Though he means well and is a very nice person, he is not the best teacher. He is often times hard to understand because of his accent, he writes small and is very quiet. He also spends a lot of time in class proving already known formulas rather then teaching the material. He also takes very long and hard to follow processes to solve problems.
Not the best at explaining topics, but he really tries to make sure everyone knows the material and gets a good grade. Compared to other teachers, his tests are the easiest (average around 80%) and exactly like practice exams. The final is pretty hard but he doesn't write it. He has a heavy accent so your best chance is to sit close to the front.
He is really a nice guy for he always gives relative good grades. But his accent is a little bit hard to for me to understand.
xiong was a great professor.. I went in having already taken calculus one and being an engineering didnt pass with a c- in professor athanas course. His method of teaching and explanation was so much more clear than athanas' and even though he has a slight accent I was able to get everything.. sit in front.Tests were super easy and exactly like rev
Definitely take him for a night class, wants you to do well, quiet and sometimes hard to understand, but tells you what will be on his exams, weekly quizzes can be difficult but they only count for 15% of your grade along with the online homework assignments, lets you use calculators on first two exams, but not on final.. TAKE HIM
Review sessions were very helpful for the 3 exams. Focuses on Calc and doesn't give many hard questions involving extensive trig fundamentals. Highly recommend taking his class, preferably at night.
Prof Xiong is a great teacher in terms of clarity and helpfulness. He is always patient enough to make sure that everyone understand what's going on! Definitely take him if you both want to get a good grade and learn something.
Proffessor Xiong is the best calc 1 professor. Once you understand his accent he is very clear and concise and he writes excellent notes. He has a great mix of concepts and examples and really wants you to succeed in his class. He does lots of review for tests and finals. If you do the practice problems you will likely get an A in his class.
Moves too fast, doesn't care for class comprehension, writes small, and difficult to understand.
Take him for Calc 1
No preparation for lectures. Does not follow syllabus at all. Exams have questions that are out of the scope of real actuary exams. Avoid him!
He's a really great calc 1 teacher. I had a really crappy high school calc teacher but his lectures are clear. Sit upfront because he can be quiet and just thoroughly study for test 1 and test 2 based on what he tells you to review. The final is always hard so but be sure you do well on those two exams. Quizzes suck but its based on TA.
Sheng is the best professor I have had at Pitt thus far. He does write small on the board and has a thick accent, however, once you understand him, the class is a breeze. He tells you what you do/do not have to know and gives practice problems before the exams.
I had to retake Calc for a better grade. Sheng made class so much easier. Sit in the front of the classroom because he writes small and speaks quietly. He tells you exactly what to study so you can do well on his exams. You'll leave his class with a decent grade but still have to do well on the departmental final which is unnecessarily difficult.
He is a good professor who wants you to do well and is always willing to help you do well.
He is an easy grader and teacher, but expect to not learn much at all from lecture. He is quiet, speaks with a heavy accent, and goes way too fast on the overhead. If you want to do well, you have to sit in front and write like a madman. Exams are a piece of cake, he allows equation sheets and calculators.
Awesome calc 1 professor! Test's are not bad if you study and wants everyone to pass. Take him
Great Calc 1 professor. He has an accent which can be hard to decipher at first but you get used to it. He has very clear grading criteria and wants you to do well.
Dr. Xiong (Jiong) was pretty chill. He always dressed casually and was extremely informal in his lectures. His accent is hard to grasp at first and he's a little quiet, so sit in the front row. He is very approachable in office hours. His exams are pretty challenging, so you will need to study a lot.
The best math professor I have had. He taught in a way that was very easy to comprehend and made good analogies to clarify concepts. Fully prepares you for the exams and final, and genuinely wants you to pass. I would go out of my way to take one of his classes again.
He is a great professor. I am taking him again next semester for Actuarial Math 2. He is so helpful when you go to see him, and his explanations in lecture are great. The homework is generally harder than the tests, so just make sure you go to see him about any homework questions you have and he will answer them for you.
He is incredibly difficult to understand. If you don't have a seat near the front of the room, you might as well not go. Exams aren't incredibly hard, just be sure to study everything, he likes to change study guide question just enough to make them unfamiliar. The textbook and math assistance center will be your best friend if you have him.
An OK professor. He has a very strong accent and speaks quietly. His lectures almost always come straight from the solved examples in the beginning of each chapter of the textbook, which is a shame. He does seem to care, however I personally had a poor experience in which he promised a certain grade cutoff for an A and instead made that the B cut.
Prof Xiong's class is not the easiest, but he is very willing to help you with any questions you have. His tests usually have a couple tricky questions but the rest will be straightforward. If you put effort in, an A is certainly attainable.
