What can I say?HE DOESNT KNOW HOW TO TEACH!He gives HW on Webassign and does extremely simple problems in lec compared to the HW and tests and u end up confused. You'll have to teach yourself Physic!Goes through chapters really fast you barely have time to catch up.I dont know about others but I wouldnt take him STAY AWAY
I like him..of course sometimes I felt he teaches very fast, but everything was good and fair.If u study hard, u can get an A.I'm sure about it.
I agree that sometimes he teaches so fast, so you have to look at the book and study more to help you understand the materials. I don't really like physics, but I got an A. As long as you do all the homework online and know which equations to apply to the problems, you'll be fine. He made everything convenient for you. He's funny and cool.
he is a cool teacher. Easy to get an A if u follow the teacher says. Although his lecturing speed is quite fast that it is little difficult to catch it, test is really easy . it's only 1/3 of entire grading stuff. each of assignment (quiz through online), lab, 3 test (including 2mid-term, 1 final) comprises 1/3 of all.
He is tries to be cool but he is rather weird person. His lectures are near useless but doing H.W will keep u educated. He makes silly mistakes everywhere. he has alot going on in his lfe so this class means very little to him.
He's never available for help! The guy has several jobs, so obviously teaching is not his priority. He never step by step explains anything, he assumes that everyone understands it. If you dont have at least an A, he doesnt response to your question (half of the class agree to that.) If physics isnt your thing, take someone else!
If you take his class, you might as well stay home and read the book. You'll get more out of it. His explanations are confusing and he makes so many mistaskes when explaining. He doesn't prepare for class (basically reads the book to you during lecture), he has no office hours and he makes it clear that you are low on his list of priorities.
I took his class twice for an EZ B. lectures are not very effective. You would have to study on your own. Hw is Webassign, roughly one chapter /week and is not hard but sometimes some questions are out of this world. teacher himself has no office hours and has alot of proffesions beside teaching at nvcc. Personality is not boring but lectures are!
I disagree with other bad reviews. Those who left bad reviews perhaps did not have an effective way of study and underestimated the class. Physics is a hard subject and requires extra work for success. I followed his instructions, did homework, read textbook, come prepared before lectures and labs, and got an easy A. He's willing to help and fair.
One of the best Physics teachers I've had so far. He's very cool, funny, and fair. Those recitations were very helpful. Lectures were pretty fast but if you come prepared, do all of the assigned homework, read some examples in the textbook, you'll do very well. I took both PHY 1 and 2 with him while going to school and work full time, and got A,B.
He is professional and knows the materials very well. I like his style because he is organized and not boring at all. Earning a good grade is not impossible because on tests, he asks what he has already thought you so lets say "he is fair".Also, he is very cool and funny and does want you to enjoy learning Physics but not suffering from it.Take Him
he is boring on the lecture but the good thing is the hw and test are easy so it is not impossible to get a good grade out of his class, just do watever he says and you will be fine, hey i didnt understand some chapters but still get an A in his class so wat ya think?!?
I dont understand how these kind of people become teachers. They discourages students and make them hate school. He doesnt know Physics enough to teach it.Every lecture is a waste of time.Plus the exams really sucks he dosnt give partial credits.I mean no partial credits in a Science class is a disaster. If u planin to take his class haha God help u
I also disagree will the bad reviews. This is a very good professor. He's not perfect, no one is. He has a good teaching style, involves all the students in class and is kinda like a student himself. If your willing to work hard and learn, he'll make sure you get an A. If you just want an easy A without doing work, find someone else :)
I recommend taking this class if you're willing to make a genuine effort &/or you're premed. Do all the homework & you will definitely get an A in the course. He is always willing to help or meet with you, and he is sincerely concerned with your success. Work harder in the beginning of the course so that you have a solid grade over the semester.
Stew was awesome! I really disliked physics before taking this class and he made it very interesting and practical. He's the only good physics teacher I've ever had (and I've had several). I thought he did a great job.
