very nice but always seems worried or hurried. She would be great to have in a smaller class setting.
She is very, very, very nice and willing to help you in anyway. Tests are kind of hard, but she curves.
she is very nice but she always seems to be lost somewhere in her mind. definitely should read book along with the notes. test are pretty tough but she scales greatly
Dr. Black was very nice and helpful. Her tests were primarily focused on book, not the notes, so the tests were somewhat hard. However, she gave an excellent scale.
I think she is one of the most intersting teachers I have had at UA. I am not really that intersting in Py and i loved this class. She does not take role but I still went to class. The tests are average. She gives out study guides before tests and has study sessions. She also has her notes online. She is full of intersting info. Take her is you can
very easy, nice teacher. take her if you can. easy a
She is a great teacher, and her tests are fair. She holds study sessions prior to tests that really help and gives study guides. Her tests comes mostly from the notes, but just do the study guide. Very interesting class!
one of the worst teachers ever! please understand. the comments below were probably written by her!! her tests are very difficult and she talks WAY too fast! the final exam is also cumulative(everything studied throughout the semester!--and soo hard!) dont take her class.
Her class was not terribly difficult, but it wasn't easy either. You definately have to study. Her study sessions are VERY helpful. I wouldn't have known what to study otherwise because she isn't very clear in class. She is very nice and helpful though. The most annoying thing about her is the fact that she doesn't know how to pass out tests!
Very helpful teacher. She wants to give you an "A" but you have to earn it all on your own. Fairly difficult class and Lectures are pretty boring.
I have studied more in this class than I have for any class so far in college, but as a result I have learned a LOT!!! With her study guides and 8-15 point curves, I have aced the tests! The class is fun and one of the few I actually learn interesting, useful information in. Shiela wants to see her students succeed, and as such she will help you!!
This was my worst professor. I was extremely disappointed. She seemsed very unorganized and unprepared for class, and is not very clear. She seems to be more preoccupied with her meetings than teaching.I'm in nursing, and we didn't even go over the interesting chapters on mental disorders!?! I've to say though, it's easy to get an A.
This teacher knows what she is talking about, but just can not teach it at all. I had to study the book a lot and i really suggest it. Also, her reviews she gives you are like her scattered thoughts just blown on the page there is no organization what so ever. I don't recommend taking this teacher. Furthermore, her test are very hard.
Loved the class and she is an awesome professor and person. I would love to have her again!
This was my hardest class this semester but I absolutely loved it. Its crucial you go to class and take notes. I have 54 pages typed from this class alone. The only problem is that its hard to listen to her lectures while taking taking them. I would recommend her to anyone. She has a sweet disposition and is fair.. P.S. Attend review session.
Sheila is not a very good teacher. I went to almost every class and did not understand a thing. I have a notebook full of useless notes. She can't stay on one topic for more than 2 seconds before she switches to something else without actually explaining the first topic. Don't take it..it sucks.
SHE SUCKS!!!!!!!! DO NOT TAKE HER FOR YOUR LIFE!! She makes no sense. Me and my friends would shop during class because we gave up trying. her powerpoints have words on them that dont relate back to the book and u cant google them. DO NOT TAKE HER! <-- I hope u at least take that way from this post.
Dr. Black is a GREAT teacher. I had her Fall 2010 and really liked it. Going to class and copying her notes from the powerpoint is important in order to do well on the tests, but when I had her she curved EVERY test, INCLUDING the final and the review sessions are extremely helpful. Go to those if you get her.
Her tests are straight from her lectures and never anything she didn't cover. The only bad thing is that she doesn't use tegrity or put her notes online so you have to go to class to get them. Overall not a bad class and she was not hard.
the text book is useless don't waste your cash. she only tests from the lectures and doesn't take roll. and no online notes. basically only take her if u plan on attending every class and can put up with her annoying voice and tedious teaching style
This class isn't that bad. Go to class, take notes, and attend the study sessions before a test, and you will be fine. Don't buy the book because you never use it. She gives extra credit, and if you go to the study sessions she gives you a lot of the answers to the test. I think she's good.
