Very nice, helps as much as possible, very fair on gradding. not always the most fun but you will learn alot!
There is no way in the world that anyone can be more excited about math than Shelly. Result: Math majors love her, everyone else can't stand her. Her excitement will be okay at first, but by the end of the semester you'll just want her to be quiet.
She is excited about the subject, but I guess you have to be if you're going to teach it. Every once and a while the "I'm so excited about math" attitude can be condesending if you don't understand an "easy" topic. But she was cool enough to bake us a bunt cake to demonstrate the volume of a torus. :)
she's really good. there's a LOT of writing to her homework but it's worth it. she makes maple easy and she's really understanding. she's always there to help. she goes over things til you get them and uses lots of real life examples. there's a lot of in-class work days too that help.
I would definatly take this teacher again for 210. She is very clear on what she wants and is always willing to help you. Her tests were very easy and so was her exam. If you have to take 210 I would defiantly take her :)
Helpful, friendly, and enthusiastic. Good professor that is up to the standards of a great Math Department!
Make sure to do the HW early and go in and ask for help. She will walk you through the problems and show you how to get through them. Good prof.
Great teacher. explains everything very well and is willing to help outside of class
She made this class very interesting and I learned a lot from it. Buy the study guide it will help you with your homework!
She is a very good professor. She is the most clear professor on campus. She expects you to work outside of class, but who doesn't. She is very approachable, I talk to her regularly about math and other things. It is obvious she loves teaching and really wants her students to learn. If you like math you will like Shelly.
Very enthusiastic and helpful. She really cares that her students understand the material. Homework is kind of a pain because you have to explain everything to her, but it's good because it makes sure you understand the material. The exams are not tricky and you get plenty of time. She's a great prof to take for calc!
Shelly Smith is my favorite professor ever to live. I would recommend her to anyone and everyone. She presents material in a fun and interesting way, and genuinely cares about the subject and her students. I will take her for every class that I possibly can.
The best math professor at GV and definitely the best math professor I've ever had. I was so scared to take calc 2 but she made it so clear and manageable. I wouldn't have done nearly as well if I had a different prof. TAKE HER AT ALL COSTS!
You WILL learn from her! Best math teacher at Grand Valley. If you can get her, do so. You won't be disappointed.
Best teacher I've had at GV. If you are not good at math, you will be at the end of her class. Very organized and well prepared for every class. If you have a question she will help you understand it. TAKE HER!
By far the best math teacher at Grand Valley. I learned a lot, but it wasn't too difficult because she is an amazing teacher. Uses models and aids for teaching which help too.
Without a doubt, Shelly is the best math professor I've ever had throughout high school and college. She always explains the material clearly with exercises that make sure you learn enough to do well on the tests.
She is an excellent professor. Teaches the subject extremely well and thoroughly. If you have to take this course, or any math course for that matter, she is the right way to go!
Shelly is an AMAZING professor. i did not have a good math 201 experience with a different prof but shelly completely changed my opinion on Calculus. Its a tough class but take her and you will enjoy it!
Professor Smith was miles better than my Calc I professor. She always came to class prepared with examples and a plan for the day. Calculus II is not easy, but she made it seem easy. She is extremely helpful. Engineering majors...TAKE HER!
I thought she was extremely clear. With Linear Algebra, she had pleanty of examples, and used classtime so that the 1 1/2 hour class went by quickly. I've signed up for her again for MTH 210.
Absolutely the best math prof I've ever had. She explains the material really well, and truly cares about her students. Take her!
She is an amazing calculus teacher and a very nice person! She explains things very clearly and will do more examples if people don't understand. The exams are fair and if you study you can easily get an A in the class.
Loved this class. I liked math going in, but came out loving it even more. She explains the subject really well, and teaches in a way that is easy to understand. I would definitely recommend taking her.
Very good professor. Teaches the subject very clearly. Doesn't overload you with homework. Exams are straightforward and very fair. Would recommend anyone to take her class.
Professor Smith does a great job! She teaches the subject very enthusiastically and makes it easy for students who put in the effort to succeed. Homework load is appropriate and exams are very fair. I've had several great math professors over the years, but Professor Smith ranks among the very best.
Communication and ability to help you understand topics are phenomenal. Tests are reasonable, and homework is scheduled in a fashion that will keep you consistent and familiar with material. Must attend class to do well. (CALC II) She's awesome in my opinion.
Shelly is an outstanding professor! One of the best I have had at Grand Valley! She uses many techniques to help students learn the content and is super clear on her expectations. If you are taking MTH 210 I highly recommend Shelly! You will not be disappointed!
