For someone with such an extensive vocabulary, you would think he would keep a lid on the gratuitous swearing. His lectures are unconsciously belittling.
Solomon is one of the MOST humbled humans I know. He does NOT talk himself up, the truth is just the opposite, he often pokes fun at himself. Abrasive? If you ungrateful mites were in my class, I would be. Grow up.
Some students seem to think that he shouldn't try to cross that professor/student boundary and share a little about his personal life, but they've probably just let themselves get too conditioned to a strict academic environment. humble, nice, informative
so very overrated. i never got the appeal.
Egotistical, unclear...if he hates Skidmore so much, why is he still there? He can leave again anytime!
He's kinda crazy, but if you get over the pot persona, you actually can learn quite a bit from his class, just as long as your not highly allergic to 8:10 classes.
Lack of respect is pathetic but typical of the spoon-fed to write something so slanderous w/out regard to consequences. Truly gives all he can to connect to students on an adult level. Gives more than regurgitation of text. Expects thinking.Too much work&
This man is a gem. He is helpful, conscientious, humble, and in my opinion, a rare blazing genious. The people who slander him are, for the most part, presumptious ****s, which does not surprise me as our school is full of these.
I can't believe you guys can't see past a speech pattern to assess whether or not someone's ideas are compelling. How shallow has this school become? Solomon's unique approach to psychology is insipiring, and we are lucky to have him.
He's always availible and helpful. He's very smart but also down to earth.
I thought the purpose of this sight is for the students to rate the Profs...why does it seem some of these recent comments singing Solomon's praises appear to be the droning of Solomon himself?
He's hilarious, he's smart as hell, only problem is how early the class is
Sheldon is an amazing teacher and mentor. My Skidmore experience would not have been as wonderful with out him. He loves to teach and loves his students and it is apparent very much appreciated. I highly recommend taking a class with him if possible it
Take him for any class EXCEPT LS1. Part of his appeal is his disdain for the other professors, but that's really problematic in a class that's taught by other professors.
i love sheldon! he is brilliant and articulate and we are lucky to have him here
This guy even made LS seem interesting. The way he explained things to "our language" made them more personable. Good job dude
I haven't even taken a class with him, but he is the most engaging speaker I have heard in a long time. A crazy genius sort. Wonderful to listen to.
Believe the hype. Solomon is the****. If you're thinking of taking intro to psych, take it with him.

Sheldon got me excited about psychology as a theater/env student... at my new school, I graduated with a interdisciplinary degree of env/psych... Thanks Sheldon, I hope they still tell crazy stories about you at Skidmo'! You are lucky if you can take class with him
Don't believe the hype. He tries to be controversial, but really has little of importance to say. People praise him because he's a hippie, but he has no ability to teach so his tests are random and hard. I would stay away.
sheldon is absolutely amazing. he makes the subject interesting and fun at the same time. hes a harsh grader but its worth it because you learn so much from him, not only is he hysterical but he teaches so much at the same time. who doesnt love a mullet and a tye dye shirt every day!
The best teacher and personality at Skidmore hands down. Don't be discouraged by the early classes. Solomon is worth it. Keep on keepin' on Sheldon.
Awesome class. end of story
Very engaging, amusing, funny, all the things you here. But be forewarned, you need an almost photographic memory for some of the questions on his tests. Some of them are so hard that if you ask him to clarify, he'll just give you the answer. Very fond of bell curves in testing.
He's the hottest coolest prof on campus! All of us dig him. Take a class with him and be in for the academic ride of your life.
I love this man! He's hilarious and a genius.
Does a very good job accurately explaining the course content and tying in material. Very humane and helpful. Fun to listen to and able to engage an auditorium full of over 100 students.
He's very cute and very funny, and you'll be engaged every step of the way.
This class was hard. I did very poorly in it, but it was interesting.
hes seriously AMAZING!! hes brilliant, helpful, and hilarious, i guarentee youll wet your pants in his class. im taking a 3rd class with him this coming semester. you're misisng out if you graduate skidmore without having him at least once.
Amazing prof! Slightly off-the-wall but he makes it that much more interesting!
I was a freshman when he first arrived there as well back in 1985. Three of us got A's and the rest got D's in his inaugural LS1 class; "Whoa! Looks like the friendly hippie is serious!" Found it bemusing that an 18k-per-year (back then) school offered a class taught by him called "Psychoactive Drugs." He was a pretty decent guitar player too.
