too many homework assignments, easy exams and project. lectures are boring
Nice lady; subject matter overall is more accounting-based and not as quantitative; If you have questions ask her!!
Very nice, very helpful, and everyone likes her..
very fair in grading but it helps if you already know alot of accounting
Her lectures are very very boring and she makes everything more confusing. The homework are super hard and is NOTHING like in the book!
She must have changed since she was teaching before. She is not a good teacher. This class should not be as hard as she is making it. I've only had her 4 wks and wish I could find another teacher for this class.
Not a good prof to take for finance. You will not learn anything from her lectures. Basically, this is a learn on your own class. She is not clear and the homeworks are really time consuming, plus it does not relate to her test problems.
This professor confuses you. She gives out homework and reviews for exam, but it is totally different from what the book states. Take another professor if possible. She also gives out homework worth 20% of your grade. Nearly impossible when she doesn't teach you how to do the problems on there and very time consuming.
She makes the class easy as can be with reviews that basically tell you what the questions are for exams. Along with easy and graded HW's, I would advise all Fnan majors to take her. Plus the material isn't difficult at all.

This teacher does not know how to teach. She'll do a problem in Excel with column formulas and expect you to do in it ur calculator on ur own. Next semester they're adding a lab, so everyone should do better. She's also very unapproachable. If you ask her a question she'll say "check the syllabus" for everything. I was a finance major until her.
she is the coolest teacher in finance.i ll be taking her for finance 302 next semester. very very nice and funny
This professor is very good. She explains the material well, and if you have a question she will answer it.
This class has super hard material, but her teaching is ok. Her study guides are awesome and her power point slides are helpful when studying for the exam. Beware of the homework -- I think they were originally designed to help your grade, but really they will just bring it down. The questions are impossibly time consuming and uber difficult.
Ask any FNAN major, 301 is the hardest Finance class, and it's really no exaggeration. But Canterbury is alright, and her study guides are really similar to the exams. But they are really hard and require a great deal of studying. I'm just glad that she does curve if necessary, up to a class average of a high "C".
Doesnt really explain the material, Homework does not reflect what will be on the test.
She doesn't teach well at all, doesn't explain the info, and the homework is worthless compared to the tests. Finance is the hardest class I have ever taken, and with her it is not going to be easier.
She does a great job of explaining, test are straight from the ppt slides.
She is great, usually pretty funny, and her study guides and in class practice problems are awesome, they help you so much. People who don't like her are the ones who don't go to class and don't study. Don't kid yourself its not an easy course but if you let her... she can teach it
The hardest class in the history of mankind. The fact that she doesn't teach well and doesn't prep you for the tests made me wish I was an art major. Homework is totally useless. Her curves do not help worth jack. Ohyeah and on test days? Please do not look up from your test. If you do be prepared to have 5 proctors gangbang you into anxiety!
Her tests are very hard, part of the reason being is that many of the test questions are completely different than the homework problems and practice problems. I dont like her teaching style at all and I wish her practice exams and homework problems were more representative of the material on the tests.
What a bunch of WHINERS! Finance has the reputation of being the hardest class for a reason -- IT IS THE HARDEST CLASS. However, Canterbury is damn good teacher. Her ppt slides help - ALOT. In addition, she lets you know what is going to be on all the exams. There are no surprises. Bottom Line - Work Hard, and you will do well.
This is a challenging class. It requires A LOT of studying/homework, but it's not hard to get an A. people who whine on here expect an easy A/B, and then complain when they have to do a little bit of work. canterbury is a good, responsive teacher. studying her practice exams is what got me an A in this class.
At Mason the reason finance has been considered the 'hardest class' is because it use to only be taught by Prof. Walpuck. Canterbury is a normal teacher who makes the class just like any other. Very similar to accounting. There is alot of homework. She gives you exam practice problems which mimic the exam, so its easy to study and do well. Take Her
Canterbury is a nice teacher. I got a 50 on the last exam and still got a B. She gives you a chance to earn 20 extra credit points, and homework is weighted the same as an exam. This class is not hard - Mason students are just lazy and metally retarded. Easy class, easy homework, nice teacher, minimal effort required. what else can you ask for?