Professor Smith is the best math prof I have had at GVSU. Calculus I was a tough subject for me and then I had to take Calculus II. Prof. Smith really helped me and improved my grade from calc I.
Smith is an excellent lecturer, everything is very clear and concise. She can make you care about the material. But from the time you learn something to the test there isn't enough required review. Because the tests are HARD! The girl next to me was a 4.0 student and did very well, but about halfway through the last test before final she was crying
Prof Smith is great! Really makes the content easy to learn and is a very generous grader. You still have to study but if you have problems she's really nice about helping you. Does assign homework problems from the book for credit though, so you need it (but I found a pdf online).
She is very clear at explaining and prints out the activities which are mostly found on her test, study those sheets it is a relatively easy class.
Half of class is section notes, half is a worksheet that she walks around and helps with. Good communicator, knowledgeable and funny--can laugh at herself. Learned a lot of material in a little time. Okay use of technology. Assignments are reasonable and tests are fair. Would take her again.
Great professor for what seemed like a somewhat difficult class. Presented material in a way made it easy to take notes on and study for later. Make sure to actually study for exams and you should be fine. Homework and classwork were very beneficial to understanding the material so make sure you pay attention
Best math professor I've taken yet! She's super nice and will help you whenever you need it. You take a quiz every week but they aren't that hard. Study for the quizzes and exams and you'll be fine! She is really great!
Easy grader, material is easy to learn from her
Best professor I have had at GVSU yet. GET HER!!!
Professor Smith is such a kind person. This class is challenging, but she is always willing to help and answer any questions you have. She explains things very clearly and is super organized. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND taking this professor if you can!!! Do it!!
Professor Smith is by far the best math professor I have ever had. She teaches the material in an effective and interactive way. But, you must do the pre class work in order to understand the lecture material and keep up with the class.
Great professor. Every expectation was very clear, and the math department gives you many great resources to succeed. However, my Calc 1 professor was very difficult, and I found Smith's class to be fairly easy; i'm not sure how well this class sets up students for later math, as tests/quizzes examined straightforward understanding of material.
Best math professor I have ever had. Easy to learn and great at answering questions
She assigns videos of other profs instead lecturing & expects you to just know the material. We had to make videos "teaching" content we barely learned. If the video isn't perfect, you get a ZERO! It's 10% of your grade! Hours of ungraded "practice" homework & group work that we never had time to finish. You have to present your work to the class.
Shelly is da bomb. Most helpful and kind professor ever. Doesn't assign unnecessary and excessive homework. Just enough to make sure you get the concepts, a good grade cushion too.
I've always had a love with math, and of course the higher you go the harder it is. I have never had a teacher explain a concept in such a quick and understanding way like Prof. Smith does! Calc 2 TAKE HER!!!
Pro. Smith is seriously the Lebron James of the math department at GVSU. Not only are her lectures very clear and concise. She is also an absolute ray of sun shine. Seriously I've rarely met a professor who just loves helping people and loves doing her job. Finally her class is not too hard but not easy, do your best and you'll be fine.
Professor Smith is the best professor I have had for a math class. She makes the class easy to understand. She gives you worksheets to work on in class with your group you sit with. Otherwise, she doesn't give much for homework. She is so caring, and one of the best professors. TAKE HER!
She made calc2 seem like elementary math! She makes her expectations of you very clear, out of class homework is not too excessive, and she provides everything you need to be successful. Quizzes and exams every Monday of the semester but are very straight forward and rarely answer questions we haven't done the same example for in class. TAKE HER!!!
Simply put, Smith is a very talented professor, and one of GV's best. She does quite well at explaining complex concepts in a down-to-earth, easy-to-understand manner. She provides you with everything you need to be successful, assigns a reasonable amount of homework, and is very accessible for help both inside and outside class.
I loved Smith! I'm realizing how good she really was now that I don't have her. She did a fantastic job teaching the material during class time, which made it so you didn't ha e to study for hours o end outside of class. I had her for linear algebra, and would definitely recommend getting in her class.
Professor Smith is very caring and gives great lectures. She lays out the notes for her class in a way that is easy to understand the material and makes studying easier and quick. She is helpful if you have questions, tests are not very hard, and there is not much homework.
I took Prof Smith for Discrete Math. The material was fairly challenging but she did a goo job explaining the material. It wasn't very much homework and her tests were fair and were not bad at all. I would recommend her for this class.
