DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH SHELLEY. She is by far the most unorganized and unclear teacher I have had in my 3 years here. Waits to post grades until the DAY OF THE FINAL. Lots of work for a gen ed, more than my major classes even and most of it is busy work. Not to mention you have to teach yourself most of the material for flipped lessons 0/10
This is the worst teacher Ive ever had. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!
I loved Shelley in this course. So long as you do the flipped lesson, you can come to class with any questions you have and clarify any confusing material. If you are ever confused with anything, I would urge you to ask questions. She is very approachable and wants everyone to do well. I would heavily recommend her for the MAT113 course.
Shelley is one of the best math teachers i've ever had. She doesn't make you feel stupid & is willing to help but YOU have to ask the questions. Math is not something you can do in your sleep, so yes put in the work but she gives a lot of points other than tests so you can easily get an A if you do the work. An amazing person once you get know her
I took Professor Hutchinson for MAT 113 and it was the worst choice I've ever made. She's one of those people you look at and wonder how they ever got a teaching degree and if there's any way to get it taken away. She is incredibly disorganized, writes her notes by hand DURING class. Doesn't give enough time for tests/quizzes. Awful person overall.
I am nearly graduating and this is the worst grade I've gotten in any class. The workload is not only extremely disorganized but it is a bombardment, not only will you never know when somethings due but you with probably not have enough time . She gave her TA no direction so our lab was a study hall with no help. It takes A WEEK to get any response
If you thinking taking MAT113 with Shelley will be easier than taking an upper level math course, youre wrong. If you test into a higher class, just take it. The amount of irrelevant work (and almost WEEKLY group work) makes this class impossible, especially for honors students worried about their GPA.
Do not listen to the other reviews!!! This class is easy for everyone to succeed in and Shelley makes sure of it! I am by no means good at math but ended with almost over 100%... show up and do the work and you will pass easily... this class is a lot of work but it is 4 credit hours so be prepared for it to take up a lot of time!
Ms. Hutchison is the best math teacher I have ever had at any level of schooling. She makes sure everyone gets an equal chance to thrive in math, and if you need special attention along the way shell have your back 24/7! I cant even express how great she is in such a short paragraph. All in all if you can have her as a teacher do not hesitate!
She is very nice and wants to help you. I suggest, if you are struggling, definitely go to office hours. She goes over how to do math problems and makes sure you understand and have the right answer for the homework. Even when we had the switch to online in the middle of the semester, she was very helpful and the class set up was great. 6/5 stars.
Shelley is one of the best professors I've had. She's willing to help you with all homework. Theres is a lot of work for the class, but as long as you stay on top of it, it will be manageable. I felt like I was well prepared for the tests. She helped me so much and I enjoyed going to class.
Ms. Hutchinson genuinely wants her students to do well. My class was switched to online halfway through, which was stressful, but she tried to make it easier on us. This class is a lot of work and you do need to work for an A, but it's definitely achievable and the material is not too difficult. She is disorganized at times but a great person.
Professor Hutchison was an amazing prof during the pandemic. She was super easy to get ahold of & never made you feel stupid!! Although this class has a lot of outside work, if you go to lectures & office hours youll do well!
She gave lectures extremely quickly. I take a little longer to digest material and by the time I was actually getting the hang of it she moved on to a different topic. Know exactly what's due because she assigns homework on so many different website platforms. If you don't consider yourself the best at math I recommend a different teacher.
Professor Hutchison is a great professor. She truly cares about her students and will bend over backward to help you. She is always there if you have questions and holds numerous office hours. You will have some work outside of class, but it is manageable if you keep up with it. If you put the effort in, she will have your back. 100% recommend!
Shelley is pretty mediocre. I wasn't a huge fan of her. She is pretty good about explaining concepts that you don't understand. I am also not a huge fan of math, so that might be why I wouldn't take her again.
By far the worst teacher I have ever had. She is disorganized and does not explain any of the content. This class made me cry every day since the start of the semester. It was brutal and worsened my existing mental & physical health conditions. I had to WX from this class so it wouldnt mess with my GPA. DONT take this class with shelley!!
