Dr. Lowery is an awesome teacher. She's a really cool lady who also teaches a class on serial killers. I really recommend it if you're into that kinda stuff.

Her ways of grading suck and her test are way too off topic and hard

Very down to earth. Brings in guest speakers and presentations, tells stories about serial killers and criminals she knows, gives EXACT study guides, easy to talk to, gives great feedback.
Great professor~! I haad her for criminology and social deviency. Super nice and understanding. The study guide is basically what's going to be on the test. She only has a midterm and a final and reaction papers are optional. Highly recommmand this professor.
An amazing teacher, super easy and interacting. I learned alot from her and she is very sweet. Looks like a mintature barbie doll.
I loved her class, she is a wonderful professor, easy A if you attend and participate in class.
Really cool lady, very easy to approach. I found the class very interesting, great guest speakers, and great discussions. Only gives a midterm and a final, just follow the review she gives you and you'll get an A.
Really cool lady, very easy to approach. I found the class very interesting, great guest speakers, and great discussions. Only gives a midterm and a final, just follow the review she gives you and you'll get an A.
Criminology was great with her. Super interesting. Juv. Delinquency was boring. She expressed clear dislike for the text, so it wasn't the best class. Kind of boring, I guess cuz she didn't like it. But overall, I would recommend her. She made Criminology very interesting. Grades based on midterm and final. Gives extra credit. Good teacher.
Really nice lady, and really helpful if you have any problems. The class is intresting and she grades fairly.
This was the funnest class that I have ever taken at fiu. 2 tests with study guides she provides weeks before the test, insane amounts of extra credit, if you have the chance TAKE THIS CLASS W/ THIS PROFESSOR.
She's awesome
Amazing professor. She gives great study guides for the exams. Her guest speakers are cool too.
Nice Teacher and a pretty easy class if you study. Her class is very boring though. I guess she was okay. She doesn't really take attendance but if you miss her class you will miss her notes and you need her notes. She talks a lot too!!
Dr. Lowery is a great professor. She brought in guest speakers into class, who were very interesting, and offered numerous possibilities for extra credit. She showed a few movies that caught all the students' attention. She also gives out her cell phone number in case a student needed help and couldn't be reached. TAKE HER.
Pretty easy class. IMO, I wasn't nuts about her. She tends to teach the class from her soapbox which I found incredibly annoying. Her rambling makes a 2.5 hour night class feel like it goes on forever. I'm sure I'm in the minority but w/e. On the bright side, she showed a couple interesting movies and her tests are pretty easy. very little studying
Nice lady but she talks really slow which makes class boring. You never have to go to class as long as you do her reviews and study the reviews. She even lets you do extra credit opinion essays which are an easy way to get a better grade. I would definately take her again!
Awesome teacher. Womderful way of explaining things. Guest speakers are stupendous.
interesting, informative and easy-- great combination. She cares about students and gives them every chance to do well
Prof. Lowery is one of FIU's greatest teachers, and my personal favorite. I have taken her for 3 classes. She is extremely knowledgeable about the content of her classes, and is very helpful outside class; she gives students her cell number if they have any questions. Her tests are fair and gives extra credit. Great teacher, strongly recommend.
I took her Criminology class and I loved it. She plays interesting documentaries. Sometimes her lectures tend to be a bit long but if you're interested in criminology and read the book it will make the experience so much better. Midterm and final is the only grades. She does however let you write reaction papers for extra credit.
Professor Lowery is a very nice lady. however, I found her class to be boring so I never went. I ended up with a B in the class. There is only a midterm and a final and if you go like 2 classes before each exam she passes out a study guide which is what I used and I passed the tests. Guest speaker come for extra credit
Dr. Lowery is very knowledgeable about the course content. She is always willing to help and gives extra credit. She might get a little boring sometimes though...and weird outfits! Good prof. overall.
Attendance is not mandatory, she offers a lot of extra credit on top of the course not being difficult. She has a midterm and final and really knows the subject. Brings interesting topics to class but one downfall is that she does tend to ramble and sometimes get on the boring side. Very nice and helpful though. I would recommend her definitely.
Interesting informative and caring. Gives great study guides and grades fairly.
She's nice, she speaks low and slow and she's all over the place, if you study her study guide, you should be fine, it gets really boring and I'm glad it's over, but she's a nice person, she just isn't organized and she curves a bit
Offers plenty of extra credit and overall exams are fairly easy. Gotta admit, sometimes caught myself almost falling asleep but she really knows the material and very nice professor.
