He's a new prof i think. Victor is a nice man, you can tell he cares about his students and tries to help as much as possible. His midterms and marking are very fair. My only issue is his accent, he's quite difficult to understand.
Great guy really cares about his students and wants them to succeed he does whatever he can to help. Very helpful when you email him and go to his office hours!
You cant understand a word thats coming out of his mouth. Dont take him.
Very organized lecture notes and truley wants the students to succeed (replies to emails promptly). Only downfall is his thick accent however if you do the problems assigned and attend all lectures its an easy B+
HE IS THE BEST PROF AT RYERSON. THEY WAY HE SAYS IF IS TRADEMARKED. EEEEEUUUUUUUUUFFFFFFFF
Super nice, even though he has a thick accent, I actually understood the lesson for the most part. I expected to dread statistics, but I'm actually learning with this guy. He's a pretty good teacher.
HE IS THE BASED GOD OF RYERSON NO ONE IS BETTER THAN VICTOR... YOU MUST TAKE THIS PROF IF YOU HAVE STATS
This professor is the best!He really wants student to succeed! He got a strong accent which it's easy to get over with. Attendance is extremely important! Also, something that makes this professor mad and feel disrespected is when people leave when he gives his lectures. So, if you want to leave, just leave in break.
This prof was super hard to understand, although he has lived in Canada for many years his accent is still very strong. He also gets really mad during lectures when people leave and gives a lot of a lectures to students about going to class. I found the textbook more helpful than the professor.
I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND HIM TO ANYONE!!! HE DOESN'T TEACH YOU HOW TO USE THE CALCULATOR!!!
Nice guy terrible teaching : /
Nice guy, terrible teacher. He didn't provide any practice questions, or examples of problems in lecture notes.
He didn't provide any practice problems / examples. Lousy teacher.
The worst teacher I have ever encountered. He has an extremely thick accent so it is literally impossible to understand. He reads off the slides and does not give examples in class. Yet his tests were virtually impossible! AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Very hard to understand which makes the lectures painful to sit through. Makes tests in a way that you are unable to use the calculator and will need to know all the formulas. Course project is very easy.
Great teacher, really knows his material and can answer any question you have. Has an accent but took one class to get understand it easily. I would love to take another math course with him again.
So yes, thick accent. But I loved this guy. He was such a nice guy. I felt bad when nobody was showing up for his lectures, he was a tad bit upset. I studied off the power points more than actually listened to him because it is difficult to understand him. I wouldn't retake his course though.
The most arrogant prof ever. Very hard to understand, test are challenging, and slides are very useless. You're better off buying the book than going to class.
Not a very good professor. He knows his stuff when it comes to stats but it is so hard to understand him because he speaks so fast. I learned nothing in this course and taught myself the entire course using the textbook. Going to his lectures are pointless
He gets easily frustrated and annoyed when you ask for clarification. Makes simple concepts seem intricate. Very arrogant.
Drop and change to another prof if you can. He was hard to understand but it's like he's unaware of that and gets frustrated when you ask him questions. Textbook will be your one and only friend if you have him. Group project he assigns is challenging, and he tells you to google it for how to use the software. Over-complicates easy concepts. AVOID!
Has a heavy accent, but when asked, he slows down and takes time to clarify anything you didn't get. Always willing to help, just ask him! To do well you must do practice questions and understand how to use the calculator. He posts helpful practice tests, and takes up practice questions in class. Very easy to pass, just ask for help and practice!
Great prof!!!! Had him during my first semester at Ryerson. Has a deep accent but is easy to overcome. His lectures are very important and are exactly whats on the quizzes/midterm/ exam, make sure you attend every class and study his slides. Overall great course and prof. I would take it again.
Genuinely a good teacher. If you come to class and read the lecture notes you will do fine.
Had him my first semester at Ryerson, was absolutely terrible. He had a thick accent, and when I approached him after class to clarify he was always in a rush and never spent more then a minute explaining. Complains to much about class attendance and doesn't focus on fixing his teaching methods.
He has a very thick accent and was not helpful at all. I would recommend dropping his class immediately and switching into another section. The textbook is necessary if you want to pass the class. He does not answer questions and is very arrogant.
This professor has an accent, but it only takes one or two classes to get used to his teaching style. His tests are easy and very fair. He is not as bad as everyone portrays him to be - just go to class and read the textbook.
Honestly if you go to class and pay attention its fine, but thats where the hard part comes in. His accent topped with the speed he goes at just doesnt work, it becomes so hard to understand him. if you miss anything or come after class for help all he'll say is you should have listened to class and not even answer your question. very arrogant to.
No disrespect to Prof Xie, I'm sure he is very educated and knowledgable in Stats. However he does not speak English and therefore should not be teaching math in English. It is Ryerson's responsibility to make sure before they hire someone to teach students who are paying thousands of dollars that the prof speak clear, understandable English.
Overcomplicates simple concepts. Why pay hundreds of dollars, when the textbook is more helpful than the professor.
Obviously from the majority of the reviews you can see that he has a thick accent. However, aside from that he is a very good professor. His tests are really fair, he assigns questions to practice. He is very passionate in class, and tries to make everyone understand the concepts. The course itself is hard, if you practice you should do okay.
A passionate professor, however, If you're not particularly good with statistics, then he really won't be much help to you either. Also, his heavy accent won't make the lectures any clearer. You'll most likely find yourself looking to the textbook for help, which can be tedious. There should be more profs for QMS442, otherwise you'll be lost! GL!
