class is a bit of a drag. makes us buy too many books for the class and we dont use them in class. it's just for reading and to discuss in class... nothing else. i personally wouldnt recommend this teacher.
I feel that I learned more from this teacher in this class than I have learned in the sum total of my other university classes. Great subject. Food for thought. Good teacher. Too many books however, like a previous reviewer noted- expensive. But, the books have a lot of great info.
The class was not what I expected...it's mostly about women in South America and how women's lib in the U.S. was ****. Some subjects were really interesting but a lot wasn't and it was kinda hard to follow and class and assignment goals unclear. She's also intimidating in class, but not outside.
Sheila is pretty imtimidating. She's one of the smartest people I've ever met and I feel like I've learned more from her class than all my other college classes.Lots of reading and books, but not that much work. Weekly discussion questions, midterm and final. Thats It.Take the class, youll learn alot
She was the sterotypical college professor:total reading and lecture with a midterm and a final. Makes you buy far too many book the majority of you won't even have to read, didnt have to use her reader for the second part of the class cause you weren't tested on any of it, all in all though a great professor
Sheila is the most professional public school teacher I've encountered. Coming off a little harsh at first, i wasn't sure if i'd enjoy her class, but she made it very interesting. Do not take this class if you don't like to read and discuss because a solid portion of the class is just this. Sheila wears a disturbing amount of silver blracelets.
very strict and not lenient at all. grades papers hard.
Sheila was VERY organized- something I greatly appreciate. She presented the material well and was very clear about what she expected. Even though this was an upper division course, the material involved seemed to be too general. This class would be well suited to someone seeking an introduction to race issues.
Her lectures well organized, the books chosen excellent! Her ezams simple if u attend LECTURE REGULARLY!!! Her current event assignment was graded arbitrarily and was unclear, She is standoffish and rude at first , but overall an excellent Prof
I've learned a lot from Sheila's classes. She also makes sure she makes connection between what she teaches and current real-world situations. She may seem intimidating, but she is very willing to listen to and help students. Go to her office hours if you are not clear about class materials.
I took this class to get my LLD satisfied and am extremely glad I did. Sheila is an excellent teacher, incredibly knowledgable on this subject. Her readings are well chosen and always interesting. I highly recommend her for this class or any other.
UNLESS YOU ARE A ANTH OR HMSX MAJOR DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. SHE TEACHES IT LIKE EVERYONE IS AN ANTH MAJOR. A TON OF READING EXAMS ARE FAIRLY EASY. MT TAKE HOME & FINAL IN CLASS IS CUMMULATIVE. SHEILA IS VERY INFORMATIVE AND WILL OPEN YOUR EYES TO A WHOLE NEW WORLD BUT IF YOU JUST NEED A SEG III CLASS THIS IS NOT FOR YOU. VERY, VERY HARD READING
Great class! You will learn so much, and be challenged to think in new ways.
Sheila should teach all other teachers how to be fantastic, she knows her stuff, she knows what she wants as a teacher, she knows what she wants from her students. She wants you to succeed. I felt like my brain was being opened. I would reccomend her, hands down.

She's not a bad teacher, and an easy grader, not that much homework either, just readings.
This class in summer is pretty hard, lots of reading. Worst Anthro class I ever took. As a teacher, she plays favorites, is bias and doesn't really want to hear the opinions of others. Would not reccommend her.
Not for slackers, only reason someone would give her a poor rating is that they don't want to learn. Well put together lectures, organized class. You will be made uncomfortable and challenged. This is why you are here, to learn. Highly recommended.
super tough class she is real intelligent&provokes her students to think critically of race and the role of racism throughout history. very thought provoking and inspiring class. shocking films, amazing lectures, lots of reading, 1 take home midterm 6pgs, cultural prjct 2pgs, 1 take home final. a powerful class, basically one of the best prof. here
very challenging and opens your mind up. the class has been a refreshing experience. super helpful, don't be afraid to go to the office hours, she really does try to help all her students! i was struggling for a bit, but after meeting with her i'm doing better. basically the best prof. at SF State!
one of the most helpful and thought provoking professors i have had at SFSU. Do not take this course expecting an easy A, you will have to do a lot of reading and the readings are challenging, both in content and in provoking the way you think. Changed the way i look at various issues. definately interested in your success. highly recommended
Yeah, she's like my hero. SO FUNNY! And thought provoking too. Her classes are challenging in the sense that you need to keep up with the readings and pay attention...but anyone should be able to pull a B if they give an honest effort to the take home midterm/final. You'll learn plenty and will remember the class long after it's finished.