Sheldon is a modest, slightly-crazed, genius with a wicked sense of humor, and tells it like it is. Take the class, show up high at least a few times. Preferably every time.
Sheldon is the man. He's funny and connects really well with everyone (even if it's an 100 person lecture). He's really clear and extremely bright. Loves talking to students about anything. Dresses like a hobo (which is hilarious) and loves jamming out to music before class. Best professor at Skidmore, hands down.
had him 20 years ago, still follow his career and see him when possible
Didn't really enjoy my class with Sheldon. Everyone wants to have him so the classes are huge. He isn't very funny and he curses far too much to be cool anymore. He over explained simple topics while I was puzzled over the more difficult ones. I guess it's worth the experience and you don't have to go to the big lectures very often.
A brilliant, passionate man who cares about each and every one of his students!
Sheldon's a great guy- knows his stuff, makes it relatable to students, and is really fun to listen to. However he does a lot of talking at you rather than listening to your ideas/opinions. Hard grader, but I'd like to think it's made me a better writer. He's pretty accessible and willing to give help as well.
I recommend taking Intro Psych with Sheldon if you have any interest in psychology. I've learned a lot about mind and behavior, and this has been my most applicable class so far at Skidmore.
On the first papers ever, he gave us a pass. He said that the grades we got didn't count, and most people got Fs, Ds, and Cs. There were two Bs in the entire class. Just context for how tough he is. However, he's extremely engaging, hilarious, and insightful. He also gives good comments, but you have to have tough skin.
Sheldon was one of the best professors I've ever had. He was my seminar professor and that was one of the best experiences I've had yet at Skidmore. He makes sure you have a good understanding of material and truly prepares you for college writing. He is a tough grader but gives you a chance to redo your work with notes longer than the paper itself
such a good guy. everyone at skidmore should take a class with him at some point.
This dude is the bomb dot com, dot gov, dot edu, dot everything! As someone who does not enjoy lectures, I find myself to be very attentive in his class, and he always makes the material (which is challenging) very easy to process when he speaks. Great dude, 1010 would do again, and you need to take psych 101 with this dude.
I took his Human Dilemmas class first semester freshman year. The class was challenging because his papers are long and intensive. However, he allowed us to rewrite a paper and gave me 9 pages of feedback on an 8 page paper. He is tough but wants his students to succeed. Everyone should take a seminar class with Sheldon before graduating!
SHELDON IS WONDERFUL
My class with him had 120 or so students, whoever he made his lectures so straightforward and interesting that I much preferred that class to any of my other (also good) small-sized or discussion based classes. Grade is only based on 4 multiple choice exams but Sheldon has a real knack for making multiple-choice hard with how he phrases things.
Sheldon lives up to expectations. His classes are funny, interesting, and challenging. Really makes you think about the concept in assignments not just regurgitate answers.
Sheldon isn't strict about attendance but almost all of the things on the exam are said in class so I would not miss class. He is a very nice person and meeting him for office hours is really helpful! Definitely one of the best professors at Skidmore
Sheldon is a fun guy, but his PS101 class was huge and he recorded all of his lectures and put everything on blackboard so it wasn't necessary to come to class. Didn't like the huge class because you don't get the chance to have one on one with the professor. Additionally, the only thing you're graded on is the exams, which is tough.
Sheldon as a person and professor is great and you can tell he really cares about what he is teaching. However, you are literally only graded by 4 exams throughout the course of the semester so it is hard to maintain an A- for example. Other than that, I loved this class and feel like I learned a ton.
This course was Existential Psychology, and it changed how I look at the world. That is when you know the professor is good. The environment is very comfortable. There were only three papers for assignments, so the workload is light. However, you need to know your stuff to get a good grade, so it's hard work. Sheldon is alway available to help.
Charismatic, well spoken, entertaining. Though for all the hype surrounding, him I was a little disappointed by his class. Felt more like a lit class: most lectures and all assignments were basically just summarizing the books we read and theres a LOT of reading. Also has a few catch phrases that hell repeat over and over: ie move to differ
This class requires a lot of reading and has a lot of terms to know, but Sheldon is amazing. His lectures are entertaining and engaging, his personality is 10/10, and he makes the class seem less intimidating than the reading would suggest.
For the most part, professor Solomon is really great! He's funny, upbeat, and always makes the lectures fun. His exams are pretty difficult, but he is always available to help and he clearly cares about his students. The only reason he doesn't have a 5 is that he did use the R slur in class and doesn't appear to know he did anything wrong.