Was very hard to understand because of his accent, and did not answer questions. Was quite arrogant and called out students without reason. Look for an alternate professor.
He has a very thick accent :( I never understood anything he said, even after trying so hard. Class tends to get boring. He tries to explain the concepts but just can't do it. Choose a different prof if you can or get ready to teach yourself everything. He is nice but his accent is a big problem.
He has a thick accent, thought I'd get used to it but I just couldn't. His tests are fair, but you're better off studying from the textbook. Honestly, Ryerson needs better math profs & more profs that speak proper english, especially for stats.
So I am taking STA302 with him at U of T. His explanation is vague. He talks fast with accent which affects the quality of the lecture. Students are confused, and his test is not fair. Only 5 of the whole class passed the 2nd test. If you want to challenge yourself, go ahead, avoid him otherwise.
Life ruiner, GPA ruiner, Unclear, NOT worth it, DO NOT take him. I cannot express this strongly enough. He won't help you out with formula sheets or allow cheat sheets. His tests are designed to screw you up.
Nice guy, but you cannot understand what he is saying at all. He has a very thick accent and even with a microphone it was still hard to understand. The tests were very difficult and he did not explain concepts very well and did not show the class on how to use the calculator.
Victor's accent makes it so hard to understand him. We also gets frustrated when we don't come to class, it's because nobody understands him!!!
Well, he has a thick accent. I got used to it eventually(although sometimes i have no clue what he says). GO TO HIS LECTURES!!! TAKE NOTES! Sometimes, he will teach things that are not from the slides he posts! He also puts those things on tests so BEWARE! HIs tests are fair but some questions are super tricky so read carefully!
Professor Xie is very arrogant and lets it be known his dislike toward people not going to class, but fails to understand the reason for that is not because they're lazy, but because they have no idea what he's saying. Take this with another prof if you can or in the summer.
He's so caught up in his false sense of importance that he fails to grasp that no one can understand him through his accent. He is so confusing that I ended up leaving lectures understanding the concepts LESS than I did going into the class.
If you get him as a Prof, drop out!!! he's the worst.
I don't think I've ever disliked a professor as much as I do this professor. He does make some stuff on his exams based off lectures, but he's so bad at teaching his lectures still aren't worth showing up to.
GPA ruiner. You have to be both intelligent and hard working to excel in this class. If you are just hard working, sorry this class is not for you (nor is this prof). You can still get a B maybe but never an A- or above unless you are actually smart. cheers. My advice is to go to class anyways because he puts at least 1-2 qs from lecture.
One of the worst profs I had so far. Barely speaks English so coming to class was pointless. He got mad when people stopped showing up to his class but didn't realize that we couldn't understand him. Barely prepared you for tests and you end up teaching yourself. He is very rude and even laughed once when a student incorrectly answered a question.
He is very difficult to understand. You need to be prepared to put in extra effort to understand what he says and also do the readings & practice questions. Although he provides hints as to whats on exams, its easy to lose motivation to do well in this course with him. If possible, select another prof or simply be ready to put in more work.
Prof. Victor has the potential to become an amazing lecturer. However, it is difficult to understand what he is saying. it took me awhile to get used to it, but again I still miss some of the topics he is trying to explain. I end up studying from the textbook and look up some YouTube video.
You can tell that the guy actually puts a lot of effort into his lectures. However, the problem is that he talks fast with a combination of a very heavy accent. You won't understand what he says, and if you go to class and actually try to understand him you'll burn out in 5-10 mins. So most of the class doesn't show up.
Victor is a nice guy but that's just about where the positivity ends for him. His lectures are AWFUL you cant understand him at all. He also teaches all of the formulas in depth, this would be good except for the fact that you don't use them on the exams. The key to this class is basically learning how to use the calculator. switch prof's ASAP!!
Best professor in Ryerson. easy 4.33. Go to class and you are set for the exams. Textbook not needed.
I don't think Victor's a bad professor. He does make you work hard, but it's for your own good. You don't just come to this class because you were told not to come because it's your passion. I know he teaches lectures that doesn't affect the exam but not everything have to be tested on you. This is just for your understanding knowledge.
Couldn't understand a word he said in class. Studied by using the internet and together with some classmates to figure out questions. Unfortunately, you're stuck with him if you're in Accounting and Finance. Good luck is all I can say.
Just don't. You will end up teaching yourself from the textbook if you get him. Cannot understand him AT ALL. He teaches you all of the formulas but you don't even need them, the key is the calculator. All questions on tests and exams are based on the calculator functions. Lots of online homework questions (one week had 40+).
good prof but is misunderstood because he teaches difficult courses nowadays students expect to pass and do well in a course without doing the work He has an accent but you can understand him after a short while and he really cares about his students
If you have the choice then don't take this prof but i think he's the only one that teaches qms 230. He knows his stuff, but he also talks very fast and has a thick accent. The exams and test are easy but make sure you do the homework and fully understand how to use the calculator. Ask questions and you will be fine.
Taught myself the course with the two textbooks for QMS230. His lectures were mainly theoretical and did not provide enough examples. The calculator is a must - it will get you through the homework, and tests. There was 1 group assignment that was easy if your group was willing to do the work. Weekly homework.
This professor is extremely hard to understand, he has a thick accent. I went to a couple of lectures and as hard as I tried, I could not understand a thing! (And this is coming from a person who has immigrant parents who speak with accents). This course is already challenging enough. Your bestfriend will be the txtbook, your calc. & ur cheat sheet
He's a gem, go to class and listen to him. Take notes as his exams are directly derived from his notes
Although he has an accent that is a little bit hard to understand, you get used to it. Also the most important is that he really wants students to learn and means well. He cares a lot about attendance but it's worth going because there won't be surprises on tests if you go to class. Better to read the chapter or lecture before class.
