Likely the most helpful prof i've had. genuinely interested in getting students interested in the material. such a great learning atmosphere. thanks
Great great teacher. Awesome. Just awesome.
Very helpful and genuinely concerned about students well being. A real class-act! Allows students to direct the focus during seminars.
Overworked yet Underpaid! This is an individual who goes above and beyond who also has the requsite skills desired but seldom found in a TA. I wish someone like Sher marked all my papers (although she won't give a mark away, if they are deducted you actually deserved it).
Absolutely phenominal! Sheri will go to the hills and back to help you achieve what you want. Her insight, experience and knowledge are much more than many, and she looks out for you 100%. Made my last bit of time at SFU EXTREMELY enjoyable!
Bad posture, actually expected students to do the reading on time and then got upset when no one did, good course though
FANTASTIC! She is passionate, interesting, and gives fair exams. She is intelligent, and willing to help students through the boring text. She is encouraging and totally not one of the typical holier than thou profs/TAs you normally get at SFU.
Wow!! research methods was actually interesting!! Sheri has an absolutely amazing energy she puts into her teaching, this seems to rub off on the students....good work!!! Sheri is the most helpful and approachable Prof I have ever encountered...Bravo!!! at SFU this really is unusual.
Tee Hee Hee! I gave you a chili pepper!
wow....my experiences are so different. Maybe she is good as a prof but i would never in a million years take a class with her after having her as a TA....she was insanely hard! She practically expected a masters thesis from and undergraduate class!
boring
Sheri is a hard ass but in a good way she realy helped my writing.
I took this class with Sheri because I was told she was fun and made qualitative research fun - not the case. So boring. She doesn't clarify anything. Would never recommend her to anyone.
I would not recommend her to anyone. Although Fabian knows what she's doing, the students have no clue. She makes qual. harder than it should be and the text, well, that just makes it worse.
I would never take her again. She keeps saying that she will explain things later, things will be more clear as we go on, but nothing ever got clarified.
The papers were complex enough but she had to throw more into the mix. Also, I felt like she was accusing us of plagarism every class when we hadn't even handed anything in yet.
Throughout the semster she says things will become more clear, but they never do. When people ask questions in lecture, she asks students to answer the question, and you never get the answer. You learn nothing in this class with her teaching it.
Why are people slamming Sheri, she's incredible? Sure, she asks students to answer questions to get the class involved, see who's keeping up with readings. Plus, she's a university prof, not an elementary school teacher. She's the best. If you're having problems with the course, see her, she'll explain in detail - the genius she is. Love her!
A nice person, very nice and helpful, but makes the material kind of boring. She's well organized, but it's almost too well organized to make it interesting.
Sheri is super helpful. I never knew doing interviews and putting everything together can be so interesting. Go to her office hours and she'll do her best to help you out.
Even though Qualitative research is a dreaded class, I would say that Fabian made it very bearable. The text was easy to follow and her lectures are VERY organized and easy to understand. The assignments are not too hard with enough effort. I never received help from her, but she is supposed to be very helpful during office hours.TAKE 321 w/FABIAN!
hated the class...hated the teacher...her lectures were dull and boring....she said things would get clear...still waiting for that to happen!!!!!!
This course was amazing! The material was interesting and engaging, and Sheri's ability to facilitate discussion is unmatched. 3 hours, once a week, was never enough time...it always went by so fast! Sheri is also highly approachable and personable. I actually looked forward to Monday mornings.
She is such a great prof.. made the course interesting and she's pretty nice and kinda funny. Her notes are well organized. My only gripe is that she should have explained a few things about the exams, like how you have to link names to theories.
hands down the best prof at sfu! she is extremely helpful and very understanding. she makes an effort to get to know who you are; she knew everyone's names by the end. she kept everyone awake on monday mornings. looking forward to taking more courses with her. i would definately recommend sheri!!! if you have a chance, take her classes.
her eyes will make u study really really hard..lol
the worst prof ever! you would have to do really well in her classes to do get a good mark. Extremely boring, on top of that, sometimes you wonder if she really knows what she is talking about. In addition, she is also very aggressive, and unfair, if you do something she doesnt like. Or make a point that is against hers!
WORST PROF EVER!! KEEP AWAY! prof has not interest to help students to succeed, also is useless when answering questions!
Not too sure about the nay-sayers in crim 321, but Sheri was fantastic in crim 104...very approachable if problems arose, lectures and exams were well-laid out for students, and, the best part, powerpoint for every lecture! Midterm was a bit harder than expected in terms of knowing details from all of the different sources, but final was easy!