Not a great professor, but if you need to take actuarial math with him your stuck. Makes homework extremely hard, quizzes weekly based on homework. Tests are very difficult and made way harder than they need to be. First test average was about 65% with no curve. No way half the class gets the B- needed for the major
Sheng was a great professor. His office hours were super helpful and he was always willing to help out and clarify problems. He cares about students and wants you to do well. Sit near the front because he speaks softly. The accent isn't that bad, if that's all you're worried about, take him.
Just reads his slides which he took from another professor. You're better off skipping class to read text and do problems instead. Quizzes are often on slide questions. Did poorly in 2nd half of class because no diff eq or probability background. class is too fast, but pitt's splitting it in 2 so should be more manageable in the future. good luck
Professor Xiong was great for Calc 1. He goes over examples that are very similar to the exams he gives. He also prepares you very well for the departmental final. I would recommend taking him.
He is really hard to understand not only because of his accent but also because he mumbles. I feel like I would have actually been interested in Actuarial math and could have done well with a different professor. Except if you are majoring in Actuarial Math he is the only professor. Switched majors because of this class.
Took him for actuarial math 1 and 2. His lectures are not the best (he's a quiet speaker) but he is very willing to help you out with the concepts if you have questions. The homeworks can be pretty tough but they prepare you well for his exams and quizzes. Overall he puts you in a good position to pass his class and the actuarial exams.
Teacher tends to face the board and write very quickly in font that cannot be read from the 3rd row out of 4 for seating. He also talks monotone and quietly and is extremely difficult to understand. Writes formulas on the board but does not explain them in the slightest.
Sheng Xiong, although he puts effort into his lectures, is nearly impossible to understand, not because of his accent, but because he mumbles. I've never taken calculus before, and as a result of this, I have an unsatisfactory grade in the class at the halfway point in the semester.
Good lecturer, but is very quiet and has an accent so sit close to the front. He also writes really small
If you have taken calculus before, you will love his class. He does talk very quietly and mumbles but if you sit near the front you'll be fine. He really wants his students to succeed and gives as much materials to prepare you as he can. If you do the review sheet before the test you can get a great score.
If you haven't taken Calc before, don't take this class. I didn't take in in high school and it takes an incredible amount of studying to get a good grade, solely because I just have no idea what's going on. He also mumbles towards the board, which doesn't help. The tests are easy, though, and that's very nice.
Overall, he teaches effectively and prepares you well for actuarial exams. He is in charge of Pitt's actuarial program and is very knowledgeable about SOA requirements and always willing to answer questions about them. He is pretty quiet, but if you sit in the front of the room you can usually hear what he's saying.
Dr. Xiong is always looking out for our grades. He makes the two midterms easier than the final to boost our grade and he gives us tons of hints before the tests and the final. It is hard to get an A because you must get a B on the final. It's best to study with people from other classes and do as many practice exams as possible.
Amazing guy. He will do whatever he can to help you understand the material and pass the final. For my class he made our 2nd exam pretty easy because he felt we wouldn't do good on the final and wanted to give us a grade boost. Pay attention and take notes, do the practice questions in the book and you should at least get a C on the final.
Dr. Xiong is a great choice for Calc. He is always available for help and wants his students to succeed. His class work is somewhat difficult, yet no harder than other calc professors. The depart. is the only reason it's hard to get a good grade - you must get a good grade on the final he doesn't make. Take him if you have the option. Great teacher
He is very knowledgeable about math/finance. He is not an actuary but keeps up with exam requirements and teaches new information as it comes out. Homework is very challenging, but quizzes reflect it. He is very helpful in office hours, but you'll have to do a lot of work yourself to understand the material. Lectures can be boring and monotonous.
Good teacher. Would recommend him.
Awesome teacher for Calc 1. As long you go to lecture, he makes it very clear what you need to know and makes it easy to do well. Great teacher, makes the concepts seem easy.
Sheng is really awesome. Go to office hours!
Really great teacher. Would highly recommend for any math class. He cares so much about all his students.
Really willing to help you do good on math. He really like student who try with math. I got A because he was really good teacher of math. I liked this class.
Awesome guy who wants you to succeed. Clear lectures despite his accent. Doesnt try to trick you on exams and curves well
Sheng knows what he's doing, but really cannot explain the concepts. Not only can you not hear a single word he says, but his explanations are often confusing. He is a good guy though, and is accessible to help and making sure you get a good grade in the class. Overall, not a bad choice if you're good at math.