Unless you are ECN major, I'm assuming you are searching for Shengkun Xie's rating because you did not do course intentions... AVOID if POSSIBLE (coming from a 3.8 cGPA student)
Victor is a very caring professor. He wants his students to learn and do their work. Yes, he is very difficult to understand but if you have a textbook and DO THE WORK you wont have an issue. He posts additional problems on D2L, and if you do those you'll be fine on the test. You WILL have to work hard to get an A. The project is really easy 5%.
Terrible professor. Can't understand anything he says, speaks too quickly and assumes everyone already knows everything. Also he's degrading to students who ask questions. Do not take this course or any course with him unless you want to fail.
Best professor ever, I LOVE him and if you try you will get even a 5.0
Hard to understand. Boring lectures.
Impossible to understand a thing he says, and you don't know exactly what to study for. Doesn't teach us how to use the calculators, or solve any questions, only explains the abstract concepts and theories. Often goes off tangent talking about things that aren't even applicable to this course. I wish there was another prof teaching this course
Terrible. Doesn't solve any questions with the class or explain how to use the calculator. He rambles on and only focuses on plain concepts. His accent makes it extremely hard to understand. Barely gives us any information regarding tests. I learned nothing from him. Worst prof I've had in my university experience so far. Your textbook is your BFF
Worst professor I've had at Ryerson so far. He's rude, disrespectful and doesn't teach relevant concepts to the course, just talks about nothing. Your textbook will be your best friend. I don't understand how he's allowed to teach, drop the course and take it with someone else if possible.
-always show he is knowledgeable. for example, my classmate ask him questions's answer, he said:" it is a pretty simple question." Of course, he is a prof so he feels simple and easy. -he does not agree with his formula that he posted. The same question, the same formula, my friend was correct but mine was wrong. -can't understand his bad english
He was always willing to help me out with my questions and cared a lot about his students (though you wouldn't know if you didn't come to class). The biggest issue was his heavy accent. QMS 230 is also not easy. The tests and exam WILL have questions that test knowledge deeper than doing a formula on your calculator. These are the mark droppers.
Victor is a a very smart guy. Although his English and communication needs to improve, he makes up for it by having relatively easy exams for QMS 230. Make sure you buy the calculator. Statistics in general is hard to understand, but if you study and learn how to use the Casio calculator, you can definitely get a 90+
hard tests & exams, doesn't teach well. if you get this prof switch out.
Fair and very knowledgeable His English accent is not the best but you can get used to it easily
Fair and tries to explain a very hard subject to understand which is mostly theoretical in Mathematics
Dr. Xie is a fantastic math professor and a very intelligent man. The course content is pretty difficult to understand but if you go to all the lectures, you should do fine because a lot of the material in his assignments and midterms are based on the examples he gives in class. Also he is a very kind and caring guy, I would definitely recommend.
You will need to read the textbook. Make sure you know how to use the calculator. Attending class is not necessary, but it helps if he knows who you are. Do well on the 1st test bc the 2nd test and final are a lot harder in content. His in-class proofs are unnecessary. If you go to class read the textbook BEFORE class so you know what he's teaching
Didn't understand a single word he said in class. Went through the slides like he was skating on ice. He assumed all of the students knew what they were doing and always said "haha easy". The course was based on the graphing calculator however, none of his slides included what functions to use. It just had equations of things you don't need to know
He has the thickest accent ever. I did not understand a word he said and he did not seem to care - also teaches tons of formulas that you don't need. he shows examples in class and doesn't tell you he won't post the slides and brings those questions in exams. Don't go to class , read from the textbook and do as many practice questions as you can.
Easy A if you know stats well, but it comes at a price with this guy as a professor. You gotta read the textbook and do your homework to keep up and understand, because when he teaches you'll likely be confused. Learn how to use the calculator and how to apply it in questions (textbook will teach you), and you will do fine.
WOST CLASS EVER
he is not able to say an english word properly.
Very disappointed with the Dean, Daphne who hired this professor who is unable to say a simple English word properly. We had suffered the entire semester due to the Dean and this professor. Thank you for making our life miserable.
Class notes werent too helpful. I recommend pre-reading an additional Stochastic Textbook to supplement the course. The Midterm was difficult as one would not know what type of questions to expect. Assignments & final were very fair. He is a fair marker and a friendly prof. More clarification & examples on each unit would be helpful for the future
The course is very hard. Read before coming to class as the material will make more sense to you in class. Dont use the recommended book, find another intro book. Notes are ok but could definitely be better and more structured. Fair exam questions and fair grader.
This professor can teach well, but the problem is his accent. It is hard to understand him through it, so whatever he can teach well can't even be understood. You'll have to work on your own if you wanna pass.
He is objectively the worst professor at Ryerson. I can't go into the details because of the word limit but check his other ratemyprof page for UofT and you will see what I mean. The rating speaks for itself. Good luck to all of you that decide to take one of his courses. You will need to spend A LOT of time studying own to get a decent grade.
I would definitely steer clear from taking a class with him. He doesnt take the time to explain concepts, speaks to quick, and is hard to understand. If you need to take a course with him I wouldnt even bother going to class. Get ready to teach your self.
Worst prof at Ryerson. It isnt even his accent, it's his speed. The course content is difficult, as it is statistics, but he made me not want to take a stats course ever again. His practice questions are garbage, is not specific enough, and his lectures are awful. If he's your only choice for a prof, I'd recommend switching over to ECS.