I hate the way she lectures..every sentence starts off really loud, then fades..really annoying when you are listening to lectures online! She thinks she is very smart and is very agressive, make students relunctant to participate and interact. Expects us to know everything coming into lectures. Average Prof. Exams were clear and no surprises.
Listening to her lectures make me so frustrated. Almost made me death, she will all of a sudden raise her voice very loud. Too annoying to bear.
She thinks she is really smart, but her lectures are not very good. Over complicates things, better to just read the book and figure things out yourself. She tells us to ask questions but she sets the environment where she is trying to compete with you, always asking WHYWHYWHY?? too agressive to promote good easy-going discussions..
Sheri made qualitative methods harder than it really needed to be. She wouldn't give students concrete answers which made it all the more confusing. Class is mandatory so you can't expect to be engaged for long periods of time. Pray you get a good TA and all will be well.
Very boring lectures. Make class seem harder than it actually is. Midterm and final are fair but the MC is hard. You actually need to work hard to get a good grade. Don't let the "breath" fool you. She is extremelly helpful and gives you a lot of hints on what will be on the exam. She really makes it her goal to have her students do well!
Boring lectures. Lecture content was so dry it was difficult to pay attention; however, she does majorly hint at what to know for the exam during lectures. Midterm was difficult, a lot of writing to accomplish in little time, final was easier as there was more time to write.
B-O-R-I-N-G... i totally do not recommend her!
321 is generally a horrible course, but Sheri was really helpful and tried her best to help students understand the material and even attempted to make us appreciate the art of qualitative research. She makes herself very avaialble during office hours (especially close to paper time!) and her tests and paper guidelines are very clear. Great prof!
she was great. this was the scond class i took with her, and the fact that she was teaching it was why I took it. made class interesting and made you think
nice prof, but EXTREMELY picky on plagarism.. and lots of notes on powerpoint, so u either hav to write extremely fast or bring laptop~ just memorize all lecture notes and u'll ace mt and final!
Talks an awful lot in terms. Tons to take in. Not recommended for non crim students, even ones just starting out. Take a few of the other crim courses first so you have a better understanding/grasp before you begin. Exams were fairly easy but required alot of memorization and regurgitation (sp?)
Sheri Fabian is fair to some extent but I feel that she should not be teaching research based courses as her expectations are a little high for undergraduates
Hard prof with high expectations especialli for the research project! Changes the APA guidelines to what she wants. final exam- 3 essay questions , there is no structured review guideline! Stay away from Fabian and teaching assistant : Kristen Sanders who is the most terrible T.A I have ever had !! Get a different professor, Fabian is a hard marker
She is the easiest prof ever! Just do your part, study hard and you WILL get an A. I didn't even have to read the textbook. Her exams are straight out of her notes. If you memorize all the notes, you will ace the exam. How easy can it get??
Very hard exams. Make sure to attend class as much as possible and study off notes with emphasis on feminism.
Very fair instructor. Mainly studied from notes which come straight from the textbook. Not the easiest class, but Sheri makes it as interesting as possible. Managed to get an A in research methods. She even gives you an outline for your paper that if you follow completely will get you a great mark. Awesome instructor!
one of the best crim classes i have taken and Sheri is an amazing Prof!!!!!
shes a good prof but takes Academic dishonesty way too sereiously... she scared the crap outa me with all that talk bout failing the course and gettin kiked out of university for missing a citation... overall she cool tho.. really reasonable bout deadlines too.... pay attention to the book tho... she makes questions on some of the small things
This prof is NOT recommended to anyone. I have to admit I walked into the class thinking it would be a easy. But ultimately FAIL! She doesn't post notes, goes by the notes so fast, tests are extremely hard and scoring system is wack! BUT Sheri as a person, is a very nice individual office hours are helpful, I just think she shouldnt teach 100coures
Expect to work hard for your mark. Expect that you will have to try your very best. And, after you're done her class, expect that every other class from now on will be SO MUCH easier because you kno the essentials needed and you've learned what u need to succeed in University. Take her if you're not an idiot. Highly recommended.
You know,I heard/read so many bad things about her;Which I am now convinced were written by lazy students who were pissed they had to think for themselves(sorry but you're in university and are not allowed to plagiarize)and actually read the textbook/attend class.Sheri makes it pretty easy,is SOOO helpful&WILL cut you slack if you show you care
Sheri is a very helpful teacher and tries to make a tough class manageable. Overall, the class if very difficult, but if you put in the effort you can expect a good grade. Do not get Kristen Sanders as your TA, as she marks really hard and is useless for help. Abby Kolb is the better TA who is actually helpful.