Pretty easy class. She is very happy and helpful, but sometimes she appears disorganized and/or confused. I highlighted important topics in the book, and that seemed to help. Also, her notes aren't on elearning, so be sure to go to class as much as possible.
Go to class! That is the only way to get the notes. Also, go to the review sessions! She reads from the test. If you go to class, the review sessions, and put in a little effort; an A is possible.
Not a hard class at all. Yes you have to go to class to get the notes but attendance is not mandatory. Her tests are not hard they are basically just from the notes and she adds a 7-10 point curve to every test which helps a lot so even if you make a 100 you get a 110 averaged into your grade.
She is a horrible teacher that rambles. Her notes and slide shows do not help. You have to teach yourself from the book. Her study guides for tests just list the terms you need to know, so use that and just go through the textbook.
she is the sweetest teacher ive ever had! her powerpoints are really vague so you need to go to class to take notes but GO TO THE STUDY SESSIONS because she reads off the test! overall its an easy class and is super lenient on your grade
Her voice is so annoying. I had to stop going to class because it was like she was yelling at us. She gives a study sheet before the tests so all you really have to do is google the terms. Really easy. If you want a little more help, just go to her review session. This class is easy, but she is annoying.
Her voice is kinda annoying, she's an OK teacher, but not my favorite. The only thing I got out of going to class was examples and some notes! She gives a study sheet for every test, and always adds a curve. Test are the only things your get graded on. She give extra credit oportunities, but that's it! DO NOT BUY THE BOOK FOR THIS CLASS!
This class was a pretty easy class. You do not have to attend any of the classes because she doesnt take roll. Has study guides, and even reviews them and it is so beneficial. MAKE SURE you show up to her study sessions she basically goes over the whole test. Overall, she is a great teacher and if you study for the tests you will do well.
She is an awesome professor. Her class was easy. She tells you everything you need to know for the test. Your book isn't used, I wouldn't buy it. Attendence isn't mandatory, but go! Its so much easier to understand.
Excellent professor. Do not get the book. If you go to class she will ask questions that appear WORD FOR WORD on the exams. She gives over 20 bonus points and lets you drop a test. She is extremely knowledgeable and will never hesitate to explain something until it makes sense to you. Easy A, Take her!
At first I attended all the classes, but after awhile I realized attendance is not mandatory or even necessary. She gives a study sheet for every test. I would suggest working through it (I bought the book and used it for this, but you could just use google and your own notes), but towards the end I just went to the test reviews and made A's. Easy.
I'm gonna be honest, I had a hard time paying attention in class, and then I never went home and reviewed the chapters in the book. The only study session I went to was for the final, which was worth a hefty 40% of my grade. This class is an Easy A if you actually go home and read your book and use the study guides she sends out for each test.
Sheila Black is great! I was worried about PY 370, but she is so super easy. Her tests were WORD FOR WORD off of the textbook homework multiple choice website so memorize those and get an A+. Must go to class, thats the only place with her notes she doesnt believe in blackboard LOL, .but its a short class, you never stay over 30 minutes. TAKE HER
Overall, Dr. Black's class wasn't that bad. Attendance is not mandatory, you don't need textbook, she gives study guides and you can find most answers online. You'll have 4 tests, which can be kind of tough, but if you study, you'll be find, and she gives a good scale for them. Also gives a lot of extra credit opportunities. Would take again.
Definitely take her class, it's easy and tests come straight from the book's study help multiple choice questions. You always know what to expect, and she takes time out of her own week to do a study session before exams. She's nice, but I found her hard to listen to, but it was fine because her lectures are short. Notes are disorganized, though.
Don't let "Intro to Psychology" fool you. This class is not a breeze. You have to actually study for tests, and there are 12 research hours you have to complete. She has study sessions that are helpful for tests. She occasionally scales the tests, but not the final. If she answers your email, it won't be quick. Her teaching style is confusing.