This professor is one of the worst at Ryerson. Even if you could understand what he is saying the content of his lectures is not consistent with the content that you are tested on.
It is difficult for any student to understand his lectures as his accent is very heavy. He also fails to respond to emails on time and is not reliable at all. Unprofessional, to say the least and can be touchy with responses and fails to be professional with how he approaches students. If you understand him, you'll be fine but prepare to struggle.
professor was very boring and content in lectures was very different from what he tested on. ensure to do practice questions and learn the casio calculator yourself, do not bother going to class. professor was very unprofessional however course material was not difficult if you study and learn how to use the calculator correctly.
Cannot understand what he says, he's rude, provides useless lectures and little to no practice questions. Do NOT show up to lectures, just stay home to learn how to use the calculator and read the textbook
Came to class to only flex his gucci belt on the students and talk about his research. Proved unnessary formulas that wernt on the tests and had "hidden slides" which he only showed in class; this was the chuck of the tests. AND always laughed and said "haha easy" acting like we were grad students.
Hard to understand, rude, cocky, and overall the worst professor I've had at Ryerson
If you see this professor, you must run as fast as possible in the opposite direction. Zero quality of teaching.
I took this class with him in the summer. As long as you complete ALL your hw, and have good partners for the project, you will be fine!
He's really good at explaining the notes, the midterm was quote easy as long as you follow his lecture. The final was a bit trickier compared to the midterm but as long as you did your work it was an easy A. Very professional professor with organized lecture
Possibly the worst teacher in my life. What does missova even mean?? READ THE SLIDES and do the practice questions of the online questions do to well. PLEASE practice the stats calculator.
This guy gets a really hard time from students in lectures. People get bored halfway through and start chatting loudly, which this prof doesn't like and he ends up spending a lot of his time stopping and asking people to be quiet, which then leads to people grumping about how rude he is. Unfair. This man is enthusiastic and cares about his classes.
He is a very caring prof. Personally, it was hard for me to understand what he was saying because of his accent. A lot of people don't pay attention or talk during his lectures, which causes him to get mad. I was worried about failing the course and reached out to him, and he sat me down after class and gave me a motivational speech that helped.
Teaches math, the one subject that is most intimidating/difficult for most students, and has a THICK accent. He is very smart, very good at math, no question about it, but his accent combined with poor quality microphone in the lecture hall makes the lecture pointless. Borderline not understandable.
MHF4U & MCR3U review essentially. If you didn't take those courses in high school, good luck. 100% would recommend skipping class & learning from online videos. Completely can't understand him talk. Midterms & final are around 10 show your work math questions. USE the exam review that they provide on D2L, the exams are essentially those questions
Read his ratings before and wanted to switch out so bad but I'm glad I didn't. Yes, he has a thick accent but the more you attend class, the easier it is to understand. Explains the concepts well and does a lot of examples. Gives hints about which type of questions will show up on the exams. Overall great guy sometimes gives wise life advice
Mandarin 101 should be a pre-req with this guy. Learned more about this research and Emesowa (??) then the actual course. nice gucci belt tho.
HE IS A GREAT PROFF, BUT I DARE YOU TO UNDERSTAND HIS ACCENT. RECOMMENDED IF YOU ARE GOOD AT MATH BCZ TESTS ARE SIMILAR TO HIS REVIEWS
Don't even know why he's an instructor, no one in the class understands him and most don't pay attention because of this. He's a nice guy but his accent is really thick so its difficult to understand him. The textbook and youtube videos will be your only guide for this class.
He is probably one of the worse profs out there. He simply just goes through slides quickly and he has a thick accent so you aren't able to understand. He also talks and moves very fast without providing examples on the board, expecting you to understand everything. SO FRUSTRATING that he is the only prof for this course.
There's no point in going to his class, you won't understand him. If you ask a question he is very arrogant and makes you feel dumb for not understanding him. I would suggest getting a tutor to teach you this whole course
Up there for worst professor at Ryerson.. Going to class is a waste of time, he does not explain any concepts and nobody can understand a word he says. Does not teach the calculator. Read the textbook and watch youtube videos and avoid this guy at all costs.
He is probably the worst professor at Ryerson. There is no point in going to class you will not understand a word he says. It's a disgrace that Ryerson would even hire someone like him. Very rude to students and treats you very poorly.
Xie is probably the worst professor I've had so far. Besides his really thick accent, he tries to cram each lecture with way too much information. I usually go to all my lectures but with him, I'd recommend staying home and reviewing the slides and textbook, you'll learn better that way.
Waste of time, rude and unable to explain concepts AT ALL. Do not waste your time going to class. Just read the textbook, and do the textbook practice questions with the recommended calculator. HORRIBLE PROFESSOR!
Although his accent may not be clear, the overall content of the course is not hard to learn especially when having the calculator. Study his modules and watch vids on learning the calculator and you should be fine for the most part.
Stay away from this prof at all costs !!! Does not know how to teach
Probably the worst professor I've ever had. Lectures were useless and basically describes how the formulas are derived and not the actual application of them. His tests were manageable if you knew the concepts clearly since his practice questions weren't much help. Although he's a horrible lecturer, I do have to respect his passion on the subject.