Sheri is very helpful outside of lecture, but this class is boring, and she is very repetitive. I didn't think the majority of the readings or coursework were necessary to write the research paper. The paper should be worth 50% and there should be no exam. Would probably not take a class with her again. TA Abby is great.
Lectures are really long & there's alot of info. Bring a laptop to type notes. Put a star on the sections she tells you..because they WILL appear on the exams. Exams are easy. I only read one chapter of the textbook...and didn't really finish the final exam because it was long and still got a decent grade. Nice prof easy course but lots to remember
Very helpful, takes interest in helping students
She was nice. However, like 90% of university professors, she had a very left wing bias with her teachings. It wasnt a political course, but she managed to squeeze in her opinions anyway. Other than that, she was easy to get help from, she provided a lot of information (take good notes). Tough Marker though
She's a really good prof. Her midterms are really fair and she gives you warning in advance for what's going to be on it. I-clicker questions are awesome.
She's passionate with what she teaches. She cares if you show that you care. Very helpful and clear in directions pertaining to term-paper. Made my 1st semester as SFU better :)
Very good teacher enjoyed her class would love to take a class with her again she goes out of her way to make the class fun engaging and your mark a reflection of the work you put in
i dont know if she is trying to make a point or what but she makes her exams wayy to hard for a intro class she needs to tone it down a little
Sheri is very clear on what she expects you to know for the exams and term paper. If she says that something will be on the exam, it WILL be on there. As long as you pay attention in class and keep up with your readings you should be able to get a really good mark. Her exams are long but if you know your material you will find it a breeze!
Prof is really helpful and approachable. Some of the theory stuff in this course is very dry; however your grade will reflect the effort that you put in. Make sure to attend class and participate in her clicker quizzes; they are relatively easy if you do the boundaries reading. Her exams are long but if you know your stuff, you will do great.
CRIM 321 is generally a very boring and dry class, but she made it interesting for us and tried her hardest to get us involved. As others have said, effort reflects your grade - she's very helpful and nice. If don't understand something, ask for help. You're in university, don't expect everything to be handed down to you.
She is good with lectures but with assignments, she lacks clarity. Only thing she did with assigning the paper is to throw the PDF format of instructions rather than going over the instructions verbally in class. Exam was fair but the assignments are marked hard. She is not really approachable and the TA is not also approachable, even with email.
I really enjoyed taking her class. She gives detailed instructions for assignment that we know what to do in order to get good mark. Very fair exam. She provides us course notes but reading textbook is unavoidable.
tip: when Sherri gives a hint in class that something is going to be on the test, she means it.
Passionate professor who does a good job explaining concepts. Term papers are quite detailed and complicated, so make sure to read the guidelines. Overall an awesome prof. Makes a boring class fun.
When she says in lecture that a certain topic will be on a final, she means it. Really great professor who loves what she's doing, even entertaining at times. I would recommend her for sure!
Great Seminar. Class was three hours, but went by quick. The discussions and the reading material for the class was very interesting. Definitely recommend taking this class with Sheri, you will learn a lot.
AMAZING Professor! She will spent a tonne of time helping you, if you want it. She actually cares about students & is super passionate. Rare to find profs like this & definitely recommend taking her class!
so boring, tests arent easy. lots of memorizing, alot of notes. online tutorials are way to time consuming. Overall this class is way to time consuming for it to be a "100" level. I would not recommend this professor.
If she says its going to be on the exam, she means it. However, this class was the most difficult class for my semester. She is not very clear about anything. There are tons of content to go over.
Best prof I've had during my first yr uni. Her exams are fair, mostly based on memorization. The online quizzes and assignment took up a bit of time. Her notes are pretty clear and when she tells you to star something (meaning it will be on an exam), she means it. She's a very interesting prof and always tells us some of her personal stories.
I was really surprised that Sheri had such a low easiness rating. Sheri is one of the fairest profs I have ever had. Her exams are reasonable and paper was straightforward. If you study and put the time in to the learn the material you should have no problem in this class
Haven't been impressed with many of the CRIM profs in my first year here but Sheri was exceptional. Very fair, helpful and clear in her expectations. Doesn't expect too much from first year students but is still able to push us. Definitely plan on taking more courses with her
Love Sheri! Best prof ever!
Great prof, she knows what shes doing and she is helpful indeed.
