and schedule of the course he made it easier to comprehend between the switching topics. I recommend for any math!
Shayne is easily the best professor I've ever had. He knows how to explain difficult concepts so that anyone can understand them, and he is always available outside of class to help. He makes math an enjoyable subject, which is usually not the case for a lot of people. If you want the best professor, I highly recommend him.
Shayne is such a good instructor that I almost want to be a Math Major, just so I can keep taking his classes. Funny, understanding, and really has a passion for teaching - he takes one of the most hated subjects and makes it learnable, bearable, and borderline enjoyable. If you have the chance to take his class, don't hesitate just register.
Low hw funny guy lectures were entertaining but learned most stuff from youtube tests significantly harder than hw weird on partial credit will you get 9/10 credit for a 90% right answer or 1/10 you never know with the guy overall he'll make calc2 bearable, his humor isnt as funny when hes condescending Not sure if I'd retake prob best at slcc tho
Professor Vargo was great, he lectures very well from a variety of perspectives. Very receptive to questions. I disagree with the coward below me who said the exams were harder than the homework. The HW prepped me very well for exams. Overall Shayne is a great guy, and has a genuine passion for the math and helping his students. Highly recommended.
I was so scared to take my first math class because I thought I'd be bored out of my mind. I couldn't have been more wrong. Shayne is so funny and he's wonderful at teaching. It's so awesome to see a teacher who's actually passionate about their work. I love this guy so much I'm following him to a different campus for my next math class this sem.
Very smart. He knows his material very well but takes the time to answer all questions. Very clear in his lectures.
what to even say about this gem of a professor. He make his lectures fun, and interacts with the class. He cares about his student and their understanding of the concepts, and makes the math rather easy to learn.
Shayne is an amazing professor that cares about his students. He helps make sure you understand what is happening in the math problems. He is hilarious and brings great energy to the classroom. I definitely recommend taking one of his classes if you ever get the chance!
Shayne's love for math really shows, and he goes above and beyond for his students. Shayne is a rock star professor.
He loves teaching math and it shows. His lectures are clear. The class structure is forgiving. I've never had a teacher that made it so easy and enjoyable to learn. Do your homework, study for the tests and you'll love this class, despite it's difficulty.
I hate math but Shayne made it something that was bearable. I'm sad that I won't be able to take him for my future math classes. You do need to put in the work but he makes it an enjoyable experience. I would recommend this professor to anyone but especially to those who struggle with math.
Super quick to respond to emails, will take time to review anything you may struggle with (just ask), super friendly, funny, 10/10 would take again
Shayne is the best math professor. He is so funny and makes an effort to make sure youre engaged. Shayne actually cares about teaching us rather than getting through the whole material. He really takes his time to make sure we understand and he answers any questions we have with a smile on his face.
Shayne is the best professor I've ever had. He's funny, quick to answer emails, and intellectually stimulating. Taking his calc class made me appreciate math in a different way. He's the first teacher I've had that doesn't care for busy work; anything he assigns is because he truly feels it will be to our benefit. He's also a very forgiving grader.
Professor Vargo is the best math teacher I have ever had. Not only because he's a fantastic teacher, but also because you can tell that cares about his students and wants to see them do well. He is super hardworking and fun and makes class enjoyable for everyone. I would 100% recommend taking math from him, ESPECIALLY calculus!
If you struggle with math, this is the class for you! Shayne is so patient and his lectures are easy to understand. You get lots of practice with the material, and the amount of homework is very reasonable. I usually don't do well with math but I managed to get an A for this course! Would recommend, would take this professor's class again :D
Shayne is super caring and makes sure everyone in the class understands what is going on I would definitely take classes from him again!
Shayne is an excellent professor. He is extremely knowledgeable in math and can go in depth into any topic. He can teach difficult concepts simply, making them easier to grasp. To top it all off he is also hilarious! A really enjoyable person to be around and a great teacher as well. I wish I could take all my math classes with him!
If you are taking calculus I or above, TAKE HIS CLASS. I know I made a B+, but if I had put in just a little more focus, I would have gotten an A. His office door is open and is ready to help. He is a fair grader. He encouraged us to be curious about math. His own love for math has inspired me to look at it from a different perspective.