It is very clear that Sheng cares about his students and how they did in his class. His tests were not overly hard, he gave great tips in lectures, and he gave us extra tries on our homework assignments. The only negative for me was that I was not able to understand him at all times because of his accent and the fact that he mumbles.
He cares about you doing well in the course, he is always available to help, grades fair, and his tests aren't too hard. My favorite professor that i H out of my first year
Sheng is the man! I'm bad at math but he is more than there to help you. He's just a good overall guy and wants you to do well.
Professor Xiong is great. If you briefly go over the chapters in the book before lecture, he clears up concepts you that may have confused you. He really cares that you do well.
I FAILED Calc one the semester BEFORE this, honestly contemplated changing majors, but instead tried to take it again the following semester with a different Prof. Xiong saved my academic career Xiong was amazing and made the course as fair as possible, not only did he split up the midterms into multiple parts, he also curved the class to an 80.
A lot of the Pitt Math teachers are difficult to get along with and grade harshly, but he is different. He gives very fair tests and tells you exactly what will be on them. He is also very accessible by email and in office hours. He is a very fair grader and really wants his students to succeed.
I can say without a doubt that Professor Xiong was one of the kindest teachers I've ever had. He had always been there for me and despite having over 200 students in his class, he took the time to address my concerns and help me understand the information. He's an incredibly nice and thoughtful person and an even better teacher. Highly recommend!
Sheng is the fairest math instructor I've ever taken. He clearly cares about his students and is super accessible outside of class if you need extra help. Calc is a decently hard class but you're basically guaranteed to pass if you take him - homework is 20% of your grade and he curves everything. Great prof.
He is so kind, and his lectures are very straightforward. Early in the semester, he will start mentioning what to look out for on the infamous departmental final exam. Instead of having two large midterms, he split them up into biweekly quizzes that were challenging but fair. He also tells you what problems to expect, which was immensely helpful.
He is super caring! He has a clear outline of what to expect on his exams and he tries to make his questions similar to what you might see on the final. Make sure to stay on pace with what is being taught because falling behind will only hurt you (especially if this is your 1st Calculus class). Attend his office hours!
Sheng is super caring and always available for extra help. His tests are very fair, and he curves the class nicely. Calc is hard, but he does everything he can to make sure his students understand the material.
Dr. Xiong explains concepts well and wants you to succeed. He takes time to go back over material and is happy to answer other general questions about the class. I took calc in high school, so the class may be more difficult if you do not have any background. Study hard for quizzes and make sure you complete the homework. I would recommend him!
Sheng is a really nice professor but most of the time you can't really hear him. If you've taken Calculus before I'd recommend him but if it's your first time doing it.. I wouldn't take it. Calc in general is really hard so just study a lot, do the homework, and go to office hours.
THE BEST calc professor in the game. Prepares you for exam better than the other professors and is very understanding. Sit towards the front, its hard to hear him, and pay attention and youll get an A.
He really wants students to succeed and typically gives an extra problem on the midterms that offer a chance to earn 10 extra points. He is a very fair grader and I found his lectures easy to understand. Homework assignments were difficult and long but there were only 6 and he grades for completion rather than accuracy. I would recommend!
Going to class is much more helpful, since you can follow all his work on the board. He is a little quiet so sit in the front, but he is a really nice guy, tries his best to prepare you for the final and I feel like he did. Homeworks are easy, and weekly quizzes, but nothing too hard. Midterms and Final make up 80% of the grade though
For a Pitt math prof, solid choice. Mumbles and speaks softly at times so sit at the front. The man cares and tells you everything that will be on his tests. He also is an easy grader. However, that being said, calc is hard and you need to put in the work. Study just as hard for the quizzes as the tests, do the homework, and show up to class.
Sheng was the best professor. He is so knowledgeable and gives many examples so it is easy to understand the concepts. He makes sure you are fully prepared for the midterms and the final. From the first day he will mention as he teaches what will be on the final. His class will be easier if you already took calc, but either way a great choice.
Pitt has a typically bad math department but Prof. Xiong was great. From the first day he told us what we needed to know for the final. Use his study guides! Study guides are almost identical to midterms. Work super hard for the final with the problems he gives you, they will really help. Use the book for extra problems for quizzes too.
Xiong is one of the best Profs that you can get for Calc 1. His tests are almost exactly like his study guides and he prepares you super well for the final. Overall, take him if you can!
Xiong is a nice guy, although its very hard to hear him and his Zoom lectures are nearly incomprehensible. I self-taught myself the material since it was easier to grasp that way, and I ended up with an A. It took a lot of effort to do well though. Didnt really like Xiongs teaching style, but his quizzes and midterms are easy if you work hard.
