Horrible teacher! ruined my psychology GPA! I took his psy 101 course and got a C because he never showed up for a test, and decided to average tests up until that point for our grade! He is very condescending to any student that asks to speak to him after class, and does not show any respect for his students. DONT TAKE HIM! I wish I'd known better
Helms does not suffer fools. If you want to get an interesting lecture and use what you learn, he is a great instructor. If you want to be spoon-fed. slack, or have it easy, find a different teacher, because he won't let you make up work because you were too lazy to do it. However, if you have an honest emergency, I don't know a more caring guy.
As much as I would like to point out all of the negative aspects of his teaching and personality, I won't. I think his parents pretty much owned him enough by naming him Sheldon.
I've taken 3 classes with Sheldon now,Psy101, 112, and 115. He's an interesting professor with tons of funny personal anecdotes to help aid learning. He's a fair teacher. People who wish to screw around all the time will get shafted. His tests are easy to prepare for (he tells you essay topics prior to test). If you wish to learn, take sheldon.
The truth: 1. take good notes in class, 2. read key terms in textbook, 3. Good Grammar, 4. follow his directions to the word, 5.answer essay questions with more detail than he asks for, 6. memorize definitions of key words, 7. Be careful which topic you choose for course paper. That said his lectures are engaging and fun, I was never bored in class
fun!!! super easy!!! one of the best class decisions ive made at ohlone, i love sheldon so much!!!!!!!!!!!!! everyone should take this class
Helms is awesome. Tough grader, but super interesting. He is really knowledgable about this subject, and really gave me some awesome insight to psychology. Made me want to learn more! Plus, he's got some major humor skilles.
if you go to ohlone, this is a must take teacher!!! u will not regret this!!! SUPER EASY!!!!! by far the easiest A ive gotten at ohlone, juss attend lecture and ull do great, besides lectures are engaging ull want to go!!!!
he's lectures are interesting however he is a hard grader, test are hard, semester paper is ridiculously hard.. i suggest a different teacher, easy D! i dont think he will fail you
Had him for the Summer term. I found the class to be pretty easy. Just know the terms, and you'll do alright on the tests. The short essay portions aren't bad at all, because he tells you the topics beforehand. Lectures were entertaining; the time passed by really quickly in there. Why is there a character limit on this site? How ridiculous.
i liked his class alot until i received my grade. he is engaging and funny. sometimes rude to questions asked. dont understand how i got a B. he is a slow grader on course paper.
he's fun and his classes are hella interesting. if u take his class u should go to class because some stuff's not in the textbook. make sure u read the textbook too. overall he's good but his tests are a little bit confusing so u need to understand everything. again, he's really fun
I can't believe this guy doesn't have a chili! I always looked forward to this class and felt I learned a lot of things I could apply to life. His stories are also very entertaining. I remember him saying that he's stricter with his psych101 classes and more personal with the smaller psych sections.
I love this class! It's the one class I look forward twice a week. Helms makes it so easy to learn Psychology because he takes it on a personal level and makes it entertaining with anecdotal stories("gossip" hehe). Sometimes during his lectures I can't help but laugh out loud hehe. For any future Psych majors I recommend this class.<3
The best psyc teacher you can have. He is clear and hilarious in class. He humor during class make psyc extremely interesting. The way he teaches is commendable and if you just do all the reading and take note, there is no way you can fail.
I really enjoyed his class. I was a lil worried abt taking him for 101 because I slacked off in 115, but im glad I did! Participate in class he loves that! Read the book it'll help for the tests, and attend the lecture at least for the fact that he's funny and very passionate about psychology and teaching.
He is a great teacher and his class is the easiest I have ever taken. He made the class entertaining. That being said, he is extreamly arrogant and can't EVER admit when he's wrong, even if it is at the expense of your grade.
He is a good teacher and is very entertaining. He is obviously enthusiastic about his profession and deeply involved in his field. However, I found him to be somewhat full of himself. I wish he would tone it down a notch cause it greatly detracts from his overall quality as it is hard to respect someone who comes across pompous.
He is both rude and narcissistic. Stay clear of him unless you are volunteering for a mental smack down. He complains every time some little thing dose not go his way and has no problem shutting people down by the most inconsiderate means possible if he dose not want to talk about something.
You must have the ability to write well, and articulately if you want to do well in this class. His teaching style consists of powerpoint/lecture. This is how it will be every single class! He keeps contact with students through a psych blog which you should check regularly. :] If you can write decent essays you will at least get a B in this class.
Good professor. His class was very interesting. Fair grader on essay, and course paper. But if you want to get good grade in the class, you should participate. Although I attend every single class meeting, he still gave me 70/100 on my participation point. Overall, He is really good teacher. Highly recommend, but remember to participate!!!!
This guy is really full of himself. He does not suffer investigative questioning, nor is he capable of admitting ignorance. Don't take him; there are other more capable teachers at this school.
I truly believe this teacher requires more cowbell to be a truly successful academic entity. He tends to ramble, going rather far off topic, and one good way to get a decent grade in his class is to stand up before a test and do a little butt wiggle.
Helms is very passionate about psychology and he'll express that in his class and in the way he teaches. He comes off as arrogant only because when he's sure, he's very sure of what he's saying. Other than that, his class is very enjoyable and interesting. Just be sure to study for his tests and start your course paper early.
He is funny, and entertaining when he teaches. Cool guy, just dont get on his bad side. He is very very organized and detail oriented so you better have good writing skills. One course paper and alot of tests. READING IS A MUST for the tests... Not bad.
I take every class I can with this professor. This is not an easy teacher, and you will work hard for your grade. He has a deep understanding of various subdisciplines within psychology and keeps you on your toes. He's willing to work with his students. An excellent professor for those who are serious about/love psychology (for academic or career).
I have taken Psych 115 (abnormal) and psych 112 (experimental) with this professor. I received an 'A' in both. Yes, he is challenging, and that's part of the reason why I retook him! Do you want an easy professor that teaches you nothing? It's all about putting in the effort and participating in class.
He comes across as arrogant. Although, I'm not quite convinced this is such a bad thing if you actually do know what your talking about.. Go to class and read the book (do your part!) and you'll more than likely get a good grade. I highly recommend his class!
Took this class summer before senior year of hs. Found the class very easy and he is a fair grader. Tests are multiple choice and very straightforward. You get the essay questions beforehand too. Hardly read book, just make sure to take notes in lecture and study from there. Started term paper hours before due date and still got 100 on it =D.
I took him for General Psych just this past summer, you'll learn a lot if you pay attention. You have to put in effort to his class, but I'm pretty sure if you take his notes, pay attention, & read the chapters assigned. You'll do well. His tests are mainly DEFINITIONS. His term paper was quite wasy, overall ended up with a B. Hes helpful as well.
Prof. Helms is a pretty good professor. Hes very clear when it comes to key points in general psychology. His class is not hard, but it is not easy either. TAKE NOTES. I personally do not agree with some of his personal beliefs but we're all the same in the classroom. Highly Recom. for Psych 101
Summer term. Social psychology. Lectures were informative. Tests had short answer portions. Read the textbook before attending the lectures; note the key terms. There is an essay as well. I learned a lot. My only gripe: He refused to return our essays. One could get a B on the term paper, and never understand why. Looks like Aaron Eckheart.
admittedly HATES Abnormal Psych and has the class "teach" the entire semester. Tests do not relate to material in class - my ONLY D ever !
Be ready for a lot of memorization. students lead most of the discussion you will learn a lot test are horrible to understand
Arrogant professor. He looks like Jim Carrey. His lectures are very entertaining, but he is HARD!!! I had an A in psychology when I was in high school, but I had to drop his class because it was seriously hard. I even read all the chapters, but I still got low grade in his tests. He wants a lot of details in his tests and is a tough grader.
Sheldon is one of the best n coolest teachers I've ever had. I don't understand the comments here at all. He's only sarcastic or seemingly arrogant when people ask stupid or ignorant things. He def knows his stuff very well and is so passionate about it. Tests are super easy as long as you take notes on the ppts and write out both essay questions!
As a teacher, he's great. I had him for 101 and purposefully took him again for Abnormal. Unfortunately, 3/4 of the semester is taught by students, that means boring ppts. Otherwise, hilarious teacher who's clearly knowledgeable n passionate about his subject. He GIVES you 2 possible essay questions, tests are super easy if you write em out nstudy
If you want a B in the class, take lecture notes. If you want an A in the class, read the book. Great grasp on what is being taught. I hope for an A, though I hope I didn't realize the necessity of the textbook too late... don't repeat my mistake. Amazing class. Amazing professor. He makes psychology intriguing.
