What to say? She is somewhat organized, generally late with the syllabus, but keeps somewhat to it once class gets rolling. She is great at listening to the ideas of others, and never says that your opinion is completely wrong--unless it is (kiddi

I like her alot, very nice and knows her stuff.
Kicks your butt with papers, but she's fun, lively, doesn't dictate her opinions to you, and very open to new ideas. After a semester of her class, papers will be a breaze.
she is a great literature teacher, open to ideas, picks good novels to read, a pretty easy grader on papers, definetely worth taking.
you have to agree with her, and everything is a symbol for sex. If you can handle that, go for it.
A lot of papers, but she is a great teacher.
Business writing with Mester isn't the easiest class by far, but I've got a GREAT resume now and really learned a lot.
And college is supposed to make you think for yourself? Not here. I loved reading until i took this class. Not the best choice of books. Writing the papers was easy, but she grades them based on what she thinks you should have gotten out of the text.
Great Professor! She is very open to new ideas, just as long as you can back it up. Also for exams, if you write down what she said about that particular work, then you will surely get an A.
Writing for Teachers, a lot of reading and writing a summary and response. There is something due every class. You have to interview 12 people about writing, and write a paper about it. I didn't get much out of it bc I have 4 other classes. But it's take it again. She's very nice, sorta a waste.
GOt out a lot from this class, great resume and business writing skills
I was excited about taking this class, and found it to be a disappointment. Only grades you well on your papers if your opinion agrees with hers. Isn't very approachable or friendly either. The class would be fine if you are just like her, and agree with everything she says. Otherwise, no.
THIS CLASS SUCKS. I LIKE READING AND ENJOYED SOME OF THE MATERIAL, BUT SHE JUST TALKS ABOUT HER OPINIONS AND ABOUT NIETZCHE (SORRY IF THE SPELLING IS WRONG). SHE USES THE WORD NOTION IN EVERY SENTENCE SEVERAL TIMES. IF YOU SPEAK UP YOU BETTER KNOW HOW TO BACK IT UP OR ELSE SHE'S JUST GONNA PUT YOU I
I was excited to read the "masterpieces" for this class, which should have been called Masterpieces according to S. Mester. She could care less about her students or the interpretations of the material. Good luck on reading her chicken scratch. The "masterpieces" were quickly destroyed for me by her
Unless you're a brown-noser and a suck up, don't take this class. All it was was a book club with books she likes. Steppenwolf was an awful book but I got a C on the paper because SHE loves it.
This class is really easy as long as you don't miss any. Plus she seems to grade pretty easy.

she is very opininated and your only right if your opinion agrees with hers, i think she is a hard grader also. And she does use the word notion before and after every word! She has good insight to the pieces read and it is interesting, but her ideas and interpretations are the only right ones
Grades pretty tuff on papers. Tests were pretty hard. Just nod your head and agree with her

Hard teacher, but oh so worth it. If you put forth the effort in her classes, you will be rewarded--not by your grade, but by what you get out of it.
Very opinionated and gets off subject a lot. Difficult grader and not understanding about student situations. Get's a very bad attitude if things are not going her way...and could she possibly talk more about her dog?!

She's not too clear on what she's looking for in her essays but her tests were a breeze for me...she's really anal about one participating in class.
The class over all was fairly difficult. She was a hard grader, and there was like a two page written paper due every class period. There was a lot of reading and a lot of work. She is a nice lady though.
Mester is into New Criticism. She does not like to read outside of the text. I am personally a post structuralist, so our view points on literature are different. This difference in critical approach made our class time difficult for me. I did enjoy her vi
Shea loves spirited class discussions but, as others have pointed out, she is SOOO New Critic.... consequently, do NOT bring up author's bio, etc in class...wonderfully disorganized; trust me, it works to advantage
Great prof. Knows her literature. Excellent selection of material; excellent insight. Very helpful out of the classroom.
she picked great material to read, very interesting, almost all the material was easy to comprehend
She was really cool. There's only a paper due every once in a while and it's only 2 pages. She's really nice. She loves people to talk in class. The two novels and the short stories were all pretty good-not your typical English class reading.
Wonderfully, upbeat teacher. She knows her stuff and shows it. She is helpful and terrifically nice. Take this teacher. She is the best.
She chose novels from her generation so she could preach about civil rights the whole time instead of about the book. She never shows up for class. Doesn't tell you what she wants in papers. Grading all over the place. Gives the longest tests imaginable - write 5 essays in an hour and 1/2?!? Plus She left class a few times and didn't return?? Why?
Fairly easy class. All you have to do is read the realitively short stories every day, and then discuss them in class. SPEAK UP in her class; do no be afraid to give her an opinion. Long silences tend to get her irked, and sets you into groups to discuss instead. A few essays and a fair grader.
I like her. I think she is an enjoyable professor, but she is not clear on what she expects in her essays. Also, she makes you feel really bad if you are too shy to talk in class.
she assigned 8 novels in one semester and makes students do the talking and teaching instead of her.. i was terrified to go to class most of the time.. shes terrible
As long as you read the material and speak up, you'll do great in the class.
