he's a pretty good teacher. he explains everything pretty well and his class is easy if you keep up with the assignments
Pretty easy if you do all the homework, and take notes, but if you don't keep up with the work, your screwed.
Not a hard class, but if you don't keep up with him, you are screwed. Doesn't explain very well, so a lot of individual/self-teaching is required.
Listen to everyone else and KEEP UP ON HOMEWORK and notes!!
His class was so easy and I didn't have to do anything outside of the class....it was mad chillin....and he is a good teacher too.
Easy going, teaches well enough, not much help on homework though, did really well until the final (final=death). Don't get over confident, study, study, study. Don't take course in the summer, I would recomend him though in the spring and fall.
excellent teacher, provides handouts even when your out, keeps track of your work, fast grader, through explainer - if you need an easy teacher cause you suck at math, hes the one
One of the few times I have ever gotten an A and felt that I really worked for it. He was always available for help and really cares about the subject.
teacher does not explain well. we had a couple of snow days so he rushed alot of the material which didnt help. he does however answer any questions you have pretty well so that helped me alot. overall though, not the best teacher.
prof. Kovitz is great mathematician- he explains everything although he is thinking in higher dimensions ;-). I also find him very easy-going, warm and kind person.
One of the greatest mathematics professor! Very helpful, clear and nice. Class is easy but the final is hard. I recommend this class.
very good teacher, knows what he's doing, very nice and helpful
I loved this class! Clear, easy, organized. Nice teacher, tried his best to explain everything to you. If you can't understand pre-calc with him, you won't with any other teacher. I Recommend this class!!!!
easy class
A really good math professor. Very helpful and accessible. Lots of handouts to help explain material. Very well organized and fair. Very nice. If you've had trouble with math in the past, try Professor Kovitz.

too fast
Sweet guy. goes fast in class but if you write down everything he has on the board you cant go wrong in his test. test are base on notes you take. Very easy test. gives out easy score. ex. in the midterm, 8 question if u pass 5 thats 100%. Notes are the most important thing in his class!!!
Cares a lot about making sure his students do well in his class. Tries his best to help them succeed. Gets very passionate and excited about math in class when he is teaching. Students think he is a bit strange but they love him a lot. He is very sweet and kind.
Moves very fast but is very helpful. Is always willing to meet after class. Wants his students to do well. Just dont get lost or it will be very hard to catch up. Tests and quizzes are almost identical to the homework he gives you. Do the homework and listen carefully and you will do well.
great teacher
He is very helpful to those needed..he put out extra time for reviews..he cares for his students..but he goes too fast..
He goes really fast and is hard to follow. It's intimidating to raise your hand to ask for clarification because is moving at such a fast pace.
satistics, he is good, but you have to follow him in order to learn it, i got a B but my friend got a D so it all depends.
He is a good professor, but moves very fast so be ready to do homework in order to keep up. If you go to class and take his notes you will do good on the tests. I went to extra help with him a few times and hes helpful. Its a tough class but he wants you to do good. He's very strange but he's a good professor
Moves way too fast. But, he's a nice guy and he's very helpful. Go to the reviews, they're very similar to the actual test
His Tests are fine if you go to his reviews but his Final blows because his review doesnt help taking the Test as much as it should. Don't take his Final Review serious or you will drop 2 grades.
Not an easy class if you don't take notes or skip classes a lot. Have to do hw and reviews in order to get better grade. Helpful outside class. Printouts for each lecture are helpful. Keep your work so you can review it for midterm and final. By far, he's the best math prof I've taken. KOVITZ ROCKS!!!!
If you are good at math and can learn at a fast pace then he's the professor for you, if not, then choose a better professor. He goes really fast as if it's the end of the world! It seems like he's lecturing to himself rather than to the class because he never stop and think if anyone would get what he's saying.
Just goes 100mph and screws up alot with helping that i needed tutor. He's a nice guy but trust me when I tell you, he's a mess and someone has to tel him to just chill and teach at a slow pace. The final was what killed me so word of advice, go to review sessions because if you don't, you'll fail miserably.
I took him at summer 1, at the first time i was so confused with what he saying he explain everything soo fast but after a while i get use to it and all his exam question is easy if u do your hw. Go to his review for the final tats my suggestion.Overall he's GOOD bt explain averything so fast u should go to his office often and he'll help u a lot!
Hard class, but Kovitz is a GREAT professor. I hate math of any kind but really enjoyed this class because of him. A word of advice, go to all extra study sessions and try not to miss class.. The final exam is BRUTAL.. make sure you study.. I had an A in the class and dropped to a C because of the final.. BEWARE!