Very polite, boisterous, smart, funny, friendly, outgoing,light-hearted, daring, enjoyable, playful, outgoing, honest, bold, unpretentious, loose, relaxed, easygoing, gracious, interesting,dignified,free-spirited, in-tune, together, pleasant, wise, joyous, grateful, sorrowful, happy, spirited, competent, capable, non-judgemental, fearless, flowing, cool
The lectures are fun and entertaining. Prof Helms truly knows his stuff, and provides a blog if your interested in learning more on a topics. I have personally found him to be quite inspirational. If you can't handle his class & your a Psych major, come up with a new career goal!
I was hoping Abnormal Psych would be fun...I like Sheldon as an instructor...he's funny and informative, however, he had the class present each chapter out of the book throughout the semester. He would make comments here and there...but otherwise, this class is pretty much useless.
Very hard teacher, needs to fully understand the material so you have to read deeply into the textbook before tests. You'll find his teaching to be intriguing if you like psychology. If you have some interest in the subject than take him but don't take him if you don't have to...
Words do not describe how much i dislike Sheldon Helms as a person. His teaching style is awful (expect a powerpoint presentation EVERY day), his lectures are offensive in so many ways, and he ruined my passion for psychology. Take psychology, and enjoy it. Just don't take it from Helms. He's horrible.
I do not like Professor Helms. I do not like how he teaches, I do not like how he responds to questions, and I generally think he is a HORRIBLE teacher. Many of my fellow students share this opinion, everyone I talk to about Helms says he's an arrogant know-it-all. To be honest, I think half of these positive ratings are him. Wouldn't be surprising
this guy is my least favorite professor at ohlone. he dropped my grade from a (very) solid "a" to a "b" just because he doesn't like me. his "attendance grade" accounts for 20% of the class grade, and he makes it up on the spot. WHAT A JOKE!
I like professor helms. His powerpoint slides are interesting and colorful. His tests are straightforward. He also tells you what questions/info would be on a test. You would have to read the chapters and go to his lectures but besides that... no homework. attendance is "mandatory," he doesn't take roll. that's a good thing!
He's a great professor. Only thing is write a good paper. Mostly multiple choice w essay tests. Read the book, email him any questions you have and he'll explain until you understand, go to his lectures! Remember the info he keeps repeating and for the tests there's always these little lines in the book he puts as test questions.. true or false.
Professor Helms is a terrific teacher. He is also the adviser for the Psychology Club, and that got me not only interested in psychology, but OBSESSED with it! I learned so much in his classes, and I'm now a psych major. Plus, the club was a blast!
Professor Helms is hilarious! If you want to laugh while you learn, take his class. He managed to keep all 100+ of us laughing and having a good time throughout the entire semester. I didn't get a perfect grade, but I learned aLOT!
I'm not really sure why anyone would give Professor Helms a horrible rating... I just took him for summer and I thought he was just great. Lectures were packed with humor and info. No surprises on exams. I agree, he's a tough grader on essays, but this is college. Just attend lecture, read the book, and check the blog. Straightforward stuff.
SP'10 got A. He lectures 1/4 of course & students do the rest. Tests every 2-4 chapters with essays but gives prompts prior. Test are 80% book, 15% lecture, 5% random. Final changes yearly, mine was essay on choice of disorder. Grade is on % so it's ok if you get a few Cs on tests but do well on other stuff - student lecture, 4 blog posts.
He is very mean/ rude. He doesn't have time to talk to his students even if you are trying to see him in his office.
Helms is the BEST psych teacher! He is so passionate about psych, his lectures are very interesting, fun and clear. He is a tough grader so read your book, take lots of notes. Writing both essays helps you study and gives you a greater chance for a good grade. I loved his class and I really like him ( but at the beginning I was so scared of him)
He's funny, interesting, and can teach pretty well. BUT he's not a good professor. He doesn't care about the students. He's just there to teach. Not there to help us. I'd take his class, but don't expect him to try to help you out when you need it. He's known to be the really selfish and cocky fancy boy.
He is an awesome teacher. He keeps you engaged through the entire class and makes even psychology pretty plain. All these people saying he is mean or whatever... he just doesn't put up with mess. Take his class if you want to learn not if you want to play around. But, he makes science fun and interesting. If you are thinking of taking his class
He's a great teacher but you will have to study hard on his class ;)
Mr. Helms is a really tough grader (He also gives a lot of tests). I really liked his class even though I didn't get a great grade...he shows a lot of power points and is pretty entertaining, but be prepared to work for your grade.
He is hypocritical. He complains about how few people have a basic understanding of science yet he doesn't really do a good job of teaching critical thinking. He just tells a lot of opinions especially on his blog. His lectures are entertaining though. He is obsessed about grammar so make sure you can write well.
He goes over the chapters through powerpoint and does it very quickly. But he also lectures which are very entertaining. That's how you learn the concepts, by remembering the stories he relates. He grades somewhat hard though so make sure you're doing the work and studying. But overall, he makes the class fun and interesting.
One of the best teachers I've had. He adds humor to the lectures to keep you interested and will tell a joke if he see's the class starting to get bored. He explains the lessons clearly and adds examples that are current with what's going on in the world. Overall he's amazing, one of the only classes I enjoyed that semester.
good teacher. Pretty interesting lectures that cover each chapter. Six tests are somewhat difficult but doable if you study. there is info on tests that he didnt lecture about but that was in the reading so make sure to read the chapters!
If your interested in psychology i would suggest you take most of the classes he teaches. he is very knowledgeable in his field and his lectures are highly entertaining. I have never been so excited to attend a class before. His test are a little hard and he does have an essay, but he gives you the questions before hand. So just study & your good!
The class is very interesting and he is a very clear speaker. However, it is a difficult class to get an A in. If you're applying to a prestigious university, he will prepare you for it, but may hurt your chances of getting into it.
Very helpful professor. Took 2 of his classes this semester and psych 101 last semester. He keeps you entertained throughout the class, is clear, and helpful. If you get a good grade on his projects and study for his tests you will be fine. His tests are tricky, but he posts essay questions on his blog. READ the book, or you'll fail tests.
I thought he was very entertaining and very informative, so long as you understood that it was a proper college course, and took the rules and guidelines seriously. People seem to complain about his tests and term paper, but so long as you scan the book and pay attention to the lectures, it really should not be that awful.
I highly recommend this class. He keeps the class very interesting and funny. There is never any homework and only one research paper. He can be strict with some things and grades a little tough on the test essays but as long as you study you should be fine. Most of test questions are from lectures. I loved this class.
He is passionate about his field and that shows in his lectures. he is pretty laid back about certain things and strick about others he never gives homework but expects you to study for tests and quizzes and works with you on the course paper. Take this class if your an Ohlone Student
I loved the class. It was really difficult, and he expects a lot, but if you do the work you'll be okay. Helms is very narcissistic, so if you can't handle that don't bother. But I thought he was hilarious. Reminds me of Sheldon Cooper from TBBT.
Best class ever! Super interesting and never boring because Sheldon is hilarious. Must take if you attend Ohlone, definitely one of the best professors.
SHELDON IS AWESOME! GO! SHELDON-ISM! If you want to learn about psychology take his class! You may conform and major/minor in psychology! Jokes apart...Sheldon believes in spreading Critical Thinking, and everyone should take his class before they transfer out!
Helms for me is one of those brutally honest people that keeps you grounded. Quick facts: there's no homework, you grade is based on participation(20%), course paper(30%) 6 midterms (30%) and a final (20%) It's essential that you ace the paper for an A. The paper is to analyze a psychological disorder. Great professor, won't be a piece of cake tho
pros: keeps things interesting, good lecturer. cons: he makes sure everyone is aware of his standpoint on very controversial topics, so be prepare to be insulted. he also gives some false information and cannot tolerate it if people correct him. he thinks very highly of himself. however, i recommend this class because he is interesting
HELMS, You are my favorite teacher in the whole wide world! You are so hilarious! And so clever! You're class is awesome, and I learn so much from your lectures! I am very glad I took your class, and I look forward to taking more of them! -A
Love you Mr. helms! you're hilarious and a great teacher!I'm glad i took your class this year :)
Professor Helms is a great professor. He's very clear about the topics he covers in class, and he's very passionate about psychology. He may be a tad harsh because he is very opinionated, but he is willing to answer any question asked and does not hesistate to provide extra credit. Just pay attention and study and you'll do fine!