Possibly the worst prof I'll ever have in my years in school. You can't understand a single word he says, which isn't really his fault but it makes his lectures useless and pointless to attend. He just posts slides for lessons, which overall are extremely useless and only cover 65% of the content you would want to grasp concepts. STAY AWAY FROM HIM
Lectures are pointless because you won't understand a single thing. If you want an A in this class you just need to practice the calculator yourself because he doesn't teach you it and also go over his slides as he tests a lot of material on it. Avoid him if you can but if you're in accounting he's unfortunately the only option.
Absolute worst professor I've ever had. Disrespectful, terrible lectures, and does not provide any help. He's a very smart guy, but the worst teacher ever. Had to learn the whole course off of YouTube (JBStatistics) which was the only reason I passed. If you can, avoid him at all costs, or risk your GPA.
Such a thick accent that you can never understand anything he is saying. In the beginning, I really tried and he "seemed" like a nice guy during the lecture. At the end of a lecture I asked for clarification but he is just so arrogant and rude. The class is not necessary to attend, get the calculator and use the textbook. AVOID!!!
Do not even try to understand anything he says. Does not teach you how to use the recommended calculator, you must learn it yourself. His classes teach you how formulas are derived, not used. Calculator makes the course 100x easier, don't bother going to his class as he does not teach it. Final was challenging.
His lectures were non-relevevant to tests. he goes off concepts and formulas in class but doesn't teach you how to use them. he should go over more examples in class to prepare students. Better off learning by yourself from the textbook
hint: he shows "secret slides" which he does not post on the powerpoints he shares on d2l. That said, dont go to class, it is a complete waste of time. Instead, find someone who goes to class and ask them for pics of the slides lol. Be smart, spend your time learning the calculator functions as the course is basically how to use the calc
Altogether hes not a bad teacher. His lectures are boring but worth to stay since he gives questions which are good practice. His midterms and exams are challenging but they are all multiple choice and your allowed to bring a cheat sheet. I would recommend buying the calculator as it saves time and helps with the hw but its not necessary.
Victor is very intelligent and knowledgeable but, he is a subpar teacher. It is extremely difficult to understand him because of his thick accent combined with the speed of his speech. He talks very fast and it's easy to quickly lose track of what he is trying to teach. Also, a vast majority of the class skips his lectures so he is bitter.
I have mixed feeling about Professor Xie, he is a very caring professor. This course is not an easy course so you HAVE to read the textbook! You're in University, you have to put in effort. But he is very hard to understand in lectures because sometimes he talks really fast. It was so much easier to understand him when he did online lectures.
Have not come across a worse professor during my 2 years here at Ryerson. He is very difficult to understand, and purposely makes tests harder. His current rating is more than justified. There's also a large sample size to determine that there isn't an error in his rating . He didn't teach me that btw, I learned it myself. Stay away from this prof!
People ask "whats the hardest course in EMS?". The answer is not a course, its prof Victor Shengkun. Among EMS graduates hes a notorious legend. His accent is impossible to understand and he teaches all 3 semesters + cheng school. You have to go through him to continue. You and your friends will remember him for years as the worst teacher ever.
BEST EVER PROF! I took MA170 with him at Laurier in 20220 & I'm amazed! Seriusly, you're the most awesome prof ever! I LOVE him & I love Math due to him!
One of the most horrifying experiences of my life. MISOWA? i stopped going to class and instead studied on my own. This meant i had to teach myself everything and then do homework and practice. i went to one class after the midterm and there was like 5 people out of 90. anyways i wish the best of luck to anyone in his class. bring an advil
Professor Victor was very helpful. He is always ready to help. When i read his rating i almost dropped the course to not get bad mark But he was super helpful and caring. I ended up getting A+ in his course. I took module based course which was online. He didn't have virtual class for summer. He made himself available through ZOOM.
His teaching style? Not so good. I had to teach myself everything, and he just made me more confused tbh. Definitely not taking him again.
You can see he is very knowledgeable and an extremely nice person (so I feel bad to give him bad rating) but the class is so hard, his lectures are unclear, can barely understand what he says and made our tests harder because the average was too high (even though the test was already difficult). Don't take him if you don't have to.
Best prof in my life. Really helpful and caring. Knowledge and reading to share his experience and expertise
Super helpful and extremely nice. Very knowledgeable.
Best ever! Supper nice. Passionated. Test is hard
Full of passion. Love him
Amazing prof!
Prof is very helpful. he genuinely wants students to succeed. keeps good office hours. read text, do assignments, come to class you will do great
Professor Victor really wants his students to succeed and he cares a lot for students. Tutorial questions are extremely helpful.
You will learn the most for statistics in his class, no matter how other said. One must focus on the most positive side.
Professor victor is a statistician and I think he is the only one in the department. You can see from his lecture that his style is quite different as he was trying to let students know the true meaning of statistics and the usual statistical practices. Some mentioned that he has thick accent, but it can be easily overcome
He is the best!
Professor Victor is very knowledgeable and caring.
You can see that professor Shengkun is really an expert in the subject matter. He inspired students to know more about the true meaning of stochastic. Amazing!
Great Prof!
he cant teach idek how hes here
Don't bother going to class. You're better off learning the material yourself because he'll get you even more confused. His accent is extremely thick, he doesn't know how to teach, and he hates answering questions. I gave up attending class after midterms. My condolences to anyone who has him in person.
I honestly have no clue how he is a professor. His style of teaching is so weird and with his accent it is impossible to understand he is saying. If you have any question regarding the course he tells you to meet him during office hours, even though his office hours are after the midterm the question is regarding.
Very knowledgeable and caring. You must attend every class to fit to the style of teaching.
