Mrs Stine is an easy teacher she gives 3 exams multiple choice and you have to make sure you study from the book to pass the exams. The speeches are easy even though she grades tough on them. I would recommend her to anyone.
I dont know...i mean shes cool...easy A just show up and do your speech and you should be straight...All i didnt like is when she kept us in class and she had nothing much to talk about...like repeated herself often found myself woundering off. Other than that, easy A
If you go to class, and keep up with the assignments, you will be fine
She must not have liked me because I didn't get an 'easy A', I got a C because of her very strict grading methods. I do just fine when I have to give a speech, but I froze up in this class because she grades as if she was in the military. Very nice though, funny, great sense of humor. Also, u dont go to class, you lose points.
This class was hella difficult. This sucks. Grr! She's too tough! You MUST attend class or you'll lose points. And be prepared to never attain an "A" on your speech; she's a very tough grader. She thinks "C" is average...what the heck? Nice eyes though.... AND READ THE BOOK!
She makes it nearly impossible to earn an A in but it can be done. She makes the class very interesting. Just be aware that if you expect the class to be a cakewalk, if english is not your first language, or if you hate group work, this professor may not be your first choice. But if you like setting the bar for the class, you will enjoy her class.
MS. STEIN IS VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE AND IS ALWAYS WILLING TO LISTEN; HOWEVER, SHE IS VERY TOUGH WITH HER GRADING. THE ONLY BENEFIT IN THIS CLASS IS THAT SHE WILL LET YOU PASS ON THE FINAL IF YOU ATTEND EVERY CLASS. I GOT A (B) IN HER CLASS BUT IT WASN'T EASY. I BARELY RECOMMEND.
she may be alright in a class room setting, but she takes weeks to respond to emails...which left several people in my class with late deductions for homework, when her directions were not clear enough. also i received a's on the first two speeches and less than 50% on the final...and ms stein never emailed my review form to explain the F. RUDE!
ms stein lacks the commitment to education and her students. she refuses to fully explain things and often takes several days to respond to emails...also she does not explain her grading...so hopefully you just always feel you are being graded fairly...becuase you will never know...and even if you ask you will be ignored. horrible teacher!!!
Please answer your emails! You'd think since this is an online course that email communication would be a priority. Not for Ms. Stein, you'll be lucky if you get 1 response per every 5 emails you send. And don't expect her to grade your assignments within a month's time frame. As far as the course goes, not too bad altho I wish I took it in person
Great Professor! She takes a bit too long grading assignments, however she's quite fair in the grading procedure. As long as you submit your work on-time you'll have no problems. I have never waitied longer than one day for an email response. class comprised of 3 speeches which r submitted through youtube and extremely easy quizes due every week.
She is an OK teacher. Online quizzes were easy. Speeches fairly easy. She accidentally confused the online class with her face to face class. I recommend taking her online only if you do not want to take an exam. I recommend her slightly.
Very easy class. She goes over exactly what she expects in your speeches and how to do it. She made class interesting. I absolutely hate giving speeches but this was my favorite class for the semester!
MS. Stein was great. I took her in the spring and got a B. You have to go to class or your grade will reflect it. Just pay attention on all the speeches, do all extra credit, and you will do fine. The final exam is very easy, its mainly generated from all the quizzes you do in class.
not a good communicator, the assignments were vague and to much unnessacery use of the internet and blogs and wiki's, this was not an online class.
Communications is not her forte'. When she is giving a lecture, she will off on a tangent about her "stay in Africa and how their way of communicating are different" By the time her story is over, class is over and you only learned about Africa. The class itself would have been quite pleasant if she kept some type of schedule or even organization!
Make sure to stay on her good side. She blantantly plays favorites and if she doesn't like you, your grade just might reflect it. For a speech teacher, she doesn't communicate very well and her comments can and will come off as harsh. Like razor down your arm harsh. That's just her sense of humor. Either don't worry or stop caring.