The class wasn't easy nor hard. You have to study. Good teacher. I enjoyed his lectures. He really does love teaching. I am going to take 202 with him.
Stew keep it up! Please allow us to take your class at one of your gigs. Easy was very easy - if you do all the homework. I enjoyed some of his skills besides his teaching style. Overall, the class was easy!
Professor Sheldon is nothing like I read in the reviews. He was a lot harder, and a very difficult teacher. His ways of teaching is very hard to comprehend with, and btw he is such a smart ass. I don't enjoy teachers like that. Overall dont take him.
I assume that I don't understand what he teaches at all. All I study is from the book. Anyway, he is smart and helpful, sometimes very fun! I wont take phy202 with him!
he's nice, and is always available if u need extra help, but labs are soooo drawn out and he makes u do lab write ups. but he does give u extensions and extra tries on the online hw if u need it. he also drops ur worst lab grade
I took this teacher he is nothing like the reviews.worse teacher ever. DO NOT TAKE HIM. he thinks that you already know the stuff.
Stu is an AWESOME teacher. His class is challenging, and he expects his students to study hard and be well versed in the source material, but he will also spend time after class trying to help his students. Stu is the sort of Prof. who will treat you with the same respect that you show him. Plus he ALWAYS smells of Lilac and Wild Lavender! DREAMY!!
Stew is a really nice professor!!! Physics had never been my favorite class before until I got into Stew's class. He's such an incredible teacher and I would definitely recommend him.
Difficult course -- took a great deal of time to complete coursework but the professor is always available either by e-mail or on campus for any help you may need. Very rare to find a professor as willing to match his students' efforts in order to see them succeed. Do your homework and go to class and you will do well in this course.
Stu was awesome. He made physics fun and easy. He made himself easily accessible for help.
Stew is one of the best professors I have had. He is fair and always there if you need help. One of the most accessible teachers on campus. Attending lectures and completing your homework is a must if you want to succeed in this class. Physics is hard but Stew makes it easy to learn. Take him if you can!
He is the best.
Stew rocks!!! Overall he's a great professor, makes class very interesting, if you are willing to put in time and effort you will get a high grade; however, he won't baby-sit you so be serious or don't take him/physics!
Stew tries to make physics accessible to all students! He's funny and easy-going. Even though sometimes I found myself confused at what he taught, he's a good teacher overall. Do your homework and take good notes on your "cheat" sheet, you'll get at least a B! I recommend him to everybody!!
i HAAATTTE physics, cant understand it for sh*t...but stew helped a lot, he's always available for help, give extensions on hw and drops ur lowest lab grade. if u understand how to do the problems, tests shouldnt be hard. he's a super nice guy, down to earth and very helpful. he wants to see u do well in his class, u can tell.
Blaahh....had fun in this class..Though had to work hard (and i really did) but its easy to get an A. Attend the class and pay attention to the recitation (It really helps doing webassin). Extremely helpful and easy to get to. I took a six week course and still it was not hectic nor boring. one PHYSICS professor i would recommend
You'll definitely get back what you put into his class. Webassign, in my opinion, is a great way to do homework, and I thought the amount of homework assigned was very manageable. Labs are graded fairly, and your grade will accurately represent your understanding of the material. Lab write ups are completed in class, so no homework there either.
Stew is awesome...in the beginning he said he was a hard teacher but i don't think so...i took a six week class w/ him n he is superb...most of the test questions are from webassign hw assingments n plus he lets u bring a cheatsheat...as he always says "he is the most available professor on campus"...just work hard, take good notes n do the hw
I think physics is hard, but he made the subject interesting. He is very helpful and answers questions clearly. He uses some objectionable language, but knows his subject. Overall, I would take a class from him again.
Great professor. Prepare yourself for the recitation but Stew will always willing to help. Tests are not very hard, just study the homework from webassign. They are very helpful. Work hard in this class, and you do fine.
I like Dr. Soon!! His class is challenging, but he is very helpful and those who are willing to do the work will get decent grades. I don't like physics, but he made the class much more interesting than I expected.