She is a sweet lady and her lectures definitely help you on the test so don't skip class! She gives study guides that correlate with the test so if you do the study guide and learn whats on it youll be fine! I would take her again!!
Such as easy class. Definitely take for an easy A!
Interesting class. Easy honors credit. Go to the review sessions, she'll tell you what's on the tests. I didn't read the book once, just pay attention & take notes. Randomly takes attendance for EC. High pitched voice, but it didn't bother me. Sweet lady. Gives a lot of real life examples and explains material well. Cumulative final plus 3 tests.
Dr. Black is so sweet and respectful. Her test are not very difficult, and her review sessions cover most of the information on the tests. She doesn't give any homework; however, participating in 12 hours of research is required to pass the class. I bought a textbook and a mypsychlabs access code, but I haven't needed either of them.
Lectures tended to be very long and boring, but easy A in the class. Do not buy the book I never opened it and always go to the review sessions! She also gives lots of optional extra credit if you need a grade booster. Overall, not a horrible class, just not the best.
I loved Dr. Black. Her class was very straight-forward: show up for class, take the powerpoint notes in class, study, and take the test. As long as you followed her notes, I had no difficulty preparing for or doing well on any of the tests.
easy class and teacher, not my favorite because lectures tend to be long and boring. make sure and take notes on all the power points and do the extra credit that is offered. she gives study sheets and has pre test study sessions. overall good class just not my favorite.
Grade is determined by three exams and the final. Studying is needed to make solid grades on the tests. Attendance isn't mandatory. However, Dr. Black gives random extra credit for going to class. I wouldn't have had an A if it wasn't for the extra credit probably. Lectures are pretty clear and material is interesting.
You gain all of your notes in class. You take them straight from a powerpoint, so it can get really annoying and boring at times. She does give you a study guide before each test, and your grade only comes from tests. I did get really annoyed in this class at times due to boredom, but some of her lectures were meaningful. I wouldn't take again.
She's a very nice lady. The class could be very very boring, though. All notes were from class, and you would be unprepared for tests if you didn't go. She had helpful reviews for tests and the midterm and final. She was always helpful if you asked. Your grade depended on your tests pretty much, and a research component. I'd recommend her
There are only 2 papers and she gives you the questions to her test before you take them. Easy grader and very passionate about her studies. Would recommend.
I'm a psych major so this is an important class for me! LOTS of material, but it's all important. Anything she lectures about is fair game for the test, but she gives good study guides and always lets you out of class early. The tests range from short to long and she uses lots of examples when she teachers. She'll always answer questions.
Dr. Black is a super sweet professor, but be prepared to struggle. If you never took AP Psychology in high school you will struggle in her honors class. She teaches a little all over the place and never knows where we finish in class. Her class lectures are really boring, but take notes on all the slides and you will be fine.
Dr. Black is a very nice lady. If you need anything, she normally emails back within the day. That being said, she is not very tech savvy so your grades never make sense. I was not sure of my grade until it was posted after finals. She does reviews and study guides before test, which are helpful even if they don't narrow down material.
This is a very easy class, especially for honors. I didn't go to class for the last two months and still made an A. Don't buy the online book. Do the research requirement early though because by the end of the semester, there aren't many left and you may have to write papers.
Psych isnt needed for my major, I just took it as a SB credit. If youre like me I recommend taking this class online or through an easier teacher. I ended up getting an A+, but I studied the whole study guide every test and watched all the recordings of class I missed. Also wrote about 10 extra credit papers. An A+ is possible, but difficult.
Dr. Black is one of my favorite psychology professors. She really cares about her students and is a very fair grader. TAKE HER CLASS!
Super sweet lady! Easy powerpoint notes. One very easy presentation. Go to the review sessions before each exam! She uses the exact questions from the exams during the session. Have to do some participation in psych studies, either survey online or in person but they're easy! Pretty much just to help grad students get their research done.