I do not think I've ever disliked math more. The content wasn't even all that bad, however this professor is. She really tried to make this class seem as "in person" as possible but she's very bad at getting back to you when you have questions and for the most part your learning yourself. She talks more about her health issues than content. RUN
worst teacher ever. Shelley says she cares, yet never responds to emails and makes 100 point tests 14 questions long. She never answers questions, and makes rounding mistakes on the test, but won't change the the grades. She made us buy a $80 book that we never use. I only passed this class because of Chegg. 10/10 would NOT recommend.
I would not recommend. She is unorganized and when you ask for help she just repeats herself. She had this horrible idea to extend test time which made my class unbelievably unprepared for the final exam. The amount of tears from this class is ridiculous. Avoid at all cost. Not worth it.
Worst math class Ive ever had. This professor is unorganized, she doesnt answer emails quickly at all, and she really doesnt care if you pass or fail. Shes a nice person, just not a good professor
Shelley was the worst professor I've ever had. She is so unorganized and doesn't actually care if you don't understand the material. The notes and study guides never reflected the quizzes or tests. She would always make rounding errors, but never fixed them. Awful class and awful professor. I passed by the grace of God.
Attendance doesn't fully matter but she checks every so often and you'll lose participation points. Try to attend, you need all the points you can get. Claims to be all about our mental health, and then proceeds to cause us mental distress. Completely inaccessible outside of class. I get she's busy, but she promises what she can't give.
I was online last semester. My roommate had the same class with a different prof and I would watch her lecture videos on top of our class just to keep up with material. She claims to be accessible & aware of mental health yet never responds to emails and acts like you are stupid for not understanding her non-sensical rants she calls teaching.
If you can take this class anywhere but with Shelley do it. She claims to be so willing to help you but it is literally not helpful whatsoever. This class is so unorganized and you will never know when anything is due. I have never gotten anything lower than an A in math and barely pulled off this B, take a different class for your own sanity.
was organized professor. Its up to you to monitor your work and check the weekly agenda on OneNote. This class is very test heavy so be prepared. Show up to class and lab/ask questions if you have questions. This is very fast pace class. If you need help go to her office hours on zoom and ask in person because she isnt the best at answering email
Shelley's class is the most difficult class I have ever taken. Even after doing everything I could to study or get help, I barely managed to get a C. Shelley wants what's best for her students, but gives a ridiculous workload, unhelpful and challenging assignments, and doesn't teach the material in an effective way.
This is the hardest class I have ever taken at ISU. There was a really heavy workload and it was really hard to keep track of what was due. The lab for this class half the time was teaching the same material a different way and it made absolutely no sense. I would definitely recommend a different class or at least just a different professor.
I cried so much because of this class. One of the most stressful classes I have taken. I ended up dropping it because I was going to fail, and now I have to take it in the summer at a Community College. She claims to "offer all the resources needed", but does NOT. Pick a different professor, trust me. If you are stuck with her, GOOD LUCK lol.
Hutchison made MAT 113 a pain. I am not a math major, and that is on purpose, but she treated us like we knew what we were doing. Her lectures were dumpster fires and I was lucky to make it out with a passing grade. There were 90 people in the class at first, but by the time the withdrawal date had passed there were like 15 of us. Save yourself.
I would love to give her benefit of the doubt but she is wildly unreasonable. She needs to fix her class and her teaching style. Theres wayyy to much work and it is extremely difficult to manage with the needs of other classes. She needs to keep in mind her class is a GEN ED and that no one cares.
the fact that she would teach another lesson before quizzes is beyond me, how are you going to teach something for a future test right before a quiz and not only confuse her students but also take out quiz time away... sucks this class sucks, the day i dont have to take math is the day my depression will go away
She is really nice, but GOD this class was so much more difficult than it needed to be. Everyone in the class struggled, and she assigns a lot of homework. Each week, there were 1-2 online homeworks, a pre-lab, a lab, a reflection, a text or a quiz, and a test/quiz wrapper. If you take this class, you will struggle. Find a diff prof if you can!