Mester really is a good lecturer. She lets you write on what you want. In other words she treats you like a college student and like an adult which many teachers don't do. Her literature choices are heavy into African-American lit, so if you are a bigot you will have a hard time in her class. Just do the reading & be able to write well and ;)
This class was ridiculously hard. She needs to know people have a life. She assigned 10 books for winter semester - that's 4 weeks. Plus 2 exams, 4 papers, and she does expect you to speak up in class. Research on the internet before you go in because the stuff she assigns isn't easy to decipher. All A's on written work and got B in class.
Her lectures suck! she gets side tracked with stupid subjects that the students bring up and does not put an end to them because she has nothing to say herself. When we would run out of stuff to say she would either put us in groups or let us leave early. She's terrible and I will never take another English class with her again!
She assigned 10 books for winter semester! and we only got around to covering 9 of them. Very heavy workload and her grading doesn't make sense. I also got all As on written work but somehow only got a B in the class. I'll never take a class from her again.
10 books in four weeks. WTF!!!
I thought she was ok Fall Semester...but her 3920 class showed how bad she can be. The workload was intense, but that's not why I'm giving her a bad review. Some of the lit she chose sucked, she gave As on written work but Bs on the final grade. With 10 books in 4 we it was impossible to spend quality time on each (including whole Arabian Nights)
I think Shea was fabulous. I loved every single class. You have to read the required reading or else you just will not get anything out of the lessons. She gears her lectures around class discussion, which I really appreciate. I don't always like to be told the meaning of a piece of literature. It's nice to have different perspectives from others.
i ended up loving the class as well as her teaching style. She does look at attendance & she loves people who ask questions. 1 day p/week we had art days which were fantastic and had to critically analyze an art piece (song, painting, photo). 3 short papers due on some-what challenging topics but still do-able.I would recm. for critical inquiry.
Honestly, I did not like her teaching style. Took forever to give us syllabus. Confusing at what she wants. Changes her mind a lot. At one point, gave me an A on something, then turned around and gave me a B on the next assignment that was exactly the same! Does not understand that students have lives outside the classroom. Decent professor.
I had her for Survey of World Lit and she has been great. You can tell she is passionate about literature and tries to get the class involved. She gets frustrated when people don't do the readings or do not discuss in class. She is very helpful if you ask, and very kind personality.
I do not recommend her! I got A's on everything and then got a B for semester grade. Her grading is very inconsistent. The class wasn't too hard, but extremely boring. Save yourself the trouble and take someone else.
I took this class with Shea a couple of semesters ago. The literature she selected is interesting. Class participation is a must. Big emphasis on in-class essays which I dreaded! I spoke to her about this early on, and she offered no help. Got B's on all take home essays, but a C for the class, my only C ever in English and at Stan.
Shea is very enthusiastic about reading. She loves to read. If you don't love English naturally, don't take her class. I personally thought her class was boring. I was eager to take the class beforehand, but then I was disappointed when I took it. Her grading is inconsistent, and it was my first B at CSUStan.
I had her for honors Humanities, big emphasis in discussion and literature. Circled around same broad themes, not very structured, but eager to help as long as you ask for it.
Worst teacher I have had at Stanislaus. I took this class the same time I took First year comp. I got an A in first year comp and yet I got a C in shea's class. Makes no sense, I would definitely not recommend her!!!!
This teacher is incredibly lousy. I had taken a Writing for Teachers class with her and received a D, obviously I decided to re-take this course and I ended up with an A from the other professor. Mester is the worst grader and gives out grades as she feels and then does not back up her grading with rubrics. Avoid her if you can, she is terrible.
She sucks. We spent the last 1/4th of the semester making some kind of stupid "earbook" type thing. We had to pay for it out of our own pockets. I threw mine in the trash as soon as I walked out of her class... I could really care less about the random classmates I had in a single low-level English course. Waste of time.
Easy teacher. You never have to show up to class except to turn in assignments . Don't ask for help because she has no helpful comments. Always late.
She is good you should not have any problems with this professor
It was an okay class, but she is really not helpful. Her grading made absolutely no sense, and she does not explain the requirements. She does allow you to write about things that interest you, but be ready for random comments and point deductions that make no sense.
Ehh she's alright. There was alot of things we didn't do on her syllabus. She loves talking about the things we read so that's mainly why we didn't get too far. I wouldn't describe her as bad as these other comments say. Homework was writing (Sometimes 1-3 pages) about how we felt about a story, 2 essays.
She's alright as a teacher, but her grading is inconsistent. I got A's on all of the essays, and I wound up with a B in the class. I think she grades as she feels...
She's a good teacher, willing to help you at ALL times, so I'd take advantage of that because she does give really good suggestions. I think as long as you try and show effort in this class you'll get a good grade. Only thing I'd complain about is her tough grading on essays, She writes sloppy comments that can be confusing to understand at times
Ok here's the deal... Yes her grading makes no sense. I got a B in a class I deserved an A In and an A in a class I deserved a C in. Put that aside, shut up, and go with the flow. You might be surprised to find something about yourself you never knew was there.