He's a totally funny guy and makes Psychology fun to learn, but he will be condescending to you and make you feel stupid if you ask him questions he says he already answered. Tests are kind of hard and you need to read the book and do the course paper. He also teels lots of personal stories, but I recommend taking this class.
You MUST read the book. His tests are half multiple choice but your grade will rely on the essay part and can super hard if you don't keep up with the readings/lectures!! He does not help you throughout the semester, so don't bother asking him questions. There's one course paper worth pretty much your grade. If you fail that you fail the class...
Extremely funny guy, I laughed hard several times each lecture and always looked forward to class. His tests are straightforward, as long as you read the book very carefully. He doesn't cover everything in class, so the book is a must; however it's a really good book.
one word to describe him, AWESOME. he's hilarious, interesting, and super kind. Not an easy class but not a hard class. i don't understand why he has bad reviews. it's your job as a college student to work for your grade. if you read the book and follow the syllabus, you will succeed.
Crazy and very unapproachable. He'll shoot you down and make you question your exsistence if you ask a simple question. He looks like Harvey Dent from Batman. He's funny though, just pay attention. Don't speak. And read the book. You'll feel like clapping after each lecture.
Helms is not an easy teacher, and hes biased. sometimes he says there are evident of things while there are not! He can be interesting but he thinks that he knows everything. He focuses on his favorite topics even if they are not related to the psychology textbook, and I felt like he tries to make other students to have the same opinions as him.
Hes hard, but all that hard work makes you really learn alot. So if you want to stumble blindly through college and not learn anything, don't take Sheldon, but if you're here for an education, take Sheldon, he'll make sure you learn something, but you have to try.
Professor is definitely interested in what he's teaching and keeps the class interesting even on the more boring days. Tests do included short essay portions and the class paper is a bit hard, but there's no regular work and notes are easy to take. The book is somewhat covered on tests, but you can still pass without it.
Professor Helms is amazing. I can not see how anyone could not appreciate how well he teaches. He was very clear on every topic in text book. I wish all if the professors were more like him. Keep up the amazing job and I look forward in meeting with you again......
I don't get why people say Helms is hard. His teaching style is very simple and clear. His test questions are directly from the lecture. Just read the book and know the material. He is also clear on exactly what he wants on assignments (even though it makes him sound anal). Work hard, and he's easy.
He is very very opinionated to say the least. If you are religious at all and are sensitive you may want to reconsider having this guy. He is a TOUGH grader on papers. YOU HAVE TO READ THE TEXT BOOK, because he doesn't go over everything in class because there isn't enough time and because he often goes of on hilarious tangents.
With Mr. Helms, you get what you give. If you ask for help, he will give it. If you don't want to talk to him because he's opinionated, that's your own limitation/fault! He is VERY clear and straightforward. I've taken 4 classes with him and loved every minute of them. If you can't follow his CLEAR instructions, you won't cut it at a 4-year!
Mr. Sheldon was a fabulous teacher. He had great energy, passion for the subject & a solid work ethic. Lectures are interesting and he uses related stories to the topics. Test are based off lecture AND book. The Course paper was difficult because of the level of thinking.I received an "A" on paper and that was my semester grade. Study, learn, pass.
VERY FUNNY and has a good sense of humor!! He knows what he's teaching and he's really good at it! Classes aren't mandatory but make sure you pass the quizzes and homework. There isn't a meeting I didn't laugh at his jokes! Very cool prof!!
Definitely NOT an easy A. 5 chapter exams, a take home test, a final and a 5 page course paper. Quick tips: read each chapter in the book thoroughly and daily; follow his instructions; start the course paper as early as possible (you'll thank me later); and make flashcards! Overall, Helms is a great professor.
Helms is a funny, interesting guy he always managed to keep me paying attention in class which is good however, he is a TOUGH grader. Expect to fail. It kind of sucks that he is so anal when it comes to grading otherwise he probably would have been my favorite teacher.
Very funny and keeps class lectures interesting by using examples or references that are both funny and relevant. He grades fairly, sometimes even grades easily but I guess it depends on how well you show your knowledge about the class material. APA format lessons helped me out a lot and could do them without having to use Google.
Take a dif prof. Self-centered and won't take time to help. If you try to ask something out of class you only get a smart aleck response. Tests from book 90%, lectures 10%. Memorize vocab. Write term paper early. Tests are easy if you study hard but i really dont recommend him for psych 101.
This guy is something else.
Helms is probably the best teacher I have ever taken. Though the only thing is his tests are really hard only because the lecture notes aren't enough and you have to actually read the text book. He is really funny and makes learning this stuff really enjoyable. I highly recommend taking this class, even if psychology isnt your thing, it's worth it
I loved this class, my favorite one so far! He is very informative, clear and entertaining. He is very opinionated yet funny and lectures are really enjoyable. Assignments consist of 6 tests, a 5 page term paper and of course a comprehensive final. I found class easy and I would definitely recommend him! Follow directions and you will be fine.
Sheldon is an amazing professor at Ohlone. You must take him before you graduate or transfer out from Ohlone College. I took his Abnormal Psych and it was really fun with great information. Also, he's really funny. He will make sure that class is not bored. Read the book, handouts, do all your E-Journals, don't miss any class, and participate!
My absolutely favorite professor! Very inspiring and knowledgable. I have learn a lot from his lectures, and would highly recommend his classes.
If you plan on failing then this is the class for you.
You NEED your book for this class as every test, including lecture notes, are directly from the pages. Don't expect to get extra help outside of class unless you carefully word your question. Besides that, just do the reading you have to do and you should be fine.
Sheldon's lectures are engaging, funny, and he's not hesitant at all to provide stories from his life as examples! Go over both the notes and the book to give yourself the best chance on getting a good grade on his tests. Don't procrastinate the research paper and if he provides an opportunity for you to help your grade: TAKE IT!
Sheldon is an awesome teacher. He's funny and knows how to maintain your attention. Although sassy , he genuinely wants to help. A lot of note taking. The hardest part of his class is passing the tests. He gets 98% of test questions from the book. So be prepared. Only two or three homework assignments. I'd take his class again!!!
I wanted to be a psychology major unitll i had him as a teacher.
He was an awesome professor with very interesting lectures. I have to admit that a majority of my learning was from reading the book myself, but his lectures cover at least half of each chapter and he usually covers the parts that are harder to understand. Overall, not an easy A. Tests were hard, but pretty fair to be honest. Grades hard on writing
Sheldon Helms is an amazing professor. He'll have you at the edge of your seat laughing with his hilarious jokes. He teaches through power points the whole class time but they're amazing lectures and he provides many memorable examples. Your grade is based on participation, tests, and one major paper. I just wish he wasn't so anal about grading.
He's fantastic and really funny but very tough and does not accept anything late
Helms is great at explaining the most difficult of concepts. His lectures are always interesting. I failed his class because lecture tests were difficult because it involved multiple choice (easy) & an essay (hard). The worst part was the movie project which I failed in bc my writing wasn't up to his standards. I retook class with citron n passed.
Professor Helms was very hilarious with his lectures and that's the part that makes his class amazing. You have to show up for his class in order to get participation credit. He is a tough grader on the course paper. The tests are okay, not too easy but not too hard.
This teacher has the best lectures, but his test are so hard! he assigns a term paper with so many rules and guidelines its crazy. He's very mean when asking any questions, its hard to participate if he comes off rude in front of the class. I would not reccomend this teacher very TOUGH worste I've ever taken.
Helms is the perfect college professor. His lectures are like watching a hilarious TED talk filled with knowledge, but he makes you EARN your grade. Anyone who complains about that last part should get out of college. Tests are tough but fair assessments of the reading material. Prepared me for university in content, as well as in spirit.
Worst teacher at ohlone. Trust me, I tried really hard to pass and he still failed me. He doesn't help you, and if you ask him for help, he will just give you a terrible remark. His standards are unbelievable, he's really tough and wants you to be perfect. I loved psychology, until I took this class. Take with stamatikis, I got an A.
Taking Sheldon's class really enlightened me of many things going on in the world. I am really glad that this was the first psychology course I took because it was truly an amazing intro to psych. He is incredibly hilarious and as long as you work hard, you will pass with an A! His tests are not too hard, and he really does want you to succeed! 3
Taking Mr. Helm's class is a great experience for straight A students! Don't recommend taking any of his classes for summer as it requires a lot of rushed reading and studying. I took PSY 101 in summer of 10th grade in high school and obtained a B+ so nothing is impossible. Just buy the book and do your learning at home in addition to in class.
I am auditing his class and I am still required to do the homework and take the tests. Sheldon is a fun teacher, but auditors shouldn't have to do the work if they're not getting the credit or grade.