She is extremely nice and a fashionista! I looked forward to seeing what outfit she would wear each class. She gives ample opportunities for extra credit. Her exams are fairly easy. There are a lot of T or F questions that are a bit tricky so make sure you study throughly. I really enjoyed the documentaries and the class is not THAT boring.
she is a really nice lady and knows what she is talking about. The only downside is that she gets off topic a lot but thats about it. take her!
Class is easy. Her lectures are entertaining. Her midterm and final come from the textbook and her reviews aren't that helpful. On tests she gives essay which is optional but you get a better score if you don't do it. She's a very nice teacher but she is too sick to teach She takes weeks to respond to emails. Her tests are not easy you need to study
Professor Lowery honestly needs to retire. Her lectures are unfocused and diffuse, not to mention boring. Her tests are VERY hard and ambiguous, so read everything, and ignore the study guide. Just take another class if you want an easy elective in Sociology. Her classes are not it!
This class was easy. However, it looks so easy, that, you will actually don't study that much, then you don't get the A. I got a B+ because I studied like crazy for final. But midterm was horrible.Only 2 exams. She is really nice, a deviant class lol. Is a different class. Read the book and you will be k. prepare more than you expect for the tests.
I have taken 3 classes with her and got A, B+, A- with her so I know her pretty well. She is the nicest and most helpful professor. Answers any question about the tests over email, phone or during office hours. Tests are not easy, covers a lot of stuff. WILL NOT cover everything on the test in lectures so you will need to buy and read book yourself
How could anyone in the world with anything other than just a brain stem find this professor boring? She is by far the most interesting professor I have had at FIU. She knows every aspect of the material covered, allows time for class discussion, and has THE best life experiences in the field to share with her students. Highly recommended!!
Took 2 classes with her: Juvenile Delinquency and Social Deviancy. She is ok but her tests ARE hard. You must read the assigned chapters and study REALLY well the study. BUT she is nice and does not want to see any one fail. Extra Credit is provided. Heck I knew I failed a test, did not do EC, but still got a B. She is a liberal but a nice one!
I took her for Social Deviancy, her tests are HARD and reviews are HARD, so study ahead of time. She gives extra credit and the class is very interesting.
Very good teacher. Really intelligent, interesting person. THe class is 3 hours long so it can get boring, but overall she is very interesting. Tests are super easy if you go to class and mostly study the book. She is a very interesting professor, I definately recommend her.
She is eccentric and a little off the wall, but she knows her material inside and out. Pay attention, take notes, read your book and do the extra credits. Easy A
NOT recommended. took class in spring term, she's super monotone and you cannot pay attention. her notes consist of lowery reading off of a paper that looks like it's from medieval times. completely zoned out every class, her 1 guest speaker was interesting. that was it. waste of a class.
Class isnt mandatory but, youll have to attend in order to take notes that wont be found in the textbook. Half of her exams are from the book & the other half is from her lectures. She gives reviews 2 weeks prior to the exam. Theres a midterm & a final. She's caring & helpful. I love the subject but, I found it challenging to focus during lectures.
Awesome and very sweet. She rocks.
Attendance isnt mandatory but I would recommend you attend on a regular basis because alot of the material that goes on the exams is given in her lectures. Tips: this class is not for slackers,if you want to do well you need to be dedicated, read what is required of the book. Sit in the front and pay attention. She offers extra credit.
Let's face it, this class is not a stroll through central park. It's difficult and if you want an A on her tests you must READ! However, she is extremely helpful and offers A LOT of extra credit opportunities. She answers all her emails. The class is very interesting. Go to class read and studying is a MUST.
Dr. Lowery is one of the best. Yes she is eccentric, but she knows her material and has a very interesting life and stories to share! Truly one of the best at FIU
Dr. Lowery is one of the finest. Ecentric and so knoweledgeable in her field. You must take all her classes!
This class is constantly entertaining. The subject matter is amazing and the class is always in debate. Great guest speakers and good videos. She is very clear and goes over everything if you don't understand. If you pay attention and take good notes you'll pass with no problem. Definitely the one class I recommend to everyone.
Dr. Lowery is a wonderful professor. If all professors taught with the knowledge and care she does more would do better. It saddens me to read some reviews that are negative. She is ALWAYS willing to help, provides multiple opportunities for extra credit. If you fail it is because you chose not b/c of Dr. Lowery's teaching
Professor Lowery is probably the best teacher I've ever had. She is very knowledgeable, nice, and helpful. Tests aren't too hard, and there is ample extra credit. The course piqued my interest, and inspired me to pursue deviance in-depth.
She has a lot of knowledge about sociology and deviance behavior. she shares many interesting stories and also brings in a lot of guest speakers with very interesting lives and stories to tell. she give us a lot of extra credit opportunities. Her test are not very easy, but if you go to class and pay attention you should be ok. TAKE THIS COURSE!!!
