Shes an alright teacher but tests are worth 75% of your grade soooo. unless you are really good at taking tests with a 5 chapter span, that aren't anything like the study guide that she gives out i wouldnt take this class. But she drops the lowest test grade.. the final can be one of these.
Difficult and extensive material! Power point presentations can be up to 60 slides per class. Too much information for a gened, but what else is new. Final is cumulative, run awayyyyyy!
The software used for this class and the assignments are a joke. The material isn't too hard and her lectures are very informative, but the tests are a bit more difficult than would be expected from listening to the lecture. It wasn't too bad, but I wouldn't recommend it, especially taking the once-a-week 2hr 45min class; it's a nightmare.
Dr. Whitmeyer I would say is a good teacher at oceanography. However, if you think oceanography means sea creatures and such, you are wrong. This means, tides, land masses, plate tectonics, with a little bit of sea creatures in there. Oceanography in general is boring, try to find a better gened in the cluster. But if you must, Whitmeyer is decent
I don't do anything outside of class except study for tests. In class, you have lecture and assignments. Assignments are easy to complete, but you won't get 100% on them. Tests are a bit more difficult than you would expect, but not terrible. It's definitely not hard to get a B.
She's kind of boring, but her lab activities are really interesting. Half the class is lecture, half is lab. You don't need the book. I didn't read and got A's on the tests because her tests are directly from the powerpoints. She's really nice and lets you opt out of the final if you want to stick with the grade you have at the end of the semester!
Reeeaally didn't like this class. It's extremely boring if you're uninterested in the subject & her teaching is very direct. Tests are harder than they should be but overall this class was bearable. Wouldn't recommend her or the class, but if you're stuck, you'll survive.
Really nice lady but treats the class like 1st graders. Lowest exam grade is dropped and most of the assignments are done in groups. Not hard to get a B- however, lectures are extremely boring to sit through. Wouldn't recommend for a gen ed.
She was a great professor.. so helpful! Half the class is lecture and half is group work (you have the same group the whole year). All work done in class, and the team worksheets are so helpful for learning the material. Tests are not hard, and she drops your lowest one. Class was pretty easy. I would recommend her! I think she's a great teacher!
Ms. Whitmeyer isn't the greatest teacher, and sometimes she treats the class like it's a middle school class. However, the class is really easy if you put in even a minimal amount of effort. Grading is set up so that your tests don't affect you as much if you do poorly. Take her for GGEOL 115 for an easy A or B, depending on your effort.
I absolutely loved Dr. Whitmeyer and this class! She is a passionate teacher who definitely knows her stuff. Like most classes, you do have to make an effort. Come to class and (occasionally) read the book. A lot of the readings were videos or online articles as well. LOTS of team projects, but they are easy grade boosters! :)
This GENED consists of very dry and boring material and I would not recommend taking the class. Unless you enjoy learning about faults and earthquakes. Although there are a lot of team projects which boost your grade, the tests are very difficult. Each test covers are 8 powerpoints with about 35 slides each, yet the test is only 30 questions long.
Did not like this lab. Tests were very difficult and weekly assignments were graded extremely hard. Very hard to get an A unless you devote a lot of time to this 1 credit lab.
She's a nice teacher and class is really easy because of in-class group assignments. Lectures are super boring! Tests are medium-hard but they're two parts. You take the same test twice, once solo and then once with the group. Attendance is not mandatory, but we often do group assignments & if you're not there you don't get the credit.
Sweet lady, lectures are kind of boring but not too bad. She really loves what she teaches though, she's passionate. You have team projects which is basically just worksheets that you complete with your group. If you don't show up for the team project days, you don't get credit for it. Wasn't a bad class though, pretty good for a gen-ed
Attendance is mandatory since you have group projects (a worksheet) for most of the classes. Professor Whitmeyer genuinely cares about her students and their grades. The lectures are sometimes confusing. Hardly any homework.
Its a lab so its only 1 credit but its so boring. If you ever skip you are going to miss so much and theres always class activities. She's a tough grader and boring but not the worst teacher in the world. The rock portion of the class is fairly easy but its gets way harder throughout the semester.
The lab is hard and SO BORING and shelley isn't much help.. their are activities given every week that are extensive and you basically have to teach yourself everything. The TA's grade everything and are very harsh. The tests are so hard and I feel that their are better lab teachers for this 1 credit class. Wouldn't recommend her. Like her husband.
She's a super sweet woman and I really want to like this class, but I can't. The tests are near impossible and she makes the class way harder than an GenEd needs to be. Although, she is willing to work with you if you go to her office hours
Really sweet. If you ask questions, she will give really helpful answers. There's a lot of information that can sometimes be hard to grasp or find interesting. The groups you're put in are important. You'll have lots of team projects and then will work together for part of each of the exam grades.