She's a decent professor, but her grading is so random. She gives you a low grade and leaves no notes on why. Only had to write two papers: a "short" paper of 5 pages and then an 8 paged paper.
Her Children's Literature class was all about teaching, despite being full of English majors, and she couldn't even teach that right. No learning, no analysis, no insight; she made us read picture books and do arts and crafts. Her grading was unpredictable and she was condescending and unhelpful, on top of constantly changing the syllabus.
An ok teacher, just had to do three essays, and yes her grading system is weird, was not a tough class at all, and she is always willing to help, also she never disagrees with anyones opinions during discussions
Just read the book and talk. That is ALL you have to do for the class. If you don't talk don't expect a high grade. I personally loved her and because I answered her during class, I kept her in a good mood and kept the class going. Really really easy! Read the first two pages of the assignment, discuss, attend, like two papers and you can't fail.
Her lectures suck she isn't very approachable or friendly. She is a bad grader it is very inconsistent.Does not back up her gradings, gives you a low grade & leaves no notes on why. She grades you based on what she feels, and with no rubrics. Not a hard class but she makes it boring.Don't ask her for help because she has no helpful comments to give.
I definitely AGREE! with the person before me. She grades you based on how she feels that day and wether she likes you or not. Do not bother to go for help or email her because she will not help you rather she'll criticize you. She marks you down without notes and expects you to share her opinion. Horrible Experience! Boring! Do not take!
No test, just essays. She is not very clear in whats in them either. Almost have to learn from trial and error. But she can be helpful if you take the time to ask. Easy class after you find out what she wants in her essays.
She is very unclear with her instructions and she changes her mind a lot, which can be very confusing. She is rude and condescending if you ask for help. We wrote a lot of papers and had to read 8 books total. I got A's on all of my papers, but received a C+ in the class. Very inconsistent. I will not take a class with her again.
Honestly, I hate literature, and all this junk, but she is pretty sweet of a lady and does bring out some insightful ideas. Just attend class and I swear you will pass. She also is a huge basketball fan, which is awesome. I am no good at this stuff and easily passed, u can too, promise!
Awesome teacher!! She definitely improved my writing skills and made class fun to go to. Just do the work and speak in class and you'll get an A!
Pretty easy class. Not too much homework just a couple of papers. The longest was only 5pgs. Her grading is a little weird and unclear.
Completely scatterbrained as a professor and gives no real outline on what she wants in essays, but very easy to pass. She spends the classes chatting about the readings and never grades or passes any essays back until the very end of the semester. Out of 5 essays, I know my grade on 1. Definitely not like any Honors teacher I've had.
She was a really opinionated professor. Her class however was very easy. Debates and conversations with her kept it very interesting. Her class structure is very loose making it less stressful. She claims she will be more strict next semester, so there's that.
She is a very good professor. She knows what she is talking about. She is willing to help you. You have to put effort in to get a good grade. She does not have good feedback when grading.
It's like she shoots down anyone's ideas. It's more like a debate class instead of Literature. Also when she says she will do something before the next assignment is due, she doesn't either until the night before or completely forgets.
Class tends to be boring at times. You have homework from book readings pretty much every class day. You also have two papers to write which aren't that hard but she's really vague in explaining them. If you need help and ask her, she's more than willing to clarify things for you. Overall I don't think the class is hard.
You have to put in effort if you want to pass. She's a really tough grader. In class all you do is discuss the readings. If she asks an opinionated question, you're wrong if you don't say what she is thinking . When you ask her a question, she makes you feel really stupid and then wonders why no one wants to speak up. I will never take her again.
Terrible professor in general. My schedule always contravened with hers so i would have to email her to meeting me, and 23 times she had to reschedule minutes before the time we concluded too. She will only help those who she likes. She does not like you expressing your thoughts even though she specifically states that she does. Over
Essays based on the readings, don't slack off and you'll be fine.
She was a tough grader for someone who teaches an intro class. Lecture time was used to discuss the readings from the book, majority were short stories and the rest were really long plays. She won't assign long papers until halfway through the semester. She can be inspirational at times. Try to be active during discussions & you'll be fine.
I enjoyed her class fully. She was very specific with her instructions for the homework and tests and for the tests she practically reviewed the day before so you know what is on it. If you ask her what to do for assignments she tells what she specifically wants.
This call was beyond easy. She gave early any homework and there was only four quizzes which the lowest one get dropped. She tells you everything thats going to be on the quiz and you barley have to read.
She was a super easy teacher to take. She'll review the day before a quiz and that's exactly whats on it. As long as you show up to class and take notes and review your notes you'll pass. You have to go do 3 "art experiences" which is basically looking at something art related, or nature related, and do a written 1-2 page report on it.
All we did was read books and talk about them in class. We were also expected to create our own magazine. The class was alright. If you are liberal in your opinions and agree with her, you'll do much better off in the class.
