Love this man. Great teacher, great sociologist. Highly recomend.
An ok class/teacher. No homework and I didn't open the book once all semester. Got an A just from lecture notes and class discussion alone. He loves his subject and is enthusiastic/entertaining. No final and no midterm, just a term paper and 4 tests during the semester. Not a difficult class at all.
cool guy, kinda has a dry humor but because he thinks its funny, it actually becomes funny. you never really know what your test are going to be on, but they are never hard. kinda sounds like the clear eyes guy.
great guy-don't count on leaving class early but he loves the subject.no midter,no final, no homeowrk, but his lectures and tests very difficult. Uses very big words
Thinks that everyone understands everything he is saying.Words his test very difficultly. His lectures were so long and boring.
Worst teacher ever. Boring, weird, doesnt look people in the eyes. His tests are horribly written and sometimes I dont even know what hes asking. Easy class though.

worst prof. ..boring...test make no sense....looks and sounds like CLEAR EYES commercial guy....hates people getting to class late
Took him for both Sociology and Psychology and got an A both times, so I have nothing to complain about. Enthusiastic about subject and easy to understand.

This gentlemen rocks! I took him during winter intercession and really enjoyed his class. He is clear and enthusiastic as all hell, also he's a laugh a minute. His test are not that hard, although his multiple choice questions are not as black and white as others. Those who are putting him down are doing so because of their own personal failings.
His class is boring and his tests are unclear about what they are asking or what answer he is looking for. Lot of notes but that is normal for college but occasionally he will start yelling about mail in rebates and his hate of them, how they are challenging his intelligence. A bad teacher for a relatively hard class (IMO) is a bad combo. Avoid!!
Worst teacher ever.He is boring, weird and thinks that he is funny. Always trying for humor but never succeeding. Doesn't look people in the eyes. Tests are unclear. He made everything difficult and made tons of mistakes. He can not lecture or explain himself. This class is not fun.Avoid.
He is the worst teacher I have had thus far at COC. His lectures are tedious and boring, I see no real enthusiasm. He throws in a joke every once in a while but out of those, few are actually funny. His tests are unclear, it is like he turns subjective (opinion) questions to objective ones. Good thing the essay portion is most of the test grade.
He is very funny!
I really enjoyed his class. It was very interesting and clear. He is a great teacher.
Horrible teacher. I somehow got stuck with him twice, and it was not any more fun or easier the second time around. Just trys to be funny and confuses the class with his antics.
The classwork is not hard, but his lectures are somewhat difficult to understand. The tests are hard, not understandable either.
i really didnt expect a man to teach the women's studies sociology class, but he pulled it off okay. his personality is awkward&quirky. dry sense of humor. he definitely had favorite students and i was not one of them. ur grade is mainly based on the 5 major tests. study hard because the multiple choice was confusing.
Awesome teacher. Really enjoyable, funny lectures. Really engages you! Made me major in sociology!
This teacher is the most horrible teacher I have ever had. Not only does he think that he can teach but he is a hard grader and he is soooo boring :( Do yourself a favor and just not take him.
DOnt Do It! He is a mix between Mr. Rogers and the Clear Eyes guys. This was the most boring class I have ever taken and it was a class about SEX! Only about 5 people would attend the class by the end. There are so many better SOC professors to take so DONT take him!
I liked his class a lot he explains all the information really well. His tests are hard but if you go to class and take notes you will be fine. He wants you to do well and is easy going. i would recommend him.
Horrible teacher. Very hard grader. Useless waste of time.
HE's a Great Teacher, very funny in my opion, i'm very intersted in learning from him, and i'm an average student who rather be out doing something else. if you pay attendtion as well actually go to class its not diffcult at all,
This teacher taught me a love for Sociology. I was expecting this to be a boring class filled with statistics and charts. But, he brought this science to life for me.
Knows his stuff when it comes to Sociology. Has a very monotone voice that can definitely put people to sleep. Tests are hard / confusing, and make up most of your overall grade. Tough grader on research papers, etc.
he is a horrible teacher!!! i did not learn a thing he does not know what he is talking about and grades horribly. I got a B doing my very best not worth all the work for the grade. Do not take him if you want an A!
This teacher is very dry, dull and boring kind of reminds me of Ben Stein how he talks. I failed this class and then retook it with a different teacher and got an A.
I was very interested in taking Sociology. Mr. H is the coolest and funniest teacer i have ever met. I loved his class. I wish more students engaged themselves and opened their minds to this class and many other classes. You are the coolest Mr. H.