Two tests that are basically final and midterm. They are 60% of your grade. First test is on rocks and super easy. Second test is a little harder, but it's okay because first test is so easy. The rest is pre-labs and in class quizzes and activity packets. She was a good lab professor I would recommend her.
Dr. Whitmeyer is very kind. She really wants to see you succeed, and if you visit her office hours, she's really helpful for prepping for any test you have coming up. She offers an extra credit project which is pretty big, but if you do well on the extra credit, you can skip the final because the extra credit will replace an exam grade. Take her.
Shelley was a great professor for lab. You do 1 lab a class so you must attend to get points. There is an easy 10 question pre-lab before every class. 2 tests-one on rocks (pretty easy) and one on mapping which was pretty hard. You honestly have to work to get an A but I think she is one of the best teachers for lab (lets you use charts for tests)
Super nice. Lectures can be dull, but the material is somewhat interesting. You get assigned a team and work on projects (worksheets in class) together through the semester. Three exams - independent and team portion (material comes from PP and are all MC, but they can be difficult) and a final. An easy EC project is offered. Overall, good Gen-Ed
She's amazing!! Would definitely take her. She does everything she can to make sure you are going to get a good grade. Even allows you to have a little cheat sheet on the first exam. As long as you show up and put in some effort you'll get an A.
She talks to students like we're 1st graders. She can't seem to understand that we're 18-22 year olds, not 6 year olds. I got soo tired of the "teacher talk," like she was our babysitter. If you want to go back to elementary school and have a babysitter, take her. If not, avoid at all costs.
Professor Whitmeyer is really a sweet lady but her teaching skills are sub par at best. I usually get As and Bs and I consider myself to be pretty good at science but she just doesn't clearly explain material. When given group projects you're just expected to know the stuff, and for tests I was never really sure what to study
This class wasn't great, but I would take it again because I got an A- for not that much work. You work with a group of the same five people for your lab projects throughout the year. Extra credit is offered. The grade consists of three non-cumulative tests, a cumulative final, multiple in class team lab projects, and in class lecture questions.
Because this is a GenEd option, she knows a lot of her students are non-science majors. So she does a pretty good job breaking things down and explaining as much as she can. About once a week you have team projects which are not graded harshly, and she always helps with any questions. There are many extra credit opportunities.
This class is a hard gen ed. She is a good teacher but tests are very hard. If you go to office hours she is very nice and helpful but this definitely was not an easy A for me.
VERY EASY GENED, tests are team tests and the class is super easy!! Def recommend, she is really nice and easy and knows what shes talking about
I overall loved her. Shes so sweet and understands its a gen ed. There are group polls each class that count towards ur grads, so dont skip. Theres a lot of group projects which i personally loved because i liked my group (and they knew what they were doing). Definitely a lot of studying outside of class. Tests are MC, 80% individual, 20% group
Dr. Whitmeyer is a super sweet lady, but this is an insanely hard course. We learned an extreme amount of material every lab, and were expected to go to weekly review sessions to figure out the material. Everything was graded harsh too. She means well, but this has been my hardest class yet at JMU. A ridiculous amount of work for only one credit.
Professor Whitmeyer was obviously passionate about the course material. She tells you at the beginning of the semester that your exams are easier the more you engage during the lab, and she's right. There are tons of review sessions, and she'll meet with you one-on-one if you need it. She will grade kind of tough but not unfairly.
Dr. Whitmeyer is a great professor! She gives you clear guidelines on every aspect of the class. Her lecture ppt is posted before class if you want to get ahead. The team projects are super fun and easy and really boost your grade! She also took us on a field trip canoeing for extra credit points--super hands on and fun. Also there's NO HOMEWORK!:)
Ridiculously hard for a one credit gen ed. She has a doctorate and clearly doesn't like teaching this lower level class. She grades harshly, even TA's admitted she took off more points than expected. Took her husband for GEOL110 lecture and got an A but this class is completely different. Take ISCI and ISCI lab instead if you don't like science.
Sweet lady, but does not know how to teach. Everyone in my class was confused all the time because she never explained anything thoroughly. I had to teach myself a lot of the material, which was much harder than anticipated.
Dr. Whitmeyer is a very nice lady but she does not know how to teach a gen ed level class. She speaks as if all of her students are Geology majors and already understand major concepts. Her powerpoints are posted, but consist of confusing diagrams and pictures with little to no words. Group labs help your grade, but overall a difficult class. :(
Dr. Whittmeyer is a pretty solid choice if you have to take GEOL 211 for a GenEd, the class is lecture heavy, but some classes we would have group projects which were relatively fun and easy. Be wary of the polls she takes almost every class if you skip they can bring down your grade. I did not even open my textbook so I wouldn't bother buying one.
tests are way harder than they should be for a gen ed. makes you work with pre-assigned groups multiple times a year, which can be good or bad depending on your group.