DO. NOT. TAKE. THIS. CLASS. WITH. HUTCHISON. Trust me. She's horrible and doesn't know how to teach. Blah blah blah "test anxiety" nah girl you just suck at teaching that's why everyone does so bad in the class. So much homework, very fast-paced. On my way to this class, I used to wish a bus would just plow right into me. Ended up withdrawing.
I did not have as negative of an experience with Hutchison as the other reviews. Sometimes I did not agree with how she introduced material, but other than that I thought she was very nice. I constantly emailed her with questions and she would reply every time and was willing to help, and even offered to meet with me outside of class/office hours.
Every point maters! I passed the class with 69 and thankfully she rounded to 70! Make sure you do the homework, quiz wrappers and weekly reflections! They help in the end
There's so much to keep track of and it's so easy to lose focus if you're not careful, and she follows things EXACTLY by university rules. I was on medical leave for a week and she still made me take the test with everyone else despite the fact I was still recovering and I missed the entire unit when I was absent with no way to access the materials
awful
Don't even bother taking her. Especially if you are not that good at math. The way she teaches and distributes work is so messy and bad. The work she gives and teaches is 100x more confusing and difficult then it should be. Easily, one of the worst professors at ISU. I'ms surprised she hasn't been fired or anything yet.
If you want to fail take her class. she is awful and I mean it coming from someone who isn't awful at math. Just don't take her class please trust me.
I don't know why she has bad reviews, Professor Hutchison is a great Professor. She will make you work for your grade, do not go into this class thinking you'll skate by. She uploaded every lecture to Zoom, so you could always go back and see how she did things step by step. Seek help if you don't understand something.
Take this class with literally any other professor. She made this class 10x more difficult than it needed to be. 20 minutes for a quiz is absolutely ridiculous, considering the majority of her students aren't the best at math. She's a nice person, but an awful teacher. Save the headache and take it with someone else.
Shelley is a great person, you can tell she cares however, the class is highly disorganized. I met with Shelley for many hours each week and when her availability conflicted with mine, she was willing to set up another time. Her class was unbearable due to many long hw assignments a week & only 20 mins for quizzes, & her online tools were a mess.
I loved this professor but this class had tons and tons of homework. Also, the way that she taught some of the lessons were very weird and not helpful. For this class, you had labs, participation, achieve, quizzes, and tests which I feel is a LOT. The only reason why I ended with an A is because this class was mainly review for me.
Okay professor, great person. Really cares about her students. Not the best at explaining certain ways of doing things. Tries to explain tons of different ways to do a certain thing, but can end up being more confusing. Every Friday on zoom. Use the extra credit opportunities. Making friends in the class will make or break your grade.
I think that the reviews for this professor are a bit harsh. This is a difficult class and you have to try. However, as long as you try, it's hard to fail. Yes, the material can seem complicated, but as long as you do the homework and labs you'll be fine. I went to Shelley's office hours ALL the time and she was always more than willing to help.
She was absolutely awful as a person and teacher. If you are not strong in math she'll try and diagnose you with "math anxiety"... I can't even express the amount of times i called home sobbing because of the class/ homework. All work is online and half the times they don't even have the right answers so you'll always get it wrong. never again.
She plans her classes out to the very minute so asking questions and getting extra examples is almost impossible because we must move on.She claims she wants to help us and is willing to meet with us outside but never responds to emails.Had to drop the class due to the stress and me constantly calling home crying.
She posts lectures & lab isn't mandatory at all. She assigns a crazy amount of work due especially right before exam days but it's doable. Her study guides are exactly like the exams. She's always willing to help (zoom, office hours). If you put in the work you'll do just fine. The concepts can be hard to grasp but she gives plenty of resources.
If you didn't go to class, you would most likely fail the test and the class. She went kinda fast during lecture, so you have to pay attention. But she was available for questions and help outside of class. The assignments were really hard most of the time and usually didn't get good grades on them, but pay attention and you should be okay.
