Dry, boring, no real world experience
His is a very strick teacher and the class is hard. He is willing to help if you ask. He tests on what he teaches. a no nonsence teacher. but is a good teacher.
He's hard, but fair. Pretty boring, but the solutions to the homework are in the accounting lab and the quizes are easy. The tests are exatly what he teaches. Study the homework problems and the handouts he gives for tests.
He is a good teacher, alittle dry, but so is accounting. His quizzes are just what he taught. Do the homework, pass the class.
Has a bad reputation but in reality he's a real fair teacher. Tests on what he teaches. Not a boring teacher it's just the material that's boring. Very demanding but has a real interest in helping the student succeed. This won't be the easiest A but getting one is still possible. Good luck!
"Sheldon" as everyone calls him is very hard. He knows is stuff but he doesn't have real world experiances which makes the examples in class boring because they come stright from the book.
Guaranteed to fall asleep in his boring mono-tone lectures. He is very anal about class attendance, etc. Other than that he is a good teacher and pretty helpful. You have to keep on top of everything to get an A but it is possible.
Very hard teacher. Explained things well, but tests were hard.
if you like a geek for a teacher....here he is! concepts are well explained, i can't lie about that, but this is the most painful class in the Accounting program at UVSC. I usually score 80's and 90's on tests and i get 50's on his tests because I'm lucky. trust me, no one would take this class from sheldon if he wasn't the only teacher.
Very good teacher. Difficult but great. Sheldon Smith is somewhat of an Accounting nerd, but he knows his stuff and teaches it very well. I would take him again because I learned so much.
very hard topic but not a better teacher for the job. some say no real world experiance.no problem this is an achidemic topic.you need to understand exacts, not generalities. real world teachers are vauge and often are even in a more narrow application because they generally teach on their organizations experiance not the AICPA or the FASBE.

Prof. Smith is a very good Accounting teacher. The tests are extremely hard and the class is painful to sit through, but I have learned far more this semester than previous semesters. He counts tardies and absences on your grade so beware.
Do not take this class unless you HAVE TO. This class is unnecessarily tasking and frustrating. I spent too much time preparing for his class, only to receive barely passing grades. Tests cover a ridiculous amount of subject matter. At first, it seemed like there would be a lot of class participation, but it quickly became boring lectures.
Great Teacher. Explains things well and makes accounting as interesting as it can be. He expects alot out of his students. Tests are hard, but not impossible. I would take another class from him anytime
Never miss a class. Every lecture is necessary. I learned so much from him, but when registering for other classes, take EASY classes when you take this one. He expects a ton of study time.
This class is challenging but I think prof. Smith is the best person available on campus to teach it, he sets his class up so that if you try you will be able to pass but you are going to have to do some work. He is very fair and there are never surprises, you know what is coming and when, I would recommend this teacher
Best teacher! I’m very impressed with his teaching abilities. He teaches so that one understands and comprehends the material.
This class was not as hard as 3020 but still required a good amount of effort. The subject material is difficult if you don't put a lot of time in to the class. Sheldon is a great teacher and will help you if you ask.
if you prefer a professor who's spent their whole career in the world of academia & has NO real-world experience, then this is your guy. on top of that, he makes this useless class time-consuming and difficult.
Professor Smith is a very good teacher. He really wants students to succeed. He goes out of his way to help students. The tests are very challenging, and the homework takes a significant amount of time. FYI, If you don't like accounting, don't take accounting classes.
Acc-4020 is not much harder than intermediate accounting, but it depends on the individual. Professor Smith does a good job of clearly presenting the material. I would recommend him to anyone. He focuses on whats important and skips the rest. This class requires work, but is very useful for accountants.
Speaks in monotone and takes roll everyday. If you miss class he will lower your grade. He is very boring and needs to learn how to fluctuate his voice. He is hard!
Always prepared. Organized. Fair. It is a constant lecture each class, needs to allow for more class discussion but there is a lot of material to cover in one semester. Use his handouts to prepare for exams, very helpful. Willing to meet with students and wants you to succeed, but expects you to work hard.
Great instructor; always punctual and focus. Always responded email and phone calls timely. Explained class and repeated concepts when they were not clear. His exams were very fair according to his teachings. He is a great teacher if you are a great student.