I was a little hesitant after the first lecture, but take a "leap of faith" with her. This is the first class that I have had with her and she's amazing. Go to her office hours and she is more than willing to help you with your reserach paper. She's a prof who cares, which is rare. Abby is a great TA as well!
iclicker and how she does NOT post lecture slides makes it so you have to go to class and stay the whole time. As long as you copy the lecture slides and STAR the slides she says, you should be fine. Make sure you use the book. Paper was marked a little bit harsh. Midterm and final were long, just make sure you know your stuff. Overall she's okay.
Overall a good prof (and very fair). She covered a lot in class, which was very helpful. Her exams were sometimes tricky, but she did give out a lot of hints for the exams. As long as you follow directions, listen to the lecture recordings, and review the "put a star beside this" questions you will pass.
One of my favorite CRIM profs! This isn't an "easy" class or a "GPA booster" but it is more than fair if your willing to put in the work. I preferred the E-Tutorials over regular in-class tutorials (minus the fact that they are more time consuming)
This class is one of the most insightful that one can take in their undergrad. Sheri leads purposeful discussions and encourages students to do the same. The class touches on tough issues facing minorities in Canada today so some classes are pretty heavy, but are completely worth attending.
Great class with a great prof. Attendance is mandatory. Sheri often tells you to put stars beside certain lecture slides (which means they are going to show up as written questions on the exam FOR SURE). Would take another class with her
I took this as an elective and overall I wasn't too happy with my grade, cuz I thought I would've gotten a higher grade with the amount of work I put in; but I DID like the class - Sheri's a cool person. She knows her material well and is a veteran in the field. If you wanna learn, take classes with her! But don't expect an easy ride. You must try.
Sheri is a knowledgeable individual that knows her stuff. She is an experienced lecturer and being a first-year student, I found her class to be very fair. Expect to put effort into the class. This class is neither easy or difficult, just plain fair. If you are an A student with a decent interest in the CJS, you will do perfectly fine.
She is an amazing professor if you put in the work. Her exams are heavily based on what she makes you star in lectures, textbook and on guest lectures.
Easy B grade if you put in the effort, very interesting lectures. Sheri is passionate about the course. Guest lectures are especially entertaining, and her lectures and expectations are extremely clear. Quizzes are okay. No surprises when it comes to tests. Would definitely recommend this class!
I don't know why her ratings aren't higher! She is an excellent lecturer and is willing to help all of her students. Her grading is fair and you will do well if you put in some effort. She gives exam hints weekly, and they WILL be on the exam
woudnt recommend easy but a pain
Wouldnt recommend; Avoid this prof!
Took 131 with her and it went alright. Went with her again for 321 hoping for more of the same and boy was I wrong. The expectations she gives out for the final assignment might seem clear at first, but once you get get going, you realize what she wants is entirely something else
Great teacher. She is very clear, and to the point on what she wants for the final paper. Go to lectures, she is very helpful. Gives a lot of examples for how to write paper, and what is on the final.
Great class to take with Sheri. Very good seminar teacher, as she made sure everyone felt respected and comfortable to share. The topic was interesting, and she found new ways to look at ideas. Few paper assignments, but she gives feedback and is there to help you do better on your next paper assignment.
Professor Fabian is very organized and is a good professor for students that are passionate about Crim! She released the breakdown of each section of the midterm and there was an opportunity to review the exam. Super helpful and passionate prof! Would recommend to Crim students.
Workload is crazy. One 8 page paper, a final research project which you work on the entire term (20 pages), plus weekly discussions online and a presentation. And of course the final, which is 3 essay questions. She's helpful and knows what she's doing, but say goodbye to your social life. Boring af
Sheri's lectures are really straightforward and easy to follow, research methods is a boring subject so the lectures are not interesting AT ALL but she tries to engage the class. Wouldn't recommend taking this class unless you have to. There is a HUGE project at the end that takes a lot of time and effort !
Yes, the workload is tough. But this is a required methodology course - why wouldn't it be? She's one of the most helpful profs I've ever had at SFU. She is crystal clear with her requirements and really anyone who wants to put in the necessary effort can get an A. She provides you with everything you need to do well. Slides aren't posted so attend
Course content is boring by itself (I mean, research methods, come on...), but Sheri tries her best to make things interesting and to engage the class. It's clear that she wants her students to succeed and is available for help whenever students need it. She gives good feedback and recognizes effort. I'd take another course with her in a heartbeat.
I like Sheri a lot as a professor, though this class was not my favourite. Yes, the material is dry... what do you expect? It's research methods. She really tries to have people engage through the process of research. She is extremely clear in her expectations, which many other profs are not. She is also very helpful in her office hours.
amazing professor/person, really cares about her students. overall boring class. TA was condescending and rarely helpful, always told us to "ask sheri." sheri is the only good thing about 321. if you're going through a hard time, she is extremely accommodating and there for support whenever needed. Would take another class with her for sure!