I don't understand all of these bad reviews on her. She's a perfectly good speech teacher. She reminds us when assignments are coming up, never goes off on tangents, and I like all of the online work. She makes very good use of our class time. Then again, I only have her 1 day a week. But really, I think she is very nice.
WOW--glad I followed my instinct--I'm currently in her class-Prof. Stein is an AWESOME instructor--I found her to be very clear when explaining an assignment, always remind you whe an asignment is due--always available to help--all you hav to do is show up and pay attention to what she says. I was told not to take her class--but I'm so glad I did!
I would not take this horrible woman's class. She is in every sense of the word a "stickler." She is a very unfair grader and expects you to be a pro public speaker. If your speech isn't perfect, she won't give you credit for trying. Just do yourself a favor and get out of her class. She is AWFUL. Go with someone who'll give you an A for effort.
I would recommend Dr. Stein to anybody! She was very helpful with my nerves and she made it easy to maje a speech. Do the work and do the speeches and you will get a giod grade.
She was the most helpful instructor I've ever had. All of the assignments were CRYSTAL CLEAR. As long as you are on time and get assignments done, you'll do more than fine. She's friendly and definetly helps you deliver great speeches
This class was my worst enemy, at the beginning. Public speaking can be nerve wrecking. With taking this class and the 1000 speeches we had to present, it helped me get more comfortable about speaking in front of people. She can be a little tough on grading, but I did well in the class.
ONE OF THE BEST PROFESSORS AT HCC. DR. STEIN TOOK MY FEAR AWAY OF SPEAKING IN PUBLIC, SHE IS AN AWESOME AND NICE PROFESSOR, SHE IS ALWYS THERE TO HELP!!
Nice lady, horrible professor. I'm a very successful sales rep and I got a C in a public speech class -_- . She assigns unnecessary how quizzes and assignments, that none of the other speech classes do. She's also a tough grader. THIS IS NOT AN EASY A. Don't take this professor if you want a good grade.
This teacher is EXTREMELY hard. Only take this class if you bust your butt and also are not a perfectionist, because she takes points off for everything. She also embarrassed students in front of the whole class.
I enjoyed taking Shelly Stein’s Public Speaking Class (SPC 1608). Professor Stein continually went above and beyond to ensure her students were striving to become the best public speakers. Her guidance and coaching was very helpful and motivated me to become a great speaker.
Great Instructor enjoyed her class.
Ms. Stein is wonderful about advising us what is expected, getting back to you should you have any questions and providing feedback almost immediately. When reviewing other students submissions, even if the speech was probably not as good as she had hoped, she always had positive feedback.
Great Professor. Even though I was not sure how I was going to do this course, Dr. Stein was very helpful and always willing to help me, she is very good at responding to your emails and giving feedback on your speeches outlines if you ask for them. I took the class online and I did not get to meet her in person, but I would have loved to.
This class is very understandable and I loved how helpful the professor was. Would definitely recommend her to other students and would take another course with her if available!
Dr. Stein is an exceptional teacher. She is very helpful and patient. The course overall is meant to be challenging, but is not overly difficult as long as you put in the effort and listen to the feedback from Dr. Stein. I highly recommend taking this course from Dr. Stein!
Dr Stein is a great professor, I was so worried of taking this class, but she was very helpful. She will respond to your email quickly. Read through the INSTRUCTIONS that way you will avoid getting any points off. She will tell you what to do every week!! If you're planing to take this class online make sure you have an audience for the speeches.
I enjoyed this class. I think the biggest advice that I can give is to be prepared. Do not wait until the last minute to write your speech and outline or practice your speech. Also when other people are giving their speeches be attentive. You can learn a lot by watching others speak. The reading was not difficult and the quizzes were easy.
I enjoyed taking the class with Dr. Stein. She was very knowledgeable and supportive. The best advise I can give new students is to go to Youtube and watch public speaking videos to prepare and to know what to expect during their speech assignments. I also encourage people to take the course online just due to the flexibility it offers.