Shelley just simply doesn't know how to teach. She talks to us like we're all geology majors, so she rarely defines basic things as she's talking about them. Her powerpoints are vague and she draws on them during class, so you don't have that to study unless you print them out before class and draw with her. I would avoid unless you're into geology
3 tests that you take first by yourself then with a group, but it's not helpful if you have a group that doesn't care about their grade (they're assigned btw). Lots of connect homework which is easy. Poll everywhere questions give you some attendance credit. Powerpoints aren't helpful just reading them, make sure to take notes or else youll be lost
TBH students should get paid for taking this class. Class is boring and tests are hard.
Very sweet, but incredibly confusing. She takes off points for no reason and does not give any feedback. Never explains how to do the assignments, and the TAs often gave me wrong answers. The exams may seem easy when preparing, but she includes topics on the exams that we did not even discuss. Had to teach myself everything outside of class.
For a 1 credit lab it is a little more difficult than you would want it to be, but overall really solid choice. Easy class if you pay attention and go to review sessions every once and a while. She is very kind and has good explanations and TA's to help you. If you want a good grade I recommend not skipping. Offers extra credit at end of semester.
Only had her for lab but my friends in her lecture made it sound horrific. On the first day she made us do a hard lab with math. Shes a nice lady but doesn't explain the labs very well and expects you to know material the even if you didn't cover it in lecture yet. I did well in this class, but I put more effort into this lab than my major class
This class was pretty easy during the first half, but got a lot harder after the midterm. You get to have a notecard on the rocks quizzes/tests. Its only once a week which is nice and we usually got out early. The TA's were pretty helpful as well. Other than that it was a pretty boring class.
Interesting if you aren't a science major; just random worksheets every class after the rock unit. If you study for the 2 exams you'll be fine
Lots of in-class assignments that are easy A's, but if you miss class you won't get credit. Boring class, but she tries to keep it interesting. Very friendly and willing to help
Dr. Whitmeyer is alright. She isn't great at explaining concepts, and clearly favors her Geology majors. The lab isn't super hard as long as you put in the time to study outside of lab, especially for the Rocks and Minerals exam. I really enjoyed the lab, but I had to do a lot of work on my own. Not a bad choice, but there are surely better ones.
I was excited to take geology and now I dread it. She's not the worst teacher; she has a few good moments but don't take her if you can avoid her. The homework takes me two hours and no matter how long I study, I can't pass the tests. There is also wayyy to much work for a gen ed class.
Shelley is super sweet but her class can be tough. She goes over material in lecture you're supposed to have already read and learned prior so if you don't you end up lost. For an intro gen ed, it has a lot of work. However, she is very caring and tries her best to help students. Nobody in my class was a geol major and it showed.
Best Geol110 Lab teacher at JMU. Made everything super easy to understand and gives you cheat sheets to use on the midterm.
Was looking forward to taking geology, but her lectures were pretty boring. Nice professor, but overall the class was pretty hard. If you dont study, you will not do well in this class.
Great choice for lab. As long as you go to class and ask questions and try you will get a A/B. Tests are straightforward and you have to study but she is very easy to talk to and will help explain anything you need.
It could be because I had her online but it was a very independent class. She is the most caring professor I have had but I saw her like 20 min a week for lecture. The rest was independent or group assignments. I still got an A but only because of quizlet. Tests are open note, and she drops lowest assignment grades.
Took this class online and it went okay. Although she doesn't teach much, she will answer any question you have or anything you don't understand. She gives lots of extra credit and opportunties as long as you ask, so get close / friendly with her and she will boost your grade.
Dr. Whitmeyer was a great teacher for GEOL110L. Although attending class online wasn't mandatory, it definitely helped if you went because you discussed with other people. For the later weeks of labs, we were able to go over our labs with her and retake for higher credit. Exams were very straight forward:)
She is super nice and doesn't give a lot of out of class work. For the first semester you have weekly quizzes on memorizing rocks which was hard, but second semester it was assignments each week where you'll for sure get a 100%. 2 big exams. She also gave out one extra credit lab.
She explains things really well, and the material is pretty easy. On the midterm and final she let us bring in a cheat sheet which was really helpful. We just did weekly assignments in class that were graded plus the midterm and final.
She is a nice person but her in-class assignments and tests are very difficult. Her slides are very bland and you have to basically teach yourself the material and she zooms through her explanations for each slide. Nice woman but bad teacher.