Sheldon Helms is the BIGGEST name-dropper I've ever met! Great teacher though.
VERY good, informational teacher. He has so much knowledge about Psych and loves telling his students things outside the book. Good lectures. Tests are kinda hard, but fair. Have to study for that grade. However, you learn so much. If you are really into psych, i would recommend him. If you are worried about your grade, then no. knowledge grade.
Professor Helms was by far the best lecturer I have had. His stories are interesting and funny. I always looked forward to going to class. His tests could be tough if you didn't do the required reading but fairly easy if you are prepared. He is a tough grader on the course paper. I thoroughly enjoyed taking his class.
His lectures are perfect. He is clear with information, offers tips and advice to students, and is upfront with expectations. He tells stories and gives examples for every concept and welcomes questions both inside and outside of class. He can be a bit uppity about a couple of things, but nothing unreasonable.
Honestly, I enjoyed his lectures because they were always interesting. He wasn't really helpful when students asked question after class and would give them rude answers. His test are difficult and are mostly from the book, so you have to read the textbook forwards and backwards. I personally would take him again because he ruined my experience.
Easy class with great lectures. If you read the chapters the test will be on once, expect to be set. Brainstorming for the essay is also good. It's pretty easy to get a good grade on the term paper (I got a 97 on a paper that, had I submitted it to an English class, I probably would have gotten a B on) as long as you complete all the requirements.
Helms definitely reminds me of Harvey Dent from Batman. His lectures are great and he always provides hilarious examples from his life, which helps you retain that information that he has just given you. He has quite a bit of sass and is pretty witty. However, you do have to work your butt off in this class.
Overall a really good class. Don't necessarily have to show up for lectures. If you read the textbook, you should be fine. However, he is a very entertaining lecturer and you can tell he's passionate about what he teaches, which is always a plus. Course paper is straightforward as well. He can be a jerk at times, but he knows it so it's whatever.
Rude and unhelpful. If you want to ask something, he will turn you away the minute you walk up to him and tell you to check the syllabus without even regarding your question. Showing up is unnecessary, you're better off reading by yourself. Made my friends change their major from Psychology because he ruined it for them, but I guess he's funny.
6-7 exams, no midterm, 1 final, survey group project, and then you write a paper based on your survey/results which is about 3-5 pages. Great lectures, however they aren't enough to study and barely cover what's on the exam, so READ IMMEDIATELY. Keep up with the book and write your own notes which will help because there is a cumulative final.
Challenging class, covers entire textbook. He's great at lecturing, but hard to talk to one-on-one. His lectures don't cover everything for tests, so you'll need to read A LOT. Tests are mainly vocab, multiple choice, not too bad just hard to study for. 5-page course paper that's 30% of your grade. Only good thing is that there isn't any homework.
Participation: 20%; Paper: 30%; Tests: 30% (Each test 5%); Final: 20%. Lectures cover most of textbook, but reading still needed for tests (all multiple choice). It's mainly memorization. Paper is on research, and passable as long as you follow all his guidelines. Participation was pretty much free. Strict, but hilarious & passionate teacher! (:
Sheldon Helms is a unique professor and pioneer in his field. Knowledge is what we seek as students and knowledge is what he gives. It is hard to find a professor of his caliber and if you do not take a course with him you have missed out. Read your book, study hard, show respect, be honest, and he will be do the same. One of a kind scholar.
Participation15% Quiz15% Midterm10% Test20% Paper20% Final20% All tests multiple choice. Gives pop quizzes. No makeups. Covers txtbk info outside of lectures. 1 test drop for attending psych event. Research paper on given topic or one of choosing. Great lectures incorporating videos/activities & open to discussion. Interesting, engaging & funny (:
20% participation (which is really just attendance), 30% course paper, 30% tests, 20% final. 6 tests and a final. Lectures are interesting but you have to read the book. Do not procrastinate on the course paper. Easy class if you listen to his lectures and read the book.
I would not recommend anyone to take his class. He is rude, arrogant, and unhelpful. Don't bother asking any questions just check the syllabus. Goes off on rants about his personal views often. Just because he makes jokes in class does not make him a good instructor. If you are a perfect student then you will do well in his class.
Amazing person I agree with many of his views and opinions! Don't take his class if you're not ready to get a lot of opinions shoved in your face. Other than that, lectures are funny and informative. Although, his class is tough. "No mersey!" should be his motto. If you are late or absent test day you don't get to make it up for any reason.
He's a fun teacher but also high standard. The lecture seems fairly understandable but the test is hard. I got A's on all my other courses but a B on he's. Won't take it again!
Bottom line: you'll learn in his class and remember his lectures. If you want to ask a question you better be brave, because he makes you feel stupid for asking them, doesn't answer them if he doesn't like them, or will simply blow you off. He's rude about plenty of things and knows it, simply responds aloud with "Whatever, I have tenure."
amusing lecture and really know how to emphasis what needed to be learned in every chapter
He's a very polarizing teacher. He is an amazing lecturer and you will learn a lot. He is also very rude and has little patience with his students. The work load is light, but EVERY test matters. There is one course paper as well. If you fail one thing, it'll be very hard for you to pass the class. Attend every class and take notes.
Truly captivating person. A plethora of knowledge. Uses psychological manipulation techniques to keep your attention when its needed. It sometimes feels like he's a little too full of himself but such is life when it comes to a person who is this intelligent. He seems very fit for his position.
This was the first course I took at Ohlone in summer semester , he is just amazing , his lectures are inspiration enough to make you reconsider your major choices. I thoroughly enjoyed his class even though it was a LOT of work but definitely a very good experience. I would recommend if you need to take Psych 101 he is the best .
He's an interesting teacher. I'll be fair; I liked him because his lectures were straightforward and interesting, and he's really funny, but he's going to be one of the harder professors at Ohlone. He's strict on formatting on his papers, and you have to go a little beyond the lectures into the book. Basically, you'll learn, or you'll burn.
Honestly, this teacher is really funny & has a cool personality but I would not recommend you to take his PHYC101 class. He is a tough grader, and lacks in clarifying things. If you make a MINOR mistake on your course paper he will drop your grade immensely. I recommend you stay away from this teacher.
While Helms is very knowledgable and has a good sense of humor, he is one of the worst professors I have ever had. He is very arrogant and rude towards students, and grades extremely hard on the final paper. I have an A the whole semester and my grade dropped to a B just because of my final paper!! I do not recommend taking him!
awful .rude , test questions come from the book and lecture , so you will have to read the book also. he made it so hard for students , he is not clear enough in the lecture.
Sheldon is a tough professor, I cannot recommend taking his class, he is extremely tough and I just don't want others to take him. The class consists of mostly lecture and barely any assignments. There is a research paper, that he grades pretty tough on. If you decide to take his class, beware how hard it is and his grading. No thanks, do not take.
I'm getting the sense that people either love him or hate him. I really wasn't a fan of his personality and thoroughly resent him. I personally found him to be arrogant and condescending. If you don't enjoy his sense of humor, be prepared to be stuck with it, because he's not going to stop trying so damn hard.
Top level education, but also very fun. Makes coming to class each day something to look forward to. I'm a university student who is taking a break, and found Helms' class to be much like those a 4-year colleges. He knows his stuff, has strict rules, and sticks with them to make it fair for everyone. He's also very funny, & could have been a comic!
By far, the toughest class I've taken at Ohlone. Group survey project was time consuming, but very rewarding. His lectures are thorough, but he leaves time most weeks for group projects in class. Definitely not a show-up-and-pass class! Helms is one of the best professors at Ohlone College.
Sheldon dares to go where most teachers won't. He changes how to scientifically analyze the world. A lot of teachers focus on teaching you what to think, he focuses on teaching you how to think. His classes are always filled with things to remember. Students leave his class smarter and more aware. The most memorable teacher I have ever had by far.
Helms was an alright teacher. He wasn't amazing but he definitely knows what he is talking about. There is no homework, so make sure you ace his tests and the midterm paper if you want an A. He doesn't go over everything on the test in his lectures, so make sure you read the textbook to study.
I took his class over the summer and I noticed that one should really focus on vocabulary and general ideas of the chapters.
Took course during summer, expected there to be much reading due to compressed semester. The material was interesting so it didnt seem like hw. My recommendation would be to allow your students to view past tests and quizzes. Still unsure which ones I got wrong on each assignment, will lead you to possibly choose same wrong answer on final exam.