Easy class, kinda scary once you get started but the professor lets you know exactly what to know for the exam. She curves generously if needed but none of our exams needed it. The project was difficult but she is realistic in her expectations and doesnt grade hard. Always promptly responds to emails and helps whenever she can.
this is definitely the one class that has made me want to quit school.but canterbury does whatever she can to help.be prepared to spend many hours on homework and studying.make sure to do all your hw to get extra points.that will allow for lower exam grades.i got a B but at one point wasnt even sure if i would pass.this class was hell!
One word for her: FABULOUS. She made me fall in love with Finance. Don't know what all the fuss is about. If you have an ounce of intelligence, this class should be a breeze. Of course you have to keep up with the work. You can also earn 20 extra credit points. Which SOM professor gives you that opportunity. This was the easiest "A".
Easy A! She's very personable-a finance teacher with a sense of humor! Makes otherwise dull material (which is heavily concentrated on accounting) interesting. Tests are easy. The group projects can takeup alot of your time outside of class. If youd rather spend a bulk of your time doing group projects instead of studying for tests take this class
I don't understand why so many students dislike this class. The class does require some outside effort, but it is not terribly bad. However, if you are an accounting major this class is a breeze. 20 extra credit points help. Exams are a bit difficult, know the concepts, don't just memorize hw problems and practice exams. Nice person overall.
This class isn't as bad as it's made out to be if you read the book and keep up with the homework. The teacher is nice but ran into problems finding enough time to spend on both lectures and practice problems. It is possible to get an A in this class, I did. Hint: Make Excel spreadsheets for your homework...it makes life so much easier
Next semester should be much better. The lectures themselves were useless and confusing until she began utilizing most of class to go through problems by hand. It made a big difference. Exams are tough but if you study, do homework and practice study exams you will do fine. Even w/ huge class, she tries to make sure everyone understands.
Ok, homework manager.....THE WORST. Tests, not enough time, when you're told you have formulas for the exam, remember that they don't tell you what the functions do. The titles are left out. Finance majors make a lot of money when they graduate, but I'd rather eat poison than do it.......
She is a very helful and nice teacher. Finance class is such that is makes you work for it. She triese her best to help you and is very good on replying via email.
If you get a 100% on Homework Mgr which is very attainable, especially if you know how to network and you turn in your +2 point sheet in the begining of the semester---then all you need is a 63% on each of the four exams; then you can pass the class with a C. Oh yeah, she curves each exam!
Very approachable professor. She lets you know what to expect. Study and you will do well.
She's available for help and the tests are comprehensive. If you do the work, you'll be fine.
STAY AWAY! SHE HAS THE INABILITY TO SMILE...YOU CAN TELL SHE HATES STUDENTS. SHE'S NOT HELPFUL AT ALL! HER CLASS IS DIFFICULT..MATERIALS ARE IRRELEVANT TO WHAT YOU ARE BEING EXAMED ON!
awesome teacher, Simply the best
It was a hard class. Homework manager was time consuming and kinda harder than the exams. I think she really tried to teach the class as well as she possibly could. I do suspect that she doesn't smile because of the students that talk to her about how hard the class is. She teaches a lot so she seems worn down. I was in class every day and I took
SHE IS THE BEST TEACHER EVER, I SIMPLY LOVE HER, VERY HELPFUL VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE.
Awesome teacher, explained all concepts well. go to class and you will easily pass, put out time on homework manager and you will get an A like me! Awesome teacher just give it the time you need to give for a harder upper level class. People complain to much and that find reasons to complain are the people that are never satisfied. Just study.
class requires a decent amount of studying, i didnt really rely on her notes, i read the book. also get 100% on HW manager and do the practice quiz's and exams she hands out and you will do fine.
This class requires work but its attainable. She hands out practice exams and practice them at least 3 times before taking the exam as it helps to finish the exam in the given time. HW is harder but with the discussion board on webct, you get a lot of ideas to solve them. If you did your work, this should be an easy A class.
Great Prof. Study the Study guide. try to get good grade on first exam, get into groups and get 100% on HW. u will be straight.
SHE PICKS FAVORITES LIKE NO OTHER!!! honestly, she will make you feel bad about yourself if your not one of her favorites. First prof I've ever had to pick favorites and be so obvious about it...the class is really hard and completely disorganized but it's supposed to get better next semester...lucky for those of you who haven't taken it yet!
Hardest class but the most fun. N my top 2 fav teachers ever. Not for whiners, no hard work=fail. She def rewards ur hard work extra credit quizzes, full points on hw if u do it. Dnt let others do all the work on the project or u'l die on final. She's accessable, helpful, if u work hard you'l have an unparalleled sense of satisfaction at the end.