Sheila, is very qualified, in her passion and life experience when it comes to anthropology. She's a tough grader, and is very strict on her policies. I found the class very interesting regardless of all the work. Truly an A grade college professor.
She might seem really intimidating but shes nice. I recommend you visit her during her office hours if you are having any problems because she really cares about helping her students and understanding them so if you're having any trouble go see her and she'll help you out.
Her class is a very interesting one, as I've taken several anthropology classes before, her angle is very feminist-geared (which is awesome). The readings are mandatory for class participation (a fair portion of the grade), so get your reading done. The reading itself isn't difficult, but sometimes can be boring and convoluted to the point of
she is my hero! im not even getting an A in this class, but her passion to ensure students that they are getting a quality education in a public school setting is inspiring. she really cares but shes not the type to candy coat things, she tells it to you straight; which is really refreshing. i wish there were more teachers like her at state.AMAZING
very rude. she made it clear that us "state" students are her charity work. im taking it for seg III, not the best choice but oh well. she said she'll give cr/nc after the final if it looks bad for us so thats cool. not too many assignments but A LOT of readings. we watch a movie almost every class so thats cool. im crossing my fingers for a C...
One of the best teachers on campus. If anyone wants to learn.. take her class. She is extremely helpful and very engaged in stuff that actually matters like activist work outside and inside of campus and encourages people to attend. She is very inspiring and knowledgeable. I would definitely take another class with her.
If you do the reading you will pass. She expects you to think critically and have an opinion. She's tough but fair and gives lots of lead to her expectations.
You have to do all of the readings as well as write critically in order to get a good grade. The good thing is that the course material was extremely interesting!
Sheila is the best professor I've had at State. Her lectures are engaging and frequently amusing, she is very organized, corresponds well through email, and is extremely helpful. She can be very intimidating and is a critical grader, but she really just wants to make sure you're learning and engaged. I would take many, many classes with her again!
She assigns excessive amount to read per week 400+ and is useless material. i recommend to take another class, i learned absolutely nothing. She expects us to know the material like we took another class of hers. 1st day of class she talks about hegemonic, it's the end of the sem and i still don't know what it means, that's how much i learned in cl
Excellent Class!Plan on keeping all of my reading material for future reference/re-reading. My only regret is that we did not have more time in class to discuss things.
I took her Racism class and it was amazing. i learned more in this class than any of my other classes. She is kind of intimidating but an awesome teacher. as long as you do the readings and attend class you will get a good grade and learn a lot. this class changed my perspective on a lot of issues. Take her if you want to learn :)
Sheila is awesome, she is such a good teacher and really gets you fascinated by the material she teaches. You do actually have to do the work, but if you do you'll get an A. Those students who don't like her must be lazy.
Sheila ranks among the best teachers I've had at SFSU, but she is tough. With such a large class, it's easy to think that you can get away with not doing the reading, but she warns you from the beginning that you must do it. As long as you do, and you come to class and put forth miniumum effort, you'll do well. If you're lazy, too bad for you!
Anyone that rated her poorly is an idiot. And we covered the word "hegemonic" a million times (response to a post on here). Lots of reading, attendance counts. You will learn a TON. Easy to do well as long as you try in the class and she makes herself available to you. She will count attendance that was what gave me a B instead of an A
this teacher is the worst ever. take this teacher if you want long, boring, assignments, such as 100 pages a week. i never had the most boring teacher. her T.As are wistleblowers, and she has an rude attitude. to make matters worse her class is like 100 degress. take this teacher... i dare you
this teacher is so rude, when i got home and fell asleep, she was in my dreams yelling at me to wake up... then when i got to class the next day, she told me "i dare you to sleep in class so she can yell at you again"! it sucks becuase im an "A" student and her class is soooooooo boring, i wish there were windows so i can watch the grass grow.