Mrs. Hutchison was seriously a great teacher. She is a good teacher and wants her students to learn. It's a homework-intensive class, but it helps your grade a lot. The homework is a lot of busy work, but she also gives out A TON of extra credit. If you go to class, do your homework, and put an effort in, you can easily pass this class.
She explains everything very well, is big on mental health too. She does "Group Projects" before each new concept, and you basically have to figure it out on your own with 2 other people. That's my biggest complaint.
Hutchison is a great teacher that explains material very well, is always welcoming questions, and always willing to meet with you outside class if you are struggling however the class material in mat113 is way too much to fit in one semester. New notes everyday that you don't have a quiz or test. Feel like you are drowning all semester
Do not take this class with this professor. Super heavy work load and very hard to manage in addition to other classes. She moves extremely fast during lecture and its hard to keep up. So much homework and so many tests. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND
Very heavy workload especially when taking 5 total classes tests are hard and an ungodly amount of homework especially right before tests its ridiculous. Basically taught myself how to do the math every week. She is nice but not a good teacher.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR. She goes very fast during lectures, and thinks teaching/lecturing is throwing us in groups and tells us to figure it out when a new lesson is given. Very heavy work load, especially for homework. New notes and martial everyday and she teaches with a camera and takes notes off a iPad, that are not legible
Show up to class and participate, and you should be fine. She honestly gives plenty of opportunities to ask questions, receive extra credit, and learn the material. There is a lot of homework outside of class, but it is for your own benefit. Also, do your work on time.
she's a nice person but would throw u into groups to teach yourself new material then finally teach it at the end of class and waste time. there was an ungodly amount of homework especially around exams however there is lots of options for extra credit and she drops the lowest lab/exam/quiz grade which rlly helped. u basically teach yourself
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR. She goes very fast during lectures, and thinks teaching/lecturing is throwing us in groups and tells us to figure it out when a new lesson is given. Ungodly amount of work.
Her lectures are straight forward and if you have questions then she will answer them. Sometimes she seems annoyed by questions but not usually. A lot of the homework has extra credit attached. If you do the homework and understand it then you will be prepared for exams. She also has study guides and extra review. She wants you to do well.
Don't take her class. She taught material super fast and did not give much time to answer questions. She would go over class time. She would put stuff on the test that she talked about once or never. She would give us 20 minutes for a quiz because she spent the first half of quiz days teaching new material that was not gonna be on the quiz.
She genuinely cares about her students and wants them to succeed. She's willing to review things if someone is confused, or she is willing to work with the students outside of class. She's very good at explaining things thoroughly and with different options for how you learn best. As long as you come to class and pay attention you'll be fine!
This professor is immensely difficult to understand. I could see her improving in times to come but as of right now I would not recommend taking her math course. Her hand writing is difficult to read, you are learning new subjects every single class, and are given large amounts of homework ONLINE every day. She also never responds to emails.
Professor Hutchison is a respectful professor but is a note-heavy teacher in lectures. She is respectful as long as you put forth the effort in her class. Tests are a large part of your grade, so studying is crucial.
She wasn't the best math instructor I ever had but she's decent. She encourages people to ask questions and genuinely wants students to succeed. However, she can take forever to reply to emails and update grades, like one time she took 3 weeks to reply to my email. I really hated how she often puts us into groups though.
She was very disorganized throughout the entirety of the class. She would often start the unit of at the very slow pace. This would lead to her having to rush through the last part of the unit, and assign like three homework assignments at once. She assigns weekly reflections which are definitely a grade booster since tests are 50% of the grade.
Worst math class I've ever taken in my life. Keep in mind I'm bad at math but like when I tell you I understood NOTHING. I mean it. I could never read the handwritten notes because she would literally write in CURSIVE?? This class was unbearable and so boring. Take it with Jackie Borque instead. Trust Me.
She was so accommodating outside of class. She was working late one day and let me stop by her office for some help at like 7pm. If you communicate with her she is more than happy to help!