I really don't understand some of the negative reviews. She does teach off the PowerPoints, but the information is mostly interesting. She always does test reviews so the tests end up being super easy. She also gives bonus points for simply participating in the reviews. Overall super sweet lady and easy class. I would 100% recommend this class!
I loved Dr. Black. She made it very easy to get an A in her class, but I still learned a lot as well. You could tell she cares about her students on a personal level, and she worked hard to make her lectures entertaining with videos and interactive portions.
She is very nice and she knows what she is talking about. However, this class is the most disorganized class I have ever taken. It is easy, but it is really annoying. Literally nothing about this class was organized at all. There was no clear format, no clear grading, nothing on the syllabus ended up being what we actually did in class.
She gives 30 points in extra credit opportunities, which is great. Even if you don't show up to class every day, she gives attendance opportunities until the very last day, and those are worth the entirety of your attendance points. She is very passionate about what she teaches, but the class is horribly disorganized.
Very nice professor, gives extra credit, but HORRIBLY disorganized. Tests are fine if you can self teach. However, the final was worth almost half our grade. She didn't send out the study guide (1000 words of pure terms) until Sunday night when the exam was Thursday at 8am, and the study session for the exam was less than 24 hours before the final.
Possibly the worst professor in the Psychology department at UA. The tests are absurd, the questions do not make sense, and I do not think a single person knew what was going on in class. She makes test reviews on Sundays, and her study guides are the least helpful things ever. Awful. Super unorganized class. Do not recommend!
The entire semester I have honestly had no idea what is going on. If you do not go to class be prepared to NOT rely on the notes she posts because they don't make sense either. Half of my class refused to take one of the tests because she clearly did not prepare us. Also don't get me started on the cumulative final that is worth 42% of your grade.
GET THE HECK OUT JUST LIKE THE JORDAN PEELE MOVIE. Do not freaking recommend, you will want to jump out of a dang window and pray to the heavens that something good comes out of this class. beware. beyond disorganized and extremely chaotic. very nice but very clueless. god bless and hopefully I get a 90% on this final.
The most disorganized class I have ever taken. She should NOT be the only professor who teaches PY470. If you do not need to take this class -- do NOT take it. She does not make herself available after class and hardly responds back to emails. Our final is worth 42% of our grade and she has not given us any information to prepare. Awful professor.
Great professor.
I was nervous taking this class because of the review but honestly Dr. Black is an amazing professor. Her slides are a little wanky but if you go to class you are fine. She is great at explaining things and can tell she cares. She has a bunch of videos and gives many examples for the things we are discussing. You can tell she is very knowledgable.
Her slides are not very easy to comprehend if you dont go to class, and the format of the class is a little weird, but other than that shes a great prof. You can tell she really cares and she is very knowledgeable. Just go to class and youll be fine.
She gives you study guides, making it almost impossible to not do well in the class. If you look up those terms in the textbook, you don't even have to go to class. I only attend the review sessions and get an A+ on the tests. This is a very manageable class. The bad reviews are exaggerations.
Took Dr Black for PY470 and really enjoyed her and would recommend her! She is very sweet and caring and understanding making it easy to reach out to her. The lectures are a bit boring but the material is easy to understand and almost all of the test materials come from the lectures
Dr. Black is really nice and pretty easy. As long as you show up for class and do a decent job on your papers and presentations you will be fine. Having the class for 3hr at a time is rough because she lectures the whole time, but you really don't have to listen either.
Dr. Black is a very run of the mill professor. Her lectures are just very long and she doesn't add much inflection so it becomes hard to listen quickly. As well she is incredibly inept when it comes to technology. I was virtual due to COVID and there were multiple times she couldn't figure out how to turn on the camera or the sound.
Her lectures never gave much, she mainly did squarecaps during class time, so you're basically expected to read the book to learn, but study the squarecaps because the questions will be on the test. her exams were optional to do online or in person. She doesn't respond to emails fast, and doesnt understand computers, but she is very kind at least.