Know your vocabulary and the tests will be easy
Sheldon is amazing! The best professor I had at Ohlone College, by far. He's smart, VERY funny, and really cares about his students. I'm in a masters program at Cal now, and I feel more prepared than half the students in my classes because of Sheldon's guidance and suggestions.
I think the reason many people don't get Helms' sense of humor is the generation gap, to be honest. Take a moment to learn about pop culture from prior generations, you won't regret it. Despite this, Helms really does have have a knack for making the course material relatable, and thus easier to understand. Listen and read!
Imagine a cross between Sheldon (from The Big Bang Theory) and Kenneth (from 30 Rock). Got it? Good. That's Professor Helms. In my opinion he is one of the best professors I've had- and I took Psych 101 as a gen ed. He is crystal clear about his expectations for the class and makes lectures super interesting. I loved this class!
It's almost impossible not to enjoy his class -- very engaging, clear lectures. In my experience, whenever a student raised their hand for a question, they were answered promptly unless Professor Helms didn't realize the hand. A very charismatic and funny professor. As long as you don't miss classes or show up late, everything should be fine!
In class is mostly lectures. That might sound a little boring, but Sheldon has done a great job making the learning engaging. Plus he is funny and kind of chill.
Professor Helms is great! He is very insightful, funny, and smart. Heml's test are sort of difficult though, so I recommend reading and re-reading the chapters being tested on. Overall, a very good professor.
Professor Helms is incredibly well-read and knowledgeable. His lectures are engaging, entertaining, and easy to understand. The tests are straightforward, but it is crucial to read the allotted chapters in the textbook thoroughly to get a decent grade. He is a bit difficult to approach or ask questions, but his requirements are kept pretty clear.
Helms is a great teacher. Interesting lectures, clear grading. I HIGHLY recommend reading the textbook, because when he misses class (which is often) he expects you to learn what he did not teach. HE DOESNT POST ANY GRADES!!! Its currently 1 week after finals and still not one post on canvas. Its really annoying. Hes snarky and hard to get close to
I wouldnt have gotten an A if I didnt know how to study for myself. His lectures are brief and cover very little. If you ask questions about why he has graded something a certain way he can be very patronizing. Study straight from the book and you will be fine but dont take the class if you want help from the teacher.
He is very funny, but the tests made me think this would be the first class I would fail. Each test is based off 2- 3 chapters, meaning you will have to read A LOT. I cried, it was hard... but I passed :)
Professor Helms is great at lecturing, he keeps his students engaged and is very comical. Make sure you read the textbook though, as the tests are heavily based on reading material rather than the actual lectures. Take advantage of the extra credit as well if offered!! The research paper isn't too bad if you dedicate enough time to it.
I've never had a professor gloat about being rude to their students before. He made people feel bad for asking questions and was late every day despite a 0 tolerance tardy policy. You must read because more of the test is on what you reading and not covered in class. 80% of test material is never mentioned in class and there's no study guide.
He is such a character. He has amazing stories and makes going to class worth it. It is a tough class but if you try hard enough you will do great. I personally did not seek help from him as he is a little intimidating (and I've heard he can be rude). But his lectures will keep you awake. He also chooses cheapest book for you to buy. Study hard.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He is one of the worst professors I have taken. He does not care for his students or their situations and is very rude. His tests are extremely hard and be prepared to teach yourself the material and read the entire book because his lectures have nothing to do with his tests! Definitely do not reccomend taking his class.
I second, he is one of the worst professors I have taken (I've had many). He is rude, mocks past students for having different view points than his, and has a foul mouth. He does not return graded material, only gives the # correct (nothing to study). Hes not a bad lecturer, tho. You'd better read the book. Dont hope for any accommodation. AVOID!!!
Love this class and this teacher! He makes you work for your grade, but it's worth it in the end. He's fair and makes the class super interesting. He really values the students that attend regularly. His lectures are memorable. Make sure to study for tests!
This is the best professor I've ever had! His lectures are like TED talks, and he's as funny as a stand-up comic! Anyone who complains is probably fresh out of high school. Helms' style is exactly what I got at University. Nobody walks you through the material; that's up to you. The professor is there to teach the subject, not how to learn.
Funniest professor you'll ever have. Also the clearest. Lectures, tests, gives back results. Follows the syllabus to a T (so you can know what is coming). Gives clear assignments, doesn't take excuses. Everything was so organized, I never worried about my grade. I am a foreign student, and Professor Helms made me feel like I could succeed.
The most incredible lectures youve ever heard! Funny, interesting, and easy to follow. He had to cancel class once this term, and I was so disappointed! Thats never happened to me in my life! I mean, how often do you actually look FORWARD to a class?? Helms is straightforward about his methods. Do it, and you pass. Dont, and you wont.
This course was great! Helms requires you to know statistics BEFORE you take this class, which is really about Research Methods. He teaches us the philosophy of science, how to evaluate scientific claims, and lets you do a REAL scientific survey as a class project. It was a lot of work, but he supported us all the way. Don't miss class, though!
Abnormal Psych is taught as a group discussion, and it was a trip. I'm used to listening, and maybe asking 1 question. Helms makes us talk about the disorders, the treatments, etc., so you better read BEFORE the class. Also, you present and lead a discussion on a chapter (as a group). That was scary, but fun. One guy was a pain in class, tho!
Pros -You have a chance to get extra credit once -funny Cons -Is not helpful AT ALL with explaining what is on the tests -Not approachable, sarcastic, do not talk to him if you are a sensitive person who has many questions -NEVER ever tells you your grade at any point during semester Good luck!
DO. NOT. MISS. CLASS. That's my best advice. If you fall behind the reading, you're done. Lectures are good, but the group project was even better. Made some friends in this class because of the group survey project we did (mostly outside of class). Really more about research methods, but lots of psychology facts and interesting stuff.
Be ready to bust your buns for that A. He's a great lecturer, but when it comes to help with passing the class, you're on your own. No study guides, and lectures don't cover everything on the exam. Be ready to read the entire textbook or you'll have a Very Bad Time . Still, his class is very fun and informative, if you're willing to work for it.
Professor Helms' class definitely isn't an easy one. If you're someone who doesn't want to put in the work, you'll hate this class. However, I enjoyed working for my grade! His lectures are fun to listen to, but for the most part you'll have to read from the book and study HEAVILY. He's strict, but not nearly as mean as people say.
Worst professor ever. Get ready to put in heavy duty work to earn that A
If you want to learn psychology, TAKE THIS CLASS! If you want to experience what a university class environment, TAKE THIS CLASS! If you expect to be treated like a child whos still in grade school, stay out of college. Helms is an amazing teacher who sets reasonable goals and treats everyone the same. His lectures are hilarious and fascinating.
Sheldon is my new favorite teacher! He provides a syllabus with everything spelled out, then sticks with it no matter what. I love that! As a working mother, I need it! Such wonderful class, and masterfully taught!
He's a really good teacher, but he has a strong personality. I didn't really care, but others found him a bit off putting. i thought he was really funny. He has a clear syllabus and informs of any changes. I would take his class again, even with some of his strict requirements with papers. He's a nice guy
Tough professor be prepared to work hard for that A
Sheldon is a university-level professor. By that, I mean that you shouldn't expect to be coddled; you should expect to LEARN. He has become my unofficial mentor, and I plan to take all three of the subjects he teaches. His lectures are so incredibly interesting and entertaining that you don't want them to end! That's pretty rare, I'd say.
I love Professor Helms' lectures, but he does not cover everything. To be able to get good grades in the tests, you will have to read the textbook and take really good notes. He can be really helpful if you're a psychology major. Attendance is not graded but it is best to not miss his class, especially on any test days or due dates.
a pain. very unapproachable and rude. avoid him at all costs.
I took his class and failed but decided to try a different teacher and got an A. He's not for everyone pros: Great lectures and presentations; note taking is very straight forward And he does truly care about what he is teaching and he is very passionate Cons He's very straightforward TOUGH GRADER don't miss class ever
This class is one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. It's almost impossible to pass it. Worked hard everyday, read the chapters, took notes, and still wasn't able to pass. He's very rude and doesn't seem to care for his students.
The one REAL professor at this college! If you want to learn psychology, this is the guy. If you want to be a child, stay home. Helms is an incredible professor, and a true intellect. He speaks out on controversial issues, so he gets tarted by religious zealots.
Tough grader, doesnt clarify and little personal interaction because it's such a large lecture. Not the most caring or compassionate professor there is. He can really snap at students when they ask a genuine question so be aware of that. A word of caution for those who may select his class
I am an international student. Professor Helms helped me find my way, and is very kind. He teaches psychology from a long time, and knows so much! You must read the book, and also come to class to learn. He will help you, but learn!