Material in this class is pretty interesting, changed my outlook on a lot of things. Mr. Helfing is pretty laid back, but sometimes hard to follow in lectures. Make sure to read the textbook carefully. His tests include specific details from the reading and lectures. Also group project and book report in class. Make sure to study a lot for tests!
i didnt even try in this class and somehow got a B, i literally slept in class or played with my ipod...if you know how to write rhetoric on essays then you can pass this class no problem....i blew off the scantron part of the test because i knew i would pass with just the essay questions....if you want a boring but easy teacher get him
Helfing is A GREAT TEACHER, hes very easy. I attended class half the time and the other half I left early. Theres only four tests one group project and a few assignments. I got a d on three tests and a c on the other and passed with An average B. I highly recommend him!
I took his 110 class and to be honest, he can be dull at times but other times i'm cracking up laughing! tests are easy, never studied, always passed. 4 total tests. 4 field assignments and a group presentation. very easy. love you helfing!
I took Soc 101 with him. BORING. but EASY. He's really monotone but if you do all of your work and study, you'll be fine because he's not really a hard grader and his tests are too hard either. Understanding about absences as well. I can also say that he does know what he's talking about and at times it can become interesting and funny.
Awesome
This professor just throws definition after definition, he doesn't explain things he gives exam's which he keeps doesn't return them back to the people of the class. To use them as a study tool "I will never take another class with this instructor" he makes the exams harder than they need to be. I can't wait for this class to end!
Shel is an AMAZING teacher. If you have a sense of humor and enjoy learning legitimately helpful information with a highly intelligent and enthusiastic teacher, take any of his classes.
This teacher is boring, BORING. He does not know what he is talking about. He is a hard grader. Save yourself and do not take him as a teacher.
SUPER easy teacher. Didn't have to study for any test and really easy grader for the book report. Left class early everyday and passed with a B. I highly recommend.
Anyone who says Shel is boring or hard is a dope. Super easy, easy going, very clear, and highly intelligent. He was so patient with my class that had the rudest girls in it. If you attend class and pay attention you will not only pass, but actually learn and have fun. :)
I dont know why people say hes boring. Hes actually pretty funny. I took this class with Wiallams-Paez and didnt understand sociology one bit. But Helfing explained it very clearly. Hes a cool guy.
Prof. Helfing's like a cross between Snape and Jim Carry--though at first you would totally not expect his sense of humor. He honestly cares about his students, and if you ask him for assistence, he will give it to you. I'd highly recommend him, plus his tests aren't specific to newest edition, and you can find the book in the library. :)
He is a nice guy. If you ask for help he is there for you. Easy to understand. English is my second language and I have an A in his class. He makes it fun. Good man!.
Professor Helfing is very nice, funny, and helpful. He will answer all your questions and accommodate you to help your grade out. Highly recommend!!!
Such a fun person to be around! Terribly funny, extremely nice, enthusiastic, and leads the class in great discussions. His tests are very easy if you just prepare.
He is a nice man and a wealth of knowledge, yet he is out of touch and a little dated. He doesn't use Blackboard and has trouble responding to emails. Test grading is not fair.
Great professor! Highly recommend "Shel." No trick questions, most all test questions can be found in the study guide and readings. Extra credit opportunities are available for those wiling to take the time to do so. The class included 4 field assignments that I learned a lot from. Great sense of humor and very understanding.
Easy class and easy to understand. only a few papers and he offers extra credit. His tests are hard and wordy. Prepare for the test by studying vocabulary and read the book. Overall fun class, hard test, and awesome and funny professor.
He offered multiple (essentially unlimited) chances for extra credit, making it simple to get the grade you want. The tests come straight from the notes and books, the former of which he cover in class, daily, and makes learning very entertaining.
Easy class and easy to understand. only a few papers and he offers extra credit. His tests are hard and wordy. Prepare for the test by studying vocabulary and read the book. Overall fun class, hard test, and awesome and funny professor. (I previously enter this comment, uncorrectly, under SOCI 101, which I did not take)
Don't take this class. It is completely useless to your education. The entire class is really simple and has no academic value, but the tests are super hard and wordy! Not fair at all. Shel is whatever, but the class is pointless.
Professor Helfing is a nice guy, don't get me wrong. But his class is kind of tough. You really have to study from the book and from his lectures. His tests are tricky. Just complete all of your assignments on time and study for the tests and you should be fine.
Great instructor. Very relaxed & funny. Doesn't exert control over disruptive students. Very helpful & personable. Exams somewhat difficult however & require studying ®ular attendance to do well. Would take him again & highly recommend him.