Kovitz is great! He goes through the material in class really fast but as long as you do the homework it's easy enough to follow. He's really helpful when you have questions and he is a totally amazing math nerd!
Great teacher, but you must attend class and dont be late. All classes help and you learn sth new everyday, so go! keep up with hmwork, it helps with grades even if your hmwrk grades arent that good. do well on first test cause it only gets harder. review your hmwrk and do it over before tests if you have fallen behind, it really helps.
Class is tough but doable. Go to ALL the review sessions, especially the final one! everything he goes over is on the test, so if you study that you'll be fine. go to him for help because hes always willing and loves when you have questions. ps hes always covered in chalk and wears the same outfit everyday but hes a sweatheart!
He is by far the best math teacher I have ever had. I'v always been average in math abd I walked away with a B+. Do all the assignments and ask for help he is always willing. He wants to see you succeed and if you put in the effort you will not be disappointed! Attend the final review!!!!! It's imperative that you do unless you are a natural at mat
Had him fall semester precalculus. No textbook, just notes. Excellent professor if you come to class, take notes, do homework, and study before exams. Currently taking calculus at Harvard Extension and the prof there is teaching same way (both of them are Harvard Alum). If you have avg. intelligence and do what I preach...A+ for you.
I am not very good at math so i was terrifed before taking this course, he is an AMAZING professor, he teaches you exactly how to solve the problem and if you take notes and DO THE HOMEWORK, you will not have any problems in his class. HE is a bit fast especially when it came to trig! TAKE HIM IN THE SUMMER, stay on your work.best math teacher ever
Kovitz is a good teacher, nice guy. the class is good if you're comfortable in a faster paced learning environment... **don't need to buy a textbook cuz he orints the pages out for you!!** it's useful to visit during office hours if you need to and review sessions are generally helpful, not as fast paced as the actual class.
He is passionate about the material and wants you to succeed. He goes quickly but if you do his homework it makes it easier to stay on top of the material and to obtain a good grade. Possibly the best math instructor I have ever had. Go to the final review, and any facilitated study groups he arranges, it really helps with the final exam.
kind of a goof but overall a good professor.
LOVE this man, he is such a sweetheart and a very good teacher. he really loves what he does and i am not good at math but ended up doing really well. if you have questions just go to office and he will explain it very well. study for the quizzes by going over the problems he gives you and u r golden.
Extremely Fast! This guy, definitely knows math, but is social inapt. Yes, he is a great statician, but he CANNOT commutincate the mathematical language to normal people. His review sessions are useless. If you plan on learning something from this class, you must either teach yourself, or find a tutor. Many students failed that semester, which cert
This prof is definitely very passionate about math. Going into the class after taking AP Calc in high school, it was a bit of an easier ride for me, but I did learn a lot considering I still had a poor math background. No textbook which is awesome. Homeworks, quizzes, and a few tests. The final was extremely difficult but it definitely was scaled.
Don't miss to much of his classes because you might be left behind. If you do all the homework he asks and go to class you will be all set. Book only needed for HW everything else he gives worksheets. For all his quizzes, tests, and final he gives you a "sample" before hand, which turns out to be exactly what is on the quiz or test.
He has absolutely no faith in the students, and is very poor in communication. He offers extra help, but he says it the same way every time, so if you didn't get it the first time, good luck getting it the second or 50th time. He doesn't seem to have a second method for explaining things, which is bad for those who don't understand the material.
Took 2 courses with him and Kovitz is one of the best professors I've ever had. Really nice, enthusiastic, and will answer any questions. As long as you do the assigned work you will do well.
best professor, very helpful
BEST PROFESSOR EVER!! As long as you attend class, you go see tutor when ever something is not clear right away... dont leave thing till the last minute. If the tutor are still unclear visit his office he will be more than glad to help clear it up. He is so enthusiatic about math and has so much faith and motivates his stuedents!
Good teacher, but can be confusing, he likes to jump around a lot making students very confused and frustrated. Make sure you check your work because it might be right but he might've marked it wrong.
He is a great professor and is very helpful, you can easily reach him after class
He's all over the place. Sometimes he confuses himself! He has very little faith in the class. He keeps telling the class that he only expects a small handful to pass. Instead of helping his students, he tells them to go get tutoring.