Prof. Xiong is a good choice for anyone taking MATH0220. The course is fairly difficult if you aren't already familiar with calculus, but Xiong cares deeply about his students, encouraging them the whole way. The recitation quizzes are by far the most difficult part of the entire course, but Xiong offers help with them (I suggest you take it.)
I couldn’t understand much of what he was saying and he doesn’t explain concepts. His homework was fairly easy and so were the quizzes. Not too bad of a professor.
Take professor Sheng for Calc1 if you can. Sheng is very knowledgeable about what concepts are usually on the final departmental exam. He makes it clear what topics are worth focusing your time on and his mid term exams and hw are there to help boost your grade. You still have to study for his exams but his study guides help you study efficiently.
I'm struggling with Calc 1 but professor Xiong is awesome. He shows he really cares and wants the class to really learn and succeed. Very good at teaching, his lectures are very easy to learn from. I literally couldn't come up with a negative comment about professor Xiong if I tried. The course is hard but he is not to blame at all.
Professor Xiong wants you to succeed. I am going into the final with a 98% average. You just have to put in the work, and get help if you are having trouble understanding something. 10/10 would recommend.
Professor Xiong is by far the best professor I've had so far at Pitt. If you come to class its near impossible to not walk away with at least a B. Even if you don't come he records lectures so you can watch later. Calc is a hard class, but he makes it easy while still making sure you know everything you need going forward.
This class was probably the best calculus experience ever. He did an excellent job explaining concepts and provided immense examples. He would constantly point out topics that might appear on the departmental final which was extremely helpful. His midterms were extremely fair as well as his grading. It's a tough class but he makes it manageable.
very nice and caring professor! calc 1 was a difficult class but his lectures were very helpful and made it much more manageable.
Overall just a great guy and teacher. Sometimes hard to understand, but provides tons of examples and tells you explicitly what you need to know for tests finals, and quizzes. Obviously calc is hard, but he's a great teacher and explains concepts very well. Only kids to get 100s on the calc final last year were from his class.
This is one of the best teachers I had in my life, for some reason everyone skips class but at least that made him curve the tests, midterms will be curved for an 80 average.
Professor Xiong is amazing. The class is difficult, but he makes it known what will be on the exams and finals so you know exactly what to study. Partial credit for problems is given, but the only grade that really matters is the final. Great guy, really wants everyone to succeed and do well in the course. Would highly recommend.
One of the best teachers I ever had. Cares a lot about students and there really is no excuse not to pass this class. Lectures are clear and he tells you what will be on tests. Furthermore, he grades very leniently and gives as much credit as possible for each question. Wants students to do well and is always accessible for asking questions.
Dr. Xiong was a good Calc 1 professor. He tells you exactly what you need to study for his exams and gives you so many heads ups for the department final. The weekly recitation quizzes keep you on track. I found that complimenting his lecture material with the book readings was beneficial.
Calc 1 is notoriously a tough class but Dr. Xiong made it very clear how to succeed in his class with study guides that were almost identical to his midterms and gave a very helpful overview for the dreaded departmental final exam. Covered all of the content we needed and was very easy to understand and available to help!
Sheng was a solid professor. His midterms weren't too difficult and he graded them very leniently. He's extremely knowledgeable about the departmental final and emphasizes important areas to focus on throughout his lectures. My only problem is that he can be a little quiet when speaking, but other than that he taught you what you needed to know.
You can tell Dr. Xiong wants his students to succeed. He gives very specific practice questions and practice exams that help with the exams and the finals. There wasn't much homework, and it wasn't very difficult. The pace of the class could be difficult especially for someone learning calc 1 for the first time without any background.
Go to class! I can't explain how many direct hints Sheng gave on what would be on exams. However, recitations are disorganized with little communication. Weekly quizzes written by TAs don't reflect lectures and majority do poorly. This just causes uneeded stress when he curves class average to a B before the final anyways.
He is a very nice person, but if you don't have a very good background in calculus it is extremely hard to get a good grade.
Really good professor for Calc 1. As someone who never took calc before, he made topics very clear and understandable. You do need to put in the work though since it is calc. He doesn't assign a lot of homework but with every calc class you'll need to practice. He prepares you for the departmental and ends up curving the class in the end.
This is the best calc 1 professor at pitt by far. It helps to have taken calc in high school, but regardless, he is an amazing teacher. Attendance isn't required but it's worth it to go to as many classes as you can. Do the homework, don't be afraid to ask questions, and you will get an A
Probably the best professor Ive ever had, hes good at lecturing and is very clear about what will be expected of us on exams, take his class if you get the chance.