Great professor, I was so worried of taking this class, but I am glad that I choose her as an instructor. she is very helpful. She'll respond to your emails quickly. Read through the Instructions in order to avoid any points off. If you are going to take this class online make sure you have the correct audience for the speeches. Good luck!
I enjoyed this class!!! I think the biggest advice that I can give is to be prepared. Do not wait until the last minute to write your speech and outline or practice your speech. Now that the semester is over, if I could look back and do it over again. I would practice my speech many times.I would be well prepared and be confident about my speech.
Professor Stein is extremely helpful throughout all the assignments. The assignments are relatively easy because she adds fun to them. If you pay attention to what she says, you will excel.
Professor Stein is a saint getting all questions answered no matter what she is there to help you. Be prepared, practice your outlines they are very helpful, go over your speech one time is never enough but do not over practice. Take a deep breathe you will make it through just ask questions for clarity. Have a great semester!
Took this class over the summer and it was a very busy summer for me. The assignments were not difficult at all and they were really fun. I really enjoyed doing the assignments and more specifically doing the online discussions because that is how we got to know one another. I definitely recommend Dr. stein if you want to have fun and learn.
Two tips: Practice your speeches often and step two...don't fall behind. 6 week courses go by quick and if you fall behind you wont be able to catch back up!
You are given a syllabus with all of your work for the entire semester. I took the course over the summer, 6 weeks, and the workload was not too extreme. Additionally, the work was easy to complete due to all of the assistance provided by the professor. She is awesome!
I really enjoyed taking Professor Stein's speech class online. She was very helpful and responded to my e-mails in a timely matter. She was patient with me also even though I was always late with my assignments. I would suggest taking her class.
Professor Stein was very helpful and has aided in helping me get over one of my fears.
she was great!
She was great! you will love her.
She is a great professor , two key words to pass this course is focus and practice and you will be successful i really enjoyed this class.
Great professor! If you have any questions just email her and she gets right back to you. Assignments and quizzes weren't bad. Stay on top of your work, participate, and always communicate!!!
Dr. Stein is amazing! She's one of the best professors I've had -she answers all questions and helps however she can. She makes everything crystal clear; if you don't know, just ask -promise she'll help you. To get a good grade, practice your speeches beforehand. Workload was not excessive, just make sure you keep up with it and you'll do great!
My advice for students that are going to take Public Speaking with Mrs. Shelly is to manage your time very wisely. Assignments can pile up very fast on you and putting them off doesn’t help at all it just puts you behind even more. Especially in a summer course that only has 6 weeks in it. Everything comes down to how well you manage your time.
Patient and nice teacher, great sense of humor. Just be sure to try and get on her good side, irritate her and she grades u a little harsher. Try and do any extra credit because assignments pile up quickly, especially between big speechs.
She knows her stuff and is patient and understanding with her students but you must put in the work. You must show effort for her to help you and she will embarrass you so don't pull any funny stuff. Have fun in the class because everyone is nervous just like you.
took her hybrid course, easy course, quizzes you get a second chance on, needed it once, discussions, and replies, and some speeches, seriously loved this class! gives extra credit
She's a great teacher, she always gives great feedback for your speeches. She actually wants you to pass and she cares. Everyone is nervous giving speeches so don't worry if you mess up as long as you hit the time come prepared and make eye contact with the audience you'll get a good grade.
This professor gives out way to many assignments,it is very difficult juggling this class with a full course load. She gives you about 2 test per week on top of speeches, discussions and other written assignments. She is very bias and is plays favorites among students.
Professor Stein is very helpful and there for her students. Although at times her speech rubric can be unclear and confusing, I did email her a lot to clarify things and most of the time I was wrong. There are online quizzes due at the end of each week (very easy) , they are based off the book mainly. She is a tough grader and nit picks at speeches
she nick picks your work and will call you out if you miss spell words! Do NOT recommend taking at all, easiest class turned into the class that frustrates me the most mainly because of the professor, not the overall course! She made it 10x harder and more complex than needed
6 speeches total, the course load for this class is heavy! Lots of busy work. She doesn't teach but just rants about the election and other random things irrelevant to the course. I would not choose this professor again simply because I feel as though she makes the class more difficult than it needs to be.