While not easy he will help you out to the best that he can. The examples are very helpful and his tests are no surprise but you need to study for them.
Tests are no surprise the are on what he teaches. You have to come to class and you have to study. Gives examples in class that really do help. He is willing to help meaning he cares, while not a teddy bear he will met with you and help you succeed.
Awesome teacher that goes the extra mile to help the students. Very tough material though.
I think he is my favorite professor, i'm not just saying that. He is an accountant that knows how to teach. I don't think any other prof could teach the material that he teaches as well as he does. There is one draw back, I don't know if it's the material or his voice but sometimes people fall asleep in class.
The best accounting professor at uvu. Pay attention always. He doesn't waste time like most do.
Sheldon Smith has well strcutured lessons, provides appropriate help materials, respons well to all students questions and keeps his material current in the Accounting world.
Sheldon is a great teacher! I enjoy going to class because he doesn't waste your time. The class is very challenging but his enthusiasm about the subject makes class likable. The tests are HARD! Study and stay up to date on all the stuff and you should do ok. I wish we had more professors like him at uvu.
Professor smith is an awesome teacher. He is so helpful, and very knowledgable on the subject. I was worried about this class because of how difficult kevin smith is but sheldon is a tiny bit easier and that is only because personally I think he is a better teacher. Smith is a great asset to the accounting major at UVU.
Professor Smith is a very knowledgeable and quite a good lecturer. He lets you know what is expected. The class is extremely difficult, but that is more because of the subject matter. This course is required if you are going to graduate school. I worked extremely hard for my not-so-good grade, but learned a ton.
Extremely difficult and goes over material extremely fast. Has office hours where you can meet. Attendance is mandatory. You can get a 100% on homework, attendance, projects, etc. but do poorly on the tests and it will kill your grade since they are worth so much. I really wish UVU would get another teacher to teach this subject. Book is terrible
Tests are long & hard. His lectures are monotonous and never gives real world examples. You can boost your test scores w/ perfect attendance and participation, but to get full participation points you need to interrupt EVERY lecture to share an example from your life/experience otherwise you get 75-80% by default. So be a chatterbox and kiss butt.
Having just received my MAcc from the University of Utah, I can honesty say Sheldon prepares you better for graduate school incredibly well. UVU students were constantly ahead of other students because of the preparation Sheldon provided He is tough, but know it is well worth it.
He is willing to give detailed help if you go to his office or email him. Go to class, read, take notes, etc, and this class is doable. DO NOT get intimidated. I was so intimidated by this class but hard work was all I needed for a good grade.
Hard class but his notes are very helpful and make the class easier. Stay on top of the material and ask questions when you need help.
First off class time is completely useless to anyone who does not learn audibly. There is close to no interaction, he gives you next to no time to work out in class examples on your own, and solicits little if any interaction from students. He will find the most minute flaws in student's work to avoid giving a 100 on anything. He is half robot.
Monotonous, no real world experience, detail obsessed, inflexible, boring, cannot be wrong,
Prof SS is the real deal. If you study hard and do your homework, you will do well in class and also later in your career. (making 250k +/yr here...)
Professor Smith talks a lot. It is very hard to follow. He assumes common knowledge and it is sometimes difficult to read all the material before going to class. I would have rather studied on my own instead of wasting my time attending class. If you want to succeed in this class, disregard professor Smith's methods and go to the lab to study hard.
He will help you if you need it, but if you start to get behind you will have trouble catching up.
I had him a couple semesters ago and he was a great teacher. Sheldon was very personable and answered all my questions. He is a pretty tough teacher you, but learn more than what you'd ever imagine in the subject. He definitely prepares you for graduate school. He is the reason I can get most of my subjects now being in graduate school.
Enjoyed the class!
Don't be scared of Sheldon or this class; work hard and you'll get the grade you deserve. Go to every class and take really good notes, read every chapter, and study extra for his tests. Be ready for the first 3 chapters. They are the hardest chapters to learn, so be ready to dive right into the class.
Sheldon is a great teacher but 3020 is a really hard class. If you go to class, take good notes, do all the homework, and study hard for tests, you will do fine. If you are struggling with a concept, he is very helpful if you go see him in his office. He will curve the class at the end of the semester if the averages are too low.