He used a book for the lecture notes and would just read straight from the book for class. It was not a super effective way of learning so it was easy to teach yourself the information outside of class. There isn't a lot of work in the class, a midterm and a final, homework every week and occasionally a quiz that are all fairly easy.
He had a way of walking through difficult concepts in a way that made them feel simple. He gave extremely clear expectations for what he would ask on exams and always walked through examples with us. I always felt very engaged in class and felt that he really did his best to prepare us for the exams and future math courses.
What a guy. Absolute legend. his daughter came into class and watched Tom and Jerry during 2 of our exams, and I got an A+ on both. Told us exactly what we needed to know for the final exam. Easy class overall if you took AP Calc AB in High School, but he still offered plenty of resources and practice quizzes and exams. Soft-spoken and brilliant.
This was my first time ever taking calc. I never took it in high school and walked into this class with very little background. Needless to say, it was difficult for me, but Sheng made it bearable and understandable. I even received an A on his first exam. He grades leniently and wants you to succeed. Take him for calc if you get the chance
As someone who struggles with calc, I did not find it overly hard to do well in this class. He tells you exactly what will be on exams & gives plenty of practice. He explains things so that you will understand even if you have never taken calc before. He is also very willing to help as he wants his students to succeed, I'd definitely recommend.
I really liked him as a professor. He was a little hard to understand sometimes so I recommend sitting near the front. If you took AP Calc AB you should be fine as long as you study. For his exams he really does try to give you as many points as possible. He posts past exams which are carbon copies of the actual exam with some changes.
He is probably the best calc 1 professor you can take. Super clear about everything that will be on the midterms. He is a great lecturer and explains the concepts well so that you are not confused. He is super accessible outside of class for anyone who needs help. The final was harder than his midterms so make sure you study extra for that.
His two exams were very easy with very high averages. Recitation is mandatory because of weekly quizzes which were challenging. He curves the overall class to an 80% because the departmental final exam was extremely hard. Even though I got an A for all his exams, I still failed the final which can bring you down 10% or more.
I don't recommend taking Professor Xiong if you never had calculus before. He is not very good at explaining concepts in detail. However, if you do have some experience in calculus, I highly recommend him. He curves his exams to 80% and gives plenty of practice problems that help with quizzes and exams. Good professor if you have calc experience.
Professor Xiong was a great professor - if you went to the lectures you were sure to do just fine in the class. The problems he provides from the book are much harder than the problems he would actually ask us on weekly quizzes. He is very understanding too - I woke up late for my first midterm and he let me take it later without any penalty.
Whispers through lecture, will slowly trail off when explaining something then never return to it. Fully expected you to know everything already, and was not helpful outside of class. Was made fun of for seeking out help, and told that I wouldn't make it in his class. I strongly recommend a different professor. And I took DC Calc in HS with a 97.
Dr. Xiong was a wonderful calc one professor. He was one of my few professors who seemed like he wanted me to succeed. He gave two midterm exams which his lectures and homework assignment prepared me well for. He was also very willing to curve our midterm grades so we would have the best possible chance of passing the class.
I took AP calc in HS pros: teaches very well w/ lots of examples, gives alot of practice + heads up comments to help prepare for exams, really cares about you doing well and is beyond fair, funny cons? mumbles at times, quietish, fast and will teach till the last min but u adapt and i think the pros greatly outweigh these minor details
Professor Sheng was great. He does talk quietly and mutters sometimes so sit near the front. He is VERY lenient when it comes to grading. He even changes the weight of exams so the worst exam is weighted very low. His midterms are also easy. He rounds grades if you are close to the next letter. Final is EXTREMELY DIFFICULT so STUDY.
Dr. Xiong tells you exactly what will be on the quizzes and exams in the lectures. He curves and wants you to pass/get an A. His lectures basically use the examples from the book, but he explains the concepts fairly clear. Overall he's a good professor and the classes are worth taking.
Sheng is a great professor. Probably one of the bests I've had at pitt. He cares about his students and is very clear about what is on exams. As long as you go to class you will pass. If you are struggling he is more than happy to help and keeps in mind the effort you put in and reflects that in your grade. All good things to say about sheng.
Good professor that explains things pretty well. Final is very difficult but the curve is very generous. Explains exactly what to expect from exams. Homework was not bad and the recitation quizzes were easy. Overall a good professor for calc.
Probably the best math professor that I have ever had. He always explains concepts thoroughly and is open to questions. He weighs his grading so that if you do well on one midterm and bomb another, the one you did well on is worth more of your grade. I have not taken the final yet but he is preparing us well for it. Would 10000% recommend.
Sheng was a great calc professor. He made concepts very easy to understand and the tests felt easy. He spent the last week of class preparing for the final and explained everything you needed to know to pass. I did very well in the final because of him.