I took her online and she was really not bad at all. Quizzes were super easy (if you read). Lots of discussion based assignments and a speech to turn in every other week. Really helpful when I had questions about assignments.
I like the passion she has but she is an extremely tough grader and expects everyone to give an "MLK like" speech. I am an exceptional speaker but out of 5 classes this one gave me the most work/hw/papers/reading (some of it is unnecessary). She is very clear on what she wants with rubrics and grading criteria. I would not recommend prof. Stein.
I went in terrified of speaking in front of people, but got a 97% in the class. Tests and speeches are easy. Stein is okay. If you stay on her good side, you'll do well in the class. If your speech goes against her personal views, she finds places to take off points (even if your facts are true). Keep it middle of the road, and you'll be fine.
Attendance is the same grade as participation grade, so if you get 10 mins after class starts you will have 10 pts deducted from your participation grade. You are expected to give 4 speeches, a discussion for each one, quizzes most of the weekends, a midterm, and a final. Show up for class, be prepared for speeches, and do the online quizzes.
This teacher does a really good job at teaching the type of public speaking you must know that can help you throughout life! 50% of your grade is speeches and the rest of your grade is quizzes and participation and a few discussions. If you go first on speech days she usually grades you a little easier, so go first! Great teacher overall!
Teacher is good, it's not ridiculously hard if you just take your time in doing your speeches. She also gives you the opportunity to send your outlines to her so she can give you feedback which will help tremendously with your overall speech grade. I was nervous at first but the students and the teacher makes it better and bearable.
This is a fun class that really helps you to get to know students in your class while getting credit for school. Best advice for passing is take time to do research for your assignments and get the book.
Taking this course with Professor Stein was very rewarding. You don't just get an easy A. It is earned. That's what made me appreciate Public speaking more, I learned and developed speaking and communication skills that I will use in my career and everyday life. Use your book for the quizzes , practice your speeches, and always have an outlines!
Shelly was not helpful and seemed to find reasons to lower your grade. After completing a full semester with her she was not willing to change any of her mistakes she made even when admitted. She struggled to be clear on what she wanted from the students. Not very punctual, I do not recommend.
I mean, she's alright. She's like any other teacher. Attendance is mandatory. I know a lot of people who skipped and ended up failing the class so there's that. There's quizzes do every week. Group work. Don't underestimate this class because you can easily fail if you do. It can be an easy A if you make it an easy A.
Took online, 8-week course. The deadlines were very reasonable and she offered detailed instructions and expectations which really help you do well - follow these instructions to a T. Don't procrastinate, the assignments were straightforward but time consuming so start early.
The frustration I feel weekly in Stein's class is uncalled for. Her email responses are generally one line and her due dates are often wrong on Canvas. She does not send out announcements to tell you she made a mistake, and she is in general not very organized. Her feedback is good when she finally gets around to grading your assignment.
I took Stein for public speaking online and it was a less-than fantastic experience. She was not very good at answering emails and gave very unclear instructions and at the end, gave no time to reassure grades in case of mistakes. Be sure to read all instructions and make use of your peers in the class. Quizzes and readings were easy. Good luck.
Lots of work, can get tedious & annoying, and she grades outlines(heavily), not just speeches. However, you will learn useful info and at the end of the course, you will become a better speaker. Finished the quizzes during the first two weeks (free trial) Takes FOREVER to grade and reply to emails, but provides good feedback. Nice and understanding
She is a horrible professor, I do not recommend taking her. She is not clear about what she wants from any assignments. She will take points off for things that were not in the rubric or even in the assignments directions. She takes forever to grade assignments some even more than a month. She will not reply to some emails. 100% worst professor.
This class was very stressful and unnecessarily tedious. Rather than being graded on actual presentation the curriculum is more weighted towards the outline (which really just throws you off) and then things that are not even in the assignment. Save your money, time, and energy.