Professor Smith is a great teacher. His classes are difficult, but he makes them worthwhile. His tests are really difficult, but if you prepare for them they are manageable to pass. If you read the book, go to class, and do the homework, you will pass the class and really enjoy his teaching style.
Professor Smith is a top notch professor! I am now making 200k+ less than 8 years out of college.
70% of the class failed the test. When the majority of students fail the test, then the problem is the professor. He either created a horrible test, or he is a horrible teacher. UVU needs to get rid of teachers like this.
Sheldon is an awesome teacher. He cares about the students, and wants them to succeed. This is a tough class, but if you buckle down and do your part you'll get the grade you deserve. Several people in my class did not pass - but for the most part it was lack of effort.
I really like him! The materials are already hard, but his lectures were very organized and clear. If you actually come to class and take good notes (and do the homeworks on time of course), you should be fine. Make sure to go visit him in his office if you have any question. He is very caring of the students who are working hard.
Sheldon is probably the most organized instructor I've ever had, but his lectures are way too fast. He needs to slow down during class time and let us do work-out problems in groups since the course material is very rigorous. I would advise going over the homework problems again while studying for the tests. Good luck.
Professor Smith was an amazing teacher. You'll hear of students doing all they can to avoid his class, but he really isn't that bad! He's a great guy teaching a super hard subject. Tests are hard, but passable if you study the homework, read the notes, and review problems he goes over in class. Put in the work and you'll get a good grade.
You don't really have any other options for teachers so just try to make the best of it. If you don't go to class you will NOT pass, he does attendance and tardies like your in high school. Homework is not too bad but the tests are a joke. He won't use the computer so homework is a physical copy and no slides are available if you miss class.
Sheldon is awesome. The subject is tough, but if you practice the homework, study his handouts, and read the chapters, you can easily get 80% on his tests. He is very clear with what you need to know. He also does a lot of in class problems which are super helpful!
Great professor, good knowledge of the material. Anyone who thinks he is unfair is not suited for a career in Accounting
You're never surprised with this Professor. He is incredibly organized so you know exactly what he wants on each assignment and when it's due. The content is kinda tough but if you take good notes and do the homework you'll be fine. His lectures /homework cover exactly what you need to know for the exams.
This was my second time taking Sheldon. Sheldon is a great professor and is very organized and clear about his expectations. The subject was hard - though I feel he does a great job preparing you for the exams, though you do need to take the time to practice the homework to ensure you understand.
All my professors have been rock solid (and cool), but Sheldon takes the cake. If you're taking 3000+ level accounting courses, you've reached the point in college where you can't just slide by, you have to work hard even if you're "smart". He is prepared and thorough. If you're serious about working in accounting, take Sheldon's class.
Sheldon is an excellent professor! He highly values student participation. You won't get all of the participation points if you don't ask questions in class. He seems intimidating the first day but by the end he is really awesome. Tests are tough but they are only 60% of your grade. Study his class notes and in class examples for test.
Good guy. Accounting was very hard for me, did very bad on all the test, but Professor Smith was kind enough to help me pass his class.
He is very organized and prepared. His exams are difficult, but if you study the in class examples and homework, you should be well prepared for his exams. He does not use PowerPoint, instead he uses the whiteboard to explain the materials, which I found useful. Overall, it is a tough class, but if you study enough for it, it will be doable.
Expects a ridiculous amount of studying. His guideline in studying for exams is: "re-read all the readings you have been assigned and go over your notes". No study guide provided. No inkling on what even will be on the test from readings. Takes stupid pride in being a "hard professor". Avoid if possible.
Rude. Curt. He doesn't treat people he views as unimportant with respect. I did fine in the class but he can be incredibly mean and outright terrible to other employees and students.
This class is hard. You have to put in the work. To pass tests, read the chapters, his outlines, practice over and over again the problems/exercises until you understand them, and prepare in advance if you need to. Average test scores were in the 60's, but if you do all the assigments, go to class & participate, these points can boost your grade.
I have never had a more organized, prepared and thorough professor in all my time here at UVU. He is anxious to help you with anything you need if you ask. You WILL need to work hard and take ownership for the grade you want. If you lack a good work ethic, do not take this class. Poor reviews most likely reflect poor work ethic of the reviewer.