I got her for both 301 n 302. 301 was a joke, but 302 is definitely difficult. The 302 text book is used for other schools' MBA program. This semester is the 1st time she used it, so it's unorganized, next semester will be a lot better. She gave out extra credits so you really need to study to earn a good grade. Hard class, great prof.
DO NOT SLACK in this class. MAKE SURE you go to the free tutor sessions! The workload is like two classes. For exams, focus only on practice probs., practice exams, and hw probs. Don't waste time w/ lab probs.--they'll only confuse you. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE. Its not like learning definitions. Must be able to spend extra time studying for this class
One of toughest classes I've taken, but worth it. She's more than fair. Ignore ratings of "she picks favorites" because that person is just whining - life isn't fair, people, but Canterbury is. DO THE HW. Participate in the project, don't freeload. Very tough class but you will learn. Read chapters on reformulation early! Good class, great teacher!
This was the hardest class. Start on the project at the beginning of the semester...you will be glad at the end. She has her favorites...if she liked you in 301 take this class! The project is structured poorly for groups...she said she is changing it a bit for next semester. Just work hard on project and you will do fine on final.
Watch out for this class. It will eat up most of your time during the semester you decide to take it. This is an inherently hard topic to teach for any teacher and the way the class is structured did not help either. You will get out of something from this class only if you actively participate in the project and work very hard.
Teacher does her job, but the exams are too easy in 301, she practically gives you the answers. 302 is somewhat harder, but finance is one of the harder subjects.
To teach reformulations, the professor should give a clearer overview on the topic, rather then correlating EVERTHING to the BOOK. The book is terrible--to say the least. The structure of the class is lacking and so are the student's motivation. She promises next years class will be clearer, structured, and easier. Good luck fellow patriots.
This was one of the most interesting classes that I have taken here at Mason. It was very difficult at times, but you will learn a lot in this class.
Lots of work in this class. Gotta meet your group almost every week for HW assignments and the semester project. The project was long but very interesting. The midterm exam was a joke. She gives concept questions, exam was very similar to those. Final was not bad either.
She has great lectures that keep you awake and interested. Homework is really hard, quizzes aren't too bad, and study for the exams. She always made us laugh during class
This is a time intensive class, however it is worth the effort. Prof Canterbury works extremely hard to make sure that everybody who tries succeeds. The book is very intense but if take the time to comprehend what it is saying it is a great tool. This is not an easy class.
FNAN 301 is definitely hard. I somehow pulled a B in this class. Canterbury also realizes that this class is hard and does a lot to help students along. But face it -- you're only going to pass this class if you do the HW and go to class/recitation. Don't expect a good grade to be handed to you. It's painful, but it's possible to do well.
She's a very nice professor who helps her students understand the class. I'm very happy that I took her. If you are willing to study, take her :)
This course is tough but she makes it interesting and fun. I loved this class and waited for every class. Best teacher in mason, really helpful, and tries to make your life easy.
Great Professor. She's very nice and does everything she can to get you to do good in the class. She provides practice exam questions before each exams and she curves her exams.
Great Teacher! material is not that hard either, its basically simple algebra.
This class is ridiculously hard. When there is a mind numbing fail rate which is over 40% near 50% something is wrong. This professor is the best teacher to take FNAN 301 though. I basically had to learn the material from the TA she makes little sense. Watch out though, I know people who have studied hard and had to repeat this course.
This class is challenging but very rewarding (if you like finance, if you don't you'll think this class sucks). She is a good teacher and she is very helpful. The textbook is hard to read but is helpful as well. Get used to excel before taking this class.
This professor is probably the best. I got an "A" without reading the book, just study the lecture slides really well and do the problems in the end of the book and study the practice exams. The only thing that is messed up in this course is that some versions of the exams are easier then others.
TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE FIRST EXAM! It's the easiest one and easy to get an A on. Never miss lecture because of quizes. Don't read the book, just pay attention to her slides and take notes. Keep up with online homework. The more problems you do, the better you'll do on the exams. I have friends wishing they had done that.
This class was a lot of work. Some of the Homework assignments took hours to do. I recommend you start your h.w assignments early and DEFINITELY DO THE PRACTICE EXAMS. because they do help! Do attend classes for pop concept quizzes. If you study, do h.w, look at the slides, you should be able to do well. Do also read the book.