Stew's a good teacher. If you work hard, you'll do well. You HAVE to keep up with the HW and make sure you understand the HW and recitation, that way you'll be able to do well on the test. I definitely recommend him.
For those who are looking to satisfy a pre-Med, pre-Dental, or pre-Vet Physics requirement Stew is the prof for you. He truly attempts to put Physics in a medical light by showing how key concepts pertain to these career fields. Recitation and hw were geared toward accomplishing these goals. With hard work you can be very successful in his class.
This is a very down to earth professor....The class it self is very challenging but he makes you understand it and if you work hard u will get the grade you expect. I switch to his class and it was the best decision i could have made. I really enjoyed his chats he helps everyone who wants to get help he even gives you his cell# just a kool dude
Stew is the teacher you need, not always the one you want. You must ask questions, you must attend class, and you must focus. In return, it is rewarding, fun and a great jumping off point for future classes/endeavors. Do yourself a favor and challenge yourself - it is worth the effort.
Great guy, great teacher. i was never really interested in physics (and i'm still not) but stu actually got me to pay attention and understand the topic. definitely recommend him!
Worst of the worst! You see all the good comments on this page? Well he wrote them. The lectures won't help you in the homework. He curses in class and acts bad ass. If you love studying from the book, then take him because that's all you going to do when you take him. He doesn't teach. You have to learn the subject by your self.
Just one word...HORRIBLE !
Worst teacher ever! He doesn't teach well! To anyone thinking of taking him, DO NOT!!! You will doing research online and self study all the time cause he doesn't teach!
Material is difficult. His lectures do not help with homework or exams. Poor time management. Class is 3 hours and he runs over all the time asking students to stay late. Starts labs late and expects students to make up time after class or at home. Never directly answers a question. Gives run around. 8-12 hours homework per week. Group study reccom
Prof soon is a nice guy but he is a hard grader. Homework is sometimes 15-45 web assign questions which is usually due in 3-7 days after lecture. Test is half on computers half on paper(one big problem with ten little parts). He gives papers back on time. Lectures are very demanding. You have to concentrate just to know what section he is covering
He got good rating in the beginning before I registered for class. Now that after I dropped and NOW checking back: WOW my classmates did not do so well either. I thought it was just me!!! He appeared helpful but I guess not..and too strict!!
Overall a very hard class. You'll have to study the material in your free time. His lectures/presentations aren't really connect to the hw. A very picky grader when it comes to labs(about 15 labs) and tests (2 tests). Not recommend taking him unless you're willing to work
Seriously, all the good ratings he got before were probably written by himself. His teaching style is not good. He makes you stand in front of the class and do problems. The thing is the problems don't even help with anything. Don't take this guy wait another semester and take a better professor, you wont regret it.
one.of.the.worst.professors! He's unorganized, irrelevant, random, has an odd syllabus that isn't clear/concise. questions on test are not like the book or the examples from class or the hw! has a weird grading scale, doesn't show WHY he took points off, attendance counts toward the grade but it's useless in terms of learning anything. HORRIBLE!
A REALLY BAD PROFESSOR! doesn't know what he's doing- can't teach at all! if he's the only one teaching phys for the semester, WAIT until next semester and take it w/ someone else!
I don't understand HOW he got good ratings! Avoid him at all costs! He's a nightmare! take another professor at another campus- it's worth it!
Stew isn't that bad once you get to know him, however, he really is that bad as a teacher. Physics is a really hard subject and he doesn't make it any easier. Homework questions are really hard and the book isn't useful at all (highly recommend using the internet google etc.)Study group is also highly recommended.
Stew's lectures were organized. If you did your homework right after class he was right there to help you - 10 extra hours per week is unheard of for most profs! The people who are complaining are the ones who weren't willing to work. If you listen to his pre-lab lecture, it was really easy to ace lab writeups. I would definitely take him again.