I LOVE SHENG! he essentially told us what was going to be on each test. prepares you as much as he can for the finals and makes sure the class average is a B going into them. Really great overall explained things clearly and told us that he was making questions a certain way on the test to make it easier for us. Does everything for you to succeed.
I just wasn't very good at chem but Professor Xiong had unorganized lectures and was sometimes hard to follow. Not terrible at all but I would recommend making sure there aren't any better options before choosing him. He's a very nice man!!
Had to retake calc 1 after bombing it once before and I was a bit nervous because I felt like the professor I had before was good and it was just a me problem. I can easily say he is the best math professor I have ever had. Makes things as easy to understand and is willing to work with with you.
Sheng is the GOAT. He clearly cares for all his students and did his best to get everyone the highest grade possible. Going into the final, most people should have around a B or higher. His midterms and quizzes are easy. The final is very tough but that's the case for Pitt math. Study hard and you should easily get a B or higher.
Calc is hard, but I felt very prepared with Sheng. He is a really nice and caring guy, and he does everything he can to give us the highest grades possible. He lets you know exactly what he will be testing, and gives lots of examples. I felt very well prepared for the departmental final with him.
Amazing professor who actually cares and makes calc easier. He will tell you what to focus on for the exams and final-- listen to him
Absolutely amazing professor. He really wants you to get a good grade and tells you what is one the exams and final. He works with you so that you have a better understand overall. Take him if you get the chance.
Best math teacher I've had in my life. He's so sweet. Midterm content is exactly what he teaches in class. Records every lecture via zoom in case you're sick. Go to his office hours if you're struggling. He also doesn't take off too many points for silly mistakes. I made a stupid calculation mistake during the first midterm and still got a 100.
SHENG IS THE GOAT!!! I took calc in HS and was very confused about integrals and he made me understand. now I am a boss at integrals. He makes everything about calculus feel so logical and clear and everyone i know who had him scored really high on the departmental final (including myself). Wish I could take him again but he doesn't teach calc 2 :(
I'd say Xiong is a solid professor. Has a slight accent but is otherwise clear and concise with the material in class. Very approachable and willing to explain concepts. Do the practice sets and you should be cruising.
Took Sheng for Calc after failing it once, incredible professor. Online homework was tough, but his exams were exactly what he taught in lecture, practice problems, and recitation quizzes. Did excellent on both midterms but my lack of effort on the online HW and departmental final brought my grade down. Put in the work & you'll do well.
Great professor, explains the concepts very well and is clear about what might/will be tested. I think he prepared me very well for the department final. Would definitely recommend him for those who have taken calc in high school.
Sheng is my king for life. He is soft-spoken during lecture, but it was fine!!! He curved midterms so you did well on them, depending on the grades for each he made one worth more than the other (typically midterm 1, easier). Gave us exact tests from prior years and keys as practice exams. Quizzes were easy, depends on your TA.
Sheng was amazing. The day before every test he would go over a sample test with almost identical questions. Everything was curved significantly and he did so many examples.
Professor Xiong was chill. His lectures were super clear and he made sure to tell what was going to be on the midterms and final exam and what wasn't. He sets you up for success and I really respect that. Take him if you're gonna take calc 1
Only true complaint about this class is the use of LONCAPA for homework. Terrible website. The professor grades your work very fairly and you'll usually receive full credit even if you get a wrong answer due to a dumb mistake such as forgetting a minus sign, or a 1 turning into a 7 due to my terrible handwriting. Pretty nice curves on the tests too
as someone who avoided calc throughout high school because i was scared - TAKE DR XIONG!! his tests are tough but fair, he provides practice exams and curves. his TAs are AMAZING (shoutout Manraj) and helped me outside of office hours to ensure I fully understood the material. Recitation quizzes are hard tho, especially in the time allotted.
I highly recommend Dr. Xiong! He demonstrated unique mastery of course content and dedication to student success. His exams prioritize comprehension over memorization, and he promptly addresses student inquiries with clear communication. Future students will greatly benefit from his class. I suggest that you ignore the unfortunate negative reviews.
He clearly tells you what kinds of problems will likely be on his midterms and the final. He curves when the average isn't even that low. The final is kinda tough, but its departmental so nothing he can do about it. His lectures are easy to follow and he has lots of practice exams and problems to help you.
He taught from slides and goes through a LOT of examples, which is really nice considering the content. Midterm and final were "curved" (he had his own method) and you can tell he genuinely wants to see everyone do well in his class. Great prof and great guy
Good teacher, he curves major exams and goes in-depth into subjects. He spends a lot of time making proofs for his concepts which honestly confused me more, but aside from that he's not bad. Just make sure you can tell the difference between when he's teaching important stuff and when he's proving a concept.