She is the most helpful and nicest GMU fnan prof. I barely studied at all and got a B. The material is challenging, but she is a pretty easy grader. If you're having trouble with fnan, take Canterbury. She will help you out when you are struggling.
It's not really a hard class. She's extremely helpful. She shows all the answers on the statements when you ask her. Exams are not hard if you pay attention to past exams and what she said during lecture. The problem would be the quizzes. She does not curve in this class, because a lot of students do very well.
OMG!! I loved this teacher! The material is hard, confusing, but she tries extremely hard to make us understand, & if we don't she's is there to help us!! You have to do the projects...very important, and do the homework, and make sure you participate in class...very important! Do take her!
Lectures are totally useless. I had to learn everything on my own. Do the practice test, problem sets, and extra problem sets.
very helpful, encourages to ask questions, go to class and do homework to get good grade in exam, those who failed her class are dumb
Smart caring and interesting. One of the strongest professors at GMU. Not easy, but worth the effort.
she seems cool at first but she really is not flexible.
The course requires extensive studying and class attendance. She is pretty tough, but compared to other professors she may be the best one.
Professor Canterbury goes through the material quickly and expects at least some recall from the prerequisite classes. She reviews subject as necessary and alters her angles of explanation to ensure students grasp the material.
Easy B class if you do all your work, if not you are going to get a terrible grade. To get an A, you have to deserve it, because the quizzes are difficult and they are 20% of your grade. Overall she is a very nice lady, approachable and very knowledgeable. She also remembers her students name, Kudos Professor!!
The first exam messed me up because I had 3 other finals that week and I was working on the project for Finance 302. So therefore, START the project early! It isn't that bad of a project. The material in this class isn't easy, so you do got to study. I recommend studying the slides as well. You do learn ALOT in the class! So be prepared!
I don't know about other prof. but I don't like the way she teaches. her exams are very difficult.i don't understand her 'pop-quiz' deal- we are not in high school. i didn't do well on the pop quizes, since i didn't know which chapter she was going to quiz on!!!she teach one chapter a lecture- not everyone's a FNAN major! the course itself is hard!
She is a very good professor and enjoys teaching finance. Three exams and pop quizzes in lecture. Finance is only hard if you do not dedicate many hours to studying and understanding it.
Very hard class. Exams are made up of only essay questions, and are very difficult. She is a pretty good teacher, but the material is hard and she expects you to have a working knowledge of everything she talks about. Minimal book use in class, but if you do not read...well, good luck. This class will take up most of your study time.
HATED HER CLASS! IT SEEMS LIKE NO MATTER HOW MUCH I TIRED, I DIDN'T DO WELL ON HER EXAMS! I STUDIED MY BUTT OFF & EVEN GOT EXTRA HELP-I HAVE TO REPEAT THE CLASS! EXAM CURVES ARE ONLY GIVEN IF THE AVERAGE IS BELOW A C (so if u have smart ppl in ur class, u prob. wont ever get a curve!)
She is one of the best professors I've had at Mason. I got a B- in this class but an A in her FNAN 301 class. Make sure you study for all exams and don't push off the project! I did that and that didn't give me time to study at ALL for the first exam else I would of had gotten a B or B+ in the class. Also study slides! Go to Office Hrs if needed!
Prof is great. Always helpful to those putting in effort. Overall 302 is a hard class w/ lots of excel forecasting HW. Do the project & don't get behind on spreadsheets. Refresh your acct knowledge before class. Exams are mostly essay. Need to read book & annual report in order to defend answers on test. I am "A" student but happy w/ my "B" here.
People that complain about this class are idiots. It is not supposed to be an easy class, like marketing or management. accounting/finance and MIS are the only true classes that test if your smart or not. The rest of the pre-business classes are a joke.
She is a nice person!Quizzes were hard dt know from where she gets the questions. Slides didn't really help.Read the book, answer concept questions and solve some problems at the end of each chap. Some questions on the exams came directly from there.Exams were hard, she changed the format last semester.Exams consisted of essay questions, mc,&problems
she is one of THE hardest teacher I ever had. You are resonsible for every damn thing on the book. Other prof. usually give you hints as what to study and when are the quizes. Forget about that with her. No No No. She is loco for real. I know she is a nice person but that doesnt do me any good as a student. she is the hilter of FNAN.