Best professor ever. extremly helpful and clear. the class breaks down to homework, class attendence, labs and 3 test wich are 80% based on the homework. its not hard to get an A, you just have to put in good effort. as long as you do and understand the homework you will pass with a good grade. also he is in a jazz band!
this is what a college class should be. physics is a hard class, no matter who your professor is. as long as you come to the lectures, which are free points, and do the homework, the class should be fairly easy. he is available for help in the science center almost everyday. come to class, do the homework, ask for help and you will get a good grade
awful
You work hard and you get what you work for. He is very fair and clear on the test and lectures. Don't expect to get an A without working hard. He is always be there to help. I love his class.
Fair teacher. Do everything that he recomends at the beginning of class and you'll have a good chance. Physics is hard no matter what teacher, but I would recommend this teacher for physics.
He is really a great prof. Phys is a hard class not matter who you have a prof. if you want to get into medical school take him. i learned valueable learning/studing skills from this guy. he is one of those guys that you might hate now but will be glade you took later on. overall he will help you not only in physics but in life.
Stew is always there to help students and he is very friendly! :) His exams are mainly based on homework so make sure you spend time on your homework to understand the material. Also make sure you take good notes from the lecture and that will help you do homework!:)
Basic physics hasn't changed much in the last 100 years or so and it's always a difficult subject. Stew actually enjoys the material and wants you to understand it. If you put in the effort, you'll get the grade. Great teacher. Will definitely get him for 202.
If you want to better yourself in learning how to prepare for the real world, than he is your guy. Yes its hard, but its physics. He will help you as much as he can but you still have to put in your own effort. This isn't high school, its college and it wont get any easier as you continue on. He will definitely help you prepare for grad school.
I have got 98.5 so far till today (one month before final). Materials are typical physic stuff! Not hard but you need to study. When I saw those stupid comments I really thought I cant trust this website. Tests will be almost identical to web assign. I think those people who put bad comments even didn?t have brain to memorize the problems.
If you're looking for an easy A, physics is not the class for you. If you're looking to learn the material and prep for your MCAT/DAT, Stew is the professor to have. He answers questions, genuinely hopes for your success, and acknowledges hard work. The subject is tough but he is fair. He is an excellent resource and I'll take him for 202.
You'll be challenged (it is physics after all) but you get out what you put in. Do your homework and you'll do fine on tests. Use Stew as a resource, and he's happy to help you. He's a great teacher and when I take 202 I'll sign up for his class.
He IS The Coolest Guy EVER. i love yhis guy. we had 2 midterm and one final. questions were identical to home works. lab was EASY and he was veru HELPFULL. he has a sence of humer which is rare. love himmm
Study the homework problems and ask questions during his office/study hours, (he usually stays 3-5hours a day helping students learn). He prepares you for graduate school. You might not like him now but you will appreciate him later on.
Physics is NOT EASY no matter who you take it from. This is a tough course but not because of Stew. Stew is very open and willing to help those who are doing the work. He answers questions and will work with you outside of class as long as you need. Read the chapter before class, DO THE HW ON TIME, and actually study for the test you can get an A.
he is the best Physics professor NOVA currently has. he is kind and helpful. he teaches very clearly and tells you since the first day what he wants from you. home works are webassign and labs are mandatory. he ANSWER all questions in lab which is very helpful. recitations are vey important to understand the material.
Stew is a great professor. If you come to every class,do all the recitation and especially try to get 100% of all the homework, you will be in a good shape. Majority material in the test is base on webassign homework, make sure you study and practice it well before the test.
Stew is a great professor. He's tough, but fair. Do the homework, study, take your time in lab and you'll do well. If you don't apply yourself/don't study, you will not do well. That's physics. Stew treats his students as adults: If you seek extra help, he takes the time for you but don't slack and expect him to jump hoops for you.
Stew will prepare you for med/dental school. You get out what you put in. It isn't an easy subject but Stew will take time to help you. Test questions nearly all come exactly (verbatim) from your homework, so take the time and study and you'll be fine. I'm glad he was my professor and physics now makes sense to me!