Dr. Stein did a great job going from face-to-face to online probably because she teaches a lot online. I don't get the bad reviews because she always provided fast feedback. She has an Ask a question discussion where she answers questions & might tell you to look there. So, if you don't check the discussion, then you won't see the answer.
She was understanding and took the fear out of public speaking.
Took 12-week online class. Speeches are 50%, quizzes 20%, discussions & written work 30%. Each week there were quizzes and a discussion or homework. Speeches were every 3 weeks. Average difficulty for an online class. Speeches are the toughest. Do not procrastinate, ask for feedback on your outline/visuals and you will do fine.
I took the class online & dreaded it. Still not a fan of speaking in front of people but Dr. Stein provided a lot of feedback & support. When COVID quarantine hit, she eased up on the audience requirement to only household members, delayed quiz deadlines to the last day & had a no excuse required, late submission w/o penalty policy. Very fair.
I dreaded taking this class but was very happy I ended up with Dr. Stein! She was was really interested in my speech topics. She doesn't care so much about your delivery other than eye contact. If you submit your outline for feedback before your speech you will receive an easy A on your speech.
I took her online Spring 2020 and I am glad I did. When COVID hit she relaxed all of her deadlines and did not require an audience other than who you lived with at the time. She encouraged me when I fell behind and helped my grade go from a C to an A.
This is information you can actually use in real life!
I added this class late and was lucky to get in. I was even happier when I found out how easy and fun the class would be. I have a lot of anxiety and dreaded taking public speaking but Dr Stein was easy-going and helped make all of the work worthwhile. I would recommend her to anyone especially if you fear public speaking.
Take this class for an easy work-load and an easy A.
I took the 12-week online class and received an A with average effort. There are weekly quizzes or discussions and 3 major speeches. If you turn your work in on time, ask questions, and read the feedback on your speeches, the class is an easy A.
Public speaking was a fun class even online. I learned a lot more than I thought I would. I highly recommend Dr. Stein.
I took SPC-1608 (Public Speaking) as a hybrid course. Professor Stein is not very strict as long as you put in the effort into your speech (especially the last 2). The course is about improving your public speaking ability. The speeches we had to deliver were interesting. Have fun and be creative you are with your speeches to get an A.
She is a tough grader in her speeches. In my opinion, I have done a great job on my speeches but she always finds something wrong in them which makes my grade suffer. She responds to emails pretty quickly which is great and responds to your questions without a problem.
way too much hw for a speech class, 70+ questions from textbook hw. very detailed rubric and is a tough grader. speech is not something people take for fun, ive heard other classes are way easier than this, do your research and pick a different professor.
this class was awful. she is super picky about your topics claiming she has heard them all before.. um you are a public speaking prof, of course you have heard all the topics. extremely tough grader for a gen ed class, ridiculous. please find a different public speaking teacher, anyone is better than her. 70+ questions for hw. huge assignments.
70+ question homework assignments, needing to gather your own set of 6 people for in-person speeches/zoom speeches in the middle of a pandemic, harsh grading on those said speeches. We had to reply to 3 other speeches with criticism after uploading our own, I forgot to do the 3rd and got a 0 for the entire assignment, speech included.
She was a quick responder but she would be sarcastic and rude in her emails sometimes. Her assignments were complicated for no reason and shes a picky grader when I feel like a did pretty well on speeches. I honestly dont recommend if you dont want to be stressed out , confused with no helpful teacher.
WORST TEACHER. she never responded to my emails. I constantly emailed her about explaining the assignments. Insanely tough grader, not very understanding. I would consider myself very on top of work loads but hers was ALOT. overall she wasnt nice or interactive with her students and made an easy speech class WAY too hard. choose a different teacher
Very harsh grader, doesn't give speech feedback before the next one is due. I waited a month before getting a grade on one of mine. If the final speech isn't just right, you'll fail the class outright even if you had an A.