Dr. Whitmeyer is a very sweet lady, but a very horrible teacher when it comes to this class. Her lecture slides are very bland with no information on them, and basically expects you to teach yourself. The tests are very difficult, she makes review sheets but none of that material is on the tests. In class assignments are confusing, but helps grade.
She gives you all the information you need during the lectures for assignments and exams. If you go to class and take notes, you will be fine. Don't take this class if you don't want to put in any extra effort. Dr. Whitmeyer is very kind and caring and wanted everyone to do well. Gives study guides and is accessible during office hours. Recommend!
Don't take this class if you want to learn about ocean animals - it's very much about rocks and ocean formation. Doctor Whitmeyer is super passionate about it, and while the content can be tricky, everything on the exams are from class notes. She also gives extra credit and graded class assignments that are easy to get 100% on.
Dr. Whitmeyer is a nice and caring professor - she only wants to help her students succeed. Tests were alright if you study (especially the review sheets). Attendance isn't mandatory, but you may receive extra credit on tests if you attend lectures regularly.
She's horrible not really compassionate
Dr. Whitmeyer is a phenomenal lab professor. She's extremely easy to talk to, and is overall a really charismatic person. The class itself is heavy on memorization, but that's a class thing, not a her thing. Allows notecards for every quiz, and a large notecard for exams. Lots of TAs and out-of-lab review sessions available.
she is very nice and care about her students passing. just show up to class and do the work; she will help you if you ever need help. use the review guides to study for tests and you're set.
Whitmeyer was not helpful at all. I never knew what to believe because the TAs would contradict what she said and vice versa. She would talk for 5 min and expect you to understand and then she leave you to struggle to do that lab. Not an easy A. She expects so much from you. DO NOT RECOMMEND.
She was super nice and easy to talk to. I just thought she was pretty boring and her TA's more than carried the class. They seemed to know more about the subject than she did. I didn't think it was a hard class, but it could have been more interesting considering it was a lab and we actually got to do something besides take notes.
Talks about something for 10 seconds and then gives you a quiz on it expecting you to understand it. Teaches as if everyone's a geology major. The TA's are constantly giving different answers than her so you never know what to believe. If you miss one class, you'll be weeks behind.
Had her for lab and lecture. She is very helpful in what I personally found to be a difficult gen ed class. Exams felt fair to the content taught and the team exam afterwards was a free 20%. TA's sometimes gave conflicting answers, so ask her directly if you have questions.
Overall, pretty decent professor. Had her for 110 lab and it was not too bad. She really cares about the subject. However, the TA's occasionally gave conflicting answers. The TA's were always right though when we submitted the labs so I would listen to them.
Dr Whitmeyer is a nice person but her class and the structure of the material she taught felt unorganized. Textbook readings are important, don't just rely on the notes you take in class.
She's great for people going into geology. She goes into a lot of detail and is good at explaining concepts. I would not call this class an easy A, you do have to study outside of class, but it's not unreasonable. She's a good teacher and engaging (though some lectures can drag).
Very caring and wants her students to succeed but doesn't always explain concepts well. TAs carry the class 100%. Extremely fast-paced so don't skip because you won't catch up.
She is a nice lady however she does not teach the material enough and then expects students to understand it immediately and complete a graded lab on it. The TA's were super helpful and taught more than she did. For the quizzes and exams, you are allowed a flash card which were helpful.
I had Whitmeyer for the lab, I found the class to be understandable and not super hard. No work outside of the lab and definitely use the TAs to your advantage.
This professor is super helpful and caring. She will work with you until you understand the material. She lets you work with others in the class which is helpful. Her tests are hard and there pretty much is zero opportunity for extra credit. If you like taking notes, 100% take this class
Whitmeyer is a great professor. It is a large lecture class, so there isn't much to do other than listen to her talk. Tests can be difficult so make sure you study, but she also does group tests with the same questions from the individual test, so that's nice. Helpful outside of class if you need her. Weekly quizzes and in-class assignments too.
Very lecture heavy and not a particularly interesting way of teaching for me. Kind of dry but could be worse
Dr. Whitmeyer is really kind and I enjoyed taking her lab class. Missing one class sets you back a lot so I really recommend showing up to every single one. If you pay attention, do your work well, and study pretty hard you should pass with no problems.
The class overall is way more than I was expecting for an Gen Ed. The tests are very detailed and I found that I had to dedicate a lot of time to studying although she did allow for cheat sheets/flashcards for quizzes an tests. I found much of the content to be overwhelming and I needed to ask for help on almost every question. Content = Confusing.
Dr. Whitmeyer is nice and clearly passionate about geology, but the work is way too hard for a 1-credit lab. The exams are nearly impossible, even with notecards allowed. The TAs explain things better than she does, and she doesn't even show up to review sessions – just the TAs. If you're looking for an easy gen ed lab, this isn't it.