Great prof, she does a really good job of explaining things especially if asked to explain something more. Homework for this class was reasonable but she does incorporate vocab and definitions which is tough for a math class. Overall would recommend her though.
I took Calc 2 with Professor Smith. She was very nice and caring, and explained the material very well. However, even though I received a high A in her class, I feel like I didn't learn much. I later began tutoring, and realized that other calc 2 professors cover much more material than she does. I wish I had taken it with a tougher prof.
Professor Smith is BY FAR the best choice in professors you can ever take. She really knows her material and has a rather awesome talent in being able to tailor her teaching to her students and teaching it very effectively. She is now my second top-tier math professor I have taken at GVSU. Take her I promise you won't regret it!
Professor Smith is a wonderful person, she is funny and easygoing. She explains things clearly and in multiple different ways. If you're taking Calc 2 100% take her class. She gives a lot of partial credit on tests and quizzes.
She is an amazing professor and I highly recommend her. She explains concepts clearly and makes the most out of your time. I love the way she structures the class. She makes sure everyone understand the material. She cares about the students and is actually pretty funny. Great student participation. She is always prepared for class.
I loved her! I had a really bad calc 1 professor and Smith helped with examples or going over things in calc 1. Do the additional problems she gives you and you'll be fine! No book. She gives you worksheets, a few webwork, and a few projects! This class is really manageable. Do as much worksheets in your group as you can and SIT WITH GOOD PEOPLE.
Prof Smith is a sweetheart and is very helpful in and outside of class. I got her discrete math, which is one of the harder math classes I've taken, and she's made it easier. Math isn't my strongest subject, but she's helped tremendously through the struggle.
She is very nice but as soon as one thing goes wrong she can not fix it. She gave a test with an impossible proof, so she let us redo that problem but we do not get our grade back that test before the final. She also does not specify certain things so if you dont go to class and then take her test she will give you 0s if you dont do it her way
She was a very caring professor at first, until you didn't get a lesson or you got to the homework and you were lost. She give no practice and grades so harshly on a HOMEWORK. I would say read the book is the only way you can catch up and that's hard taking CIS 163. Her third test was full of questions we never learned and we never got that HW back
Very nice woman and very knowledgeable with discrete mathematics. However, I was not a fan of how the class was structured and how there were very few assignments and exams. If you miss or do poorly on one assignment, your grade is screwed. The transition to proofs was awful. We spent a lot of time preparing, but not a lot of time doing them.
Prof Smith is such a genuine and sweet person. You can't help but enjoy math in her class. She's so enthusiastic and engaging, even in an early morning class. I hope I have her in future classes. She is an amazing Prof.
I love Shelly! She has been one of my favorite profs at GV. She explains the concepts very clearly, and if you don't understand she walks you through it really well. She is always able to understand the "why's" of math and her excitement for math is contagious.
Fantastic Prof! One of my favorites
Worst math professor ever! As a math major would not recommend this professor. The class is a total mess! There are no lectures at all, she simply teaches for 5 minutes and then leaves you to figure out everything by yourself. Then the last 10 minutes of class she lets other students review the answer. Worst experience ever
She is a nice person, but the structure of the online class was terrible. I went to class for half of the semester and stopped going because it was a waste, so I taught myself the material. She "lectured" for 5 minutes then set us out in groups to throw ourselves at the problems. She also grades harsh, especially if you do not use her way.
DO NOT TAKE HER ONLINE, pretty bad, grades are 75% quizzes and 15% pre-class questions. 80% of the class time are just us doing works in groups, you are expected to watch the videos before the class, Professor Smith is a decent person, but sometimes she gets a little frustrated if you are stuck. Overall I don't recommend taking her online at all.
I LOVE her grading style. She really looks at the big picture and only takes off half points often. She is very easy to talk to and goes through more examples than the math profs I've had before. Attending class has been necessary to me but is very helpful.
Shelly Smith is really nice, but I did not enjoy her teaching style. She hovered over me while I was working in class. There were quizzes every week, but they seemed more difficult than the classwork. She has a very strict style. I know people that really like her, but her style was not for me.
She is super helpful and responds to emails relatively fast. I didn't need to go to office hours that often, however, when I did go she was very helpful and she is very patient. She gives as much credit as she can on quizzes and assignments and doesn't assign that much hw.