Dr. Xiong is the goat! I took Calc AB in highschool and decided to take Calc 1 again and he explained concepts so much clearer than my past teachers had. He gives practice final exams from previous years which is extremely helpful. If you ever need help outside of class he is easily reachable and is passionate about students learning.
I love his teaching style and is great at explaining concepts. Definitely recommend Dr. Xiong for Calc
He is very clear about what will be on exams. Explains important topics very well and tought towards the departmental final. He is much better then a majority of professors for calc 1.
He's not terrible but he's lectures are so boring and will literally make you fall asleep. You need to study by yourself most of the time because he doesn't really teach anything he just does problems and talks to himself most of the time. I won't recommend him, instead, take Dr. Yust for 0220
Probably the best Calc 1 teacher at Pitt!! Lectures with many examples similar to the midterms. 2 midterm test with a curve if the average is below 80%. Overall makes Calc 1 understandable and very helpful.
Dr. Xiong is the best professor at Pitt. I would take him a hundred more times if I could. He is very passionate about calculus and makes tough topics easy to grasp as a student. He is also incredibly lenient, nice, and wholesome. Such a great professor and an even better human.
Dr. Xiong was the best professor I have ever had at Pitt. I say that as someone who came into the semester absolutely dreading calculus. He is such a caring professor and will always teach in a way that makes hard concepts understandable and, sometimes, fun. If you need to take MATH0220, you need to take Dr. Xiong!
Dr. Xiong taught exactly what you needed to know in an easy to understand way and ensured his class succeeded, he was a really caring professor too! Most important thing would be to attend the lectures because its easy to fall behind and make sure not to get caught up in the proofs, he tends to fall down a rabbit hole. 100% recommend him for Calc 1
MY ALL-TIME FAVORITE PROFESSOR I EVER HAD. No professor will ever reach his level of care, patience, and kindness. I can't explain how sweet he is and how amazing he is at teaching cal to those who do not have a strong foundation like I did. He helps his students tremendously, so don't be afraid to reach out if you need help. Take him! Trust me
Omg!! literally if you want to pass this class take him as your professor. He cares about his students and literally what is in the review packets is what will be in the test.
The Calculus at Pittsburgh is not great but he is likely one of the best options. Just work hard and do your best and you should do fine in this class. YouTube is a great resource if you need any help.
Calculus is terrible at Pitt, but in Prof. Xiong's class, I actually didn't dread it. The way he explains things just made sense to me. His tests are difficult, but everything he does is in preparation for the department final, which is notoriously awful. I wish I got to know him more because he seems like a sweet guy.
Professor Xiong is a caring instructor who makes calculus understandable. The review packets closely match the exams, and Unstuck study can supplement your studies. Attend class, do the work, and you'll likely do well.
Lecture slides were awful and outdated, so I had to self teach myself everything. Homeworks were very difficult too. The TA was amazing and carried me through this class. Quizzes were given in recitation, but the TA explained the content very well so that we would do good on the quizzes. Exams were 70% of grade.
Sheng is a great prof. I took calc in high school, but he made the class very easy for people who didn't. Before the two midterms, he told us exactly what would be tested and gave us super similar examples in class, plus he graded them super leniently. The final was the hardest exam, and even that was super easy if you did his practice material.
Prof Xiong spends more time focusing on the "proof" of how topics work rather than prioritizing the actual material being tested on. Weekly homework assignments were AHEAD of the lecture material while weekly quizzes were BEHIND the material. His favorite line is "You learned this in high school." Do not take him if you never took highschool calc
He was a cool professor. He cared about his students, gave helpful tips for his exams, and curved the final beautifully. He taught assuming that you had calc experience. Midterms were fair, The Final was slightly harder but if you practice you're straight.
Sheng is a great guy, but he shouldn't be your first option unless you already have a good foundation in calc. He tells you what is going to be on the midterms and finals, but in lectures you mainly complete practice problems and briefly review concepts. He definitely isn't a tough grader. You'll do fine if you study, but the course itself is hard.
There is a quiz almost every week during recitation. The exceptions are the weeks around exams. If you pay attention and do practice problems you shouldn't have a problem with difficulty of the class. The quizzes every week are not that bad, but idk if its just my TA but we got like very little time on them so that made it harder than necessary.
Prof Xiong cares about how his students perform and is willing to bend with the class if they are struggling. He is funny in lectures and explains concepts very well. Overall I could not have asked for a better Calc 1 prof. I would not recommend a 9am with him; he lulled me to sleep most Mondays.