Solid
Professor Solomon is an AMAZING professor. His class Introduction to Psychology (Psych 101) was a very interesting class. The lectures were intriguing and fun to listen to. There is a HUGE amount of reading that you need to do to pass the tests though. And your grade stems only from four 50 questions multiple choice unit tests.
Incredibly available outside of class, as long as you do the readings and go to class you will get a good grade in the course. Very engaging.
Sheldon is a super supportive and engaging professor, it's obvious he cares a lot and knows what he's talking about. He is going to say something crazy at least once a lecture though. Lectures can be repetitive since they're usually just a retelling of the chapter. As long as you read and quiz yourself every chapter you'll do fine on the exams.
Absolutely great lectures and very entertaining teaching style. However, we had very few graded papers the entire semester, towards the back half, and so it was quite hard to know how you were doing in the class, and if you did not write a paper that he liked one of those times, hard to get a good grade
Sheldon is funny & laid back which is a rarity at Skidmore! Love it! One downside is that the only thing you are graded on is 3-4 exams. The way he writes questions is often vague or using improper English which can cause you to get the question wrong. Furthermore, his frequent vulgar cursing encourages Skidmore students to act even more immature.
Sheldon's attendance policy is a breathe of fresh air at Skidmore. He doesn't monitor you like a hawk and has no issue with you studying material from your dorm instead of going to lecture if you are sick or just learn better that way. In that respect, he is exceptional. My issue is with his test creation skills. Questions can be not entirely clear
Sheldon jokes that "most classes at Ivy League Schools don't have attendance policies because they're surprised when the students actually show up!" He won't deduct points for attendance which I love bc I've always found it odd that other Uni/Colleges let you choose which learning method works best for you while Skidmore forces in-person lectures
Sheldon is hilarious and not afraid to poke fun at Skidmore's culture and even its students. No one is offended because it's funny, and I think many would argue -- very true. He does seem to overuse the word "flea d-ck" in his lectures which isn't exactly a good influence on the student base who he openly admits are already quite immature.
Sheldon is one of the best professors at Skidmore, although I wish we were graded on more than just a few long exams. He isn't great at writing the questions, and I did ask him to clarify a few times during exams but he acted like he couldn't understand why I was confused. Lastly he overdoes it with the vulgar language. It takes away from his jokes
Laid back instructor but your grade is ONLY based on exams which isn't an accurate indicator of intelligence. He doesn't test you on real-world application of what we learn which would be useful to our future careers. He only has you memorize out of a textbook. I wish he went against the norms at Skidmore and evaluated us more logically.
Compared to other courses at Skidmore, this class is actually really enjoyable. You'll likely agree. I took this as a freshman and wish he would have explained to us more clearly what would be on the exams. For example: that we need to memorize very niche details from the textbook to get a good grade. Lectures alone won't help you on the exams.
I just read a review from all the way back in 2003 that stated one of the great appeals of having Sheldon as a teacher is his disdain for the other professors in the school. I agree! He doesn't pretend to agree or support the very strict, draining, and overbearing culture that is rampant at Skidmore and among its other profs. SO REFRESHING.
Sheldon is nonchalant and won't have you stressed to the max every semester the way other profs here do. While his exams are hard simply because they require good memorization, his sense of humor makes you overlook any annoyances. I wish more Skidmore professors realized that being genuine and kind goes a long way. It's very much lacking on-campus.
I like Sheldon's hands-off approach. In my other classes I've felt monitored, treated like a kid, and forced to show up even when I wasn't feeling well to protect my grade. Sheldon doesn't have an attendance policy and lets you study from your room if needed. Whatever is best for you. Great teacher for anyone with medical or mental health needs
I concur with the reviews regarding his attendance policy being great for mental health. It was for mine. Afterall, if we are excelling at the work it shouldn't matter if we have perfect attendance or not. College is about LEARNING, not attendance. Other profs at Skidmore will deduct points for it. Sheldon won't. He is a common sense teacher.
I have to agree that Sheldon's attendance policy is great and is very much up-to-par with today's society. Sadly, Skidmore is full of controlling and ableist profs (who try to hide this reality under the guise of calling it "strict"). They are more than happy to deduct points from your grade if you're late to class or miss a class. SHELDON WON'T!