2 exams +optional final extra credit for 2pg responses to great documentaries. course content and some AMAZING personal stories in a semi monotone southern drawl. Boredom only in a few theory dense classes at the beginning even with the 3hr classes. Not too time consuming. study and pass. Will gladly stay all night to review for exam. I love her.
one of the best professors I have ever had
Have taken 4 classes with Dr. Lowery. She is one of the best professors I have ever had. Extremely knowledgable, helpful, and friendly! Highly recommend.
Dr. Lowery is extremely knowledgeable. She lectures no powerpoints-and you are expected to take note. Provides plenty of extra credit points (movies, guest speakers, attendance). 2 exams...follow the study guide!!!. Teaches Social Deviance, Criminology and Juvenile Criminology! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!
Extremely intelligent teacher- she knows her material off the back of her hand! I took her for Social Deviancy and it was a great class! Only two mandatory exams with very precise reviews to follow and lots of extra credit available. She's a lovely lady- take her!!
AMAZING PROFESSOR! I loved that class. It was 3 hours long but very interesting. Make sure to take notes of EVERYTHING. Notes are very helpful for exams. She gives study guides. Whatever you don't find in your notes just look it up in the book or ask her. Super easy. A lot of information but take notes and you will be fine. Never missed a class.
Awesome teacher. Make sure you pay attention to all the lectures. Plenty of extra credit opportunity, and she is so incredibly nice.
Dr. Lowery is an inspiration. She is incredibly knowledgeable about the course material and goes to great lengths to help her students apply it to situations that are relevant and current. The topics discussed are extremely controversial, but Dr. Lowery ensures that everyone is respected and feels safe in her classroom. Incredibly provocative!
One of the most knowledgeable professors at FIU. You must take Professor Lowery at one point or another! I have never been more intrigued, subject matter is so interesting. Pay attention and you won't need to study! Passed with an A
this was alright. I didn't hate it but I wouldn't take her again. she offers extra credit. 2 exams with an optional final.
Probably the most interesting course I've taken at FIU. She brings in guest speakers or has us write papers on controversial & educational documetaries shown in class, for extra credit. Covered a wide range of topics of which I learned a lot, which really made me enjoy class. She provides real-life examples to explain concepts discussed in class.
I love Dr. Lowery. I've taken two of her classes, and both times she's really gotten me worked up over the subjects, to the point where I felt inspired to go above and beyond what she taught in the classroom. She's very knowledgeable, and very passionate, and if you go into her class with an interest in the subject, you will no be disappointed.
Class is not mandatory, but you're not going to want to miss her class. She has speakers, and you watch movies, and she gives you extra credit for almost everything. You can pass the test with out going to class but you wont get an A. There are alot of things she teaches you that arent in the books.
LOVED HER CLASS. So interesting! Really enjoyed the documentaries that were shown in class. Such an entertaining class. Enjoyed going to each class.
AMAZING PROFESSOR
Awesome! Have taken 2 classes with her. I wish I could take all my classes w/ her. You must attend class, she loves to talk, just write down everything she says, need to read the book but she doesn't go over it much. She gives study guides to her tests & goes over them in class to make sure you have correct info & you can email her. Just great!
she is one great professor with tons of useful information
Great Professor! Super clear on material to be on test. I found lectures to be very entertaining and interesting. You watch a lot of documentaries and have many guest speakers throughout the course. Study the book when tests are coming up so that you have the correct info (answers are exactly what you read from the book) I'm taking her again :)
Dr. Lowery was excellent! 1 Midterm, 1 Final and Extra credit! She is HILARIOUS when lecturing and always there to answer any additional questions you may have! Highly recommend!
Be ready to take notes, most of the material will be on the test and is not on the book. Interesting discussions but sometimes lectures got boring, depending on how engaged the class is. 2 tests and one optional final. Gives extra credit if you watch documentaries and want to write about it after. Also good guest speakers. Must take
Just attend her class and take notes. I barely read the book, but she provides reviews for the midterm and final and a lot of extra credit. The material is also very interesting.
You should attend class, not only because its actually interesting and she herself is interesting, but especially if you plan to not purchase the book. I did not buy the book and passed with an A by just attending her lectures. Go for it, shes very approachable and likes participation.
Go to class, pay attention to her lectures, and take notes. Do the EASY reaction papers because it helps out a lot at the end & study for her two exams (a midterm & final). All of the answers you basically get from her in class when she gives her lectures & you can also find them in your book. Overall, an EASY A. You'll be glad you took her. Trust.