I loved Prof. Tully. Super hard and intense class, interesting books. You really need to do the work...this is college
She seems super strict for the first couple of classes, but really is ok. She is bossy and expects you to always be thinking of sex and gender. There is A LOT of reading to do, but the papers are easy. REading is a must, you have mini quizzes from them. I learned a lot! Challenging class. Dont take for seg III!
Great instructor and really knowledgeable. 3 easy essays and she will definitely help you with the final paper. I would recommend her
one word: INTENSE WOMAN!i wont lie.. shes a little nuts and intimidating and VERY scary, but she knows her stuff. class is actually interesting if you manage to read the mountains of assignments. tips: STAY ON TOP OF THE READINGS. take your time on the essays. TALK ALOT during class. ask her for help ASAP. i acutally liked the class :)
Cross-Cult Sex & Gender, Tully-Interesting, enlightening class. Hard grading on essay format midterm & final. Readings are a MUST b/c there are random quizzes. Tully is clearly passionate about the subject, but her lectures kind of ramble. Films at the end of each lecture are the most interesting part. You WILL learn something from this class.
Shiela is by far one of the BEST professors i've had at S.F state. Sure, when you see her you'll get the impression she's hardcore, intimidating, and scary(kelly cutrone anyone?) but she's actually nice, and caring. She's exremely passionate about her classes- Smartest women i'll ever meet. p.s. IT'S VITAL THAT YOU READ! -don't waste her time.
Cross cult sex and gender. One of the best classes I ever took at State you will learn a lot from her. You need to do the work though this is not an easy class. Really one of the most brilliant people I have ever met
This is the second time I've had Tully (I had her Sex and Gender class before) and once again I was not disappointed. She's a tough, but fair teacher who's always willing to help you out. It's important you attend regularly and do the reading, but you WILL learn a lot. I always enjoyed her lectures and assignments, even the difficult ones.
This was a great class and I love Sheila. She can come across as a loud east-coaster, but stick around, she is a great lecturer! She assigns articles and movies and the class is about discussion. Just show up, have an opinion and participate.
Tully was awesome. she knows her material to the T and is incredibly smart. She answers every questions quickly and concisely in a well thought out manner. She's done some amazing things in her lifetime and the articles she's written are really interesting. lots of work, but worth it. take her class she rules!
Do not take her class if you're looking to fulfill Seg III requirement. I made that mistake and I totally regret it. Tully's class is hard though parts of it are interesting. She overanalyzes everything and is really strict on grading the essays. I would recommend taking only if this is your major.
ridiculously strict. TA's are even worse. students are treated like children. not so cool!
Sheila has firm control of her class - no nonsense allowed. Seems intimidating at first, but you soon realize she is a marshmallow under her huffing and puffing. She broadened my viewpoints in many areas and I admire her fierce determination for social justice. She is a remarkable woman and teacher. Take her class and do the work-it is worth it.
Tully is one of the best professors I have had in my higher education. She is tough, but she knows her subject and she teaches it well. I am an A student and got a D on her first paper. She is helpful though, so helpful I got a B+ on my last paper and a B+ in the class. If every teacher was like Tully, the human race would be a bit smarter.
Tully is the best and smartest professor I've had. Before taking d class, I didn't know anything about it and then afterward I just learned new insights. Even though she was sometimes a bit strict, she was actually nice and helpful. She knows her stuff well and I want to thank her for all her help and understanding for her students.
Dr. Tully is one of the best professors I've ever had. She restored my faith in anthropology and pushed me to challenge myself in every single class I took her with her. Wish SFSU would give her tenure, because she is one of the best professors in the department!
This class is really easy for segment 3 because their is no test or quizes just write 3 3 page papers about crap. The only hard part about this class its 3hrs long and she talks to much. its very hard to fail this class because discussion question, attendance, class participation are worth more then the papers.
Great teacher and really inspiring. Transfers her anthropological and social knowledge to you and demands that you expand on it. The classes are based heavily on in class discussion and getting the demanding amounts of reading done. The topics covered in the globalization and Central American culture classes are very in depth and eye opening.