Extremely generous grader. She balances this by having a rather strict style-not the most accommodating or flexible. Class? introduce a topic for 3 minutes then quickly work in groups. The textbook was useless-never explained anything or gave you answers to exercises/had a unique style where the types of questions cannot be found anywhere else
Has a very understandable way of teaching. You watch short videos before class so you can go right into examples and questions when class begins. This was my second time taking calc 2 (after failing the first) and this professor was so much easier to learn from.
I had professor Smith for both Calc 2 and Linear Algebra 1 and when I say she is one of the best math professors I have ever had I am not lying. Her lectures are very clear and easy to understand. She makes tougher subjects were easier to comprehend. She seems to want to care and learn about her student!. 11/10 would recommend!
Smith was my favorite prof of GVSU so far. She is fantatsic at teaching and I walked out of every class knowing something new. She grade very generously and is extremely fair. Very little work needed to be done out of class. If you show up to every class you will do great. The one thing that hurt my grade a bit was the quizzes. Overall 10/10 prof.
She gave a little quiz every week, this was a big chunk of your grade. At the end of the semester, she dropped your two lowest quizzes. She gave very little homework and her class was overall pretty easy. Her class was more of a figure-it-out-yourself type of class. She was a very fun teacher and overall a very nice lady.
Great professor. Put some effort in. She makes everything clear.
Grade is entirely quizzes, but she grades nice. Excellent job explaining and rewording until you understand. Lots of overlap between topics making quizzes a bit harder, but not bad. Truly cares about trying to have students succeed. Lots of work time in class and goes over examples in depth. No homework, just optional work to help you study.
Professor Smith gives mostly quizzes throughout the semester with generally easy exams pulled from the quizzes. Her lectures are mostly worksheets and in-class "group work" but it is all generally helpful and par for the course. She is incredibly caring and kind, always makes sure that you understand the topic before continuing.
I was impressed by the thoughtfulness she puts into helping students succeed. Attendance wasn't mandatory but she makes class time super useful. Lecture was helpful and I felt well prepared for quizzes and assignments. Her extra practice was clutch when I needed it, grading was fair, and she never turned me down to go over my work together.
I enrolled due to her positive reviews, but boy the reviews are misleading. Her class is 1 hour so she teaches incredibly quickly, grades exclusively quizzes and somehow you have to memorize these obscure formulas on quizzes. This was an insanely difficult class from the way she vaguely explains, I learned more being explained by ChatGPT than her..
Discrete structures class for CS but my advisor wrongly placed me here when I'm an IS major, supposed to take Survey of Calculus but he said this class will still count.... Grades exclusively tests. Toughest class ever, nothing was making sense even when I went to office hours. 1 hour class. Tests are nothing like what we learned in class
I had her for MTH-225, and I loved her. She is a great professor, she loves teaching this stuff, no matter how confusing it can be. The one thing I didn't like is that the only grades in the gradebook you will have are quizzes. There is no homework, you only do in-class handouts and then get quizzed. Also the final is cumulative.
The course was tough at first, but it became really easy once it clicked. All of our learning came from the lectures. The professor is really energetic and passionate which made me excited to learn. There was no homework or tests, only weekly quizzes and a cumulative final. Some topics can be tough but the professor is always willing to help.
I really liked professor smith I was originally worried about calc 2 but she made it so easy and always explained the material super well. The quizzes were pretty easy as well as the final
Prof. Shelly Smith cares about her students and has a passion for mathematics. Her quizzes were not hard at all, and she always is open to questions during class. There is little to no homework for this class, and she was a lenient grader who gave partial credit. If you ever have Prof. Smith as an option...take her!
Attendance isn't mandatory, but I forsure wouldn't have done well if I had skipped. The content was not easy for me but she goes above and beyond making the entire process understandable. If you get notes in class it's easy enough to find your way while practicing later. Light homework, frequent quizzes. One of the kindest professors here!!
I loved Prof. Shelly, I was very nervous for this class as math is not my strong suit, but the way she explained everything just made sense. She was super nice and had a sense of humor! The class had 1 quiz each week and the only test was the final at the end; there were also a few pre-class assignments. Highly recommend if you nervous for calc 2!
Sadly we are not allowed to claim that a professor shows bias against students. I have personal health issues, so I sometimes had to leave in the middle of class. Because of this, she provided clear answers to other students but not to me. When I asked the professor questions, she would shrug or give condescending responses, even in office hours.
Smith was great. Loved having her and would absolutely take a class with her again. Everyone always told me Calc 2 would be the hardest class I'd have to take and b/c of Smith, it was my highest grade of that semester. Great prof as long as you go to class and pay attention. Relatively lenient grader as well.