I took her class summer B, so it was short, but I learned a lot. Her lectures are interesting and we just had a midterm and final. Also, she offers extra credit by doing essays based on documentaries and guest speakers. Easy A as long as you show up to class, have all the notes, and study.
Two exams. Optional final. Great study guides. Loads of extra credit opportunities. She's very caring and wants you to succeed. Long lectures but interesting material. Lectures are very helpful, but not required. I recommend getting the book. One of the best professors I've had.
If youre not into super long lectures, do not take her!! Personally I didnt mind, but I can understand why some people may not enjoy her classes. All she does is lecture and gives no assignments or anything. She does offer a lot of extra credit opportunities. Her grading criteria & policies are really confusing.
She's kinda archaic with her facilitation of teaching. No use of canvas or powerpoints. She just straight up lectures in a monotone voice. Sometimes it's interesting, most of the time it's common knowledge (for some at least) or her opinion/experiences on certain topics. Pretty boring but she's knowledgeable.
Perfect Study Guides. Midterm/Finals are the only graded assignments. Reaction Papers(Summary papers including class material connected to the papers.) If I would've done them, I would got an A. Class is easy as long as you attend and take great notes. Some people think she lectures heavy and couldn't stand it. I personally enjoyed it.
She is such a phenomenal professor, I loved her class. Her teaching style was so easy to follow along with, she is very knowledge and provides so many real life examples that make understanding the material easy. ATTENDANCE AND BOOK IS NEEDED! You will need to know about the theories and material from lectures in order to write the papers.
Professor lowery is a phenomenal professor. You need to show up to class and participate to pass. You cant learn this straight from the book. Shes very knowledgeable and makes the class engaging. Shes accommodating, and available for help if you need her. Simply amazing, the knowledge and expertise she brings to the course is unmatched. Take her
Best elective I've ever taken. She's easy to reach out to and the class lectures are discussion based, as you give your opinion and ask questions about the subject matter. Her exams are written assignments with revisions that can be done on the second try. There's also papers to do on documentaries but it's easy to do as she grades on content only.
She is incredibly kind and knows her material. She can recite background info on different cases instantly. I loved that about her. The textbook is mandatory for discussions/assignments. She gives chances to review your papers and extra resources. She is a strong woman. What a shame my class was so small. Please say hi and bye to her in class!
I took this professor for Social Problems fall 2023 and it was the best decision. Her entire class consisted of three reflection papers which she gives you the rubric to follow so even if you're not good at writing it will be easy. 2 quizzes which were 5 questions and she would cancel class that day. And two group projects which are super easy.
I'm not a fan of her lecturing style, but her use of mediums kept the class engaged (Many, MANY documentaries and films). The TA was useful and my main critique was aimed at the low amount of assignments (4). She does let you resubmit once she's given feedback. Pretty lenient and tends to entertain convo's made by students.
Great professor. The class is relatively simple, 3 papers and a final. She gives you feedback and two weeks to resubmit once she grades them. Honestly, a great professor and class with not many complaints. The topics of focus are interesting and it is noticeable that she cares deeply about what she teaches. Absolutely recommend if possible.
Professor Lowery is super nice and caring. She was very understanding when I needed extra time for assignments. Her class is also very chill, there are not many assignments and they're all pretty easy. Additionally, the class can be fun and boring at times. Overall, take her if you can!
Dr. Lowery has 3 documentaries you'll watch with a 3-5 page reflection essay each time. We had 2 powerpoint which were super easy and fun to do, and one small 5 question assignment. Class is talking about different topics and what's going on in the world. She liked when you are engaged with her. She is a great professor and I will take her again.
This is the most understanding professor i have ever had! Lectures are great but it's super important to take notes and have the book.
If you're interested in the subject you'll love her lectures. She's very insightful and keeps it real. Her lectures were really captivating and gave you something to think about. If topics like sexuality, politics, or religion make you uncomfortable maybe this won't be your cup of tea but I loved the open discussions in her class.
Awesome and understanding teacher with great lectures. There are some group projects which I'm not really that into, but, she lets you work alone which is great. She's very insightful and knows a lot about the social topics she speaks on. Overall this class is one of the best ones I have taken. If I could rate her six stars out of five, I would.
I had a great experience with her. She was lenient on grading her papers as well as group projects. She accepts late work if you speak to her about it as well. Would recommend this class if you're looking for an "easy" one.
Such a great prof. 2 papers, a midterm (essay format), and final (essay format). Takes a while to grade but its not a big deal. We watched a lot of documentaries in class and the class was very interesting. She allows extensions on everything and gave us the option to do a presentation instead of the final