Extremely strict. Expect lots of reading/writing. Doesnt explain assignments, she is intimidating, and she grades very hard. I spend more time writing for this class than I do in all my other classes combined. Crossing my fingers for a C
Professor Tully is easily one of the best at SFSU. Her classes are hard, but I have learned more in her classes than most others. She looks intimidating, but she is more concerned about her students than most of the 'nice' teachers at SFSU. If you can, definitely one of Tully's classes!!
Prof Tullly is easily one of the best at SFSU. She expects a lot of her students, and if you actually try you will become a much better student and learn an incredible amount. Despite her tough facade, she cares more about her students than many other 'nice' professors at SFSU. If you can, I highly recommend taking one of her classes!!
One of the toughest but most knowledgable teachers I have ever had. Best advice: DO THE READINGS and participate in class discussions. I got an A in the class, but it definitely took some work. We read four books, wrote two papers, and had a group presentation. Even though there is a lot of work, you get out what you put in.
Sheila is undoubtedly the best professor at State. She challenges her students to think for themselves and become aware of the world they live in. Readings are relevant and attendance is mandatory. You truly get the grade you deserve, so if you want an A you have to put in the time and effort. I recommend taking every single class Sheila teaches.
I took her Peoples and Cultures of Central America class this past semester and let me tell you Tully is amazing! I was nervous at first to take her class because she's a little intimidating, but once I began to participate I was much more comfortable because she didn't judge anyone's opinion, rather she acknowledged it and was open minded to it.
I appreciate very much how dedicated Sheila Tully is to her profession and to educating students. She's as passionate as teachers get. Students interested in teaching should take one of her classes just to take notes!
Sheila is intelligent, drawing from a very complex background and takes her work very seriously. While I think I would like her in any other class because she's informative and smart, I did NOT like taking the GWAR with her. Constructive feedback was mostly negative, and I think the structure of the class made it disheartening. She grades HARD.
She is by far the best professor I have ever had. I learned a great deal from her. The curriculum is strenuous and time consuming, however, Dr. Tully will do everything to help. I felt like I was in 3rd grade again and wanted to impress her. My biggest fear in this class was disappointing her. PS - She is very East Coast :)
Sheila takes your education as seriously as (I hope) you do. I was struggling with finding information for my GWAR final, and she graciously pointed me in a direction that not only helped my paper, but expanded my knowledge of the subject greatly. There are less demanding teachers, but she will truly help you think like an anthropologist.
One of the best professors I have ever had! At first she may seem strict, but the more you get know her, the more compassionate she is. She pushes you to do your best and guides you in the right direction!
Long lectures and ahe gives a ton of reading. Doesnt not post anything on ilearn or write anything on the board. She talks fast and always gets off subject. DONT TAKE HER CLASS!
Tully is incapable of teaching anthropology properly. She allows her personal convictions to influence her judgement to such an extent that it is unprofessional. This includes grading, holding grudges against students, and a fascistic, uncompromising attitude towards anyone who doesn't agree with her personal opinions. Students, be forewarned.
Do not take her class if you want to pass WGS 160. Also she's not a very pleasant person to talk to.
Worst class I've ever taken. The readings were way too much and it's very difficult to take notes in her class since she doesn't write on the white board. She's very old fashioned. I did not enjoy her class at all. It was the hardest class I've ever taken.
Attitude! The class is structured in a way that allows everybody to engage. You must be interested in the material, otherwise it won't be a walk in the park. Sheila was inspiring the first couple of weeks, but after that, she seemed unapproachable. I would never take a class with her again.
This class was all about readings. All she did was review the readings, and did not take notes. Your grade will depend on a midterm, final, and a position paper. Her class is debate based. Also, there is no homework to help make up for your grade. She did not make this class interesting, and she has tons of attitude when speaking.
Her selection of material was wonderful and really good reads. However, there were so many reading, I had time for doing readings for her class only. Reading for other classes had to stay in line. 40-60 pages in articles every week+ response paper+ two books during the semester. Her attitude was the most unwelcoming I've ever experienced.
Does not except excuses, period. I live about an hour and a half away from school, and I rely on public transit to get to class. She doesn't allow ANY tardies or absences she counts ANY late arrivals as if they had skipped class altogether. Bart was down, I couldn't get to class, and what does she say? "That's not my problem, room with someone".