Don't listen to all of these reviews, seriously. My class was complaining about the structure of the class literally on day 2 amongst other things. If you literally just try to attend class, ask questions, and *not get up and leave the classroom every time she's literally done speaking,* you'll likely get the grades you want. Very helpful professor
Don't listen to all the negative reviews. Dr. Black is so sweet and I had no trouble with her class at ALL. She doesn't take attendance, but she does squarecaps quizzes in class that you need to do a certain number of. Her test questions come from her posted lectures, and she posts study sheets before every test which helped me a lot.
She is the sweetest lady ever. She genuinely wants her students to do well and is willing to help anywhere she can. She does optional night review before tests just to make sure her students do well. However, the final is worth 40% and there is a lot of work that is worth little in comparison. Get ready to teach yourself most of the material too.
If the way people speak sometimes gives you anxiety please do not take her classes. She talks in stops and starts and it is very choppy and hard to listen to.
Dr. Black is outrageously incompetent. Does not understand technology yet requires us to use it. Did not plan or explain anything ever. Terribly unclear instructions and never responds to emails. Cumulative final worth 40% yet did not learn a thing from her. Do not take this class if you can help it. 0/10 do not recommend.
Do not listen to these bad reviews. Dr Black is an amazing professor! It is clear she is very knowledgeable on the subject she teaches. She provides so much extra credit it's literally impossible to fail her class. Very easy for a 400 level course. Just show up and do your work and actually listen to her lectures and you'll do fine.
Pretty much all lectures, boring PowerPoint slides that get posted, and long tests. The class was pretty easy if you've got the mind and study time for it. Probably one of the easier 400-lvl classes for Psych majors.
I know that Dr. Black is probably a VERY nice woman but her class was genuinely insufferable. Her power points either had so much information that it was unreadable or so bare it was pointless. Her lectures were so incredibly boring and she would make the same point 5 times. Also, if people's voices bug you, this is not the class for you.
Dr. Black is genuinely a great professor and I'm not understanding where a lot of these negative reviews are coming from. Her grading criteria is super clear and she provides study sheets for each test. Not to mention, she provides a TON of extra credit opportunities so it is difficult to do poorly in the class. Would definitely recommend her!
This class was fine, and some of the material was actually very interesting, but gosh it was so hard to pay attention to her. The pitch and tempo of her voice drove me up the wall, but other than that, it was easy to make As and she gave so much extra credit. Definitely not the worst
Dr. Black is so sweet! Always accessible outside of class and truly cares about her students. She does her best to make the lecture content fun and engaging. We have weekly homeworks and in-class assignments, but they are participation-based so they buffer your grade a ton. Plus, you get a drop test. Interesting class and so easy to succeed in!
Professor Black is a very lecture orientated teacher, but she clearly knows what she is talking about and is not a difficult grader. Would take again!
Professor Black is very sweet, however, her class is a bit disorganized. There's also a 40% cumulative final at the end of the semester. I've never gotten above an 80 on her exams, but she does give a good bit of extra credit. Let's pray I get an 80 or above on her final.
This class was something. There is a lot of information, and she lectures the entire time. There is a lot of opportunity for extra credit and she most likely will add points to exams to bring the class average up. You do and don't need to attend, if you want square cape points you have to go because she puts a code to open it. Final is cumulative.
Dr. Black is very sweet and knowledgeable. The syllabus says you need to do about 6 hours of studying a week for her class. But, her lectures can sometimes feel very rushed, and the cumulative 40% final is time consuming, lots of information, applied topics, and overall difficult. I wouldn't take this course again. Maybe a different course.
Go to class, you will need the sqaurecap questions for test practice, and she's a lovely lady. Go to her study sessions; they help. I got a 100 on her tests. You will need to study, and when you do, you'll do well. Her final was hard, but I think she curved it. She gave lots of extra credit, which will improve your test grades.