ACC 3020 was reasonable. ACC 5020 murdered me. Put it this way, all of the "A" students that took Sheldon from ACC 3020 go and take his ACC 5020 class. If you want to be challenged, then ACC 5020 will challenge you. Took up like 80% of my workload for the semester.
Professor Smith does a good job at teaching the material and if you come to him for help he will help you. However, this class was easily the most difficult class I've ever taken. The material is challenging and if you want to pass with a good grade you have to do great on exams (he doesn't give you any useful study tips).
He is known to be have the hardest classes in the accounting program at UVU. Very lecture heavy and looks for very specific info in his tests and quizzes. Make sure to take good notes. Overall very difficult class, but passable if you put in the work.
I didn't get the best grade in this class, but I would totally take this class again. Professor Smith is great. The class is insanely hard, but you will learn a lot. The professor is very organized and has a great setup for assignments. You will need to give a lot of attention to this class, but I thought it was worth it.
The workload in his class isnt too bad. What makes this class difficult are the exams. Averages are in the 60s. The homework is what will help you understand the stuff so make sure to do it correctly and read in the book or ask him in class. Overall, hes not as scary as hes made out to be tho he could def work on being approachable.
This class will make or break you. He isn't nice or understanding when trying to communicate with him, and doesn't try to work with you to help you in any way. It is impossible to figure out how to study for his exams, those who pass with flying colors had to have cheated somehow. I wish UVU would hire another teacher to give students a chance
Here is the thing. This class is hard and the course material is hard. But Professor Smith is really great. His lectures and in class is vital and so helpful. He is SO accessible and wants to help so much. You can do it, you probably won't get an A but you can defiantly pass this class and Professor Smith will help you 110%.
This is a tough course. I worked really hard in his class and I went to his office hours, which helped me understand the example problems better. His tests are tough, but he does a curve at the end of the semester for everyone's grade. He curved my grade from a C- to a C which was nice. You have a few quizzes, homework assignments and 3 toughtests.
I heard a lot of horror stories about this course and professor. While it was a very difficult class, if you put in the work and use the resources Professor Smith provides you, you should be just fine! The example and homework problems and chapter outlines will prepare you for the exam! Professor Smith is also eager and available to help you!
This is such a challenging class. Paying attention and following him is hard because he talks so monotonely. If he wasn't the only professor to teach this class I definitely would not have taken him. Most of the class averaged a 67% on the exams. There is no reason for the tests to be as hard as they are. He curves slightly but not enough.
This class was extremely difficult for me. Professor Sheldon is actually a nice guy and willing to work with you but the material in this class is brutal. Professor Sheldon has a very specific way of teaching that I didn't particularly like. Its 100% lecture.
Sheldon Smith is a phenomenal professor. The class is super organized so you know exactly what is expected. Professor Smith explains everything in detailed lectures. He is also available to give extra help during office hours or by appointment. You must attend class and work hard if you want to succeed in his classes, but it is totally doable.
This class is hard but Smith does a great job teaching a tough subject. He grades the homework super leniently. I got 100% on all my homework and projects even though I struggled to know the material. GO TO CLASS, it will help. He also has videos on canvas of him doing the example problems which are super helpful
This class is tough b/c of the material you cover. He has his lectures recorded from 2020 and they are almost identical to what you do in class. Definitely recommend watching those 2020 lectures before class and taking good notes instead of reading the chapters. You'll be able to pass for sure. The three tests are tough, study hard!
ACC 3020 is a tough class because of the subject matters it covers (Bonds, Investments, Leases, Taxes, Pensions, etc...) but I didn't think the exams were as difficult as people said they would be. Come to class prepared and ready to participate, and do lots of review for the exams and you should do great!
He needs to retire. The material would be so much more accessible to students, if he would allow excel. He requires you buy a specific calculator, but the use of it is confusing and easy to mess up on without knowing. The class material is HARD. He ignores questions until the end of the problem, so getting stuck in beginning ruins the class.
I would rather go to prison than take this class again.
Glad he's retiring. He doesn't know how to use technology, which makes homework annoying for no reason--for once I miss McGraw Hill.. He only verbally lectures all of the content. No excel on exams....but we have to use it for homework and projects? His teaching style is outdated and hard to follow. Wish I had a different professor.