He is so hard to understand and wants to make tests and exams hard to drop averages. He cannot explain things well and makes things more confusing than they need to be. Will not answer questions properly and he gives vague and unhelpful answers. I've never done so bad in a class in my life.
If you want to pass, do not even look in his direction. His tests are so lengthy and the time that he gives you is unfair.
This is as simple as any student is going to put it. This professor does not want you to pass.
dont listen to any of the 5/5 reviews. victors lectures are impossible to understand and his tests are super hard for no reason. does not explain anything properly during the lecture, no point of asking for help. best advice i can give you is learn everything by yourself cuz he wont help at all. good luck
no anglais. hard to listen. bad
Worst professor ever. How is he even a teacher?
wow he should not be a teacher. ryerson needs to do something about him.
Argh can't even begin to explain how angry he makes me. Probably a very nice person in real life and I think we must differentiate the prof from the person so nothing against him personally. But god as a teacher. I did not understand a single concept from him. had to teach myself and this is the most stressful course and exams are long and hard
Get ready to teach yourself. Xie can't explain concepts well, overcomplicates things, rushes lectures, and rudely cuts you off when you ask him a question. Spends too much time showing how formulas are derived instead of how they are used. Xie is also extremely hard to understand when he speaks. My deepest sympathies go out to anyone who gets him.
If I could give a rating of 0, I would. The worst prof ever and I dont know why some people are giving him 5/5. He doesnt even know how to teach and you cant understand a single thing. Get ready to teach yourself.
This guy is a terrible professor. He seems to be a good person but his teaching is awful. You're better off self-learning everything, because unless you go to his office hours, he won't give you a good explanation. He makes the tests and exam harder than they need to be just so he can try to lower the class average.
Accent makes it hard to understand him, and his explanations are overly complicated. Prepare to do a lot of self-learning if you have him as your prof. No disrespect to him as a person, but he should not be teaching this already complex course.
goated. work smarter not harder. accent tough to understand but keep your ears open.
Changed my life. One of the best professors at Ryerson University. The accent makes him a little hard to understand but you get used to it. Gives some amazing feedback, just have to go seek it.
He is the absolute worst professor I've ever had, his lectures are cryptic and he wants the tests to be as hard as possible so a good amount can fail, it's as if he has a quota to meet. If future students have a choice, do not take him at all costs, if you're forced to have him, watch Professor Leonard on YT to learn calculus, trust me.
Unless you're good at calc/stats or have a tutor (I presume those are the people giving good ratings), this guy will mess you up bad. His accent makes it hard to understand him, and he overcomplicates concepts. I even went to office hours, just to leave confused as ever. He's knowledgeable but he just can't teach well. Avoid like the plague
Thanks to this prof my GPA is ruined. AND I'm retaking the course AND QMS230 next semester with him AGAIN! I always got 80's/90's and I'm getting 4.33 in my other courses. I had and 82 in this class, which HE dragged down to a barely passable mark. I've never done this badly in any class in my life. It's a shame Ryerson won't get rid of him.
This guy fully snaked us on the exam. He never told us a single detail about the exam, and he makes it 15 questions longer than our tests with no warning and gives you 6-7 options for each MC question. Impossible to learn anything, please avoid, you will regret taking him.
I would not recommend him as you cannot understand him due to his accent, many would agree he overcomplicates concepts and prepare to self-learn the entire course. A word of caution is he did mention openly that he makes tests and exams harder so that he can lower the class average to where he would like it to be.
I' m sorry but this prof can't teach for the life of him. His explanations are not only unclear, you also can't understand what he says because of his accent and he talks so fast. MESOWA? It's as if he's teaching the class in Mandarin because he's impossible to decipher. Makes tests harder to lower grades. Stay as far away from him as possible
He made my first semester of uni terrible.
Smart guy, but horrible prof. As much as he is a "highly gifted statistician" (quoted from his linkedin), he can't teach or explain concepts well. Plus his accent makes it very hard to comprehend him. Purposely makes tests harder to lower the class average. I don't understand how Ryerson took him on as a prof in the first place. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
i dont wanna be mean but he cant teach, he just points to his pre written notes the entire class. he has a thick accent that nobody can understand even if they tried. MISOWA??? no clue what hes saying. i stopped going to class and taught myself instead. he also purposely makes tests harder to lower class average.
The worst prof ever! If you have the option to switch, DO IT! He cannot teach, he literally solves equations without fully showing his work or a clear explanation on how he solved equations. He also told us he will be making the tests and the exam difficult because the class average was too high.
This prof keeps you on your toes. Why your toes? Because the floor is on fire, and you're on fire. Everything's on fire because you are in hell.
Taking QMS130 with Professor Xie is like purposely running into a brick wall.
He is decent. Calculus is all math based so it's not that important to understand what he says because he tends to speak pretty quickly. Professor Xie is a super sweet guy but the material he teaches is pretty hard so its sometimes hard to follow along in general.
He's a good teacher, he just talks really fast in a way where it's difficult to understand him and the concepts. I felt bad for the most part, he really wants more participation in tutorials and attendance in class. Overall he's a great guy, and the course was alright.
First semester of uni but I already know he is hands-down going to be one of the worst profs I will ever encounter. He can't teach at all, his exams and midterms are literally hell and if I took this in person I'd fail for sure. You definitely have to teach yourself everything in the courses he teaches.
Shengkun Bad
Terrible teacher! Bad Accent! Pray you don't get him!
Sink or swim. Trial by fire. Two terms that you could use to describe this course. To be frank, be prepared to teach yourself because Dr. Xie over complicates and confuses students when teaching. Stay ahead of the homework/content and youll be fine. Good luck.