Very interesting class. Mr. Helfing is very nice and humorous. He likes to show us video clips and comics. Comments and questions are always encouraged for class discussion. I recommend reading ahead in the text book, taking notes on the lecture, and attending every class. Tests are challenging. Take this class. It is interesting, fun, and relevant
VERY EXTREMELY BORING. His tests are very difficult because they are both text and lecture based. the text is just difficult to read without falling asleep and the lectures are hard to sit through. The only reason the easiness is a 3 is because he has other assignments and great extra credit assignments to boost your grade.
If you read the book and listen during the lectures, the tests are not too difficult. He also has a website that has all the definitions and practice exams. I read the book, listened in class, and did the practice exams and my lowest test grade was an 88. He also uses a lot of visual aids, videos, and tries to engage students. Extra credit too!
Mr. Helfing is great. He is hilarious, but his lectures can be a little monotonous so you have to try harder to pay attention. Tests are a little tricky, but the other assignments are graded pretty easily. He also offers tons of extra credit. If you come to class and read the textbook you should do great! I'd recommend taking his class
Mr. Helfing's women's studies class was great. His lectures are entertaining but have a lot of information that can appear on his tests. I loved his dry humor and sarcasm. It really makes him stand out as a professor. Too bad I'm transferring soon, because I'd love to take another class with him. He's a really awesome professor.
People will say he is boring, but I think it depends the type of person you are. You just have to pay attention and it will be all good. The tests are hard, long lectures, and essays to be done. He did assign extra credit, so take advantage of those. He really tries his best to make class enjoyable and I applaud him for that. The lectures are great
Make sure you listen to lectures test are based on his lectures
The funniest guy ever. Pay attention in class and you should be fine. Oh, and get the textbook. It's the questions that are found in the textbook that will trip you up on tests.
Hes really funy
Mr. Helfing is funny and friendly, although his exams can be very difficult. The exams are based from the reading material and his lectures, so even though he doesn't take roll it is still a good idea to attend if for that reason alone. He gives a couple of projects a semester. I would recommend him as a choice if you can't get your favorite prof.
Mr. Helfing is a funny professor and good person. However his test are pretty hard and never once did we use the book. Out of the 4 test there was only one question out of the book. All we do in his class is learn vocabulary words. His written part of the test are semi-hard.. But it's the multi-choice that is hard. There is no study guide.
I am a very right brain type of person which does not agree with Shel's style. He is very definition and lecture heavy. If that works for you, easy class and you will have a good time. But if you are like me, skip him. Way too lecture focused and the king of definitions. Not a bad professor just totally not for me.
He is a really chill and mellow spirited guy try's to make jokes some aren't funny ;however, he try's really hard to make the class interesting , and he offers tremendous amounts of extra credit
what makes him hilarious is that he thinks his jokes are funny XD . The tests are okay, it is multiple choice and 3 Discussion Q's. you don't really need the book but I thought it was helpful to study. He gives a lot of extra credit too:)
I took his class in the Winter and this was my first college sociology class and it was very interesting. His exams are very hard, so make sure that you study a lot for his exams. I don't recommend any student to take his SOC 101 class during the winter because there is something due, plus an exam every week. His lectures are very monotone.
A real Philosophy Professor!!! Love him and will take again! Intelligent, funny and a bit corny... over all marvelous!! You got to pay attention and you'll learn a lot!!!
Professor Helfing is very nice. He keeps his lectures interesting with videos and makes corny jokes. To pass his class, just follow his instructions and study for the tests. He offers great study tools on his website, use them! He also offers different kinds of extra credit.
This class is so easy. If you read the book or just kind skim through it you'll do great. EASY EASY A
He is a great professor! I would always get excited to go to his class he is very understanding, have a dry sense of humor that would make the class laugh ,he deeply cares about his students passing and wants to make sure everyone understands the lecture. Take him! You only do two easy essay papers, three exams, and essay presentation.
All you have to do to pass is pay attention during lectures and do well on exams and you'll be golden. You can get away with not showing up sometimes and still get a good grade. He's got kind of an oddball sense of humor. The aforementioned exams are difficult though.
I took two classes with Sheldon, SOCI 101 and 103. His voice is a bit monotone, but he tries very hard to make lecture fun. He shows a lot of video examples and provides discussion questions. All of the vocab/lecture notes are on his website. He's very understanding, and provides MANY extra credit opportunities. Show up and you'll be fine.
Attendance was part of your grade, but he passes around a role sheet at the beginning of class to sign. You can leave after. For lectures he just gives definitions which are found on his websites. You could get a B on all the tests if you make notecards of the definitions and just study those. There are other assignments and a lot of extra credit.
Tests are not definitions, you need to make sure you know the applications of the terms. They were pretty hard, so make sure you study. Extra credit is offered to raise your grade up 4%. It was a little boring (I did the summer session) but he was kinda funny sometimes.