Best professor I have ever had. Took extra time and helped whenever I had trouble. I am extremely grateful
Kovitz has zero faith in his students, constantly reminding them that he needn't bother teaching certain things that he's sure "no one would ever understand." Though he does know his stuff, he goes extremely quickly and makes it very difficult to keep up with his discussions. His answers to your questions will leave you more baffled than before.
Easy. Unclear and jumps around. He should think about retirement. Constantly looses his train of thought and leaves you asking "what..". Easy course, but make sure you are educated somewhat about the topic before you enroll or you will be LOST. As far as teaching goes, he is terrible at his job. Don't expect much out of him, but its an easy course.
Easy professor. The tests are all based on lectures.
he is the best professor i had in math. he is very straightful and organized professor. he is very obsessed to his subject. he gives five tests through the semester.
Professor Kovitz is okay, but the class is really confusing and difficult to follow along with. He jumps around a lot, and sometimes loses his train of thought and has to start all over. He's a nice guy, and he offers plenty of opportunities for help, but the class moves really fast. If you're not good at math, I'd suggest a different professor.
I'm pretty bad at math, but I've been doing well in Professor Kovitz' class due to his wonderful teaching. As long as you attend his lectures, do the homework, study, and go to the tutor (if needed), you'll be fine.
- Excellent lectures, long office hours, and in-class quiz grading. - Kind, helpful, and engaging. - Homework entirely prepares you for tests and quizzes; practice tests online.
Very weird interesting teacher. You will have to teach yourself most of the material because he is very confusing and jumps around too different topics. Gives home works and extra credit but does not boost grade to much. Final is worth 36% of your hard and is hard test. If you take this class. Good luck.
You have to see the tutor if you want to get anywhere in this class. He puts up practice tests and quizzes on his website and they are almost exactly like the testsquizzes he gives. He is also very helpful if you see him in his office, he is very willing to help. I would take this class pass fail if you feel like your having trouble with it.
CONFUSING!, goes over material superfast. Jumps around everywhere. If you are average at math, he will confuse you even more. Sometimes is lenient on grading, once he notices EVERYONE is NOT getting it. (Which happens often )
Clear presentation, no need for a textbook and gave lots of opportunity to raise your grades. I learned a good deal from Kovitz and am happy that I took precalc with him. Just pay attention and do the homeworks!
Kovitz is a very nice man. His teaching methods are old fashion & he can be very confusing. He jumps around a lot & moves very fast. If you don't have a strong background with algebra, you might struggle. The way he grades gives you a good chance of passing. Drops 2 test. Final is hard but the study guide is exactly like the final so use it!
GREAT PROFESSOR
Im a math major and i dont know whats going on in this class right now. Hes a nice man and the grading is easy but im lost. Im using the internet to answer all the questions on the homework. Probably pass/failing this class.
Very easy-going guy.
Loved this guy. Super nice. I am not good at math and got 100 on every test. Only attended a few classes. Gives thorough practice tests. They're all you need to study. Use khan academy. Tests are 92% of the grade. Homework is 8% but you only need to do 8 out of 20 assignments to get 100% for homework Also gives 6 quizes as EXTRA CREDIT!
Professor Kovitz is a easy going guy, there are three exams and then a Final. The exams are true and false around 10-12 questions each. Quizzes are extra credit and challenge problems are extra credit. He is awesome dude, always willing to help students. If you are not good at math go to si sessions and visit him in his office hours he will help!!
I took math 130 fall 2016. I never took precalc before in high school and had no prior base of calc. He ASSUMES you know everything. Test and final is your whole entire grade. I had B+ in class going into final and it drops your grade because it is extremely tough. If you don't know calc we'll DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME
Kovitz gives handouts explaining concepts, so hold onto and read those, especially for review, but with notes alone you'll struggle. His notes were all over the place, very disorganized, written messily on the board with chalk. Do challenge problems and quizzes for EC. Also he has this tick where he always sniffs and he may have a chalk problem.
This professor is very scatter brained and doesnt get back to emails. Grading is VERY confusing and he doesnt use blackboard. He also doesnt go over any homeworks so everything continues to be confusing. Its very easy to get lost if you arent in every class.
One of the worst professors Ive ever had for math. He assumes everyone is following and isnt very clear when he teaches. Jumps around to too many topics in one class and expects people to follow. The vibe of the class is just gross.
He goes a little fast when explaining the material and his lectures have no flow to them, so you'll have to pay full attention in class to understand what is he saying. Homework is 6% of the grade and the tests are 32%. DO NOT FAIL THE TESTS, otherwise your grade could be dropped two letters. He's caring and helpful during his office hours.