Please, anyone taking FNAN 301 get it through your head that studying and doing practice questions is paramount. I got an A+ in this class with some good effort. Stop slacking and do some math homework. BTW take Prof Canterbury!
Prof. Canterbury is a nice professor, but it doesn't mean that she is an easy grader. From this class, you will learn whole lots of finance stuff, and it will be really helpful, if FNAN is your major. But you have lots of things to do during the semester.
Finc 302 is the most difficult class in the Finc program. A lot of people afraid of this class. Prof. is nice and she is very good at teaching the hard concepts. You must earn your grade. Good luck.
She is a very good professor. I was pleased by her instructing and I feel as though I have learned a great amount of information. This class felt like mix of accounting and finance along with applied spreadsheet analysis. If you did well in your calculus courses and enjoyed it, finance is probably the major for you.
This class is easy guys. Come on, its the basics of finance. Basic formulas, simple calculations, even gives multiple choice questions so you can find the answers and check to see if they are correct. upper level FNAN class are much harder than this. Study more!
Numbering of this class is misleading. 302 is much harder than the 400 level courses I have taken. To be well prepared take ACCT 301 and FNAN 401 before this class. That said, Professor Canterbury is a great teacher and human being.
She is lame. In order to be successful in this class, read the book and work with classmates because she teaches you nothing. she goes way too fast her only saving grace is giving us an easy pasewark booklet to complete and spreadsheet points.
FNAN 302 is an excellent course, but some of the exam questions can be challenging. To do well, it's important to attend every single class and also keep up with the semester-long spreadsheet project.
Took this class with Piloff the first time. Didn't pass. Took it with Canterberry my 2nd time, and passed with a B. She's a good teacher, but the class is hard. DO ALL THE TEST BANK PROBLEMS to PASS THIS CLASS, it is the ONLY way! Good luck
A lot more helpful than Piloff or Hogan. She offered extra examples during lecture and emphasized tricky questions well enough that students were able to grasp the logic and apply concepts to everyday life. I find her straigtforward and to to-the-point. May keep you for the entire time but makes it worthwhile.
She was OK. I didn't like her teaching much. She's super anal about people leaving during or at the end of class, like it's totally unexpected.. Piloff and Canterbury issue the same (Piloff's) exams, and if I remember correctly, they use the same slides. DO THE TEST BANK PROBLEMS!! Most important part of the class. Show up for iClickers/attendance.
First 2 times, I took this class with Hogan and failed. Took it with Canterbury, passed with a solid B and understood the material. She's very straight forward and will keep it as simple as possible. DO ALL TEST BANK PROBLEMS & ATTEND ALL CLASSES to receive pts for iclicker problems
She is a great teacher. Pilloff just has no heart, He only dose things when it benefits him. He only curves if it helps more student pass and makes him look good.. But it?s all about get money for the SOM... And it sucks,, but one day he will have to understand that not everyone is like him and spent their whole college career in the books.
This is probably the best professor you will have at George Mason Finance. She is tough on students because she expects a lot. She also teaches you real world skills and gives you a perspective. Make sure you participate a lot. She rewards high achievement. I got the highest grade in my section so she sent me a barnes & noble gift card :)
The professor has no say as to what will appear on quizzes or the final. As such, she neither makes the class easier or hard. To prepare yourself for quizzes, make sure you do the test bank problems. The difficulty in this class stems from Pillof's ridiculous way of wording the questions on the quizzes.
I know a lot of people are scared of this class But honestly, I loved this class with Prof. Canterbury. This is a more hands on class and you can take a lot from this class and apply them in the future. Not hard if you go to class, pay attention, and do all the homework she asks you to do.
Canterbury is awesome, but her subject is hard. It's easier with a textbook but she doesn't use one. She expects you to remember materials from FNAN301 so be prepared to google alot, if you took it a while back. She is nice and helpful though. Go to every class, you can only miss two and it's not wise to even miss one.
Awesome teacher but it's a hard subject. Don't miss class or come late, you'll miss iClicker questions. Very willing to help and re-explain material. Wants everyone to succeed. 4 tests and a final. Final is worth almost 30% of your grade so STUDYING and REPETITION are crucial. Do ALL the test bank questions for each test, TWICE if you can.
Best prof at Mason, loved her! She made a 3hr class fun. She wants you to succeed and is willing to help. No book but she puts up a lot of info on bb to help. Must go to class and follow long with project-don't get behind. Full credit for hw as long as you do it, same with pasewark. Must study hard to do well. Wish I could take her every class!