Makes psychology interesting. If you attend class, take notes and study then you will get a good grade. I mean come on, we aren't in high school. You get out of it what you put into it. Would recommend him for anyone taking psych.
Abnormal Psychology was my favorite class of the semester. Helms teaches the first few chapters, then we do collaborative learning. Group presentations and lots of discussion. Gotta read the chapters outside of class.
Such a great class! Lots of group interaction, and great discussions. Helms is a master! His classes teach HOW to think.
He really prepares students for university studies. It's not the normal hand-holding that happens in many community college courses. He's a great teacher though because his lectures are really great at making the content meaningful. He is very bold, but if you come in with an open mind you can see just how entertaining he is and how much he cares.
Our class was comprised of a bunch of small quizzes, a research project and a final. I failed basically every quiz and was unsure of how I did on the one paper and I somehow passes this class. Classes often let out early due to short and confusing lectures. Depending on the day he can be weird about answering questions.
Professor Helms is amazing. He gave the best lectures I have received in a college class and he does care about his students. Do not make the same mistake I did and not read thoroughly - it is a must for the tests. There is one major course paper, but as long as you follow the guidelines, you will be fine. He is an amazing professor, take him!
Professor Helms, taught and explained so well. Take him if you want to learn. Get ready to read the book because in this class you will get what you worked for. I love and respect professor Helms. He can be total jerk if you ask nonsense questions. READ THE BOOK and you'll be fine. Hes class is very engaging and informative. AMAZING PROFESSOR VD
One of the best teachers ever
Professor Helms is awesomely amazing. I love him. Teach and explain well in the way that student can easily understand. Read a book and study hard. In his class you will get what you deserve. Professor Helms has an engaging type of lectures. I enjoy his class and would take again if I need to. Over all, Prof Helms is one of a kind. BRILLIANT
I really loved Sheldon and I don't think he should have the bad reviews that he has. His class is not an easy A but still manageable. You need to attend lectures AND read the book to pass the tests, a lot of material is small things from the textbook. His lectures are funny and not super boring. Study and you won't have a hard time.
He is well educated in what he teaches & knows what he's talking about. Very lecture heavy, so if you don't go to class, get ready to read. A lot. Has no study guides whatsoever, nor does he ever review before a test that covers multiple chapters. Gave us a schedule so he gives no reminders for assignments that are due. Have to be very self-reliant
For Psych 101, he grades on 6 total assignments ...1- APA exam, 4- Ch. Tests, 1- Research Paper... but he is EXCELLENT at disseminating information relative to the topic. Lectures are always interesting (even when content is dry). Super nice and passionate about psych.
Follow instructions and try and it'll be totally fine, some of these reviews are LOL. He gives great lectures and class is actually fun. I know some people might not like him because he is sarcastic/sort of strict but he only means business (sprinkled with sass). Print your zipgrade sheets beforehand and keep track of the syllabus (it saves lives)
Although his lectures are very interesting, he is very strict regarding his class. His tests are STRESSFUL. You will not pass if you do not read the book or take good notes. No study guides, no reviewing for tests, no tests given back to review your errors. The one plus side of his class is that I did learn a lot from his lectures.
bruh will literally roast anyone, class is sorta easy, be on your own case, dont let the vibes fool you be prepared
Professor Helms is super funny on ALL of his lectures. However, on tests, he only gives back a sheet telling you how many answers you got correct (so you can't see what you got wrong). Similar issue with the course paper except without any feedback at all. If you do take his class (though I don't recommended it), make sure to read the textbook!
Literally the worst teacher ever. He does not know how to teach at all. You won't know what grade you have until it shows up on your transcript. He expects you to do his job for him. He doesn't use canvas, he doesn't put grades anywhere either. He just gives you a paper that tells your grade after each test. You're better off teaching yourself.
Amazing professor! I had to laugh at those who wanted to get the test questions returned to them. Who does that?! LOL! Helms is a true professional. He teaches like a university professor, so high schoolers beware. It aint easy, but you learn a LOT.
This class was so interesting! Most of it was participation and discussion. Its called Collaborative Learning, and such a great way to learn. I looked forward to every class. Helms guides us, but let us learn at our own pace
Took this to satisfy a UC requirement. Loved it! Our group project was fun, challenging, and a great idea at a college with no psych lab. Helms is a university-level professor who knows his stuff. Very good class.
Sheldon is so funny! And really, really smart! I joined Psychology Club so I could learn more from him outside of class. This was my first psychology class, and it really sparked an interest. May change my major.
Great class. Learned a lot. The book was new, so kinda expensive. But we all got to know each other, and had great discussions. Dont take if you fear public speaking. Theres a lot of that.
Took this online before and failed. Took Helms, and got an A. It was hard work, but now I understand it better. I prefer in-person class over online, and Helms doesnt even teach online. I think hes right that psychology should be face to face. Hes also very funny, well organized, and takes no crap. Youll love it.
Sheldon is so into psychology that its contagious. Even if you come Im not really caring, he will MAKE you care. I found something fascinating in every lecture. My major is Nursing, but now I want to learn more about the social sciences.
Different than any other class Ive ever taken! Most classes make you sit there and keep quiet. In this one, you HAVE to talk and participate, or you cant pass. Thats great for a talker like me. And its a great way to learn.
Your score in this class is heavily dependent upon an outside group survey project. But Helms weaves in time for students to meet in class to work on the project, and ties the lecture material into it as much as possible to help you complete it. This also helps us experience what its like to work on a research team, so it has multiple purposes.
First of all, don't be scared! I bet you will change your mind whatever you've heard about after taking this class! The most hilarious professor ever. All you need to do is follow exactly what he mentions on the syllabus, and do your best. This class involves lots of reading and discussions. If I can do it as an international, you can do it as well
Professor Helms is super educated and knows what he is teaching about. His instructions are clear and concise. He's also hilarious and will have the entire class laughing. He can be a bit sassy at times but overall his lectures are great. The only downside is he doesn't use canvas so its a bit annoying having to constantly check the syllabus.
I had his class for fall 2018. It was experimental psychology and you were graded mainly on the project we do. I wanna give a huge shout out to him because he worked really hard with me since I couldnt go to class all the time and really only came for the test and the project And still got the B. Thank you so much!
Hes a really good professor especially if you no nothing about psychology and if its your first psych class. Since covid-19 made half of his lectures online, my whole family has been tuning in on his lectures. My mom in particular is a huge fan of his and really enjoys his lectures. Overall, hes hilarious and this is a really exciting class!
His lectures are very informative. He is very charismatic and does his best to make class interesting and funny. As long as you show up to class and study hard you will do fine. He's not rude, just strict, which is understandable considering he has a lot of students to teach. I really recommend him, you'll learn a lot about psychology.
seldon was a very delightful psychology professor. i highly recommend taking his class if you get the chance. he most definitely doesnt have the personality of a plate. he tends to be rather insightful, especially in the worlds many issues.
One of my favorite teachers ever, really makes class interesting and fun. Not boring at all and is fair. Like if you read syllabus and instructions and just do exactly what he says you won't have any problems. Super funny
I had taken AP psych in high school and reconsidered my entire major because of the teacher. Professor Helms completely convinced me otherwise, he is an AMAZING lecturer and I always looked forward to his class because not only did you learn, you had FUN. It felt like a conversation with someone who shared the same interests.
This class was great and very informative. Professor Helms's lectures are really funny and engaging. Make sure to take good notes during lectures and to read the textbook well to study for the chapter tests and the final. He responds to emails in a timely manner and can be asked questions outside of class. Overall a great professor!
I didn't like him at all. He accused my cheating because I was out of the Canvas test for about 2 seconds on 1 test because if Internet issues. NEVER TAKE HIM.
Awesome, engaging lecturer but the final grade is heavily based on tests, so make sure you take detailed lecture notes and read every chapter of the textbook. Really enjoyed his sense of humor during classes even amid online lectures.
His lectures are engaging and passionate, and he grades fairly. It's odd that he claims to be a devout skeptic but becomes super defensive if anyone questions him, even about the date of a citation. If you can handle his 90s videos of (almost all white) people and "men are so oppressed" narrative, you'll learn a lot.
The direction given for the course paper was unclear, and he repeatedly claimed that there were restrictions written in the document that were not actually there. He does not give any feedback on tests at all, just the number of questions you got right. He also bullied students during class and over email for challenging him. Uses PowerPoints.
His lectures are hilarious and as long as you read the book and take good notes during his lectures, you shall be fine.