Despite some of the negative feedback on here, this teacher was immensely generous because he gave me an extra point so I would pass the class. I found the class extremely difficult but Mr. Xie was still understanding and flexible and if you email him with your questions, he's very understanding.
his thick accent makes his lectures hard to understand. he doesn't explain concepts efficiently. if the midterm average is "high" he purposely makes the next task and/or final harder to decrease the average to what he thinks is "appropriate"
I'm not even gonna get into the issues with his thick accent and rushed lectures as the previous posts speak for themselves. This guy can't even prepare a proper test through D2L. We had half of our class receiving 6%+ grade boosts due to errors he made with the questions, some even receiving a 14% boost.
i would rather step on a pile of legos barefoot than take this class again
Worse guy ever. Cant teach whatsoever. I feel totally scammed paying for this class.
The only professor I've ever seen that didn't know how to solve his own questions that he put on the midterm.
He has a very thick accent making it hard to understand what he says. He makes things more complicated and confusing than they have to be so many people skip the lectures and have to teach themselves. The online lectures started with 500 students and ended with less than 100 attending. You'll have to put in a good amount of work to get a good mark.
"You may or may not like me, but i like you" - Professor Shengkun Xie
Great human being. However, my fellow EMS people. If you can avoid taking the class with him, it would HIGHLY be in your best efforts to find a way around him (especially for qms 703). LONG-winded lectures (not his fault it's just the material), and examples on the practice misalign from the test. Be prepared to go above and beyond. God Speed.
Honestly victor is a really nice man, hes funny too. Hes a little hard to understand, and not that great at teaching the material because he goes a little fast. I would recommend just going to his review sessions as they are super helpful and trying to teach yourself if you can.
His accent is too thick and not quite understandable, but that's not his fault. What is his fault is that he goes by too quickly, which makes it hard to catch up. He also calls out students that leave class early.
Choice: Getting your balls waxed vs taking his class, I would also get my nips done too. He is knowledgeable but its pointless unless you are a good teacher. Hard course, study for it and you will be fine. Never doing this again. Not helpful with grading, esp if your grp mbrs dropped and you are left to do it alone. He will not show mercy. Beware.
TLDR: STAY AWAY IF POSSIBLE While the group project will raise your marks, the tests will leap bounds from the released problem sets. You will require going to the lectures, really listing all the while, and take time after class to look over everything through the textbook because both are ammo for the evals. You will have to work tirelessly. GL
The worst prof I have ever had. DOES NOT SPEAK A WORD OF ENGLISH. Makes the tests and exams very difficult! spends entire lecture showing how formulas are derived, rather than actually solving problems. R coding is very difficult for beginners and is used for the course, and this prof expects you to be a pro from day 1. AVOID IF POSSIBLE!!!
A lot of negative reviews. Yes I agree his accent is a hassle to listen to but he posts all recordings, watch them in 2x speed you will realize he CAN TEACH. Don't blame the prof for your lack of intelligence, put in the effort and you can get a good mark if you stop making excuses. Got an A+.
If you want to fail, then this is the prof for you! Trust the advice from a straight A student. Avoid this prof at all costs!
I basically did the whole course by myself. It is literally impossible to understand him. And when you do understand him he just reads of slides quickly. PLEASE AVOID HIM.
Victor is such a sweet man. He really cares for his students and if you ask him for help with your mark he will most likely help. Not gonna lie he does have a thick accent and it is hard to pay attention to his full lectures since it is 3 straight hours of math. But, just go to his review sessions before tests as they are EXTREMELY HELPFUL.
I had no choice but to take him, since there were no other profs. If in my situation, before tests go to his review sessions sometimes exact questions will be on the test. The TA review is also helpful. Stopped going to class halfway and just studied the tutorial questions. He tries hard and cares, its a tough course to teach I guess.
Nice professor but he does not speak a word of English. He is very keen to teach us Mandarin in his lecture.... Bravo if you have him as your professor.
Suprisingly, this class went better than QMS 130 but still wouldn't take this prof again. Try and take bootcamps before this course, he doesn't teach you how to use them for the group project.
he good ngl
Keeping it a buck, i took this guy cuz i had no choice to take this guy, but i actually enjoyed this class.
All my classes I had good teachers but the class with him teaching it. Hes a nice but how can you Learn math when you dont understand his sentences. All he cares about is finishing his slides. You will have to do everything yourself. I couldnt switch out cause everything was full. Class should be called math in mandarin.
How you suppose to learn one of the most difficult subjects with a teacher who can barley speak English
He doesn't like it when questions are asked in class and rushes to finish slides.
He says to go over the h.w and tutorials to be prepared for the exam. However, the exam is nothing like the h.w. The concepts are much more complex in the exam and you only have an 1.5 hrs for it.
He teaches material thats not even on midterms, and doesnt give you enough time to answer questions during the midterms. Most of us had 5-6 questions left with 3 minutes to answer them, and had to guess for all of them. When we brought up our issues to him during the lecture and emailed him, he dismissed all of us. Its clear he will not change.
There's not much I can say tbh. Not a good prof and teaches like we all know the material already. He does the first step of an equation and says to figure the rest out by ourselves. First midterm was mad messed up and the class average was a 35%. Gives useless practice questions since midterms are some next stuff. AVOID at all costs no cap.
He is so bad I wanna give him a 0 but that's not possible so I'll give him a 1. If you see him in your schedule switch, he is not a bad person, I personally he is just not good at teaching the material.