He is a great dude and cares for his students. He gives lots of examples during class that are similar to the ones on the exam. The final is heavily curved and the midterms are curved by the highest class score. Calc at Pitt is hard, and this is the hardest class that I have ever taken. However, the lectures lulled me to sleep... especially at 9am.
Good luck lol
Best professor for calc 1 in my opinion. The entire class is centered around success on the exams. He will outline EXACTLY what you will need to know (with exact examples) on each exam and even the final. Accent is there but he speaks really good English. Quizzes can be tough but have minimal impact. Overall super reasonable grader and very caring.
Professor Xiong was such a good professor for calc 1. His lectures were very informative and he went through many examples. Before every exam he would go through topics that would be on the exam and give examples. To top it off he was such a nice guy and very helpful with his office hours. I would 100% recommend him to anyone taking calc 1
He has a thick accent which made him hard to understand for me, but hes a good guy dont get me wrong. I dont like how dependent the grade is on your midterm and final performance, plus we have a quiz every week, which wasnt terrible but yeah. I dont recommend taking him unless youve taken calc in HS alr.
Kind grader, but difficult to understand and moves through problems very fast. After taking calc 2 with someone who takes time with each example, it was clear how much his teaching style affected my learning. Somewhat accessible outside of class. Great person, don't recommend taking.
I stopped looking when crossing the street on my way to his class
Calc at Pitt isn't great, but if you are going to take anyone, I highly recommend you take Dr. X. He prepares you well for his exams and the final. He is also a very generous grader and shows you exactly how to go through the problems. Throughout the semester, he also points out if certain questions are on the final and how they will be graded.
I personally would not recommend taking him if you didn't take calculus in highschool. He has an accent which made it hard to understand. He doesn't post the notes he takes during class, instead he posts his past note which are very hard to read. He is very nice and caring but, I couldnt learn from him. I would not take him again.
Prof. Xiong is truly one of my favorites of all time. He is so thorough when teaching concepts, grades very generously, and is always willing to help. He curves exams and the final and preps you well for them. I took calc in high school, so this class was not extremely hard, but even if you didn't it's manageable! Take him 100%!
Dr. X is very transparent when it comes to exam content, and the sample exams he provides align very well with the actual tests, which I greatly appreciated. He does teach very quickly, and it was often difficult to keep up, I resorted to YouTube videos and knowledge from high school calc. He was a good professor, but it helps if you took HS calc.
BLESS DR XIONG! He's shy in class but so nice during office hours. His lectures are all about doing problems on the final exam so expect to get a little lost if it's your first time with calc. BUT TAKE HIM! He will prepare you the most for pitt's dreadful calc final and his exams are the same as his practice tests. Got a 95% uncurved on the final.
In my opinion, Dr. Xiong did a great job teaching Calc 1. I've heard Calc isn't great at Pitt, so I was grateful to have him. He had weekly quizzes (except during midterms), which were easy if you studied. His exams were manageable, and he was always helpful with doubts, though email replies took a few days. Great professor!
Attend all lectures and recitation quizzes, complete weekly LonCapa homework, and study for the midterms and departmental exam. The professor is fair, gives partial credit, and is helpful during office hours. Even if you think you're failing, consistent effort can lead to success. Great teacher, 10/10.
Sheng is a decent calc professor for Pitt's math dept. His exams are extremely predictable; he basically tells you what is going to be on it. He also curves them a good amount. He prepares you for the final pretty well, but there were a few topics on the final that he didn't talk about (only small things tho). Imo, you should def take him.
His lectures are useful but if you plan on taking exam FM, you will probably learn most of the content on your own, so they aren't really necessary. The tests are pretty difficult but fair, and the quizzes are super easy. Overall, he is a good professor, and super kind and chill.
He is very kind and prepares you very well for exams. There is a pretty big language barrier, and he tends to mumble.
A patient and friendly professor who covers the material thoroughly and looks out for students. Weekly quizzes are manageable. Grading is fair but has clear standards, with credit given for effort. Note that some more challenging theoretical concepts are covered in class, but it's not critical if you don't grasp them fully.
Great guy, I've had Sheng for almost all my actuarial classes and he's one of the main reasons I'm still in the major. Clear grading requirements and sets a good level of expectations for each class.
I found Sheng Xiong incapable of preparing me for both homework questions and exam FM questions. I went to five of his lectures before deciding that my time would be better spent watching infinite actuary videos than attending class.
Probably one of the best professors in the math department here. He gives practice exams that are very similar to the actual exams, has clear and thorough notes, and prepares you for the final really well. He explains all of the concepts in a clear way - 10/10 recommend!