Grade is only based on a few tests. Each test is 50 multiple choice questions that are on incredibly niche topics discussed in the large lectures that attendance is not required for. Need to put in the effort even though you can slide by given lack of assignments or mandatory attendance. Sheldon is funny, caring, entertaining, and knowledgeable.
I can't say that this test writing skills are great (they're not) but I can say that he isn't ableist the way a lot of Skidmore faculty is. If you miss a class, are late, or need any accomodations he is extremely forgiving and has no attendance policy which is very helpful for students who need the extra breathing room and not be stressed 24/7
I like Sheldon but the reason he seems so great is because compared to other Skidmore faculty he is. The bar at Skidmore is so very low that even a halfway humorous or autonomy respecting professor (Sheldon) is wonderful & out of the ordinary. Luckily he is one of the better profs, but we need more. Tuition is far too costly to put up subpar profs
I wish we were tested/quizzed in less generic manners than we are, but other than that he's far more decent than most of Skidmore. The main selling point for me is his attendance policy and his hands off approach. Arguably both of those are reasons to take his class to fulfill any requirement.
I quickly realised Skidmore was not the school for me so I ended up transferring. Sheldon was the only somewhat decent prof at Skidmore. The rest were incredibly bland, controlling, and mediocre.
Sheldon is viewed as "good" only because it's Skidmore (meaning the rest of the faculty are absolutely God awful). Yes, he is good compared to other faculty at Skid, but compared to higher education as a whole he isn't the best. I guess you gotta make due with what you have. I know I'm not the only person who regrets picking Skidmore college.
The only professor on-campus with a good attendance policy. Genuinely, this was the only class I didn't dread. Everyone else will jump ant opportunity to deduct points from your grade for missing a class. PS101 is the class to take if you enjoy being treated like an adult and actually feeling some freedom in college.
AMAZING attendance policy. He won't hound you or deduct point for taking some days off because he trusts his students which is how college is supposed to work. He lets you take accountability and study whichever way works best for you. This is the polar opposite of the rest of Skidmore's faculty. The rest of the faculty should take note.
The only professor on-campus who doesn't drain the happiness out of every course. Sheldon makes classes fun and relaxing. You can truly kick back and relax or even take a day off with no questions asked. His stress free environment makes you WANT to study more, simply because he isn't forcing you to. Have yet to find another prof. at skid like him.
Sheldon didn't seem to care when I pointed out errors in the wording of his exam questions. It was a bit irritating because he absolutely should care as those errors effects our grade, and you are ONLY graded on exams. Good attendance policy, but not so great exam writer. He is also extremely pessimistic when giving career advice. A downer.
He could tone down the political comments/jokes. His personal opinion isn't needed (or asked for). Let young people formulate their own thoughts and opinions. It negatively effected the course.
He isn't an amazing teacher or anything, but I was pleased with his flexible attendance policy. He is noticably less controlling than other Skidmore faculty. That was an important trait to me.
Sheldon trusts his students to do what is best for their health and academic performance ... A trait that is rare to find in Skidmore faculty (whom often take a more "I'll force you to comply" energy). Other professors at Skidmore cannot wait to deduct points from your overall grade if you miss a day. Sheldon trusts us to use our own intuition
He has modern attendance policies vs other teachers at Skidmore which is the main selling point. I got to take as many days off as I needed for PS101 and got zero grade reduction. That's how learning should be, bc afterall WE PAY for a product (their teaching) and shouldn't be penalized for not utilizing the product every single day. Common sense
He thinks that swear words and crude jokes win students over during lectures (it does), but for the money we pay... his teaching skills are mediocre. It's important to note that a lot of his jokes are very blunt, insensitive, and unfortunately he really bolsters the stereotype of Skidmore not having a serious/mature student base.
Insanely overpriced course. Sheldon pokes fun at the culture, meaning the overly institutionalized and uptight culture at Skidmore but he is very much part of that. Very basic teaching methods. Little focus on innovations in the field. Little internship focus. Little career advice. Very very basic course structure which is typical for Skid.
Like many, I don't understand why exam material isn't more straightforward. Why test on such niche details that most students will miss in the readings? I sadly took this course without reading his ratings first, so my overall grade suffered from not knowing his testing style. Illogical exam structuring, good attendance policies though.
Glad that Sheldon chose not to work with patients in a therapy setting. I truly cannot imagine entrusting his advice in a clinical setting. He is too stereotypical Skidmore/institution/establishment all while acting like he's not part of it. The only decent thing about PS101 is the non-mandatory attendance. Everything else is mediocre