Does not care if students understand the content. Extremely hard tests Study guides he gives are useless
First and foremost, Victor is not a bad person. However, he can not speak English properly despite that he has been teaching for almost a decade. He has a very thick accent and speaks really fast. I only attended the first few classes then I decided to teach myself instead because it is much easier this way.
midterm and final is rlly hard.
He has a very heavy accent which makes it so much harder to understand the concepts and information.
IF YOU CAN AVOID HIM, DO IT! Worst teacher at this school, the accent and his rate of speech is extremely hard to understand. The midterm and finals are hard, and the reviews never look like the test. Best of luck, to you all... I wish I knew this before.
Don't take his class unless you really have to and there aren't any other options. He has a heavy accent and speaks really fast, which makes it difficult for most students to understand him. Unfortunately, the homework and course content is way easier than the exams. Students typically rely on homework to pass his course.
If you took advanced functions/calculus in high school this course is just a recap of math from grades 9-12. There is homework that is graded each week that's used to make up your final grade so make sure you do well on that so it can act as a grade booster since the only marks for this class are from homework, the midterm, and final exam
I dont know if this guy is speaking english
This professor is very caring and wants his students to succeed, only problem is his accent is very heavy and you won't understand anything he says. Just do the MyLabs and you will be okay for the midterms and final. Attendance is not mandatory; you need to do the MyLabs to pass everything. The calculator does everything for you. Just learn it.
Absolutely awful
Seems like a kind person, however, his accent is too thick and he speaks very quickly. He brushes over the slides and does not take the time to explain them in depth for students.
Very hard to understand
I genuinely don't understand why he gets so much hate. Had him as a professor in fall 2022. He does have a thick accent and it can be difficult to understand what he's saying at times. But if you put in some effort, you should be able to get a decent mark in his class. Study up.
The Brightspace was organized and so was all the work but his accent was extremely heavy. He kept saying the word "element" but it sounded like he was saying "adovant". Math is a difficult class to begin with so a heavy accent on top of it made this class very hard for me. In University you have to be able to at least understand the professor.
Although it is very hard to understand him and the material for the class, he is kind and provides good practice videos and exam reviews. The course covers a lot of complex topics so you will have to teach yourself outside of this class. There are weekly homework assignments that take a while and you have to pay for as well.
do NOT take this professor. switch out at ALL costs.
You know when people ask... what advice would you give to your younger self? For me, it would be to stay far, far away from this professor. I'm being so serious-- literally switch to anyone else and you'd have a better time. For your 2024 New Year's resolutions, it should be to swap this guy's class. He doesn't even speak english!! Nothing personal
horrible, just horrible
People always say the worst things about Xie, I took QMS 110 which is an insanely simple course. If you're having trouble with the content, that means you don't know basic high school math. He is hard to understand due to his accent, but I could easily get an A- by following slides and skipping most of the classes. I would study more for the final!
Xie's class can be challenging due to his strong accent, but if you put in the effort, you can succeed. Unstuckstudy AI and the free textbook were helpful study tools that made all the difference for me.
He's a sweet prof its just his accent is difficult to understand. The course is basic high school math, you can do well if you have a brain. I rarely went to his class yet I was able to do well.
Took QMS 110 basic high school math. Got 4.0 and math is not my strong suit. Victor's accent is the only bad aspect of the course. He tries a lot to be helpful and answer questions but I could barely understand. The average was low because the lectures were a ghost town. ATTEND ALL LECTURES!!! and you will do well!
Worst professor of my entire life. His class made me want to drop out of college. You cannot understand anything he says and his midterms are impossible. He overcomplicates every single problem and confuses his students. Stay away at all costs.
seems like a friendly guy who want to help u succeed, but his accent is too much and it is hard to listen to what he has to say
Attending lectures might as well be completely useless because of how difficult he is to understand and his tendency to choose the worst possible way to explain concepts. He is always unnecessarily overcomplicating things, and barely gives clear answers to students' questions.
His accent was tough to understand and he overcomplicates everything instead of explaining it step-by-step, he tended to expect we already knew everything. The exams also were nothing like what we learned in the lectures or like the reviews with the TA, they were way harder. Choose anyone else.
avoid this prof at all costs. can barely understand the man cause his accent is so thick. this course with him will ultimately end up being self taught.
Pros: cares about students, tries his best to answer questions. Cons: very difficult to understand (thick accent) his lectures basically only consist of theory and never really shows you how to do practice problems. When explaining theory or concepts he will give an overly complicated explanation that will make you even more confused.
Pros: cares about students, tries to help. Cons: thick accent, and terrible at explaining concepts at a base level. He always tries to show the "why" instead of the how, too much theory and no application. Clogs up his lectures, as this causes students to burn out by the end of class. if you can find a better prof, FIND a BETTER PROF.
This prof is caring towards his students and wants them to succeed. The only issue is that it is difficult to understand him, which is a problem considering this is a uni level math course. You'll end up teaching yourself everything, so keep up with the weekly topics, make sure your MyLabs are good as they will boost you, and practice a lot.
QMS110 was so easy. Prof was good at explaining. Whole class is 20/20/40 (2 midterms+final) with 20% on weekly quizzes. Did not use a cheat sheet or calculator on any exams. Exam material was fairly the same difficulty as what was taught.
He seems like an okay guy, and he does try to actively explain everything that he does during his lectures, but the one thing that is setting him back is his accent unfortunately.
He is very hard to understand, very caring, but has a very easy course load, and if you study, you can get a good grade. Weekly homework has a lot of questions, but it's an easy 100 worth 20 percent of your grade.