The way he setup the homework and the practice tests, you can really tell that he cares and wants his students to pass. Go to his office hours if you don't understand the math. Youtube helps too.
He is a very nice man, the only thing is that he goes too fast that I cant keep up. If you are used to going over a topic and then having homework on that topic for that day, dont expect this class to be that way. You will have the homework first, get graded, then go over the topic. Google is whats helping me get through this class.
He teaches too fast! So fast that the majority of the time you wont understand much. His tests and quizzes are so hard! Dont get me wrong he is a very nice man but good luck on passing....
Definitely a nice guy, but a terrible lecturer. Most of the students can't follow along what's he saying. The HWs and quizzes get you ready for the tests, but I used youtube to do everything because listening to his lectures was pointless. Thank god I took the pass/fail.
GO TO CLASS AND SI SESSIONS. You will struggle in this class. You have a test or a quiz almost every week. He also gives challenges problems but those are also hard. He was the better teacher put of the two that taught math 130
DO NOT TAKE THIS MATH TEACHER!!!! The worst math teacher at UMB. He doesn't use a textbook at all, he goes super fast when lecturing. I can't understand him sometimes, because he does this ticking sound. You have 6 tests and a final, and the final was hard too. Halfway through the semester, half the class withdrew the class. I pass/fail the class.
Ok so I was terrified when I saw this professors reviews but have ended up doing very well in his class. The key is to do his practice tests on his website and they will be very very similar to the exams. There is 5 exams (lowest dropped), the final and homework. The quizzes are easy and extra credit!
Kovitz is an easy-going professor who wants his students to succeed. He always pauses to make sure everyone gets what he's teaching. One of the better math teachers I've had at UMB. Good pace, plenty of practice.
His grading criteria was a little difficult to understand at first. He's very kind and caring, although a too quick and awkward in lectures. There's an opportunity for extra credit - if you do all of them, it brings up your grade a significant amount. 4 Exams, the lowest grade is dropped. Cumulative final. He does review sessions and practice exams
I took Professor Kovitz last semester in Fall 2020. It was a little hard to understand how he grades the homework and assignment. I highly suggest everyone in this class to go to his office hours. It would be really helpful for you. He is generous. Take advantage of quizzes (quizzes are kinda extra credit) - You gain points, but not lose points.
Professor Kovitz is really nice person. But his class is too boring, hard to understand what is he saying most of the time. He is pretty chilled but if you don't have prior knowledge to the class is going to be tough. I took a pass/fail and I hope i will never have to take it again.
NO SCHEDULE. Hard to tell when anything is due/there are tests. I don't recommend taking this class if you have a learning disability. Overall he's clearly very passionate about statistics, but he's very all-over-the place with what he's talking about and goes super fast. It's really difficult to know which points to prioritize while note-taking.
Don't skip class because he goes over his notes and problems, so I didn't touch the book once. He assigned homework once a week, real easy, covers the stuff he taught. He is pretty fast, so be a fast notetaker lol. He says the corniest things sometimes, so it keeps you engaged. Go to the review sessions for every test. You'll ace them. trust.
Come to class & take notes, do all the homework, and take advantage of all the resources he gives you, and you will 100% succeed. Very fair professor; lets you drop your lowest test, gives plenty of bonus quizzes, and a ton of practice/definition sheets that help. He may seem intimidating but he is a very nice guy that will help you whenever.
Sheldon is one of the more peculiar teachers. He's a great teacher, but there are a few things that hold him back, such as his handwriting being somewhat hard to read if you're not at the front of the class. Also, participation matters a lot, and there are review sessions you should go to before the test, it'll help.
This professor is very chill and has a laid-back attitude. His class is only graded on 3 tests and 2 quizzes (both of which are extra credit that are added onto your final grade). I didn't do too well only because of the final, but all you have to do is just pay attention in class, seek help from tutors if needed and you will be okay.
Kovitz knows his stuff. He's a fast lecturer, but provides outlines of each unit with everything you need to know. Practice quizes and exams mirror the actual thing. All homework and quizes are curved by 25% and count as extra credit. Attendance and buying the book are musts. If you respect him and do the work, there's no reason you won't get an A.
Go to class, put in the effort and you will get an A. He makes everything extremely clear and offers a lot of extra credit. The tests and quizzes are almost identical to the practice ones. There is no reason you should even get a B! He is extremely kind and knowledgable, I would take his course again.
Relatively standard stats class. He's a solid instructor, and while his lectures can drag he does a good job getting the point across. Grading was based on homework assignments, a few quizzes and tests, and the final.