Amazing lecturer. Everyone says the course content is boring but if you enjoyed CRIM220 and are serious about research, you'll enjoy it a lot with Sheri. Her expectations are crystal-clear and her feedback is essential for success in this course. If you follow her guidelines and do what she tells you to do. You'll end up with a decent grade.
Sheri is a great person, and a very accessible and helpful person. That said, this class was extremely difficult--you have to conduct your own research study, which takes no less than 60 hours of work, if not more. TAs are hard markers, and expect you to adopt Sheri's method of thinking and if you don't, you won't do well. Take 321 online if u can.
I loved her way of teaching and enthusiasm for the materials; however she and her TA's are not helpful at all and make going to office hours rather difficult and intimidating especially if you're a bit shy like me. Course load is HEAVY. there are 2-3 articles every week to read and do a quiz on and you also have to do read 2-3 chapters for class.
Great Prof. I personally did not use the textbook and still finished with an A-. Pay attention during the lectures, she will hint as to what is on the exam.
Very clear about what she expects and prepares you well for her finals. Cares about her students and gives great lectures.
i liked fabian for 131 so i thought this class would be the same. she was helpful in 131 but expects too much and is inaccessible now. seems too busy for students and has rude tas. talks like she knows about methods but isnt too clear in teaching them. avoid this class. take fabian for 131 but not higher level classes.
Sheri is my favorite prof! She is very clear in lectures about what will be on the tests, so if you listen to that and use those to study you will do very well in the course. She is also very willing to help students and answers emails very quickly. I would love to take another class with Sheri! She made lectures so fun and interesting.
Worst prof at SFU
Bring a pillow to her class so when you lose consciousness your head wont slam on your desk. And bring a pillow for your pillow because your pillow will fall asleep too.
This class is boring. Im sure it would be better if there were another prof teaching it.
worst prof
Most people didn't like her but I thought she was alright. In the first semester, she was great, readings were only 10ish pages midterm was fair and she was very reasonable when I got confused with an assignment. Second term: readings were 25 pages and the final was quite hard ( especially since I hadn't done the readings for the 2nd term.
Had Sheri for 131 and was the worst mistake. I heard she was a pretty decent prof so I rolled the dice on her. Turns out I got snake eyes. She unfortunately made moderate material dry and boring. She was inaccessible and Kurt to students with fair questions in lecture. All around a dry prof! Take 131 with Sharmaine Perkins instead if you can.
Maybe it was because the topics covered in the class were dry, or maybe it was because of the prof, but I would not recommend this class. If you have to take it, take it with another lecturer.
Really passionate teacher, who is very knowledgeable about the course subject. Lectures could be very dry and outdated for online students. Lots of reading - and its super repatative (but hey, at least it prepares you for exams).
Take it with anyone else than Fabian.
Extremely picky about minor details. She should be an English prof if she wants to critique every little thing. Speaks down to students sometimes. Makes the content more confusing. Expected way too much for the research project (30% of grade) and set unrealistic expectations.
My TA was Jennifer. Make to sure to pay attention to the modules and the textbook since there are no lecture notes provided. Youll have to make your own notes. Her exams were kinda confusing, but definitely doable. There was also a presentation, essay, and weekly online quizzes which were pretty easy and marked reasonably.
I took her course online and there were a lot of videos and readings to do each week (which is natural for an online course). The exams appear difficult due to the wording of the questions, but they are graded fairly (you'll probably do better on them than you think). She is really caring and kind. If you put in the effort you can do well!
I would just run. I do not recommend her at all. She is super anal about anything and everything. She's very passive-aggressive when replying to students as well.
A W F U L Terrible class. It was boring, dry and the material was out of date. Sherri is also very rude and condescending in her responses to students.
Avoid her. I do not normally make reviews on professors, but I just needed to ensure the safety of future students.
just don't do it. She was extremely petty and passive towards students, she says she wants students to asks questions but when they do, she seems to get mad at them for them genuinely being confused. Course material was easy but she made it more difficult than it had to be.
She's a good person. She handled everything well during the TA strike and she was very considerate to everyone's situation. She cares about your learning and were open to students coming to talk to her during office hours. Very accessible and responsive through emails. Lectures consisted of group discussions to help you learn.
AVOID. her instructions for the paper are all over the place it's so hard to find the modules with it since they are all over canvas. Nor are they properly explained. I am willing to bet just her class alone in a sem is enough to drive you nuts and be very heavy. The TA Shana nor her herself are of any help, they just direct you towards modules.