Worst teacher I have ever had. Math 113 is not meant to be a hard class, but it was ridiculous with this professor. Very homework heavy, gave us busy work that did not relate at all to content. Notes are all over the place. If you have this professor, you are better off teaching yourself.
Shelley tries to say she cares about students but never has time to grade and will take weeks to respond to you. I would not recommend taking her if you already have a tough time in math because you will have to force yourself to tutor. Mat113 is not a hard class but she makes it boring and you have to learn for yourself.
Ms. Hutchison was the worst professor I have ever had. The class could be very easy with the right professor, however Ms. Hutchison has a way to make it difficult. She is easily reachable if you are willing to wait weeks for an email response. The content is always ALWAYS rushed. Take the class with a different professor!
Class is very boring but super easy. Mrs. Hutchison is very understanding and accommodating to students. We did a lot of group projects that were annoying but it was an easy grade. There is a lot of homework and you have to but the book attached to Webassign.
Easy math class, good at explaining directions
She was extremely difficult and nearly impossible to contact, ignoring every email until I included the department chair.
She is ever there and doesn't want to help.
Unless you're the smartest in your class, this isn't for someone who is a slow learner.
Shelley gets a lot of bad feedback for good reason. While I do think she is caring and tries to help, often it falls flat. If you struggle with grasping math concepts I wouldn't recommend taking her class. Fridays were online which was nice, but horrible for her teaching.
Never take this class with her. Honestly not a bad math student but she made me feel stupid. Speeds through the hardest material. Terrible communication. Does group work that wastes time and doesn't deepen understanding. Avoid her at all costs
Emails were frequently unanswered, with some responses arriving in the middle of the night or weeks later. Group work carried too many points, negatively impacting our grades. She often arrived five minutes late and complained if we wanted to leave a minute early.
She really isn't that bad of a teacher, she cares a lot and tries to help in any way she can. I understand that it can be frustrating when she speeds through material towards the end of the units but she is always more than happy to repeat concepts that students may not grasp. Don't be afraid to take this teacher, I was and she's def overhated.
I heard a guy behind me say that he would need a 90% or more on the last two exams to pass with a D, I think that sums that class up pretty well. Literally the harshest grading I've ever seen for a 100 level math class. Just horrid.
plz dont torture yourself with this. NOT WORTH THE TROUBLE.
My goat. Mrs. Hutchison is super helpful. I went to her office hours all the time and she would help me as much as she could.
she's just not a good teacher. goes very fast through classes and doesn't explain things well at all. if you take this class ask for a different professor.
This professor was nice as a person but as a professor was terrible. The tests were nothing like the lectures and were so difficult. She rushed through information because she expected you to know everything coming into this class. I have had to work so hard for this class and teach myself because she doesn't teach you well.
Earned a 94. Shelley is a solid professor if you're ready for college pace(1 lesson/day). Zoom Fridays are helpful. Quizzes are at home w/notes, tests are fair w/ bonus, and final is optional. Homework/textbook don't align well(labs/study guides are more helpful). 4 group projects(1 per unit). Attendance is mandatory. Office hours can be tentative.
Horrible! She would give us problems and then answer them wrong. On every hw, in person, study guides and even exams! Doesn't answer if you reach out for help. Cancels class bc of her issues and then rushes the “teaching” the next class. She was literally 10 minutes late to our final too! doesn't teach, everyone just put in formulas on the calc!
This teacher is by far the worst teacher I have ever had throughout my academic career. She not only doesn't know some of the material she is teaching, she gives little to no bargain and she will not give you any advantage like a cheat sheet during the math final (which other teachers gave a whole paper). Take her if you want to retake the class..
Only mat119 prof to not give any sheet of equations on the final exam, close to half our class dropped, “web-assign” assignments that include problems where your answer can never be marked as correct, shows up late to every class, 10 minutes late to our final, only mat 119 prof that doesn't want to pass students that show effort in the course.
Word of advice runnnn
Overhated. She might rush through things, but she happily goes back, no matter how far, when someone asks a question. However, she has at least 1 error on every assignment, study guide, exam, or answer sheet. It is annoying when you are trying to study.