Don't believe the horror stories, this class is very manageable. There is a heavy workload up until the first exam, but it calms down afterward. Non-test related stuff are meant to boost your grade and the test themselves are concepts covered in class, no surprises. Also VERY useful for any finance related job you pursue, especially for excel stuff
She is a great professor, really knew how to teach well. But the class is pretty difficult, and she doesn'tmake the exams. But I still think she is alot more helpful then than the other professor
302 is a tough class, but Prof. Canterbury really wants all of her students to succeed. She's great!
Words of advice: don't take this class until you graduate! ACCT 301 is a must-take be4 u attempt to take this class because so much advanced knowledge required. When you study for test 2 keep practicing the Forecasting Question! This class was the most annoying because of being stuck with the same Excel spreadsheet since the beginning of the term:(
A lot of hands on experience using bloomberg terminal and excel. She has good material and she is helpful with learning it. She is always available for questions. Tests are difficult. She does a good job of keeping class interesting and does well engaging with students.
Class is very difficult, but all the material is online. If you go through the powerpoints thoroughly and do all of the practice problems, going to class isn't really necessary. No textbook in the class, which is a plus. The professor is helpful and useful, but not likely any more effective than the others who teach this class.
Best professor at Mason hands down - you cannot really call yourself a finance major without taking her class. Tons of work, hard tests, but it's all worth it because you will learn so much.
shes a really nice lady, she really wants everyone to do great. homework sets you up for the exams which are pretty tough but definitely doable
Everyone who is in the school of business has to take this class. All the material from all the professors are the same. Just do all of the test banks and old quizzes and you'll pass the class. Canterbury gives great helpful problems before each class.
Canterbury is one of the best professors I've had at Mason. Don't bother with the textbook, you'll never use it. Study what she posts online for the exams and you'll do great. Bloomberg projects are easy. Don't skip! We do so much work in class that you can fall behind quick. If you do miss something she'll post the values online but no formulas.
Canterbury is an amazing teacher and this class was beyond fun. If you want to learn things that will help set you up for your future in finance this class is a must. The case studies are hard and long but it is worth the effort. If you show up, read the cases and participate theres no way you can fail.
Was terrified of this class at first but I took everyones advice on here and ended up with an A! My advice, do ALL the test banks, they arent that hard, may be long but worth it because it makes the tests that much easier. Shes a nice teacher, but this course requires you to put in the effort (test banks, reading pwpts) and you will pass!
She is nice and wants her students to do well. With that said, not an easy class. You must stay on track with her as falling behind is not an option since this class is a lot of tedious work. Fnan majors should take this class as it gives real world fnan exposure and is the only practically applicable fnan class I have taken. She is very helpful.
Coming from an honors student- worst finance class EVER. There is no real structure or lectures. She expects you to understand excel and assigns annoying assignments. Exams are set up weirdly-you can lose points very easily, and the class is not pass friendly. DONT take it. Especially if you are a senior. Completely stressful and not worth it.
I absolutely loved FNAN 431. This was truly an amazing class. If you plan on going into Venture Capital or Private Equity field after college then this class is a must. It is a tough class. We had multiple cases every week and unlike other FNAN classes you actually have to do the stuff. So if you want an easy A don't take it.
95% of class time is spent following her step-by-step direction in excel. This class does nothing in terms of teaching real financial and economic concepts, which I believe is most important. However, her assignments do provide useful experience in excel and the Bloomberg Terminals. This class is solely a resume builder, not a knowledge builder.
I really don't understand any of the poor reviews. This professor sincerely cares about her students and truly wants to help them be successful. This was one of the few courses I've take where actual concepts were applied rather than just talked about. Pass-friendly class, not an easy A though. If you're a college student, shouldn't have a problem.
This was the first semester this course was taught, so the structure is bound to change slightly in the coming semesters. With that said, I really enjoyed this class. No exams, all case-based (participation/weekly cases 40%; 2 big cases 30% each). Actually apply finance concepts with weekly cases. Wish spent more time on term sheets, however.
302 is a financial modeling class. Coursework is mostly based off excel so make sure you are familiar with basic excel functions. Considering you only learn how to model DCF throughout the entire semester, it is not too much to learn but there are complementary accounting materials she expects you to learn along with it. not that hard to get an A
Good class. Lots of cases and reading. No quizzes and tests. Only cases are graded. Long classes. But good material. Most tricky part is term sheets at the end of the semester. But read the cases and book she assigns and you will be fine.