I think my experience was put down a bit since I took this as a three hour night class. Basically, he lectured the entire three hours. He would put up a definition, talk about it for ten minutes, then put up another. It gets kind of painful after awhile. I feel bad because I think he tries to make it interesting by throwing in a joke or two....
Professor Helfing is a great teacher. The lecture talks that he gives are exactly what will be on the test so pay attention to what he says. He is a funny professor who will answer any questions that you may have. He offers lots of extra credit, and has 4 fun field assignments that you can do. The person below was using his phone in class.
If you're going to take sociology this is definitely the best professor to take it with! Such an eye opening class that's an easy A
Straightforward course, wonderful material!
Prof Helfing is such a sweet and caring person. but prof wise, not the best. his lectures are extremely boring and he uses VHS for media examples. He has his own website with everything he uses for class. i dont like his test because he words thing difficult and confusing but as long as you do the work and put effort you should be fine.
Professor Helfing wants to make his class engaging and fun, but he really struggles as his lectures get very boring. His tests are very challenging and involve a lot of conceptualizing. He offers 4% extra credit which can really help your grade. Maintain a B average on tests, do the HW and Extra credit and you should be able to get an A.
I would give this professor a 0 rating if I could! He was extremely monotone and would make terrible jokes while randomly slamming his fist on his desk. His tests were extremely confusing and his true false were literally impossible. Our first test, not a single person got an A on the exam. Attendance was oddly graded and you can't get 100%.
His voice was so monotone, I feel bad because he would throw in a joke or two and i feel like he really wanted to make the class interesting, but woman studies is just such a boring topic when taught by him. I could not stand having to sit in that class room for an hour and half! IT WAS HORRIBLE. Also, his tests make no sense at all.
I took his sociology 101 class online recently and I would never take a class with this professor again. He assigns LOTS of busy work, takes forever to grade assignments and grades very harshly, gives no feedback, and when I emailed him he would respond back rudely.
As an online class the work was manageable & the tests were fine. Helfing grades super tough & does not give feedback. I got an 80% on the discussion post where we had to introduce ourselves? That's how hard he grades. The extra credit really helps. Include definitions and use the concepts in your answers. The 2 projects were okay, just write a lot
Thoroughly enjoyed this class! Professor is passionate and organizes online class very well. Stays very true to his rubrics so you know what to expect when you are being graded. Many chances for extra credit. Discussions are important. Doesn't give a lot of feedback but responds to emails very quickly and grades quickly as well.
I was so excited to take this class. It was all online and no textbook, and an interesting subject - I had high hopes. I am a good student. I do not mind working for my grades. But there was NO guidance. I followed his requirements and NEVER got full credit. Ask for help and get a vague dismissive response. He was awful. Good luck.
NO guidance, extremely unclear grading criteria. has high expectations but does not leave comments/feedback and seemed non existent/unprofessional. DONT recommend for online at all. He does not give full credit for any assignment. Discussion board is half your grade and requires ALOT of writing! contact him and get vague, uncaring responses
Gives no feedback on discussions but never gives anyone 100%. Lots of reading but at a certain point if you skim it will be fine. Did not like exams. Like 20 mc questions then 4 free response but only 40 min to do it. Absolutely ridiculous. Got an A and I took him for two dif classes do not rec unless remaining profs are trash.
Although I didn't do amazing in this class, he was an amazing teacher! He was always very understanding and caring. Honestly, all we really had to do was discussion posts and exams which were all pretty easy. You watch videos and answer questions for the discussion and respond to your classmates which is mandatory! I recommend this class 100%!
Quizzes are timed and include multiple choice, true/false and 3 essay questions. I found it difficult to answer the essay questions thoughtfully and construct good parpagraphs due to the time constraint. This professor likes to see that your putting in the effort.
I've never dropped a class faster in my life. If you're trying to keep a high GPA, don't take this class. Even if you complete all of the criteria for his assignments, he will NOT give you full credit unless you go "above and beyond," whatever that means. Save yourself a headache and avoid this guy.
I asked him when something was due and he said I don't know.
If you're good at taking tests & want relatively easy credit, take this class. Otherwise, I wouldn't. He's not very tech savvy and his lectures felt boring & pointless. His tests can be really hard since his MCs ask about super specific/random info. Many discussion boards that are worth a lot (50%). Had to crank out a lot of unfulfilling writing.
A tough grader with unclear grading criteria. No textbook, he provides readings and videos. You have a discussion post and two replies every week, lots of writing. Difficult and nonsensical tests, multiple choice with an open response question at the end, start with the written answer then go back for the rest and just guess if the time's up.