This class is for those who want to learn. Stew knows the subject very well and how to teach it in a way that is interesting and makes sense. This in NOT an easy A class. You must be willing to put in the effort to do your homework, complete the labs, study for the exams and participate in class. Slackers be ware! This class is not for you.
Let?s be straight, if you are that lazy you can?t even memorize 10 webassign question per on chapter, you better change your major from science to art!! I can?t believe some people come here and complain while I saw most of those didn?t do anything in the class except chatting in facebook.
Great class, great professor. Be prompt, be prepared, do all the work and you'll be fine. Attendance may not be mandatory but it's definitely necessary.
Alright, first i should say i get an Ain this class even though it was a very hard class, but this does not mean that I did great! I know you are confused, but it is true. I did not learn a word in this class.right now i cannot even solve a problem, the only reason that i got an A was because i tried to get 100% on all web assign problems, and exams
Cont:I had a great cheat sheet for my web assign exams,so icould get 100% on all,and even the A maker test that he givesin the class,i never got a good grade on them,i still turned to getA. Also, igot good grades on Labs, but that also came from my classmates helps,so all turned out great for me, but i know knowledgeable ones in the class that got B
Extremely inconsistent with requirements for labs. Lecture were cut short ~60 minutes (out of 3 hours) each week. Generally unable to answer course-related questions.
"stew" has an amazing ability to take a simple concept in physics and make it so convoluted that you'll start to wonder if you even belong in college. If it weren't for the text book I doubt I wouldn't have learned anything
Excellent teacher. very personable. Very helpful. Very demanding. Expects you to think and perform like an engineer.
Stew is probably one of the best physics teachers at NVCC but you have to work for an A. He gives out opportunities for you to boost your grade later in the year. My advice would be to try to finish your webassign HW as early as possible, that will make you a better student overall. In terms of preparing for the exams. Use study groups.
Stew is demanding, organized, fair.Keys to success:(1)read ahead,(2)don't just do webassign, do it soon so you can ask ?'s before he's moved on to next topic,(3)use office hours (he's very helpful 1-on-1),(4) INVEST time in creating your exam note sheet.I Learned a lot, felt fulfilling. Hardest B I ever earned, and I earned an A in Calc II.
If you want to learn everything from the book and come to class for a comedy show, this is your guy. Stew tends to complicates things already complicated. Do not recommend.
Stew is the best physics professor at Nova. Compared to the professor I have now for 232 I learned so much more from stew and enjoyed coming to class so much more. Stew is very helpful if you ask and although his homework is difficult, it will prepare you for his tests which are similar to the homework. He is the only prof I recommend for PHY
Stew is a great professor for a hard subject. He is very demanding and the class is difficult but if you study and review you will do fine. He makes sense of the material and skips the bs sure he can joke around at times but he teaches so pay attention in class. Recommended.
Stew is a good professor. He wants you to work hard to succeed. Do read the book, do HW, and talk to him if you have any question. He encourages you to study. He helps you to learn. Do take his class !!
I've taken this class three times now, and this one has by far been my favorite. Stew is not a talking head, but also not a useless teacher. If you go to class, apply yourself in the recitations, do each homework each week (and find out what you did wrong), you'll be solid. To excel, you'll have to do a bit more, but not more than would be expected
Stew was not helpful at all in answering my questions. I asked him several times to explain over email and he never responded. He is a terribly harsh grader and does not give partial credit. Receiving anything below a 50 is ridiculous unless left blank. However, Stew does not feel that way. I highly encourage you to take this class elsewhere.
He deeply understand materials but his method has issue. He gave problems for grp works & while you're working on your, others present their works. How can you understand other work when you even not have time to read, think, try to solve those prob. + student presentations often bad, wrong, but Soon correct by talk & is hard to grasp what he said.
2 exams and 1 final. You get to make your own cheat sheet for both. All problems (except for 1) on each exam are very similar to MasteringPhysics homework problems (solve problems out on cheat sheet). Stew is a very fun, but no nonsense kind of guy. If physics or engineering are important for you/your major take Stew to get a clear understanding.