Social Psychology was a blast! This is one of those teachers who is so prepared, it makes you want to do well. We had lectures online, took tests on Canvas, and had opportunities to talk in breakout groups. His blog has wonderful links and extra info that must have taken hours and hours to prepare. I did well, but I worked for it. So fun!
Profoundly organized, strict in all the right ways, and really knows his subject area. I love the lectures, and they really helped me make sense out of the chapters. The written assignment was a challenge, but we were given everything we needed to complete it. The virtual format was difficult for everyone, but COVID-19 made that necessary. Loved it
I took two classes over the summer because I'm home from university. Professor Helms' class was organized, the lectures were fun, he stuck to the syllabus, and he was flexible without being a pushover. It was just like the courses I take at UCSB. The other class from someone else, not so much. Would highly recommend him if you're a real student.
Professor Sheldon is a very good teacher and cares very much for his students to learn. I am a foreign student, and my English is not perfect. He is clear in lecturing, makes each classes fun, and very respectful to all of us. I enjoyed the class and had learned so much!
Professor Helms, is the most strict professor of all. He does grade hard on tests. Your attendance has to be right on time. He doesnt grade them right a way so in a way that is frustrating . I highly recommend not to take his class if you want to pass.
His lectures are interesting so try to listen and take as much notes as possible. There is 1 course paper, 5 tests, and of course a final. I wish he provided some type of study guide as some of the tests can be a bit overwhelming. He also doesn't use Canvas so you kinda have to be on top of your things and submit it on time (he doesn't remind you)
He does know his subject matter very well. However, his lectures do not align with the textbook. I have found a few inconsistencies between the two multiple times. His test are very difficult and mainly based off the book information. No matter how hard I studied I got B-'s and C's. He is rude to many of his students and thinks he's always right.
Professor Helms is very entertaining and funny. He class is mainly lectures and notes. You also need to read the textbook on your own.
I get everyone has their own experiences. However, it seems that he is inconsistent from student to student. He doesn't believe in hw so most of your grade will heavily be based on your tests, which were very difficult. Even after listening in class and reading every chapter, I still found myself getting c's or f's along with the rest of the class.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!! 7-8 exams with no clear guide at all of what to expect on them. USES REMOTELY PROCTORED(which records you while taking exams to see if you cheat)!! Does not like anyone who disagrees with him. Intro to psych should be easy but he makes it extremely difficult for some reason. Complains about his problems most of time. Beware.
No homework just 8 extremely hard exams. Talks about his problems during lecture most of time while showing outdated/pointless 80's videos. Gets mad and uses foul language when someone disagrees with him. HES ALWAYS RIGHT!! Claims he's too busy to be a teacher and answer emails while bragging about how many celebs he knows that are not even famous.
Hes very inconsiderate of his students! His tests are also very hard and requires proctorio while testing. Also very opinionated and hes basically never wrong. If you can take someone else, Id highly recommend you do that because he takes forever to grade things and you wont know your actual grade until probably the end of the semester
He doesn't hold your hand and expects you to preform at a college level, and that is okay. I'm totally fine with that. I just don't like that he can be pretty mean at times. If you ask a question he doesn't like he gets angry, and sometimes he says stuff that's pretty demeaning to students who participate in class.
If he decides that you are one of his favorite students, then you will have an easy time in his class. If he decides that you are not, then he will look for reasons to fail you, such as giving you a zero on your course paper. I've written at least a dozen college papers, not once have a received a zero on "spelling and grammar."
I have seen a lot of bad reviews recently and can assure you I am a real student. The class is graded by many assignments which gives a lot of opportunity to get the grade you want and participation is worth a lot more than most classes, which by the way he encourages everyone to participate. If you don't get an A in the class, it is not his fault.
Professor Helms lectures are funny and I did learn quite a bit from them. However, I did not like how he would talk about former students in a negative fashion (sometimes using unfiltered language). I personally feel that's just rude. I won't be taking him again and would not recommend him.
Helms is a rock star! This class is experimental psychology, and we had to create a professional scientific survey. It was a LOT of work, but Helms made it interesting and do-able by giving us small assignments and goals each week, usually right after lecturing on that topic. I was so proud of our group and its survey!
Personally, this class was overwhelming at first because of the amount of reading that you are required to do but the content is super interesting! There are 5 tests, 1 final, and a group presentation. There is no specific homework but you should read the textbook to do well on the tests. Participation is KEY. Overall, this class was very fun!
Sheldon was an amazing teacher and despite the online format, he made class enjoyable. If you take this class, be prepared to do the reading and assignments and participate in lectures because he puts points in for that later. He is very laid back and soo funny. This class should not be hard to pass as long as you do the work and pay attention.
Professor Helms made PSY101 fun! His personality is what kept me interested as this was online with lectures assisted with slideshows. Use your textbook to try to clarify everything and pay attention in class.
Student-led lectures enabled students to approach learning in a more engaging way. instead of listening to lectures from the prof, students lead super casual in-class discussions on their assigned chapter. Intimidating at first, but makes the content more memorable and the class is overall more effective. Hilarious personality, hate or love it
In our current online environment, Professor Helm's Psych 115 course was a very refreshing. As most classes these are online or lecture-based with very little opportunities to interact with our classmates, this course us students a chance to do so, making distance learning a lot more engaging and interesting as well. Highly recommend course.
Very inconsiderate and overly strict. No compassion for students. Do not take.
Helms is a great professor, but you need to be 100% responsible for yourself. He lays out expectations in the syllabus and if you can't meet those, don't take the class. He will not change even if you are dying (which is good to know). I will probably take more of his classes and do recommend him, but do the work!
Maybe it was because my class was online, but he graded way too hard. He thinks he is right all the time and anyone contradicting him is going to get a hard time in class. The class is mostly lectures and a few tests so grading matters and if you miss a lecture, there's no going back.
I really think whoever is in his class should leave ASAP. it should not even be an option. he grades your work very harshly. for my class he forgot the timings for the finals and everything got screwed. He also gives you hard quizs that has about 50 to 60 questions. Before the Finals there is a project that he makes you do, and it pretty hard.
Horrible teacher! Sheldon does not care at all about the students and repeatedly demonstrated this by being demeaning towards students with questions. His test expectations are beyond unclear and he doesn't say which answers were wrong. He gave me a 0 on my final paper because my cover page wasn't centered. If you want to take psych avoid him!
This course is a TRUE college class, and I loved it! Anyone who says Helms isn't fair, or grades too harshly, is engaging in sour grapes because they're not ready for college. I learned SO MUCH from this course, and Professor Helms was the reason. Clear lectures, funny presentation style, and respects his students' time and experiences.
I made a ratemyprofessor account just to leave feedback on mr. Helms. Mr. Helms was by no shadow of a doubt the worst professor i have ever taken in my life, i have now since graduated as of dec 2020 in CIS but wow was mr helms a real piece of work when i attended ohlone college in fremont. Hedoesn't teach he just berates you between his lectures
Love him or hate him, no in between. Personally, I enjoyed his classes and would take this prof again, but I'm a psych nerd, so keep that in mind. Be prepared for a lot of studying and writing, and pay attention to the lectures. You won't have an A handed to you, but you can definitely get one without unreasonable amounts of trouble.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF. he does not care about his students. if you are sick or missed a test you cant re take it no matter what your excuse is. I did good on most of the hw, quizzes and discussions but when it came to the paper HE GAVE ME A 0/100. The paper needed to be 5 pages long and I only wrote 5 paragraphs. Seriously? a 0?
Bro is literally the worst professor ever
Honestly if I could I would rate Sheldon Helms a 0 if I could. He has by far been the worst professor I have had so far he is not accessible outside of class and likes to pick on students. I sent him a email this semester regarding a test and he replied to me while making a class announcement which in my eyes is not professional at all.
PSY101 with Prof Helms will be an easy A if you put in the work. I took his Asynchronous session and so much information was left out of chapter exams that wasn't covered in his video lectures. Too much information is crammed into one test. Very hard to keep up with material. If you follow the course paper guidelines you should pass with an A.
I thoroughly enjoyed his class both his unfiltered personality and how he makes the material even more interesting than it already is. No homework other than the course paper and timed quizzes tests not for the faint of heart if you don't do well under that stressful time crunch. Not an easy class, but it is the most fun and interesting class yet.
He loves to talk about himself constantly, which is draining, and he is always right so if you disagree with him, he will berate and criticize you in front of the class. He criticized a student in class for giving him a review on Rate My Professor App (and said I know who that student is) which is a big red flag. Very unprofessional, no filter.