It was a tough class. Spent most of our class time on excel modeling, did not learn a lot in terms of actual finance. Study for exams two weeks before hand. She makes the tests really tricky. Not an easy A. So get ready to work.
Canterbury is an amazing teacher and this class was fun. This class is a must, If you want to learn things that will help set you up for your future in finance.
This class was by far the best Finance class I have taken at Mason and I don't think there is a better teacher that could teach it. There are real world applications that you can take with you when you leave. It's not easy, but if you try and do the work you will be fine. Also, she teaches 441 that goes off this class, also recommended.
If you want to learn a lot about finance and accounting, become expert in excel you have to take Prof Shelly L. Canterbury. Class is not easy if you want to just come to class and get C. Come to every class- if you missed ones you may fall behind very quickly. I had to retake this class because I left everything to the last minute.
The hardest working professor in the GMU Finance department by far. This class is a lot of work, but you leave with extremely valuable knowledge. The curriculum requires you to be analytical and detail oriented, a lazy student will not be successful. I highly recommend if you are pursuing a career in Private Equity.
Amazing professor, really knows how to explain the concepts well and is hilarious to top it off. If your a finance major, take the class. You will have to work for it but the skills you learn from this class are skills you can take into the real world. Go to class, pay attention, do everything she says and you'll be fine
Professor Canterbury is one of the best professors in the School of Business. While I received a mediocre score, it is of my own doing. She genuinely cares for her students and is one of the most clear courses I have taken at Mason. Her exams are not tough if you prepare by studying and repeating past papers which she does provide.
Professor Canterbury really knows her stuff and knows what she's teaching. super nice and helpful. I don't see a reason why someone would fail this class, her grading scale is really good and there are a lot of assignments, excel, extra credit you can do. if you just go to class and listen to what she says you should get at least a C.
Maybe she's good at teaching other subjects like 341 for instance, but she is an absolute mess for FNAN 401. Doesn't really know how to explain concepts behind different problems, doesn't want to use formulas for reference, and copies answers from the answer key in the textbook without properly explaining how to actually do it. HW is difficult
A teacher who truly cares about you. This class is very straight forward; everything you need to succeed is given, "I'd rather give you more than you need than not enough." She breaks the course down into very manageable and easily-understood tests. I once showed up late to her office hours and she stayed for 30 minutes just to help me. Amazing.
Awesome course that is super relevant for any finance major! Would absolutely recommend both the professor and the course.
Professor Canterbury is an asset to the school of business. The most amazing instructor that i came across in college, you have to get ready to put some work in this class in order to earn your grade which is fair. She gives you a lot of information in order for you to do well. Start working at the beginning of the semester and it will pay off.
No lectures, all she does is go over long problems with the class (one problem each class). The class is more about examinations and quizzes (essay based almost every week) than teaching! Her BB page is a big mess - you will get puzzled! Teaching is a skill that not every teacher or professor has, and this professor doesnt have this skill!!!
The Professor hasnt a clear rule. She change rule without notice. Dont choose her class again
She literally gives you ever single possible aid to help you pass. Just put as much effort as she does and you will do well. Loads of sample exam practice and extra credit opportunities, i don't see how anyone can fail her classes when she helps so much. You wont learn much finance but you will learn excel and bloomberg which is more important tbh.
She is fast talker, you have to really keep up because she will leave you behind. The good thing is that she videotapes what she does on Excel and Crystal Ball. But these videos are mainly unedited so best come to class since she likes pop-quizzes.
One of the few useful classes I have taken at Mason. It was fun and interesting. Make sure you know excel and get ready to pay attention in class. If you do fall behind she has the videos posted on Blackboard. Plenty of grads and extra credit. The class is passable, but you have work hard for an A. Book is helpful for exam, but not necessary.
Nice teacher. Just show up, participate and you will do fine. She gives you everything you need to pass and lots of opportunities for fluff points. Make sure you are good with Excel, although she doesn't do anything too complicated. One of the better finance teachers at GMU.
She is a wonderful professor. Here's a tip. To ace the exams, do all the practice exams and re-do the homework over and over again. Follow her study guide but do review the practice eam (can't emphasize enough). Her study guide looks harder than the actual exam for some reason. Be careful with hw and make sure you show up for her "easy" pop quizzes