Very caring person by nature, understanding of people's lives, and does a fantastic job explaining materials. For sure will be taking his other classes.
Is passionate about math. Makes things easy to understand and is very approachable when it comes to questions.
hes ok.... My dad passed away and he was not flexible at all. IDK how I passed, I did not do anything.
He is the best professor I have ever had out of all 3 colleges I have attended. I have an entire Bachelor's degree, and his classes have been the absolute best out of all of them.
Shayne is an icon! He's super funny and makes math not boring. He's taken the time to get know his students and to know us by name. He explains how to do the math, but also why you did that way. It's one of the first times in math class (in a long time) that I didn't feel desperately confused.
Best teacher ever! He is so funny and we all got along in the class!!
Shayne may be the best professor I have had during my time in school. One of the only professors I can say that has actually made me reconsider my major (and made me realize how much I love math). Goes out of his way to help students learn the material, especially if you put in the effort. I would take Shayne for all of my math classes if I could.
Shayne is the best math teacher I've ever had. He is funny and you never feel stupid asking him to clarify something, whether it's about the calculus or more likely an algebra step you forgot or never learned. Excited to take Calc 2 from Shayne!
Shayne is the man! If you are not the best with math, take this guy! You'll thank me later, his lectures made so much sense and he was so accessible outside of class. Best math professor I've ever had. Math magician and always tries to make everything work for you.
I had Shayne as my professor from 1010-Calc 2. I literally built my semester schedules around this guy because of how outstanding of a professor he was. He is super goofy and loose in class but at the same time an awesome educator. If you have the chance to take Shayne at any level of math I could not recommend him more. THANK YOU SHAYNE!
He is an amazing teacher of mathematics. Shayne is very funny and cares about his students. He explains everything in a simple way, which helps students feel better with algebra.
He's just the best math professor I've ever had. I have always hated math because I couldn't pass the exams. He will not go off the math book instead he will provide his notes for the course that are 110% helpful. I've taken math with him up to 1050 and can't wait for the school to let him teach 1060. My advice: if you fear math, TAKE HIM
I never understood math I always hated math but after I started his class he made sure I left knowing the subject at hand he is hands down the best teacher I have ever had
Shayne is by far the best professor at SLCC, I have always struggled with math it (was) my worst subject. The way he teaches makes it so much easier to comprehend. He's a super understanding person, cares about all of his students, and is great to chat with. I took him for 3 courses. If that tells you how great he is. 1000% recommend!
I am a Shayne Vargo fan boy for sure. I had him for 3 different math classes, math 1050, 1060, 1210 and I felt that his teaching style clicked very well for me. He is very responsive and If you have a chance... I reccomend taking a math class from Vargo if you have a chance.
Absolutely stellar professor. He explains things very clearly, so if you struggle with math, he is an absolute must-take. Every class was a ton of fun because he creates a relaxing, fun atmosphere. Don't be afraid of asking questions, he will never make you feel stupid for asking a dumb question. I wish he could teach all of my math classes.
I enjoyed taking his class. He was really help. He explained everything well. If you focus in class, you will understand how to do your homework. If you are confused, he explains it to you. I had a problem on one of my homework, I asked him for help and he helped me understand the homework.
Best teacher i've had, his ability to simplify and teach calculus 1 has been a game changer. You should spend more time doing word problems as that will be a big thing on the final and we didn't go over alot of those in the exams or hw. Overall if you are bad at math this class will be your best option.
Shayne Vargo is the most intelligent and skilled professor of mathematics at the college. He puts in tremendous effort and loves his job and his students. He's not lazy, and will love grading your work, answering your questions, and helping you out anyway he can. I used to hate math, and was terrible at it. Shayne got me through it.
Shayne is great at giving math lectures. He can write on the board while looking at the class, talking, and leaning away from his writing so everyone can see. His tests were direct and not tricky. He would put a tricky question on them as extra credit. I would encourage class attendance as he gives better examples than the homework does.
He is easily distracted when you ask him about anything but somehow we stay mainly on topic
Really friendly and really easy to work with. He understands and enjoys the course material. He focuses teaching you to understand the material, not just memorize.