Very unprofessional, always talks about himself. Criticizes former students. No respect for faculty members. On the syllabus he states that what we discuss in class will stay only in class. Bertartes students who disagree or have a different opinion. You won't know how you are doing in class until the end. Doesn't grade & show the % on Canvas.
Having a conversation with him about class concerns was difficult and his overall attitude made me regret registering for his class.
Despite all the negative reviews, I will say Professor Helm's lectures are very captivating and interesting. However, I personally think this class was more stressful than it needed to be, especially because grades were not displayed throughout the semester.
He is good at what he does. As long as you don't be disruptive/rude, you're fine. Everything was submitted online besides the presentation, only thing grades weren't posted right away and you wouldn't know how you're doing til the end. This class was one of the most interesting take it, he's actually pretty cool.
What they need to know is that they deserve a better professor than Professor Helms. He doesn't care about the students or what you learn. Every class is the Sheldon Helms show. Do not expect to leave his classes with the knowledge you hoped for as his testing methodology is for you to take the tests walk away without knowing what you didn't know
Professor Helms. People either love or hate him. I loved his class since his lectures were engaging and interesting. He could be more lenient with extensions and giving more time on tests. Otherwise, as long as you do all the discussions thoughtfully, read, and submit work on time, you'll be set! I recommend this class to full-time students.
Very inconsiderate, extremely rude, unfriendly, and horrible distribution of work. Do not take this professor.
Beware, this professor gives you low grades and does not even say why. On the discussion where you introduce yourself and say what you know about psychology, he still grades 50% and doesn't elaborate. The final essay does not allow for any internet or scientific sources which makes the essay needlessly difficult paired with his tough grading.
Helms is rude and hard to interact with. Watch out when taking one of his classes because if you don't appreciate his humor, you won't do well.
On the last day an assignment not even shown on canvas he dropped on students and never graded any of the homeworks until the last day of the semester so you could not reatke anything -he doesnt offer retakes -2 hours videos must watch -tests that are way too hard for a psychology class -not understnding what so ever
Sheldon was very funny and nice to have as a professor. His lectures help with chapter quizzes and give you plenty of time. They will NEVER be due at 11:59 so watch the time and day it's due. I wish he was teaching other psych courses because he makes learning fun and easy to follow. His tests are online but in person lectures. Awesome teacher.
this class was really easy. We had 1 paper which the grading criteria was not very clear but its really easy to get an A just follow his directions. VERY LITTLE BUSY WORK WHICH I LOVE If you took PSY-101 then you alr know 80% of this class You need to read the textbook though, if you only go on lectures you fail. Hes very slow in grading though
Professor Helms can be a bit of a character, but if you stay on top of the work, his class is manageable. unstuckstudy ai was a lifesaver for exam prep. Just don't expect much leniency - you'll need to be diligent to do well.
You're either going to love him, or you're going to hate him. He might seem a little hard on you, but his lectures are interesting and fun, and I enjoyed how he taught. His lectures stuck with me even after transferring to a four-year Uni. His jerk attitude is preparing you for future professors! I've had plenty of Sheldons after Sheldon.
I loved this guy's class. Before I took him, I read through all of the ratings on here, and you scared me. In all honesty, you will enjoy the class a lot if you follow his rules. He is not at all accommodating for late work, but he is clear about this in the beginning of the semester. I got an A as a high school sophomore, so you will be fine!
He grades on his opinions and not what the assignment says, if he doesn't like your opinion on something we go over he will go on a rampage about how he's right and you're wrong. A terrible grader and you can only see your grades at end of semester which is terrible, he's also incapable of giving a full score even if you do what he asks for.
Ive never been so disappointed abt a prof. & these other reviews proved me right. He's not interactive or helpful to students and cares more about his ego than his student's concerns. His workload wasnt as bad and hes passionate about his job. Still sucks bc he cant communicate, I wish I could get a refund from taking his course
I thought Psychology101 would be easy as my first college class. Boy, was I wrong. He does not accommodate at all to anything. I sent him an email asking about a due date and he hit me with the "I'm not sure if your schedule has changed, but mine has not". Could've said no. Gave me a 68/100 on a course paper because it was 50 words under 5 pages.
LOVED HIS LECTURES. tests are hard cuz some questions aren't accurate to the chapter. We can't see our answers. Ask a lot of questions in class if you don't get it. Chapters are really long, but interesting. Everything's due at 5pm. You gotta attend class and fully read the chapter to do well. Set aside 2 hours daily at least, for chapter reading.
hs lectures I admit, were very entertaining. But I will say after one incident, it is clear that Helms lacks basic respect for his students. He made derogatory statements and belittling remarks that was not befitting of an educator. I went to a counselor to seek advice, and was told I was not the first to speak up on this issue. Avoid if possible.
I understand that a lot of professors can be very strict to their course policy, but being passive aggressive and mocking students by sending mass emails mocking with very rude words, thats a new to me to see from an educator and a professor. Thanks Professor anyways I hope your approach gets better.
He was one of the best professors I have experienced, and he's also super funny. He was very understanding of my situations, and his slides were easy to follow. If you just listen to him, you can pass the class easily.
He is very strict so don't expect any wiggle room or accommodations on anything. Other than that the weekly assignment is short writing about the chapter and there are tests every once in awhile. SUPER EASY. It would be hard to fail this class and the final is a course paper that involves watching a movie and I loved writing it!!
You may not like the work load but you will learn. He is a very good professor
Professor Helms isn't bad of a professor, he's hilarious, sassy, and quite opinionated. Wouldn't recommend him as a professor if you can't really handle sarcasm. When it comes to the class itself, try not to miss the slides, as they cannot be shared. You will have to rely on a person's notes if you miss a class. The textbook is needed in this class
I enjoyed watching his lectures from the comfort of my bed. #1 easiest Canvas page ever to navigate. Tests can be a difficult. Read and take notes. The material is V INTERESTING and I would suggest psych for those early in college. Only downside is that he doesn't show your overall grade until end of semester.
Helms had some of the best and engaging lectures I've heard. Homework wasn't bad, it was just one discussion post per chapter and even then, for as long as you answered all parts of the prompt you'd get full credit. Tests and quizzes were online, and as someone who didn't read the textbook at all, you'll do fine by attending class every day.
Mr. Sheldon is passionate about the subject, thats for sure. Homework is easy, there is a discussion every week, there are tests every 2-3 weeks, and we have a course paper at the end of the semester However, he gets defensive when you ask questions... horrible attitude overall. Take this class for an easy A, but don't expect leniency from the prof
One of my favorite professors ever. He is very enthusiastic about psychology, and his lectures are exceptionally entertaining and informative. His quizzes and final exam are pretty easy as long as you review your notes beforehand. He assigns A LOT of reading, though. Also, he DOES NOT GIVE EXTENSIONS FOR ANY REASON, so do not expect leniency.
TERRIBLE. If I had a reason to hate life, he's the reason. Grading is super tough and it was a summer course. He will give you low grades without giving feedback, then email the entire class about how everyone sucks at writing discussion posts.
Took 101A over summer. Lectures were avg length/difficulty, test questions are all based on lecture. Textbook required but I never read it and got an A. Always helpful when I emailed him with concerns/questions, sometimes made passive aggressive canvas announcements but I think he means well and was just trying to be funny. Discussion posts are imp
Will trash talk everyone for the first assignment and for any repetitive questions. You'll realize that he was just trying to test your commitment to the class. It gets significantly easier after week 1. You won't see discussion or final paper grades until the last week. Strict deadlines except for the final paper. Test ans choices made me laugh.
He's super chill, passionate, and funny. You'll do a partner presentation on a book chapter. It's a very doable class if you study since his expectations are clear. No tech allowed for notes (but he waits for you to write), and absolutely NO retakes or extra credit.
If you are passionate about psychology Sheldon is wonderful. Makes an obvious effort to bond with the class, and all work is do-able. Provides good add-ons when you are presenting to help yours and the classes understanding of the material. If you get butthurt easily however, maybe avoid because he engages in playful banter with the students. 10/10
Bashes religion, doesnt answer messages. His lectures got wiped from canvas and he took 2 days to repost but didnt extend the due date. He uses AI to grade your papers. He posted final grades at 8 PM and then said he will not answer any questions after wards. He made us do an essay on his gay conversion therapy ppt for extra credit.
This is one of the most enjoyable classes I had this semester, he is really funny. This class when I took it was formatted so you would have to give a lecture on a specific topic. Each week a different person would present. The class is easy enough and requires little to no work, except the tests which are very hard.