Tully is also an anthropology professor, so she gives a lot of anthropological viewpoints along with feminist ones. There are journals due once a week and the readings are usually heavy (2-3 long articles). Lateness is frowned upon. No extra credit whatsoever. MUST SPEAK IN CLASS or else she'll give you the death stare (jk) (no, but seriously).
There is a lot of work for this class but after taking this class, I felt like my perspective on so many different thing changed. Make sure you read and participate in class but if you're having trouble, Professor Tully is extremely helpful!
She grades ruthlessly but does not provide clear expectations or give useful feedback. Tully is combative & regularly throws students out of class who don't complete the extensive list of weekly readings. Class time is spent: listening to her talk about herself, listening to her talk about Nicaragua or listening to her talk about her activism.
Need help working on your writing skills, this class is for you. She is a difficult grader and direct of your assignments. give tips and help you go @carp. A lot of papers personal essays took a month, group presentation and do the readings have to participate. Do not be late she hates that. Kinda scary at first, if your trying she knows
Sheila Tully is actually one of the best professor's I have ever taken. She creates an environment for you to develop critical thinking skills about complex issues and how to be a better writer. She definitely does not hand out 'easy A's' she makes you work for it and on the other side you come out of it a better writer/researcher/anthropologist.
Shes a nightmare. You cant even ask her a question without her telling you that shes already answered it. As if its a crime to ask a question you missed the answer to. Too many assignments with little to NO clear instructions. She also refuses to respond to emails on certain days. As if 2020 hasnt been hard enough. I learned nothing.
I wouldnt take her class if its not a requirement. Shes very cold and condescending and doesn't like to answer questions. We read long and boring PDFs and wrote a paper on them EVERY week. Gives very unclear instructions yet expects a lot and grades tough. Didnt learn much about WGS.
If you want to have the most boring readings and lectures of your life this is the class for you. Really hard grader and gives loads of readings. Not a very kind professor. Very condescending. Would not reccommend her ever.
This class is so boring, not too difficult but the professor is so RUDE. She's a tough grader and the feedback she gives is so bad. She is not accommodating at all during the pandemic and is so pretentious. There are so many unnecessary readings and assignments. DON'T TAKE HER IF YOU CAN AVOID IT!!
I loved her class!! It's very discussion based and all discussions are based on the readings for the week! She was very uplifting and helpful during her office hours and encouraged and validated both my work and ideas. However, if the readings don't interest you or if you don't do them at all, you will have a TOUGH time in the class.
Lots of readings and goes by so slow. She's a pretty serious professor but if you put in all the work, you should be okay but the work was soooo time-consuming.
Sheila is a very inspirational professor. Her class discusses meaningful concerns about sociopolitical problems. If you have the same concerns, this class will be interesting for you. The only thing is that she doesn't grade your work and only comments on it which might stresses you out, but in the end she wasn't a tough grader so don't worry.
Sheila is the coolest professor I've had in a while; she is very passionate about the material. This course can be boring if it doesn't fully engage you, so try to put in the effort if you don't want it to be a semester long drag. I think she will like you extra if you speak up in class. Try to find a friend to do the work with.
I was really looking forward to this course going into my first semester of college, but I can now say that this was my least favorite class. When in class, she lectures for the full class. I can confidently say that I have not learned one thing in this class. So many unnecessary reading assignments. Her feedback is critical and not helpful at all.
Very boring class. The class would only be good for people who are passionate about this stuff. Not good for GE! If you can avoid this class please do. Her 'feedback' isn't helpful at all. Doesn't input grades which is stressful. Gives homework that is super time-consuming and she gives it out as if it's the only course you are taking.
I didn't learn much from this teacher and the grading policy she follows is absurd. I spent hours on one paper and followed the rubric thoroughly only to receive destructive criticism that only pointed out the flaws in my paper, Sheila had nothing good to say about the paper I spent so many hours on. Would not recommend this course or teacher.
She has a lot to say on each topic. If you love WGS then definitely take her class but if not, then do not do it. She gives a lot of reading assignments and an essay each week so be prepared to learn and work. She gives feedback on your writings each time even if she thinks it is amazing plus she loves it when students speak.