Shayne is an awesome professor and I would highly recommend taking any course with him. Attendance is not mandatory- all the assignments are online, but not the exams. Despite that, I strongly recommend that you attend every lecture because he explains the new very well. And he also tells a lot of fun and interesting stories!
This is a professor who actually cares. His lectures are super easy to understand and the course is set up to support your success as much as possible.
Shayne is an absolutely rad professor. It was my first time taking-- and fully completing with a passing grade-- a summer semester math course. It was tough stuff, but Shayne is very patient and willing to answer questions. He's very funny and entertaining and a great teacher overall which made learning to fast paced material easy!
The GOAT. The best professor I've had. He truly cares about you as a student and wants to see you succeed. The class isn't easy, so make sure you stay on top of it. He explains things in a very understandable way and even students who disliked math or struggled with it did very well in class. He's very approachable. I highly recommend him.
He's the best professor I've had for any subject. He's passionate about math and wants you to understand the material vs just passing the class. Although I struggled a bit with some of the topics, he was extremely helpful, and I managed an A-. With how great my experience was with his class; I rearranged my work schedule to take him for Calculus 2
He is AWESOME!! His lectures are always fun and entertaining and he always brings a good vibe. I totally recommend Shayne as a math professor because he will always be there to help. Thanks to him, I always look forward to math class!
Shayne is hands down the best professor I have had at SLCC. I had him for Calc 1 and I'm currently taking him for Calc 2. I really wish I could take him for Calc 3 as well. The class wasn't easy, but he's more than willing to help you as much as you need. I can't count how many emails I've sent him this semester.
I've had him in person for Math 0990, 1010, and 1050. he is by far the best math professor I've ever had. he wants you to do well. He is able to answer questions in a very timely manor. go to his office hours and use his notes in class. Overall I highly recommend him!.
Shayne was probably the absolute best math teacher I have ever had. His lectures were AMAZING!! He can get sidetracked sometimes and go on about his personal life (if your class is a talkative one), but he always gets back on track and gives the best lessons ever. I was never afraid to ask questions, and he always answered emails and questions.
The only reason I am passing math990 is because Shayne is amazing at what he does. Please take him if you want a professor who is helpful, cares about students and them passing, and hear funny stories throughout the semester. (Buy him an eraser or whiteboard markers, not for extra credit, but because the man deserves a gift every now and then) :)
Shayne deserves all the best things this world has to offer. He will be the best math teacher you ever had. I've already taken him for 2 semesters and will be taking him again next semester. Before taking his class, I doubted my ability to solve even elementary math problems. Now I have no doubts that I can make it through linear algebra.
Shane provides lecture notes more legible than the textbook. His profound understanding of math enables him to teach even the most complex concepts with clarity. I highly recommend him for all math classes at SLCC. The college is lucky to have someone of Shane's caliber whose exceptional knowledge and passion greatly enhance the learning experience
He is so fun and great to watch teach but he is very easy to get off track so make sure not to talk too much during the lessons as he will go on about his stories but they're still really fun. His coursework was easy to understand and the way he framed the lessons was awesome. I want to take his 1010 class so bad but it's always full.
Shayne is by far the best math teacher I've ever had. I've never gotten above a D in math, and am finishing with a B+. His deep understanding and knowledge of math is crazy and I'm happy I got to, and will continue to learn from him in 1050. Overall nice and caring human.
Super helpful whenever exams came up. He is always attentive, and you can tell he loves to teach. Going into Math1010 was scary, but Shayne made the material so easy to understand. Definitely recommend to anyone who's scared of math and anyone who loves math!
Professor Shayne is great at teaching math; he teaches us to understand and not just to memorize formulas. He can be very lenient and funny, besides teaching us math, he took the time to get to know us, and took the time in and outside of the classroom to help us, and was able to learn math better. I would recommend and definitely take him again.
Easily the best professor at SLCC. I had him for Calc 2, Calc 3, and part of Diff EQ/Linear Algebra. These are not easy subjects but Professor Vargo explains things clearly, knows how to perfectly navigate and answer student questions, and gives exceptional feedback on exams. I was waking up at 7 am excited to go to a math class, he's that good.
Shayne is amazing and the best math teacher ever. He is so helpful and wants you to do well. Best teacher you can have at SLCC take his class if you can. They are full for a reason not just because it's required.
